It's ok. It's one of those, "buy it only if it's under $10" games.
Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's just not thrilling. It has decent combat, graphics, and skill sets; there's just no "going the extra mile" here. For example, there's zero character customization; you're playing default characters only. Enemies are kind of meh and everything seems kind of "same old, same old". Environments are kind of repetitive, too. Still, if you have a few extra bucks, I say go for it.

A very good time! But with a few rough spots.

I had a lot of fun playing through the different levels in the tactical combat sections. There are however some really frustrating and unfun to complete puzzles which felt like a slog to get through. I started to really dread those sections in the mid and later portion of the game. I found myself wishing the developers would allow me to skip the puzzle sections or reduce the overall number.

Meeting all of the different characters and learning the different combinations of abilities was really where this game shined in my experience. There are fair number of different enemies and learning new combos to defeat them, trick them, or turn their robots into temporary allies was very enjoyable.

There was a time or two where characters would t-pose menacingly during combat (lol) or the camera would fall through the floor when too many ambushes were set off simultaneously. Saving and reloading fixed it each time or cycling through enemies/getting an animation to play would snap everything back in place eventually.

I would love to play a sequel of this game if they make one! Definitely recommend trying it out if you are on the fence.

实在是受不了了这游戏到底哪好了？
要养成技能就那几个要策略战斗地图屁大一点与其说是策略不如说是回合制一换一游戏因为对手的子弹会穿墙！在墙角的死角
能被对手穿墙打大半血那请问呢我要这掩体干啥？反正我能打到的他也能打到我呗
还有好多玩得难受的地方不一一举例说了难受不推荐

I genuinely love the idea of this game. The sad fact is that it's like any other tactical, turn-based shooter - the bad guys can shoot through walls and hit you from impossible angles and through doors (I was two blocks in from a doorway and was killed by someone 10+ blocks away on the opposite side of the door) - while you are hampered in the exact opposite manner - you can't get "line of sight" when it's obvious from the terrain you could easily shoot them; the enemy seemingly ALWAYS hits and does massive damage, while your characters always do just little enough to give the bad guy one more turn. I'm not asking for this game to be EASY, but it's insanely lopsided in favor of the NPCs as of now.

[i]Showgunners[/i] is a surprisingly good title that blends a good chunk of what makes the [i]XCOM[/i] series special, at least in terms of tactical turn-based combat, with an almost-believable murder-centric television "game show" and a worthwhile and sharply distinguished cast of "hero" characters. I felt like it got off to a slow start at the outset, particularly with said cast starting with few skills and fewer weapons, but it really does come into its own as you progress, level them up, and find/buy new gear.

The fame mechanic is interesting in that regard too insofar as mapping out your path through the options and figuring how to interact with fans to get the perks you want is a fun little progression system in itself. I rather carefully navigated my way and scored a terribly powerful implant and a devastating weapon for Scarlet with just a bit of care. Both of which were extremely helpful and amped up the power-fantasy vibe significantly once achieved.

[i]Showgunners[/i] substitutes "exploration" sections of the various levels to get through rather than doing base-building, managing research and production, or other such activities in between levels. I'd say these are a mixed bag: some of them are more engaging than others with a couple in particular having downright irritating levels of puzzles and/or fiddly sections to survive. Being a bit of a completionist, I certainly appreciated the fact that I got a warning at the final combat arena for each level if I hadn't yet found all the autographs, loot boxes, and optional arenas. That was great. It was irritating sometimes to have to search for what I'd missed, but it meant I went into the final levels [i]much[/i] better equipped than I otherwise would have been, which turned out to be almost critical.

You also have a bit of "down time" back at the contestant dormitory (or whatever they call it) which actually has some worthwhile audio logs and little tidbits to find. And you're doing yourself a favor if you submit to the after-action interviews to generate more of the type of fan perception points you want. Those helped me achieve several of my goals earlier than I otherwise could have, and that makes a difference.

All of that is great, and I'm a sucker for the whole vibe and mechanics right from the get go, though I think some better explanations might have been in order for some of the abilities. Speaking of negatives, there are really two things I found reliably frustrating with the game the first of which being its interface. It's [i]almost[/i] perfect, just close enough to be super annoying when things don't go as planned or it isn't giving you enough feedback to make a meaningful choice. When moving around, for example, it shows you sight lines to potential targets along with hit-chance calculations to make good decisions, but there's no way (that I found at least) to see other important bits like where I have to move to be able to toss a grenade precisely where I wish. Or whether I have line of sight to use a particular skill. It leaves just enough out of the picture to force you to guess at times and end up reloading your save if you can't live with having screwed yourself.

The second thing that I found irritating was how the game would deliberately mislead you at times or at least not do a great job of explaining the objectives. I rage quit at one point when it basically popped a new objective into the mix out of the blue and there was simply no way to achieve it given how the mission had gone up to that point. Only I learned later to my chagrin that [i]it was an optional objective and not essential to progress[/i]. I ended up replaying the mission from the beginning and achieving the objective I later learned was optional.

Another mission was deliberately misleading, essentially hitting you with an inescapable failure point only to rescind that through a "plot twist". I admire the developers' trolling the player like that in hindsight, but I almost rage quit again after working so hard to get so far. The only thing that prevented me was the memory of the aforementioned unclarity about an objective being optional. And then it turned out at the end that the objective I thought was optional in this one [i]was actually mandatory instead and almost lost me the game for not knowing that![/i] That was very annoying.

The final thing that bugged me, ironically, was the way the game [i]just wouldn't end[/i]. I don't want to get into spoiler territory, so I'll keep this as generic as possible. But just when I thought the game was going to end, I found there was a whole new set of missions to achieve the next goal. I thought again (stupidly in hindsight) that surely the game would end after that only to go through a whole new area with new challenges and new enemies. And then after that I thought for sure I'd be done only to learn there was what sounded like maybe a final fight coming [i]and that's when I got prompted to play the DLC levels first![/i]

I want to be clear: I think the developers have really given you some value for your money with this game. The final missions are actually some of the most fun too insofar as you "get to play with all the toys" so to speak. Again, I'm leaving that vague to avoid spoilers. But for somebody like me with a very limited amount of time to play these days, the false codas and false expectations of completion got pretty old after a while. Maybe that's just a psychological hang up of mine, to be clear.

In the final analysis, I think it's a fun turn-based tactical combat game that's well worth playing. It does an awful lot right and sands off some of the unforgiving edges from other similar games. It entertained me for a solid 20+ hours, and that's a lot of value for the price I paid. I don't think there's much replay value, but the first run through is more than good enough to make it worth your while.
