The game keeps glitching out after starting it up everytime. Developers need to fix that bug quick.

Slap City is easily the best platform fighter I've played to date, I'm pretty late to the party on this one but damn do I feel like a fool for passing it up for so long.
It just FEELS good to play, every character also brings a different archetype and mechanics to the table that manage to make each of them feel very standout. There's also so many stages and so much technical depth that it really does feel like a game for everyone, which many smash-like games seem to usually lack.

Slap City is a very well polished platform fighter. The characters are all very interesting, the systems have great complexity and depth, and the gamefeel is immaculate. It is a highly rewarding to get invested in and an absolute blast to play.
However, I think ultimately it falls short when played more seriously. Aerials often have incredibly short total durations, allowing them to be pressed without much concern. This in combination with other systems such as clutch reversing momentum make calling out people and punishing mistakes a bit of a chore, which can often devolve into being frustrating.
Overall it is a very fun game and I do recommend it, though I think its not one worth investing into at a higher level.

I can't recommend this game. The single player isn't what I was hoping it was going to be. I remember it not having so many annoying platforming sections, but that is most of what it is. The final "boss" isn't even a smash bros style fight. It's just a completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ platforming section where you try to hit a random item on the screen, while an insane amount of various enemies, hazards, and platforms come up out of nowhere. None of this was fun. There are some collectables to find, and SOME of them will show up as a shadow before picking a level. As far as I can tell, there is no way in game to know what hidden collectables you're missing, or in which level you're supposed to be looking for them in.
There is a cool tetherball kinds game mode that is as far as I can tell only in this game, but it doesn't make up for the incredibly lackluster single player mode. The local battles are alright, but have been done better in other smash clones.
This is a bummer for me, as I recall this game being pretty fun earlier on.

I don't know how to go about this but, no I don't recommend this. You can just buy Rivals of Aether 1 which has a massive library of workshop characters, a great cast of base characters, and a Discord server that is at least somewhat active, though I don't know how active SlapCity's Discord is. The story mode is "neat" but even though the story has slight changes per character the main gameplay and levels are all the same. That's not to say there's nothing good about this game, as this game is kinda weird and crazy in a good way, but that just doesn't stand up to what Rivals of Aether is. There's fun to be had here and if you know a local smashy bros guy this could be a fun one time thing for a day. Get it on sale if you purchase,

What stands out the most is its gameplay, it is very adaptable for both casual and competitive people, each character has unique abilities and gameplay, they really feel unique even with very, very unique mechanics
The game modes are quite a few, it's hard not to find something to do in this game, from the online waiting minigames to the single player modes, the replay value is quite high here!!
Everything has so much personality, a lot of creativity behind it and above all, great originality, both in the characters (and also the originality of their games) and in their ways of playing, and more!!
I fell in love with the game, it's so unique that it shouldn't just stay in the "smash-like" box, there's really a lot behind that, and this game invites you to watch it playing or listen to its OST. <3

An INCREDIBLY funny platform fighter. I haven't played any of the studios other games (this is a crossover of all their work from my understanding) but honestly, you don't really need to to enjoy this. It's just genuinely fun and chaotic with lots of cool characters and stages. But best of all, this is one of the only platform fighters I've played with a full Subspace Emissary inspired mode. Full stories written for each character with their own challenges and what have you. It's seriously impressive and I don't think the game gets enough credit for that.
The Goddess of Explosions is my main and... with a name like that, do I really have to explain it? I've always wanted a character like this in a platform fighter, just chaotic and making everything explode around them. Explosions make for fun attacks!! And this game NAILS it!

Got a lot of Smash 64 and Melee vibes from this game and that's a good thing since I think this is one of the best platform fighters to come out in recent times I wish the devs gave us one more update and that player base was still active. Even with no updates this game still manages to bring me back Every time, the movement is butter and the characters are so much fun to use it doesn't need a big roster when they all feel unique. Overall SlapCity is worth it if you love Smash you'll love this it doesn't break the mold or anything but it doesn't need to it did what Smash does but I honestly think they perfected it highly recommended.

Also just a really well put-together platform fighter. I think the game overall looks a lot better than either of the Nick Brawl games, it's clear that the team had a lot more time to work on this one, even if they had a slightly smaller budget. Single player story is very good, going from tutorial to testing the limits of each character's movement. The only problem is that not every character has a story mode.

The story mode is a hoot and its a shame how this game died so utterly, its been long dead, if you want to play it you have to hunt down the few active players, most of which are way too good at it anyhow.

For me this game is a perfect happy medium between a satisfying, technical platform fighter with tight controls while also being incredibly silly. I'm not sure if it's a balanced game, but I don't think it's supposed to be. it's just fun. idk.
Really fun game, only issue is that the online play can be pretty laggy for everyone if even just one person has bad ping, or at least that's how it seems from what I've played. Almost perfect otherwise, really fun game to play with friends, good art, and great OST, it's a shame that there aren't too many people playing this.
Not a lot of people playing Slap City nowadays, but it's a pretty fun and unique platform fighter. Slap City is what the cool kids call a platform fighter. I call them "Smash Bros clones" myself, but that's just me. This is the second platform fighter I've ever played in my life.
The first was the first Smash Bros on the N64. It's hard to believe now, but I used to be a diehard Nintendo fan. I used to eat up EVERYTHING The Big N put out as a kid. And I got to rent the original Super Smash Bros on the N64 when it was new. Short review of that: I liked it. I didn't love it, but I liked it. My main was Yoshi. Bit off-topic, but once the PS2 came out, and since it had WAAAAAAAAAAY more games than the GameCube, and since I wasn't really interested in the DS's library, I effectively gave up on Nintendo once the N64 and GBA were discontinued, but that's a story for another day.
I mention this because Smash Bros has only gotten even more popular since then. I actually remember a number of people back in the day buying or borrowing a Nintendo Wii JUST to play Smash Brawl. It was so popular, I jokingly referred to Smash as, "The only Nintendo series anyone gives a S*&^ about anymore," because it was the late 2000s, and Real Gamers(tm) were generally avoiding family friendly games like the plague, yet they made an exception for these quirky platform fighters. The original on the N64 is supposedly the worst due to lack of polish and being a new thing for the time with nothing to build off of. If that's true, well, I still like it.
So now we fast forward many years later. An indie game studio from Sweden puts out a free game called Princess Remedy In A World of Hurt. I saw it recommended on an article about free PC games. I played it. I liked it. It was cute. Because I played Princess Remedy, I eventually got an update from Steam that the company that made Princess Remedy put out an early access title called Slap City. I'm not against early access, and this company, Ludosity, had earned some respect from their free game. Slap City was advertised as a platform fighters. Having been many years since I played that old N64 classic, I dug in.
I've seen the game evolve to its current final build. My review? I love it. Yes, it's better than Smash 1. Is it better than Smash U on the Switch? I dunno. Slap City doesn't have tons of characters, lots of famous game music, etc. And while I like the Slap City cast, I can't say they're as iconic as the likes of Mario, Link, Pikachu, etc. But does that really matter, when SC is as polished as it is? In my hours playing the game, I couldn't find any bugs, weirdness, bad gameplay balance and what have you. In my inexperienced hands, it basically plays like an improved version of the original Smash Bros.
SC, like its inspiration, is also a crossover of various characters, albeit from the games made by Ludosity. Besides Princess Remedy, you'll also see the likes of Ittle Dew (AKA Not Link), a musclebound fishman named Ultra Fishbunjin 3000, my main Business Casual Man, a girl who uses watermelons for boxing gloves, among others. The game is very weird, and very quirky, but it's a good quirky, i.e. not forced. The game is delightfully cartoony, not at all realistic or dark, which is especially evident in its story mode. Yes, this game has a campaign, sort of like Subspace Emissary (disclaimer: I know nothing about Subspace Emissary. The one time I borrowed a Wii, I played Super Paper Mario. Sorry, but Mario RPGs take priority in my household.) It's a good way to learn the controls and figure out how the characters move, attack, how they play off each other, and so on.
Up to 4 players can fight at once. Any number of them can be actual fighters or CPU opponents, depending on what mode you're playing. There's also training for those who wanna get really good. SC also features unlockables and funny lore for the combatants.
I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan of tournament fighters in the world. I've played several, but the only 2 I highly recommend are Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Garou: Mark of the Wolves. I'd still take those over SC. As far as platform fighters go? SC takes the cake. The only other platform fighter I've played is the original Rivals of Aether. I do like ROA, but I prefer the way SC controls. It really puts the platforming in platform fighter, giving the characters floaty jumps and long air time.
Don't be fooled by SC's retro graphics; this is a polished gem, one with catchy music and gameplay that's easy to learn, but difficult to master. This is definitely something you should get friends to play with. And even if it might not be as good as Smash U, I can say one thing with certainty; I've never experienced Joy Con Drift playing this. (Also, yeah, the graphics might look like an upscaled PS2 game, but it also gives SC lower system requirements than your typical Triple A game.)

Speaking as someone who has thousands upon thousands of hours in this genre, let me just say the both the gameplay, style, and tiny details of this game make it a wonder to play. It holds up casually, competitively, and even has a really good singleplayer campaign(best one among platform fighters). Humor is great, customization is great, soundtrack is a bop, all characters feel distinct and original. It's all just an all-around fun game that I wish had a bigger audience.
The Clutch button is among the greatest inventions this genre has had.

It's a really fun platform fighter for local multiplayer and single player, especially with the story mode! More platform fighters should have a story mode. I [b] really [/b] wish they'd add a campaign for the newer characters, though.
Also, don't expect an active online. Buy it only if you intend to play online with friends or play locally.
Slap City is a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. This Nintendo Switch game is a ripoff of Super Smash Bros, only worse in every respect. It's based on characters from the "Ludosity Universe", which raises an incredible philosophical question. Do universes exist if nobody ever heard of them? I'm not sure that they do, but here we have Super Smash Bros from Temu, with characters nobodies ever heard of or care about.
On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers.
The game features low-polygon "retro" assets with cartoony, mobile app style shader effects, making this look like a barely functional mobile app from 15 years ago. This visual style is a method that lazy devs often use when they have a lack of interest/capability to create highly detailed, high poly models and instead use shader effects to disguise that shortcoming under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It's far below the state of the art visuals gamers expect as a result of their decisions.
PC gamers will be insulted by the presence of console peasant children's toy controller prompts, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for.
Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Slap City has the almost delusional of $20 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
For comparison, the $20 asking price for this game could get you games like "Age of Empires IV", "Red Dead Redemption 2" or "Detroit: Become Human". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

Incredibly high-energy platform fighter. The game's character design and overall balancing are more out there than Smash Bros., but it still captures the same fun, responsive game feel you're looking for. I love that the title leans into a goofy party game angle rather than presenting itself as a serious fighting game; it sets it apart from similar titles like Rivals of Aether. Slap City ends up being a super fun popcorn-munching game to pull out with some casual friends.
I commend the developer's effort for trying, and the graphics are nice, but it's just not like the competition.

Okay, before I start this review, I have to be honest. I was having too much fun playing Slap City and that’s why I have been late making this review. So, if this review comes across as me gushing I apologize in advance. Anyway, let’s get started.
Presentation
Visually speaking, I absolutely love the art style of the game, especially the cel-shading of the characters like Ittle Dew, Jenny Fox, Princess Remedy, etc. The background stages to me also look awesome to play in, especially the Story Mode levels. We will talk about the story mode later, but I also want to give props to the character portraits for the character select and text box conversations. By the way, the costumes’ alt colors will also be unlocked if you collected the paint cans that in each level of each character’s campaign. As for the audio and music, I dig it! Sure the theme song can get a bit repetitive, but I really don’t mind at all. The sound effects are also pretty good as you really feel like you are hitting your opponents and laying the smackdown. Before I forget, I also love you bouncy and lively the characters’ animations are. Overall, the presentation has to be one of the best I have seen in any video game, and Ludosity’s artists, musicians, and audio effects artists really knocked out of the park here.

Gameplay
So, much like the Super Smash Bros. series, Slap City plays like a 2D Platform Fighter. Instead of having health bars, you instead have to deal enough damage to your opponent in order to knock them off the stage easily. To be honest, the game is much more fun if you are playing with four players at once. However, one aspect that I found interesting is that you play with only two players, the characters will have unique victory quotes for the opponent they fought. Not only will you be fighting solo or in teams, but you also have the option of breaking the targets, playing arcade mode, and playing story mode. I highly recommend playing story mode as that is a way for you get unlockables for each character in your roster. So, this is a minor nitpick, but I wish the game could have benefited with a random character select slot in the character select screen. For the majority of the time I played this game, I mostly used Ittle Dew and Orka as my go to fighters. Although, in my opinion, Ittle Dew is probably one of the best and most balanced characters in the Slap City roster. Now the characters are not bad, and they have their own quirks. I mean, I actually enjoyed playing as Princess Remedy and Frallan; I just got more out of Ittle Dew.
The stages are also fun to fight in but if I have a gripe with the stage select, it’s probably Ascend Zone and Bumper Zone. If I’m going to be honest here, I am not a big fan of casino-themed levels, and the bumpers can really trip you up at times. Speaking of which, if you get all the collectables in the game, you will also get the chance to see how character fights in the “How to Play” menu. Personally, I really love this mechanic as it encourages you to get creative with the characters’ move sets and find the hidden items. However, I won’t lie in saying that I had to look up some walkthroughs in order to find the multi-colored coins. For example, when Ittle Dew gets knocked down and you lay there for a few seconds, Z’s will start to fly from her, indicating that she is sleeping. Also, if Frallan does a taunt while grabbing Remedy, she will kiss and heal her. Remedy can also do the same thing to Frallan as well. Also, if Remedy and Frallan are on the same team, Remedy will hold Frallan in her arms and have another unique quote. It is small details like that which gives the game more personality than necessary, and I absolutely love it. That being said, the gameplay is not perfect, but I had a fun time with it. If you want to change the gamepad layout to your liking, be sure to go to the “Options” menu.

Performance
The performance in this game was awesome and consistent; I did not experience any frame rate drops on my Steam Deck. Even though the game says it is not Steam Deck verified, that can’t always be trusted. Just to let you know, when I used one of Cruiser Tetron’s strong attacks, the game for me did not freeze, that was just the hit stop playing before you launch your opponent into the stratosphere. Now as much as I love 60 FPS, I really don’t mind having 30 FPS every once in a while. As long as the game does not freeze or stutter all over the place I’m okay with it.

Stories
That’s right, the title in this sections says “Stories.” Unlike the Subspace Emissary in Smash Bros. Brawl, the story is told through each character’s perspective with each having their own different endings. Basically, the premise is that you wind up Slap City, fight your way through some enemies and rivals, enter the Slap Arena only to find out that you have been had by the mayor and you must defeat him before he activates his doomsday machine. The story actually made me smile and kept my attention all the way through. It’s not perfect, but I’d take something light-hearted over something overly dark and serious any day. Also, isn’t it funny how Ultra Fishbunjin 3000 just transforms into a Super Saiyan at the end of his campaign?

Final Verdict
Overall, Slap City to me has to be one of my favorite games I have ever gotten the chance to play on Steam. Is it perfect? No, but I’d still say you will not be disappointed if you’re a fan of Super Smash Bros. or Platform Fighters like me. Now I don’t usually like to talk about the price in reviews like this but if you really want to try Slap City for yourself, I’d suggest waiting on a sale. one of the best platform fighters out there. the character designs are unique and fun, the movement is great, and the clutch button is sick. there's a decent amount of casual content, with a lot of fun wacky stages and a short but fun story mode. i only wish it had rollback netcode.
