Waste of time, can't progress without a cheat engine, apparently they didn't want anyone to enjoy it.
Game has had one update since it released. There essentially is no progression. This is a single player story game disguised as a roguelike. Wouldn't necessarily recommend this one, legit boring. As far as combat goes, there are 100 better roguelikes.

RAD certainly has the whacky and ridiculous charm you'd expect from a Double Fine game, but does not offer much in terms of gameplay. What's there is okay, but could not keep me playing. The game feels grindy and repetetive with only little character progress. It's an okay experience but not very satifsfying. Another two iterations of gameplay polishing basec on user feedback could have improved that. Not very RAD, just okay.

Hmmm... honestly its a bit difficult review.
Is it a bad game? No - but it isn't quite great either.
My main gripe, compared to other roguelites that I like - is that it feels somewhat empty. This improves after a few runs (each failed run unlocks more stuff for you), but the core combat isn't super satisfying even with various mutations changing how you should fight, so I am not quite sure how much will I be playing it.
Graphics are pretty great, characters and environments are too, but it just sort of feels very basic. Its very polished on the visuals and audio side but gameplay really feels like its secondary to everything else.
Sad, but, again, not a bad game...

It's fun, I just found the difficulty a little too unpredictable.
Some runs were easy, others I'd end up dying in mintues.
Maybe it's a user error.
Also, game was a bit glitchy in certain parts.
Anche sono non sono un amante dei Rouge-like ho voluto provare questo gioco dal prezzo più che invitante. E devo dire che mi ha divertito molto anche se è praticamente impossibile da terminare. L'idea alla base è molto carina, andando avanti ottieni poteri mutanti randomici che sono divertenti e fantasiosi, che ti trasfigurano anche nell'aspetto. Qualcuno più ispirato di altri, qualcuno molto più efficacie nel combattimento di altri, alcuni praticamente inutili, altri un vero handicap. Come dicevo, i poteri sono randomici e non ci puoi fare nulla se ti capitano delle chiaviche. Ho giocato circa 16 ore impegnandomi, poi non riuscendo ad evolvermi a dovere per gli ultimi quadri ho smesso. Soprattutto perché alla fine i livelli sono zeppi di nemici che rinascono varie volte sempre dietro le spalle, ci sono fulmini che ti colpiscono continuamente e SOPRATTUTTO non ci sono cure, per questi motivi muori sicuramente. Peccato perché rimani con un senso di frustrazione gratuito dovuto ad una difficoltà artefatta e non bilanciata. Magari sono io ad essere una pippa... chissà. Comunque è da provare per il prezzo.

Somehow Lee Petty's games keep getting worse and worse. Stacking was pretty good. Headlander kind of blew chunks. But this? This sucks. It is the worst game Double Fine has ever made. Did they just wrap it up after Microsoft acquired the studio and pushed it out the door?
The game is incredible ugly, even for the target platform of the Nintendo Switch. I don't know how such barren game can have character models be this low poly unless its intentional. Its leaning into the parody of 80s aesthetic is embarrassing.
I'm not the target audience for this since I'm not into roguelikes, but as someone that wanted to give it a chance, I don't understand it. The same empty boring environments and bland shallow combat over and over.
Maybe this game is for someone out there, but I don't know who.

The game is fundamentally boring. You repeat the same first levels every time you die, without a clear sense of progressing your character, instead relying on finding the same pickups again to make your run feel like you're getting somewhere. After each run, I'm supposedly unlocking things, but I can't find them anywhere, and they don't affect my following runs whatsoever.

They go tryhard corny 90s with this and there's nothing 'cool' about it. It's pretty substandard gameplay with goofy cartoon enemies. It's like playing a zero budget Lego video game but no fun injected into it and pretty cheap deaths sprinkled in. No invul period with this type of game is pretty obnoxious, you'll just die in a second in some acid pool or not recover fast enough and get exploded on. Tedious and really plain.

В начале игры, примерно до мира 2.1, вы сможете вживлять в себя положительные мутации, но уже дальше нужно думать, стоит ли вам в очередной раз вживлять ту или иную мутацию в себя. По прохождению игры, вы заметите разницу в "головах" Корректоров. [b]Разбитая голова[/b] - большой шанс [u]никчёмной мутации[/u].

[b]Бзики[/b] и [b]облики[/b] вы будете получать просто проходя игру. Вы зарабатываете опыт и по окончании игры, вам возможно, будет открыт новый облик или же новый бзик. Так же, возможно, откроются новые предметы для покупки в магазине.

RAD est pour moi plus qu’un jeu : c’est un concentré de ce que je m’imagine être l’esprit des années 80s — jeune, libre, combatif, et vivant dans le moment présent.
Si je devais citer un seul point positif de ce jeu, ce serait le plus grand, le plus titanesque : son OST. Les musiques de ce jeu font presque toutes mouche. Elles sont remplies d’une énergie incroyable (en particulier "Graveyard of the Ancients") ; ce sont des musiques que j’écoute souvent pour me motiver.
Mais dans RAD, il y a plus que de la musique : il y a un jeu, et Dieu que ce jeu est bon ! Pas compliqué à prendre en main, et un excellent défouloir. C’est un rogue-like avec la particularité que notre héros (ou héroïne) développe trois mutations (qui peuvent évoluer une fois) au fur et à mesure qu’il tue des mutants. Les mutations sont variées et offrent plusieurs styles de jeu (même si les armes à distance sont terriblement efficaces).
De plus, le bestiaire est assez varié, et on peut facilement trouver dans les niveaux des reliques qui offrent de bons bonus pour progresser.
Mon seul point négatif (qui n’en est pas vraiment un d’ailleurs), c’est que le contenu n’est pas assez vaste pour jouer plus de 50 heures et avoir encore des surprises. (Mais il faut bien s’arrêter un jour pour sortir le jeu, non ?)
Un dernier point positif pour vous convaincre : RAD propose de sauvegarder et quitter à chaque début de niveau — très pratique pour les joueurs comme moi qui manquent de temps dans leur journée.
Bref : RAD est un excellent rogue-like sauce années 80, à la musique qui déchire, et qui saura facilement vous satisfaire.

[b][h1]RAD[/h1][/b]Most of my time in RAD was spent grinding, despite this I didn't hate the core gameplay, there just isn't enough here for a fun roguelite experience, it gets very repetitive, very quickly. It does have some cool ideas, just not enough to make you want to play beyond a few wins.
[b][h2]Gameplay[/h2][/b]Winning a run in RAD is a gradual process, playing, learning, dying, repeating, slowly making your way through the worlds. The worlds are procedurally generated but with a limited batch of presets, so most areas are pretty rinse and repeat.
You mutate by killing enemies gaining and upgrading abilities, from ranged and AOE attacks to better movement. These only offer a small amount of build variety to the point where by the time you win your first run you'll have likely seen every build the game has to offer.
There are other mutations that buff you or give you immunities that you gather throughout a run, but there really aren't that many, every run essentially feels and plays the same.
The only goal is to win 8 times as to find all story endings, but there's nothing to keep you wanting to play, no interesting build combo's or upgrades that stack together to improve your build, it's just flat abilities and slight damage upgrades every run.
[b][h2]Achievements (37/37)[/h2][/b]I do not recommend achievement hunting RAD, it has some of the grindiest, most rng reliant achievements of any game I have played. Finding every single item and completing every npc task takes running through the stages just to be met with disappointment over and over. I am glad I am done.
[b][h2]Music/sound[/h2][/b]The game has a good amount of voice acting, endings are fully narrated, as well as random lore tidbits you are fed throughout runs.

I feel like I'm going crazy looking at the bad reviews. In what world is this a bad game? Just look at it! It's beautiful! It's fun! We didn't know how good we had it even just 5 years ago in the game industry...
I reaaaallllyyy want to recommend this game, but after experiencing the game loop, I find myself craving something the game will never deliver.
Not being a stranger to rogue-likes, I enjoyed the wonder of the game world initially. Exploring was fun. Then I started to find that after many unsuccessful runs, the town wasn't changing much and I kept getting the same abilities over and over. If there was a little more control over what you get, I would probably be writing a better review, but after coming to the conclusion that all characters are effectively the same and the things you do have control over don't vary enough, I find I just don't enjoy the game. The environment is also rather homogeneous and kind of just blends together after playing long enough.
The controls feel good once you get used to the physics. The audio is nice. The visuals are neat (until they're not(?)). There's a lot of fun silliness to see. It ultimately just didn't feel like I was building towards much with each run. Maybe you'll feel otherwise?
If you find the game on sale, buy it. Don't expect a riveting story, I'd recommend maybe doing an hour or two, then putting it down to avoid burn out.
Rogelite infravalorado donde los haya, y divertido como el que más. Infinidad de builds, cada una más loca que la anterior. Combate divertido, satisfactorio. Apartado visual y artístico único. Música acojonante. Se nota el cariño de los desarrolladores en la atención al detalle. Es desafiante y tiene un sistema de banco de pasta que te permite empezar con algunas ventajas a medida que juegas y mueres. No lo he completado aún, de hecho me queda bastante (solo he desbloqueado 1 final de 9) pero ya solo por haber amortizado la pasta, debo recomendarlo por los pocos jugadores que tiene. No me lo explico; ¿es que os da miedo convertiros en un murciélago-cangrejo en llamas?

Story habe ich vergessen, irgendwas mit Welt kaputt, geh raus in die verstrahlte, verseuchte Wildnis und mach was platt oder so.
Der gute, spaßige Part dabei ist, das mit dem Aufleveln man Mutationen bekommt. Man hat also keine freie Wahl an Skills zum freischalten sondern bekommt Zufalls- Fähigkeiten.
Die reichen von resistenzen über mehr Lebensenergie bis hin zu Fernangriffen.
Da ist einiges dabei.
Man macht in einem areal also ein paar Viecher platt, aktiviert eine vorgegebene Anzahl an Türmen um den Bossraum zu öffnen, macht einen Boss platt und geht zum nächsten Areal.
Also warum Daumen nach unten, wenn alles funktioniert.
In den 4h hatte ich gerade mal 2 Läufe die "okay" waren.
Das hängt natürlich mal wieder mit dem mieserablen und bekifften Zufallsgenerator ab.
Wie, du brauchst Lebensenergie? Nee, die gibt es in diesem Lauf extremst selten.
Was? Du hast hier im ersten Level eine Tür/ Truhe zu öffnen, für die du die nötige anzahl an Schlüsseln nicht hast? Sorrry, sieht der Zufallsgenerator nicht vor.
Du könntest eine Fernkampfmutation gebrauchen? Ahhh, ich denke die bekommst du erst einmal nicht.
Auch echt klasse: Es wird der See wohl im Pausenmenü angezeigt, aber natürlich scheint man diesen nirgends eingeben zu können.

For players who like The Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon and Nuclear Throne - This is a cool, quirky roguelike, with a distinct quasi-celshadded style. Mutations and quirks make the runs, that are already procedurally generated, a nice spice.
Give it a try. RAD was 2 years on my backlog and wish I would've played sooner.

Чёткий, классный, топовый, сасный. Времена меняются и приносят свои панегирики, но суть остаётся неизменной: будь крут, выделяйся, гордись, что ты не такой.
Есть что-то подростково притягательное в том, чтобы почивать на лаврах, достигнув цели только в своей голове. Ты хорош уже потому, что придумал план и нафантазировал свой успех и достижения. Дофамин получен, ты красавчик.
То, что в жизни ведёт к стагнации, в игре развлекает и веселит. Бум-бдыщ-бах, противники разлетаются, ты смеёшься. Неоновые вывески, сел-шейдинг и анонсеры из 80-х выходят на первый план, история остаётся за кадром.
А нужна ли она, когда есть просто забег по джунглям апокалипсиса? Там, где Бордерлендс брал харизматичными персонажами и юморными квестами, Rad отказывается показывает средний палец, выставляет напоказ яркий кислотный ирокез и натягивает дерматиновую куртку в заклёпках, отказываясь погружаться в детали.
Не ищи смысл там, где его нет. Подростку не нужна логика и последовательность, так зачем она здесь тебе, дед? Это дерзость, это молодость, это прощается (и со временем, проходит). Главное, не гни пальцы иначе, чем в «козу», не порть момент. Расслабься, никто не узнает, что ты не смог завершить свой ран, получай удовольствие от простых вещей.
Ну а если хочется большей вариативности и деталей – дуй по другому адресу. Туда, где конформистам вроде тебя подают один и тот же фломастер с разными цветами и колпачками. Бери их и называй свои каляки-маляки иммерсив-френдли опытом с возможностью достигать тридцать три цели разной степени унылости и чувствовать себя победителем. Хотя постойте-ка…

I didn't find any bugs, no weird issues, the setting and set pieces are distinct and consistent. Which means after a few runs you learn what all the doodads in the levels do. And for a game that requires a LOT of backtracking, the addition of the foilage trail mechanic (Your character leaves a trail of grass and other living matter, which makes you move much faster when walking on it) is a great QOL feature.

[*] [b] Lack of Content [/b] -- Beyond the actual gameplay of fighting, gaining RADs and mutating, there really isn't much in the way of things to do. There aren't many side quests to update, upgrade or change the starting town. There aren't a variety of quests to hold your attention. Most of the enemy, setting and art content in the game is copy-pasted from level to level (for example, you have to get through 3 levels to get to the end boss... but you have to repeat each level at least twice per run. Why not just have 5 unique levels instead?)
Even the mutations are pretty limited. Judging by the Mutation Notebook, you'd think there were hundreds of mutations, but each one actually has 3 different strengths which are listed separately... exaggerating and obscuring the number of new mutations you can actually find.
[*] [b] Lack of Meaningful Persistent Systems [/b] -- There isn't much in the way of persistent upgrades. And the ones you do unlock are either marginally effective passive abilities, or semi-useful power ups that aren't worth saving. The only mechanic that matters (saving currency in a mobile bank system) can be quickly progressed until money is not even a concern in later runs. I guess this makes the game VERY rogue like, not rogue-like. Right?
[*] [b] Lack of Meaningful Choice [/b] -- Each run is nearly completely random. You don't choose which mutations you'll level into, nor can you see what mutations are given by the various items you find per level. You can't choose what items will appear in the shop or in the levels. And worst of all, you can't really change the mutations you get, even if you reload the level.
You do unlock quirks that are SUPPOSED to make certain types of mutations more likely, but I really didn't see much of a change.
[*] [b] Repetitive [/b] -- I've only put in about 44 hours at the time of writing after playing on and off for about 6 months. I really have no incentive to play besides 'finishing the game', because there are no interesting NPCs to help, the narrative isn't particularly strong and the lack of gameplay variety makes the game very repetitive and boring.
[*] [b] Kludgy Controls [/b] -- I'm not sure if it is the pacing, or hit boxes, or whatever, but playing on a controller (which is probably the ideal way to play) did not feel super precise. The control responsiveness was almost slow and changing direction wasn't immediate, you kind of lean into turns. Which is fine, since most enemies are also curiously slow... so it wasn't a disadvantage per se. It just made the action very paced and tame.

This game is clearly made with quality and care in mind. But it also seemed like there wasn't much of a game to begin with, which was then copy-pasted ad nauseum. Every facet of the game is just a reskin of some other unique item in the game with very little variation. And judging by the fact that most achievements in the game were completed by less than 10% of players, I have to wonder if this was one of those games that has very little content and a whole lot of clever tricks to try to pad game time and content.
Overall, if you can get this game on super sale and you want a pleasant, casual game you can kill a few hours with, I would recommend getting it. But, if that's the case, there are a bunch of other, better roguelike games you could be playing. Played this initially for about 1 hour before deciding it wasn't for me. Fast forward 2 years and a Steamdeck investment - it's honestly one of my favourite games in my library. Despite only playing 16 hours, it feels like I've played much more of this. It's rouge like style suits very well the Steam Deck, and occupys the space smoking did for me. If i've got 15 minutes spare... might as well fire up the deck and have a quick go on Rad.
Lots of variation through the many different mutations which occur throughout each play through adding variability to the game. Each level generated slightly different so no two games are the same. But the glue which holds it all together is the humour. Very much not in your face, very much suited to any Gen-X'r who experienced the 80s, hearing a completley unironic baritone annouce "baby needs some new shoes" when you pick up some currency never fails to raise a smile

No lo recomiendo, es muy repetitivo, le falta variedad de enemigos y de golpes. Si tuviera un sistema similar de golpes a un hack and slash, algo más de movilidad o simplemente las animaciones no fueran tan toscas sí que lo podría llegar a recomendar. Si lo encuentras por 3€ o menos no es mala opción para un rato pero ya digo que cansa. Tiene ideas muy buenas como lo de dejar el rastro de pasto por donde vas para cuando vuelvas a pasar por el mismo sitio vayas más rápido pero las buenas ideas son opacadas por sus claras carencias. A nivel visual si que he de decir que es muy bueno.
This is an absolutely terrible port of this game. Everything feels "off" from the xbox one version I spent 100+ hours with... Colors, hit detection, clarity, control, everything feels bad. Excellent game, a lot of fun, but feels awful to play this version of it.
it's got an art style. aside from that the runs are long and unrewarding. bosses are many varieties of mutant blob. like toys for tots. combat is loose. so loose you'll find it hard to hit your target. certain arenas change the camera angle and throw you off aiming and dodging. the character abilities are cool looking and in combination you are a true mutant (thanks to the technology) but will always be wildly ineffective thanks to the damage tuning and aforementioned looseness.
Pros: mutations are fun, world design is fantastic with fun lore drops, it was fun to explore and discover things in this world, and combat was fun. All in all, very fun to play, for a while.
Cons: I know this isn’t really a story based game, but the world and lore was interesting enough I started getting interested in the story development with each successful run. However, it ended up being a very lackluster story in the end. That was a bummer. The worst part was the RNG, though. It was annoying to end up with several successive runs with basically the same mutations, and it happened more often than what can be attributed to a random fluke. And I love getting all the achievements I can, but the Nerd achievement and the faction achievements are just frustrating as heck. I think I found only 2 of the 10 or more cave lore statues in the 80 or so hours I invested in the game. And these statues are only found in the caves in the middle two levels. I found so many empty rooms in caves like where the statues are supposed to spawn, but no statue spawned. I had similar bad luck with certain artifacts and never saw them in all of my playthroughs. I got lucky with 2/3 of the factions, but the Cathode Raiders just ended up giving me the same quests over and over again (I tried the tricks). I might only be one quest away from completing that achievement but I just can’t take it anymore. I’m throwing the towel in.
All in all, I recommend this game if you like these kind of games and if it’s on sale. The world and lore are fun, just don’t expect much from the overarching story. Play until you’re tired of it and move on - 80 hours of playing is easily twice as long as I should have played, in retrospect.

Rad
It's a rogue-like in the vein of Hades, and if you don't have Hades, you should probably get that instead.
That said, it's a fun action rogue-like. The aesthetic is pretty fantastic and it has a lot of variation in the powers and builds you can create. If you like the genre, and especially if it's on sale, I definitely recommend it. Below I get into some of the things I wasn't crazy about.
The pace of movement and combat is much slower than Hades, which makes runs feel quite long. I think my average runs are about an hour, but I think they feel a little longer than that.
Your mutations (power ups and weapons) are entirely random. Usually in this genre, you get to pick between multiple options, but here one is randomly assigned to you each time you level up. On the plus side, you're forced to adapt to the mutations and pushed out of your comfort zone on builds, which I like. On the other hand, you can end up with a funky build that will end your run prematurely. In the final area, having so much left to RNG seems particularly cruel, since there are zones that can replace one of your mutations with a faulty version if you remain in them too long. I encountered shops selling multiples of the same artifact, which is completely useless.
A minor note, it does run fine on Steam Deck, but it gets pretty hot and I was surprised at how quick my battery went down. Since the runs are an hour or so, I'll probably stick to playing on my desktop from now on.
In the end, if you like Double Fine and want a Double Fine flavored roguelike, or you dig the aesthetic, definitely check it out. I've gone through about 6 runs so far and haven't seen everything yet, and I'll likely play more. I doubt my opinion is going to change much as I keep going.
I have to back up my save to avoid losing my character each time I die. But the permutations of the mutations seem endless enough to keep the permadeath fun.
There's plenty to like about this game but it commits the rougelike sin of having RNG trumping skill. Your run can being going great and end by no fault of your own.
The two most common I encountered were bossing being basically immune to the random attack you were given, or a mutation(basically a level up) replacing your good upgraded attack with an attack that is both worse and upgraded.
This game is fun for the first couple of playthroughs but the levels grow old on repeated playthroughs. Which you will likely have to do due to the terribly implemented rougelike elements.

Good, but VERY frustrating, never gets easier, enemies are annoying, it doesn't feel like with all of your mutations you hit harder. You just get more health (if you are lucky), and/or environmental immunity.

pretty fun. though its got a very tiny dodge shield window. so its either you do it perfect or you get hurt. kinda brutal when your facing later levels but its pretty fun overall.

I like the neon look, but it hurts my eyes after a while. It's also really hard to see items on the ground.
The game itself is just kinda okay. Even the 80's look is bland somehow, and if you took that away I don't know what you'd have left. It's so strange that the game feels lifeless, even with a mechanic that mutates your characters in such an over the top way.
Maybe it's just that nothing feels original; everything's a copy of a different game or a different mechanic. XP is now Rads, and "leveling up" is "mutating." You get a power that turns your arm into fire, and it's just a simple ranged attack. Your head turns into a flaming skull, and it's just a grenade... Everything that could be interesting and unique is boring and standard.
More than lack of polish, there are some design flaws here, and probably too short of a development cycle.
I think the gravest flaw is how quickly it starts repeating familiar content: mutations, levels, enemies, upgrades and so on, again and again.
The cardboard NPCs, the useless narrator, and the weak and lacking "story", are surprising from a studio like Double Fine, who are extremely capable in these departments.
The core gameplay is certainly serviceable and can be fun when things get going, but even the basic moves and actions could use some tweaking. Turning the running speed up, having some animation cancelling like with dodges, making the basic enemies die to the basic 3-hit combo - things like these could make the core gameplay feel better quite easily.
Beyond that, the levels need to be scaled down a bit - especially underground areas which include too long hallways and staircases (Hades is brilliant to put you right in the action - cross the doorstep, and you're in) - it needs some tweaks to make things go faster. The "ground fertilizer" is a neat idea - ground you walked before makes you go faster over it the second time, but the speed is still not good enough for the size of the levels.
Beyond that, like mentioned before, although there seems to be a decent variety of mutations and it's fun that they level-up and improve, they unlock far too slowly over many runs. You end up on a repeat of familiar mutations too often and rarely see something new.
There's also no mutation or combo that made me feel "broken powerful", at least in my many hours of playing, like in the Binding of Issac fun way. Not that I would call this game difficult.
Your mutations are not useless, and it can be fun the first time you get something to learn to "make the best use" of it, but most of them feel a bit underwhelming.
Although I had a decent time with this and completed three full runs - it's hard to recommend this game. The third run was kind of a forced farewell run, as my motivation and enjoyment fell pretty quick and hard, due to the repetition. Even though it had 7-6 more endings to show me, I just didn't care anymore. The endings themselves are pretty basic slides and nothing interesting either.
Overall, though my expectations weren't very high, I still found RAD underwhelming.

A little disappointed.. it's not a bad game but it lacks variety, after a few hours it proves to be the same thing all the time. It would probably be enough to increase the content and variety in the monsters a little. The soundtrack clashes a bit with the game theme. At the moment I don't feel like recommending it, it's leaving me a bit bored. 5/10 my rating

RAD has a lot of good ideas. If it had come out a few years earlier, it would have seen more success. But in today's landscape of rogue-lites, it is easily outclassed by its competition.
Rad has a few standout qualities. Each run has decent variety in gameplay mechanics due to the mutation system. Depending on the mutations you randomly get, you have to think differently about how to move around the environment, avoid enemy attacks, and engage in combat effectively. It made for some great mental exercise when rewiring my muscle memory for each run. There are some cool environmental interactions, some hidden mechanics that reward game knowledge, and a couple neat synergies between mutations. The latter I never encountered though, because there's a pitifully small amount of them that actually interact. I also really liked Rad's approach to difficulty: rather than a traditional difficulty option, you could enable a "quirk" that altered the game rules in some way, making it harder or easier. I wish you could enable more than 1 at a time, however.
There's too much hampering Rad though. Players get little-to-no agency in their build choices, and are given abilities and powers almost completely at random. The bank system trivializes the game's shop economy, enabling you to buy everything all the time after a few runs. Runs are entirely too long for this genre, nearing 2 hours. Combat isn't as smooth as it should be, with clunky animations and poor movement. The game is framed with an 80's post-apocalyptic-punk theme which, while visually pleasing to look at, was dreadfully boring and cringeworthy. The writing thinks it's funny when it's just juvenile. The hub is too static, with not enough to interact with or do. There weren't any common goals to reach for over multiple runs. There's a shop there too that has pretty miserable stock options, even after you upgrade it. Finally, each run has a lot of fluff to it. There are rooms with teleporters that skip the boss fight, but you'd never want to take it because the boss fight gives upgrades. There aren't enough resource sinks for money and keys later on. Most of my runs ended with 5-10 keys, despite opening all the chests and doors.
There may have been a time in the past I recommended RAD, but in today's rogue-lite landscape it doesn't off anything others aren't doing better. Even at a discount I was having a hard time making it worth my time.
Stylized to be 80s apocalypse rogue-like, Rad provides action compact adventure as a teen destined to become a mutated monster for the sake of humanity.
There are many different combinations of mutations that you can play around with, a niche game that you either love or hate. Great sound track and interesting map designs.
Too many problems makes it not so desirable to play.
It seemed to me that this game would be much more fun and interesting to play. The trailer and screenshots inspired hope for interesting gameplay, but in the end the game turned out to be boring. I'm disappointed.

Как-то раз, просматривая каталог Steam, наткнулся я на "RAD" только благодаря скриншотам (мультяшный дизайн мне зашёл) и разработчикам "Double Fine Productions" Тима Шейфера. Будучи уверен, что передо мной квест (т.к. Double Fine я знал на тот момент именно по ним), в сентябре 2021 года прикупил я себе ключ, а к игре приступил лишь летом 2023 года. Поняв, что передо мной рогалик (точнее, rogue-lite, оказуаленный рогалик), первое время был немного разочарован, т.к. такой жанр мне не вкатывает, но решил для себя опробовать что-то новое.
Раз за разом перепроходя уровни и дойдя до босса лишь 2-3 раза за почти 25 ч прохождения (и проиграв ему все эти разы), я просто устал, устал то монотонности и скуки, и именно такие чувства меня посещали всё чаще и чаще во время очередных забегов.
К сожалению, кроме как "мультяшного" дизайна, в игре больше ничего интересного нет.

Вот тебе разные типы дубинок, но фактически, это одна и та же, просто у одной есть пассивка с молниями, а у остальных - нет, т.е. ни новых анимаций, ни новых возможностей, - ничего нет. Вроде бы размер, наполнение локаций меняются рандомно, но фактически, в каждых главах их набор одинаков, а изменение содержания настолько минимально, что в какой-то момент твой актуальный забег практически не отличается от предыдущих. Вроде бы тут разные типы врагов, но на деле, лишь боссы худо-бедно меняются, а типы врагов жёстко прикреплены к главам, а в зависимости от забега меняется лишь их количество на локациях.
[*][b]Зачем тут хаб?[/b] По факту, кроме магазина, "огорода" и получения пары достижений, он тут просто не нужен. Да, он наполнен персонажами, но с ними нет каких-либо взаимодействий.
[*][b]Способности.[/b] Тут уже вкусовщина, но всё же. Для нормального прохождения подходят лишь те способности, которые позволяют бить на расстоянии, и крылья, а всё остальное - в утиль, т.к. в какой-то момент, будучи на последних уровнях, где разнообразных врагов много, ловушек тоже, аптечек мало, а впереди ещё пара локаций до финального босса, то бить на расстоянии - самое то. Да и самих способностей не сказать, что много, т.к. по ощущениям, при апгрейдах в половине случаев вам будут даваться пассивки, в другой половине - сами способности.
[*][b]Сильный рандом.[/b] Я прекрасно понимаю, что это рогалик, но тут какой-то сильный разброс от крайне удачного до хренового забега: тут или попадётся хороший набор способностей, либо будет попадаться какая-то хрень, при получении которой которой можно рестартить игру. И честно, что-то среднее мне не попадалось.

В общем и целом, "RAD" вызвала у меня, скорее, смешанные эмоции, но к сожалению, спустя десятки забегов (а то немного) у игры заканчивается вариативность: локации сильно не будут отличаться на протяжении всех забегов, враги на них +- одни и те же, самих способностей не так много, а действительно действенных (на мой взгляд) ещё меньше, и оружие, фактически, только одно. Очень быстро настаёт момент, когда игре нечего тебе больше предлагать, а играть ради концовок... Ну я посмотрел их на Youtube, и могу сказать, они не стоят того, а лор тут не прям интересный.
It was a fun game. Unfortunately it was a little lackluster for content in terms of a roguelike. I tried to really 100% everything in this game but it is just a little tedious and a little bland.
Still worth it if you get it on sale, the 80s aesthetic is super cheesy and wonderfully fun. It's perfect in that regard, but it gets a little stale, and doesn't have the longevity of other roguelikes.
Стильная и забавная аркада-рогалик. На стандартном уровне сложности излишне суровая и напряжная, но если поставить в настройках повышенное здоровье и урон, игра становится вполне весёлой. Особенно когда попадаются новые мутации, требующие нового стиля игры.

I really, really wanted to like this game. I bought it (on sale) despite the mixed reviews, because I wanted to see for myself.
It looks great, the concept is great, the theme is cool. [b]But the main thing about it - the combat - just doesn't feel good.[/b] Yes, I'm not far into the game, yes, you get more stuff later, but I almost don't feel like there's a reason to try and get to that point. It's difficult, and not in the fun way.
