J'ai acheté le jeux car je fais toute la licence des Sherlock Holmes et j'ai était quand même bien surprise par la qualité de ces jeux sorties au début des années 2000 !
Pour être toute à fait honnête, je n'ai aucune nostalgie envers ces jeux étant née en 2007. Donc pour le coup mon sentiment n'ai pas biaisé par celle-ci.

On va pas se mentir le jeux à BEAUCOUP de défaut.
-Comment je ne peux pas parler de la maniabilité spectaculaire de ce jeux ! point and click avec caméra fixe... c'est littéralement des fois impraticable ! Il n'écoute pas ce que tu lui dit de faire..
et puis.. c'est sans compté les épreuves de vitesse dans un labyrinthe avec cette maniabilité pourris !!! Les dev ils avaient quoi en tête ? x) Je ne rage pas à la base, mais LA. J'ai jamais autant rager de ma vie :,) je fesais qu'insulter son gros cul vraisemblable à une beine a ordure. Et quand j'ai enfin réussis je peux vous dire que j'ai jamais était aussi soulagé x) puis après réflexion c'était rigolo donc je me suis bien amusé ! et puis la maniabilité pourris fait partis du charmeee de ce vieux jeux au fond.

-Tu tournes en rond pour trouver des objets quasiment invisible en boucle... vraiment il faut jouer au jeux avec une soluce à coté. Car en plus la quasi totalité des objets a ramasser ce n'est pas que je ne les ai jamais trouvé. J'avais ESSAYE de clicker dessus et ça n'avait strictement rien fait :)
donc faut faire attention.

-ce point est vraiment spécifique car c'est à la toute toute fin du jeux. Tout le long du jeux il y a ce système : tu trouves des objets et parle aux gens. Puis tu les enregistre et cela t'aide à résoudre des questionnaires qui t'aide à l'enquête a la fin de chaque chapitre. C'est une superbe mécanique qui est absente dans l'opus suivant awakened. Cependant à la fin pour répondre aux questionnaires le plus grossss. Tu n'as plus accès à tes indices. Et c'est super dommage, surtout que à cette époque (comparé au plus récent jeux Sher) tu ne résous Q'UNE SEUL enquête. Ce que je trouve vraiment compliqué à suivre !

Un des meilleurs points du jeux c'est les voix quand même, je les adores !!!

"Secret of the Silver Earring" is the second game in the Frogwares Sherlock Holmes franchise. Consider this the real start of the series though, because it introduces the Sherlock Holmes character model and voice actor that will be used through the next three titles: "Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened," "Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis," and "Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper." It is also the first game to include Dr. John Watson, and the first to show Holmes and Watson's apartment at 221 Baker Street. Although "Silver Earring" is the debut for a quadrilogy of Sherlock Holmes adventures, it is stylistically unique within the franchise.

"Silver Earring's" predecessor, "Mystery of the Mummy," was a first-person, point-and-click escape room game that uses anchor points to navigate around each room. The two games have very little in common beyond Holmes' items satchel and a phalanx of logic puzzles to solve.

"Silver Earring" is a third-person detective game. Holmes moves to the waypoints the player directs him to, which takes some getting used to but is quickly mastered. Much of the game requires interviewing an expanding list of witnesses; finding relevant documents; processing evidence; and deducing facts from all of the available clues. There is little action, although Holmes will sometimes have to sprint to complete challenges.

There are minor visual glitches that sometimes cause characters to not match the perspective of the scene. These don't affect gameplay, and while the graphical anomalies are sometimes jarring if not amusing when encountered, they don't affect gameplay.

The pacing is meticulous and formal, like a Victorian-era period piece on PBS Masterpiece Theater. The sleuthing requires digesting numerous testimonies and reading stacks of letters, journal entries and newspaper clippings. The mystery becomes convoluted with suspects and possible motives, and it takes an almost superhuman memory to keep track of it all. And in the end, deducing the right conclusion is a feat only Sherlock Holmes can accomplish.

After trying out previous game(s) in series and being rather disappointed to put it mildly, this was the next entry to try. A slightly better experience, which doesn't say much since the bar was laying on the floor... well, floor itself was the "bar" really. Odd controls, weird camera angles, rigid progression and tons of backtracking in hopes of finding one item Sherlock haven't found yet (Conan Doyle's Sherlock had no ability to magically know if he's seen literally everything, sometimes working with barely any clues at all).

Can't recommend due to two things mainly: intermittent bugs and sheer boredom discovered from going through same actions for n-th time in hopes that some new item uncovers extra clues (should be no need for guides in these games IMO). On the upside: you won't have excessive monetization or always-online DRM here, so that's good already.

While it is a notable step-up from [i]Mystery of the Mummy[/i], I found this entry to still be a mostly unenjoyable gaming experience. A lot of the puzzles/progressions are just way too difficult to figure out without a walkthrough, and the "action" segments are also terrible due to clunky controls. That said, there is decent story and mystery to be had (even if convoluted by the end) and I also liked the wide array of characters you meet (Sherlock's performance in particular was a real hoot). And a wonderfully cheesy soundtrack too! (Like with [i]Mystery of the Mummy[/i], if you're interested in this title, you'll have a better time watching a youtube playthrough instead of playing it).

This is basically unplayable. We had to restart the game multiple times for text to display correctly. Notes were unreadable. The first quiz does not work, and never allows you to validate it. Clues you need to progress are *imperceptible*, and unlike other games in the series there is no button to press to highlight interactables.

I can't recommend this game.
The movement is bad, the controls are bad, there is no auto save and you can't actually lose if you are caught by the dogs and have to restart EVERYTHING if you didn't save before. They added 3D models characters but the old purely point & click was much better and faster. There are no in game hints or a tracking how many clues are left and you are stuck if you don't find them without knowing where to look for.

La historia es muy buena. Me ha tenido enganchado hasta el final. Deja todo bien cerrado, a diferencia de algún otro que he jugado de la saga.

El problema es todo el resto. La jugabilidad, los escenarios, el movimiento del personaje... Todo es muy tosco/lento. A veces hay mucho texto y muuuy lento.

Dejé de jugarlo cuando quedaba 1 hora de juego aproximadamente y me vi todo el final en Youtube.

Es una historia que vale la pena seguir, pero la he disfrutado más viéndola que jugándola, cosa que nunca me había pasado ya que no soy de ver gameplays de ningún tipo, por eso no recomiendo el juego. Pero bueno, es un juego del 2004 y el primero de la saga, ya esperaba que no me acabara de agradar.

He visto que de este juego se reciclaron varios escenarios para Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of The Persian Carpet.

It's an old game so don't expect too much from it. It's still descent. You get to play as both Sherlock and Watson. It's a point and click game so you don't need anything other than a mouse. Some clues are well hidden and, in some cases, if you don't collect them all it can lock you out of proceeding with the game. This is something the game doesn't do well imo, as you can only find out that you're missing an item some 2-3 acts later when you need it.

There are also some really janky stealth sections where you have to move around the screen to a specific location so that you don't get spotted and sometimes Sherlock just doesn't want to do what you tell him to do. Also save often as the game can crash often.

The story was ok, and you have to read everything, sometimes two to three times until you get what's going on. I will say that while I appreciate that they kept the realism with articles and hand drawn letters, I couldn't read some. I can read cursive just fine, but there is no zoom or anything. And this game wasn't designed for modern screens. And lastly some puzzles are a real head scratcher. Like the Noah’s ark one or the card automaton.

I still liked it. It’s not a long game. Should take you somewhere from 5-7 hours. And I say this as someone who was stuck in some sections for a long time.

Red flags: Game did not work on native resolution, I had to go into the files to get it to work and even when it did, it barely functioned. Many glitches with character position. Voice acting was mediocre. Some things were impossible to click on. Honestly needs a rework or something.

Other than that, the game itself wasn't too bad. The story I did feel was needlessly complex--a good mystery can be short and concise, it doesn't need three killers and six murders of which only three were really relevant. Unfortunately a lot of the case seemed to be "explained away" by the appearance of Mycroft in the last third of the game, which felt like it was forced in because they couldn't work the evidence in naturally.

Watson felt flat and irrelevant to the story, sad but true. Holmes and Watson had their casual domestics which is very true to them, and I enjoyed Lestrade's presence. But I felt the villains in the story, only one was fully fleshed out--the second we did not once meet and were just to assume who he was, and the third felt like he could've gotten away with just being a hired actor. It's a shame, because it made the complete case feel almost pointless.

Exposition, infodumping, and slow. We were not lead to any natural conclusions, and then forced to make assumptions on who murdered who at the end of the game with no reference to any of the documents or dialogues we'd collected. And by the end of the game I'd forgotten who half the dead people were because there was easily over 30 characters.

in and it was oppressive. The music also got turned down to barely audible because the repetitive violin was assaulting my eardrums.

Some of the puzzles were really difficult too and involved patterns that weren't at all visible until you already knew the answer.

This game has aged better than some of Frogwares' other titles, mechanically speaking. It's pretty fun, if straightforward, although some of the details of the final deduction are frankly impossible for the player to figure out on their own, which is probably why this game lets you see the ending cutscene even if you get the last quiz wrong.

Unlike some of the later titles, this is just one big convoluted case, so I'd advise playing through this in as few sittings as possible so you don't lose the thread of the plot.

Some people really despise the quiz mechanic, and I can imagine it's painful if you haven't got a clue which answer you got wrong, but these questions are really not that hard to think through. Just look up a guide if you're stuck.

Oh, and save often. The game doesn't crash, but it has a few obnoxious sections that can lead to a game over.

Sherlocka Holmesa i Tajemnicę Mumii odpaliłem z ciekawości kilka lat temu. I choć gra się mocno zestarzała to całkiem miło spędziłem jedno popołudnie. Tajemnica Mumii była przygodówką w której obserwowaliśmy akcję z oczu postaci i poruszaliśmy się po węzłach. Tym razem mamy już do czynienia z klasycznym point&clickiem. I od początku widać, że rozgrywka będzie o wiele ciekawsza.

Sherlock Holmes i doktor Watson zostają zaproszeni przez niejakiego sir Melvyna Bromsby’ego na przyjęcie z okazji powrotu jego córki do Londynu. Bromsby chce by Sherlock miał oko na wszystko bowiem niepokoi się, iż coś złego może się stać. I miał chłop rację, bo sam padł ofiarą morderstwa w trakcie przemówienia. Słynny detektyw od razu bierze się do roboty przesłuchując świadków i badając otoczenie. Tym razem nasz detektyw niejednokrotnie ma okazję popisać się swoją dedukcją np. odgadując, że inspektor Lestrade był na obiedzie u matki. W grze jest całkiem sporo cut-scenek co pozytywnie wpływa na odbiór historii. Po ograniu ostatnimi laty całkiem sporej ilości przygodówek, które albo utrzymane są w baśniowych klimatach, albo polegają na odnalezieniu jakiegoś starożytnego skarbu przy okazji zwiedzając pół świata miło jest zagrać w przygodówkę w której prowadzimy śledztwo, a tereny po których się poruszamy to głównie Londyn i jego okolice.

Szkoda, że zabrakło jakiegoś samouczka, który zapoznałby nas z możliwościami detektywa. Nie są one może jakieś skomplikowane, ale sami musimy się domyślić, iż w pewnych momentach trzeba skorzystać z lupy, probówki czy taśmy mierniczej, którą Holmes ma w ekwipunku. Śledztwo trwa pięć dni, a każdy z nich jest dość podobny. Na początku przesłuchujemy wszystkich w danej lokacji, zbieramy dowody. Gra wypuści nas wtedy gdy zbadamy wszystko, nie ma więc obaw, że gdzieś utkniemy, bo coś pominęliśmy. Później Sherlock Holmes i doktor Watson wracają na Baker Street 221b, gdzie dokładniej badają zebrane dowody np. korzystając z książek czy przeprowadzając proste testy w laboratorium. Na koniec musimy rozwiązać quiz składający się z kilku pytań odpowiadając Tak lub Nie, dodatkowo każdą podpowiedź musimy poprzeć odpowiednim dowodem. Ułatwieniem jest tutaj kolor ramki w której umieszczamy dowód. Niebieski dla przesłuchania, zielony dla dokumentów, listów i innej papierologii jaką znaleźliśmy, czerwony dla notatek Sherlocka, gdzie zamieszcza swoje spostrzeżenia odnośnie wartych uwagi rzeczy np. śladów butów czy różnych przedmiotów znalezionych w danym miejscu. Po udanym dobraniu zebranych dowodów i prawidłowych odpowiedziach na każde z pytań dany dzień się kończy i zwykle oglądamy cut-scenkę.

Zagadki są w miarę ciekawe, choć do niektórych przydałoby się jakieś dodatkowe naprowadzenie. Mało jest tutaj łączenia ze sobą przedmiotów w ekwipunku, jedynie czasem trzeba np. przeciąć coś nożem. Regularnie natomiast używamy wspomnianej lupy, probówki czy taśmy mierniczej na różnych obiektach. Czasem naturalnie zdarza się utknąć jeśli nie dostrzeżemy jakiegoś małego przedmiotu czy nie zbadamy mokrych śladów butów, które jakoś nie wyróżniają się zanadto. Kilka razy zdarzyło się też, iż jakiś przedmiot można było użyć dopiero w określonym momencie, więc choć go wcześniej zauważyłem to później nie zwracałem na niego uwagi skoro okazał się nieaktywny. Twórcy mogli też sobie podarować etap w lesie w którym można się zgubić i na dodatek jest tam czasówka, gdzie trzeba w tym labiryncie dość szybko się przemieszczać. Im bliżej końca tym fabuła prowadzona jest coraz bardziej pospiesznie. Sam tytułowy srebrny kolczyk pojawia się dopiero pod koniec gry. Cały czas miałem wrażenie, że detektyw wie więcej niż ja, mimo, iż się w niego wcielałem. Na koniec poza zwyczajowym quizem możemy rozwiązać dodatkowy quiz odpowiadając na pytania kto stał za poszczególnymi morderstwami, gdyż sir Bromsby nie jest jedyną ofiarą. W każdym przypadku mamy do wyboru chyba wszystkie postaci jakie pojawiły się w grze. Tego quizu nie trzeba rozwiązywać. Tak czy siak i tak oglądamy niemal 25-minutowy film w którym Sherlock Holmes szczegółowo wyjaśnia całą intrygę. Od słuchania tego aż mnie rozbolała głowa. Myślę, że zagadka mogłaby być mniej skomplikowana tak by gracz też mógł poczuć satysfakcję z jej rozwiązania.

Jeśli chodzi o działanie na Win10 to nie odnotowałem większych problemów. Jedynie zdarzają się babole graficzne z wyświetlaniem niektórych postaci zwłaszcza z oddali. Mamy wrażenie, że lewitują albo chodzą po ścianach. Zapewne ma to związek z rozdzielczością i błędnym nakładaniem się dwuwymiarowych teł z trójwymiarowymi postaciami. Nie przeszkadza to jednak w rozgrywce, trzeba się do tego przyzwyczaić. W grze usłyszymy utwory m.in. Dvořáka, Czajkowskiego, Griega czy Schumanna. Muzyka mogłaby być nieco bardziej różnorodna, bo jak siedzimy za długo w danej lokacji to może znużyć.

Po tych wszystkich przygodówkach rozgrywających się w fantastycznych światach jak The Longest Journey, Dreamfall, The Whispered World czy zwłaszcza po słabym Silence miło było zagrać w coś bardziej przyziemnego. Jest to pierwsza gra z serii ukończona w tym roku, lecz na pewno nie ostatnia. Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring to jedna z bardziej satysfakcjonujących przygodówek w jakie ostatnio grałem. Ma dokładnie to czego oczekuję od point&clicka. Już ostrzę sobie zęby na kolejne części.

Looking at only its issues, this is a typical adventure game reminiscent of its time. Progression paths are often difficult to find. There is a crafting system used exactly ONCE. And the text is filled with typos and inconsistencies. I've even found one hardlock. No autosaves either, despite the presence of failure states.
If you are planning to play this, do consider a walkthrough.

But why then do I still recommend this game? It is because of the type of person who this kind of game appeals to in the first place. If you're even considering playing a 2004 adventure game, you already know to expect these things.
If we ignore these plagues of the time, what we are left with is the competent presentation of an excellent mystery. Though it's a tough one. Indeed, I could not fully figure it out myself, though the clues were all there. Had I sat with it longer, I most likely could have. But alas, I wanted to finish the game within a day. And the game does guide you well with the end-of-day quizzes, requiring a thorough understanding of the evidence before being allowed to progress. Though there were a couple times that the exact piece of evidence I was supposed to present was not so clear, despite me knowing the answer full well. Again, consider a walkthrough.

It's not bad, it's just mostly forgettable and weaker than its successors in every way.

La storia è ben scritta, con un intreccio particolare proprio tipico dei racconti di A. Conan Doyle, tutti i personaggi caratterizzati e il contesto storico molto realistico e particolareggiato. Il gioco in sé è più di una classica avventura punta e clicca perché è molto orientata alla ricerca della verità sugli omicidi, e si passa molto tempo a leggere documenti, articoli di giornali, lettere e quant'altro sia di aiuto per cercare di comprendere il ruolo dei vari personaggi coinvolti. C'è anche qualche classico enigma/puzzle da risolvere, non sempre facile, ma sono solo alcuni episodi che non snaturano il carattere investigativo del gioco. Tuttavia, pur nella sua complessità, lo svolgimento della trama e del gioco è lineare e scriptato, ovvero se non si fa tutto ciò che è previsto in un determinato luogo o momento, non si può procedere. Questo in realtà è anche un bene secondo me, così si evita di arrivare a punti morti e a dover ripartire.

After my painful experience with "Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy", the next game in the series was this one, "Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring". At first glance the game seemed like a massive improvement over its predecessor, and this motivated me to start it soon after finishing the traumatic experience of completing the first game without using a guide.

The whole game feels a lot more polished than the first game. It looks better, sounds better, and obviously had a lot more effort and money put into it. However, it was not long before the game revealed its true face...

First things first, the game again needs some tinkering until you get it working properly, but a lot less than the first game. After that, the game starts, and it can at first trick you into believing you are in for a nice and relaxing point & click experience. That is, until you get stuck at the first location because you need to find all the clues. This will take some time, because the game once again has moments where you are required to pixel hunt for stuff, and this first case of it is extremely evil, because the thing you are looking for is in a very tricky spot. You see, when you put your cursor over a door you can enter, it changes into a hand. Guess what it also turns into when you hover over an item you can interact with? Into a hand... That's as far as I'm going with this hint...

After I finally found all the clues, Holmes and Watson (who is present this time) returned to Baker Street, and I had to examine the clues. This was a bit cryptic, but you can figure it out pretty quickly with a bit of trial and error. However, what followed after was awful. The quiz...

You see, the quiz is essentially the way Frogwares wanted to simulate you leading an investigation. You get a set of questions, and you have to answer them and provide the right pieces of evidence to each question from the pool of all the evidence collected. It seemed like a nice idea until you realized that the game doesn't let you progress until you get all the questions right, and it doesn't tell you which one you answered right or wrong. The first quiz took 6 hours of my life. I asked for help from my friend, and he didn't prove so useful, so I asked him to look into the guide to check if the game broke, since there are literally discussion threads on Steam asking if the game is bugged during those quiz moments due to how cryptic and unintuitive to solve they are. After he confirmed everything was alright, I continued to torture myself for hours until I realized, quite admittedly, the stupid mistake I made... The second mistake I made was a lot more stupid, though, and not on my part.

Almost every quiz in the game has a question or two to which the answer is weird, or there are technically more answers to a single question. This feature of the game is so confusing that a lot of people in the reviews quite clearly admit to using a guide.

Moving on from the first level and first quiz, what followed was the second level, the most puzzle-dense level of the game. One I had to brute force, and then I got stuck on the following puzzle and asked for help from a second friend, which enlightened me, and I completed the puzzle that bothered me. For the second quiz, I luckily completed it pretty quickly, and then it was time for level three.

Here I got stuck on a puzzle for multiple hours. You need to open a safe by figuring out a combination with the help of some kind of a code. I again asked for help from the first friend, and this man, after finishing his 8-hour shift, sat down and wrote combinations on a paper until he finally found the answer, writing on the box of his pizza! This allowed me to continue the game. A stealth section followed soon after, and it was as awful as everybody else in the reviews says. It has less to do with hiding Holmes and more with hiding him from the invisible visibility cone of the guard and his dog, and I think that years of experience playing video games helped me to complete this part more than anything else. Quiz number 3, more pain, level 4.

Quite a quick and easy level, except for that timed maze part a lot of people are mentioning. Luckily, I managed to complete it pretty quickly. This part is very bad because it results in an instant game over without an option to retry, which means you can potentially softlock yourself if you save at a wrong time, which happened to one guy who made a thread about it on discussion boards. The fourth quiz again took multiple hours of my life.

Level 5 is short and easy, except for the part where you have to use an item on an item that doesn't show you can use an item on it, because, why not? The fifth quiz is the easiest of the bunch, and by this time you understand how they work. It also has the fewest questions.

Then the game allows you to answer optional questions to solve the crime, but I skipped those because I had no idea, and even after watching the final cutscene that plays right after that, I'm still not sure I completely understand everything.

To conclude, "Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring" is a clear example of that saying "two steps forwards, one step back". In a lot of ways, it is a better game than the first one, but the style, atmosphere, voice acting (which can also be quite questionable), and the story don't matter if the game is not fun, and I don't think it is... I wasted dozens of hours of my life on this and once again became obsessed with finishing the game, feeling like I can't play anything else until I beat the game. It was an awful experience, and I don't want to repeat it again. I don't recommend it, and I can see why when you search on the Sherlock Holmes subreddit, the first two games are barely mentioned, and even if they are, they are described as dated by everybody other than the most hardcore genre fans. Fascinating, since IGN reviewed this game also and quite positively at that, calling it easy. Either IGN was a lot better of a company before, or we are just stupid nowadays...

If you still want to play it, have a guide ready, and if you don't want to use it, like me. Well... be prepared for pain. But don't, if you can help yourself. Remember, games are supposed to be fun. This one is not...

I really, really liked this game, from the beginning to the end. The puzzles are not that difficult and with an exception of some (cracking the safe) I solved a majority of them without a walkthrough. I did consult a walkthrough, however, in the first part of the game (the Sherringford Hall), I kept missing some items that needed to be interacted with but all in all, the pixel hunting in this game isn't that extreme as in the first title - the Mystery of the mummy. I also needed to consult the walkthrough in some quiz questions.

In reviews two timed puzzles often get mentioned that most players abhore - the dog & guard puzzle and the maze puzzle. Maybe I got lucky with the dog & guard puzzle but I managed to complete it on the first try. And the same with the maze, I even got lost on a way but managed to make it through on the first try in final seconds.

The story is interesting and kept me captivated until the very end. No way I got all the solutions right but some things can be figured out through the course of the game. After not too good reviews I expected a much worse game and got very positively surprised.

I definitely recommend the game! Oh and on modern computers don't forget to run it through the DXWnd and use the 4GB patcher to make it run smoothly and resolve any possible mouse issues.

Душнувато. У грі немає жодних підказок, тож якщо ти десь пропустиш дрібну пляму чи якийсь маленький предмет, доведеться намотувати кола по всій локації, намагаючись зрозуміти, що ж ти не побачив. Із загадками ситуація така сама: тобі просто дають "шахову" дощечку з цифрами, і ти сам маєш здогадатися, що взагалі потрібно робити. Судячи з The Mystery of the Persian Carpet, у наступних іграх розробники все-таки додали текстові пояснення перед загадками - і це було правильне рішення.
Деякі рівні - як-от нічна стелс-місія на цементному заводі - це повний жах. Зробити стелс у point-and-click - треба бути альтернативним генієм. Або місія з пошуками руїн, де треба бігати по лабіринту, знайти відро, набрати воду й повернутися назад, щоб загасити пожежу. Це завдання ще й на час, а головний герой часто погано реагує на команди: то біжить, то раптово зупиняється й завмирає. Підсумовуючи: грати в це я не рекомендую. Бережіть свої нерви 2\10

探案过程我个人还蛮喜欢的，就是收集证据，每个节点会进行一些问答，中间还有剧情播片。全配音且每个人物的配音演出很棒，可以说确实是用心了的一款游戏。但这游戏没自动存档，还是固定视角，虽然是3D却只能靠鼠标点点点，操作难受得一批。游戏后半段有个潜行，画面黑漆漆还突然切换视角，半路卡住了不会自动绕行，痛苦加倍。。。但看在它是零几年的游戏，这些缺点我都可以理解。。。

I appreciate that it tries to tell a story and the voice acting is fine. Your evidence is also neatly displayed for you to refer back to, which is a plus. However, It is the gameplay that ruins it for me.

You walk at a snail's pace. It is so frustrating to have to click numerous times on screen in order to get your character to move. It isn't clear at all how to use the clue items at your disposal and you will walk around aimlessly trying to figure out what to do next when there is no one left to talk to. The lack of direction and essentially hoping that the player figures out what is next can make it incredibly frustrating. Can't say I would recommend this but I could see others possibly enjoying it.

It actually wasn’t implicity itself at all!

The game ran fine on Windows 11, but there were issues with the resolution. Some in-game documents were so small that reading them was extremely difficult without a magnifying glass. This really killed my motivation to play, since a large part of the game is spent reading text. The puzzles are exactly the kind I remember from older point-and-click games: if even one of your brain cells is idle, you won’t get anywhere. Still, for people who enjoy these kinds of games, this is definitely a solid title.

This is a massive step up from the previous Sherlock Holmes game by Frogwares: where The Mystery of The Mummy could only be enjoyed ironically, The Silver Earring is an authentic and loyal interpretation of the famous detective. The game plays like a classic point and click experience, with areas to be explored, people to be interrogated, and evidence to be found. The game takes place over five days, during which you'll visit multiple locations related to the crime. At the end of each day, a quiz has to be completed correctly to show that you've payed attention and have come to the correct conlusions.
Each scene is accompanied by wonderful classical music, which really fits the atmosphere of the era this story takes place in. Even the voice acting is on point most of the time, which cannot be said for all games released in those years.
It's not all good news though: you will still need the help of an online guide to find all evidence without going crazy. There are moments were the logic is truly baffling, and a few gameplay sections really haven't aged well. But with a good guide on the side for when you get inevitably stuck, this is a fun and nostalgic experience that is clearly made with a lot of love for the subject.

As much as I love that this is a Sherlock Holmes game, I can safely say that this the worst of the entire lot I have! For one thing, stealth just doesn't work well when it is a point-and-click game. I keep getting caught by the dog as I TRY TO keep out of the light, as well as keeping away from the four-legged ''friend''!

Yeah, I know! ''Timing is everything''. I just don't know why the devs didn't properly test the stealth section! It's why I give it no more than 4/10.

I just can't get this to run properly, the picture is distorted and part of it cut off, not adjustable in the game options (only even worse resolutions and no windowed mode available) I tried running it through DxWnd to adjust the aspect ratio. It does kinda work but now the game is so small on my monitor that I can't see/ read anything. And I have to be careful to not click outside of the game window, otherwise the cursor will disappear.

So I guess I MIGHT be able to run it if I adjust my general screen resolution (and messing up my desktop etc. while at it) and then run the game through DxWnd - but I get the feeling this is just not worth any more hassle. (I've only seen the intro, so can't really say of course.)

I bought this in a bundle so I won't refund it but in this state I honestly can't recommend it.

Edit: thanks to Red-rev I finally got it working! (See comments) But my bad review still stands as in my opinion it shouldn't be such a struggle. If devs don't care to do a small update to solve these kind of issues, they deserve a bad review, simple as that. Additionally I found no way to start the game via Steam, so no overlay (no screenshots, no playing time etc.). And if I minimize the game for a moment, the cursor in game won't move anymore - if I forgot to save beforehand, I have to start over from the last saving point. So it's POSSIBLE to play but with annoyances.

This game is a huge step-up from the horrendous Mystery of the Mummy. But despite these improvements, I still cannot recommend this game even on sale. In fact, I did not finish this game even though I was close to the end.

There are some positives. The game dropped the first-person pre-rendered pixelated images in favor of a third-person view with higher quality background. There is less pixel hunting. The graphics are fine for a low-budget game released in 2004. The voice acting while not great is less campy than its predecessor and serviceable when taking into account its budget. The story is better and the puzzles less frustrating.

All of this is unfortunately dragged down by the glaring flaws of this game. While the pixel hunting is less annoying compared to the previous game, it is still present.
The controls are really frustrating. You click on a spot to make Sherlock Holmes move there. However, he takes a LONG time to turn and the pathfinding seems to easily get stuck on random objects while the path look clear. This is even more terrible with the time-limited puzzles (more on that later). Moving into a room can sometimes turn into a nightmare as sometimes the angle of the pre-rendered backgrounds will not change unless you go to a specific spot in the corner of the screen. And when the angle change, it is often weirdly framed and is disorienting.
While more present and better explained than the previous title, the story is really confusing with too many characters and dialogues to examine. The game is divided into days and at the end of each one, you are challenged to a quiz where you must select dialogues and evidence to justify an answer. It is often not clear which piece must be used as there are multiple possible combinations from the point of view of the player but the game only accept a specific one. I had to use a guide to find out the correct answers to each questions.

The previously mentioned time-limited puzzles are what made me quit. There is a stealth section where you must enter a warehouse at night while not being seen by a guard and its dog. I almost quit at that point since the instructions provided by the guides were not enough and Sherlock Holmes controls made it worse. The guard and the dog have incoherent lines of sight. Fortunately, I followed the exact same movements than a let's play provided and even then the youtuber also had to redo it more than five times to manage it. I passed this stage but it was painful. Many will probably quit at this time.

The worst part is the maze. You must go to a place to collect evidence related to the case. To find this place, you must travel a maze. Due to the previously mentioned controls and third-person angles switching, it is hard to understand where you are going even with a walkthrough. When you find out that place, you need to put out a fire. This means that you have to backtrack to a pool of water you encountered at the beginning of the maze and redo the path. And all of this in a VERY SHORT LIMITED TIME. This is where I gave up on the game. The short time limit, the maze design, the awful controls and the disorienting camera view made this a very painful experience that it made me uninstall the game.

This is a shame because this game clearly had potential and shows how much Frogwares improved since its previous title. I got this game while buying the "Sherlock Holmes Collection" on sale and the games after this one are so much better. So for that I do not regret my purchase of this bundle, as the price on sale can excuse the presence of this bad game.

Verdict: 3.5/10. Get the "Sherlock Holmes Collection" bundle on Steam but you can skip this game and it is still worth the price (it is often on sale).

Technical information: I had no issues playing this game on Proton-Sarek 10.15. I used WineD3D and I did not encounter the issues mentioned by other reviewers related to characters looking too big or out of place related to their in-game position.

I did and didn't like it.

Mostly I liked it; the puzzles were generally fun and though a good deal of the game is what I have heard called a 'pixel hunt', it's really not bad. I would recommend it; how it compares to other Sherlock Holmes games I can't say, as I'm playing them in order of release and this was the one I started on. Also, on a note unrelated to the gameplay, I thought it was cool that when he was walking around (though not in the cutscenes) Holmes resembled Christopher Lee.

I think my main peeve was the ending. There is so much that goes on that Holmes is privy to and is kept from the player. True, that is how some of the stories are written, but by George, I'm playing as Holmes; I ought to know something if it's pertinent to the case and he knows it as well! How am I to know that such and such a photograph was taken in such and such a place if I don't get to see the photograph? In short, I had no idea who was guilty. Fortunately Holmes solves the case regardless of whether the player does or not, because I certainly did not.

A word of advice: save, save, SAVE! This game is like many point-and-click games in that there are 'game over' screens where you must revert to a previous save. I made this mistake once; don't make it yourself.

Ah ... Recommander le jeu ou ne pas le recommander ... Telle est la question. J'ai fait le premier choix, en grande partie par nostalgie et parce que j'aime l'univers du détective en général ...

[i]Sherlock Holmes : La Boucle d'argent[/i] est le second volet de la série de ce studio. J'y avais joué en étant jeune et j'avais bien eu de la peine à le finir. J'ai décidé de le relancer récemment ... C'est pourquoi d'entrée, je précise que ce jeu s'adresse avant tout aux passionnés de Sherlock Holmes, car oui, le jeu a très mal vieilli depuis 2004 et je pense qu'il ne s'adresse pas à quelqu'un de novice ou qui n'aime pas ce type de jouabilité.
Et je vais expliquer ce propos très simplement : le problème du [b][u]scénario[/u][/b]. [b]Il est à la fois le point fort et le point faible du jeu.[/b] Pourquoi un tel paradoxe ?

[h2]Une enquête très complète ...[/h2]
Tout d'abord, il faut dire que l'histoire est très complète, imaginée magnifiquement avec une enquête bien ficelée, et presque digne d'un film ou d'un polar. L'univers du détective est très bien respecté et nous nous retrouvons face à une affaire faramineuse, parce qu'elle devient rapidement colossale, je dirais même, monumentale. Des événements à rebondissements, en veux-tu en voilà, un tas de suspects, une histoire qui vous emmène à visiter des lieux très variés et faire des découvertes plus ou moins surprenantes. On sent (presque toujours avec le studio [i]Frogwares[/i]) que les développeurs se sont donnés du mal à proposer, je dirais même offrir une histoire digne d'un roman policier.
Par ailleurs, les graphismes sont plutôt plaisants pour l'époque et rendent la jouabilité assez immersive, on prend plaisir à découvrir de nouveaux endroits tout au long de l'histoire. De plus, le jeu vous rend à l'aise dès le départ avec une mécanique assez simple mais efficace : vous êtes sur le lieu du crime, vous vous baladez, vous interrogez les témoins, vous vous lancez à la recherche d'indices ...
[h2]... mais trop d'informations.[/h2]
Seulement voilà, encore faudrait-il que le jeu soit à la hauteur de cette épopée, que le scénario soit totalement assumé par le jeu lui-même ... et là, c'est beaucoup plus compliqué :
Nous sommes très vite submergés par les informations. Les documents s'empilent, une valse des témoins se forme, énormément de noms de personnes sont cités ... Et puis, il y a "des affaires" dans l'affaire ... Ce qui fait qu'au final, on pourrait aisément décrocher de la trame narrative et se contenter de chercher les indices et d'avancer dans l'histoire sans pour autant la suivre de près.
[h2]Vous êtes spectateur, pas enquêteur ![/h2]
Une fois que vous avez fini le jeu, vous comprenez son principal défaut : nous ne sommes que de vulgaires spectateurs de l'histoire. Ou tout au plus, seulement des chercheurs d'indices de temps à autre, mais pas plus. Nous ne sommes pas Sherlock Holmes, nous ne sommes que des intermédiaires pratiques ... En effet, toute la résolution de l'enquête se joue sur des petits détails, à un tel point que même si vous êtes extrêmement attentif, il sera toujours difficile de réunir vous-même toutes les pièces du puzzle pour tout comprendre de A à Z. [spoiler]Par ailleurs, on a l'aveu de cette impression durant la cinématique de fin : Sherlock vous explique pendant de longues minutes comment tout s'est déroulé ... et là vous comprenez tous les petits détails que vous avez négligés ... Cet aveu montre que l'histoire n'est pas totalement et idéalement exploitée. En d'autres termes, elle parait trop complexe pour un jeu qui se termine en une dizaine d'heures. [/spoiler]On sent bien aussi que les développeurs ont pensé à ce qu'on garde le fil des événements : il y a des questionnaires à la fin de chaque journée, et vous devez répondre aux questions en apportant les preuves qui justifient vos réponses. Si les questions sont relativement faciles si on suit un minimum l'histoire, certaines sont parfois ardues, ou alors il est difficile de retrouver le document adéquate parmi toute votre paperasse ! Ajouter à cela que la jouabilité a tout de même très mal vieilli : on dirige Holmes (et parfois Watson) à la troisième personne : les déplacements sont lents, parfois hasardeux, les changements de plan par la caméra sont très perturbateurs ... Hormis les quelques petits bugs graphiques qu'on peut retrouver (le jeu date, on ne peut pas tout lui reprocher non plus), il faut parfois trouver des indices tous petits ... Ce qui fait qu'on peut rester bloquer sur des phases de jeu très longtemps en tournant en rond en se demandant ce qu'on a loupé ...
Et je ne parlerai pas de certaines phases de jeu complètement difficiles !! [spoiler]Spéciale dédicace à l'épisode de la forêt ... J'espère ne pas être le seul à avoir été traumatisé ... C'est une épreuve chronométrée, et vous vous perdez très facilement dans la forêt ... Mais justement, c'est impossible de la terminer du premier coup ! DONC si vous perdez et que vous n'aviez pas sauvegardé la partie juste avant, le GAME OVER vous renvoie .... à la dernière sauvegarde ...... ATTENTION, pas de sauvegarde automatique à l'époque, ne vous faites pas avoir !! Sauvegardez avant cette MAUDITE FORÊT qui vous veut DU MAL !! Mention spéciale au temps qui vous est attribué : quand vous réussissez bien l'épreuve après plusieurs tentatives, vous vous rendez compte que ça se joue à rien au niveau du temps ! [/spoiler]

Bref, tous ces points ajoutent à la lourdeur du jeu, et c'est fort regrettable ...

Malgré tout ... Même si d'une manière générale et à mon sens le jeu a très mal vieilli ... Je le recommande, car on sent qu'avec ce volet, il y avait un gros potentiel pour la suite ... Et en effet, le studio nous l'a confirmé, avec notamment le très bon [i]Sherlock Holmes :[/i] [i]La Nuit des sacrifiés[/i], sorti deux ans après, qui commence très nettement à montrer de très belles choses et à s'éloigner des erreurs de [i]La Boucle d'argent[/i].

Et puis enfin, si je le recommande, c'est avant tout parce que le jeu a une âme. Quand un jeu n'a pas été fait à la va-vite, quand il y a du sérieux dans certains détails ... ça ne trompe pas, même s'il est loin d'être parfait, on sent quand des personnes se sont investies durablement pour la création d'un univers ... Et oui, même si le jeu est loin d'être parfait, on sent qu'il y a une lancée prometteuse avec [i]La Boucle d'argent[/i].

It is simplicity itself!
Such a wonderful game with an intriguing story and compelling, deep characters.

Some things that I would critique are:
- While I love the fact that the game doesn't hold your hand through anything, it often expects utmost precision of understanding the most vague and borderline misleading hints.
- There is a great deal of lore and evidence that you gather, in forms of written down dialogue, various documents and written down details that were noticed throughout the locations. They are all amazing, filled with random little facts and really let the player get immersed into the world. But they are also sometimes not well labeled, often refer to the same thing and are unimportant in a big portion. Unfortunately, the game requires you to go through them and fill out a quiz at the end of each little game chapter, which combined with often vague hints and questions, can be pretty confusing, time consuming and very often annoying.
- Interactable details are easily missable, so waving the cursor all over the screen is advised from time to time.

Other than that, the game is such an amazing and immersive detective experience, you can FEEL the emotion in interactions with each of the characters and not only does it often amaze you, it makes you feel like you are part of it all, like you are working alongside Sherlock and solving the case together.

Не советую. Игра в стиле старых квестов, то есть абсолютно недружелюбна к игроку.

Мало того, что нет подсказок, из-за чего приходится ходить туда-сюда бесконечно и дрочить в пиксили в надежде найти непонятно что, так еще и курсор кривой. Ты можешь просто ткнуть на предмет и не подобрать его, подумать, что так и должно быть, и забить, а на самом деле предмет подбирается, просто нужно отвести курсор чуть правее. И пожалуйста, еще пол часа хождений туда-сюда.

Абсолютно вырвиглазные тексты мелкими буквами на мятых письмах заставляют глаза страдать, а писем этих там ого-го.

Отсутствие подсказок В ПРИНЦИПЕ КАК ТАКОВЫХ напрягает еще сильнее кривого курсора. Буквально ситуация: мужик дает ключ и просит проверить дом. Шерлок подходит к двери, использует ключ и говорит ЗАКРЫТО и Я НЕ МОГУ ВОЙТИ СЮДА ЭТИМ ПУТЕМ. Я пол часа дрочил в пиксели и не мог понять, что я делаю не так, пока не открыл прохождение и не посмотрел. Оказывается, на языке Шерлока "я не могу войти сюда этим путем" значит "я должен поговорить с ментом и попросить у него разрешения на вход", хотя этот мент раньше был в принципе неактивен, а во время разговора с мужиком дающим ключ, стоял рядом и никак не давал о себе знать. И такого там еще очень много.

Ах да, бегать Шерлок научится только на второй локации, в первой он будет вяло ходить, а игрок грустно терпеть. А когда дойдет до пикселедрочерства, будет вообще весело.

Короче, классика старых квестов. Надень на змею уздечку, чтобы она превратилась в пегаса и дала тебе сахар, который в конце нейтрализует яд ядовитых растений. Сегодня игра смотрится ужасно и без прохождения проходить даже не стоит пытаться. А с прохождением, понятное дело, весь интерес уходит в ноль. Следующие игры по Шерлоку в разы лучше и интересее, эту же я дальше второго акта не осилил.

It was much better than its predecessor Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Persian Carpet. I liked the storyline a lot more, and I actually enjoyed playing it. There are really only two main downsides. One is that it crashes frequently, so you really need to save often. The second downside is that there are segments that auto end the game if you are not successful, so again, frequently save the game. It is not fun going back through tons that you already completed.

All in all it is a charming point and click adventure with no moon-logic, which is always a plus for Sherlock Holmes game.

Uno de los primeros juegos que jugué en su día, pero cuyo recuerdo está bastante borroso en mi mente.
Jugué este juego hará unos 20 años y no lo recordaba tan difícil. Generalmente los juegos de Sherlock destacan por ser complicados, siempre te quedas atascado en algún punto y te obliga a ver las soluciones para seguir avanzando en el juego. No obstante, con mi experiencia en los juegos de Sherlock Holmes de Frogwares (he jugado todos), he de decir que estos primeros eran más complicados que los actuales, pero si te gusta la investigación los disfrutas al máximo.
Hay que tener en cuenta un punto importante y que si no jugaste el juego en su día, debes tenerlo en cuenta. Es un juego del 2004 y, por tanto, tiene sus limitaciones. Es difícil que te sorprenda si ves el juego desde la actualidad. Por esa razón, para disfrutarlo al máximo hay que verlo desde su contexto de salida. Eso sí, al ser del 2004 puede haber problemas a la hora de ejecutar el juego en el ordenador, pero he investigado algo y se puede conseguir ejecutarlo.
El juego en sí está bastante bien y recomiendo jugarlo. Eso sí, no lo pagaría de forma individual, sino con el pack de juegos de Sherlock, en los que te vienen bastantes y que recomiendo jugarlos en orden cronológico a su fecha de salida para ver la evolución de estos juegos. Si los comparamos con el resto, este ocuparía una posición baja, pero es lo normal, puesto que, en mi opinión, los juegos del Sherlock van mejorando con el paso del tiempo. Sin embargo, este lo encuentro muy interesante y recomiendo que le deis una oportunidad.

Ich befinde dieses Spiel für kaum spielbar.

- Die Hotspots sind teilweise verschoben (Beispielsweise um eine Tür zu öffnen muss man in die Zimmerecke klicken)

- Die Kameraansichten während Gesprächen sind schlecht bzw. fehlerhaft(?), so sehen wir zum Beispiel ab der Nase abgeschnittene Gesichter oder bestaunen Sherlocks Hintern anstatt den Gesprächspartner

- Manchmal haben wir das Standardicon, manchmal ein Fußschritticon, es ist nicht klar warum es mal so und mal so ist. Immer wieder bleibt man wo stecken und kann sich nicht vernünftig bewegen

- Das Inventar bzw. Item-Management ist schrecklich. Briefe lassen sich nicht lesen obwohl da "lesen" steht, aber weder ein Links- noch ein Rechtsklick auf "lesen" liest das Schriftstück dann tatsächlich. Ausgewählte Items muss man wieder an ihren Platz zurückklicken, kein Rechtsklick der ausgewählte Items verschwinden lässt.

- Gegenstände kann man nicht grundsätzlich auf Personen anwenden, stattdessen wird das wie ein normaler Linksklick gewertet (sehr nervig!), manchmal muss man das aber eben doch mit bestimmten Items machen (wenn es einen Hinweis darauf gibt)

- Manche Schauplätze muss man mit der Lupe näher betrachten. Wenn wir beispielsweise einen Aschenbecher ansehen wollen, sagt Sherlock da fehle noch etwas (nämlich die Lupe). Wählen wir dann mit der Lupe aus sehen wir das ganze von näher, aber nicht so nah dass ein tatsächlicher Lupeneinsatz nötig wäre (wir suchen keine Fingerabdrücke sondern sehen einfach nur hin). Total idiotisch! Besonders wenn man nicht weiß was man da eigentlich ansieht und Sherlock anstatt es dem Spieler zu sagen, darauf besteht dass "da noch etwas fehle" was aber nicht immer die Lupe sein muss

Alles in allem spielt sich das Spiel sehr langsam, Sherlock bewegt sich langsam und träge und bleibt irgendwie gern wo hängen. Es gibt wenig Hotspotanzeigen und die die es gibt scheinen oft buggy zu sein.
Mir reichts nach 1 Stunde und 2 Anläufen schon. Das macht keinen Spaß!

I am fresh from Holmes' 10-minute long summation of the case.... how in the eff was I supposed to figure out all of that?

Never mind, it's perfectly fine to sit back and be dazzled by how Holmes is able to construct a flowing narrative about how a crime was committed based off sparse testimonies, documentations, evidences and exagerrated tales of certain characters' demises.

The Secret of the Silver Earring is FAR better than The Mystery of the Mummy, and is worth playing a quarter of a century after its release. But there's no point in getting stuck on such an old, clunky point-and-click adventure game. I kept [url=https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/920853-sherlock-holmes-the-silver-earring/faqs/39652]a guide on hand[/url] that helped me through some tight spots, but I was mostly able to progress according to my own wits.

I loved the voice actor for Holmes even more than Mystery of the Mummy. The dialogue is very well written, sounding appropriate for high class individuals in one of England's more sophisticated eras.

Even though I never came close to figuring out this case on my own, I enjoyed the investigation. Well.. mostly. The two timed segments sucked.

There are plenty of rough edges and visual glitches in this game, but it has me looking forward to my exploration of Frogwares' Sherlock Holmes games.

Game is good but don't know why I couldn't play more than 1 hour stretch every time because I always end up getting sleepy and ended up sleeping as well, may be its due to background music or spending time reading texts in sherlock journal.

Too many characters, letters and notes to remember, hard to remember who is who because in some text the same person first name is used and in another letter or article same person only last name is used, quite confusing and will lose trail in story.

Солидный представитель квестовых игр из 2004, с приличной для своего времени и жанра графикой, занятными головоломками [spoiler] кроме цементного завода, очень кривая и поломанная штука [/spoiler] и затягивающим сюжетом. Даже спустя столько лет проходится если не на одном дыхании, то за пару вечеров точно. И оставляет после себя приятные ощущения пройденной интересной игры.

Pues tengo que decir que no me ha gustado el juego.
Llevaba muchos años sin tocar una aventura de Holmes, desde el añejo Caso de la rosa tatuada, que también me decepcionó. No voy a quejarme de los gráficos, pues son aceptables para su época, pero he terminado el juego sin hacerme a sus controles, que me resultan de lo más incómodo que he probado en una aventura point & click. El ritmo del juego es tremendamente lento, con desplazamientos eternos de los personajes, errores en la detección de colisiones, puzles nada intuitivos, movimientos muy ortopédicos, objetos difícilmente visibles en el escenario, errores de traducción (algunos incluso explicando mecánicas claves del juego, como los cuestionarios con los que finaliza cada día), doblajes muy planos, en los que el actor interpreta una frase sin conocer el contexto en el que se pronuncia y alguna que otra salida inesperada al escritorio. La música se hace muy repetitiva y machacona y, por mucho que lo intenté, no conseguí bajar su volumen. Lo más rescatable es la historia, aunque se vuelve predecible demasiado pronto, ya que, salvando algunos giros secundarios que se dan en los dos últimos días de la historia, resulta bastante obvio quién es el asesino desde casi el principio
En definitiva que se trata de una pobre versión de Holmes en un juego que decididamente no pasará a la historia

- Gameplay: Das Sammeln von Gesprächsprotokollen, Beweisen und Texten ist interessant und die Quizzes nach jedem Abschnitt fordern zum Nachdenken auf
- Grafik: Für ein Spiel, was mehr als 20 Jahre auf dem Buckel hat, ist die Grafik akzeptabel

Neutral:
- Technik: Das Spiel läuft flüssig, es gibt jedoch Probleme mit Clipping und der Z-Achse, sodass Charaktere zwischendurch aussehen als würden sie schweben
- Rätsel: Im Gegensatz zum ersten Teil sind die Rätsel besser konzipiert. Aber auch hier benötigte ich an ein, zwei Stellen ein Walkthrough und kann mir nicht erklären, wie man auf manche Lösungen kommen soll.

After odd and forgettable "Mystery of the Mummy", Frogware games cooked a bit, and released Secret of the Silver Earring. And damn, despite game being old, it aged rather well, at least for me!

To begin with, no patching is needed. At all. Sure, resolution might feel odd, but is probably necessary due to engine, and I got used to it quickly. Perspective and gameplay also changed, instead of that odd First person view, now it is more common to the genre "click to move character to ceratin position on the level", while you are watching from the side/top. It works well. Graphics are old, but not too bad, and music, while also being just some classics (afaik some music from Tchaikovsky and few other great composers was used?) fits well, and even gives some "nostalgic" feeling

Regarding voice acting, gonna put a separate paragraph. In russian version, Mr Holmes is voiced by great Vasily Livanov, a person who played Sherlock Holmes in famous "Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson" series USSR, widely known and loved at least in post USSR countries. And he does a good job at voice acting, contributing to atmosphere a lot. While Watson is not voiced by Vitaly Solomin (person who played him in series mentioned above), the characters are definitely made with those actors in mind. Regarding voice acting of other characters - ranges. Some are adequate, ground to earth, normal. Some are... overacting? In an odd way? As if it was a comedy or theatrical play of sorts. It is a bit odd, inconsistent. Also Inspector Lestrade falls into same category, he sounds as if he has sore throat, and it is a weird balance of speaking normally, no overreacting, and that weird... sore throat effect. Hard talk about english VA, but heard that it is done by actual british actors, sounds great to me
Overall voice acting is nice, with few oddities. Also there are 2-3 moments when characters repeat their lines, probably forgot to cut incorrect/bad attempts, in one case Sherlock repeats his line three time, lel

And now to the sweet part. Gameplay/story. It is an actual damn detective now, with rather believable story! Maybe a bit complex and some hints are a bit loose(not spoilers, but small hints ahead, better skip to next paragraph if you didn't play the game yet), like here - you have three culprits in the end of the story, one is rather easy to figure out, same about the second, but third is so obscure and hard to deduct, plus crucial hints to his identity appear only in the last chapter of the story!

Anyway, there is actual detective work - collecting evidence, samples, checking footprints, recording data, analysing findings back at Baker Street. There are small fragments where you play as Watson too, usually interviewing people, or researching some areas by requrest of Mr. Holmes. By the end of each chapter there is a small "quiz" where you analyse your findings and have to answer certain questions, like "Were the doors locked that day?", where you answer positively or negatively, and have to support your answer with evidence
In the end of the story you have an option to select culprits from the list of suspects yourself, and align them to specific murder/crime they did, which is really cool. And if you made a mistake, or didn't figure it our, don't worry, you still have access to ending cutscene (be aware, it is pretty damn long, apparently around 20 minutes), where Sherlock explains the case. It is cool, while you probably will solve a lot of things, you feel like actually reading Sherlock Holmes story, where he is the lead, he figures it all, and you are an assistant of sorts. The tone of the game overall is rather medium, not too grim and serious (mostly because of some situational voice acting goofs), but not overly stupid or comical, say, Lestrade is not shown as complete idiot like some adaptations like doing

Two parts of the game might be difficult gameplay wise (one - sneaking past guard and his dog twice, quite an annoying moment. And second - going through maze in the woods, then rushing back and into the maze again while the clock is ticking). Chapter two is the one that has... three? Difficult puzzles that actually took some time, pen and paper. Only chapter with that kind of difficult puzzles not really related to case solving and deduction

Overall, a great direction, definitely recommend trying it if you are not afraid of slightly old games, and like Sherlock Holmes stories. And I. personally, looking forward to playing next games in the series...

Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring é um jogo adventure point and click, onde jogamos com o lendário detetive acompanhado de seu fiel escudeiro, Watson. Nesta história, temos que desvendar o mistério envolvendo a morte de um rico empresário na noite do aniversário de sua filha. Aqui vamos usar todo o poder de observação e dedução do Sherlock em uma gameplay que temos de conversar com os envolvidos na trama para pegar seus depoimentos, coletar provas e resolver alguns puzzles para progredir na história.
Como este jogo foi lançado para o PC no longínquo ano de 2004, quem se interessar deve estar preparado para encarar um jogo com controles travados (como é um point & click só usa mouse) e gráficos completamente ultrapassados. Pode levar um bom tempo para se acostumar ou mesmo você não irá e vai largar ele no começo, mas para quem insistir, não vai se arrepender nessa história onde você vai se sentir o próprio Sherlock Holmes, colhendo depoimentos e provas para resolver os mistérios que aparecem durante a gameplay. Durante a minha jogatina, não presenciei bugs, crashes ou travamentos, mas esteja preparado também para jogar em resoluções inferiores as do seu monitor e cutscenes borradas e travadas em 25 FPS, pois como eu disse antes, é um jogo de 2004 sem melhorias.

Por fim, eu como um fã dos livros de Sherlock Holmes e por gostar de jogos com boas histórias, recomendo demais para jogadores com um perfil parecido. Mas se você não tem paciência para ler textos ou não consegue se adaptar a jogos antigos com funcionalidades técnicas bem limitadas, eu recomendo a não investir tempo e dinheiro aqui para não se frustrar.

Pretty frustrating. To be fair a lot of adventure games have illogical puzzles but some of these puzzles required some guesswork, the algorithms for which took a very long, tedious time to confirm. I have misgivings about the quizzes. I don't think they considered false positives when selecting the evidence. And I think I was subjected to a bug, which required me to confirm w/the Universal Hint System so that I new to go back to an old savegame--very frustrating. Finally, misspellings and inappropriate letter case along with some characters saying LOO-TENANT and others saying LEF-TENANT is inconsistent w/a see-everything-miss-nothing theme.
What's good about it: music is well chosen and the interface is intuitive. The imagery added to the whole experience.

Знаете, для меня данная игра относится к тому типу игр, которые ты, спустя много-много лет вновь запускаешь из ностальгии, и понимаешь - тебе абсолютно все равно, насколько она местами кривая и неидеальная. Да, смотря на неё сейчас, видно, что она и технически кривовата, и озвучка странновата (озвучивают то актёры, но точно не дубляжа, а просто театральные, это прям слышно в некоторых местах из-за переигрывания), и откровенно бредовые моменты на время и с обходом сторожа, но на это, честно, закрываешь глаза.

Зато есть и куча плюсов. Например, музыка: я не любитель классики, но здесь Чайковский, Шуман и Григ настолько в тему, что это одни из немногих классических произведений, что засели в моём сердечке (ещё бы авторы в титрах названия композиций написали - цены бы им не было, а так пришлось кучу времени потратить, чтобы все композиции по отдельности найти). Сюжет оригинальный, действительно завлекает, хоть звёзд с неба и не хватает, но, что самое главное, в духе Сэра Артура Конан Дойла.

Ну и Василий Ливанов на озвучке Холмса - большего мне в жизни и не надо, только за это можно простить все остальные минусы.

В целом, игра заслуженно является классикой квестов, наравне с Сибирией, Чёрным зеркалом, Смертью как искусством и т.д. Но для новичков, конечно, без всей этой пелены ностальгии проникнуться этой игрой будет непросто, как и всем этим жанром в принципе. И да, мне 19 лет)))
