It says it's a roguelike on the store page, but I missed that. I was expecting something more like an old fantasy MUD and I didn't enjoy my time with this game at all.
It did not grip me. I will admit that it has its charm and it is impressive how much can be achieved with ASCII, but it is a little too clunky for me to be enjoyable.

Thought i'd write a review since it feels like it's been forever since i've been playing on and off. I play in roguelike mode at max dificulty, so i haven't gotten very far in the game since i die. Just from the first zone, there is a nice variety of events and enemies. Multiple mechanics that you can do outside of combat and story events that influence somewhat in the npcs. Every time i play i discover something new, and that's how you know it's a good rpg.
Combat is intensely uninteresting, the attempts at humour are pitiable, the item system is mindless, and the plot is basically non-existent. It's about as interesting as an idle clicker. I can't be bothered to continue.

Un roguelike geniale e che sa dare dipendenza, nonostante il suo aspetto possa sembrare quello di una calcolatrice scientifica. Dietro a quello schermo nero pieno di caratteri ASCII si nasconde un gioco semplice e allo stesso tempo sfidante, incredibilmente bravo nel dare assuefazione con le sue brevi ma semplici interazioni, che riesce anche incredibilmente a essere "graficamente" appagante, segno della bravura di chi ha realizzato sapientemente interfaccia e "sprite".
Dal punto di vista ludico è un roguelike duro e crudo: muori? Rinasci con un altro eroe e ricomincia dal principio, ci penserà il cimitero dell'HUB centrale di gioco a ricordare tutti i tuoi eroi caduti. Bella anche la costruzione del personaggio, che tra equipaggiamenti e perk attivi e passivi, diventerà sempre più variegato e "complicato" da usare nelle centinaia e centinaia di battaglie che ci aspetteranno.
Un gioco da pause pranzo e che assolutamente da il meglio di se in portabilità.

For a cheap price it's ok for the hours you can get out of the loop if you like turn based combat and grinding. I was disappointed by the ending, and the story in general seems to try to hint at a plot and resolution that just isn't there, leaving you feeling like you're missing something.
The combat loop is engaging - you are kept paying attention by situational prompts to react to such as repositioning to avoid an enemy charge, foucsing to double combo count, or grappling to deal more damage (and conversely being penalized if you skip this one). The nice thing is depending on the state of the battle it can be a valid to choice to do a different move if you have another priority, so it's not entirely just "hit the same sequence of buttons and the prompt." Certain modifiers are more of a pain than others, but in general keeping a healthy hp pool, not letting your current MP climb to high (spend it frequently against threshers), and playing safe on healing helps with a lot. The devs could've also been more evil about loading backups, so I appreciate the ability to do so if you feel you got robbed, though make sure you save the backup files *before* you die as they get wiped. The combat options can seem overwhelming but aren't that bad to get used to, with the main 1-2-3-3 combo (you could also do 2-1-3-3 or 3-3 but it's rarely going to make or break a fight) doing most of the heavy lifting. Building a character with a plan is definitely necessary, but the various build guides on steam guides as well as from google generally work out well, and generally the idea is go for synergy.
Out of combat is more disappointing however. The game presents a bevy of options, many of which are of questionable utility. There is a hidden room that only gives 1 quest, NPCs never update their dialogue to match the current story point, and the Market and Temple seem largely pointless to name a few. Much of the player growth ends up coming from crafting, which is much more repetitive than combat and subject to RNG. The gear you craft is entirely randomized, and also much better than the available gear that drops with the sole exception of the blacksmith's premium weapons. I spent a frustrating amount of time repeatedly crafting the same general rotation to get a desired effect and substats. Finally, the game hints at a larger world and choices between certain NPC dialogues and the faction system, but having beaten the game once and gotten partway through a NG+ this has not paid off yet. The story beat about the Brotherhood and the Resistance never goes anywhere, the mysterious NPC is never explained, and ultimately faction is reduced to a 20 percent damage buff if you have a weapon with the correct tag.
Ultimately I still recommend, but get it cheap and expect a grindy, light rpg rather than a hardcore decision-making/resource management/mechanics game like the oldschool roguelikes (nethack/angborn/etc) or a deep narrative experience like jrpgs. Good for playing during travel downtime.
It's a little hard to describe the gameplay loop of this game, but it's a combo-heavy RPG with a lot of moving parts that seem more complex than they really are. Combat is mostly just observing moment to moment which mechanic you need to refresh or push (combo counter, barriers, mantras, mana expunge, adrenal smash, snares, guarding, poison, etc) and outside of combat you're mostly just grabbing all the free stuff that refreshes day to day. Fun and not too hard once you understand how things work, and the artstyle is truly one of a kind.

Decent RPG game with the ASCII style is interesting and fun to play with the story being okay and the combat is expected from this type of game. Overall, buy it if you want to experience something unique and retro.

За минимализмом скрываются удивительная глубина и поражающая самобытность. Игра невероятно умело орудует олдскульной атмосферой — настолько, что чувствуешь: в неё вложили душу.

The story starts with explaining the state of the world you live in, which shifts into the journey of the main character who is trying to go and slay the evil. The story is linear with a lot of exposition. You'll feel like reading a visual novel because of that, especially since the story is presented in a wall of text. That being said, I found that most of the story can be skipped for the same reason. The ending was also confusing with a lot of holes, which probably would have been addressed if the game had a second installment. The thing is, it has been 10 years, and it doesn't seem as if we're going to have it.

[i]SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition[/i] is a turn-based game at its core, where you can choose your class and modifier at the start of the game. As you progress, you'll also be able to choose skills that you can learn and allocate skill stats and mastery to make it more unique. However, you won't be able to reset your choice, so you need to restart the whole game if you made the wrong build and can't progress, whether it's from killing yourself or restarting it manually.
Dying means death, unless you are playing the easiest difficulty. However, a lot of deaths tend to come from RNG, be it from two consecutive random events that can reduce your health or unfair fights in the coliseum that give an opponent that is too strong for you to beat. For the latter one, there is an option to run away, but the chance isn't always 100%. Plus, there are also occasions where an enemy can reduce a chunk of your health at once, more so than their usual attack. I myself found that dying is just an annoyance in this game since everything seems to want to kill you from these unfair things, not your mistakes.

The game offers a lot of choices that you can make. You'll be able to explore the main story, buy some weapons, manage a bar, participate in the coliseum, and tons of other things, but sadly, they are too monotonous. You'll find yourself typing the same thing over and over to repeat the same actions, especially since you always need to grind at some point to progress with the game. Enemies in the coliseum will be stronger and can kill you compared to the enemies in the main story, but it's the only way you have to get better gear and grind levels more efficiently.

The combat is similar to other turn-based games, except that you need to type your input rather than pressing a button to select an option. You can do a combo to increase your finisher's damage, use some skills to deal damage, or heal. Skills have certain restrictions before they can become effective, so you'll rely on your combo and finisher most of the time. The combo can be broken if you heal midway though, so you need to formulate a strategy to fight efficiently. Sometimes, an enemy will try to defend or attempt a big attack, and you need to respond by moving away from your spot. Doing the same thing too many times will also break your combo, although sometimes, you'll be able to do a follow-up to deal higher damage. Balancing between the options that you choose and the random prompt is necessary to win the battle.
Enemies have different affixes. Some will have higher health, some will be able to bleed you more frequently, and many more. Some enemies will even have more than one affix, which might change your strategy in battle. There are only a few that will force you to do that, though, as the basics are usually the same. Bosses don't have affixes, but they are usually stronger than normal enemies and have their own perks. Just imagine them as if they have a hidden affix and it'll fit right in.

I finished the game in 16.6h. I died once in the normal difficulty, then restarted the game in the easiest difficulty to finish the game. It has three difficulties in total, and a higher difficulty will unlock after you finish the game, along with a new game+ option that will reset you to the beginning with everything intact.
The game can be easy or hard depending on your build. I almost didn't manage to beat the last boss; it took me a lot of equipment changes and luck since my build wasn't up to standard.

Despite the unique concept, all I could remember when playing [i]SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition[/i] was just its grind. Doing battles for who knows how long, with the same tactics and strategy—it tires me out. Moreover, the permanent death seems to just give an excuse for the cheap deaths that the game has. This might be obvious, but I couldn't recommend the game.
I have been playing this on and off for years and I still know there is a crazy amount of stuff to experiment with and uncover. The art and sound design are very cool as well.
Wonderful game. Clever combat system where you chain attacks together to make combos, balanced with repositioning and charging an attack meter. Great depth of gameplay in other areas too. Easy to play for short or long periods. Very hard to master.
It took me about 8 years to get around to trying this and it's not bad. I like it because I'm old and I played games like this when they were cutting edge.
The music is from around 1992, it sounds a lot like SoundBlaster music. The gameplay loop is from around 1983. The ASCII art is very good.
Most of the humor is just dumb, honestly. Game dev humor is never as funny as they seem to think it is.
It's not like your normal roguelike, Don't expect this to be like ToME or ADOM. it's like a text adventure where you move from one encounter to the next and you've got a 'base' where you can sort of pick from different things to do.
On balance, it's alright. It's got good atmosphere if you're into the retro aesthetic. It's very shallow strategically and there are probably more engaging games that you can play, but it's OK. You won't be unhappy with it.
Is it worth $8 at this point given that it's like 10 years old and not all that deep? Probably not. I'd get it on sale. Though I mean it's only $8, if you're not hurting too much for money. It's not an enthusiastic recommend here, but it's a solid recommend.
It is honestly a neat idea, but I can't enjoy a text/ascii game for any length of time.

SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition (SB) was one of the earlier games released for Humble Bundle monthly. It was quite unlike any other RPG I had played, and so when I first tried it, its unique style caught me off guard, so I decided to leave it be. Fast forward several years, and not only did I give it another try, I also let another large span of time pass after my last time playing it. This time though, trying to record a Let's Play is what threw a big monkey wrench into my experience. Either way, I've left this title alone for far too long, and needed to finish matters.
[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
Although SB looks different from any other RPG you're likely to play, by and large it still functions the way you'd expect. You'll acquire information by speaking with NPCs, obtain better equipment, find treasure, fight tough bosses, etc. Also included is a crafting system, where different grades of raw materials can be used to make equipment. I honestly found it kind of confusing how to manipulate the process so you'd create quality items more consistently instead of fouling them up, but that's kind of how the game is designed overall. For example, understanding the stats and character classes in order to develop a capable hero isn't as straightforward as I'd hope.
Aside from its appearance, a big difference between this and other RPGs comes from its battles, as it has a strong emphasis on building combos, and setting up your next move strategically in order to trigger a handful of effects. At any time you'll have a list of possible moves you can make, and after picking the first attack, this brings up new options. Enemies won't be sitting idly by as you make those choices though, and you'll be hit with various ailments if you don't properly counter their attacks. Sometimes, you'll have to disrupt a combo you were building up in order to protect yourself from being hit by a devastating move, but other times it'll work out so you can pull off a strong finisher. It looks complicated with all the variables to consider, but after getting used to it, your choices become second nature. Often enough, there's a move you simply can't afford to be hit by, so your theoretical options actually narrows down to only one sensible choice.
[h1]Controls[/h1]
Since the game is comprised of keyboard symbols, it seems only reasonable that a keyboard would be used to play it. All of the menus will be navigated using a number or letter selection system, with a list of options off to the corner. This goes for both combat and exploring the world at large. As long as you stay focused, you shouldn't have any problems, and can benefit from hidden secrets if you're especially attentive.
[h1]Story[/h1]
Following a story-line fitting for a medieval fantasy world, there's a mighty sword hidden and plunged inside a stone, for its so powerful that it alone is a threat to all mortal beings. Hell bent on acquiring it, The Matron sought it until she was finally able to claim it for her own. A mighty wizard was able to hold her back temporarily, but even he succumbed to this force, and the world is once again under threat of being destroyed by The Matron. Your primary goal is to stop her by any means necessary. It's a straightforward enough goal and obstacle, though with the game tossing crumbs over what feels like long periods of time, plot progression comes out at a trickle.
[h1]Visuals[/h1]
This is the most striking aspect of SB, as it uses keyboard symbols as the basis for all the game's visuals, which is called ASCII art. When I saw that in the game's description, I thought it was a really old computer model or operating system I knew nothing about. Either way, in spite of being a very simple style, it's rather striking, and isn't something that comes up all that often. With a bit of imagination, each item, NPC, and monster has the rough semblance of what its striving to represent, which is all a game really has to do in theory. Compared to other minimalistic styles, I find this much more compelling than a title that merely makes use of geometric shapes for every character and enemy.
[h1]Sound Design[/h1]
Based on how the game looks, it wasn't too surprising that the track was built from chip tunes. It sounds more refined than old-school beeps and boops, but it still makes use of simple sound effects in order to compose the numerous songs from the game. From the different moods and styles comprising the RPG, you wouldn't think the composer had many limitations, because it's truly a great OST. Although there's a large number of songs throughout the game, with some lasting around four or five minutes, many of them are on the shorter side. This lends itself to the tunes looping fairly quick, so if you aren't more efficient with your playing style, they might get repetitive. Also, depending on how you handle certain tones or pitches, some notes or sound effects could be irritating to listen to.

❌ I understand how some people want every battle in an RPG to be meaningful, where you can't just mindlessly mash a button to get through it. However, if that's going to be the case, than I'd argue that you can't also put in monotonous grinding. How many battles you have to fight should be reduced to compensate for the higher level of effort, but this game has a lot of repetitive fighting in it.
❌ The game's sense of humor reminds me of what my friends and I would have done when we were teenagers. We'd make up a joke or reference to something, find it hilarious, and bring it up in all sorts of situations. That seems to be the case for this game and potatoes. “Hey guys, I just thought of something. Potato... salad!” “Hahahaha! Good one!”
❌ If you don't design your character in an optimal way, you'll struggle throughout the game. It's rather unforgiving.

🔍 I'd recommend playing on the easier difficulty that doesn't include perma-death, as it's really easy to make a mistake during a crucial fight and have the enemy turn it around on you.
🔍 Look up a character guide so you have a well-designed warrior to play as. Otherwise, you'll be facing many uphill battles.
[h1]Final Thoughts[/h1]
My greatest annoyance with SB is that the enemy controls the flow of battle. In order to address the various statuses and powerful attacks they charge up, you have to respond in very specific ways, lest they start bulldozing you. When you get used to it, fights can go fairly fast, as it tends to follow set patterns, but you still follow where they lead you. Battles present a guise that you have several options at any given moment, yet since you can't be too reckless with your resources, there's far less viable choices than you might expect. What convinced me that I didn't like this system is when I stopped hamming things up for my now deleted recordings, and I realized how unengaged I was with the game. It's really not that interesting, even though I want to love it for having a unique style. However, gameplay rules over everything else, and since it fell flat for me, I can't recommend it.

It's been exactly one decade as of writing this review when this game released.. Time flies so fast.. And even in 2025 it's still hella fun. It would be real neat if the devs just added some more content for this game or hell, even a sequel. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I really need to spend more time with this game, because it's absolutely amazing. An RPG where all the pictures are created using ASCII Art, but it's more of the viewpoint of a dungeon-delver, not a traditional tile-based roguelike. It's a really impressive feat that makes for shockingly beautiful environments and scenes, and it's very fun.

[b]Sanctuary RPG: Black Edition[/b] had me excited for some good ol’ retro RPG goodness, but instead, I found myself stuck in a crafting simulator disguised as an adventure. The game wants you to dive into intense battles, but here’s the catch: the real way to win is by tapping through endless menus and crafting gear like you're running a medieval Etsy shop. And let me tell you, the crafting? Tedious doesn’t even begin to cover it. After a while, it felt like the only monster I was slaying was my own patience.
The game’s attempt to blend in roguelike elements feels out of place, often leading to battles that are ridiculously difficult, even when I was overleveled by as much as 15 levels. This game is not what you think it is. It's not some deep roguelike with the quirky text interface. It's a pure skinner box in a form of a repetitive game where all the game mechanics are just a flavour to keep you engaged over doing the same tasks over and over. It has the same addictive taste of games like Loop Hero, where you get swallowed over the game but you are aware of the fact the game isn't funny. However, when on discount the game price is extremely low (i've paid it less than 1 euro) and, well, if you want to waste time and feel horrible about it, this game might be for you.
Juvenile, unfunny "humour". Gameplay manages to be at the same time complicated and boring.
If you like repeatedly typing 1, 2, 3, 4 on your keyboard, and if you think the mere mention of potatoes is hilarious, then play this game. Otherwise, don't.

I'm sure this game was funny in 2014, but now the humor is bland and boring. Randomized outcomes for silly events is actually quite boring, there's no actual humor.
The game encourages you not to go into autopilot not by being engaging, but by trying to get you to watch for green letters on the screen, though most fights can be autopiloted through.
It says it is verified on the steam deck, and I suspect that it was cheated onto the steam deck, it doesn't work on the steam deck.
Finally, there's no 'wrong input' stop. If you accidentally put in a wrong input, it skips your turn.

спустя несколько лет игры на пиратке в конце концов решил хоть как-то углубиться в это ваше убежище. с момента покупки смертей двадцать, наверное. в общем и целом их было в районе сотни, полагаю. самое главное по советам - репозиция снимает раскрытие (плюс под это cloaking и убийцы тема), лега может появиться в любой момент, формируй сет так чтобы на каждом предмете один из поднимаемых параметров был виталкой, не бойся убегать если ты прям конкретно на грани (на ранкеде не забывайте об этом никогда), на g вызывается мехатипок который может в моменте вывезти ситуацию, чекайте приписки к оружию (на основе этого допсовет - если видно что приписка говёная не берите прикол даже если в миллион раз сильнее оружие, со временем будет лучше) и не забывайте про общее поглощение урона и всё такое прочее. думаю добить типов после матроны. не дай бог после них ещё какая-то байда будет я расцелую создателей в щёчки.

One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

Pros:
1. This is probably one of the funnier games out there.
2. ASCII graphics are solid and the art is amazing.
3. Music fits the game perfect and goes really well with the art and flow of the game.
4. Combat is actually challenging and good your first time playing through the game.
5. The world you can explore seems to be pretty big from what I've seen.
6. This game goes on sale for really cheap which is great.
7. Potatoes.
Cons:
1. The game feels a bit simplistic to the point it adds to difficulty especially not having a place to store old gear that might be better for certain cases.
2. The games combat after your first time playing or once you understand it better is a little broken. I'm not going to spoil that in this review but if you figure it out you'll know what I mean. It's not game breaking since you can ignore some of the odd things you can do but it's there. It basically becomes far less of a challenge. You'll notice things get even worse when you find out what works with each class best... you poor soul.
3. It's a short game so don't expect to put over 20 hours into it really. I'd say most people get about 8-12 hours out of this game. Though if you're unlucky or just don't learn the combat I could see someone getting closer to 20 hours from this game I guess.
4. There's basically minimal replayability once you understand the combat since it's so simple and all the same.
5. Potatoes
TLDR - The game is good for the price and even better on sale just don't expect to get much replayability out of it. The combat is fun the first playthrough but can get old once you figure it out. The art is great the music is great and it's worth grabbing when on sale for sure. If it's not on sale it's still not a bad deal but it goes on sale regularly for $0.79.

Very Underrated, if you like a good Rougelike, this is a treat. It's definitely the text based part of the game that makes is different but it adds to the experience, one of the best Rougelike games I have ever played if not the best. There is a retro feel and deep gameplay system, if you are thinking of picking up this game, give it a shot.

An extraordinary achievement in game development and immersive storytelling. I have played for countless hours outside Steam but recently rediscovered the game here. Fantastic combat, very interesting mechanics, and a satisfying sense of progression. There's even a crafting system that will have you trying to keep the forge from overheating as you work on creating powerful objects. It's the kind of game you'll enjoy becoming more knowledgeable about as you play. I wish there were more games like this one, but I've yet to find anything that scratches the same itch.
If you are an old fart like me and started gaming before fancy graphics and want a trip down memory lane then I highly suggest this game.
If you are a young fart and think old ♥♥♥♥ is cool then I highly suggest this game.
The humor is kind of crude, the game is simple to start and more complicated as you get into it, but over all I am drawn into it and enjoy my time with it.

I was pretty into this for a a little bit and tried to get back into it but it suddenly doesn't work. It just glitches, shows its running on my task bar but wont be brought up when clicking on it. As that makes it unplayable, I cant recommend the game. You could always try it yourself and get a refund if your under an hour of play.

Wonderful little game. Writing this review to encourage anyone to play it who loves RPG's. For some reason tho, Steam isn't showing the hours I spent on this game. Developer is great too. Check it out.
Je dirais que j'apprécie ce jeu à hauteur de 60 %. Donc un peu plus de positif que de négatif.
Jeu simple aux "graphismes" textuels qui peut tourner sur n'importe quel ordinateur. Puis l'humour est bien et très présent. Le côté très RPG me rappelle bien l'esprit jeu de rôle étant moi-même MJ dans les JDR sur table.
Et heureusement qu'il y a un mode "softcore" pour pouvoir tester des builds et des classes et j'ai terminé une fois le jeu en mode "classic" mais le NG+ mode inferno m'a révélé un élément injuste et inéquitable qui plombe bien un jeu roguelike... Je ne lance plus qu'en mode "softcore". Et pour les nouveaux joueurs dans le but de débloquer toutes les races, mieux vaut terminer d'abord une fois en "softcore".
Il y a 3 éléments inéquitables qui bousille un peu l'utilisation d'autres modes et en particulier le mode "lunatic" ou l'on peut mourir définitivement pour aucune raison.
1/ D'abord il y a une chance que l'ennemi ignore tout simplement la mitigation de dégâts (ou alors juste certains bosses ?) même si la chance est très basse (> 1 % peut-être ?)*. En plus d'avoir les classes qui ne sont pas équilibrées et le barbare/Barbarian surclasse les autres. Le mage/Wizard qui survit par la mitigation active avec la barrière est inenvisageable à cause de ça (et heureusement que je joue en "softcore" car déjà mort 2 fois par cet oubli de réduction de dégâts avec 2 attaques normales critiques pourtant avec une barrière au max lvl 6 = -82 % de dégâts). Et l'esquive est aléatoire, j'ai perdu une assassine lvl 120 car j'ai reçu 2 attaques critiques de suite... (Esquive à 86 % : 54 % * 150 % + race à +5 % et blocage à 35 % avec un "greater shield" et "passive skill" à 18 % ; mitigation de 53 % seulement)
2/ Les point des compétences / "Passive skills" obtenus dans l'arène avec le "matchmaking" ne sont obtenable qu'une fois par un perso. Une fois un personnage grand maître/"grand master", c'est fini, ça ne sert plus à rien de le faire avec un nouveau personnage. Vraiment ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ surtout pour un roguelite...
3/ Le crafting est un non-sens pur. C'est juste créer une armure ou un charme aléatoirement. Dans tout RPG ou jeu papier, le loot/drop est logiquement aléatoire mais le craft, le PJ a une idée de quoi faire... Je ne sais pas, au moins en atteignant un niveau de compétence (Skill 100, 150 voire 200 ? à la limite comme restriction), on devrait pour choisir le type d'armure et les stats à avoir (double stats impossible mais choisir Stat 1 et Stat 2). Et aussi choisir l'enchantement. Car le "skill" débloque juste des fonctions lors du craft globalement inutiles car trop aléatoire sur la qualité, juste le dernier à la limite comme finition du travail. Ou à la limite encore une restriction comme ne pas avoir d'enchantement (ou juste "lesser", "normal" ou "greater") en choisissant les stats et le type d'armure. Car c'est juste saoulant d'avoir une probabilité pour le charme de 1/20 et pour l'armure de 1/60 (Stat 1 = 1/5 ; Stat 2 = 1/4 ; et armure "heavy/medium/light" = 3 types) ainsi qu'un enchantement "intéressant" (Proba divisée par 20 encore, non ?). Puis la qualité n'augmente pas la valeur des stats mais seulement augmente le hasard et la fourche de valeur extrême (ce n'est plus une fourchette à ce niveau : comme une qualité de 700 sur une armure de 745 de VIT et 35 de WIS au niveau 130...). Car crafter 100 armures pour finir avec une armure 'meh' "normale" à 500 de VIT et 300 de INT ET lourde pour un barbare au niveau 120... Pff, je finis juste à la probabilité de 1/15 avec le bon type d'armure et VIT (Vitalité) pour une des 2 stats et encore pas assuré d'avoir une VIT élevée... Je vois des sites avec des builts basés sur une combinaison d'enchantements... Mais non, en fait ! Une idée pour du modding du système de craft, non ? A améliorer, une nécessité.
*Sauf qu'arriver dans le mode "Inferno", les ennemis ont parfois une valeur d'attaque immense. ATK entre 20 % et 60 % des HP (Hit Points) du joueur. La partie "classic" avec un barbare où j'ai atteint le mode "inferno" et le niveau 181 avec 73000 HP, j'ai eu une chance très basse pour la quête des "WULF's essence" car le dernier super boss Turncoat n'est arrivé une deuxième fois qu'à partir de l'acte 2 (La première rencontre dans l'acte 4, il avait l'affixe <GICANTIC+> donc fuite directe). Il a sa puissance basée sur le niveau du joueur (scaling) et en plus il avait le boost de l'inferno. J'avais maxé ma mitigation de dégâts. Donc je ne prenais que 16,86 % de dégâts (Armure lourde au max à 75 %, Turtle garb lvl 20 à 29 % de réduction de dégâts et "deflecting shield" à 5 % de réduction). Je jouais en mode 5 de l'église et les ennemis avaient en moyenne 15000 en attaque (ATK 10000 - 20000). Mais avec la mitigation, je ne prenais que 2500 de dégâts en moyenne et ma régénération par attaque dépassait cela. Certains bosses montaient à 50000 ou 60000 en moyenne en ATK. Dans ce cas là, j'activais ma barrière lvl 2 (je monte toujours la sagesse/WIS à 100 pour avoir 20 en régénération de mana pour pouvoir spammer le "3" ou faire la barrière dans les cas risqués) où je ne prenais alors que 9,2744 % (et donc pour 50000, ça passe à un peu en-dessous de 5000 qui est absorbé par mes attaques). Bien sûr je fuyais face au affixes mortels comme GIGANTIC et son plus (Une partie précédente, j'ai été OS par un ennemi ayant <GIGANTIC> et <GIGANTIC+> !!) Le Turncoat avait juste l'affixe INSIDIOUS+ et démarrait avec une attaque entre 8000 et 16000 mais il avait la terrible quantité de HP de plus de 32 millions !!
Le combat a duré une centaine de tours où il lui restait moins de 3 millions de HP, alors presque mort, moins de 10 tours, 5 peut-être ? (Mon attaque avait bien augmentée, environ à plus de 300 % avec les capacités passives). Son attaque est arrivée entre 45000 et 90000. J'encaissais bien même les critiques grâce à la barrière lvl 2 (moyenne de 8300 et 16600 pour le critique) et blocage à 45 % (bouclier à 30 % et maraudeur avec 10 % de blocage et +5 % lors d'attaque). Eh bien un moment, il a juste fait une attaque normale à 60000 de dégâts qui m'a tué (j'avais 53000 HP après une charge critique suivie d'un MEGA-PLUMMETED critique aussi). Et la réduction de dégâts ? Pour une mort permanente, c'est du ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
P.S : Recommandation avec des pincettes. Et petit conseil pour les nouveaux joueurs, mettez 100 points de stats dans WIS pour une classe non magique comme le barbare afin d'avoir une régénération de mana qui couvre des soins successifs ou spammer 3 et pouvoir utiliser fréquemment la riposte.
Et aussi, pour les classes sans DEX/dextérité, il faut avoir une pièce d'équipement avec de la dextérité comme l'arme ou le bouclier (sans craft, leur valeur restent plus basse mais au niveau 90, un bon 200 DEX est possible). Cela donne du critique (proche de 50 % et presque toutes les classes ont des effets avec, aussi je n'utilise jamais les armes contondantes comme "Mace"), un peu d'esquive ET SURTOUT de la fuite à plus de 60 % ce qui est vital dans ce jeu où les affixes de monstre peuvent condamner les perso (<GIGANTIC> pour tous, <SILENCER> pour le wizard et paladin, <FOCUSED> pour le ranger et l'assassin, certaines combinaisons de 2 et 3 affixes, etc.). Il faut fuir et même contre les bosses, ça marche. Moi, je me suis repris à plusieurs fois contre "The Matron", pire mur du jeu où il faut une capacité de dégâts suffisante sinon, ça finit condamné avec "heal" qui régénère moins de 10 % des HP max...

17小时游侠角色过了经典模式，永久死亡的那种（游戏中也有软核模式），要是中道崩殂了，肯定就是不推荐了 。
游戏讲述的主角干掉兄弟会对头护士长（还是主母？）的故事，在主角经历漫长的战斗中，了解到护士长也并非单纯的恶人，兄弟会也不是什么好东西，核心思想就是世道不是非黑即白。
但是我在游戏里明明不是兄弟会成员，而是满声望的反抗者，仍然没有其它结局可选。
整个游戏就是打怪、讲故事、提升等级和装备。游戏的机制很多，但是并不复杂。我的游侠角色主打combo叠伤，副带标记流血；属性点主强壮、敏捷和体质，副精神，不点智慧；技能点主护甲副攻击，武器专精弓弩（点护甲副带格挡，但是弓弩不能格挡，目的主要是要护甲值防暴毙，其实剑与匕首更适合这种加点法）。中间几次进程人物增强选的都是关于标记、流血和生存的。
人物提升最重要的是装备，好的装备对于属性提升巨大，升级人物到100级能有400点属性点，一件好的打造装备在100级时期可以带来600+点属性值，游戏中护甲和饰品可以打造，武器可以在铁匠铺买，武器和护盾可以在营地合成，游戏中随机掉落物包括所有种类装备和商店物品。除了武器关注攻击力和阵营，其余三个装备都看属性点。
游戏最让人不满的应该就是装备系统，装备要关注的点太多。武器要关注种类、阵营、攻击力、属性点、词条，护盾要关注重量、格挡率（弓弩不能格挡）、属性点、词条，装甲要关注重量、防御值、属性点、词条，配饰要关注防御值、属性点、词条。至于稀有度，无伤大雅。
这么多需要关注的点，导致好的装备极其稀有，大部分装备都用不了，因为属性点太低或角色不需要（智慧），能凑合用的凤毛麟角，真正适合角色的基本不要想了。游戏宣传的武器丰富（“Wreck your enemies with over 1400 weapons and armors”），其实除了图像不同，同种武器之间并无差异。
更让我不满的是游戏可能存在隐藏机制，尤其在boss战时，我的加点几乎完美，武器装备领先掉落物平均水平一大截，越十级杀怪轻松简单，闭眼按1234R就能过，遇到精英也只是要多出几招，我34000+血上限，怪一下能打我300-1000，按4heal一次回17000点血。加上我有65%以上的闪避率。
但是打boss每次都能差点给我杀了。明面上boss（护士长和残余六守卫）的血量极厚，攻击可能在第三阶段翻四倍（3000），拥有降低一半血量的诅咒术，二阶段免疫所有负面效果，三阶段将主角锁定为流血状态。暗面下主角每次攻击感觉85%以上概率会被叠上6层流血，主角更难拉开和boss的距离，boss攻击极难闪避，主角回血的量被削减。
这点隐藏机制几乎把我的角色克死了，我开始是往流血、标记方向靠的，选了敌人流血层数翻倍和标记概率眩晕33%和震慑33%（中断蓄力和终结），打所有boss外的怪都几乎控到死或全闪避。结果中间的boss就有完全抵抗负面的，我就预感最终boss也抵抗负面，于是转向依靠combo叠伤，游侠4次combo有一次500%ATK的终结技，前3次伤害加起来有400%ATK。终极技能起始650%ATK，每次连击加100%ATK（天赋强化后），cd大概是5次攻击。然而打boss每下给我叠6层流血（每层一回合扣当前血量1%），我三次连击时被叠到18层，一回合扣的比18%多的多，至少30%当前血量，不回血疗伤就等被秒。所以根本打不出combo，只能刷cd用650%ATK终结极。
最恶心人的是我刚开始走流血的时候，我给普通怪上了60层流血，它一回合连血皮都不带掉的，这纯属SB游戏。
It's a well made game, but I don't have the patience to figure out and memorize it's various systems. It's just not my cup of tea.
the ascii is nice, and pleasant to look at, and the music is pretty good too.
the humour and writing can be a bit crude, but is otherwise okay.
however, the gameplay loop gets repetitive too quickly for the length of the game, with fairly little to discover beyond that.
the balancing is also really strange, for example:
-the druid class gets a permanent damage penalty [b]unless[/b] they're exposed; while the assassin class, on the otherhand, receives a permanent damage buff for not being exposed. which feels... strange.
the assassin does bonus damage for existing without a certain status effect, while the druid needs to be exposed to even deal their normal damage.
the wizard class loses 1% of their total max hp on each level up, (stat boosts included,) for no benefit.
-areas are labelled by recommended level, but the enemies scale their stats up anyways.
(on lunatic difficulty, as it was my most recent ones,) the very first area has enemies that deal anywhere from 100-200 displayed damage, which is manageable. the level recommendation of 0-5 makes sense, since you can't go anywhere else yet, anyways.
however, after beating the terminal, revisiting this area consistently had enemies ranging from 500-1500 (about 1000 average,) displayed attack, which is a massive jump up in threat for an already visited area, not to mention the chance for an ambush attack with attacks that deal ~90% of a health bar at that point.
on longer playthroughs, enemies can also start taking ages to defeat, so battles can start to drag on for a while, and repetitiveness will set in.
-unclear/inconsistent damage, and statuses affecting you the same turn they're inflicted.
your displayed attack can often be wildly different from the actual damage it says you deal. sometimes modifiers are included in the displayed total, sometimes they are not.
additionally, sometimes you take damage, suddenly lose mp or even perform a wounded reposition, despite having no wound status when reposition was used.
there's a lack of clarity in the battle screen for a lot of these instances. sometimes you want to use a finisher, or use a heal for 20 mp, and have just barely enough to do so, but then it might say that you have "insufficient mp" for the ability, wasting the turn, with no message telling you what did so.
-some aspects of the game can feel like more effort/time than it's worth for the reward.
quests have no variance. you'll ask for a quest, they'll ask for one specific item, and you'll get it randomly while trying to explore an area. you can then go back to them, recieve a reward, and then ask for the same quest again. not exactly rich in variety, and fairly time consuming, as the animations for item drops and walking from place to place are unskippable. (especially notable in crafting kits, as you can transmute all of your scrap metal into different items... if you feel like waiting ~10 seconds per each pair of scrap metal in your inventory.)
-classes, don't feel distinct enough.
there's almost no unique abilities or powers, they're pretty much all just passive benefits with a semi-unique ability (shared between two classes each,) replacing riposte at low health.
-there's a method to get infinite exp with no risk.
time consuming, and boring, but it exists, and as such, is a way to avoid engaging with the game entirely.
-also, enemies with the "swift" modifier feel horrendous to fight, and are mandatory. (help)
additionally, despite immersion being stated on the store page, it's often little more than some shattered glass on the floor; it'll make some noise and remind you it's there, before it gets smashed some more.
the roguelike nature of it is questionable, as a majority of features are debatably fairly normal rpg things, but, it's kind of like a halfway point for both, and doesn't commit to either. there's unlockable origins and augments, but that's about it. as mentioned, all the classes share the same attacks and abilities with slightly different modifiers/effects, and three choices later on, two unique to the class, but one of which is just a tiny stat change. weapons and equipment have a fair number of modifiers, but, a lot of them are not particularly useful. i feel like it might feel a bit better if it committed to one or the other more.
not to mention, the augments are absurdly rare. in the 34 hours played, i've only had one of them drop.
the game is very flawed, but, overall, it's just okay. the soundtrack is pretty good, as mentioned.
it does go on sale fairly often, and quite significantly so. my feelings overall however, are mixed, as it could be absolutely fantastic; but it unfortunately misses pretty hard in crucial spots, and i don't really feel like i can really recommend it.
the "other" option for gender in the character creation is nice, though!
SanctuaryRPG is a neat idea, but it falls down some in the execution. (NOTE: I accidentally left this up in the background for a few days so my playtime is inflated. I still put some good time into it, but nothing like 140 hours.)
In the first place, it's far too linear for a permadeath roguelike. I die the first time, "okay fine, I've learned some things," go back. Cruise through the game for a while then hit a sudden difficulty spike and die. "Well, ♥♥♥♥. I guess I should grind more before moving on to the next stage." Play again. There's one moment early on where you're given a seemingly plot-relevant choice. I made a different choice this time. Everything played out effectively the same.
Then the repetition really sets in. There's no new randomly generated map to explore. There's no map at all, just your current objective, previous objectives (other than the first one in a new Act) to go back and grind more, and various town interfaces. The monsters are pretty interchangeable. Some have distinct traits but they rarely change that much about what you do once you really get the combat down. You get different random equipment but unlike e.g. FTL where building around missiles vs. beam weapons vs. teleporters etc. changes your playstyle, the different items in Sanctuary just change your numbers.
So getting back to where I was after dying was just a boring slog. Moving on from there was somewhat more enjoyable, but the grinding at each stage to make sure I didn't get difficulty spiked again added to the monotony. But the only alternative was just to just press on, likely die, and do the whole thing again. The game at one point gets preachy about "save scumming," but if I could just go back and grind when I knew I had to it would've taken a lot of the tedium out of the game.
I actually found the all-ASCII and even all-keyboard approach kind of neat. Part nostalgia and part just being different from other things out there I guess. The art was okay, but disappointing. I've seen much better ASCII art. I think they were hampered by their choice of chunky font. I'm assuming they went with the 40-character per line font from early PC days for the nostalgia effect ('Member CGA? 'Member Wasteland? I 'member!) but it's not great for drawing with.
So ... I know humor is subjective, but I'm still surprised so many reviewers liked it. There are a few good lines in there, but most of it relies on nonsense and completely fell flat for me. Here's a typical example: you pick the option to entertain patrons at your bar, and get "You strip naked and rub a potato over yourself. One of the patrons leaves." Lulz? The game seems to think if it repeats random things about potatoes often enough anything about potatoes becomes funny.
The most mystifying thing though is the praise for the story. There is *barely* a story there, and most of it doesn't make sense. There are a few NPCs to talk to, but their conversation trees are short and pointless. Eventually you learn a couple more scraps of information about them, but the conversation options stay the same, even though some of them don't make sense anymore. There are a couple times when the game makes you question whether you're doing the right thing. At this point I thought, "wait, why *am* I doing this anyway? I'm just following whatever's put into the [QUEST] line on the screen and come to think of it I don't even know where that's coming from. No one has even told me to do these things most of the time, it's just some disembodied voice telling me to do things. Plus! I'd better be doing the right thing, since the game sure as Hell isn't giving me the option to do anything else."
That's the closest thing to an interesting story I found in the game, and it mostly served to remind me that the game has no real motivation or background. I mean, I guess the intro said something about a threat to the world, but why am I following this path? I think maybe the PC is "the chosen one" or some such, but I legit can't remember and I watched the intro twice.
