Storyline

A nameless child with no memories awakens in the metro with only a vague sense of purpose and desire to reach the distant clocktower, hoping to find answers at the top. On the way they will discover a melancholic world filled with masked characters, monsters and perhaps the answers that the child seeks.

Good gameplay.

I love how this game handles Curses. You can realistically collect however many Curses you want and you can outplay all of them, they only restrict you in very specific, easily circumventable ways.
Except for "longer dash cooldown", very inadvisable curse. One specific boss has an attack where you need to dash 3 times (4 in corruption) and longer dash cooldown makes you have to take one of the hits.

Why is there a fishing minigame??

Maybe on paper the post-Shard-5 progression sounded really fun. You know? Break 3 beehives (one of them constantly in a secret room), find a secret room at full HP, sacrifice 2 shields, sacrifice all but 1 health... Honestly go screw yourselves. I only know all of this stuff because I Googled it. This is all way too niche. The first time I entered Calm Caldarium I didn't even know how it happened. I spent all of 2 days thinking it was because of one of the ??? Tickets I equipped on that run.

I'm guessing the concept of alternate biomes and secret ways to enter them has been inspired by Dead Cells, but they do it a lot better because they tell you how to get/find them, the same way it's so obvious in Castlevania games that when there's a really tall hole in the ceiling, it's something you can only access when obtaining High Jump. Now, what part of "break these 3 random-ass beehives throughout the biome" felt intuitive to y'all? Where even is the third beehive, it's in a secret room. The main path to progression is LOCKED in a secret room that appears at RANDOM and you wouldn't know where it is unless you got lucky with a Map or Observatory or whatever.

Anyway yeah I'm really pissed that I'm stuck at Shard 5 because progression's really random and secretive. You know, not easter eggs. Main quest progression.

While I was Googling stuff, I also happened to find info about... another secret room that only opens when you beat the game 4 times in a row on very specific Shards (8, 3, 5, 12 or something) . Y'all need to rethink what "fun" means. There's no part where people naturally discover this. This is a chore. This is tedium.

Worst part is the game's not moddable because they used the YoYo Compiler specifically to prevent people making mods for this game. There's also this game's pricing when it's not on an 80% discount. Nearly twice the price of Dead Cells, 25% more expensive than Silksong? The absolute gall.
A game of this price, and you can't even bind mouse scroll up/down and buttons 4 and 5.

EDIT: Sigh... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Give a frog to the bee/frog king, open a door rightmost of the otherwise empty metro station, get Reflection (only if cursed), stand in a light source to get Mirror Shard, max-upgrade it to get Mirror Prism, find the Broken Pocketwatch somehow, grab the Old Photo again-- hooooly tedium. And this is on a roguelite where you have to start over if you get unlucky and can't follow through with any single one of those steps. I can actively feel my will to keep playing just drain away in realtime. And that sequence is to just unlock Endless Mode, I think.

Which actually gives me a l'il bit of clarity, now I understand what's being emulated here with these convoluted secrets. It's not just Dead Cells. It's also Vampire Survivors.

love the looks, hate the mechanics, i cant bring myself to play this time and time again... it just doesnt feel good to force health preservation like this. try TBOI devil deal mechanics for a wayyyyyyyyyyy better example

I must say it saddens me that this game never got the proper attention and love that it should have got. I will always put this as one of the greatest roguelikes in my list. Hope someday we see BenStar come back if not for updating this game...maybe something new with some of the greatness that Revita had.
