Note : 4,5/5
O inicio do capitulo 4 me pegou
An FMV classic from Sierra. When I was a kid I wanted to play this so badly, but wasn't able to since I didn't have a PC that could run it at the time. Years later I finally remembered to play it and bought it on GoG. For whatever reason my copy stopped working there, so I came to Steam to repurchase it. I haven't had any issues with the Steam version.
The game follows Adrienne Delaney as she and her husband Don buy an old mansion that is supposedly haunted. Over the course of several chapters the story unfolds and you learn about the events that take place here.
The gameplay is simple enough with the typical point and click interface of most Sierra games post-EGA parcer days. You do have an inventory and can examine each item. Most items don't need looked at closely, but there is one in particular you will need to look at to advance the story.
Like many other Sierra games, there is a point where you can actually lock yourself out from progressing the story and having to start over. There is only one instance with this, but be warned. Unfortunately you can only have one save per game plus the bookmark, so it's hard to tell where you will run into trouble if you haven't played before. The saving grace to this is you can do a chapter select at any point and begin play from that chapter all over. I am not sure if that was an option when the game first released or if that was added many years later, but it's a nice to have if you accidentally lock yourself out of winning at that one point.
The characters are likeable and the story lore is interesting. Aside from the limited technology we had back in the day, I think this game holds up very well to this day. It's probably my favorite FMV game of all time, and it is well worth a playthrough if you're a Sierra and/or horror fan. I have been playing it once a year around Halloween for quite a few years now. Give it a try.
Like other old point and clicks, some of the puzzles are a little obtuse. Cheesy acting and special effects. It is like a good bad movie. I wish the videos were in high resolution like the store page shows. Overall this is a classic point an d click game.
For a 1995 FMV game that I recently played and finished, I highly recommend it! Some of the graphics can get a bit wonky but, again, it's from 1995. It's still such a great game. Please give it a try if you've been considering it. I don't think you'll regret it. A word of advice though: look everywhere and at everything! You won't regret it either lol.
The funniest horror game in the world. Great atmosphere, soundtrack, memorable characters and good story (which was a bit rushed at the end, lots of exposition and all that), but overall it was great experience which wasn't drawn out at all. There is no "definitive" way to finish the game - you can take multiple paths at the end to finish it.
I highly recommend you trying it if you want to take in the vibes of what the 90's were all about
I do not normally leave a lot of reviews but this game was an absolute garbage. It was extremely boring and made absolutely no sense. The husband was terrible and only good parts were her being gorgeous and that you could pet the dog. I requested a refund after 20 mins of torture. What did I expect from an Activision game anyways... Update: Could not get a refund because of the 14 day policy.. Now I have this stupid game forever.
Game is a classic. This has everything to satisfy cheesy horror fans. Gore, entertaining and spooky story, excellent atmospherics, good characterisation and corny acting. This was ground breaking, back in 1995 and honestly still holds up well for what it sets out to achieve to this day.
Highly recommend playing this game with the lights out for maximum spookiness.
A brilliant FMV / point and click horror experience that is a must for any retro gaming fan.
Plus the closing credits song is perfection.
An awful game. Terrible story, terrible mechanics.
Mitch McConnell hated this game, so you know it's good.
I was craving an old school point and click. This did NOT disappoint. I loved it! Total slow burn horror. The ending was crazy!
Just play it already! What a classic!
My favourite point and click horror game of all time. A timeless classic. A real unicorn!
The rape scenes (yes, there's multiple different scenes) are too realistic, maybe even for today standard.
Soundtracks are amazing and Characters are well-built. When you already feels connected to them and then comes the rape scene, it's absolutely terrifying.
Build up is incredibly slow with there is almost no pay off, boringly predictable plot, and insufferable cast. It feels more like a tech demo than an actual game. Having come to check this out after playing Harvester first, it was definitely a let down.
the audio is so crunchy its hard to make out sometimes but the vibes are off the charts
Phantasmagoria is one of those rare games whose legacy rests as much on its ambition as on the experience it delivers. Released during the height of the 1990s full-motion video craze, it set out to merge cinematic storytelling with classic point-and-click adventuring at a scale almost unheard of at the time. Seven CD-ROMs, a full cast of live actors, elaborate sets, and a script hundreds of pages long signaled that Sierra wasn’t merely experimenting — it was trying to push the adventure genre into uncharted territory. Even today, the sheer scope of its production is striking; it feels less like a conventional game and more like a gothic horror film you inhabit frame by frame.
The story follows Adrienne Delaney, a novelist seeking inspiration in a remote, sprawling mansion with her husband Don. At first, the setting feels mysterious but harmless — an old estate filled with dusty antiques and hints of a tragic history. But as Adrienne explores further, discomfort turns into dread. Strange visions plague her, rooms reveal secrets best left buried, and Don’s personality twists into something violent and foreign. The mansion itself becomes the true antagonist: a labyrinth steeped in occult rituals, past atrocities, and a malevolent presence that slowly tightens its grip. The narrative unfolds gradually, allowing the tension to simmer until it erupts in a series of increasingly disturbing revelations and confrontations.
Mechanically, Phantasmagoria is one of Sierra’s most accessible adventures. It forgoes the notoriously punishing puzzle design the company was known for and instead focuses on a streamlined, intuitive interface. Movement is simple, object interactions are clear, and progression rarely stalls due to illogical problem-solving. This simplicity is deliberate, as the game’s real focus is on atmosphere and storytelling rather than cerebral challenge. The exploration of the mansion becomes its own kind of puzzle — each room hides fragments of the house’s morbid past, and uncovering them slowly pieces together a narrative of obsession, possession, and tragedy. The game’s pacing encourages thoroughness, rewarding players with hidden scenes, subtle foreshadowing, and unsettling environmental details that contribute to an ever-building sense of unease.
The FMV presentation is both a defining strength and a glaring weakness. On one hand, it gives the game a tactile, eerie authenticity. Seeing real actors move through digital sets lends the environment a dreamlike quality; their performances, while melodramatic by today’s standards, amplify the game’s theatrical tone. The backgrounds — from shadowed hallways to the magician’s hidden chambers — remain visually striking, and the soundtrack, filled with haunting chants and whispered motifs, elevates the tension significantly. On the other hand, the same FMV limitations that impressed players in 1995 now highlight the awkwardness of early multimedia integration. Edges between live actors and static backgrounds are noticeable, transitions can be stiff, and certain performances feel more like stage drama than grounded emotion. Yet for many players, this dated charm is part of the experience rather than a flaw.
Phantasmagoria also became known for its willingness to push boundaries. The game’s graphic violence and disturbing themes — particularly a controversial scene involving sexual assault — generated intense reactions at launch. Retailers refused to stock it, parental groups protested, and the game became a lightning rod for debates about censorship and the limits of horror in interactive media. Even today, these scenes carry emotional weight and remain difficult to watch. They serve as reminders of the designers’ intent to explore horror not just through supernatural elements, but through human cruelty and psychological breakdown, though some players feel the execution crosses lines for shock value rather than narrative necessity.
Despite its rough edges, Phantasmagoria remains a compelling artifact of gaming history. It represents a moment when developers dared to think big, to treat games as cinematic experiences that could rival film in scale and emotional impact. Its storytelling, while melodramatic, is sincere in its attempt to craft a slow-burn horror mystery. Its atmosphere, built on unsettling sound design and a mansion filled with secrets, continues to linger long after the credits roll. For modern players willing to embrace its dated presentation, it offers a journey into a uniquely crafted world where the boundaries between game and movie blur into something oddly hypnotic.
Looking back, Phantasmagoria is not a perfect game, but it is undeniably a memorable one. It captures both the aspirations and limitations of its era, standing as a testament to bold creative risks and the power of atmosphere over complexity. Those who approach it with patience and an appreciation for vintage horror will find an experience that is unsettling, ambitious, sometimes flawed, but ultimately unforgettable — a descent into madness wrapped in early-multimedia spectacle.
Rating: 8/10
This game was as good as when I played it like 25 years ago. Amazing story, acting and environment. If you like "Point & click" games, this is one of the classics you need to have on your wishlist.
this game not only has mature themes but they're actually portrayed with dignity? that's how you know a woman made this game
Might be the funniest horror game I've ever played! The acting is pure goofy gold, the puzzles are simple but satisfying, and the horror moments are surprisingly effective even today! Made a video about it here: https://youtu.be/8wEFzYMiHtU?si=XJqQwTy0AXLAnFOH
An enthralling relic of the past and a solid, slow burn of suspense, horror and '90s FMV perfection. If you're nostalgic for this sort of thing, you will likely enjoy Phantasmagoria. As I am still playing it, and taking my time exploring and moseying around as one does with this sort of game, I can't speak on the later game stuff, but if there is anything game breaking, I'll update this review. For now, I am going to get back to enjoying this charming, spooky game.
Update: Apparently, the save function is not working properly.
One of the best
Was a fun 4 hours.
Do not waste your time; it's an object of the 90’, flaws included.
Victoria Morsell isn’t worth it, and it's not as gory or controversial as you would think; it's really just a very mid PG12 game.
An enjoyably dark and gory (for a 90s FMV game) little experience. If that type of game is your cup of tea, you'll enjoy this.
The game is amazing. It's Phantasmagoria, and there's nothing like it. The problem is that there is a huge game breaking bug in the last chapter. It deletes your save game, and freezes with black screen. You can finish it probably if you never die though. I couldn't complete the game, because I don't want to play it all over again. For this reason, I do NOT recommend this version of the game.

I remember seeing my older sister playing this game... I was around 3 or 4 years old... I had nightmares for years. Good game!
I don't know what I am doing, but this game is awesome. Funny, spoopy, funny, cool graphics (art style made it age like a fine wine, did i say funny?
A classy old game that's got a lot of charm because of the real actors. It felt slow for a while but man the last few chapters were great. It definitely picks up.

OP gierka, polecam każdemu bo jest to coś innego. Mega klimacik i oby więcej takich gierek.

An absolute classic. As a huge lover of FMV games, Phantasmagoria is peak. The gore is *chefs kiss* and the cheesiness is endearing. One of my favourite games!
Violent, dorky, and lots of yelling about drain cleaner.
All in all very much a classic. Despite a particularly controversial scene Phantasmagoria was Sierra's best seller.
I made a video all about the game here!:
https://youtu.be/R9352V8GSzM?si=gx3SIxnKZlTak_zX
I got this when it was first ever released on CD. I still have the entire set too I think 8 discs and you had to swap between them while playing since some videos where on different discs. So this was a christmas gift for me, but both me and my sister were so excited to play it that we snuck the first disc to start it and only got so far before we needed disc 2. This was the best interaction horror game on the market at the time.... SO CREEPY
on Facebook there was a group that started that wanted to make this into a movie, yet I dont know what happened to that production. It would be a really good movie and if they partnered with Netflix that could then make it an interactive version!
super cool atmosphere and style to it.
While the gameplay is definitely clunky and the acting cheesy, the vibes and style of this game are quite charming.
Quite fun if you can stomach the 90s style.
There must be something about us 90s kids who just love the cheesiness of this game.
I adore this game! It is so fun and nostalgic, and the story is actually pretty unique despite the now-overused 'young couple buys haunted mansion' trope. The puzzles are fairly intuitive so there isn't as much frustration as some of the other adventure games of the time. It is very easy to miss (lots of) scenes because the game doesn't force you to see them all to progress, so for me it has plenty of replayability, even beyond the fact it is basically an interactive movie. There are some silly easter eggs too!
I do wish the first chapter was longer so the one character's descent into madness would be more impactful.
I really like the puzzle aspect of all of Roberta Williams games, however I am used to her KQ games so this was a surprise when I started playing it. The dark aspect it brings to the classic search and discover model is a refreshing change. The game can be a little frustrating at times which is expected from a Roberta game but once you know what to do it becomes quite enjoyable. May require a little patience on the players part but it is a very good game.
Ahh, the start of all my love for Horror Games. I've played through this game so many times when I was younger. Had to find all the ways the wives died, lol. Great point and click.
GAME GOAT, Perfect Plot, Perfect Ending. Dont Forget read Coroner report after finishing the game.
The only downside, game is not censored please be wise, i guess
I come to this very late.
But it still holds quite well.
awesome game from the 1990s , still frighten me so ,great plot
Fantástico point and click dos anos 90!!!!
Chapter seven isn't all that good in terms of game design, but I still love the story and gameplay that leads to the frustrating conclusion. This is the first FMV game I've played, and I plan to keep exploring this fascinating'subgenre' of adventure games.
Classic game, one of my favorites!
The game glitched on the final chapter and then wiped my save >:(
Played this with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed the overwhelming cheesyness and lowbudget writing. My parents played it when they were dating back in the 90's and now I did the same thing, felt good. If you like FMVs or mistery games you'll probably enjoy it, but make sure to be patient, the UI is dated and clunky, can get on your nerves sometimes.
👍🏼
Clásico de Clásicos
It looks like a decent FMV cheesy horror game, but this POS crashes constantly. I really can't be bothered to look into how to fix the issues just because I wasn't terribly interested in this game and bought on a whim. I originally bought it to see the gore , but I ended up just watching a YouTube supercut. If you are buying this game for the same reason as me, I suggest you just watch a video. Cool concepts based on the little that I saw, but the game just doesn't function. Worthless crap.
You will need to mess with DOS Box configuration by finding the config file down in where Steam barfs this game into, because it comes with some bigbrain fullscreen settings by default that will probably make your machine spaz out and rearrange your open programs all over the place across 3 monitors.
It's better to just do windowed with like 3x scale at this point.
Other than that, it's literally as it was in 1995, and it's still great to this day. It's proof Sierra made timeless classics. there is nothing to this game. You click stuff. You click stuff to look at stuff so you can maybe click the stuff and find more stuff to click. It is a mix of "Hidden item" style gaming, and point and click puzzle solving.
It's still just as exciting now when you find a thing you think you can use somewhere else, and go clicking back over to it to progress further. Worth the play.
I made this mistake of buying this without reading it, thinking it was some remastered something or other like the 7th Guest. I could've just popped my CDs in and played the game the same way, so that's on me. Be warned. Your 6$ are at stake.
THE GRAPHICS LOOK SO REAL.
By the way, if you're not into gore, might want to turn the parental control thing on, because some of the scenes are pretty vivid and exciting.
*Played via SCUMMVM
While I completely understand the appeal to this game and why someone would like it, this game is just not for me. Right off the bat, the playstyle is not my thing. It is a very click and watch kind of game without any real puzzle-based mechanics or deep problem solving. Even though this playstyle is not my thing, a game that I enjoy still could’ve been made (see my review for the sequel). However, while the game certainly has positive qualities, the overall package completely falls flat for me.
Pros: Entertaining acting, a decent story, and good atmosphere.
Cons: Bad story pacing, lack of a single puzzle outside of basic item interaction, useless animations that waste your time, and timer based decisions that confused me and left me to watch forced cutscenes multiple times when failed.
The game is good and has some old school 96' atmosphere to it, but chapter 7 is glitching/crashing the game and it deletes your save game making it a real nightmare to beat the game. I need to find a video of what to do as I'm seemingly stuck in endless loop of crashes and end game screens.
I used the excellent community discussion post outlining how to play this with ScummVM instead of Dosbox which fixed a couple of the out-of-the-box issues I experienced straight off the bat. If you have troubles with objects rotating too quickly in inspect mode, for example, do check out that post and give ScummVM a go. Ok, now onto the actual review...
It's definitely a product of its time - which is not necessarily a bad thing per se, just something to keep in mind. This is not a game for the kiddos (especially on uncensored mode), and some trigger warnings would definitely include SA, partner violence, one particular (but brief) forced eating scene and quite a bit of gore. As a result, it's not something everyone would necessarily want to play, even if you take away the sometimes frustrating ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in navigation, pace and puzzle design.
If you've got a soft spot for cheesy FMV games, and can accept it for what it is (a definite product of its time, both in gameplay and the depictions of its characters), it is a pretty fun game that doesn't get too hard... save for chapter 7, if you didn't grab everything you need before the final big event triggers. Thankfully you can start a new game and skip straight to chapter 7 if you need to scoot back a bit (as you cannot return to the beginning of the chapter in your save once the event triggers).
The music is great and moody, there were several excellent jumpscares; and although the protagonist takes her time and lingers too long on things, it does give you the option to skip sequences you've already experienced. Let's face it, you don't want to take 30 seconds to walk through a door and go down some stairs sometimes, especially when the game pretty much pushes you to investigate locations over and over, rather than them being one-and-done. It also has a reasonable in-game hint system (that doesn't reveal too much, while nudging you in the right direction) if you get stuck, which is great!
Look... don't pay full price for this - wait for it to go on sale at least. But as stated, if you enjoy FMV, nostalgic games that are a little janky, and a decent dose of tropish horror, this could be for you. Just do keep in mind that the partner violence in this is extensive (it underpins the entire story) - so if that is a sensitive subject for you, definitely give this one a miss.
Godt gammelt Sierra spil.
Roberta Williams of King's Quest fame produced a gothic horror inspired adventure that captivated my imagination. A married couple searches to find the chilling secret hidden beneath a newly acquired haunted mansion that has a sordid history. The dialogue's pacing can drag on a bit. Moving from plot point to plot point can take some time. But Phantasmagoria's premise is solid, and produces a story that holds the players attention. Rated 7 out of 10.
Good old game. Mid acting but fun. 6/10
Hawktasmatuah
Still very playable, great gore. The end was totally worth it.
PQ É BOM
peccato che non è in Italiano
too quick, too easy. lots of cinematics. novelty for its time but dated big time
just like i remember it. gods i love old sierra games. they were some of the best back then.
im in this
These graphics are really something else, if you have the PC to run it.
Phantasmagoria is an ancient game from 1995. It's a whopping 29 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware.
This game is so old it runs in DOSBOX and doesn't take advantage of hardware acceleration. It has a dated control scheme, dated graphics, and runs poorly due to the DOSBOX emulation. While DOSBOX is a fine tool for those seeking retro gaming, it's not really appropriate for ancient abandonware like this to be dumped on Steam without any modernisation, this is just a greedy cash grab from developers trying to get your money for dead software, they want to pay them a second time for a game you probably already owned.
But let's talk specifically about the game because gaming history is a hobby of mine (despite having a low opinion of old dead games that really could use a remaster). In some ways Phantasmagoria was a bit of a last gasp for Sierra, which at the time was reforming to try stay relevant as the PC game industry they had helped to pioneer was seeping past Ken and Roberta Williams. Indeed, Roberta would work on this then move on to assist with a sequel before leaving Sierra to work on educational software, and eventually retire. Hats off for the great service the Williams did for the industry, at any rate.
Phantasmagoria was very much on brand for Sierra, not just providing a deep rich story and traditional point and click adventuring, but also pushing the boundaries of the industry, with M rated content, and one of the first games to feature full motion video as part of the game... thanks in no small part to the emerging capabilities of the CD-ROM in gaming. And, the game did well in 1995.
It's no longer 1995. The game is severely dated, the FMV couldn't possibly fit in any more mpeg jaggies, resolution is locked, all those old DOSBOX problems. If this was 1995, I'd say, sure, go down the store and buy a box, but today, it's a nostalgia cash grab from Activision, who really should know better. Trying to get paid for old, dead, abandoned software. Shame, Activision, shame.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Phantasmagoria is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $10 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again.
For comparison, the $10 asking price for this game could get you games like "Metro Exodus", "Alien: Isolation" or "Pillars of Eternity II". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Played this game in the 90's and again now , Just as great as i remember.
Nightdive is suck
Amazing adventure! The use of digitized actors for the gameplay and the FMV sequences is iconic for the era the game was made. I loved the characters and their interpretations, specially the protagonist and his husband. The puzzles where mostly easy and I could get to the last chapter without any mayor problems. The last chapter gave me some troubles, but I eventually managed to understand its logic and finished the game, which was extremely satisfying. I would recommend it to any fan of FMV adventures and 90s horror.
A deep dive into the unknown
Considering it's age it's held up pretty well.
The storyline is linear. Object hunting & usage are straightforward. There was only 1 items usage that took me having to look it up and once you read it you'll smack yourself in the head.
The FMV cutscenes, back in the day these were fantastic. Today they're a garbled pixellated mess. No hate as there's only so much that can be done to enable the game to run on current systems.
This is one game out of a handful that I'd love to see get a remake.
Nutten!
This classic can come off as quite cheesy, compared to modern games, however I find that the cheesiness is all apart of the appeal. Not only was this a groundbreaking game for its time, but this game definitely has enough crazy story-line to keep the player invested (and horrified). Would also recommend the censored version for those more sensitive to gore. I normally am not phased by that kind of thing, however, they did not hold back on the practical effects and even I was surprised by some of the graphics lol
Its a pretty cool game for its time. It does work quite well apart from some mouse issues due to DosBox that need you to save and quit and relaunch to resolve.
Its not particularly hard to solve, and not even particularly scary - everything is fairly obvious, except in chapter 7,
Even though you can save your game all the way through, there really is nothing dangerous - however, once you go into the "dark room" in chapter 7, that's it. No restoring, no saving, just many gory deaths with the option of trying again - and no way to fast forward though the cut scenes. So you better hope you have everything you need!
Definitely not suitable for kids. There are many explicit and gory scenes.
Im scared i go to bed
even though this is an old game, it is still fun and challenging. It is a long game with an exciting ending but does contain some violence and horror. I first played this game back in the 90s and was happy to find it was still available from Steam.
Very good horror adventure game, It was ahead of its time, with the whole actor video captures. I remember this game was 12 cd !
Great game, I had lots of fun!
However, be sure to save often because the mouse cursor can get stuck sometimes and you have to exit and reset the game if that happens to fix it.
As a puzzle strategy lover, I'm fond of this game as it was one of the first PC games I played. I was way too young for the content, but it was too addictive in a latchkey kid environment. The script is horrible in a funny way, and the characters would feel dull if it wasn't for their overacting. If you like cult classic camp horror, please get this game. You won't regret it.
Remember when games came inside massive boxes? I do and I miss them! You have to take into account that this was a 1995 game and at that time, it was deemed one of THE most scariest games! 8 year old me was petrified as I watched my Dad play - and yet, I LOVE THIS GAME!! The nostalgia for me is unreal! IF you want a classic point and click horror (and somewhat suspect acting), this is for you :)
IF you want top of the range graphics, with the highest quality of sound and ray tracing etc... then no. This is NOT for you. Excuse me as I hunt for The Dig, Shivers, Ripper, and Frankenstein (Tim Curry!) to relish in more 90's Nostalgia!!!
First game I ever played as a kid. Wish they'd remake it!
Was fun, a few bugs here and there and a few times I got stuck and needed a guide (genre standard though). FMV 90s games are always a blast.
Recently I have been looking for some horror games after deep diving into the genre, I saw a twitter post mentioning Phantasmagoria and it caught my interest quickly.
I went into this title blind and I am very glad I did. The story starts out slow, but there are so many Easter eggs and hidden things that keeps it very entertaining. The whole "horror" aspect didn't really kick in till around chapter 5, and even then it was still kinda goofy and cheesy, but in the best way possible.
The atmosphere, with the real actors and the CGI environment was super cool. It worked very well.
If you are into cheesy horror movies I highly recommend this title!
I've wanted to play this for years. Since the 90s, when I was a kid. I got to Day 3 and it just doesn't keep my interest. It's not scary, some of the puzzle solutions are not logical, and worst: I found myself bored. I stopped playing when the Homeless Gnome Lady and her Intellectually Disabled Adult Son (TM) showed up as comic relief. Nothing was relieved, nor did it need to be.
BANGER
This is an old school Sierra game that was ahead of its time back when it come out. Multiple endings, very good story, and very good if you like horror/puzzle games. Played this when it come out originally and played it all the way through many times, looking forward to playing this again and glad to see it on the steam marketplace now! Would recommend it for anyone that wants a complicated story game that you can play at your own pace to unravel the mystery. Very gruesome video scenes.
Proper retro point and click horror. An interesting story and some great special effects for the time.
