Storyline

Regaining consciousness you smell the damp. Opening your eyes you see the stone walls of the chamber flickering by the light of the fire; you stumble to your feet and kick a helmet clattering across the floor. Slowly the ache in your head begins to subside and you notice the beginnings of a passage. After a few steps the darkness consumes you. Returning to the safely of the fire you see a LIDAR scanner on the floor - a trigger press results in a faint glow coming from inside the helmet. You put the helmet on, adjust the beam-width and proceed into the abyss….

Scanner Sombre is a short, but fun "horror" adventure overall.

I REALLY recommend getting this game on a good sale since the game is very short and doesn't have re-playability at all, you can easily beat the game in an hour, but if you take the time to observe and explore the map more deeply, it may take from 2 to 3 hours.

The horror factor isn't there at all (in my opinion). I don't precisely search for cheap jumpscares, but I did expect more... well, horror. It does have a "spooky" atmosphere since there is sometimes loud sounds, random silhouettes that come out of nowhere, and it's obviously dark, but "horror"? Debatable.

Overall, the scanner tech is really well made and enjoyable, but it does get kinda boring and old like 30 mins into playing, the map is really good and there are some parts that even with the dot graphics, are really beautiful.

Short but unique, Scanner Sombre is worth sitting down and playing. In one session, ideally - the journey through the cave is best experienced in one unbroken path. Great sound design, a unique mechanic and visual style, combined with snippets of story that all contribute to the creeping sense of dreadful beauty that only a dark, dead cave can provide.

While I don't typically have a knack for horror games, I really enjoyed this one!!! No jumpscares, chase sequences, or gore, though you may get startled a couple times because of a sudden loud noise or visual effect. The style of horror isn't about suspense and adrenaline; but unfamiliarity, curiousity, and a bit or exestentialism. You can't die, (yes there is a good reason why that's the case, but it's revealed towards the end of the game, and I'm not going to spoil anythin [: ) but you can get scared. No matter how much the spirits try, all they can do, is warn you. You want to explore the cave. Even though you can't see, you must explore it. The unfamiliarity of your surroundings mocks you, taunting you to explore and to travel deeper into the cave. You rediscover the forbidden knowledge, and yet you will crave more. It's almost as if knowledge is layed out like breadcrumbs, leading you into a big trap. You are aware of this possibility, but what's there to lose? You could go back to the safety of your tent, but no. You've already come this far. Knowledge, (like garlic bread), is extremely tasty. No cost is too great. It. Must. Be. OBTAINED. The real horror only settles in once the credits roll. You don't really piece together what's happening during the game, but that feeling of figuring everything out and having the world come together is amazing, The story really comes together about 3/4 of the way through, but doesn't really exist before that. Scanner Sombre is a great recommendation for those who want to try a horror game, without the risk of becoming too scared or stressed, but still want to feel some good horror.

Gameplay:
Creative and enjoyable gameplay, even if it stays somewhat stagnant throughout the game. (There is actually a reason that the gameplay is the way it is, though it spoils the story). The burst scan is really satisfying and fun to use. The geometry of the areas are very detailed, and they look gorgeous when you take the time to fill the surfaces. The game is a rather linear affair, and there are no hidden collectibles on the side as far as I am aware. Granted in game collectables would not work given the gameplay, so it's understandable why there are none.
I wouldn't recommend playing this game all in one sitting, but two or three sitting because you begin to feel cross eyed after a few hours. Also, since you are going to be scanning 90% of the time, the game might get a bit monotonous.
Sound design is impeccable. You feel like you are in scanner sombre. I do not think I have felt that immersed in a game since the metroid prime games + mario galaxy 1&2. The music is also great. It always fits the mood.

Biggest criticism:
It is one of those games that can only truly be played once. While you can replay it, it won't have the same impact as it did the first time. Exploring the cave for the first time and discovering its secrets is what makes the game truly memorable. But once it's been discovered, that's that. Then again, it is only 8 dollars, so I'd say it's worth it despite it's lack of replayablity.

I've not seen this mechanic before or after playing this game - it's a short experience, but I think it's worth the asking price.

This game is great for exploration and highlighting the areas you're exploring dot by dot is a genius mechanic. In other exploration games with scant few mechanics like this one, exploration can feel a bit less than interactive. The LIDAR mechanic gives you a healthy trickle of satisfaction and really makes you scout out the various areas.

Aesthetically, the game is gorgeous. This is no small feat for a game that literally has zero model textures for 99% of the playtime. Development was focused on all the areas that mattered. Sound design is really good - you can't see what you're walking on, but you can absolutely tell whether it's mud, stone, or water based on the sounds of your own footsteps. The various chirps and pinging of the scanner alongside the ambient noise of a cavern and footsteps is really immersive.

The story is pretty scarce and I honestly think that's a good thing - it's there, it works, and it doesn't get in the way at all.

I think you're more likely to enjoy this game if you treat it as a little exploration/cartography art piece with some small eerie atmospheric moments. This isn't really a horror game, and it's not really going to scare you. It is, however, an extremely unique experience that's worth 2-3 hours of your time.

Игрушка очень классная, а идея с лидар-хоррором вообще огонь, но над атмосферой можно было поработать чуть-чуть лучше, потому что при прохождении игры испуга или страха не было вообще, по большей части игру прошёл просто бродя и любуясь пещерами. (Момент с лодкой мой любимый в плане красоты), также жирный минус могу предоставить подаче монолога в игре... Текст буквально появляется в неожиданный момент и его очень легко пропустить. НО даже несмотря на минусы игрушка довольно отличная и своих денег стоит. :>

There's nothing this does that's particularly mindblowing, but if you're looking for a walking sim with a great aesthetic to it then this totally scratches the itch. Level design is very consistently engaging in its variety and the gimmick makes the whole game drip with atmosphere and texture. The attempt at a story felt very clunkily handled, but I don't think that's really the attraction here anyway.

This game is a truly unique experience.
I picked it up on a sale a while back and had it on my backlog for a while and can say that I wish I played it sooner. the lights that the scanner plotted were absolutely beautiful on the cave walls and especially on the water. the sound design was also top notch too. the sound of the water droplets, rocks falling underfoot, and creaking wood sound almost as if you are actually there. only issue I had was the one upgrade popup staying on screen which was fixed by reloading the level

A game with a unique concept - you start in total darkness and use your LIDAR scanner to navigate. Veteran gamers might spot the plot twist probably midway though and i won't be spoling it here.

Visually, it's uniquely well made - there's almost no graphics to speak of, but the details of the LIDAR capture are very detailed. There are no almost no puzzles to solve except at the end - though I won't really classify it as a puzzle.

The game is short, the environment and sound makes you a little edgy but there are technically no monsters/enemies. Give this a go on a slow day!

I would have loved to have some voiceover to add more flavor to the game, but I'm just nitpicking at this point.

Don't let my playtime fool you, a good chunk of it was when the game was paused due to an errand I had to run. The actual runtime of this game is 60 - 70 minutes, max. I bought this during the winter sale for $1.50 and I say the value is just not there for any price more than that. You can't really interact with the environment, and as novel as the game's method of exploration is, the whole game just isn't worth it. It feels more like a game from a single-person developer with a very limited budget, even though it was made by the same team as Prison Architect and DEFCON. There is no replay value, no voice acting (only a few lines of text, a paragraph's worth total for the entire game), no alternate exploration paths, and no other gameplay aspects other than the scanner as you move through the cave.

A very niche art house kind of game.

Zwar nur maximal 2 Stunden lang, aber ein sehr guter, sehr atmosphärischer Walking-Simulator mit leichten Mystery- und Horroranleihen (nein, nicht gruselig - das Spiel will einen nur in diese Richtung in die Irre führen).

Die Story selbst hat mir gefallen, einzig die Auflösung ganz am Ende hätte für mich gerne (von mir aus auch erst im New Game +) etwas positiver ausfallen können. So aber bleibt sie zumindest in Erinnerung.

Der kleine Gameplay-Twist, dass die Umgebung komplett schwarz ist (klar, man ist ja in einem Höhlensystem unterwegs) und erst durch den Einsatz des LIDAR-Scanners sichtbar gemacht werden muss, gefällt mir gut. Erinnert ein bisschen an "Unfinished Swan", da musste man die dort weiße Umgebung auch erst mal mit Farbe sichtbar machen. Lockert das Walking etwas auf.

Die Grafik ist zwar simpel, erfüllt durch die Spielmechanik aber voll ihren Zweck. Die Musik ist rar, wenn sie aber eingesetzt wird, passt sie hervorragend. Einziges wirkliches Manko: Eine Sprachausgabe gibt es leider nicht - nur ein paar Texteinblendungen dessen, was unser Spielercharakter eigentlich gerade sagt.

Fazit:
Hab's im Sale für 1,39 erwischt - ich finde, ein hervorragender Preis für dieses tolle kleine Spielchen. Das hier ist vielleicht etwas experimentell, aber dadurch mal was Anderes. Bedingungslose Empfehlung von mir!

A work of art
A game that keeps you in a state of limbo always slightly on edge moving from cavern to cavern. The simplicity of the Lidar system in contrast to the unsettling surroundings and ever expanding story hints creates an atmosphere that both keeps you moving and searching for more whilst also also hesitant for an upcoming jumpscare that i swore would be there.
All and all a game that shines truley with its story and somber audio.

Short but sweet, a creative core mechanic and world design. Definitely found myself pondering the game's narrative sometime after completion. It is ultimately a walking sim however, so mileage may vary.

A fun and original game. Not much of a developed story, but what is there is intriguing and makes you desire more. In a game like this I could see that as a positive. I haven't encountered this style of gameplay before, so that's another reason to give the thumb's up - it's something new. Overall it's a good game, 7/10.

イルミネーションやキラキラが好きな人にはおススメです。
某〇ズミーランドにあるようなアトラクションのシーンがとても綺麗でした。
ただ個別の音の調整が出来ないので急な爆音に注意です。
テキストが消えるのが早いので見逃し注意です。
ストーリーは割と悲しめでした。だけどそこがまた良かったです。

I actually really, truly enjoyed the game, and find it well worth the money. I kept thinking while playing that this type of game is what vr is really meant for, experiences that a flat monitor can't really showcase in nearly the same way.
If you watch the trailer and feel like you would enjoy the game?? Then yea, it's well worth the effort to buy it and play. THERE'S A DEMO BTW.
I'll admit that there isn't much of a story or plot to the game, more of a story narrative that you encounter at certain spots on the map, but i found the literal gameplay and ambiance of the game my driving focus and purpose.
You explore the cave system using the radar gun in the trailer, which you build the level out to your level of detail. It's actually very possible to walk through the entire game and only see like 15%? of the scenery around you? The more you scan, the more detail you uncover, the more the environment builds and establishes. The more effort YOU put in, the more of the LITERAL game reveals itself to you, if you're a lazy person and rush? You'll get a lazy game with little meaning.
SLIGHT SPOILER - Despite the trailer, there's no actual horror, not to spoil anything but to more encourage people on the fence to play it. It has creepy moments, there's spooky sounds and you completely and utterly alone in the entire system. But at no point does anything jump scare you, nothing chases you, at worst you see creepy images of ghosts in various poses. It's a solid, hard hitting thriller.
My actual gameplay was spent basically like a scientist, 3d scanning the area like i was an archeologist that uncovered an undiscovered ancient humanity cave system. I took my time, built out the caves in pretty through detail, and (((you're given various tools that make your scanner way more capable and easier to use, including a map))) used the map to look back on my progress. This is actually a really cool concept in this game, making the slower, detailed approach more rewarding and worth it.
At no point did i feel the need to move a second faster than i wanted to, i actually broke the game play of 8hrs into 4 sessions and came back, continued on with no hesistation due to how the game plays out.

My advice...If the trailer interests you, just buy it. Play it slow, soak it in, explore. You actually get a return on your effort on gameplay experience with this game.

Ill be honest i didn't expect much going in. just the thought of navigating the darkness via lidar seemed interesting enough. However once again i am completely taken in by the less is more mantra. Suspense, dread, relief, sadness. wonderfully executed by such a small team. i give this game an 8 out of 10 as compaired to its peers here on the indie scene.

it was a very unique concept where you are in a dark cave system essentially echolocating with a laser. Its pretty neat and eerie the whole time, with the headset glitching and you seeing ghosts. Also there are times you have to go in water to cross an underground lake and the headset glitches. I didn't play it with VR, but you can and its very meta in that regard. I think it took maybe half that time to beat as I tend to multitask and not solidly game, but It was very engaging the time I was playing it.

You take a scenic route through a cave. But every light source is gone. The only thing you have is a scanner that points beams, measures the distance, and shows it to you on your vr headset in red (close) to blue (far) dots. You see a photo of your family and decide to return home.

This game's feature being the projected dots as the only way to "see" is why I love it so much. You can't take every sight in immediatly, but have to focus for some time to see the relief of everything arround you. It makes you wait and figure out what those dots together make.
This game has a story, a goal and an experience to give. Telling it through pop-up text and showing you only what you scan (enough). It has a horror element, but it's quiet casual experience. The dots just make you anxious for not seeing things immediatly. Their next game "The Voidness" has the scanning element too, but is more horror since an entity can follow you. You're safe here in Scanner Sombre.

Defenitly a recommendation to play since the experience of scanning your surroudings yourself to navigate is seldom seen. A light yes, but I could see the starting point from halfway through the game since a wall you haven't scanned is "invisible". I'm now wanting to get a scanner and do this IRL.
