For a bog standard 3D platformer similar to Mario Sunshine, its okay for what it is. It has a decent amount interest through the good enough music and a good variety of locations in both the worlds and the hub. The gameplay is tight with a good sense of exploration and difficulty. The tools are a nice change of pace as instead of the standard collectathon, you go and hunt fossils or take pictures. It also has a new game plus which gives it some challenge. In short, it ranges from mediocre to unimpressive especially when compared, but its decent enough as a standalone game for those with the need of scratching that 3D platforming itch.

If you were to look at Poi and think "this looks like budget Super Mario Sunshine"... You'd be right ! It shares the same gameplay, is structured the same way, and even references it countless times. It could have easily just been another cheap imitation, but instead feels like it was crafted with care by someone who really liked the original. So if you did too, it could be worth your time.

Visually, Poi is very limited and lacks charm. A generic hero, basic characters, blobs and moles as enemies : it's serviceable at best.
The controls are what you'd expect from a classic platformer with a double jump, with the unusual addition of a dive. It's not as fun without Fludd on your back, but it lets you perform some neat little tricks once you get the hang of it. This almost compensates for an unruly camera and stiff controls that often lock you in a direction, making ladders dangerous endeavors.
Still, those shortcomings won't matter that much because the game is really accessible. You could even say that it's... Easy as Poi ! (... No ? ... Even if you're Australian ?). Only the last climb will present a certain challenge, and even then, there's more than enough checkpoints.
But the worst part of the game is probably the bosses. Clunky, barely functional and painfully uninspired, they're just awful.

Now, the best thing about Poi is what it does like Super Mario Sunshine, even if the quality is nowhere near as high.
From your airship that serves as a hub, you'll travel to 4 different worlds that each provide a large area, home of several medallions. They're the shines or stars from the Mario series, hidden as usual behind small platforming challenges or mysteries that are easy to solve, but pretty fun. As you progress through the game, more floating islands will join the hub, and offer even more short missions : labyrinths, time trials, arenas... Variety really is what makes Poi shine !
Along the way and for the 7 hours that it will take to find everything, you'll also notice the many nods given to Sunshine : sand birds, a giant bell to clean with water, gears and keys that serve as blue and red coins, an old guide who goes "yahoo" in a very familiar tone... Good memories.

A Walmart Super Mario Sunshine, an hommage, an ersatz or even a fanmade project... You can call Poi many names, but it's still an enjoyable experience.
There's no reason to play this over the game that inspired it, but it you have already played the latter or don't feel like emulating it, Poi's here !
I'll give it a [b] 6[/b]. But keep in mind that if you don't have a special affinity for Sunshine, you may not be as forgiving as I am.

So, this review is going to be different from my previous ones because I am mainly going to be focusing on the “Gameplay” and “Story” aspects of “Poi (2017).” Like the “Kao the Kangaroo” games, I took down some notes to help me remember what I encountered while playing this game, because I honestly did not want to play this game again. Also, if I sound cynical in this review, I apologize in advance. Anyway, let’s get started.

Gameplay

Now, if you played or watched YouTube videos of “Poi,” you’d probably think that it plays like “SM64,” “Sunshine,” and/or “Galaxy,” or think that it feels like a “3D Mario” clone. I mean, if you thought it was a “3D Mario” clone, I would’ve believed you. The characters you control even have a flipping triple jump just like Mario for Pete’s sake! However, the devs also added a double jump in your arsenal of moves, which feels odd. I mean, if you have a double jump then what’s the point of adding an SM64-style triple jump? I mean the game would be fine without it and players can choose not to use it if they don’t feel like it. I get that the devs wanted to pay homage to the “fifth gen” era, but I felt like they took too much inspiration from the “Mario” games. If you’re inspired by something, you can incorporate those ideas into your projects, but you have to make your game’s mechanics unique from what your game is inspired by. Otherwise, people are just going to look at it and see it as a carbon copy of that popular thing. “Hat in Time” took inspiration from “Mario” and “Banjo” but it incorporated its own ideas that made it unique. Heck, one YouTuber I follow, “Jiggylookback” is making their own platformer inspired by “Banjo” and “DK64.” I’m sorry if I’m coming across as harsh here but I just wanted to give context as best as I can because if someone is making their own game, I am more than happy to play it as long as they have their own uniqueness. I was critical towards “Mighty No. 9” and “40 Winks” because of the frustrating flaws and questionable design choices they had, but in the end, I felt like “MN9” had some potential and I enjoyed some aspects of “40 Winks” like its costume system. Heck, I was even somewhat fair towards “Kao: Round 2” despite its flaws. Anyway, enough with the tangent, let’s move on.

So, much like “SM64” and “Banjo,” you have a hub area in the form of the sky. However, the more you progress through the game, the hub zone adds new areas where you can talk to more NPCs and do optional missions, but I’ll get to that later. Much like other collect-a-thon platformers, you collect this game’s main collectible, the explorer medallions. Now I did mention that this game and “Sunshine” have some similarities, and the reason I said that is because “Poi’s” missions remind me of “Sunshine’s” mission structure in the way the camera shows where the medallion location is. Aside from the missions differentiating themselves, the seventh mission in the four main worlds can get repetitive because you have to collect 100 coins and give them to the raccoon merchant. Oh my goodness, the coins. Say what you want about “SM64,” “Banjo,” and “DK64” but at least the coins, music notes, and colored bananas served a purpose. In this game however, I had more money than what I knew what to do with it. Once you buy everything from the old man, that’s it; there is nothing else you can buy from him. No extra hearts, no maps (even though the compass was helpful), no nothing. Jeez Louise, even “Ocarina of Time” and “Wind Waker” gave you options of what you want to buy better. However, if you still have coins left over, you can buy challenges from the merchant with the red bandana and beat those challenges to get extra medallions. However, once you beat all of them, you get to do them the second time but instead you have to find a certain number of keys in each challenge to get the extra medallions. Okay, that sounds interesting, doing the levels the second time and getting more rewards. However, if you are a new player, you’re going to have to keep those traps and hazards in mind as you are playing. The medallions are not the only collectibles you can find while exploring. You can also find fossils for the archaeologist and golden gears for the pilot lady who has her aircraft broken down. So, I guess this game also reminds me of “Battle for Bikini Bottom.”

Speaking of “BfBB,” if you have ever played that game, you’d know how there are checkpoints placed in certain parts of levels. Well, guess what? “Poi” does that same concept as well, and thank goodness for that, because I cannot imagine playing the game “normally” without those. Keep the word, “normally” at the back of your mind because we will get to it. For the most part, the characters control okay. Yes, “characters” because you can play as either a male or female. It doesn’t matter which character you choose because they play exactly the same. Man, this is like “40 Winks” but more boring. The game gives you a roll attack but I honestly do not recommend using it because half the time it works but half the time it doesn’t and it can lead you to taking damage and losing coins. No, the coins do not give you health back. Instead, you grab hearts to get health back. So, I recommend jumping on them instead of rolling. If you hold the roll button while moving, you can sprint. It’s useless though since you run at the same speed. Once you collect a certain amount of medallions, you then unlock the final world. Once you beat the game, there’s nothing much to do besides collecting costumes and 100%ing or 101%ing the game which are optional. Speaking of the costumes, they are just palette swaps. Look, I understand that the devs had a limited budget, but this just feels lazy. I don’t want to spoil the ending if you have never played “Poi.” However, one thing I can say is that after 101%ing “Poi,” I was more than disappointed. You’ll understand once you play this game.

Remember when I said “normally?” Well, after beating the game, there is a New Game + mode where you can play the game again. However, you CANNOT screw ANYTHING up and you HAVE to play PERFECTLY, because you only have ONE heart. So, what did I do? I said, “Heck no, 101%ing this game is more than enough for me.” However, if you have the willpower, then more power to you.

Story

This game has a story, but it doesn't even matter because it’s poorly written and it completely drops everything about the old man’s origin. I’m going to sound like a broken record here, but not all platformers need to have a complex/in-depth story. Sure, “Galaxy 1” had a story but at least Nintendo focused more on making the gameplay fun, and at least the story was well-written. Even reading the lore was optional. Sorry for sounding harsh here but when you have a story written like this people will notice inconsistencies and plot-holes within it. Anyway, let’s wrap everything up.

Final Verdict

You do not hear me saying this much, but I really wish Steam would add a “Mixed” option and change the recommendation options to “Like” or “Dislike.” I’m saying this because even though I have been criticizing this game a lot, I do think this game has some potential. But do you want to know what the sad part is? PolyKid, if you are reading this, I want you to know that I believe you guys have a lot of potential and I see the passion you have for the platformer genre. Heck, “Poi” shows a lot of charm and heart, much like other platformers I played. But I can’t bring myself to play it more. It really sucks because I enjoy a lot of platformers like “Banjo,” “DK64,” and “Rayman 2” for example. However, when I notice these problems, it turns me off from playing. If you guys ever make another game, I hope you guys make it the best it can be. So, in the meantime, I wish you all the best and thank you for what you have done for this game.

This is a very nicely done adventure and exploration game with challenging jump n run sequences and puzzle solving.
I was looking for something like Tomb Raider, but kid friendly, so with Super Mario mixed in.

Great platformer for everyone who needs the itch for something like Super Mario 64, but omg this New Game+ Mode is just beyond lazy. Flipping the levels and just give you one hitpoint? Nah man, that wasnt the play.

But otherwise its fantastic, would recommend it other friends.

Poi is the best version of Super Mario Sunshine I’ve ever played that isn’t actually Super Mario Sunshine.

I first picked up Poi back in 2017 for my Nintendo Switch. It was a $20 bargain-bin find at GameStop, and I wasn’t expecting much. I just needed something to keep me busy until Super Mario Odyssey dropped. But as soon as I started playing, it became clear this wasn’t just a filler title. Poi had something special.

I didn’t finish it back then. Life got in the way, and the game got left behind. Fast-forward a few years, and I found it again on PC for just a couple of bucks. Why not give it another shot? I thought. Little did I know, I was about to fall in love with Poi all over again.

This time, I finished the entire thing. Not only did I beat the game, but I went all-out, collecting every single achievement—even the brutal New Game+ mode. And you know what? I loved every minute of it. It reminded me why I adore 3D platformers in the first place.

Sure, Poi might not have the most memorable aesthetics or the most groundbreaking story. But beneath its flaws, this game is overflowing with passion and soul. For a title made by just two developers, it’s amazing how much care and polish went into every detail. Every jump, every collectible, and every level feels like it was crafted with love.

Throughout the game, you'll travel to four main worlds, along with some bonus areas and plenty of hidden goodies to discover. The level design is tight, and the controls are buttery smooth. Poi hits that sweet spot where it’s challenging enough to keep you on your toes, but fair enough that you know every mistake is on you. That’s something even big-budget titles don’t always get right.

And let’s talk about the gameplay. It’s some of the best platforming I’ve played in years. Poi takes me back to the golden age of 3D platformers, when games were simple, fun, and full of charm. The kind of game where you lose track of time because you’re having too much fun.

So, if you’ve got a few dollars and a craving for some quality platforming, give Poi a shot. You might just find yourself collecting every achievement, too.

After playing and replaying banjo games to death over the years, this game scratched that itch. Not quite as impressive, not quite as challenging. But I just wanted to double jump around a brightly colored and decorated (but visually uncrowded) environment collecting things.

This is a delightful platformer. I took a long time to finally get around to playing it because I was turned off by the character designs. That was a huge mistake, as the game is extremely charming and smooth to play. The movement is sublime, and scales well at higher framerates. The level designs are great, and the environment graphics are significantly more impressive and inspired than the human character designs. The non-human characters are also very cute. If you're as big a fan of good movement in games as I am, you owe it to yourself to give Poi a try.

"Generico 64"

This is a passable, kid-safe platformer heavily inspired by Mario 64. It's good for a few hours and, to its credit, has a ton of different activities and collectables to find. It's fun to complete the initial few worlds and then go back with more tools and find the last few things you missed. There is not really any story worth mentioning.

The biggest issue here is hit detection, and it's so bad that it's often best just to flat-out avoid all enemies because you never know if you'll take damage when jumping on them or rolling into them. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Sometimes a stunned enemy will kill you somehow. This is especially glaring in the New Game+ mode where you can only take a single hit. This goes for some flame traps as well, often they can hit you when it really seems like they shouldn't have.

An exceptional 3D platformer filled to the brim with creativity and whimsy. Plenty of variety in terms of locations, objectives, etc. Controls are tight and fluid; it feels similar to games like Super Mario Sunshine. The game is light in terms of narrative, but its characters and stories are all charming.

Considering this game has been hidden away in my Steam library for years, it was an amazing surprise to finally play it and see just how good it truly is

Lots of reviews about this game mirror my own thoughts. It's a mediocre Mario clone. For some that means, "MORE MARIO!" For me, it just reminds me that Nintendo does this genre much much better, and I would be happier playing those games a 2nd (or 3rd) time.

I had to fight through a somewhat awkward camera to find it, but Poi recaptured that same nostalgic magic I first experienced when I played Super Mario 64 a long time ago. The stages are expertly crafted so that there's always something interesting in every corner coaxing you to explore, but they also aren't so big that they would become bloated or slow to navigate, either.

+ This game runs natively on Mac, which is awesome! I had no problems running it on my MacBook.

+ It took me 12 hours to get a 100% save file. Playing through again on New Game+, I finished just the main story in a little under 4 hours. Your playtime will probably lie somewhere between those numbers -- I tend to have slower playtimes than average.

+ I was able to get that 100% save file without using a guide. The in-game Compass item helped me find two locations I had trouble finding on my own, without spoiling their location entirely.

+ The music is generally good but forgettable, except for one segment near the end of the game where it was *perfect.* I can't say it will capture everyone's attention like it did mine, but that was definitely THE defining moment in the game for me.

= The graphics, cast, and game world are relatively simple and cartoony, but also charming and whimsical.
Nothing worth writing home about, but they set the stage for the exploration, which is what I feel the main appeal of the game is.

= Golden Gears and Costumes will only start appearing in worlds after they've been unlocked, so it's possible to miss them when they appear in an area you think you've already explored. I also don't think the Compass can find these items (although I ultimately never needed to use it for them, so I'm not 100% sure about this).

= The sideways somersault jump and the triple jump unfortunately aren't as convenient or as easy to perform as the double jump, generally lessening the appeal of the platforming. What's here is good, just underutilized. I'd have preferred if New Game+ simply removed the double jump rather than limited HP to 1, since I think that would've been a far more mechanically interesting way to up the difficulty while also rewarding better gameplay.

- While there's not much story, what's there doesn't quite tie together as nicely as I hoped. SPOILER: [spoiler] The Master Explorer's missing wife is not brought up again after the initial cutscene at the Forest, even at the end of the game. This feels like a HUGE missed opportunity and even a mention of her would have helped the ending from feeling as abrupt as it ended up being. [/spoiler]

- While New Game+ is a great excuse to revisit the game (the mirrored environments make them just disorienting enough to be interesting to navigate through again), the 1 HP limit is often frustrating, and you may not find the 4 or so hours it takes to be worth it for just one achievement, if you chase those.

Overall, Poi was an absolute blast to play. I'd often end a play session excitedly imagining what the next world would be like, or thinking about if maybe there was more to explore in a certain corner or a map, and I could hardly wait until my next session. If you're able to overlook its occasional minor flaws, I think you'll be in for an absolute treat of a game!

I had a huge itch to re play through Super Mario 64, and after seeing i had to update my Dolphin, I decided to pass. I hopped on Reddit and asked for Super Mario 64 like games.

Oh boy did I find one..

Poi is a super cute, super fun and despite being my first time playing it, it felt nostalgic. It is so fluid, where during a later level I felt like I was speed running it as the roll into a mega jump, wall jump combo is addicting. The medals gave star vibes and It was a blast to collect them all. I would 100% recommend anyone getting this game, whether its for their kids, or even for themselves. It was a fantastic experience, and it was a perfect way to start my 2025. Thanks PolyKid.

Poi ist ein 3D-Plattformer, der stark an die goldene Ära des Genres erinnert, in der Klassiker wie Super Mario 64 und Banjo-Kazooie den Ton angaben. Es bietet eine gelungene Mischung aus Nostalgie und neuen Ansätzen, die es zu einem interessanten und spaßigen Titel für Genre-Fans machen.

Grafik & Atmosphäre

Optisch wirkt Poi zu Beginn etwas simpel und fast schon billig, doch schnell wird klar, dass dies ein Teil des Charmes und des Gesamtkonzepts ist. Spätere Gegner und Umgebungen sind liebevoll gestaltet, und die Spielwelten – wie Wüste, Vulkan und Küstengebiete – gewinnen an Charakter. Besonders die Wüsten- und Vulkanlevel stechen durch ihr gelungenes Design hervor. Die Welten sind zwar thematisch keine Revolution, aber durch die vielen Möglichkeiten, mit präzisen Sprüngen neue Wege zu entdecken und zu „skippen“, fühlen sich die Levels dynamisch und belohnend an. Die kleinen Sidequests, die man sich selbst schaffen kann, machen das Erkunden besonders unterhaltsam.

Steuerung & Gameplay

Die Steuerung von Poi ist überraschend präzise und intuitiv – gerade für einen Indie-Titel. Im Vergleich fühlt sich selbst ein Spyro manchmal weniger flüssig an. Das Hauptziel besteht darin, "Explorer Medals" (ähnlich den Sternen in Super Mario 64) zu sammeln, indem man verschiedene Aufgaben in den Levels erfüllt. Das Spiel beginnt recht einfach, doch im Verlauf werden die Herausforderungen komplexer, wobei Timing und Präzision immer wichtiger werden.

Besonders erfrischend sind die sammelbaren Gegenstände wie Fossilien, Zahnräder und spezielle Orte, die zu entdecken sind. Diese gehören zwar klar zur traditionellen Collectathon-Formel, sind aber gut in das Spiel integriert und bieten eine Menge Spaß.
Level-Design

Das Level-Design ist eine der großen Stärken von Poi. Die offenen Welten laden zum Erkunden ein, und überall gibt es Belohnungen für neugierige Spieler. Versteckte Pfade und geheime Bereiche machen den Reiz aus. Leider sind die Bosskämpfe der große Schwachpunkt des Spiels. Der erste Bosskampf ist langwierig und unpräzise, der zweite hingegen langweilig und einfach. In der dritten Welt gibt es überhaupt keinen Boss, und der Boss der vierten Welt ist enttäuschend. Für das Finale hat man sich entschieden, eine neue Mechanik einzuführen, die den Endkampf mehr wie eine szenische Sequenz wirken lässt, was durchaus okay ist, da der vorangegangene Level-Abschnitt sich wie ein Endboss angefühlt hat.

Die Musik in Poi ist solide, aber unspektakulär. Sie ist angenehm im Hintergrund, ohne jemals wirklich hervorzustechen – was für manche Spiele nervig sein kann. Hier jedoch passt sie gut zur entspannten Atmosphäre. Die Soundeffekte sind funktional und gut auf die Aktionen der Spielfigur abgestimmt.
Schwierigkeitsgrad & Umfang

Für Sammler ist Poi ein Fest, denn die 100%-Marke ist das klare Ziel. Die Aufgaben sind vielfältig und motivierend, und nur selten wird man dazu verleitet, im Internet nach Lösungen zu suchen. Ein Minuspunkt ist jedoch das späte Erscheinen der Zahnräder und Kostüme. So dachte ich, ich hätte Welt 1 bereits komplettiert, nur um später wieder zurückkehren zu müssen, um diese neuen Sammlerstücke zu finden. Das fühlt sich wie schlechtes Spieldesign an. Auch das "New Game Plus"-Achievement ist nicht sonderlich kreativ – hier kann man sich die Herausforderungen relativ einfach machen, was das Erlebnis etwas dämpft.

Was Poi jedoch besonders macht, ist die Freiheit im Spiel. Es gibt kaum unsichtbare Barrieren, sodass sich das Spiel wirklich offen und unbeschränkt anfühlt. Das freie Erkunden und kreative Überwinden von Hindernissen macht einen Großteil des Reizes aus.
Kritikpunkte

Die größten Schwächen von Poi liegen eindeutig in den Bosskämpfen. Sie sind unspektakulär und uninspiriert – manchmal hätte es dem Spiel sogar besser getan, einfach keine Bosse einzubauen. In einigen Bereichen fehlt dem Spiel die kreative Tiefe, um wirklich herausragend zu sein. Zudem gibt es wenig Innovationen oder neue Ideen, die es von anderen Spielen des Genres abheben. Während Poi seine Sache gut macht, fühlt es sich in einigen Aspekten einfach zu vertraut an.
Fazit

Insgesamt ist Poi ein charmantes 3D-Plattform-Abenteuer, das Fans klassischer Jump'n'Runs eine Menge Spaß bereiten wird. Mit präziser Steuerung, offenem Level-Design und zahlreichen Herausforderungen bietet es sowohl Neueinsteigern als auch erfahrenen Spielern eine unterhaltsame Erfahrung. Es mag das Rad nicht neu erfinden, aber für 100%-Läufer und Nostalgiker ist Poi definitiv einen Blick wert.

Definitely a hidden gem, fun and addicting. A blast to play through and there so many things to do. Captures the SM64 feeling perfectly. I don't get the negatives of the reviews. The collision detection it's a little iffy but not as bad as the reviewers say. Controls, camera and final boss were fine. This is an indie game not a Triple A game.

The only real bad thing about this game is that is short, even with everything. I'm hoping there is a sequel with twice the number of worlds.

隠しきれないほどマリオ64です。ゲーム開始して3段ジャンプを決めたところで確信するでしょう。

ゲーム内容もそんな感じで小目標を次々クリアして進めていく流れ。フィールドもこじんまりしてるけどロケーションは豊富です。
注意点として"カメラが普通で真っ当な動きをする"のでマリオ64に慣れた人ほど苦労するかもしれません。「あのジュゲムのカメラ実は優秀だったのか？」とか思ってしまいました。

ボリュームはアクションゲームとして十分ありますがフィールド内に隠しステージとかはあまり無いので探索好きな人はちょっと物足りないかも。
ただこれも比較対象がデカすぎるだけなので普通に見れば十分良作なACTだと思います。

Poi is a fantastic 3d Platfoming Collectathon, a must play for any fan of the genre. It doesn't break any new ground but it's just pure fun. Which is what a game should be. The levels aren't too big or too small feel just perfect to get around in. The controls are good. The movement is so much fun to do and with clever use of your wall jump can complete the task really quickly. The music is decent it's catchy and fits the environment but it's not something most will listen to outside of the levels. The side stuff is pretty decent. The game is very easy outside of doing New Game+ which gives you only one HP, that can get challenging since easy to get hit by stuff. It's not a perfect game but it hits the exact beats it needs to be a very very fun experience. Please make Poi 2, I need it.

Un bon jeu de plates-formes, qui rappelle les grandes heures de la Nintendo 64. Le contenu est généreux, avec pas mal de choses à compléter dans chaque niveaux, l'univers présenté est cohérent et la difficulté bien dosée. Je n'en attendais pas tant de ce petit jeu au final très sympathique.

Seuls quelques mobs pénibles et une caméra parfois capricieuse pourront frustrer les joueurs, mais rien de rédhibitoire. Je me suis bien amusé avec Poi, je le recommande donc à tous les amateurs de plates-formes et de collectathons.

言ってしまえばマリオリスペクトが非常に強い作品。
アクションの操作感覚や、ひとつのステージが複数のシチュエーションになり、
収集アイテムを取っていく構成など。
ただどうしても本家に比べるとアクションの感覚が固く、
またダメージが非常にシビアで敵を踏みづらい（判定が狭い）、
ライフが少なく回復手段に乏しい（本家のようにコインで回復したりしない）
無敵時間はあるとはいえ連続でダメージを受けて死ぬなどイライラが募ってしまいました。

Introduction
Today we are going to look at a game named Poi, you probably have never heard of it! If you have, then you will like that I’ll review it. Poi is what you get if an Indie developer makes a Super Mario 64 clone. Does this come with the bad camera? Are there other pitfalls? Let’s dig into this review!

What did I think before playing Poi?
I am not sure where I got Poi, I think I bought a bundle a few years ago and Poi looked fun. This was before I started the site and writing reviews. It has been sitting in my Steam library all this time, and finally, I am getting to play this game. There are quite some mixed reviews and I barely remember why I liked it, it is time to check the Steam page.

The Steam Page

It becomes clear in a matter of seconds this will be a collecting game where you will need to find the macguffins to finish the game. These are mostly in the form of explorer medals, but there are other items to collect and a whole book to keep track of your progress. I also think there are two characters to choose from and minigames to play.

I rated Poi with a 7.1 before playing.
All in all, it seems like a decent Super Mario 64 clone, I do hope the camera works better.

Story
The story is about two orphans that run away from their home. Because everyone knows that is the most reasonable thing to do, they meet an old man and fly away in a spaceship, I think the whale steers it.

Rating
I rate the story of Poi with a 6.0
While nothing special, it does set the game up for a grand chase of medallions!

Gameplay
The game starts with a tour in the forest, where you will need to learn some basic jumping skills. If you have played Super Mario 64, or any Super Mario game, you will notice the jumps are almost the same. You do notice there is a slight delay in jumping, the wall-kicks are in this game as well and can be abused.

It does not take long before you are whisked to the airship that is flown by the a giant whale, I am not sure how they captured it. Then you will learn about the explorer tools that you need to buy with the coins that are strewn over each level. And since you need to visit each level a few times, you will rack up coins quickly. Gems are worth more coins.

As you get new tools, you will also unlock the shovel and the compass. These have to be dug up, the fossils that you have to collect. There are other items, but most of them can be picked up. If you collect all fossils in one of the worlds, you will get a new medallion.

Now, to one of the big flaws of this game, the hitbox is completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. As in, you will be jumping on top of an enemy and while it is stunned, it will still hit you. Then you will lose some coins and after three hits you have to restart the whole level. The levels seem like a mixed up mess without thought on how they connect. This makes traversing them rough.

I rated the gameplay of Poi with a 6.9
While I do like the gameplay, the hitbox problem is too big and creates a lot of frustration.

Sound and Graphics
Graphics
The graphics are quite fun and whimsical, I love that you can explore the sky as well and that as you progress through the story, more people will come close to your airship. Sadly, most of the levels are rough around the edges and could use some polish.

Sound
The soundtracks almost did not seem to exist. I barely remember what it sounded like. The character makes a lot of noise while jumping. The enemies do make some sounds, but it is quite forgettable.

I rated the sound and graphics of Poi with a 5.5
This could have been much better!

What did I think after playing Poi?
I did enjoy playing this game, it was a fun experience. It makes me wonder, what if a really good Indie developing team makes a Super Mario 64 clone? This is not something that happens a lot. If the enemy hitbox was not this bad, I would have completed this game for 100%. Sadly, as it is now, this game is quite frustrating.

Despite the game having disconnected levels, there are different biomes to explore, like the forest, a volcano, and a lot more. If you do enjoy collecting games, then this might just be for you. Now about the difficulty, despite the strange hitboxes, this game is very casual and on the easy side. If you are new to 3D platforming, this is a good game for you!

What are my personal thoughts about Poi?
I did enjoy playing this game, it reminded me a lot of Super Mario. I have not finished everything yet, and I might even continue to play and collect some medallions!

A really enchanting game that I really enjoyed. The level of difficulty is very easy and is therefore suitable for a relaxed playthrough. There are many different missions that provide variety and the colorful worlds invite you to explore. I often completed other missions than the ones I actually started the level for. Overall a top platformer. That's why I thought it was a bit of a shame that I was done with everything after just 9 hours.

I like Poi. It's too easy, but the world's are really pleasant, and there's just enough challenge to be a relaxing sort of fun. There are some minor issues but it's a really impressive game overall. I wish more people would directly copy the Mario 64 style. This is up there on my all time 3D platformer list though, it has a lot of substance to it.

Super Mario 64 where Luigi is a girl and at the beginning you simply dismiss the fact, that someone went missing and concentrate on more important things: ancient treasure hunt. Help out the master explorer by doing everything yourself, run for completion by doing even more things for others to fulfill their dreams in life. And finally solve an ancient mystery to hopefully find that unique piece of ship decoration that noone else has.
Spoiler alert: there is no cake at the end. But a really wonderful experience only interrupted by the occasional outcry when you slightly misjudged your jump on an enemy.

For better or worse, it's very much Super Mario 64, at about 80-90% of the quality depending on what you're doing in the game. The mechanics of movement are nearly the same. Level structure overall is the same, with individual explorer medals (stars) being done one at a time, with the level potentially changing based on which medal you enter the level under.

There's some very noticeable issues that bring down the quality from 100% of Super Mario 64's, though. The movement is almost the same, but feels slightly looser, which is not a good thing, but it's only slight. Triple jumping is harder to pull off. In SM64, it feels like you have a wider window for timing the 3rd jump, where in Poi, the first frame or two that would work in SM64 to triple jump instead do your double jump. It's still doable, but feels trickier. Thankfully, it's never really needed, walljumping and double jumping will get you basically anywhere you need to go. Sliding down slopes also just feels awful, but there's only a couple areas where its really an issue.

Hitboxes can be a bit jank, with enemies and especially fire being able to hit you when it feels like they shouldn't. Also, when you get hit by anything, you get bounced up in the air, and it's hard to determine how you'll land. What makes this worse is that getting hit again will have you bounce again, even during your invincibility frames. You won't take damage, but the extended loss of control is very, very irritating.

There's fewer full levels than SM64, although I'm okay with this as it keeps the game from overstaying its welcome. The levels themselves aren't quite as good as SM64, but are overall quite solid. The minigames are mostly fun and quick, although the flight minigame is pretty rough to control. The time limit feels pretty generous to compensate, though.

There's extra collectables in each level in the form of locations, fossils, golden gears, and a costume in each level. Unfortunately, other than the locations, all of these open up through the course of the game, either through buying a shovel for fossils, or collecting enough medals for the gears and costumes. This means having to revisit every stage that you've otherwise fully cleared, which can get a bit tiresome. It's not too bad, and did a 100% clear, but I was starting to feel a bit burnt out by the end.

Overall, Poi is a very good game with a handful of flaws that keep it from truly being a classic. Definitely worth a play if you like Super Mario 64 style games, but probably not one that will leave a lasting impression or having you coming back to replay for years to come.

セールで300円だったがその値段が信じられないほどのボリュームと作り込みであった。

大まかなシステムや雰囲気はほぼスーパーマリオ64で、アクションの軽快さや豊富さも似たものを感じて楽しい。
マップの構造や作り込みも非常に優秀で、箱庭として理想的な「ただ駆け回っているだけで楽しい」を感じることができる。

難易度に起伏が少なく簡単なギミックが多いため、少々締まらなさを感じることがあった。ボス的なここぞというところはもう少し張りがあったほうがよい。
また、ほぼマリオ64なので目新しさはかなり薄め。

セールとはいえ300円で買えるゲームとは思えない良作であった。定価の1000円でも全然高くない。様々な誤解を招く可能性があるが敢えて言おう、僕はバランワンダーワールドと同じくらい楽しめた。

I actually quite enjoyed it. At first I really couldn't get into it but it's got that old school vibe too it with very basic but vibrant models etc. the controls are actually amazing in my opinion with sliding and jumping in time to make you go faster. 伝説の宝を手に入れるため、いろんな場所を駆け回る3Dアクションゲーム。

冒険家を目指す男の子と女の子はある日、かつて世界を股にかけた冒険家だったおじいさんに誘われ、彼が無くしたメダリオン（ストアページのサムネの真ん中のやつ）を集めなおす手助けをする。そして彼が追い求めていた伝説のお宝を探すため、飛行船に乗り冒険に旅立つのであった。

ゲームシステムは大体マリオ64の廉価版みたいな感じ。
ダッシュや壁キック、3段ジャンプといった技を駆使して箱庭ステージの中を駆け回り、目標を達成すればメダリオンがもらえるといった、王道のシステム。真新しさはないが、それがしっかりと作られているので遊んでいて楽しい。
加えて収集要素があり、ステージ内の観光スポット(?)を訪れたりキャラクターの写真を撮ったりと、図鑑を埋める楽しみもある。
操作が身についてくると段々アクロバティックな動きもできるようになり、ステージ内でショートカットできるようになったりと上達する喜びもある。特に移動に関しては変態じみた動きで高速で跳ね回れるようになる…かも。

後、飛行船で飛んでいる状況の大空がハブワールドなのだが、ゲームを進めていくと他の飛行船や浮島が出現し、そこに行くためにパラセーリングを操って一人で飛んでいく。これが中々爽快感があって楽しい。

全体的に楽しいゲームだが。体力が少なくてすぐやられるなどぽつぽつと不満な点もある。しかしスタッフクレジットを見るとかなり少人数で制作されているため、むしろぽつぽつとしか不満点がないのはすごいのではなかろうか。

一目見ただけではビジュアル面で見劣りするかもしれませんが、中身はしっかり面白い良いゲームでした。
多少のなつかしさを感じながら、きっとPoiの世界を好きになれるはず。

There was a review on nintendoeverything that basically said Poi was released at a bad time and didn't add anything new to 3D platformers. It came out at around about the same time as Yooka Laylee, A Hat in Time & Mario Odyssey, so I can see where they're coming from...

However, there is a certain charm about Poi that makes it highly enjoyable and replayable.

The characters have excellent control, fluid movements and satisfying input responses - meaning the character goes where you want them to after you perform an overhead flip, double-jump and dive onto that platform. Pretty impressive for an old-school-inspired 3D platformer. (I've read a few reviews about input lag and missed button responses, but I never experienced any on both wired and wireless controllers)

While not perfect, the camera can be wonky at times and enemy hitboxes can be janky if you don't execute that roll correctly. But if you survived Mario 64, you won't have a problem with this.

The story is pleasant, the settings colourful, the music is upbeat and gives a real sense of adventure, and the world is just so charming that it makes the whole experience very enjoyable, cosy and wholesome.

I'm 50/50 on this one.

It is a 3D-platformer collectathon, which is fun when it clicks. However, these moments are few and far between.

This game consists of main quests, mini games, fetch quests, and platforming challenges.

There are four main maps, two side maps, a default or base location (free roaming in the air all the time), and a last mystery map divided into two parts and a boss battle (this battle felt unnecessary).

It has an open world design (not entirely). I've played with a gamepad without any major issues.

It has a cartoonish looking low poly environment and character designs, and they look colourful and cute.

The goals and collectibles are listed very well in the menu section. So, one won't get lost at any point. I appreciate that.

The music is decent but becomes monotonous after a while. There is some voice work to make a few character sounds. Otherwise, all the interaction is text-based. The story is generic. Two playing character choices are available: a girl or a boy. While not doing a main quest or other side-challenge tasks, one can switch between them at the base location. The player will collect coins to achieve a specific task, but if you die during that, you end up losing all and will start from the beginning or a previous checkpoint. That was quite frustrating.

The enemies are of three types, rehashed in various ways. There is one more, but it appears at the end. One needs to jump on the enemies to beat them. There is no other way. This requires pin-point accuracy and timing, which can be frustrating rather than fun due to some hit-box issues. The bosses lack variety. Two bosses are required to be beaten by kicking stones or bombs at them, but the character will kick the object in a random direction 50% of the time. That was not a good experience.

The jumping (and double jumping) mechanic is good when it works. It also has back-flipping and sliding mechanisms combined with jumps. These extra moves are an annoyance during platforming sections. Because you are trying to do one thing, but instead you end up doing some of these moves and dying during the process sometimes. On top of that, some of the platforming sections are very rage inducing because they don't fit very well with the jumping mechanisms. During the final platforming sections, I died a countless number of times due to this.

After completing the game, there is a new game+ mode, which is a one-hit, one-kill challenge for you (not the enemies). This imbalances the entire game. They just mirrored the maps and reduced the character health to one heart and called it a day. But, the game design is such that the gameplay doesn't sit well with this mode. But, it is required to be completed in this mode if you are a completionist (to get the last achievement). To be honest, this mode has ruined the fun for me.

Overall, I have enjoyed exploring some of the maps and not so much the others. If you are not bothered by getting 100% and want to try this, then get it on sale. Otherwise, you are in for some pain and frustration.

Oh gosh this is a tough rate. I do have some comments that are big cons for me, but ultimately I am positively rating because I do believe the game deserves it, and I really would love to see more from this(these) dev(s)

[b]Pros:[/b]
-Gameplay very reminiscent of 64 or Sunshine. I suppose this could be a con for some, but Sunshine was my childhood and I can certainly feel the love here
-Excellent "extras." From the challenge levels to fossils and location hunting, I loved always having a little something extra to do
-The music absolutely slaps. Period.
-Platforming actually feels pretty nice. Edges are slippery though, so that could have used some touching up

[b]Cons:[/b]
-The enemies kind of suck (no offense). You got a goomba type that needs 2-3 jumps to kill, a goomba type that trails creep, a goomba type that stays still except for its lashing, a goomba type that pops out of the ground (I think you see my pattern here). My biggest problem came specifically from the moles. Sometimes jumping on them killed them, sometimes it killed me. It made me go out of my way to avoid areas where they were. And you truly do not want to hear about the area that's guarded by 6 of those little bastards with rocks
-The bosses are worse. Yes it's possible. All boss fights consist of not getting hit then kicking a projectile which you hope will land. It's tedious, annoying, and feels like a big waste of time
-I loved the end game where you [spoiler]hunt for the stones, but the stone levels were unfortunately hardly challenges at all.[/spoiler]
-Hands down, the biggest downfall for me is the POV. This is a more personal issue, but I am prone to dizziness and motion sickness in video games. This is made 100x worse when the POV is even [i]slightly[.i] off. In this case the view is too low in relation to the character. Obviously they are a mega-corporation with hundreds of combined years of experience, but I never seem to have this issue in a Nintendo game of this kind. Mario nor Kirby ever seem to give me the tummy quakes. I am not a game dev, so I cannot understand the mechanics of how or why this happens, but unfortunately it affected my entire gaming experience and made it so I could only play for no more than 45min at a time.

Poi is quite a well executed Mario 64-esq collectathon/3D platforming game

Since Nintendo doesn't want our money over on PC it often falls to indie devs to bring us similar experiences albiet with smaller scope and budget, on that front Poi delivers quite nicely. Each world feels unique to play and even though i finished the game a while ago now i can remember a lot of the environments and levels, a testament to solid level design in my opinion.

While probably not appreciated by a lot of users i enjoyed the leaderboard system for speed runs and challenges, added some nice replayability to some parts of the game. Bar a couple of frustrating sections and a some bugs here and there i can't fault it too much. It's certainly not blowing anyone away but it's solid at what it's trying to achieve, for me that works.

Very fair pricing taking around 10 hours for all achivements going at a fast pace, i'd wager most people would get even more bang for thier buck with this one, definitely a good pick up here.

Deserved more recognition.
Despite being short (made it 100% in 10h, just 1 achievement remaining because to unlock all achievements you need to beat the game twice), it's a very fun 3D platformer made by a small team that sure loved Mario 64.

A fun, Super Mario 64 inspired platformer. Only 4 main levels but a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of side stuff. Controls are pretty tight with a fun move set and really hits its stride 50% through the game. 100% completion (excluding NewGame+) in about 7 hours. Made by like five people, which is kinda impressive. Great soundtrack as well.

I beat this game at around 6 hours of play time and had a wonderful time with it. Honestly, it's one of the best modern 'nods' to Super Mario 64 that I've played. The most important things to get right in a 3D platformer are the jumping mechanics, and they succeeded. The worlds are bright and colorful - there is a lot to collect, so if you're a fan of collectathons you'll be right at home here. Honestly, don't sleep on this game if you're wanting a nostalgic 3D platformer to relive your childhood.

It's best played on the Steam Deck in my opinion, though you should note that you need to force Proton to get the best experience. By default it runs the native Linux version, and ironically that doesn't run as well (you'll notice that it's a bit stuttery whereas the Proton/Windows version is flawless).

I did have fun with Poi, but i can't deny it is a very flawed game, i think Poi's 2 main problems are

It is too simple, even more simple than Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie, the are no power-ups o even a real combat system.

The secound problem being that Poi lacks a lot of polish, mostly the hitboxes being really wonky, like i said before, there is no combat system, the only way you can defeat enemies is jumping on their heads, but since the hit detection is very inconsistent, half the time instead of defeating an enemy you will take damage, it gets really annoying in new game+, since you only have a hit point, there's pretty much a 50/50 chance you will die every single time you jump on any enemy.

Still, i liked the game enough to even get all achievements, i hope if this game gets a sequel it will be a more polished game.

Poi is some real 3D platformer collectathon goodness. With solid core movement and a nice, responsive camera, it's all really well-made to show off some fun movement (other than maaaybe the final level and the fact that it's pretty easy to get stun-locked by a hit in a way where an enemy will just juggle you until you're dead even though you're supposed to be able to take multiple hits). If you like this genre, Poi nails all the core basics so well you'll have a great time with this. If you're not a huge fan, be aware that Poi is pretty bare bones: it's got a solid core (I would even compare it to Super Mario 64), but there aren't really any gimmicks to change things up and keep the gameplay fresh (a la A Hat in Time or even just Banjo Kazooie), so if you're not the kind who'll just enjoy running around for the sake of running around, this might not be for you.

3D 플랫포머 게임입니다. 1회차에서 모든 메달 모으는데 11시간 정도 걸렸습니다.

게임을 진행하다보면 마리오64를 많이 의식한 모습이 보입니다. 실제로 액션, UI 등 게임에 많은 부분에서 익숙한 모습을 볼 수 있습니다.

그렇다고 64와 완전히 똑같은 게임인가? 하면 그렇진 않습니다. Poi만의 4가지 아기자기하고 독특한 메인 스테이지를 모험하며 숨겨진 요소를 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 보상으로 따라오는 메달은 덤이구요. 메인 스테이지 이외에도 미니 게임과 미니 스테이지도 존재하여 플레이어의 도전 욕구를 자극하기도 합니다.

물론 아쉬운 점도 있습니다. 스토리는 없는 수준이나 마찬가지이고 조작감은 익숙해지는데 시간이 필요합니다. 판정이 애매해서 이게 왜?, 이건 왜?를 외칠 때도 있었습니다. [spoiler] 그리고 갑자기 전혀 다른 게임이 된 최종보스... [/spoiler]

하지만, 정가 10000원(전 할인해서 2500원)이라는 가격은 앞선 단점을 덮기에는 충분하다고 생각합니다. 가볍게 즐기기 좋은 게임입니다.

A love letter to the 3D platformers of the late 90s and an absolute gem of a game. Imaginative, colorful, and entirely light-hearted, with a charming aesthetic and solid mechanics, I can't think of a single complaint beyond, maybe, just a little more content.

Oh, and being teleported back to the ship every time you get a medal. That was annoying.

But other than that, five stars.

Given the price it's pretty solid. Controls/available moves feel like they tried to copy mario but they failed to really nail them.

The story, well I think there was a story. Not much else to say here, it was not really needed to 100% the game though.

Overall it's an easy 3d platformer, that looks ok and plays ok. I don't regret the 4$ I spent on it. Had 10 hours of relaxing and fun time with it.

There is a new game+ mode, so there is a replay potential, it's just not something I will go for immediately after finishing the normal mode.

I LOVE COLLECTATHONS!!! Collectathon is my favorite genre, usually platformers, but I also LOVE playing GTA Online and collecting the cards and figures. If you like 3D platformers, Poi is a good pick. If you love 3D collectathon platformers/games in general, then Poi is a GREAT pick.

If you like games where the objective is to explore and find as many hidden items as possible, Poi definitely is not a bad one. Much like Super Mario Oddyssee, A Hat in Time or Banjo-Kazooie its a kid-friendly game with a lot of hidden depth to it. The positives are that its genuinely fun, there's a lot to do and it can be a bit charming. The negatives though include some blandness in enemy/npc design and slightly off slip-detection. Still, at this price it's definitively a must play if you like games of this nature. Additionally, one can get a fresh challenge with the New Game + mode, which literally flips the entire world of Poi to the other side.
