Why, in this game's entire lifespan, have crouch cancelling and platform dropping continued to be the strongest and most anti-competitive aspects of gameplay with minimal changes? Don't get me started on Amsa teching - it's cool in Melee because it's hard, in this game it's braindead. Combined with the fact that every character kills you for trying to edgeguard them, means:
1) There's no point in trying to hit anyone on the ground (and even in the air, for some unknown reason) at lower to mid percents (♥♥♥♥, I've had people CC my ♥♥♥♥ at 90)
2) There is no point in pressuring someone on a platform. The action-after-tech window is so short that they just put up shield and then drop with their best aerial
3) Hitting someone for going above the ledge is pointless. They just press L/R with a gigantic baby mode window and tech the ledge
4) Edgeguarding isn't even worth the cost because you're probably not going to kill them off of that interaction, and the likelihood you're going to die for even attempting it is astronomical
So what is the real gameplay? You just circle camp around each other, fighting for middle stage, and try to abuse these mechanics as best as you can. This game has a lot of potential but is trying way too hard to be easy mode Melee. Just cut the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and it will be fine.

Never played the original, but this is the closest to "Smash greatness" I've seen in a platform fighter. The transition is smooth and the online is infinitely better. A great place for fans who are between Melee and Ultimate.

Super Slop Bros Melee
I first played this game when it came out, and coming from rivals 1 I was disappointed about the changes and found the game just not enjoyable. I got into melee quickly after and loved in, and a year later after starting to play this game again I can say that its an enjoyable and a refreshing game, at least coming from a melee player. This game relates so much more to a plat fighter like melee than rivals 1 that it feels like calling it "Rivals 2" just because it has the same characters is almost misleading. Coming from melee though, its refreshing to play a game thats very easy to move in with a cool cast of characters, and from it looks like a dev team that has only makes the game better month after month with the patches
TLDR give it a try if u come from melee if u come from rivals 1 u probably wont like it
This game is great and really fun, it also has a monetization system that isn't all that preditory (although skins are pricy, characters and battle passes are free and said battle passes can be done at anytime and reloaded when their "over"). [strike]However this game has piss poor optimisation which is why I stopped playing and don't feel comfortable recommending to people until they fixed that properly, therefor it should not have been Steam Deck verified in my opinion.[/strike]
Update: They've updated the optimisation in the short time I stopped playing and while it isn't perfect it is a hell of a lot better than how it was before and actually runs perfectly fine with only a few minor hiccups here and there. So while it still can be inproved upon it is now perfectly playble on Steam Deck (keep in mind that I do run it on low to high settings in terms of specefic graphics settings).
the gameplay has a lot of polish and great presentation for its early state, and i can only see it getting better from here
tho with nothing to do except sweat in competitive matches its hard to just casually enjoy the game. if you buy it, consider it an investment before the casual content releases in a few weeks

Cannot learn this game, because people will ♥♥♥♥ on you in casual, people will ♥♥♥♥ on you in ranked, the playerbase is sweats and tryhards and there is absolutely no space to learn and/or goof around. There are simply no new players who would like to learn, and I get CONSISTENTLY ranked against people above me. This simply isnt fun, and you don't feel any progress. Dead ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game man.

I truly feel that this is the best platform fighter out there. It's the evolution of melee and project m brought out into a smooth and updated package. Yes, it can be a bit much for new players to take in when all they've played is the newer Smashes, but there is so much more to learn and play with. The movement is crisp, the designs are a breath of fresh air, and every character truly feels unique and different. With any fighting game out there, you've just gotta get destroyed a bunch of times to get good. I think it's worth it.
For someone who played Smash Bros. Melee, this game has an really amazing gameplay with interesting characters and as well as a neat story!

I played the first one a few times. It was okay. I bought this one to give it a try and couch-play with some cohorts. It was okay, for like, a few times playing, then I uninstalled it. Nothing inspiring or fun unless you are a diehard about it, which ultimately, makes it a bad game. I think the characters are interesting but I think the moves are boring. The thing that is appealing in Smash is that it originally wasn't really a tournament focused game and there was just strange and chaotic things. It was fun. This is fun at times but there's not really anything to play for.
- You can play ranked but anyone playing ranked is a Smash player or past Rivals player. That's fine except you're already behind in most case. Go watch invest your time (a lot of time) to learn and get better. No rewards really worth it.
- No unlockables or unappealing ranking system.
- No extra modes or fun things in local.
- Characters Look somewhat diverse but nothing inspiring to switch between. There really isn't a character that I'm like "wow that's cool!" It's all...uninspiring.
- Audio composition in general is uninspiring.
- The ROA fans will back their game even though to be honest, this is a $10 game that you pay too much for. Just not worth it.
The thing is, there are free games that mimic this style and they are better, aka Brawlhalla, and others. Yet you pay for this...
Gameplay feels like after playing tekken boot up soulcalibur or virtua fighter. or after playing street fighter boot up random 2d ♥♥♥♥♥♥ anime fighting game. characters really look cool i mean thats why i give the shot. but ♥♥♥♥♥♥ UI and menu controls, a little bit looks like caesar salad tbh. i guess they dont have any vision when they creating other stuff outside of gameplay.

ledge hogging exists... personally I am very sad I only learnt this after I passed the amount of time for steam to not take it as a refund, don't let it happen to you if this is deal breaking news. other things are annoying too but barely worth mentioning, la reina side special sending her to her death if whiffed next to the ledge is disappointing to see, that type of stuff just sucks, and doesn't feel good to see as either player.
I hope these types of things get fixed as the game is a very fresh take on the platform fighter genre, some minor balancing issues, and the ledge hogging thing seem like easy things to fix, so if they do I will have to recommend it.
This is such a tough review because of how good the bones of this game feel. The combat is fun, the movement is fun, the lore (thought I admittedly know little of) is neat. I am not going to pretend like I am an expert at this game or higher level fighting games in general, because I am not. What I am is someone who wants to have fun with a game that I am playing, and in the state that this game currently is in, I can not.
I understand the goal of this game's creation, and I know that is is heavily influenced by Melee, which explains why there is such a monumental skill ceiling for this game. But that fact, mixed with the game's unfortunate dwindling playerbase, makes the matchmaking in this game very unbalanced. I am being thrown in to games with people that can move around the map in ways that should not be biblically possible. I understand the common response would be "get good" and I get it, if I want to enjoy this game I should, but I do not want to invest hundreds of hours into this game just so that I can perfect the movement and be on par with the other 50 players online at any given time. It just is not worth it, and that really sucks because for a time, I really really enjoyed this game when there was a wide range of skill levels I would encounter. I wish I had a solution to this. The game just is not for me anymore.

I can get up to Gold 2 on Guilty Gear Strive, so I know I should be able to win some matches in the lowest rank, but nope.
I've played Smash since the n64, and I've never been as BTFO'd as I have been in bottom tier on here.
I truly love this game. Its extremely fun and creative, rewarding time investment. Developers are also very accessible and the care they put into the game shows.
I ultimately cannot give it a 5 because it is still behind in optimization and bug fixes, but I still recommend.

I really wanted to like this game. I was a huge fan of Rivals 1, but every time i come back to 2 im more and more disapointed. Kind of wish they just kept supporting the first game. Atleast then the community wouldn't be fractured like it is now.
Hit-stun is either nonexistent or lasts an eternity. Shields and ledges ruin the feeling of what was a unique platform fighter.

Other than that adding overpriced microtransactions to a 25€ game is ridiculous, the game is optimized HORRIBLY, the controls for keyboard and mouse are ATROCIOUS. The matchmaking is even worse.
Overall a big letdown considering how good the first game was, be better.

if you haven't played any other platform fighters seriously before, there is no fun to be had. All the people who play this game probably come from smash and all their skills and knowledge carry over. which is most likely why i have not fought a single player who was at my same level, even while i have 60 hours in the game. If you are new to the genre, this game is just not worth the time. That is, unless you enjoy losing constantly, and spending hours in the training range while watching videos on how to land a single combo, or even a single hit.
as someone who almost played 100 hours theres alot of emotions i feel towards this game. i feel alot of good things but i feel alot more bad things about it. this game was gifted to me by one of my best friends and i do enjoy playing with them for the most part but i really struggle to push myself to play it despite that
***Knocking your opponent off stage in this game does not reward you with an advantage state.
The recoveries in this game are way too powerful and, players are highly incentivized to play neutral until they see an opening to start their kill setup combo. If you miss that combo, you will not be taking a stock any time soon because edge guarding, gimps and stray hits rarely if ever result in a stock being taken.
Every recovery move seems to have massive hitboxes, high priority for trades and extremely short recovery frames when landing on stage. Combine this with nerfed ledge invincibility and very generous range to grab the ledge, low knockback and each character having up b, side b, air dodge, wall jump and often another move/mechanic to help recover, it makes the game feel so frustrating to play.
When I play as Maypul it feels like my only way to close out a stock at high % is to wait until I land a seed/mark and then spam tilts until one hits and I'm able to get a tether kill. It honestly feels like I cannot edge guard in this game because each character has a roided up up-b, air dodge, wall jump, braindead easy wall techs and to top it off this game has a terrible case of marth moments (or marthitis) for almost every character.
Worst of all, I think it makes spectating the game so boring and anticlimactic because a risky and creative combo that leads to an offstage spike at 80% won't kill off the bottom because of a combination of low knockback on everything and insane recoveries that'll let the spike'd player easily get back to ledge.
There's nothing better to kill the hype of a tournament viewing experience than seeing 0-100% combos that don't kill or lead to an edge guard and often times provide an advantage to the high % player because now their opponent has lost access to the majority of their kill options.
It seems like Melee esque rinse and repeat edgeguards aren't a part of the design philosophy of this game, which is fine if that's what Dan and the team want. But if you're going to make characters as difficult to kill through a traditional edgeguard as they are I think
When youre in disadvantage I think it should be on the part of the person recovering to weasel their through whatever options the person on stage is using to recover, not the other way around where the person on stage has to pick the one exact option needed to cover the exact thing they do. So many recovery options available in this game feel like they require you completely selling out to cover them while also requiring pinpoint precision to cover, and even if you do get it its unlikely to actually net a kill since recoveries are still really good aside from this specific complaint. Covering multiple options and edgeguarding reactively in this game feels like a fools errand, and obviously if you're playing purely predictively anyone who does a decent job of mixing up their recoveries is going to get back for free almost every time.
This was one of the first points of contention I had with the game, as logically it feels B A D when you get a cool combo, gain the upper hand, knock someone off stage and then...they just get back. Worse, if you try to go for a read and go for a deep edge guard, you will probably be reversed and die. Even if you get the read correctly, half the cast can recover from the depths of hell.
I don't even edge guard in this game to kill my opponent, I just do it apply damage, because I know by some miracle of god they'll find a way back haha.
***Floorhugging enables mindless spam that is unfair for the person that actually won neutral. Characters with fast downtilts get rewarded the most by pressing down AFTER getting hit. I don't mind CC, but floorhug is just stupid. Some characters like loxodont don't have a fast move that they can do out of CC or FH.
If this game ever becomes fun to me, I'll happily change my review to a positive one, but as it stands this is the most disappointment I've ever felt in a game

***shields
shields are just way too strong and it feels like you need to space everything perfectly to actually be safe. Shield dropping is basically a free followup 90% of the time. shield stun feels like it either doesn't or there's now way around it with no in between. Parry almost feels left behind as an option because not only does it feel slower (especially if you do it out of shield) it seems like most interactions leave you less time for a punish than they did before in Rivals 1. I'd much rather just shield everything because when you get those instances of seemingly no shield stun, it's a much better payout than having the risk of missing a parry.
Don't even get me started on floor hugging (again). At least with melee the counterplay to it is super clear. Here it is just so good, have tilt stick on and you can mash out of scrambles at low percents or just shield it straight up mid whatever and personally, countering it with certain moves feels extremely inconsistent. landing a spike would essentially counter it but at that point im just ready to shield the move.
***Parry
Parry is really good on ultimate. Here, it is a hard call-out. It comes out frame 6 (frame 3 if not in shield stun and its against a projectile). Mind you, there are plenty of kill moves that come out frame 7, meaning you cannot react. It has to be a read. Unfortunately, parry has so much end lag its almost never an option you should use.
***Lack of drift DI makes aerial combos too easy to perform, while also making it frustrating to die in situations where drift DI would have been a very intuitive tool.
Another one hundred word essay wouldn't be long enough to encapsulate how disappointed I feel about this game, but if you read all this, thanks and I'm sorry. I really just wish this game was fun. For everyone that's still on the blue pill right now, I'm glad you're able to enjoy the game, but I don't have that hope left in me anymore.

Best Platform fighter I've ever played. But something needs to change to improve the online experience.
Personally I think it could be solved by character specific ranks, with the current system everyone from silver to masters is trying desperately to climb with their main and there is no room for learning new characters. Friends that I have recommended this game to loved it but still ended up dropping it before they even finished placements.
Also casual is just where highest level players go once they're reached their desired rack. Match ups in casual are even more oppressive to new players than ranked.

Unfortunately a downgrade from Rivals 1 in every way except graphics. A massive departure from everything that made the first game interesting. Every mechanic that made the original unique has either been toned down or removed entirely to make way for tired gimmicks in the genre. Shields, knockdowns, grabs, ledges have been done more times than has been worth mentioning. To turn Rivals into another one of these slow Smash Clones rather than its own interesting exploration of the platform fighter genre is a betrayal of what Rivals of Aether has stood for. Drift DI, edgeboosting, low aerial landing lag for expressive combos, all these things made Rivals so special. Maybe workshop support will allow backporting of mechanics and I'll return then, but for now is just not worth my time.
Incredible game! Very fluid and mechanically deep platform fighter with unique characters. Great for casuals and sweats alike! Can't wait to see the wacky custom characters that are coming with the Workshop!
First of all, this game hasn`t launched in 2 days, so be sure to refund it if your deck won`t play it.
This is the best fighting game I`ve played since Ultimate and has some improved combat options over that, especially with the number of things you can do from a ledge. Unsure about balance, since the last time I played this with my nephews via TV dongle the only viable character was the beetle. Also, the audio only came out the deck speakers, so a port to anything else would be nice.
this game is so close to being good. i dont like any of the characters as they all feel gimmicky and annoying to fight. the netcode is 50/50 on whether ill have a smooth connection. idk, just not my thing and i really wanted it to be :/

Rivals 2 is an awesome game!... When it is playable.
You will get on one day, have an awesome time, pull off sick combos and such, etc. Then, after virtually any kind of update, your game will go straight to the dumpster. Sometimes you find a fix on Reddit, sometimes you're SOL for a few weeks until something gets fixed. I play at least a few hours a week and really enjoy the game, but inevitable I will get online one day to be met with ultra-jacked-up frame skips or giant lag spikes that make it entirely unplayable. Very frustrating.
If you can't play the game as intended, I can't recommend it. Unfortunately, this happens often enough that I'd tell people it's good ONLY WHEN it's actually working, but that's completely random.

Love this game, amazing in every way, its super fun.
Its not the same game as Rivals of Aether 1, which is my favorite game ever, and thats ok. (600 hours eek). Its my personal belief, as an indie fighting game dev, that fighting games' sequels should change a lot of the mechanics from the pervious games. Even though the new rivals 2 shares a lot of mechanics from Super Smash Bros on paper, it doesn't play a whole lot similar. There are no super fast out of shield attacks, so most of the back-and-forth that in smash comes from quick out of shield options comes from rivals much hated "floorhugging" mechanic. Your rolls and getup options are much slower compared to Rivals 1 and Smash, so you can easily get read / read your opponent, and continue your combo. At the level im at (silver) i havent interacted that much with ledgehogging, but the ledge trapping does feel very similar to smash. I still wish it had drift DI though...
maybe in rivals 3 they'll make it play like brawlhalla /j
I like how unique the kits are and how excellent the movement is
Its like the first game, but with 3D visuals, more style, wave dashing, special attacks, and raging over unfair plays and tech. The gameplay once again follows an "easy to pick up, hard to master" playing curve where its possible to get completely owned by any character without having a chance to recover. The graphics are polished and the music is still great. In addition to the parry system from the first game, they took a book from Smash and added in shields, throws, and ledge grabbing (the ledge hogging version, not ledge trumping like modern Smash). The newly added specials also add in an extra level of depth and utility to the gameplay.
To be honest, there some parts of the game that are flat out unfair, such as the constant floor hugging and wave dashing making all kinds of dodging either redundant or pointless since everyone can just tech chase you for a zero to death combo, but there is something about this high-paced action that keeps making me come back to prove myself. Once again, the competition is unforgiving and even the single-player arcade mode will ruin you if you don't have the concepts or a decent strategy down. It's still expanding its features with more characters, content, and the workshop, but it will probably come to be later down the line and still good for what it is right now. Regardless, this is the kind of game that challenges you for the same reasons as the first game and handles itself well for most of the same reasons as the first chaotic war of Aether.

Feels like smash bros to me. it's important to play with the same people you'd be playing smash with though, I don't think I'd like this as much if it wasn't with the bros, but that's more commentary on how the platform fighting community behaves by skill level.

So this game pretty much followed what other fighting games have done for the past years, focus too much on the mechanics and feel of the game and not too much on single player content. I love this game, I've played every Smash bros since 64 and also PM and P+ and this is probably the best non-smash platform fighter. However, i do think it is lacking single player content right now and its more focused in it's very competitive audience.
It has a very high skill ceilling, you're probably getting destroyed at the start even if you have experience in other platform fighters mainly because every character is very unique and have their own bag of tricks, but once you get the hang of it, just moving around with any character feels so rewarding and fun.
The game is still being updated with patches and new characters, and the roadmap says it's adding more single player content in the near future. Also, the workshop is in beta right now and some people are cooking with the things they're crafting, looking forward to it.
Also it is important to mention the DLC characters are free with no charge, there are microtransactions involving skins, icons and many other things focusing on cosmetics, but you can just grind the game and get the ones you want since you constantly get in-game currency
One more thing, I hate Clairen, with my whole heart. Nerf Clairen, buff Ranno, Galvan is amazing, sick game. Thank you Mr. Dan Furnace.
Pettition to possibly get some player report features and some real servers (I know the servers are in progress, but it has been long enough. at leas a code rewrite for the servers is due.) I swear to god people are using lag switches on ranked. When it is last stock on a somewhat normal match when the connection rubber bands to beyond 100 latency and ping on both ends. it is not a me issue either. only rivals. Please fix immediately. I have grown tired of waiting 8 seasons already., a full year past release and no server fix is a dead game.

As a platform fighter fan, this is such a beautifully crafted game, combat feels smooth, the balance is great, art is fantastic, sound effects are snappy, and the online is excellent, ranked is a lot of fun if your more of a competitive player, and looking foward to what the rivals 2 team adds next!

I'm starting to really enjoy the game! I've lost a lot of times online (I get ranked with silver and gold players but I am unranked), but I saw myself getting better after practicing a week on it. Even won three battles online (but not sets, still working on that.) This game has a high floor to get into and there is so much to learn, especially if you're coming from no smash melee experience like myself. If you want to get online and battle at tournements, I'd recomend having a friend or two teaching you the ropes on the game. Asthetics are super nice and character designs are super peak. There's not really an exapination of the lore in this game unless you look at the character trailers, but developers are working on a story mode so it'll be a good introduction to lore. I do agree more casual content would be nice, but if you're looking for something to sink your teeth into, this is a great game to do so.

The casual experience is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for online play, you face any random opponent rank so you get dunked on.
So you move to ranked, and get dunked on again, or face someone who has no clue what they are doing. Little to no in between, complete lack of a proper progression to really track my improvements as a player.
This games mechanics are very Smash Bros Melee-like in all the worst ways. Floor hugging, Amsah-teching. Luigi Wave-dashing everywhere
If you just wanna enjoy some games with friends then you'll be happy with this, I certainly do.
