Атмосфера и идея у этого рогалика по-прежнему работают. Мрачный подземный комплекс, управление ресурсами, риск в каждом шаге и ощущение хрупкости персонажей создают напряжение, которое редко встречается в современных играх. Здесь интересно наблюдать, как одна ошибка может медленно привести к провалу, а удачное решение вытянуть весь забег.

Но именно в процессе начинаешь понимать, что геймплей морально застрял в прошлом. Темп слишком вязкий, интерфейс перегружен мелочами и плохо объясняет, что вообще происходит, а многие механики приходится постигать методом тыка. Это не ощущается как осознанная хардкорность, скорее как отсутствие удобства и современных решений.

В итоге получается странный баланс. Игра по-своему хорошая, с характером и атмосферой, но играть в неё комфортно только если ты готов мириться с устаревшими подходами и медлительным процессом. Для кого-то это будет ностальгией и глубиной, для кого-то просто лишним терпением.

I like Recounter, but there are some significant issues that cause me to want to warn people away from it, even with as inexpensive as it is.

Call it a skill issue, but the only way I can imagine easily completing the game is from playing and dying on easy mode over and over to build up stats on the last surviving character (who you get to use as-is on the next attempt) and to upgrade whatever gear you want to be equipped with on your next attempt. Even on easy, healing items are scarce enough that it's easy to run out, food items are also scarce enough that it's easy to run out, and when you're out of food, just moving around the map costs health.

Another issue I had with the game in general is almost nothing is explained. You can make inferences on how specific status effects or stats work, but your guess is as good as mine. Unless you get familiar enough with the game to memorize the specific damage types of each weapon, and how effective each type is against which set of armor the enemy has, and even then, what factors that go into hit percentages isn't explained to you either. Have 4 attacks whiff in a row on 99% chance to hit, and it's hard to give credulity to anything that the combat system is telling you anyway.

The game still also has some significant bugs. On one playthrough selecting a certain weapon's special move would cause the game to soft-lock mid-combat. You could still use the main menu to exit and re-select the combat, but when you're twenty rounds into a fight it's frustrating having to start over again. Other bugs are mostly UI related, enemies disappearing, all status effects being listed as active, some submenus being displayed as active when they shouldn't be.

In short, the game has a lot of dynamic systems in combat that interact with one another. The problem is that Recounter wasn't made with a tutorial or guide to explain exactly how they work. Even if it was, it's hard to say that it would work how it says it should. You'll just have to play it and die a lot to intuit how they work, or do your best by jotting down a lot of notes--that still isn't going to fix quality of life issues like not being able to combine ammo, menus that might prioritize items that you rarely--if ever--use, and combat that can wildly swing from tough but fair, to outright punishing.
