oh man, what an underrated, incredibly niche gem of a game. i would recommend it to anyone interested in napoleonic history and fantasy, especially if they're a reader. friend and i (their review is somewhere around here...) played this together and it was a blast.

Excellent first instalment in a series of great books. Chances are, if you pick this up and you don't have any other games like the ChoiceofGames omnibus as I do, it'll be quite a rare gem in your games library.
The setting is fantastic and I believe it has something for everyone. As for the game itself, it's long enough to convince you this is a real setting and not just a random, cringe fanfic, whilst leaving itself just short with an appropriate cliffhanger to leave you wanting more. At a steady pace, one playthrough may take you about four hours.
It requires a fair bit of imagination to operate, just like reading any other book, but it makes for a refreshing change of pace. Incredible value for money and time.

My first playthrough was a blind one and I had no idea about the stats driving these changes, meaning I was a bit gutted when I reached the final chapter and discovered I could not survive the great battle and could only die in it (albeit as a hero). However, that didn't put me off from a replay. Second go round, I consulted a few guides so that I could roleplay a bit more tactically and make it to the end alive (so I can play the next one!) and whilst at first I worried that this would ruin it for me, it was still just as absorbing.
Writing quality is fairly decent (never approaches anything like Disco Elysium) with some fruity descriptions of violence. P.W knows his stuff too and is very good at weaving in information about the business of soldiering and war in the gunpowder era which elevates the experience.

Paul Wang, the man that you are! For the uninitiated, [i]Sabres of Infinity[/i] is known as one of the crowning jewels in Hosted Games—and for damn good reason. The [i]Infinity[/i] series is one of the first series I've read, way back when I was getting into interactive fiction. I was worried my love for the books was just nostalgia, but I'm so glad to declare it stands on its own two feet as a fantastic game and narrative. I can't say enough good things about it.

[*] Vision. The author has a clear vision: the setting is so otherworldly it takes discipline to commit to it, I think. You play as a male soldier in the King's army in a world much like ours—except there's magic, or "Bane." Having magic makes you noble enough to be "Baneblooded," with all the privileges nobility entails. The social hierarchy surrounding Baneblooded nobility isn’t just flavor text or the author's power fantasy. Having such a narrow role shapes every interaction, every insult, every moment of privilege and danger. Usually, most IF games have diverse options: you can play as any gender or sexuality. But in [i]Sabres[/i], you're locked to being a young, presumably heterosexual male. Still, even as a young woman playing the game, I never felt excluded. Instead, it highlighted how differently power functions when embedded in culture rather than offered as a toggle in character creation. With the care the author puts into his work, having a female soldier would be a radically different experience and would probably double the work. Yet, even from a male standpoint, the author manages to examine class and gender in a medieval-ish world.
[*] Writing and pacing. Man. I can't say enough good things about the writing. I would call it "detailed" and "clear" overall. Wang lets the narrative breathe instead of ushering the player onto the next scene. There's paragraphs upon paragraphs of pure detail: how sludge in the winter melts into spring, how thousands of soldiers square off in a field, the screams and gunshots of battle. The writing is so vivid it really lives up to the whole "power of your imagination" thing. I was literally picturing myself as a male soldier, even though I am most definitely not either of those things. No typos or grammatical errors either.
[*] Choices matter. After taking a peek into the code and finishing two playthroughs, YES, I can tell you your choices actually matter. What you choose as a parting gift from your family will show up years later. What you choose as your top skills correlates to your success as an officer, but strategy is also needed to build on your strengths. Your attitude toward your fellow soldiers will come back years down the line. You'll have to think through each choice like you were an actual officer. And every little choice matters as well!
[*] Depth AND breadth. The branching on the story is insane. For example, in one of the later chapters, you'll have the option to attack an enemy fort. You can choose to lead the attack or set up an ambush. Each options has three (or more) outcomes. You can die, win convincingly, or win convincingly. Let alone the fact that you decide how to react to your companions, if you want to be merciful or bloodthirsty, etc. Each chapter has an incredible amount of content, not just the climax!
[*] Length. Usually, most CoG/HGs are only about two hours. This one lasted me four to five, though I am a quick reader. But the pacing makes sense. The narrative follows a traditional arc—introduction, escalation, resolution— and thankfully, Wang doesn't rush the ending like so many others do. Instead, the plot in each [i]Infinity[/i] book is a neatly wrapped up narrative and can stand on its own. There's no "sequel bait."
[*]UI. You can tell the author loves his work! The chapter titles are actual images that describe the contents (e.g. "In which the officer goes on a journey"; there's a long glossary, and maps. Super cool, nerdy stuff.

[*] First in a long series. As a rule, I try not to read WIPs or books in a series. The chance an author will finish a long series is virtually nil, in my experience. And I feel like some authors try to drag out their content for $$$. While I firmly believe this isn't the case with Wang because the quality and momentum of the existing entries inspire confidence, committing to a multi-book saga always requires patience. The emotional and narrative payoff is substantial, but it unfolds over years rather than a single release. So far, there's three books with the fourth on the way.
[*] No romance/sexuality/gender options. Like I said earlier, the game’s narrow role is intentional and thematically coherent, but players accustomed to broad customization may feel constrained. There are no romance paths in this installment, and identity options are fixed. Future entries do expand these areas, yet currently the experience prioritizes historical-military authenticity and narrative focus over personalization.

An amazing start of the series.
Erster Teil einer tollen Reihe...die Teile werden immer länger und komplexer und nach meiner Meinung hat der Autor bisher sein hohes Niveau ungebrochen gehalten!
Sabres is a good Choice of Game in and of itself, but it is in relation to its sequels that it becomes exceptional. This first entry is brief compared to many of Paul Wang's other titles, and it is linear in a way that may frustrate some avid Choice of players. It is also non-standard in that it does not allow for the same degree of customization as many other Choice of Games, insisting that the player character must be a man (almost always a young man) from a low ranking noble house, and offering neither and explored choice of sexuality, or of romantic options. These elements are almost standard in other Choice of Games, so their absence is briefly striking, and may be upsetting to some folks who like the radical freedom. The restrictions, though, contribute to an immaculate setting that is enriched tremendously by the sequel games and the world building that the other publishes monthly on his blog. The restriction of character options is plot central, and is explored at greater depth in the subsequent entries in the series.
Paul Wang is an excellent writer, and the simplicity of this first installment to his Dragoon saga is a good way for players to dip their toe into his world. If they find that the vaguely Napoleonic, militaristic, conservative setting is not to their liking, they can easily bow out without too much investment. If they find themselves gripped, they can continue with a story that rapidly expands to consider questions like the burden of command, the nature of justice of good conduct in war, the strengths and weaknesses of a highly striated and rigid social hierarchy, the impacts of industrialization/modernization, class dynamics, etc. The Dragoon saga is, to me, the gold standard of Choice of Games, and this first entry, while it lacks the depth of its sequels, is an excellent beginning.

Son olarak kitabın dili öyle çok ahım şahım bir şey değil ancak ingilizcesi zayıf olanların takılabileceği noktalar mevcut. Türkçe yaması da olmadığı için eğer okumaya kararlıysanız bu deneyimi ilaveten bir dil egzersizi olarak düşünebilirsiniz. Kitabın çıkmasından bu yana geçen 12 yıllık süreçte hiçbir Türkçe inceleme yazılmadığı için yol göstermek adına bu yazıyı yazma ihtiyacı hissettim. Okuyucularına şimdiden iyi okumalar dilerim.

Absolutely loved it. Even if you're not a fan of interactive fiction or games like this, I would still highly recommend it. I myself, was at first a bit put off by the fact that it was mostly text based, but now I would not have it any other way. I've only completed a single campaign so i can't comment on its replay value, but needless to say, what i did experience in my single playthrough was a remarkable setting and well written prose. The only criticism I can offer is that importing the save to its sequel wasn't straightforward, but that's just me grasping at straws. A total banger. TIERRA AND VICTORY!
Пишу рецензію відразу на три гри Sabres of Infinity, Guns of Infinity, Lords of Infinity. Не бачу сенсу писати різну для кожної, в результаті це все одно одна суцільна історія. Можна взяти окремо першу, щоб оцінити, а ось брати другу або третю окремо я не бачу сенсу.
Історія доволі цікава і різноманітна. Є доволі багато варіантів проходження гри, особливо в другій частині. В мене сумарно вийшло 17 годин на проходження всіх 3 ігор, і це одне проходження з кількома перепроходженнями окремих моментів.
Один великий мінус, який би я виділив це неможливість відійти трошки назад на минулий чекпоінт, якщо тобі не подобається історія. Це більше менш фікситься в третій грі в якій після кожної глави в тебе питають чи хочеш ти її перепройти чи ні. В перших двух іграх, тобі треба проходити з нуля усю гру до моменту який тобі не подобається кожен раз, що доволі бісить.

Unfortunately, unless you pick well, the reward for failures doesn't seem to be many insights other than making you feel stink for not selecting an optimal character, or knowing what the decisions will actually entail, should you not actually mind-read where the story is headed.
To be charitable to Sabres of Infinity, it was fine and I enjoyed my time with it enough... but I don't feel that I can in good conscious give this game series a positive recommendation moving forward... and giving this first game a negative review is too harsh. Therefore, I cannot stress this point enough: if you don't make certain ideal choices in this first instalment you are highly likely not going to enjoy the following two Infinity Games... which makes buying this first one a waste of time and money.
At the very least, I cannot recommend buying all three at once unless you are certain you'll enjoy these sorts of games. If you haven't enjoyed other games of this genre/subject matter much in the past, I would recommend finding something else.
Nice game, some ways to improve the game:
- More content would've been nice.
- A soundtrack would've helped to increase to make the game more immersive, different soundtrack for key decisions would've helped to increase the gravity of choices.
- It would've been better if there was a way to see the sentiment of the different characters like it is in The Life And Suffering Of Sir Brante which could be used to unlock more choices and manipulate other characters much better.
Still a pretty immersive game overall. Would recommend - 8/10

Play this game, then play Guns and Lords of Infinity. This series should be regarded in the same leagues as the best works of Tolkien and JRR Martin.
I absolutely love this game, and it as a story, and how it does actually tie back within itself and your choices. Case and point, looking at the achievement statistics, I was the vast minority that made a character which was completely incapable of surviving the final chapter (and I did try). Regardless, it's great. I love the writing, love the story, and highly recommend Sabres of Infinity.

One of the best Hosted Games series, you have quite a few choices and setting is pretty fun and rather unique.
Amazing reading and fantastic adventure. I felt really immersed in it and it all comes with a strong replayability, the choices you make affects both the things you can do as well the way you speak, the evolution of your pg is present and effective and the story itself it's really well planned and it doesn't fail to surprise and amaze the player. i truly recommend this.

First game in a series that seems to be somewhat the tale of the English Civil War with a heavy bent on Napoleonic era warfare. The story is engaging, but this is essentially just a novel. And not even a visual novel at that. If you can enjoy LitRPG style content or CYA style storytelling and don't mind the lack of graphics, there is a very compelling story underneath.

I want to let everyone who has become, for very good reason, wary of CoG games because of their political propagandizing this game is a Godsend. it is well written, with MUCH more impact choices, and as it will tell you people are treated differently based on sex and race, which they should as that makes for a good story.
I've also played CoG games in the past where on their third more modern book does a 180 on this and suddenly starts propagandizing, and I can tell you. That is not the case with this series, so feel secure for now that this is a great tale and one I am now enjoying a second playthrough through the whole series, whereas I played through the third book 3 times, I'm not enjoying to play through the whole series for a second time. So, do buy this game if you enjoy what you've read about the story, and if you enjoy this type of gaming experience, as I do.

A game where choices matter as much as this you'll hardly ever find - unless you count the sequels, I guess. Well written too, naturally. Very much the best that interactive fiction has to offer.
friend of mine sang his praises about this game, but getting snubbed after one choice, the only wrong one apparently, left me feeling like my choices weren't worth anything unless i picked the correct ones
other than that, i didn't feel invested in this setting/genre that didn't draw me in as much as i wanted it to, it felt a little bland
what a dissapointing exercise in a failed skill system
getting locked into -20 loyalty before you even fight, in addition to every single check raising loyatly afterwards being around 3-5? yeah
great when the first actual check requires loyalty to be quite high for you to not autofail instantly, completly ignoring every single thing that happend before, including the entirety of your character
riveting
I may not have ended up a high-ranking official, but I made some solid well-meaning friends and didn't get anyone killed for no reason. Had a romping old time and retired at the age of 19 having done absolutely bugger-all in terms of glory (besides shooting at some heathens from an old house about half a mile from the battle) and managed to preserve myself and see a bit of the war. I did punch a high-ranking officer in the face and got away with it too. Can't complain.
The best $8 you will ever spend on Steam. This game and its sequel are absolutely worth it.

Fantastic beginning to a longer-running series. While this one doesn't have quite as many branches as the later games, it does a great job of taking you from nobody to a minor somebody. The choices are fun, low risk, the characters are understandable and relatable... Really, if you like this genre, try it

So i wasn't sure about this game going in, iv never played a text based game before but i wanted to give it a try, 6 hours later i purchased gun of infinity and lords of infinity.
Do not get me wrong. The writing is good, but the choices are not. The choices you make impact essentially too much, you can back yourself into a corner without knowing it and have no clue what you did wrong, and have no chance of surviving.

Ehh, personally I think the game is too focused on making you some kind of superhero, jumping head first into every battle rewards you while approaching things more coolheaded leaves you with nothing.
I finished the game with basically a penal legion with low morale and low loyality, which was an interesting experience but it really feels like that the game is not meant to be played this way.
For example learning the language of my enemy, which I thought might prove useful, was utterly pointless because all it got used for was a single occasion with little to no importance.
So yeah if you want to play a hotheaded soldier with plotarmor go for it, but if your objective is surviving the war and not glory then you will notice that the author simply didn't account for that.
Edit: After some testing it seems like the game is specifically made for charisma and strength characters, while intelligence gets mostly ignored, or better said without charisma you don't get the opportunity to even use your brain:
At one point my character was like :"I have a better plan!" , and the commander was like "I don't care, I just want everyone to agree that my plan is the best."
So yeah the game was written for a very specific playstyle : "Command grabbing glory hound"
Additionally there are choices that are simply wrong: saying "a pleasure" is rude ... you need to say "at your service"... which leads to a completely different reaction.
How would I as a reader know how your fictional nobility works?
Ultimately there is a "right" way to play while the other ways are pretty underdeveloped which invalidates the whole "choice"-aspect of the game.
There are a select few perfect ways to play this game and you will be doomed to failure if you don't follow them - you'll miss out on many experiences you'd otherwise have. It doesn't matter if you think a certain decision your character could make might work. The author has a clear idea on what they think is right and wrong.
It's also unclear that you'll miss out on content by making certain decisions. Being successful can actually punish you by locking you out of content after you seek to raise rank.
There is no romance until game 2 and it's only 2 options. The third game has yet to be released.
Overall, a linear story with merely the illusion of choice, IMO.

A regular reader of my reviews advised me to check out Paul Wang's Dragoon Saga (also known as "The Infinite Sea," after the world in which it is set). "It will change your life," he promised. I was skeptical. I'd always figured I would get around to it eventually, but it had never stuck out in my mind as exceptionally enticing. "The career of a young military officer in a quasi-historical setting" isn't the most original premise - the first CS game I ever played was about exactly that - and war fiction has never been a genre to which I was particularly drawn. But I decided I would give *Sabres of Infinity*, the first book of the Dragoon Saga, a try.
I don't know that it's changed my life, exactly, unless you count turning me into a Paul Wang fan. Fortunately, he's one of the more prolific CS writers, having written four official CoG titles as well as *Sabres* and its sequel, *Guns of Infinity*. That all should be enough to tide me over until the third volume, *Lords of Infinity*, comes out - whenever that may be.
*Sabres of Infinity* is such a polished and mature work, it's amazing to consider that this was Wang's first published game, the product of a college student in his early twenties. The world of the Infinite Sea is grounded in European history and military tradition in a way that speaks to a depth of knowledge born of hundreds of hours of research, but it's not just the Napoleonic Era with the serial numbers filed off. Wang has obviously constructed this world with meticulous care, in terms of history, geography, cultural norms and values, societal roles, traditions, and even socioeconomics.
Despite some understated low-fantasy elements, *Sabres* is easily one of the most realistic war games I've played. Wang doesn't contrive reasons to put his wet-behind-the-ears PC at the center of major military decisions. The character spends at least as much time taking orders as giving them. He begins his military career patrolling a remote outpost, long months of tedium punctuated by occasional bloody skirmishes. And yet, the choices he makes as he carries out those orders - his priorities, his recklessness or caution, courage or cowardice, assertion of will or mindless obedience, will determine the course of his career. He can build his reputation and rise through the ranks, die in battle, or - perhaps worst of all - settle for mediocrity. The ending I got, although it would probably be considered a "bad ending" in gameplay terms, was so in keeping with who my character was that I couldn't even complain.
Wang's treatment of war is richly nuanced, in a way I think most of the soldiers whose memoirs I've read would approve. There's glory in it, and excitement, and also sadness and atrocity. It's about the battlefield, but also about politics and discipline and morale and the camaraderies and rivalries among men. It is primal and raw, humanity at its worst and occasionally its best. A lot of people on the CoG forum have mentioned avoiding this game because it's genderlocked to male. I understand why that might be unappealing to players weary of the oversaturated male default in the gaming world, but I would like to suggest this game may be worth a try anyway.
*Sabres of Infinity* is an amazing game. I'll be very excited to see what comes next in the world of the Infinite Sea.

The writing is engaging and I love war stories. The choices do affect the outcome of the story but not in as pervasive a manner as with "Choice of Robots". It will be very interesting to see how the different end states play out in the next game of the series.

An engrossing, well written narrative with vast replayability.
I'm rewriting my review because the third book is coming out likely within the year and I replayed the game a couple months back. Honestly the game is really really good, the setting is detailed and fascinating but not so cumbersome to be boring, the writing is evocative in ways that make you feel present in whatever scene is described while also doing a great job of making you feel like an officer in an army. The choices are seriously interesting too, with your options ranging from ending up a disgraced officer with little renown or one of the most prestigious up and comers in the army. Really good stuff and the second game only gets better.

A write your own story type of game where you take the place of a young (or maybe not so young) officer of a Dragoon regiment. Relatively fast, action packed with tough decisions all around. It is certainly short, but definitely recommended.

Sabres of infinity es CYOA con una riqueza en lo que a la trama se refiere asombrosa. Nos ponemos en la piel de un "cornet" (oficial de caballería de menor rango) que acaba de alistarse en el ejército de su nación, Tierra, para luchar contra la liga de Antari. Las armas de fuego empiezan a cobrar importancia y las espadas o la magia conocida como "baneblood" también comienza a decaer en pos de artillería pesada, capaz de destrozar incluso la armadura encantada más resistente.
Pero volvamos a lo que nos atañe. Sabres of infinity no es un juego con un gran número de decisiones, ni tienen especial relevancia en el devenir de la guerra. Somos un soldado más ocupando las filas del ejército y luchando por el honor de su majestad el rey. Luchamos, mandamos a nuestra tropa, combatimos y esperamos haberlo hecho lo suficientemente bien como para llevarnos una condecoración. A veces nos conformamos con salir con vida.
En cualquier caso, este es un juego recomendadísimo. Lo habré jugado fuera de Steam unas 10 horas, sin exagerar. Siempre encuentro un detalle nuevo, algo que se me escapa.
En resumidas cuentas, si eres fan de la temática y ya has jugado con anterioridad a algún juego de Choice of Games, estoy seguro de que no te arrepentirás. Y si este es tu primero, te recomendaría echarle un vistazo primero a Choice of Robots.
it's pretty good
If you're on this page, chances are you are interested in these sort of games, just don't know whether this game is worth it or not... It absolutely is! The story is amazing, and your choices do actually matter (that is, to some degree), so if you want to enjoy a good interactive story, I couldn't recommend a better game... Now let me play Guns of Infinity (which I bought few minutes before I wrote this review, and right after I completed the game).

For a game with few images and no real "gameplay" it really makes you feel immersed as a soldier who works his way up the ranks however he chooses. Are you an honorable hero? A dastardly coward. Or maybe a coward with a good heart, who wants tries his best but it just isn't good enough. All is possible and more. This game really lets you feel the weight of your decisions, to the point where while i was playing i would feel sadness everytime some of my men died, and i worked as hard as i could to keep them alive. This payed off as by the ending of the game against overwhelming odds i told my men that any who wished to retreat could with no repercussions, and not a single one ran. The game is the price of a coffee, and provides a far more enjoyable experience then a coffee. Buy it, you almost certainly wont regret it.

Solid writing. The general shape of the plot is predictable, but given that this is a game (not a book) it actually works out quite well. The price is low for the fun to be had.

This game allow us to go into the military, and build our own carrer with plenty of paths to go, at a time like the "Napoleonic Wars".
It's a very good franchise with three games released, next one the author its working, will be game 4 of 5.
If you like to read and also control the path of your own character, then this game is for you.
