Storyline

Phoenix Point: Year One Edition is the definitive version of the acclaimed strategy game from the creator of X-COM, collecting all previous DLC, updates, and additional content. The Earth has been overrun. A mutating, alien menace threatens the last remnants of mankind. Only the Phoenix Project, a secret organization of the best minds and bravest soldiers left on earth, can repel the aliens and reverse the inevitable. It's up to you to lead the Phoenix Project: research and develop new technologies and techniques, explore a ravaged globe, build your bases, manage resources, and fight hard battles. But you won't be alone. Factions, including the corporatist New Jericho, the indecisive Synedrion, and the fanatical Disciples of Anu, as well as offshoot subfactions, have their own values and view of the Pandorans. You can choose to work with factions via Phoenix Point's diplomacy system, or you can simply crush all around you with military might. No matter what you choose, it won't be an easy victory.

fui jogar Phoenix Point achando que seria tipo “XCOM, só que diferente”… e acabei entrando num pesadelo estratégico onde os aliens basicamente fazem faculdade pra aprender a me counterar.

Sério. Aqui não é só você evoluindo — os inimigos também evoluem… e parece que eles estão sempre um passo à frente. Você começa feliz, dando tiro em uns monstrinhos tranquilos… e algumas missões depois tá enfrentando um bicho que parece um camarão mutante com sniper, escudo e ódio no coração.

E o combate? Meu amigo… esquece aquela precisão “mais ou menos”. Aqui você aponta manualmente e mesmo assim consegue errar de um jeito impressionante. É tipo: 90% de chance… errou. Aí o inimigo vira, acerta um crítico impossível e você só aceita seu destino.

E a base? Parece que você tá gerenciando uma startup em crise durante o apocalipse. Falta recurso, falta soldado, falta esperança… e ainda tem várias facções brigando entre si enquanto o mundo acaba. Clima leve.

Ah, e as decisões…
Você tenta ser o cara bonzinho, ajudar todo mundo… e descobre que agradar uma facção significa irritar outra. No final, você não sabe se tá salvando o planeta ou só escolhendo quem vai te odiar menos.

Mas o melhor (ou pior) é quando você monta aquele esquadrão perfeito, cheio de equipamento top… entra na missão confiante… e em dois turnos tudo virou caos absoluto. Plano? Nunca nem vi.

No fim das contas, Phoenix Point é aquele jogo que te desafia, te pune e depois pergunta: “e aí, vai tentar de novo?”

E você vai.

Porque no fundo… você acha que dessa vez vai dar certo.

I am not particularly good at games, but I do like a challenge sometimes. With my level of skill its certainly a challenge. Have yet to beat the game, there is an awful lot to keep track of, so if you have good organisational skills you will probably really enjoy this. I am on my 4th playthrough with only a moderate chance of final success. If I cannot do it on this run-through, its mod time! Excellent game, very engaging, but maybe could use an easier mode than 'Rookie', Novice maybe?

Compared to when I first got this game a few years ago, the current version is much more polished. The difficulty curve is much more reasonable, many aspects are easier to control, and the mysterious hit rate issue of Xcom is gone. Overall, it's truly a worthwhile Xcom-like game to play.

Han corregido muchas cosas, al principio era muy complicado, pero con los DLCs lo he vuelto a probar este año y es una versión mejorada de XCOM. Mejor sistema de disparo, una historia muy interesante con facciones más profundas, una progresión global que hace más realista la lucha por la supervivencia, sistemas de personajes paralelos (no todo son tu grupo de mercenarios, hay combate aéreo, vehículos, etc.).

Creo que el juego hace un trabajo a la hora de expandir el concepto de XCOM horizontalmente muy bueno pero en profundidad no lo cambia. Sigue siendo el mismo combate contra una raza alienígena por la supervivencia en la tierra con un grupo de profesionales con tecnología avanzada. Eso sí, reitero, en lo que respecta a mecánicas es una mejora clara.

Creo que tiene problemas en la ejecución, pero vale la pena si te gusta XCOM.

Puede ser un juego frustrante si no avanzas del modo correcto, pero cuando le coges el truco, engancha.
Cosas buenas:
-El disparo a zonas del cuerpo, sin porcentajes de acierto. Estupenda idea.
-La infinidad de maneras de jugar tu partida y, por lo tanto, la re-jugabilidad.
-Entraña dificultad en casi todas las fases de la partida.
Cosas malas:
-Los mapas son pequeños y, prácticamente, te encuentras enemigos desde el primer turno, con lo que se pierde la fase de posicionamiento de los dos bandos. Es un sálvese quien pueda.
-Los mapas son un poco repetitivos, pero tampoco es un drama.
-Los DLC's no son nada del otro mundo, casi todos bastante prescindibles, a mi modo de ver.
En definitiva, un digno sucesor de XCOM, que no es poco.

Игра стала лучше с релиза но все равно сильно проигрывает геймплейно xcom 1 и 2. Те гораздо чище геймплейно и карты чувствуются менее замкнутыми.

Клево сделано, что игру можно пройти на 3 концовки (минимум) и пока ты к ним идешь у тебя будет отличатся геймплей по исследованиям и оборудованию. Прикольно что DLC много контента добавляют (который к сожалению слевается в кашу немного).

Не понравились постоянные рандомные подкрепления врагу. Слабо сделанные базы игрока. Общее ощущение неотполированности и ублюдский UX особенно по отношению к исследованиям. Супер неудобно сравнивать снаряжение и понимать, что лучше а что хуже + визуально например броня очень похожая.

Фанатам хчома, которые прошли его несколько раз, для разнообразия взять можно
но желательно по скидке

Got the game 2.5 years ago, didn't like it (played too long for a refund). Tried again and still didn't like it. The gameplay loop just doesn't feel right. Explore for resources, get too many materials but never enough tech. Too many research options that take way too long to get and are mostly filler for +10% damage on a worm that you can one shot. Line of sight based previews for who I can shoot doesn't really work when I move my guy and, yeah I could shoot the guy, but the only thing to shoot is his shoulder.
It tried to be xcom and missed the mark for me, I want to give tftw a try but I'm just so over this game.

The people who designed myrmidon should really not be allowed to get near any decision making or game designing task. they are simply the worst designed ennemies in any game ever and ruin the game by themselves.
Not playing this game again until I find a mod to remove them from the game, since the devs have been to stupid to do it themselves when every criticism of their game since launch talked about this particular ennemy.

Just finished the game on Veteran. It was my second run, the first one was when the game was just released and it was abandoned for a while. Now, 6 years later I know why: despite many great ideas, the combination of those just makes game boring. yeah, there is a lot inside, weapons, soldier classes, enemies, but it all just doesn't sum up properly. The in-game world may look fantastic, but eventually it is dead.
The final mission is an exercise for a masochist.

Nein Empfehle ich nicht, X-Com war gut Das hir? Enemy Spamming endlos. Egal was man macht es hat nichts mit tackik zu tun es ist Pures Stressen des Players man wird von ALLEM angegriffen weil ALLES sofort Alamiert ist. Dan wird dir PERMANENT die Kontrolle über deine Chars genommen mit dummen Mindcontroller units die schon von Anfang an dabei sind. Ich hab das Game nun 2x Rage Quittet.

Rage Quit 1: Mission Berge ein Fahzeug es stand am ANDEREN ende der Map und ich musste wieder KOMPLETT zurück damit während laufend gegener Gespawnt sind also > Enemy SPamming.
Rage Quit 2: Ich sollte ein Flugzeug saven WIEDER mit Endlosem Enemy SPawn, 2 Leute tot weil die Enemys 8x weiter moven Können als jeder deiner soldaten. dan wurde auch noch kurz vorm Schiff die 2 einfach von diesen Mindfraggern geabmushed und übernommen.

Pro: Keine Ahnung erlich....
Kon: Soldatenklassen sind schwachsinnig. Sniper die nicht wirklich snipen können. Heavy Soldiers die nur 3 felder maximum gehen können wen man noch die waffe abfeuern will. Debalanced Damage Scaling. Diese Pandorianer hauen 3x auf dich ein In einer Runde, und du kannst den Soldaten vergessen. Du verkrüppelst sie sie Aktivieren es einfach wieder. Sorry aber ich hab für das Game echt keine guten worte.... Wirst auch am Anfang direckt mit viel zu schweren missionen zugespammt. Stealth Mission? Am arsch ist ja alles so oder so Imidiatly Alerted das du da bist. Spart euch das Geld leute Game ist scheisse bleibt bei X-Com 1 oder 2.

Do not paly Phoenix point vanilla, it has problems and I never finished it.

Terror from the Void; is an expansion, which is a complete reworking of the whole game. It is a brilliant. It's easily as good as XCOM2. war of the chosen, which I have played several times. But with a lot more depth and better balance.

This game is straight up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ as a fan of very difficult games i find that this game is simply unfun, too complex, lacking directions.

I usually enjoy rather complex games like Xcom 2 so when i saw this game was somewhat simillar in the genre i decided to give it a shot and i was unfortunately dissapointed by this game.

Pheonix point has many issues here are the major ones i found or maybe im just garbage

1. the aiming system is a travesty to use with it being so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ innacurate a blindfolded toddler would be more accurate than these "trained soldiers"

2. the inventory system is simply an inconvenience with no real benefits to it other than making missions take longer unlike in xcom2 where you already have things set up and no damn mags garbage to deal with.

3. the infection seems clearly not possible to stop (probably a skill issue) or even delay

4. the faction system is good in theory but you needing to help them to unlock new researches seems nice but its simply tedious to do.

5. resupply missions are straight up bad with you needing to go back to ship with ♥♥♥♥ ton of stuff in everyone's inventory with new enemies spawning every turn after a certain point causing you to loose almost more than what you started with

6. the tutorial is broken

7. the base system is confusing and the need to supply armor and weapons everytime is just boring and long to do

The game is excellent. I'm a huge fan of the x-com franchise, but I think I like this game even better. There are a lot of aspects of this game that makes it more enjoyable. Some of the DLCs however, like "festering skies" and most of all the "corrupted horizons" were heavily disappointing for me.

I recommend to play it. DO NOT finish it!
Feel free to drop it when you get to "It's getting annoying..."

The aiming mechanic is awesome. Building on that, is the bodypart and evolution mechanic. It makes every other game of this type, feel unreasonable and a step back.
Class mixing is incredible and fun. You can do so many things using a team. When you get a hang of things, mutons and other things get added, with even more options.
The attention to detail is stellar. Each unit has weapon, armor, weapons, tools and an overall inventory. Each one of them has a position on the globe, in specific bases and ships. It's cool.
Terrain destruction and interaction is mindblowing! The possibilities!

Sounds awesome... But it doesn't scale.

Let's start with the globe (Geoscape).
At the start you are controlling 1 or 2 units so it's fun. And it works.
But mid to late game. You are jogging a couple teams doing: exploration, defence, resource retrieval, resource extraction, nest invasions, aerial combat, and story/mission progression.
Add to that at least one ship doing trading.
By that point one ingame day can take a couple real life days (play sessions). And every second of it feels terrible.
You fly around the globe every time you switch control of the unit. There's no grouping or control of order. They go by production order or manual click. The same with bases.
Trading, once you discover all the havens is critical for resources, but braindead once you have a route figured out.
It just adds to the head spinning.
You lose track what is where very easily. Every time you come back to the game you need to take a ton of time to reorient.

Team compositions are hard to implement and test, because of troop transportation. More than once i misclicked and sent a ship with 1-2 wounded or traded units towards a mission. Usually, with all the things happening, I notice it only after they arrive.
Now you have to remember. Between every action you take here, you go a cople times into combat (late game). So let's go there.

Every combat preparation needs to be examined and with a lot fo thought put in. With scarce resources all the teams can be sharing their equipment. So you do that with every unit, before EVERY deployment.
In combat it feels stiff. Bigger the team, the more of a drag controlling them becomes.
Like i said the mechanics of it are awesome but it overstays its welcome.
Every enemy evolves yes, but gets generic at some point. Probably not because the amount of types, and more of the exposure to them.
Additionally any excitement you have, to handle them in different ways is drained in geoscape.
This subject needs more analysis but i'm trying to keep it brief with every point.

Let's go to the story.
There are interesting concepts in there, writing wise. The gameplay not so much. After getting to the mid game you begin to NOT GIVE A F***!
Special missions are just a unique map. I believe only 2 in the whole game, have something different than the generic stuff (exalted mission and final one). You have no rest from generated, you fought me 40 times enemy.
Progression is a crawl and all impactful moments are hidden between gameplay annoyance.

The SPITE i finished this game with is unprecedented.
At one point i decided "F*** it! I'm doing only main story!". This decision just made me realise, how many balls i am juggling.
After 3 in game days. Havens started falling left and right. I lost 2 exotic extraction points. One of my bases got raided. Like 4 nests showed up(story progression research). I'm running out of resources. And i only finished 2-3 research projects.

You never get any automation or QOL with time. You only get more chores on your head. Miss any one, and you stumble and everything might go to hell.

I have ZERO shame in saying i cheated to finish it! And NOT because of the difficulty.
Even with those it was a drag.
End of the last mission looks interesting, but just the end. AFTER the biggest army i have EVER SEEN in this type of game.
It stinks of "The last one should be harder.". So let's just x3 the enemy!
(I might be bias, with the cheats. Tactically it might be interesting to handle... But again! F*** THIS!)

At the end.
I LOVE a lot about this game and it is impressive.
But the base, primal SPITE i feel for it... I have yet to feel for another game.

The aiming system NEEDS to be tried! The windows it opens are amazing.
It's something incredible buried under a thousand small problems.

Some of those ideas just BEG to be developed!

В игре всего 10 часов, все ещё впереди, но от общего удовольствия сбалансированности так и прёт "запахом разочарования" - "Почему это так быстро закончилось??? Где продолжение???". Купил полную версию (все допы и моды наверное :))) ). На данный момент категорически не жалею.

Edit: Per comments I'd seen online, the "Terror From the Void" mod does make the game better in my eyes, through some balancing changes and proper incorporation of the DLC mechanics into the main game. I won't change my review however. A mod shouldn't be needed to make the game enjoyable, and it still doesn't eliminate some of my core issues with the game's design.

I don't have the energy for a detailed review or anything. Game started really fun but quickly became such a slog. Maybe halfway through the game and I genuinely just don't have the motivation to keep playing. Only reason I'd even consider doing more is a compulsive desire to 100% my achievements

Every mission is the same, every research upgrade or perk feels barely useful or just downright boring, half the DLCs just add more boring junk to tangle with, enemies became either annoying to fight or just boring to fight, multiple classes just seem couterintuitive like making the signature move of the heavy being a jet pack yet it seldom does anything but let you scout an area because you can't use the heavy weapons after moving and even if you can, you either can't shoot through the ankle height cover next to him or the weapon misses because his aim is garbage. Idk, I just have no motivation to keep trying with this. There's nothing keeping me invested other than a cool aiming mechanic.

Only reason I even have as many hours in the game as I do at the time of writing is because I went to bed with the game running because I lost any interest in continuing for the moment. I guess if you like old-school Xcom it's apparently pretty authentic, at least from some people I've seen online, but I just can't get into it. Again, only reason I can imagine finishing this is if I'm desperate to get the rest of the achievements.

So far quite good. I like story setting and game design, graphics (mix of turn base and cRPG with story chooses) and optimisation are great.

Unfortunately game is not super deep and barely playable without mods. I was so bored with vanilla that during my 1st run had to install expansion mods to have at least some depth in squad development.

With mods ok 6.5-7/10

Прекрасная игра про тактику, но для меня, после трёх полных прохождений XCOM 2 со всеми DLC, тяжеловато адаптироваться к этой игре.
С одних механик на другие и тд.
Да в целом игра кайф, небольшой глоток свежего воздуха, после XCOM порой хочется чего-то нового.
В общем рекомендую данную игру, но адаптация не быстрая, к игре.

Not worth at all. If you like X-COM 2, King Arthur:Knight's Tale, Wasteland 3 - this game might be not for you!
I bought this game after completing x-com 2, with it's trash meme 99% hit misses, and heard that CEO is the same who had problems with old team and self-developed this game. SO... for some reason he decided to make all user interface DIFFERENT! with bad camera, bad movement, with stupid supplies and much more trolling mechanics. I have tried this game 3 times, and after 2 missions I just delete it. It's so downgraded! It's the same level as Disciples: Liberation.

Just play XCOM.

I try to enjoy Phoenix Point more than I end up doing. To start with, I don't dislike this game. It is however, flawed and not perfect.
Many players of Phoenix Point are XCOM players, either playing the reboot series, classics or both. Designed by the creator of the classic XCOM games, Phoenix Point seems to try and blend the gameplay of the classic titles with visuals and elements from the reboots. Many, like myself, play this game to try and scratch the same itch XCOM does, but for me it just doesn't really work all that well. I try to like this to the same degree as the XCOM reboots but I find it just falls short.
The character customisation isn't as good as the Reboots, and progression feels almost nonexistant. Most things or equipment you give your characters are sidegrades and not direct upgrades to that soldier. This feels, no matter how late in the game you are, like your soldiers are still at a similar level to that of the start of the campaign, the only difference being they have accumilated more skills from levels as they get sent on missions (or camp in a Phoenix base with training centres for the soldiers that don't see deployment often)
The lack of better customisation doesnt make my squad feel as personalised and stand out as much as they do in XCOM, combined with trying to be like the classic games in which soldiers can die easier and dont have too much going for them in terms of individuality takes away from the personalisation of customising a squad in XCOM. It takes away from getting attached to your soldiers, making missions feel low stakes as I feel like losing a soldier is a mild annoyance at most : new soldiers dont feel all that hard to come by and replacing them is easy, especially if you build enough of a fighting force across a few Phoenix bases towards the Mid/Endgame.

The enemies have a cool evolution system going for them, but i feel they could have done more with it.
The original concepts for enemies in this game seem so cool and terrifying, and i feel as though it would have gave the game more of its own identity and uniqueness. They look visually more horrific and combined with a more horror oriented vibe really make the Pandora virus feel more eldritch in nature. It is scary, It is more unique and it really makes the mutants feel like mutants. in the final version of the game, i find them to feel more like aliens than severely mutated people that have been mutilated beyond recognition by an eldritch virus.
The enemy design is boring compared to the concepts.
Along with this, in combat there is an odd lack of music, combined with the stiffness of some animations just makes the game feel boring and bland. combat seems oddly calm. Just some simple chaotic background music, or just something that isnt silence to fill the background void would go a long way in making the action feel like action. In trying to build atmosphere by taking away a rather important part of action, they instead remove the atmosphere. Everything the Pandorans and your soldiers do feels anticlimactic. compared to XCOM, the combat isnt the greatest.

Without ranting too much, everything this game does or tries to do, XCOM just simply does it way better. you're better off spending the money on XCOM : Enemy Within or 2 + WOTC than this game and its overpriced DLCs which add barebones content that often gets ignored or doesn't add all that much.

This is a mediocre game that fails to successfully emulate the classic and modern XCOM titles well
Its okay for scratching that XCOM itch, especially if you've played the classics and/or reboot series and want to expand into more games like XCOM but for me, this game just makes me want to go back and play more XCOM. Nothing really beats it IMO, so I can't really recommend this game.

Ho trovato molto appagante l’esplorazione del mondo e lo svolgimento delle varie missioni; nel complessivo i vari finali diversi sono piuttosto gradevoli anche se abbastanza scontati e alcuni pezzi degli stessi riciclati dagli altri. Ho riscontrato il grosso problema del blocco repentino del contatore degli obiettivi di gioco con a volte il problema di bloccarmi perché non riuscivo a capire cosa mi mancava per completarli. Ho finito il gioco 2 volte a Leggendario ma non mi ha sbloccato l'obiettivo della difficoltà Eroica, il che risulta molto frustrante. Oltre a questo si sono probabilmente buggati 2 obiettivi, risultando il gioco impossibile da finire al 100%.
Consigliato per gli amanti del genere per il gusto di giocarlo ma non per i completisti.

Phoenix Point has great mechanics but loses points due to a lack of quality of life Features.

-The true aim system is great (each shot is calculated individually), and a welcome change to the standard hit-chance
-Locking Tech behind factions is a good way of giving depth to the research tree, and make it more fun to play around with in general
-The different types of aliens evolving with you, and developing new abilities is definitely more engaging than the classic "generic Trooper number 15 with more health then number 14"

That being said, the game straight up wastes your time, even with the fastest animation setting you can only move 1 soldier at a time. On the enemy's turn, you can spend minutes watching aliens out of LOS moving around doing nothing.
The story is ok but nothing special (Spoiler for endgame stuff) [spoiler] They should have included the factions more in the endgame, instead of them just destroying a few bases [/spoiler]

All in all a solid 7/10, which easily could be a 9/10 with a bit more QoL and balancing.

I have played Xcom 2:war of the chosen and this is the best xcom game and one of the best turn based strategy games.

Some things I like about Phoenix point is the maps are smaller and not every point on the world map needs a battle.

Ставлю "класс" только чтобы поддержать разработчика. Но ИксКом 2 выполнен гораздо более целостно и, как говорят нынче гейм-дизайнеры, "консистентно".
В игре перебор с механиками и мелочами, а отдельным пунктом бесят исчерпаемые боеприпасы. Особенно в начале игры, когда попадаешь в миссию с эвакуацией скарабея, а нужные коды доступа никак не подсвечены на карте. В итоге враги бесконечно прибывают, а отстреливать их нечем, потому что ты обшарил каждый угол на карте, а кодов доступа не нашел.

Good candidate for a mixed review, but overall I would almost rather play any other tactical shooter than this. Mostly, the game suffers from a large list of small things that add up to a bad experience; this includes: very repetitive missions, poor writing, bad spawns, uninspired character perks, overly cumbersome flow of recruiting characters, and a research tree that feels like mostly filler. Oh, and the game seriously lacks thematic music. If you can call anything in this game at all resembling "music" (there's a slider for it at least), it is entirely atmospheric. Overall, this feels like death from a thousand cuts.

But there's one huge flaw in the game that ruined the game for me. Their ballistic system, that in concept seems like it would push the genre forward, ruined the game entirely for me. When moving to positions to fire, the game will give sight lines towards enemies. Repeatedly, you will move then aim for a shot and there will be nothing viable to shoot at, effectively wasting your character's turn. Also, certain heavy weapons can't shoot over half cover, or even just elevation in general. This becomes a strange combination to have on your jump jet class that wants to be on roofs, doesn't it?

On top of that, their "step out of full cover for a free action" system has never once worked once for me, and only worked for the enemy, despite the tutorial saying that it should. The idea of targeting limbs is cool and all (though disabling anything other than arms doesn't seem to do anything. Shoot a head for bonus damage? Nope. Shoot a leg for minus move speed? It says it would, but it doesn't), but it came at the cost of the entire game feeling unreliable with the cover system. In the end I gave up and started just having all my soldiers shoot from the open then move to cover, which slowed the pacing of the game down to a crawl.

Give me X-Com percent based hits any day over this mess of an inconsistent game. I did go through the mod list to see if anyone, somehow, had a ballistics fix, before giving up on the game, but no luck. It's a shame. The game could be fun with several hundred little things (and one big one) fixed. But they've had 6 years of "fixes" and it's still not really worth playing. It's just too frustrating, for me.

Finished my second playthrough and still loving this game.
The setting isn't completely unique, there are lots of moments where I was reminded of XCOM. But the way the story is told? The world is brought to life? It feels immerse and real. And it is different enough to distinguish itself completely from XCOM.

The only negative points I have is that, for me, personally, it feels like if some classes are only viable as a second option. Like Infiltrator. The ammo capacity of infiltrator weapons is a joke. And there are no mission types that require complete stealth. Granted, maybe research steal missions could be done in stealth, but I never accomplished that. An Infiltrator who is proficient with assault rifles from the start? That's a whole different story! But all in all only the classes available right from the start (Assault, Sniper, Heavy) feel really viable, while all other (Berserker, Infiltrator, Priest, Technician) feel underwhelming. Yes, you NEED Priests towards the end. To protect your soldiers, to debuff enemies, etc. But apart from that? I'd rather have a Heavy & Sniper soldier with lots of ammo and armor who is able to jump across the map and change positions constantly, than a Berserker with Infiltrator. Yes, the Berseker can attack enemies in melee at first while in stealth. But will he survive the first attack? That depends entirely on luck and the positioning of enemies.

Another big part is equipment. Armor and weapons. I REALLY like the research steal and that you have to ally with factions to get their research (or reverse engineer it through found stuff). But why are there so little variants of armor? You have the Phoenix armor/weapons, the Bandit variants and than like one from each faction + a weapon with poison/virus/etc. based on faction speciality and in the end the special stuff. But also just one weapon more. And no assault rifle.
Why can't I progessively develop better armor for all classes? This is what I really enjoyed about XCOM, that variance in armor and weapons. Allowing you to fine-tune your builds. Yes, there are mutations and cybernetics. (Pretty cool fresh idea by the way!) But as resources are scarce you can't do that with every soldier.

Still, I love this game and hope that some kind of spiritual successor is released in some years.

After 139 hours playing a SINGLE playthrough of this game, I must give it a NO. It is one of the most unbalanced games I have ever played. It had its moments where I had fun, but those were vastly outweighed by the hours where I was constantly frustrated by the mechanics of the game, by the pacing of the game, by the lack of clear direction in the game, by the lack of knowing how to get research projects, by the Gate Keeping of most research behind the 3 factions (i.e. you have to befriend the obstinate factions to research a great deal of things to research or steal ONE research topic from a Haven each mission), by the lack of direction in HOW to acquire the Ancient weapons and then build them (what's up with no Ancient Assault weapon varieties and no Ancient Armor, whatever), by the lack of ability to manufacture many of the important resources in the game (i.e. tech and materials), by the purposeful design to make the game HARD even on Veteran difficulty!

And why was the game HARD? Because the developers were not happy with how "easy" it was to beat the game when first released 6 years ago. That's what some reviews have pointed out. So, in subsequent DLC releases they "balanced" it. What they did was make the game noticeably LONGER to play through one Playthrough, more tedious, and as a result very uninspiring overall.

This game has been compared to XCom multiple times because of the obvious similarities. I won't go into those comparisons as they were covered years ago by others. But, as one who played ALL of the original XCOM games of the 90's and LOVED them and who played BOTH iterations of the new XCOM games and LOVED those, it is a shame that these developers couldn't capture that magic! I did not love this game and barely liked any of it in spite of the 139 hours invested in it.

I really have no desire to play a 2nd playthrough. I'm not one who is into masochism, although I feel like I had nearly 139 hours of a masochist session!!

An excellent, combat-focused, turn based strategy with impressive scope. Ignore the negativity around early bugs and kickstarter - it's a great game. Fans of the newer XCom games, who are open to more depth and choice will likely find much to enjoy here.

PROS:
+ Excellent, incredibly feature-rich, turn-based combat.
+ 7 character classes, which can be multi-classed in interesting ways
+ While not super heavy in terms of plot or characterisation, the world building, factions, and enemies all combine to create an excellent, lovecraftian atmosphere.
+ More choice and depth than Xcom. Forget about choosing between 3 missions - you have way more strategic scope here. Choose which bases to reactivate and how to spend resources developing your ground forces, research, production, air force and more.
+ Nice production quality in terms of 3D world, 2D cut-scene illustrations, and music.
+ The complete package with all DLC adds extra variety and gameplay mechanics.

CONS:
- Too long: A playthrough will likely take 60-100 hours. That said, when I installed PP, it got the majority of my attention until completion.
- Lacks variety: Most of that time will be spent in combat and prepping your squads.
- Resources are really tight, unless you like raiding other factions who you share an enemy with, or manually trading, which is very tedious and micro-intensive. This can be solved with the mod which allows your labs and fabrication plants to produce a daily amount of tech and materials.

Really good, scratches my XCOM itch. I like the combat mechanics although I'd love the ability to kneel and go prone. Geoscape is good, the only complaint is research which seems a bit meaningless as everything is quick to research after you have a few bases. Plus the stuff you can develop is a bit meh, no superguns. :)

After playing this and Xcom back to back, I prefer Phoenix Point. Its less about pod pulls and rushing weapons and armor research, and more about strategy. The action point system is better than a move and shoot system. The willpower mechanic is great. And the lovecraftian story is fun.

Tactical combat depth
Turn-based battles reward positioning, cover use, and careful ability management. Stealth, obstacle destruction, and threading shots through tight spaces are fun tactical options. Enemy mutations and resistances force strategy adaptation, and the varied enemy design keeps encounters engaging.

Meaningful class and loadout choices
Infiltrators, snipers, assaults, berserkers, heavies, technicians, and priests can all be customized with weapons, armor, abilities, and augmentations.

Strategic layer and resource management
Managing multiple bases, havens, research, and production adds long-term planning. Havens can provide soldiers, supplies, and research benefits. Research choices and facility expansion have real consequences for future missions.

The Mist
The Mist encroaches on bases and territories, forcing more invasions and adding constant pressure. It makes defense and expansion decisions more meaningful.

Enemy Design
The artistic design of the enemies and how they move is very well done.

Quality of Life Improvement Suggestions (Interface and Information)

A unified strategic economics and operations page (MOST IMPORTANT)
Piecing together income, expenses, mutagen generation, research progress, and production modifiers across menus is tedious. A unified economics page should show itemized resource income, expenses, stockpiles, and modifiers, with links to bases, facilities, and production queues. This lets players spot bottlenecks, track production, and make decisions quickly while keeping bases useful.
Players want to see not just what is built, but also where resources from base facilities and other sources come from.

Loadout presets (MOST IMPORTANT)
Manually re-equipping armor, weapons, and items each mission makes experimentation more tedious. Presets for sniper, infiltrator, assault, berserker, heavy, technician, or priest builds would save time and make trying new strategies easier.

An unequip all button and other unequip options (MOST IMPORTANT)
Currently removing all gear from a soldier requires ten to fifteen clicks. Quick buttons like unequip all, unequip backpack, or unequip armor would streamline managing large squads.

Improved sorting and filtering in the inventory (MOST IMPORTANT)
Weapons, armor, and items are long lists. Both personnel and manufacturing pages allow sorting by class, but not by damage type, tactical role, armor rating, accuracy, perception, etc. Sorting columns and filter dropdowns would make late-game gear management faster and less tedious.

Multi soldier inventory management (MOST IMPORTANT)
Right now, you must check each soldier individually. A pre-mission squad screen showing everyone’s inventory in one view, like XCOM 2, would make comparing loadouts easier.

Waypoint chains for aircraft routing
Currently, you can only set a plane route one destination at a time, and only after arriving and finishing a task at that location. Being able to queue multiple waypoints before departure would let players plan more efficient travel between sites and reduce constant manual intervention.

Actions log for damage and effect notifications
During battles, damage, healing, status effects, and abilities flash briefly and disappear. An actions log would let players review what happened in a turn without replaying it.

Research clarity
Research requirements are often only revealed once a previous research is finished, and prerequisites can be hidden behind RNG from factions. A single interface showing all tech, prerequisites, and faction requirements or a research tree would make planning paths much easier.

Manufacturing queue automation
Queues stop when resources run out. Rules like resume when materials reach 50 percent or pause if food drops below 100 would prevent production from silently stalling.

Fast loot options for scavenging missions
Clicking every crate after a fight is tedious. A fast loot option would save time while keeping combat meaningful.

Finally: new maps, new enemies, new weapons, new augmentations, and new abilities are always welcome changes!

Conclusion

Phoenix Point needs to show what it already has more clearly and give players better control and better access to the game mechanics. It has a good tactical and strategic ideas and foundations, but just needs to help players access them easier.

The mastermind and the creator of beloved Xcom series, Julian Gollop has heard fan voices from the globe and created a new franchise (hopefully), which could have been a better and restarted Xcom.

However, I would not rate the game and give it thumbs up or down. I tried to like it, but I get distracted from it easily by other similar titles (which is a bad sign). On the other hand, it delivers mechanics which are revolutionary and long awaited in the genre. Aiming system, overwatch cones, vehicles, different debuffs after being hit - perfect examples of what was made right.

Story plot, fractions and politics, locations, atmosphere felt underwhelming. Some people criticise Xcom2 for being too Holliwoodish, however Phoenix Point is on the other side of spectrum and not hooking, not delivering, not epic - at least, at the start. But that's exactly where it should be attracting the gamer!

100% the game has the fanbase and is good, it's just that I wasn't that involved. The ideas behind were great and fresh and much anticipated. I know guys didn't have that much of the resources to make it ideal. Hopefully, now with all the purchases they will have the finance to pursue more polished part II. Good luck!
