TURN BACK NOW! Do NOT play this game. It's worse than CRACK.

I've only started playing this game 5 days ago and already clocked in over 23 hours. That's because this is the THE game where you go in thinking you'll put 5 minutes in, only to find out that, by design, it'll have you glued to your computer for hours and hours on end. It ruined my life...

The unique rogue-like mechanics of the game all insidiously encourage long play times, as many of them are akin to gambling. These include the random item drops (until you get a powerup that lets you select items, which makes the game MORE addicting in a way), the time limit being tied to difficulty (meaning more enemies, which you need to kill to get the game's currency, appear the longer you are in a level), and your character being slow as hell until you find the necessary powerups, which means it takes insanely long times to navigate the gigantic maps of the game, all of which are largely determined by random chance.

It's hard to rate the game when much of the play experience is determined by RNG, but I can say that the music is extremely good, and there's loads of artful ideas in there, such as the monster diary entries. There really should have been more maps though, as the 8 or so you do see here, while huge, aren't enough to play over and over again even with all the RNG elements.

Just avoid this one. It really cost me dearly haha

This game is alright I suppose, there's not much to talk about really. The game is pretty old and feels outdated, the artstyle is really simple, the music is good (although it feels way to energetic for what's actually happening in-game), the gameplay is repetitive and kinda boring, enemies are dumb as bricks and their pathfinding can be really easily abused, there's basically no story to this game (at least I couldn't really pick up on one).

The achievements are pretty easy mostly because there's so few of them even though in-game there's a whole page for "challenges" that has quite a lot but the devs just cherry picked a handful for steam I guess.

Плюс: когда ты наконец добиваешь финального монстра — это как если бы ты выиграл в лотерею, но приз — просто "не умер".Вердикт: 9/10. Запусти, если хочешь почувствовать себя космическим неудачником с хорошим рефлексом. Только не забудь паузу — иначе забудешь, как жить.

brilliant game, got it cause I've been addicted to ror2. although for some reason none of my stuff is saved once I close the game, including keybinds which all reset to blank and have to be redone every time. probably not an issue on your part cause im running it on an old laptop but itd be nice to have it check your achievements to give your stuff back or something like that.

Way too difficult and stressful for the casual gamer. Lack of permanent upgrades is a deal-breaker for me. It's like the Binding of Isaac without any of the breaks, art, or story. Also pretty poor controller compatibility in the menu screens.

Risk of Rain (2013) is a chaotic, pixel-art roguelite that somehow still holds up as a genuine classic — the unpredictable runs, the wild item stacking, and that iconic soundtrack kept me coming back long after I should have called it quits. Made by two college students, it has that rare kind of soul that modern games rarely replicate, and dying for the hundredth time never stopped feeling like my own fault in the best possible way. That said, the current situation with the EULA and Gearbox's data collection practices is genuinely concerning, and it's hard to ignore when writing a recommendation in good conscience. If you want the definitive experience, Risk of Rain Returns is probably the better pick at this point — but the original still deserves respect as the game that started it all.

I have been a really huge fan of RoR2, though RoR1 is a truly different experience here, broken, unfair, and yet it beautifully renders how the young Hopoo games sees their world of Petrichor V, perhaps even better than RoR2 in some cases, i don't wanna yap in this format though, so let me be clear

Q: Is it required to play this game before RoR2?
A: Common misconception, you can play whichever, though, the relief of playing RoR1 then RoR2 hits harder and better than the other way around, especially if you're a lore player

Q: How hard is this game?
A: Ridiculuously unfair at start, though as a typical Risk of Rain game, you're the one that gets better. Still... i prefer Eclipse 3+ than Monsoon here sometimes

Q: Compared to Returns... what's the differences?
A: You already knew the answer, accept it

Q: So, do i buy this or Returns?
A: Depends on the experience you're searching, ig if you want true early indie game experience, RoR1 is the way, if you want the intended Hopoo experience where they iron out a lot of things, then RoR Returns. If you just wanna commit some rampage to lemurians, just play RoR2, trust me

Q: Overall ratings?
A: At start if i gave up in this game, i will rate it a 4/10 experience, not fun, not really intuitive. But the better you play eventually, you start seeing what people 13 years ago saw about Hopoo and their potential, the depth, the untold storytelling, the lore, it gets to a point where you realize just how advanced is a game that gives you 2 whole ATGs at different item tiers, and just how far Hopoo had thought about their world of Petrichor V that they made, it's genuinely, one of the peakest experience. 10/10. I'm still pissed off by the balance here though, 8/10, but eh, Command + Sacrifice and farm away if you're lazy, idc

Risk of Rain (2013) is one of those games that looks simple at first, then slowly reveals how deep and tense it can get. The basic idea is easy to understand: land on a hostile planet, find the teleporter, survive the waves, and move on. The catch is that time is always working against you, and the longer you stay, the more the game turns into controlled chaos.

The time-based difficulty is the feature that defines everything. You’re constantly deciding whether to keep exploring for items or rush the teleporter before enemies become ridiculous. That pressure creates a really satisfying loop where every run feels like a chain of risk/reward choices instead of a relaxed scavenger hunt.

Item building is where the fun really starts. Pickups stack and interact in ways that can turn you from “barely surviving” into an unstoppable screen-clearing machine. At the same time, the game is happy to humble you instantly if your build is weak or your positioning slips for even a second.

Each survivor plays differently enough to keep runs fresh. Some characters reward careful spacing, others want you to dive in and delete targets fast, and learning their strengths changes how you approach the same maps. It’s not just cosmetic variety—you genuinely have to adapt your movement and priorities.

The pixel art has a gritty charm, and the effects are surprisingly readable once you get used to the visual noise. Music is a big highlight too: it sells the lonely sci-fi atmosphere while still keeping the pace intense when things escalate. The whole presentation feels cohesive and memorable even by modern standards.

It can be rough around the edges compared to newer roguelites. Some deaths feel sudden, some enemies scale into absurdity, and certain runs can be decided by luck more than you’d like. But that unpredictability is also part of the identity: the game isn’t trying to be perfectly “fair,” it’s trying to keep you nervous.

Overall, Risk of Rain is highly recommended if you enjoy roguelikes where momentum matters and every minute makes the world more dangerous. It’s challenging, fast, and addictive, with that special feeling of runs spiraling from “I’m fine” to “everything is exploding” in seconds. If you can handle occasional unfair moments and like learning through repeated attempts, it’s still absolutely worth playing.
