Thought it would be a great game. Unfortunately, every 5-6 turns it needs to be restarted and the time it needs to go to the next turn is way longer than playing itself. Interface is really hard to use, using left mouse only results in returning problems with switching between modes. Moreover, it's really hard to click on the right stuff sometimes (in diplomacy or with fleets in ports). Units symbols are too huge for the map, so the icons of land units can be found in other provinces or even in the middle of the sea (and the player is forced to check the unit position every single time). The game has loads of indicators, but plenty of them are useless, as player has no influence on them. There's a whole research tree, but there's barely nothing you can do with it but scrolling a looong list of items.
I tried to play the great campaign (since 1850), and had to give up in ~1866. Finishing the campaing will take me a year of constant playing.
It's a pity, as the game is based on a great idea, but it is overcomplicated for itself. I'd gladly return to the game, but it has to be fixed first.
There are some interesting mechanics, but the interface is horrible, the turns are very slow, AI assist is almost non existent, and generally the game does a bad job at conveying what important things you should be working towards at a given time. In a world where we have both Victoria 2 and Victoria 3, this is comfortably skip-able.

Truly a great game that needs a second edition and maybe a earlier start date and end date... honestly one of a kind and for its time was very impressive. Yes slow turns but ultimately a deep and complex strategy game that needs to go deeper and more complex to be a viable successor(if they do PoN2).
This is the deepest and most comprehensive grand strategy game from this era. And contrary to Victoria 2 it is manageable on all levels. You probably need to play some 150-200 turns to get the full understanding but when you do, you will have a heck of a time for months.
I own the game, and all dlcs, it's just utter bad, bad systems, very bad turn time, very bad replayability, there is just nothing good at all about it, except that i only paid like 3e? for the whole pack back in the day, and yeah it never got performance fixed, AI is utterly braindead, it's 0 fun, a typical slitherine publishing game, over priced and low quality and absolutely horrible graphics, without any AI worth a darn
I would love to play this game.

Pride of Nations is a flawed game, but also a good game that is deserving of a sequel. Most gamers' will draw comparisons to Victoria 2. Pride of Nations always does something amazing then it feels unfinished or not fully tested. For example, the level of military unit detail is incredible. You have land and naval commanders that have specific traits and command limits. The amount of units you can build in both Corps, Divisions, and Brigades is truly impressive. Your army feels real. However, moving it is brutal and punishing, far more than it needs to be. Attrition is a major factor every time you move somewhere. And while attrition is a real thing, you are taking on the role of a King, President, or Emperor. It can reasonably be assumed that you have Generals and staff that supply the army so you can actually use it without losing half your men moving in a turn.
Economic development with provinces is some of the best I've ever seen in a game of this type. You can see the tremendous benefits that railroads bring a country. As an economic simulation of 19th century Europe, this is a lot more fun than say, Victoria 3. However, you don't exist within in a vacuum and this is where the game breaks down again. Politics are lackluster. There are supposed to be "hot spot" events, but you never seem to generate them and interactions with neighboring countries is generic. Worse, the scripted events don't work. I was playing as Russia and the Crimean War triggered without any build up or decisions to it, one turn France, England, and Turkey simply declared war on me. Alright, fine, I fight an exceedingly good campaign getting France to bow out early and turning the Black Sea into a Russian lake. I eliminate the entire British BEF, and am making slow but steady inroads into the Ottoman Empire when another scripted event takes place saying the war is over. I get no territorial concessions and had two armies destroyed because they were on Ottoman territory and couldn't be supplied once control of zones reverted back to the Ottomans. I had no chance to even negotiate a peace nor would I have agreed to one at that time without compensation because I was winning!
After 30 hours of game play, I feel that's decent value for the game when you get it on sale. There are fun elements, but the lack of finish shows up and makes it difficult to imagine someone completing all the turns in a grand campaign. The AI moves between turns takes a while so 30 hours into the game I was in 1854 (start in 1850) and the game goes through 1918. I might try the game again at some point as the United States and see how it functions simulating up to the Civil War. However, I'm hesitant to put in the time because of the scripted nature of the Crimean War an unsatisfactory feeling I got without having any input into the peace conference terms. Maybe I'm just used to a Hearts of Iron type of peace.
Worth playing? Yes. Not a hidden gem, but certainly a game that had some potential.
The game seems good in general, but the turns take so long that it's basically unplayable. It ruins what seems like would otherwise be a fantastic competitor to Victoria 2 (which is superior to Victoria 3 anyway)
This is not a polished game at all, but there is no better simulator of late industrial revolution + realpolitik. I keep returning to this game like a madman)
If your into serious strategy, long games with the best realistic technologies and detailed (including pictures of allot of it) This game is one I have played off and on for years and I only wish they would make a PON II. It is turn based and you won't finish a game in one day, so patience and long term strategy is what your in for.
Do you want to hop in the seat of the USA, British Empire, Japan, China etc when the industrial revolution started and guide your development, research and global goals for the next 70 years... the game is a must have.
The same company makes many turn based super indepth streategy games and I think they are the best at technical support and working on details for years after they make a game. This game came out years ago and I could still go on their forums and get a reply from one of the developers usually in a day.
Couldn't say more positive things about the copany or the game ... but if you have a short attention span or hate strategically thinking and patience the game just wouldnt suit you.
Ive also got the Original Cival War game as well as the Cival War II they did... havent played the Cival War II yet but seems much the same. They won me over with that first game with histories and actual pictures of most every real general in the war and all the attention to detal.

A good AGEOD game. However, there are better AGEOD games out there that are easier to grasp and can keep your enjoyment levels always full.
EDIT: PBEM completely changes how PON feels, so I can fully recommend it as long as it is PBEM.

I'd recommend this game only to a certain rare type of gamer--the kind with a great deal of patience and a love of history (especially this period of history). This is not a game to just pick up and play casually. It requires study (beginning with a close reading of the manual, but not ending there, since not everything is in the manual). It also requires a big time commitment (say a couple years to complete the full campaign). And then it requires attentive, methodical play. There are shorter scenarios that could be enjoyed with less effort, but the game system shines in campaign mode, playing on the world map. Frankly, I bit off more than I could chew when I bought this game. I'm impressed with it; it's a real gem. But I may never play it again. I'm just not the right kind of gamer for it and don't have enough time. I'd still heartily recommend it, though, with the above caveats, even though it has some flaws and was never developed to its full potential.
Es gibt so Spiele, die lassen Einen fassungslos zurück. Z.B. weil man, ums Verrecken, einfach nicht kapiert, Was da eigentlich gerade passiert, oder , weil der schiere Umfang selbst erfahrene Spieler komplett überfordert. Ja, gegen PRIDE OF NATIONS ist selbst CIV6 das reinste Casual-Game. Nun wäre Umfang selbst ja nicht mal schlecht, aber das Spiel weiß mit seiner Tiefe Nichts. aber auch rein gar Nichts anzufangen und wirft den Spieler in die Zeit von 1850 bis 1920, torpediert ihn mit Menüs, Untermenüs, bunten Kartenfiltern und fitzligen, kaum zu erkennenden Symbolen. Eine Runde dauert 15(!!) Tage und so zieht sich das Ganze über 1650 (!!!!) Runden hin, eine Distanz , die sich, vermutlich, kein Spieler der Welt antun wird. Dabei hat PRIDE OF NATIONS einige ganz nette Ideen, die Krisenbewältigung in Form eines Kartenspiels z.B.
Als Staatenlenker einer großen Nation ( Preußen, Italien, Österreich...z.B) hat der Spieler die Aufgabe in den 70 Jahren Spielzeit seiner Nation zu großen Ruhm zu verhelfen. Kriege oder Kolonialerorberung könnten helfen. Doch die anderen Nationen haben das selbe Ziel. Ich gebe Es zu, ich hab dem Spiel schon mehrere Chancen gegeben, und schon des Öfteren versucht, hinter das Geheimnis dieses Strategie-Ungetüms zu kommen, doch der teilweise unfertige und chaotische Look, die komplizierten und unüberschaubaren Menüs haben mich nach 10 Runden, ( also knapp 5 Monaten) immer wieder vertrieben. Das, aus dem selben Hause stammende VICTORIA 2, ist die bessere Alternative, deckt Es doch fast die selbe Epoche ab. Aber auch Victoria 2 wirkt gegen diesen pottenhäßlichen Strategie-Brocken wie ein Handy-Game. Wer Lebenszeit übrig hat, keine Hobbys, keinen Job und auch sonst keine Verpflichtungen kann 15 Jahre seines Lebens mit diesem Spiel verbringen, alle Anderen werden Es vermutlich eher nicht.

[b]I strongly do not recommend this game[/b] - you'll lose both your time and nerves, no matter how much you would like the concept of potential of the game. This game had huge potential. But it is botched in so many ways, that it is just not worth it. Maybe only if you plan to develop similar game, go check it out.
I have several pages of things that I dislike about Pride of Nations, here are few most important of them:
- wait time between turns - on my i5-6600K running at 4.7 GHz, this game capable running on just 1 core is taking 3-6 minutes to calculate 1 single turn in the early game (was about a minute in the very beginning, year 1850). In 50+ hours in this game I've been able to progress from year 1850 to 1856. Campaign ends in 1920. Okay, I was doing other stuff about half the time, as you are not able to do anything in the game during the wait time. But even if you can accept that you play a turn, then do other stuff in your real or virtual life, the game is still not worth it because the list only begins:
- crashes - game crashed to desktop many times without apparent reason
- clunky UI - mouse movement is delayed, map scrolling with mouse is a nightmare, drag & drop system is very inconsistent especially with moving and merging units and there are UI elements which were not implemented in the game - like message importance or loans + many other issues with the UI
- dis-balanced overcomplexity with incomplete manual or tooltips - I've read the whole manual of the game, all the guides and I still did not understood why some options are missing to me, or why I cannot do. Or issues like militancy being described as a huge issue, when I have it at max level in all my national regions, without a real way to lower it and without any negative effects from that.. etc. etc.
- missing any ledgers or easy ways to view known/important information about the world, other countries etc.
- historical/geographical non-senses despite the game aiming to be very historically accurate - like region Slowakei without any Slovak population, or region with Troppau (Opava) without any Czech population.. and many other..
- messy messages - there are way too many messages each turn to read all, with no priority levels, and no filter on which are relevant to your nation.
So sorry to say that, but this game was my biggest dissapointment, also because of high hopes and some really enthusiastic reviews I've seen on the web. And because I love games on world maps, especially grand strategies. And because it has so many great mechanics and so much potential... [strike]And it might not take too much to fix it in my eyes.. [/strike] no sorry, it is unfixable without great effort.. I was just typing out list of easy fixes, but many of them are not easy, and yes there are many of them and just the code optimization is not feasible to make it at least 10x faster to be playable. And even 10x shorter waiting times are still too long, so...
I would love to see someone take concept of this game and maybe mix it with Victoria 2, let multiple historical start dates be available and ideally make it possible to play until modern era of 21st century. That would be a fantastic game to play.
A highly complex and flawed gem of a grand strategy game. It being an AGEOD game it almost plays like a boardgame, with the computer taking care of all of the under the hood computations.
Do I recommend this? Yes, but...
- You really need to have a lot of patience.
- You need to be interested in history.
- Be ready to figure out everything by yourself.
- Be prepared to sink your teeth in a hardcore, complex game.
Just by reading the above, most people will have decided not to play this game. Yet you're still reading this, so congratulations and let me explain why this is such a good game.
In the grand campaign you get to play through seventy years of world history split up into two week turns (15 actually), which amounts to 1680 turns! Colonialism, industrialisation, the forming of nation states, the birth of modern armies and much more is present in this game. There is simply no game with this broad of a scope and timeframe that somehow goes into all of these 'details'. The game gives you a lot of options and freedom to build up your nation. You could focus on gaining colonies and remaining mostly neutral in the messy wars in Europe. You could also bolster the economy of your homeland, export your comodities and become an economic juggernaut. You can also go the diplomatic way and navigate the precarious web of treaties. Or you can wield your armies and invade friend and foe. Ultimately you'll probably mix it up and do a bit of everything, but depending on your nations' situation some of the above might not be advisable or even possible.
Though maybe a bit dated looking by todays standards I find the map appealing, the UI apropriately styled and the army and unit counters are nice to look at. The different units give a lot of character to the game, as each unit has a picture showing their distinctive uniforms or military material. Every nation has its own unitforms and depending on what parts of the world you control you get different units. You have your standard units, but specific units like the Gurka's, French Foreign Legion, Cossacks, and many more are also present. And to top it off, all these units' appearance and performance change throughout the years.
Now one thing that almost kills this game: the loading times... my god the loading times. I bought the game just about when it came out ten years ago. Back then it actually took multiple minutes of waiting in between turns, as the computer calculates basically every decision of every nation and every move of every unit acros all of the world. This would only become worse once you progressed through the game, as so many things started happening at once and these all needed to be computed. It led me to give up on the game and it lay dormant for many years in my library. I always knew this game had potential, so recently I gave it another shot. By now the load times are manageable, but still kind of long. Sometimes up to a minute in between turns.
Lastly the game is difficult and the UI, though I like the aesthetic, doesn't help. It being an old niche game means the community is almost none existant, so getting questions answered in forums is not going to be easy. To the manual then, which is decent, but also left me with some unanswered questions. So basically you've got to learn the game by yourself, by playing it and really sinking your teeth in it. Luckily there are just about 1680 turns to get it right!
In the end Pride of Nations is a game that must be played like the way you would savour a good whiskey. Take your time, let all of its different aspects slowly seep in and enjoy the moment.
It is so slow its unplayable.
I highly recommend the Sepoy Mutiny campaign. Very challenging.
2021 short review:
This is a good game, the UI is not so bad and the flavor of the day is there! Even the somewhat lenghty turns are not so long on a good machine (per '21 standards), however it started crashing repeatdely around 20h in and upon loading another save to see if that can help "unjam" the savegame, it just wiped out clean my 20h savegame...so yeah a thumbs down as technical limits we can deal with but not with technical showstoppers.
Too bad cuz it's a gem...
Huge game. Favours the patient player. In multiplayer, you need your colleagues to stay within the spirit of the era - accept small wars that exchange provinces rather than playing total war.

As with the rest of this series from AGEOD, the learning curve for this game is rather steep, particularly as this is a detailed economic as well as military simulation, but it is well worth the time investment. The simulation of the time period is well-done and evocative, the AI is a credible opponent, and I particularly like the lovely board game-like unit cards and artwork. The UI definitely takes some getting used to, but I already understood the military, logistical, and events systems from playing To End All Wars, so for me it was really just a matter of learning the economic and political aspects. This is a deep and complex game and isn't for everyone, but if you're looking for a deep simulation of the 1850-1920 period, this is a very solid title, and one which I believe deserves an eventual sequel on AGEOD's new engine.

It's just rubbish, I thought when I bout it that my old computer might be the problem, now with a new high-end gaming machine.... aaand.. still doesn't run properly
I bought the game a while ago and found it incomprehensible and gave up. This time I gave it more time and found it initially rewarding, even though at 10-15 minute wait per turn was common. Eventually the frequent crashes, slowness and unrealistic game play has put me off. Nations can go rogue and conquer great swathes of the world, as everyone else sits by, enemy units float in place after being defeated and armies seemingly walk through your defensive positions. This game had great potential, but it is poorly executed. I am so disappointed, I loved Ageod's Civil War.
I love AGEOD games, and I tried hard to like this one, but the turn processing times are just too long, especially considering that on many turns there is little to do before hitting the next turn button again. It's a shame, because there would be a great game here if it were optimized for modern computers.
Fun game, a lot like the Victoria series in it's theme and concepts but in execution its a much deeper and interesting game. The turn based nature of the game may not be for everyone and if you're one of those midwits who hate gameplay and love looking at green graphs while painting the map. The game is not AGEOD's best but its definitely one of their most ambitious as it set out to cover much more than just warfare like their other classic titles. Definitely recommend, especially over the total garbage that Paradox is making now lol.

Game is slooooooooow. There are many bugs and errors like images not showing. The interface is unspeakably complicated.
The base idea of the game is good but they complicated it to the point where it is simply incomprehensible and unenjoyable.

Quite a fun but complicated game depicting the Imperialism of Victorian era. The short war campaign are pretty fun to play.
Overall I would recommend this game. Still has some bug issues and some mistakes in event coding but the overall gameplay works. You can avoid all the problems by playing the 1880 campaign but I feel it disingenuous to basically tell someone the game is perfect as long as you only play the DLC. Overall 7/10.
LOVE IT!! Amazing program ahead of its time in 2011. Now with newer and faster machine runs like a charm. IMHO the best AGEOD game on the market. The UI takes a little to get the hang of but within 30 min your playing decently. Review the manual and read a couple of AAR and you're off to the races. This game probably encompasses several AGEOD games within it. Definite buy!
Really great game. Depth of your average AGEOD game (w/ even more elements to handle) but with gameplay that spans an era (as opposed a simple conflict) and a map that covers the entirety of the world (w/o the dreaded off-map boxes). Does it go well beyond the laymen's heads? yes, yes it does. But in their defense, it is by far the most difficult AGEOD game to understand and play.
this game is beyond ridiculous, it's imbecilic and pretentious with an endless glut of information and tedious unnecessary complexity. You will also need a magnifying glass to read all the fine print.

I can't even get it to start on a 5 years old laptop, let alone on a new generation pc. It arrives to one of the many loading screen and then becomes unresponsive.
I hate this type of review, but I really can't say anything more, and I'm not wasting more of my time scouring the Internet and the game's forum in search of a solution when the producer can't be bothered with making the game playable - especially since I've seen several other reviews complaining about the same problem, so I'm not even the exception.

Ожидание хода 1-2 минуты, причем вам иногда нужно будет просто скипнуть 5-10 ходов, например, чтобы дождаться постройки кораблика, это 15-20 минут РЕАЛЬНОГО времени, где вы будете просто ждать и даже не сможете альт-табнуться, чтобы посмотреть фильм (игра падает при альт+табе с вероятностью 25%). В основной кампании 1800 ходов (на каждый вы потратите около 5 минут, т.е. кампания займет 150 часов, из которых до половины времени будет ожидание) и чем дальше, тем дольше будет "думать" компьютер на загрузке процессора в 15% и используемой памяти 10% - игра просто технически никакая, и не поддерживает мультитрейдин и мультикор. С помощью некоторых танцев с бубнами можно уменьшить лаги прокрутки карты и залипания интерфейса, это в 2018 году с intel i5 и 8Gb оперативы! Можно брать только если у вас есть дополнительная жизнь, которую вы потратите на эту игру.

it is an absolute steal at the price... if you manage to catch it on sale don't hesitate!
This is about the most amazing game I’ve yet encountered. No other game has the scope or depth that this country simulator has. It’s a shame that due to that same complexity that AGEOD seems not inclined to make more of its type.
If they were to make another game of this type, I think they could increase sales with more step by step tutorials and more detailed initial game play examples – to help folks get practical hands-on and see the results on the associated in-game systems (economics, colonial management etc).
AGEOD – please consider doing another game like this and working on the UI / tutorials in order to make it more accessible and not as intimidating to normal gamers.
It would be a shame if this masterpiece never had a successor …

I was unsure about getting this game due to all the negative reviews, however the game runs fine for me (Windows10), its been completley fixed since release, and i felt that id better give this game a postive review, since it is weighed down by outdated reviews. The game is brillant, but does require patience.

Not recommended. Very colorful, good music, and lots of historical research went into this game, but I have to agree with other negative reviews. Seems overly complex to manage, the units and facilities on the map are very difficult to find and to get a hold of. Moving troops seems to duplicate their image icon on the map (not a good idea!) with a start and finish location but try doing this with a few units in one province and you just loose track of what you are doing to whom. The game has a clunky feel to the entire UI, and it just seems too unusual to get used to. Finally, as has been said elsewhere, you must wait too long for turns to complete. I clocked over one minute and I was just starting the game. This is going to get worse as there will eventually be more and more happening with AI nations and units doing battles and moving around. Can not recommend it.

Really a shame how a design flaw in the game engine ruined This excellent victorian era turn based grand strategy game, if waiting 3 to 5 min for the AI to process its turn does not turn you off then this is an excellent game by all standards.
Wieder ein Beispiel für eine gute Spielidee bzw. ein schönes und scheinbar durchdachtes Konzept, was aber an der Umsetzung scheitert!
Dieses Spiel ist seit 2011 auf Steam - aber leider hat man auch heute 2017 noch das Gefühl ein Beta-Tester zu sein.
Man hat den Eindruck, mit Erscheinen des Spiels wurden vom Hersteller sämtliche Entwickler von dem Projekt abgezogen. Trotz mehrerer Updates ist es nach 6 Jahren noch immer nicht gelungen, massive Fehler aus den Infotexten und Nachrichten im Spiel zu elimieren.
Ganz abgesehen von einem Mischmasch verschiedener Sprachen und dem mehrfach auftauchenden "Null" als Nachrichtentext erscheinen Meldungen zu Staaten, die offenbar vorgesehen sind, die es aktuell aber gar nicht gibt. Da hat Grossbritannien plötzlich einen Kriegsgrund gegen Schottland, obwohl dieses zu dem Zeitpunkt Teil des Empire ist. Unter der großen Menge solcher und ähnlich sinnloser Meldungen, gehen wirklich wichtige Informationen unter - wie z.B. eine Kriegserklärung an einen Verbündeten. Man verliert dann Prestige weil man versämt dem angegriffenen Partner zur Hilfe zu kommen. Sowas ist einfach nur ärgerlich.
Auch scheinen die offenbar vorgeplanten historischen Ereignisse nicht richtig zu funktionieren. Man erhält zwar Meldungen, aber hat dann nicht die dadurch angekündligen Handlungsoptionen.
Das Militärsystem ist unüberichtlich. Man kann zwar Armeen selbst zusammenstellen, verklickt sich aber allzuoft durch die unübersichtliche Darstellung der Truppen auf der Karte. Die Eigenschaften der Einheiten werden zwar ausgewiesen, sind aber letztendlich in ihrer tatsächlichen Wirkung schwer einzuschätzen.
Die diplomatischen Optionen sind leider zu beschränkt. Ausser Krieg und Frieden und gegenseitiger Wege- oder Nachschubrechte gibt es kaum etwas zu bewirken. Man kann Beziehungen leicht verbessern oder verschlechtern, aber schon bei der einizigen weiteren Option - dem Wirtschaftsabkommen, lässt sich kaum eine Wirkung feststellen. Eigentlich sagt das (ebenfalls unfertige!) Handbuch, ein solches Abkommen würde Auslandsinvesititonen schützen. Aber die KI verstaatlicht die teuer erkauften Produktionsbetriebe auch in Ländern mit denen man ein solches Abkommen hat. Hier sollte man dann zumindest einen Kriegsgrund für solch einen Vertragsbruch erhalten oder eine diplomatische Krise auslösen können.
Denn sowhol das Wirtschaftssystem als auch das Krisenmanagement sind an sich sehr vielversprechende Elemente dieses Spieles. Gerade die Möglichkeit, heimisches Kapital in Übersee zu investieren ist ja ein wichtiges Merkmal dieser Epoche der damalige "Globalisierung". Und auch die Idee, eskalierender Krisen und deren Lösung oder nicht-Lösung in internationalen Konferenzen gehört in diese Zeit. Leider ist aber auch das Krisen-Handling allzu schematisch geraten.
Von den guten Elementen am ehesten erhalten geblieben ist dagegen das Kolonialspiel mit einer Vielfalt an Handlungsmöglichkeiten. Hier bleibt als einziger Wunsch die Übersichtlichkeit ein wenig auf der Strecke. Aber das ist ja leider ein Grundproblem, das sich durch das ganze Spiel zieht.
Fazit: Gute Idee(n) aber leider nicht zu Ende umgesetzt. Leider hat man nach 6 Jahren auch nur noch wenig Hoffnung, dass hier nachgebessert wird. Wenn die wirklich ärgerliche Flut unnützer oder sogar falscher Meldungen nicht wäre, gäbe es für das Spiel zumindest die Empfehlung, es im Sonderangebot zu kaufen. Aber so handelt man sich mehr Frust als Spass ein. Dann doch lieber das Konkurrenzprodukt "Victoria".
[b]Stability[/b]
That's quite possibly the most important issue here. This game used to be completely unplayable (a few years back), with turns lasting up to 10 minutes. Fortunately, the devs have fixed this entirely and the game runs really smooth, much better than many of the old AGEOD games do. Turns don't last more than 30-40 seconds for me which is very good, considering how many nations there are in the Grand Campagin.
[b]Features[/b]
I haven't played this for quite a while, despite purchasing it a few years back, and I'm astonished. Overall, just now it feels even better than Victoria II, for several reasons:
1. The military matters are done in a much better way. There are a lot of different kinds of units, historical commanders, detailed system of simulating the outcome based on a good and tested engine, which includes a lot of different factors that affect the result.
2. The colonization system is superb. There are a lot of possibilities including the different kinds of expeditions - anthropological, geographical, natural society, military expeditions etc. Even things such as gunboat diplomacy and naval demonstrations of force are included which is amazing. You can even bribe the local chieftains or force them to cede their territories. Apart from that you can also send your merchants, missionaries, establish trading posts, build road/telegraph networks, and in the end send immigrants and build a proper colony there. Something like this has never been done that well in a video game and I simply love it.
3. Economy is done quite well, with a lot of different structures for you to build. Sure, I would prefer it if the civilians were building them themselves according to the supply/demand but it's good enough.
4. There are a lot of decrees that help you influence your nation, as well as a lot of different national factors that add flavor to the states - some are more developed than others, some offer more libery to their citizens, there are on different stages of development etc. It really varies them a lot.
5. You can play with your friends easily due to the turn system which I honestly prefer to the real-time one.
6. There are quite a lot of countries to choose from - virtually all the main world powers. I would certainly prefer to be able to play as any country in the world as in Victoria 2 where I really enjoyed my Dutch and Swedish gameplays, but it's good enough.
7. Countries that are multi-national such as Austria-Hungary have different national forces which is fun and historically accurate.
8. Diplomacy is done really well, with options such as a State Visit to boost relations in addition to more typical ones. It's done pretty well. There is a very realistic threat system where your military buildup will make other nations threatened and respond to it. It also raises the general tension and can potentially lead to war.
9. There are a lot of technologies to research and the whole research system is done quite well.
10. Music is really great and certainly fits the time period.
[b]The Setting[/b]
I really love the nineteenth century setting of the game. It allows for much more than simple military rivalry between the nations - you can compete for prestige, colonies, wealth, choose your allies and cooperate with them, and exploit third-world nations.
The are some mistakes, such as Bonaparte as the President of France in 1880, but overall I really love that there are real monarchs/presidents and prime ministers.
[b]The Verdict[/b]
I played quite a few long campaigns in Victoria and Victoria 2 and I must say that this game is a superior one. The military system and the colonizations are not even close while economy-wise they're pretty similar. Give it a try, since it's pretty stable now, and I think you'll like it.'
Overall, the setting is amazing. You can do much more than just fight with other countries - you can engage in an arms race, compete for prestige, wealth, colonies, or cooperate peacefully to benefit both your nation and your allies. Nineteenth century is possibly one of the best settings to allow for such a myriad of activities.
This could be easily my favorite grand strategy game... its perfect in all senses but, it has one major flaw... the time a turn takes to be completed... if you have a lot of patience you could enjoy this gem.

Turn times are way way way too long - unplayable as is.
Great concept, detail, look, challange etc but is made unplayable with huge turn times. Also the game has a lot of turns, in many turns the player may do very little 20-30 seconds of planning and playing followed by 2-5 minutes of waiting. In a game with 100+ turns it is a joke.
I want to play it, I keep checking in now and then to see if has been fixed. Will keep checking. Fix/improve it!

The complexity is staggering and this game could be a lot of fun, but I just do not have the time nor desire to play a game where more than half the time is spent waiting for a turn to process (and there are a lot of turns in this game). Not sure what kind of single core monster you need to have to be able to play it properly.

Superb game but one must be patient, get up while the AI does its thing, and enjoy playing rather than being result-oriented. It is like being there. Great!
One thing I don't understand is why not include Holland, Spain, and Portugal (as was done with Belgium) in the playable nations since they have colonies everywhere.
I have found as I play that the game is biased in favor of the British and the Americans and very much against the Russians as if Russophobia has also reached the game world. That is a shame.
There is simply no consistency in PoN. Could've been a Victoria II beater, but trips over its two left feet far too often: from the poor examples of translation presumably from french, "instaured" etc. to the diabolically slow map scrolling (loading in and out 3 trillion png files), from the many typos and inconsistencies (Devonport Naval Yard should be Devonport Dockyard, as in RL) to the bewilderment of the diploderp screen, "We, African nation X, hate you Piedmontese because of your (pre-placed) military at Europe's borders! (-what do you do, unilaterally disarm to get a trade favour?) to the uncertainty whether the Grand Campaign is on rails despite the sandbox feel, to the almost singularly useless technology screen (1 option exists: add 50 quid to research, per arbitrary project, per percentage point) to the manual which has a strategy guide for:
Spain and China --both of which are officially unplayable in 1.0 to 1.4 without console cheats or serious editing of files.

Music: Do you like "Land of Hope and Glory"? You had better, because it repeats itself almost every five minites, and it's live, so hundreds of drunk patriots singing this over and again "sears itself inside my skull"-- A. Youtuber.
Add all of the above to the sheer unfriendliness and/or downright rudeness of the official forum and this thing, despite the fantastic concept is simply too incoherent to recommend.
The price? Outrageous since there's a retail version collection to be found for a single quid/dollar.
But the economy is fantastic, there is no doubt of it. If there were more cohesion it'd probably get a thumbs-up.
This is a very involved and complex game. When you hit the turn button, be prepared to wait a bit until it is your turn again. It takes time to generate the turns for the other nations. This doesn't bother me, but some players don't care for it. I usually keep my mobile phone handy and surf the web while I wait. When your turn comes round again, you get a list at the bottom of the screen you can scroll through that alerts you to what other nations have done as well as what your nation traded and took in via taxation.
In a nutshell, you might think of this as a vastly superior version of Imperialism. Imperialism was a game from the 1990s that featured industry, trade, diplomacy, national resource development and a military component.
You have military units, some with leaders. Your military requires you keep up supply lines for them. There are a lot of units. I have played Japan thus far and have found available what one would expect from an army of the 1850s in Japan but with some surprises like signals units, balloon observation and medical units. Players also have naval units available.
Trade is pretty straightforward, as is the colonial aspect and the diplomacy. Research seems to be carried out without player intervention for the most part.
There is a political component. Under the regional census tab, you can attempt to enact social reforms and laws. Under trade and commerce, you can enact trade policies which will effect inflation and wealth along with domestic contentment. You can also adjust taxation as it is broken down into income taxes, tarriffs, etc.
The number of things that you can build in this game is amazing. From farms of all differing types of agriculture, to manufacturing, military and naval buildings, you can do quite a bit. Hovering over the structure, or improvement, tells you the number of days to build and components you need to do it. A turn is 15 days, so some structures take a while to come online. An area that will allow you to build a particular item lights up green, which makes thing move a bit faster.
I would certainly recommend this game. There is a learning curve and the game features several tutorial modules that are very helpful. I recommend playing those. After the tutorial, I chose the nation of Japan to play because it is a smaller nation and I thought it would be easier to learn with versus trying to play Britain or France. There are also several scenarios included with the game and the developers have created others to go with it. The update tab on the starting screen takes you to the developer's website where you can purchase the other scenarios.
My one and only gripe with this game is really a Steam problem. The game will randomly crash. From what I have found reading around forums on the internet, the game directly from the developers doesn't have this problem. For that reason, I cannot write a complete review on the game. I usually make it about three turns and it's gone. Luckily it saves and I can resume the next time I decide to play.
This game has tremendous potential. Unfortunately the wait times between turns are long enough to make it totally unplayable.
Even using a good computer five years after release, it takes about two minutes for the AI nations to process their turns. Each turn is two weeks. A grand campaign 70 years. That's ~1800 times I have to sit and wait for two minutes.
Most turns the player does very little. The game very quickly turns into 30 seconds of playing, hit end turn, and then sit and stare for a few minutes. Not a good experience!

Very good game with great depth. Quite slow pace, though and have issues with lagging latter in the game. There is also not too much variations in AI play, but having in mind that there are not many grand strategies about XIX century world - it's a must to try out if you like grand strategies.

Quite complex and the UI is stagering.
I find my self sitting there continually clickly next turn to gather enough capital to do anything.
Any game that requires a 70 page booklet that starts with "how to read the booklet" (which isnt supplied in digital copies to my knowledge) to even begin to understand is simply going to cause you more headaches than $20 is worth.
Despite is takes time to learn I actually enjoy this game. 8/10
Pride of nations is conceptually very good and for the right people I can give it a solid recommendation. However I will start this review with the bad and some of the cons are quite big.
-Graphics look like they are from 1995. Not a huge problem, but honestly I expect even basic graphics to at least maintain the resolution of my screen and have writing not pixel out on counters.
-Learning to play is terribly difficult. Interface is confusion and not self explanitory. Introduction tutotrial gives an overview of the buttons but none of the specifics, such as loading troops onto ships. It consists of a few text pages and some arrows which point to the wrong parts of the screen. Game features a rule BOOK and you are better off reading that.
-Turn times are long. Too long. The game is complex so there is a lot to be done. To further the problem there are parts of the game which the player will turn through quickly because there is nothing going on. I can get a lot done in the time it takes for a turn to go by
-Poor player feedback. This goes back to the interface. But often it is not easy to get the information you need. For example if someone is offering you an alliance that requires attention. The notification is hidden in an event list filled with transactions. Or inorder to figure out the unemployment (important if creating new jobs) in an area you need to find the population then find and subtract workers from each local jobsite. Often it is difficult to understand the implications of your actions without consulting the full details of the rules. And good luck if its diplomact which the manual gives no explaination on how the AI thinks.
-Private capital is spent by the government or private projects. This kind breaks the emmusion a little because this is not how nations nfluence their economy.
Now to the good.
This is the single most detailed all inclusive game about the age of imperialism. Every aspect of the 19th century is put into this game. It is not clear or well explained but it all it there. I am a big board gamer and this sorta reminds me of one of my favorits Pax Brittanica. Therefore there is not way I cannot recommmend this to anyone who is interested in a deep strategy game. The game is not too micromanagy once the poor interface is figured out.
This is still the worse game on the entire Steam store. Please do not support this company.

The game has interesting mechanics. They are not quick to learn as the interface isn't exactly friendly. The UI has its own logic. Once you realize what it is, it becomes easier to use. Yet, still not friendly at first.
My main issue with the game is the considerable time between turns, becoming longer and longer quickly as the game progress, despite being above the recommanded specs. So, quickly, turns by the AI take ages.
This problem is made worse by the limited number of actions you are going to make on each turn. Granted, it depends on nation played and what scenario, what are your objectives etc.
Still, there will be turns where you have little to do. Or maybe even nothing because you have to build reserve before building, assembling armies before war, whatever before doing actions.
So you can have two, three turns with limited or maybe no action but the time to process each turn still take longer and longer as the game progress.
I'm used to Paradox games becoming over the campaign slower and slower with saving. Pride of Nations is, unfortunately, even worse and quickly worse when processing turns.
I wanted to love the game, I believe there are goods ideas but the game engine is in the way. But spending much more time waiting for turns to be processed than actually playing... no... I regret but I can't recommend the game because of that.
Great game with 5 or more minutes waiting between turns. WAY too long to wait with a turn based game. Buy this if you like staring at an uneventful screen, and want to play "Waiting Simulator".

I'd really like to play this game since most of the players that liked it prefer the same kinds of games that I do. I find most titles in this genre (such as CK II) are totally dumbed-down. It's games like these that I really want. The problem with this game is no feedback and it is too slow.

What somebody at Ageod needs to do is put together a real Lets Play. Not that crappy little 5-minute job they have on You-Tube right now. The only real Let's Play this game has is by some guy that doesn't talk.

Can't play it, it doesn't support dual monitors and I'm not going to tune mine off everytime I want to play it.
Not unlike other AGEOD games I've played in the past, the game mechanics for Pride of Nations look like they've got a lot of potential to be really good. However, also not unlike other AGEOD games, the user interface of the game is not up to the task of the mechanics. Lists of nations that you have to click to scroll down one at a time, clunky and variable scrolling speeds for a map (and you'll spend a lot of time scrolling across the map), a painfully limited messaging system (you have a new turn, here's 157 new messages....! There's no filter, no way of focussing things). It's playable, but it's the kind of game that you would literally need to have a notepad and paper next to you to play properly, because the game doesn't convey enough of the required information itself (or have a built-in system of reminders/overlays that is effective). The diplomatic UI is particularly obtuse, for a game where (unlike many other AGEOD games) diplomacy is very important.
The in-game tutorials are also very limited, and nowhere near up to scratch for a game of this type. They repeatedly refer players back to the manual, but for a game that as far as I know was only released digitally, relying on a manual is a bit silly. At the very least, make the manual text available in-game, and far more preferably available contextually in-game.
If you can look past the UI to the game mechanics, it really does like like there's a potential gem here. I haven't played enough of it to be able to rate the AI, but AGEOD games tend to be fairly strong on this front. The mechanics look great, the attention to detail in set-up situations and a decent number (4-5) of extra scenarios as well as the grand campaign mean there's a substantial amount of game here, but the tools given to play the game are not up to scratch, and you'll have to persevere through them to get to the gameplay underneath.
Patience needed! If you can master your impatience, this game is as deep as the ocean (in PC game terms), very historical, very cerebral and very satisfying - if you are patient. The turns are slow, but you have to keep reminding yourself that this game in having to process an IMMENSE GLOBAL amount of information: remembering this will makew you more sympathetic and PATIENT! It's a tremendous game for history buffs like me who want to re-write history. The map and detail are rich, the management needs concentration. But if you are orepared to be PATIENT and invest the time, this game is immensely rewarding. No, honestly.
I bought this game years ago and I have NEVER gotten it to work! It freezes up every time I try to open it... I love Paradox, but this is a total bust!
I've had this game for a long time, and have recently started playing it again. I still really like it. Yes, it is complicated, has a steep learning curve and takes some time to learn, unless you are familiar with AGEODs other fantastic strategy/simulation games. If you enjoy historical simulations/strategy games then you will enjoy playing this game, as long as you are prepared to learn how to play the game. The tutorials will teach you the basics, and there are some videos on Youtube that could also help you out.
I find the game challenging and rewarding. I've clocked up over 140 hours and am happy to add another 140 to that. Other reviewers mention the game runs slowly and crashes often - I haven't encountered this problem to be honest, but yes, it does take a couple of minutes when you click 'end turn' but when you think of how much the computer needs to calculate and execute I find it understandable and don't mind the wait. The game did used to crash occasionally, however, since I have started playing again it has not crashed once in the 11.3 hours in the last couple of days. (Patch 1.04 has just been released recently and I believe this has addressed most of the instability problems).
I'm glad I decided to re-install this gem and am enjoying playing it. I had been playing AGEODs Civil War 2 before getting back to this. CW2 is also great :)

It worked for about an hour and after that I could never get the game running again.
I read a few comments before I finally bought this game on special. Would not have bought it at the original price. I was pleasantly surprised when the game started.
In some reviews people complained about being able to load the game. I had no problems and I am using Win 8.1 SL. The key is to leave enough time for the program to startup. It does take a while to load, but if you are patient enough, you will see there is no problem with the startup. Not on my system anyways ...
Like the music, fits with the genre.
Has a tutorial. Must work through it. Don't try to figure out everything for yourself, unless you like that kind of approach.
Definitely worth buying on special or for a $10 price tag. More is maybe expecting a bit too much.

The game runs very slowly and crashes often. Very frustrating and dissapointing as from what I saw of it there was great depth.
This game was designed for SINGLE-CORE processors only. So, unless you have an old Pentium4 still up and running it's almost impossible to play this game for it will utilize only 1 core of your dual/quad/octacore processor. Theirfore it will take up to 5 minutes to process a turn. And remember...there are 1500 turns in this game. That's a lot of waiting!!!

If you like paradox games you know what to expect. Its a fun game when it works if you like nation building and micromanaging. Unfortunately its completely broken for me so I'm now unable to play it at all.
Après avoir tenté d'y jouer pendant pas mal d'heures, je ne peux que le déconseiller. L'énorme défaut de ce jeu en tour c'est que les tours prennent au moins plus de 5 minutes, mêmes avec les pc les plus à jour (MSI GE60 2OC-263XFR). La complexité de ce jeu aurait pu en faire l'une des meilleures références dans le genre "Grand Strategy" car le joueur est confronté à beaucoup de paramètres. En comparaison Victoria II qui recouvre la même période est d'une simplicité enfantine. La gestion prend plus le pas que sur la guere et si vous désirez repeindre la carte avec votre couleur ce sera impossible.
Encore une fois, dommage pour le temps,....
Attention aux perfs et à la lourdeur, pas un très bon jeu AGEOD malgré son ambition.
