after a few runs i came straight to the comments .... ive played a ton of SSX tricky on the ps2 years ago and recently was playing with my nephew and picked it right back up .... i was hoping there was something on steam so i picked this one up .... I am shocked at the good reviews ... i cant control this character to save my life the redo or get back up will put you back in a terrible spot ... ive gotten stuck over and over with no momentum to get over a hill ... this game reminds me of 1080 on the N64 .... down right horrible, i dont know what to say, other bad comments also say the controls are wack super disappointed right off the bat

The game world feels big. There are multiple levels each with various setups to compliment tricks - jumps, rails, “Street”, and vert halfpipes with massive jumps. I found the levels good, but there is no exploration or (at least that I found) cool hidden areas.

There isn’t so much a big narrative here, but there are missions that have a small cutscene before and after that adds some flair to the game. There is no plot other than shredding.
That being said, what little simple plot available is not good. It’s very cringy and full of snowboard-isms that will make you roll your eyes. These missions serve as a type of objective/tutorial, but otherwise, do not play this for the story.
Honestly, I’d rather they skipped the whole story and focused on a better tutorial.

[h1][b] Gameplay (Mechanics/Difficulty) – [2/10] [/b] [/h1]
The gimmick here is around the free-form controls and how it’s supposed to emulate a natural feel, similar to the free controls of EA’s Skate (which I have not played). Other than the unique controls, it brorrows from other extreme sports games with multiple different moves, often with the same look and names of skateboarding, points, and even Tony Hawk’s S-H-R-E-D collectable letters.
I think it has a great foundation of snowboarding mechanics, but what kills it for me are the controls. I found them insanely inconsistent and often just plain terrible. The handy Re-Shred button, which allows you to instantly redo a failed jump, was essential in nearly spamming it trying to perfect even the simplest things. I would often mess up a jump in multiple ways by holding the controls the same way each time. Don’t ask me how that works. After 3 hours, I still haven’t figured out how to turn while holding a up or down trick.

This game feels very difficult to learn the controls, but once you overcome that, it seems fine.

[h1] [b] Graphics (Quality/Technical) – [6/10] [/b] [/h1]
Graphics seem good. When you get enough speed, the look and feel of the game reflects that. The snow trails are present and detailed. Animations can be a bit stiff though when wiping out.

On the technical side, the game can experience stutters, especially when loading into a level. I didn’t like how on startup the game forces you into a loading screen and then a run automatically without you being able to choose.
I did notice a few bugs - wiping out caused my player model to blast off into the atmosphere.

Music is eh, okay. It sounds like more of a relaxing synth vibe. Problem is the variety, there’s only something like 10 songs, so it repeats very frequently.

There is voice acting and hooo boy is it terrible. You can tell who the professional snowboarders are, because all their voice acting is terrible. It really doesn’t help that the writing is so cringe.

I think there’s some good replay value here, as after the missions are over, the ability to board down hills and perfect points is always a thing. Other than that and achievements, I couldn’t say specifically as I didn’t get far into the game.

Shredders attempts a realistic spin on the arcadeyness of extreme sports games, and while it succeeds some of the time, it absolutely fails in other areas that I consider too important to overlook.

By far my biggest complaint is the controls. Every single mission felt like such a struggle to do even the simplest things. Often I would redo the jump multiple times only to mess up in new and exciting ways while attempting to do the same thing over and over.
The game does a terrible job at helping the player learn its unique control scheme. Often you’ll get a text box before a mission that simply says shows the R-stick up and RB for a tailgrab or something, but it doesn’t explain how spinning works, or what the left and right stick is supposed to do. I decided I had enough when I couldn’t even figure out how to break or slow down, cause pressing left stick, right stick, and D-pad all down apparently had no effect.

Aside from the controls, I found the story’s narrative to be utterly cringe. The writing is terrible and the voice acting, obviously from non-voice actors/professional snowboarders (which is cool) sounds like it was recorded over the phone and underwater at the same time.

If you can overlook those glaring points, you’d be left with a game that does allow some great freedom and feeling of speed of snowboarding. The levels felt huge and varied enough that ranges from an Olympic-style ramp setup to a snowy street area full of ramp grinds and stairs.

Overall, I cannot recommend Shredders. I found the controls to be too frustrating. If I cannot get even the simplest of commands down after hours of playing the game, then the game needs to do better at either making the controls better or teaching them better to players. The cringe story was icing on the cake of not wanting to make me continue.

Like other reviewers have said, the challenges are tough, but they are in fact ... challenges, at the end of the day.
It's a physics based game and having some basic knowledge of snowboarding really helps.
But, after all that, it is the quintessential snowboarding game. Nothing else feels like it.

Alongside SSX 3 and Steep, I think Shredders might be the greatest snowboarding game of all time. Theres a ton of bugs within the menus and missions that seriously degrade the experience at times, and the controls can feel somewhat inconsistent, especially when compared to something similar like the Skate series, but theres so much to love that I ultimately find myself ignoring the problems. Its very satisfying to rip down a line with high flow and score. I would easily argue that this has the most fun snowboarding mechanics available right now. Just wish the devs would come back and iron out all the bugs, they are a serious pain.

Ive played steep, a couple other snowboarding games and i have to say that shredders is my favorite for sure. In my opinion its more realistic than steep and the mechanics feel better. I hope they'll make another country for more content eventually.

idk if its because i have played other games in the past that i could calibrate my own controls on. But this game utilizing the right trigger.....rather than preloading with the right thumbstick makes no sense. the trick list never works the way you actually hit it on your controller.

I can go from trying to do a indy grab and all of a sudden, im rotating in the air doing a Rodeo. (its not the controller, ive checked countless times. no drift)

love the concept of the game. love the gameplay. but i wouldnt recommend it. you cannot adjust your controls for whatever reason. i mean damn, we grew up playing THPS and splash down racing jetskis. The controls need to be adjustable. the way the layout is, its completely ass backwards.

As it stands, i would not recommend this game to any of my snowboarding buddies. the realism of the maps and the movements are great. Your controls to control the rider, not so much.

I started snowboarding in 1985 at the age of 9... (I competed in several regional halfpipe cups in Sölden, Arlberg, and Tannheimer Tal). Today I'm 50, and unfortunately, my bones aren't what they used to be, BUT Shredder gives me goosebumps so much I almost had a tear in my eye...

An excellent snowboarding platform with satisfyingly challenging controls. The store trailer cites this being called "The Skate Of Snowboarding" and I'd say that's accurate, with a large focus on using the gamepad thumbsticks to trick and set up weight transfers for big spins and flips. It's reasonably easy to learn a basic set of tricks but a fair challenge if you want to pull off something specific.

It took me 3 hours to get through the main 'story' of the game which introduces you to the bulk of characters and basegame slopes - a nice progression to unlock some cosmetics for your rider and learn the games systems. There's room to easily double that playtime if you want to three-star every mission objective though, and there's still plenty more missions I have yet to experience outside that core story. And of course, there's plenty of time to be spent just carving down the many slopes at my own pace and enjoying the atmosphere.

Safe to say this is meeting my expectations for a snowboarding game and will present a relaxing yet engaging extreme sports outing.

Gay flags everywhere, gay gear, gay gloves, gay cloths, lots of gay stuff, and there is a steep learning curb, its not a flashy quick snowboarding game, its just very very relaxing and chill, Its a good game but it took me a sec to notice, I think there's a story but nothing really worthy of paying attention to. If you like zoning out to a chill game this might be for you, The sound track is like some kind of trance tecno-music it suffers from only having 1 or 2 tracks but it does not get annoying. I think the game could run a little smoother, I had to disable shadows to make it run well. Its does have session markers like skate which is great with these types of games but it can get old because the characters and the voice acting is so bad. The control system feels like something new and thats the real star here just wait for it to be on sale.
