I wish I had played this in 2011. I'd probably spend more time trying to figure it out. I fail rather quickly but I feel like there are so many layers. That said, I think if you are into these turn based games it'll be fun for you as well.
Listen, if you're looking for a game about unifying Japan, you might have found it. But if you're looking for a game where you simply unify Japan, you've knocked on the wrong door. Sengoku by Paradox is Crusader Kings, but with Katanas, and that explains a lot!

No tutorial, "easy" difficulty ♥♥♥♥♥ you over at any point in game. Can't imagine what very hard difficulty is like. No tutorial, only an 88 page "manual". You need to read 88 pages of a "manual" to be able to play a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ (at best mediocre) game. Hints in the game are just that. Hints. You can't even find a youtube guide for this game as no one plays it and no one knows about it. So unless you want to spend a day reading a manual getting a PhD in a trash game, you will be confused, lost and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over. Unplayable.

Mostly played this in the beta (for which I was a tester), finally got around to buying the full release in 2025.
I think this game is decent if you view it as a fancy version of Risk and don't consider it "Grand Strategy" as the other Pdx inhouse titles.
I personally mod down the honor requirements for declaring war in defines.lua to something like:

This game at the heart is a war game and I think it's ineffectual to stifle it so hard (and it's mainly the small clan starts that suffer).

The game is alright. It is one of the stepping stones the Paradox Interactive had to make in order to perfect the formula for Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings games.
This means that it lacks the complexity and proper game balance but it still is a good game if you like the period and grand strategy games.

Ce jeu est très probablement une démo technique pour le moteur de jeu Clauzwitz de Paradox qui donnera par la suite CK2, EU4, HOI4 et toute les itérations venues et à venir.
Les mécaniques sont simples à aborder car peu poussées. L'interface similaire à CK2 est un peu complexe (encore une fois ce jeu est le premier sous ce moteur nouveau à l'époque). Malgré cela on arrivera a passer quelques bonnes heures de jeu s'il l'on veut s'essayer aux jeux de grande stratégie de Paradox et s'il l'on est attiré par le contexte du Japon féodal.
Considérez prendre ce jeu s'il est soldé vous aurez peu de regrets.

This game feels like its the retarded weeb brother of CK2, set in Japan. The combat, province management, and court interactions lack depth and become monotonous, leaving players to repeat the same actions frequently.

На мое удивление, графически карта сенгоку выглядит лучше чем в ск2 и примерно на уровне еу4, ее солнечность напоминает последние игры парадохов. Механики просты, но для такой небольшой игры это нормально. Очень приятные впечатления.
What this practically is, is a Crusader Kings II with no DLC, and a bit less. Even then, the atmosphere of this game, even though it becomes squarely boring, is still somewhat worth it. Get this on a sale, it's fun to just watch who Japan unites under, and that's the only thing current I've been using it for.

I absolutely love this game, but... once you figure it out, the gameplay becomes boring. I wish there was a bit more depth—not complexity necessarily, as some games add needless complexity, but real depth—to the systems and core mechanics of the game.
As many others have already stated, this is essentially a CKII Beta. Those familiar with that game will at least be able to understand the basics here, albeit that many of the systems and features of CKII are either missing or incomplete. As a test bed for CKII there's some interest here for the die hard Paradox fan, but from my thankfully brief experience of this title, I would advise you to go play it instead.
If you're here for the Sengoku Jidai period in Japanese history, then I would recommend Shogun 2 TW or Nobunaga's Ambition. I'm rather partial to Shogun 2 myself.
In its current state, Sengoku is effectively an unfinished game that lacks polish and content. As such it can be tedious to play at best, downright frustrating at worst.
However. if you're looking for a Daimyo death simulator, then look no further. This is the game for you. No sooner will you get a new clan leader than he'll be dead. You could argue that life expectancy in those days was pretty bad, which is true, but this is a game, a strategy game at that. Having the character you are playing constantly dying on you gets a little tedious after a while.
Not as good as CK2 but not bad. It still seems to have a lot of European feel to it.
It's fun in the early game until one decent similarly sized clan attacks you then every single other clan dogpiles onto you until you cease to exist. It's ck2 but complete ass. Waste of time to even try tbh.

Si bien considero que graficamente, esteticamente y a nivel de musica esta bastante bien logrado, en lo que respecta a la jugabilidad no lo disfrute mucho, se sale algo de la linea tradicional de juegos Paradox, no esta mal que haya innovacion pero me parece muy enfocado en la diplomacia y el micromanagement dejando que la accion del terreno y la estrategia de las batallas pase a un segundo plano, aca es donde no lo disfruto, apenas pude jugar una campaña y no avance mas que destrozando a un enemigo vecino precisamente por eso, la progresion es algo lenta y dificil de sacarle la vuelta.
Es un buen titulo pero de calidad inferior a otros de la saga, Como complemento al valor puedo destacar que tiene cromos.
4/10 - No lo recomiendo al menos en mi experiencia, no obstante destaco como positivo que esta en español.

The concept is cool, but this game has a severe lack of content. If you want a way better "sengoku period" experience; the "sengoku" mod for CK3 is great.
It looks like other paradox game but without the basics functionalities to play it : you can split your armies but you cannot select them separately, you cannot do anything against an unhappy vassal, etc.

Needs focus trees or everyone just stays at peace
Me pillé este juego por tres razones:
(1) Me gusta la época y lugar en la que está ambientado, (2) decían que era una versión beta del Crusader Kings II y (3) estaba muy barato.
La ambientación cumple. ¿A quién no le llamaría la idea de un CKII pero en el que puedes jugar en Japón? Por desgracia, esa es la mejor parte. Lo que los usuarios dicen de que es una versión beta del CKII es completamente cierto o incluso peor, porque parece un alpha. Lo que hace divertido el CKII no lo tienes (o lo tienes pero muy básico) en este juego.
El tema del desarrollo de personajes, las historias que se crean, todas las posibilidades y rutas que hay en el CKII, olvídate de todo eso. ¿Diálogos con tomas de decisiones? Mínimas. ¿Las infinidades de rasgos que existen en el CKII que hacen que cada personaje haya vivido su propia historia? Fuera. ¿Las rencillas entre personajes porque centenares de razones? Tampoco. ¿Tramas por temas de religiones o sectas? Nada. De lo poco que hay sobre eso es que dependiendo de la religión tienes unos bonus en un par de cosas y poco más. Todo se siente por hacer y no puedes montarte tramas interesantes. Ya con esto ya has matado el juego.
El combate lo tienes, es similar, pero quítale todo el tema de las tecnologías, todos los rasgos de los personajes que afectan tanto en los combates cuerpo a cuerpo o al comandar, que la moral sea algo casi aleatorio en este juego que lo hace aún más impredecible todo, solo hay tres tipos de unidades (y una es inaccesible) o que al asediar se tarde una burrada en conquistar independientemente de las fuerzas que envíes.
La banda sonora no se puede comparar con la que te ofrece el CKII. Está bien a secas.
A nivel gráfico, al principio, piensas que está más o menos igual que el CKII. Pero cuando ves que los menús son confusos o las miniaturas de los personajes a penas se aprecian y hace que el resultado final quede feo. Que los personajes sean prácticamente indistinguibles y lleven las mismas ropas hace que pierda frente a toda la variedad de rostros, ropas y culturas que te ofrece el CKII.
Con lo que quiero llegar es que la versión gratuita del CKII ofrece muchas más posibilidades que este juego. Mi recomendación, y si es que tienes ganas de tocar este juego, es que te instales el mod del CKII (NMIH Sengoku Jidai) que te pone el mismo mapa. Por tanto tienes lo que llama la atención de este título (mapa y ambientación), pero con todas las mecánicas pulidas del CKII. No recomiendo el experimento, a menos que seas alguien que le ha dedicado muchas horas a los juegos de CK o Paradox en general y quiere probar el experimento fallido.

Exactly like Crusader Kings, but only in Japan (excluding Hokkaido for some unknown reason...) and lacking the depth. It's quality is fine, but it feels a bit restricted compared to Crusader Kings.
I'd be disappointed, if I had bought it at full price, but at a discount it's quite recommendable.

This is a 12 years old game in the same style than Europa Universalis. It is supposed to be a historical game placed a the period of the Sengoku Jidai (or the "Warring States period") in Japan which places it roughly from 1467 (Onin war) until the early 1600. It is essentially a wargame, as you have to use all necessary means to become the de facto ruler of Japan by controlling a minimum of 50% of its lands in order to become Shogun.

The whole of Japan is divided into its historical "countries" (kuni) and each of these are divided into smaller provinces that you need to conquer one by one. The tools at your disposition are your armies, your diplomacy, your marriages with other factions, and even the use of ninjas. All factions are historical, some are more powerful than others of course, and the player may decide to play either a powerful clan, or a weaker clan at his leisure. The game constrains the player by limiting the management capacity to 5 lands at a time, meaning it is necessary to distribute the lands conquered to subordinates in order to avoid revolts. As a player, you will have to provide lands and titles to your subordinates and make sure they stay loyal to you. You will need to name ministers in order to fortify your lands, build economic infrastructure and oversee security.

It performs well, has no bugs that I could observe, and provides good replayability as your choice of faction to play is indeed quite big. The game is decent, and once you get the hand of it you will probably enjoy it. Once you've played it a few times however, it is possible that you start regretting the lack of depth that it shows.

The game in itself is not complicated, but the tutorial is so basic that you'll essentially start playing not knowing really what you are doing. Fortunately, there is a Manual available, and I would recommend reading it in order not to lose too much time fumbling around. It is a historical game and an effort has been made to make it historically accurate. Replayability is good, any faction can be played from any of the geographical locations in Japan. The amount of details is sometimes astonishing, for instance when you want to marry somebody from your clan, the number of possible brides or grooms throughout Japan will be a bit overwhelming. It can be played on a 10 years old PC and does not require a lot of graphical power. It will take less than 700 MB on your HD.

It is hampered by a bad tutorial that will make you search your way around trying to figure out what does what. After a few games, you risk getting bored as, once understood, the mechanics of the game are quite simple. See this game as being similar to a Europa Universalis IV lite or a Crusader King II lite. The Steam overlay does not work by default, which means that the hours you will be playing will not be recorded by Steam. It took me some time before I noticed my time was not getting recorded anywhere (I've played much more than just 22 hours). In order to fix this, you need to go to your Steam files and rename two files: (1) rename Sengoku.exe to Sengoku_Launcher.exe and (2) rename SengokuGame.exe to Sengoku.exe

Even though there was some serious work done on this game, I would not recommend it for the full asking price. Although there is good replayability, gameplay is limited, and once you understand your way around you might get eventually bored by the repetitiveness of it. My recommendation would be to buy it when at a good discount if this type of game interests you.

Lack of content! Play Koei titles instead of this for more historical accuracy and better mechanics, like nobunaga's ambition games.
Not a bad game, Does still crash a little 4th day the graphics were top notch. However it's no longer supported and . It is playable with some modifications on a new machine I'm sure I could get some sort of emulator and modify the code to make it playable but it's just not worth it with so many other games out there to choose from be aware that the user manual isn't wholly accurate either
This is an update: Did manage to make it playable not a bad game enjoyable to play just make sure you save every once in awhile long-term you man counter a crash or two overall game is still enjoyable the mechanics of it
This is a perfect beginner Paradox game. New to Grand Strategy? This game is simple and easy to learn and master. It gets you used to all the base mechanics you'll need to play the majority of Grand Strategy games. A solid and fun entry title.

Самая непривычная для СНГ-сектора игра от Парадоксов. Вы управляете Японией, строите Сёгунат, и... Да блин, по факту тут почти всё то, что есть в Виктории 2. Правда немного урезано. Думаю ценителям понравится. Правда есть пара минусов которые хотелось бы подчеркнуть: Трудно найти русификатор, и нет рабочего онлайна. А так... Берите по скидке. Не пожалеете)

It feels like a prototype for Crusader Kings, a lot of the UI elements and sound effects are exactly like CK but with a Japanese look.
Conquering - it's exactly like the Synthetics invasion in EU4 if you've played that, but with CK combat roles and sieging mechanics.
If you want to take a quick look, for historical purposes, be my guest.
It is a great time waster. Good music, fun mechanics. Worth the price tag.

Sengoku is basically just Crusader Kings but in Japan. And I believe it was most likely a testbed for the CK2 mechanics and systems. But seriously, why does it have better graphics than CK2? :\

Feio, não intuitivo e pra completar o pacote de merda, o jogo tem um defeito cósmico que, se você jogar ele(acredite ele da ruim você jogando ele) por algumas horas 7/8 o jogo simplesmente PARA de funciona e fica crashando toda hora quando inicia um save. Piores R$16 gastos na minha vida inteira, não compre essa bosta.
