The best version is the Sega Genesis version. But this'll do.

This game is really excellent and I'm surprised how much time I've spent on such an old game. It's fun and relaxing, with different strategies and depth that is not immediately apparent. Note, this is not the "newer" Sid Meyers Pirates! from 2004.
I wanted to play this game because I played the remake up and down for the last 20 years. But this version is just unplayable. It's mostly down to the crappy controls, which are definitely not a game issue itself. The boat doesn't turn when you press the keys, sometimes you really smash them during naval combat and it's a miracle if it moves. And then you oversteer by accident. I lost so many battles just because of that.
The fencing, which is definitely a game internal issues and can't be blamed on controls, gives 0 feedback if you're doing good or not. I haven't at all figured out how to be good at it.Or even decent. I think I have lost 20 duels and won maybe 1 or 2, and then I was just button smashing. It's totally unclear if you land a hit or not, what sound means "blocked" and what sounds means "hit".
Lastly, I can't really tell what attack the other guy is doing, but that is honestly a player issue. Still all put together makes a terrible game that could be a lot better if they just fixed the damn naval battle steering!!!

Terrible - cannot play it on Mac or Steam deck. Loads on steam deck but cant even scroll the whole screen with cursor so makes it unplayable. Loved the game so extremely disappointed I cant play it though it says it is compatible with both.

Horrible controls, HORRIBLE screen tearing, the bottom half of the screen is basically just black. (on Linux, default Mint installation). Refunded. Shame, such a nice game.

I was almost put off buying this, despite the cheap price, because of the comments.
After purchasing it I found it was well worth it! The game speed was fine & the game runs as the original did. It can be controlled using the left/right mouse buttons & the spacebar, although I do use the number pad for swordfights & land movement.
The copy protection works by having you identify a flag of the first pirate you encounter. I looked up the end of the old Pirates Gold! manual for this, although the flags are also historically accurate.
Pirates! as an open-world game is far less dated than its contemporaries. However it is still dated. This is the second version, the first was from 1987, this version 1993, & a remake in 2004. The 2004 version may be better unless, like me, you have fond memories of this version or an interest in older game design. Pirates! in general is a masterclass in huge amounts of content using few resources.

Keyboard/mouse controls are buggy and sluggish, making the game needlessly difficult. Sid Meier's Pirates is a better choice.

Not my favorite Sid Meier's game, but it was fun to play many years ago. Today, not so much. It's okay to play it for a nostalgia trip, but I wouldn't have enough persistence to play it for hours or all night.

I have a hard time with this game. I just can't wrap my head around the navigation and figuring out where to go to do what I'm trying. I'm sure if I play for longer I'll get the hang of it, so maybe one day I'll come back to this.
But I still do recommend this even though it's not quite my taste in games. It's a classic and I can understand why a certain kind of person would love it, I'm just not that kind of person.

wow, such a disappointment, sticky sailing controls and fast moving ships make it nearly unplayable, no damage meter from gun fights is a major omission that is painful, the ease of which the big ships can sail away is also a bummer, so far its a complete waste of money and time, guess I should find the original game on GoG site, must be better than this mess
Playing just pirates classic on dosbox launch option, have had none of the issues others have reported; it's the original game and it's great.

i am 41, and i remember playing this on my Grandmothers old HP 386. game was on a 3.5" floppy, we got it at Target, back in the early 90's maybe late 80"s .
but it was a GREAT throwback !

This game is great, a remake of the 1987 game that I played when I was a child. Other reviewers dislike this game because they say that the controls are delayed, and it is clunky. The solution to this is to moderate the CPUs in the Dos Box Daum environment. Press Alt tab to get out of the game. Then go to the top of the dosbox environment, and set a fixed CPU rate. On my midrange, modern gaming laptop, the cycles for optimum performance for me are 10000. Then, you can save state (Alt+F5) to save the setting. Alt +F9 will allow you to load it.
I was never able to enjoy this game before realizing what the error is, and now, I AM LOVING IT. It pretty much lets you do what you want, and is fun to fight the overwhelming odds of sacking Havana in a sloop. Modern games are often too much. This game is just the right amount.

I totally resent thumbing down one of the greatest games ever made, however.... The Amiga version was faaarrr superior. Sunk hundreds of hours after school on that game as a kid. Loved reading the manual for hints in the game etc..

the original sid meier's pirates 1987/89 is still my favorite game. i still own the original box, map, disks, manual.
ive gone to explore other versions of the original, NES, Sega, japanese PC-88 & PC-98, Amiga, and of them all i believe the IBM-PC Dos (and dos booter) versions are the best example of this work of art.
the difficulty levels are fairly balanced, simple progression, simulated high seas adventure, economics and politics.
this game taught me more about the Caribbean geography, locations, history and intrigue than any textbook or school class room; even the History channel documentaries are pale comparisons of the level of detail.
with the timeframe a back drop of classical music parades through your PC speaker (or Tandy) as you explore towns and navigate dangerous waters. hoping to your last breath that someone more experienced and powerful than you does not take everything you own, especially your life. your main goal is to save your family and aquire massive fame and wealth. nothing is more challenging than life itself.

I don'r remember this as being quite the bugfest that it is. From loading saved games that go to a black screen to embarkig and disembarking on land which can put you into an infinite loop that forces you to quit by alt-tabbing. The bugs ruin gameplay.

A childhood favorite, but when I played it just now I got to a point where it froze when I was trying to talk to someone. I had to use task manager to exit. Applied for a refund immediately.

This is an original, authentic game from the dawn of personal computers. It's a lot more fun, and addictive, than you might expect. It is one of the top games from the era it was made. For old timers, like me, the game is also a great nostalgia fix.

If you played the original(s) and want to relive that expirience, buy this (but only at a sale) it contains the Dos Versions of the first pirates and the Pirates Gold Plus. Both versions are very good in terms of a pirates game.
If you never played Pirates before go for the 2004 remake of Sid Meier's Pirates, the gameplay of the remake is pretty much the same, not as good as this versions though, some things got left out or worsened, but I personally prefer the remake to this versions.
And beware, both ! versions have copyprotection which you need to search on the web first before you can play the games. An IDIOTIC oversight by the puplishers not to include them (well the manual of the Gold version is included, so its only the 88 version they forgot if you want to split hairs)
But overall I recommend to buy this games.
It makes me so sad to report that this game doesn't work. You can play for a little while but it just crashes. It's heartbreaking, because it's a great game when fully functional.

La vidéo de présentation est beaucoup plus belle que le jeu lui-même, dont les graphismes font assez "sales".
Pas d'explications concernant les touches utilisées, débrouillez-vous. Et quand vous découvrez qu'aucune touche ne permet de quitter le jeu, il ne vous reste plus que Alt+Tab et fermer la fenêtre, ce qui n'est pas très propre.
Le jeu est bien sûr vieux, mais on aurait pu envisager un petit lifting...?
La piraterie et le commerce ne concernent que "denrées" : la nourriture, les cargaisons, le sucre (pourquoi le sucre est à part?), les canons, les bateaux et les hommes d'équipage. Que vous commerciez et que vous attaquiez des bateaux, c'est ce que vous pouvez récupérer. On en fait vite le tour.
Et vu que la maniabilité (bateau, équipage à terre ou combat sur le pont) n'est pas au rdv, rapidement on se lasse. Même pour les nostalgiques, je conseille de laisser tomber. Vos souvenirs seront forcément plus beaux que la réalité.
Sid Meier's Pirates! Gold works exactly as I remember it, from hours and hours played as a child. It seems that the issues that others were having with DOSBox have now been fixed - the music plays normally and the ships move at the appropriate speed. The only issue it has is the DRM (based on identifying pirates flags - this helps: http://www.goodolddays.net/file/file%2C89/id%2C229/type%2Cdocs/ ). The game feels more freeform than its successor, and is still a great way to explore the Spanish Main and become a buccaneering legend.
This game back in the DOS days when it came on about 15 bajillion 3.5 floppy disks was the bomb. I used to sit up for 48 hours straight guzzling jolt cola to stay awake (because that was the one and only and first ENERGY drink aside of strong coffee), no lie. If you don't know what Jolt cola is, well that's your loss....lol I'll tell you like my Mom told me.... LOOK IT UP!!!!! AHEMM.... The game, right... let's see. well you are on a ship see in the carribean, see and you are either a loyalist or you are a black bloody pirate who takes any ship or town he comes to and he rapes the town and pillages the women.....AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately as others have already said, the game is unplayable. The controls are lagging and work half the time or less.
If some update is going to fix it, I will change the review since the game is great.

Que de bons souvenirs ! C'est toujours plaisant à jouer. Par contre, attention à la protection anti-copie donc il faut répondre correctement à la question du drapeau en début de partie.
Autre point important, le contrôle du bateau au clavier ne fonctionnant pas très bien j'ai lu dans le manuel que l'on peut utiliser le bouton droit et gauche de la souris pour tourner. Et ça marche très bien! Mieux que la clavier en fait.
J'ai dépensé 2 euros par nostalgie mais je m'amuse bien.
Loved the original and loved this version even more. Had a PowerMac with softwindows on a SCSI external hard drive just to play this game this 18-22 years ago. Before that a friend had it and we played whenever we could. Can't believe I can play it again.

Incluye la versión original (87) y la Gold (93), la cual tiene una mejora gráfica y poco más.
Yo prefiero mil veces la versión original, sus dibujos y el mapa por donde te mueves me gustan más y es a la versión que jugué de niño durante incontables horas.
Es un juego antiguo, 1987, pero tiene mucha miga. Es muy extraño que por aquellas saliese algo así. Tiene magia, metafóricamente hablando. Muy adelantado para su época, una profundidad inusual, muchas cosas por hacer, varias formas de jugar. Un juego único e irrepetible.
El problema está en que a mí no me salía para elegir una versión u otra, directamente me iba al Gold. Tras mucho probar e investigar lo resolví cambiando de nombre unos archivos. De esta forma ya me abre el juego original directamente.
También hay que buscar en los archivos del juego la hoja para poner la clave que te pide al principio.
As many of the previous reviewers have said before, I had the Atari ST version of this game and absolutely loved it. Seeing it with a 70% discount offer, I thought 'Why not?'... Unfortunately, the controls make the game truly unplayable in my opinion (at least you can ,with a little digging, get all the different captain flags to get around the anti-piracy questions), but the controls lag to a degree where sea battles are impossible, and being a pirate, that's pretty important!
So, sadly, I'd have to recommend NOT buying this at any price until the controls are fixed.

dont buy, i am a hardcore pirates fan but this game is unplayable. not ment for new computers, i can only guess steam has it on here to get a buck. DO not buy , plus steam is not good at refunds, they just give you automated responses, they have no class and decide to make customers mad and not refund the $5 game, even when they know it doesnt work. ugh bad steam, bad steam...

It crashes constantly or hangs without warning. Didn't even bother to supply the actual copy protection stuff for the original version included. Ended up going to an old wiki forum to source it so I could at least play the game.
Tried to contact Steam and they take no responsibility as it was a third party who is responsible for the port.
Waste of time
I love this game...however after a few hours it started crashing and you cant save your progress it will play fine for 30 minutes then when you are really getting into it it crashes. Steem will not refund either. Big dissappointment. It crashes at differnet times during a sword fight or during a trip to the merchant. Super lame.
A sadly terrible port of a wonderful game. Used to play for hours on a Commodore 64, no worries. Playing now on a bleeding edge gaming laptop and it's bloody AWFUL. Controls work when they want to, which is to say when you need them to respond they don't. Swordplay has devolved to "just mash a bunch of buttons and pray". Really disappointed.
At least there's no gay pirate dancing...

I played a TON of this back in the day, but the emulator that's under the hood of this modern port is... well, it sure ain't good. While swordfights were always a bit slow, the ship navigation and combat wasn't this laggy in the good old days, on the Windows 3.1 toaster I originally played it on.
This computer is literally hundreds of times faster than the original PC I played this on, and yet performance is so much worse... This version of the game dumps Moore's law on its head.
So bad controls, they are not working and you cant play the stupid game.

A true classic. A great game that I remember playing long ago, I think on the SNES. Seems to hold up well, though there are a few foibles with a direct port (when the game had an anti-piracy feature that requires use of the game manual). Still, decent enough.

This is my personal favorite version of Sid Meier's Pirates! and would absolutely get a positive review if it wasn't for one crucial thing - the dosbox configuration for the game is horrible. It cause the music to get messed up and the game to run awfuly. This makes purchasing this thing currently a serious waste of money, as the game is effective unplayable.
If this changes at any point, the game is gorgeous, and you also get the original DOS version bundled in. Pirates! is, in any incarnation, one of the best videogames ever. Provided it runs properly on your machine, of course.

Pirates Gold is quite an interesting experience for me. You go on adventures to grow in rank through your starting country while looting gold, stealing cargo and ships, attacking a town, and more. I found looting to be very satisfying. Part of the reason it's so addictive is it takes work to earn gold, everything you do is risky meaning you could easily screw up and lose everything you have, but this fact makes me want to keep at it to see how much I can get before I lose. Another positive about the game is the variation. You will sail across the sea one moment, and sword fight the next.
You will also fire at ships and attempt to board them, a similar mechanic has you attacking towns and i'm not a fan of this. The idea is using the wind to dodge shots from forts and get to land. But the wind changes at random. The idea is to leave if the wind isn't in your favor, but leaving can be just as hard which has got me killed. The graphics and sound design get the job done for a dosgame, though I found my crew yelling YO-HO-HO when they see a ship to be really annoying. Those are my biggest issues with the game. Now the steam version does have issues, it ran very slow to the point of being unplayable. You need to mess with the cycles in the config to fix this.
This was a nice suprise. While not perfect, I personally had a blast. It was addictive and fun.

Попробывал обе версии, 1987 и 1993 года. Игра не имеет финала и это сильно меня огорчает. Бороздить морские просторы и нападать на испанские корабли это интересно и меня увлекло на 3 часа. Но больше здесь делать нечего. Пополняешь ядра, еду чтоб не помер с голоду экипаж. Понравилось брать корабль на абордаж, т.к. в этом случае включается режим фехтования. И если у тебя не кривые руки, то победив капитана вражеского судна забираешь всё добро включая часть его выжившего экипажа. Игра завершается тогда когда ты сам захочешь. Уходишь на пенсию хоть через 3 часа, хоть через 33.

Jeżeli na poważnie chcecie pograć w Sid Meier's Pirates, to lepiej zagrajcie w remake o tym samym tytule z 2005 roku. Wersja z 1987 roku jest na dzisiaj mało grywalna. A szkoda, bo wystarczyłoby tylko parę rzeczy podrasować. Bo tam wciąż jest ten klimat, którego przez 30 lat nikomu nie udało się podrobić... Niestety remake z 2005 roku chociaż bardziej przystaje do dzisiejszych standardów, to ma jeden minus - zaloty do córek gubernatorów i śluby z nimi zostały w nowej wersji bezsensownie zastąpione irytującymi tanecznymi piruetami. Ech.
Rada 3:
Tę wersję Pirates z 1987 roku warto kupić z jednego powodu - z nostalgii. Myślę, że warto mieć to dzieło w swojej bibliotece.

This was not the version I expected. I had purchased the newest version but Steam lost my informaion somehow so I tried to buy it again and got this terrible laggy dos version. Avoid this unless you like the old vga DOS version of games from the 80s...
NEW ONE IS BETTER
Memories. I played this (well, the original non-gold version) on the C64 back in the late 80s. I played this on my first PCs in the 90s. It is high up on every list of "fav games of all time" I ever made.
Other people, when you show them a map of the Caribbean, they think "holidays" or "fruity cocktails". Me, I am reminded of a brown-greenish parchment map that came with the C64 version of THIS game..
So buy this for a trip down memory lane.
However, don't buy this, if you've never played this before, because even though it is an absolutely fantastic game in terms of concept and execution, you will not like the way it looks and handles (also, the DOSBOX emultor may require some fiddling before the game runs properly on modern hardware).
By modern standards, this is likely to be frustrating. By my standards, it's one of the most gloriously delicious experiences to be had in front of a screen.
