Really big fan of this game. It's so incredibly unique and fun and creative, playing it has been an absolute treat for me. I'm yet to feel bored playing Picayune Dreams, as I continue to find secrets and hidden content in every run. Big recommend from me if you're into the bullet hell/hoard survival genres. It gives me a good kind of overstimulation when I play it, if that makes any sense.
This game absolutely deserves to be considered one of the greats of the genre, and I hope more people discover it alongside the release of Endacopia.
There's a world of difference between a genuinely strange product of a unique mind and a game made by a normal person that merely affects the aesthetic of weirdness. Unfortunately this is much more the latter, but still a fun time.

at first i thought: oh, seems fun, i have to try it.
then i thought: oh, progression feels nice, and story is intriguing.. i have to beat it to see the ending.
then: oh, i'm good enough to get 40 more achievements, i have to play it a bit longer.
and then: oh, these last 14 achievements make sense, i have to try these strategies i did not think of before.
i've hundred-percented Picayune Dreams now and cannot recommend it enough. while i'm not a big fan of the bullet heaven genre, i really enjoy games that gracefully ignore usual rules. Picayune Dreams makes you wonder, it brings you surprises, it wants you to avoid spoilers and guides. it does not explain every speck of dust to you. it does not try to please everyone. and wow, it costs a fiver. buy it.

As an avid fan of railshooters, bullet hells, and shmups; I picked this game up assuming the hoard mechanics might end up disrupting my ability to get into a good flowstate, or that the bullet hell mechanics would get too intense for my crappy PC. Or worse, I feared that I'd never finish the game. But itching for something to scratch my itch, I picked this up and didn't regret a thing. None of these fears ended up being an issue for me. This is a genuinely fantastic game, and well worth it. Please spend your money on it.

[h3]Good Survivor-Like With A Hint Of Bullet Hell[/h3]
I am a big fan of bullet-hell games but not survivor-likes. While this game is both of those, this small game is really good and cheap while having its own artistic touch although this can be also a detriment for casual players. Having players start without a tutorial or even stated objective or motivation is truly bold and I like that. Not to mention upgrade descriptions are in a coding language which is truly wild. Trusting in player's intelligence, playing and experimenting is rather simple and straightforward where players have to beat 5 stages of enemy hordes each with their own boss while trying to survive and optimize builds. The joy of building an unstoppable bullet hell machine that can tank frame rates or that addiction of one more run is definitely here.
As unique the aesthetic and opening are though, the story did seem stereotypical of mishandling of (child) soldiers against an unknown extraterrestrial life. It does not comment much on this aside from creating a heirarchy of cannon fodder based on meritocracy, inhumane treatment and forced labor but mostly narrative setup. While the ambiguity and creative glitches of memories are nice, the ending and true ending, though, I feel miss the mark in both its tone and message. Even if humanity may brings its own undoing, desperation does breed cruelty but without context only brings nihilism which I feel is not worth telling. Even the characters are not too deep or characterized well enough to discuss. I did have trouble recognizing faces with the 2D sprite art which is strange as the game character portraits are rendered in 3D that also changes with optional skins. How the game loop happens or how the minimalistic interface serve the narrative might not yield that much value as well. Still, I appreciate the overall experience it brings.
Since I am not playing this for hundred of hours, I can only give some of my general impressions or experience. Coming from recent bullet hell games, I kinda feel the base movement speed is slow being aware the difficulty is balanced around it. The overall difficulty seems on the easier side so I was more interested in the narrative initially. I wish I knew earlier that the collections screen provide unlockable weapons or run objectives which I just thought was only for achievements or trophies. While I did praise the upgrade descriptions, I kinda hate it then that it shows what it does on the collection screen which makes the obfuscation moot. Even if I dislike the permanent progression elements of these type of games, there is some merit here in this game only having limited upgrade points and getting more for each run beaten on a higher difficulty modifier. The passive upgrade screen, though, is a bit hard to read and grasp due to its minimal aesthetics but the mean joke upgrade is funny. The post-game run is where the challenge is but at the same time where the run is typically broken and boring just standing around until the next boss. In a way, I think it needs more to be truly great.
Make no mistake though, this small game is definitely value for money and worth checking out.
I loved this game. It was very satisfying and I am sad that I beat it too early. I expected the game to be a lot more difficult; it only took me 6 rounds. I wish I would have taken the time to upgrade my stats. Hopefully in the future there will be some sort of expansion and I wouldn't even be mad if I had to pay for it.

That's this game, the artstyle is so fun but so weird I'm confident it can eadily overstimulate an adhd patient and I love it because of that but if you enjoy actually understanding what's on your screen, this game is not for you.

This game is very simple, when you get down to it. The fun of games like Picayune Dreams is that simplicity, however. And the unique visual style, mixed with what it does differently from its contemporaries like Vampire Survivors, not to mention that absolutely divine soundtrack, make it an absolutely amazing game.
I only have 23-ish hours in the game, and in that time I burned through every single achievement. It's the kind of game that got me hooked. It isn't technically balanced, but I don't think that really matters. Every run ends eventually, but in a much more interesting way than normal. You push this game to its limits, and it yours. The weapons are creative, varied and fun to use and learn, and when you combine that with the Suits you can unlock as well as the infinitely(?) scaling Overdrive modifiers, you get a forever game.
Even though I've already 100%'ed this game, I plan to go back and challenge myself. Take on dailies on occasion, beat Overdrive 5 all bosses on every Suit, all the bells and whistles I can think of. It's such a good game to just have... on, when nothing else is happening.
I will say that it is very good there's a lot of ideas in the game itself for challenging your abilities, because aside from doing runs and getting the unlocks, there's not much else to do. Nothing in a similar vein to The Binding of Isaac's Challenges window, or the same with Balatro. Instead the game offers to simply keep opening up forever, until there is nothing more to give and then lets you do whatever the hell you want. I personally would love a Challenges system, even if the reward was just more achievements or some simple cosmetic or something.
The narrative is very fascinating, as it leaves just enough to make its point on its themes about the government and the innate unviability on the idea of "sacrificing the few to save the many". It doesn't go harshly in-depth, nor does it need to. Its three endings alone convey what it wanted to very nicely, with packets of fun secrets to keep dedicated fans guessing and headcanons and what have you forever and ever. I'm still surprised at how... kind and gentle its True Ending is, but I like that. I think I just needed that at this time in my life. And the other two endings are so bleak, it sorta... balances out.
Play this game, see if you like it, then play it until your brain don't work no more. That's how I did it, and that's how I intend to do it. Absolutely a new comfort game of mine, and a new favorite. I love this game so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ much. (And on higher Overdrive levels past Mortality 25, don't worry about the lag. I consider it a feature at this point.)
Its a vampire survivors type game, so fun and addictive with an interesting story and also the soundtracks is a banger.
This is a real gem of the Survivors-like genre with the added benefit of some unique storytelling that makes it easy to recommend at such a reasonable price.
Excellent surreal visual style that's compounded by a strange presentation of information, both in terms of story and UI. The whole experience is mysterious as a new player and is really fun to dive into blind. I love the variety of weapons and upgrades, the hilarious old school 3D enemies that seem drawn from a grab bag of nonsense, and the bleak, dystopian messaging of it all.

picayune dreams is by far the best rougelite ive ever played. i absolutely love everything about it: the amazing soundtrack that always hits regardless of the current level of action, the upgrades that all have their own identity, the big skill tree where every node is unique, the bosses that have actually interesting and challenging attack patterns, the story that made me constantly ask questions, the surreal art style, the affordable price of the game, and a whole host of other things. i question myself as to why i didnt buy the game sooner. If you DIDN'T like "vampire survivors" or "20 mins 'til dawn" or similar bullet-hell/bullet-heaven roguelikes, PLAY THIS GAME.
Picayune Dreams expands on the ideas of these games so perfectly in every aspect.
For example, an issue in other similar games is that once you become strong enough the game becomes an idler with no difficulty fighting hordes. However on most Picayune runs, hordes are broken up by a boss every 5 or so minutes, many of which are EXTREMELY difficult on initial runs of the game ( or I'm just terrible at the game ). These bosses require you to think ahead on builds, often having to lose AOE damage for hard one unit damage. This balance will either give you just enough breathing room on runs to tough it out or you'll mess up, tipping the scales of the damage types and ending up devoured by the horde. Another aspect perfected by Picayune is the weapon variety and builds.
I've never considered an item to be entirely outmatched by another as there is ALWAYS a moment for each weapon to shine.
SUITS:
each unlockable suit will fundamentally choose how your run's beginning will pan out, however most suits will even out after a while (with some exceptions). Each suit feels like one of the game's mechanics pushed to its absolute maximum. Suits range from gimmicky to flexible, tanky to frail, risky to easy-breezy. The "PERFECTED" suit is one of my favourites, limiting your build to just ONE unique item [i] of your choice [/i] .
SKILLS:
Skill trees often feel crippling to not max out in games, however, Picayune's skill tree delivers PERFECTLY. Many skills were extremely specific with seemingly miniscule upsides... until you found a combo. The skill tree, suit and weapon combos felt like a michelin star dish with flavours mixed masterfully. However, like me, Ramsay didn't make it big without his fair share of stinky goyslop. Most runs ended in a sour mix of completely backwards combos because I couldn't read the item descriptions as they only give you the RAW CODE before pickup.
STORY:
Had me shivering in my boots trying to piece together the fate's of Picayune's crew.
Character interactions felt realer than most roguelike's. cutscenes were fairly good, no complaints.
MUSIC!1!!!!!!:
MILKYPOSSUM IS A GENIUS!!! Every track is so nicely molded to immerse me in every scene. Secret and final boss themes create a daunting atmosphere for new encounters.
I'm still yet to mention Milkypossum's hypnotising breakcore tracks throughout every horde area. Chaotic noise compliments the chaotic visuals fantastically. Tracks such as "Ejecta", "Hypernova", and "Interstellar" are her best examples of hardcore tracks in bossfights. Very few games leave their songs playing in my head long after getting stomped by the boss. This game pushed me to go listen to her other albums (7stages, NEET EP) which were somehow EVEN BETTER than Picayune's tracks.
SECRETS AND MINI DETAILS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
Picayune Dreams went out its way to add so much unique dialogue, secrets, and easter eggs that the game feels as much like a treasure hunt as a video game. Achievement runs NEVER felt tedious, however 100%ing did need a few wiki searches.

The perfect combination of chaos and power. Being able to get upgrades and shred through enemies whilst also feeling it's just barely enough to get you by. I personally have never played many games in the vampire survivors like genre, but I'd like to imagine this is one of the better ones. There is still a sense of progression even when you die as you get to level up new skills and maybe just maybe change your route next time.
All this while telling you a story bit by bit that only made me want to get farther to finish it

Found the soundtrack before the game and its what actually made me want the game, genuinely the music is tied with the lore aspect as my favorite parts.
The way the lore is delivered is so good in my opinion, it doesn't do it in a fully linear way, it doesn't feed you information but still tells you just enough to keep wanting to learn and play. I've died many times just to keep playing just because I want to fully complete the game and because the combat is so well done for its genre.
The only problem is with opening the actual application, it usually crashes quite a bit before properly opening but personally I think it's worth it for a game that's only $5 and that has such well made content.
I dont really enjoy games of this genre but I think all of the aspects and unique characteristics of it truly makes me love it.

第一次看见游戏里的物品描述直接把代码端上来的（虽然应该不是真代码），这股压根没想过怎么本地化的狂劲儿，跟游戏的音乐（据说是碎核？）和审美风格如出一辙，爱了。
相比其他类幸存者游戏，这个游戏有正经的剧情线和多结局，而且每次跟boss的对话会有所不同。有些剧情和表现手法会有点恐怖，不过也很有意思，反正我非常吃超现实叙事这一套。对我来说唯一的缺点可能就是有些文字跳得太快、对非英语母语者不太友好了。
另外感觉类幸存者的怪物潮放在这种面对怪异和未知的恐怖、孤军奋战的背景下，超级契合氛围，非常天才。

40 hours later into the game I have managed to get all 140 achievements for Picayune Dreams. This is such a beautiful and satisfying game with very good design from top to bottom. Picayune Dreams is probably the best game of its genre, I don't think there will ever be anything of a vampire survivors game that can ever scratch the same itch.
Truly a gem of a game, timeless and perfectly cute and scary all at the same time. Perfect. Perfect, perfect, perfect.

Сами достижения не очень напряжные, и открываются в основном просто по мере прохождения, но для получения 100% гайды мастхев
Solid "survivors-like" with cool theme.
Can be a bit frustrating due to some upgrades being weaker than others, but you need to use them to unlock more. (Parasight, Digiwatch, Flamethrower and a few others are really good). Also auto-aim is not default (highly recommend it be on most of the time)
I "beat" the game by sniping the bosses with +20 flamethrower and Parasight with auto-aim, I would have evaporated otherwise.
There is WAY more to see, true ending, extra bosses, more items; I'll keep playing to see how far I can get!
