Honestly? Probably the best spinoff that Humongous Entertainment has made in their Junior Arcade lineup of games.

It's a simple get object from point a to point b style of puzzle, but it does it's job well at training kids to be good at puzzles and teaching them hand eye coordination, timing, and patience.

Despite really enjoying this game(and I highly recommend you play/buy it, even if you don't want to play/buy other Pajama Sam games due to it's genre or target audience, it genuinely feels fun to play as an adult), this game does have flaws.

Like most Junior Arcade games, the difficulty isn't consistent curve upward, it jumps all over the place, especially here, sure earlier levels are usually easier ones but later levels have a lot of hard levels that make you question why you struggle in a kid's game, only to give you level even easier than previous 10 levels xD

Speaking of difficulty, some levels are, genuinely tough, 15,24,27,40,66,69,72,73(probably one of the biggest difficulty spikes), 82,84, 88, 94, 96, 99 and weirdly enough, 100 level was actually relatively easy compared to previous Junior Arcade last levels. I view it as a good thing, and it helps game age well(I would have lovez to have played this game as a kid, only to 100% ace it now with relative ease) but I'm not sure how many people share my opinion, some people prefer games that are fully casual, fully hardcore or has hard moments and it puts them around easy stuff as a breeze, and this game belongs to the 3rd category.

Lastly, this game has level editor, didn't mention it in other Junior Arcade game reviews, but here, the level editor would've been great if only it had online feature/steam workshop

So yeah, if you like niche puzzle games that are relatively easy but with some surprising hard moments(well, a few minutes of thinking kinda hard), then I highly recommend you to play this one!

I accidentally put over 14 hours in this game, it's the perfect game for disassociating. Just sort the socks. There's even a cheat to give you all 200 something levels!

From the depths of my childhood, when I saw it, I had to buy it. It was one of many childhood games I've never finished thinking, "Man, this is hard". But, I beat it. The game really makes you think sometimes. Other times, you just got to be quick because you gotta turn on object or change the which way the sock is going.

All the levels are random, and if you want full access to the all the level I'm sure you can go and find the cheat code out there to type in one the "Enter Your Names Here" screen.

Nevertheless, it's a cute game with reference to together characters in the Humongous Entertainment universe. had fun. So if you pick this up, I hope you have fun too. :)

I played this a lot as a kid and I remember it being fun...until you got to the later levels. I mean, don't get me wrong, it is still fun in a general sense, and I do still recommend the game. Actually, I [i]really[/i] recommend the game for kids especially given the logic skills it teaches and reinforces. That said, the reason I say the later levels are less fun is two-fold.

For one, you can occasionally get stuck in a situation where socks overlap, but you need to separate them. Kind of annoying and can make you have to restart. The other issue is that, as the levels get more complex, you end up bouncing around to a degree that would really test a kid's (or adult's) patience and hand-eye-coordination skills. Honestly, that patience bit was what ironically kept me playing this game as a kid since I just could not do this in one sitting. Even with the faster speed setting, it would take too long. It didn't help that setting it to a higher speed was just not a good idea in certain levels, so you had to play them at the turtle's pace.

Overall, though, these are minor quibbles. The game is still interesting and it introduces neat mechanics that you have to account for. There's actually a very similar game to this presented as a mini game in Let's Explore the Airport (Junior Field Trips), another title from Humongous Entertainment...and by "very similar" I pretty much mean "basically the same." If you happen to have both titles, you can certainly go and compare the two if you are interested. The difference is mostly just in the levels and the presence of Sam here in Sock Works.

Btw...does Sam not actually know what automation is? We're controlling Sam, who is controlling the belts, etc. That's not "doing it for him." He's doing it, just with a machine. Maybe he's just referring to the folding part, not the sorted part...ehh ok. Honestly, I try not to pay too much attention to what Sam says during this game because, well, that's not the Sam voice I know and it bugs me. The voice actor did a good job, and I'm not saying otherwise. I'm just too used too accustomed to Pamela Adlon's performance, and that voice is Sam's voice to my ears. E. G. Daily does a fine job, like I said. It just makes Sam sound like he's under the weather or something....which is actually kind of fitting considering what this game foreshadows is regards to the next, proper Pajama Sam title.

Anyways, I recommend picking up Sock Works on sale via the Pajama Sam Complete Pack or the Humongous Entertainment Complete Pack.

While I have basically a glowing opinion of many of the other Humongous titles, this one is a little iffy.

By the way, I am gonna assume most people who played this, didn't care to sit there and play all 100 levels. But I did. I played all of them.

So it's a puzzle game, ostensibly made for kids. While the first few stages are not too difficult, and they do the basic sort of thing a lot of games do where they have a few stages that just exist to show you what all the parts do one by one, this game I think gets started very quickly with just throwing every single mechanic at you, and that's not such a great experience. I will say though, even though there's 100 stages, I never really got bored or felt like I was just doing the same thing over and over.

You need to put the right colored sock in the right basket. The socks always are moving, either on conveyor belts or on chutes like you'd see at the airport (this game was built out of a minigame for an airport game Humongous made) so unless you can get the sock stuck somewhere between two belts, or confined somehow, you are ALWAYS juggling socks and this is where much of the difficulty comes in, because there are many stages later on where you might need to keep an eye on 2, 3 or even 4 socks all at once in every corner of the screen and their direction.

In my opinion, the game is probably way, way, way too hard for the ages this game seems to be aimed at. Because, while you might look at it and go 'oh well how hard can it be' and the first few stages are just free, like you don't even have to do anything, once you hit level 20 or so, the gloves are off and the rest of the stages generally required me to pause the game just to see what was going on before actually planning out routes for all the socks to get where they needed to go. There were some stages that required me to actually try multiple times, and one stage in particular (level 85) is just evil.

The game has some problems with its design.

For instance, chutes can output socks pretty much in any direction, which... I think was probably not intended by the devs, not explained to the people designing levels, and some levels probably had to be patched up during testing or something like that hastily and weren't just ripped out or redone or anything, which is a shame. It does, however, make some levels like 85 significantly harder than they otherwise should be. This also means that it's RNG sometimes whether or not a sock goes down the right chute, if there are multiple copies of that chute on the stage. For instance, there's 5 chutes labelled with a 'star' so, if a red sock goes down it, the sock could come out from any of the other 4 chutes.

This was however used to great effect on some stages to basically confuse the everloving daylights out of the player, so clearly some level designers knew about it and made use of it, and some didn't. It seems very apparent to me that this is the case, anyway.

I'm just going to label the conveyor belts, the chutes, the weird flippers and other puzzle elements collectively as 'blocks' here. I think that the variety of blocks is good. I think that there's enough variety there without it being too many to remember how to deal with each one, or too few. I think though, that the game might have been better off if broken into chapters, with each one sort of bringing in one block that starts off very simple, and then is expanded on and done more and more advanced until you get to the last one which is a big challenge with advanced concepts for that block. Then you could start again with another block, and go like that, including older mechanics until you get to the last chapter or few chapters which then start using everything together.

This might have been more kid-friendly too. As it is, I would suggest you keep children far away from this because this reminded me of Factorio more than anything. With the arrows scrolling on conveyor belt, blue belts, red belts, even the weird spring machines that kinda look like a splitter or something, yeah, I weirdly felt like I was trying to route belts in Factorio.

Anyway, I think I still would recommend it, but only barely. The concept is interesting, the execution is so-so, but I still managed to beat it and it didn't really feel like a chore, I did actively want to keep playing and I enjoyed seeing just how far the game went, and the fact that it kept challenging me actually did keep me engaged even though there were one or two frustrating levels in there.

In 1997, my 7-year old self had my mind blown by one of the best puzzle games of my entire life. This game comes from Humongous Entertainment, creators of other bangers such as Putt-Putt, Freddi Fish, and Spy Fox.

The premise: Pajama Sam's mom has asked him to sort the socks - a task so very boring that he falls asleep and dream of fantastic sock-sorting machines. Ironically, after a sprint of playing SockWorks, you will also dream of sock-sorting machines thanks to the "Tetris Effect" (you've experienced this - look it up on Wikipedia).
I beat the game in 1 day, but that night my neurons continued to sort socks against my will. My dreams, just like Pajama Sam's, were filled with a tangle of red and blue conveyor belts.
Pajama Sam spends his precious REM sleep controlling intricate mechanisms with conveyor belts, gates, paint buckets, and chutes to ensure each sock ends up in the corresponding colored basket. The first levels start out super-easy to teach you how to play, and the difficulty ramps up gradually from there. The fun doesn't end when you've beaten all 100 levels - the sandbox allows you to challenge your loved ones with nightmares of your own design!
From age 10 to 34, the SockWorks soundtrack lived only in my memory. Upon playing the game again after a 24 year gap, I was delighted to find that the soundtrack still slaps.

Story: Sam is given his laundry and told by his mother to go to bed. Sam dreams about socks and the most convoluted way to put them into a laundry basket.

Game play: A random collection (yeah, I say random because the levels don't really ramp up in difficulty, but vary wildly and some even require no intervention from the player to complete) of levels that would probably entertain a child for a little while. It pales in comparison to other Pajama Sam games (the other minigame style ones are better than this one even). There is a custom level creator, but I doubt it would entice someone to buy the game for that feature.

Length: Strongly depends on your age and how bored are you to play this over any other game you own. For reference, I finished the first 15 levels in about 10 minutes.

Audio/Visuals: Sounds and music are fine, it is fitting for an edu-tainment game. The art style fits with Pajama Sam games, but nothing stellar or noteworthy.

Thoughts: It is fine, but the weakest of the Pajama Sam games, but that isn't a strong point since the minigame ones are pretty lackluster. If you are buying this for a kid, it would be more enjoyable for them, but I would still only recommend buying Sock Works in one of the bundles as the main Pajama Sam games are much better. Even if you are buying a bundle, I would wait for a sale for the amount of fun you or your child might have with it.

This game is just a copy of a minigame from another Humongous Entertainment game, but I like it anyway. In this game, you must help Sam by sorting his socks with his Sock-o-Matic machine! This game takes inspiration from the multiple paths of the Junior Adventure games by giving players random levels each time they play! And like HE's other arcade games, players can create their own levels in the game's Level Creator mode! It's a good challenging puzzle for little kids.

Pajama Sam's Sock Works is a game where instead of doing what he is told, ie. puting his socks away, Sam dreams about putting his socks away using a very convoluted machine. It would have been faster to fold your own socks Sam. One of the easiest activity game in the Humongous Games line up for my Drunk butt. The only problem I seem to have was my reaction time to some of the puzzles, you need to be quick to change the conveyor belt directions or lose imminently. Was able to finish all 100 levels, but as touch and go for a couple of levels.

While the Pajama Sam adventure games are easy to finish in a short time, the same does not count for Pajama Sam's Sock Works. The game consists of 100 levels that each generate a puzzle out of a pool of 250 options. The puzzles start off very easy, but the difficulty increases gradually, but not in a linear way. The puzzles take place in the sock-o-matic machine that Sam uses in his imagination to sort out his socks faster. Each sock has a certain color and needs to be sorted to the basket of the corresponding color. The player solves the puzzles by switching the directions of conveyor belts and other parts of the machine, so that the sock ends up in the right basket and not a basket of the wrong color. Later in the game these puzzles actually become difficult for an adult even, let alone for little children.
The game also has a level creator, which makes it far ahead of its time. With the level creator you can place your conveyor belts, socks and baskets wherever you want, with plenty of space for creativity. All in all, this game is the only Humongeous Entertainment arcade game that I really enjoyed and the only one that provides a challenge.

I just came from Let's Explore The Airport because Lost Luggage, and now I have a new game to be addicted to! :)

It's a great game! The mechanics work pretty well. Very addicting! Only critic is that the machines used to push the socks from one conveyor belt to the next lags a bit when I try to turn them on and off. But the game is over 20 years old, I highly doubt the issue will be fixed.

How 8 year olds and under were able to play this, I don't understand. Must have been geniuses or something? Anyways! It's a great game, 8/10!

I've seen better implementations of the ‘live conveyor belt' shtick in WarioWare DIY, but Sock Works overall really isn’t too bad. Plus, there’s the bonus that getting it as a part of the Pajama Sam Steam bundle makes all the main PS games slightly cheaper.
Also, who owns this many socks? Better yet, who tf folds their pairs of socks into a pile of baseballs like that? That’s probably gonna take up way more space in the dresser and be super annoying to unfold later. Please Sam, fold your socks like a normal person.

Compared to a lot of the other side games from Humongous Entertainment, Pajama Sam's Sock Works was an exception good title. It is essentially a matching game where you need to match the appropriate color sock with the appropriate colored basket.

To do this you use a machine consisting of conveyor belts (some you can alternate the direction of), sock color changing pads, bumpers, diverters, and so forth. There is no lack of thinking needed - though notably there are also some situations that require rather fine tuned control which may make this less stellar for younger kids.

Overall I think this is a decent enough game to give a positive recommendation for.

Pajama Sam's Sock Works is an ancient child friendly pathing/puzzle game from last century. Click on a number of tiles and switches to create a path for socks to travel from the source to the target. It's able to run on modern PC's through ScummVM, but this might as well be DOSBOX.

It's simply too dated to recommend, with locked resolution, 4:3 pillarboxing instead of widescreen support, and the gameplay is basically what you get from free mobile apps, so the developers are charging a bizarre $5 USD for a nostalgia gouge. What exactly is the lesson they think they're teaching children here?

Imagine this: you're looking at a pile of socks. All your socks look the freaking same. You think to yourself "how tf am I supposed to sort all these?" and "will anyone really notice if these socks are slightly different shapes?", like you didn't already know the answers. Obviously it's a fools errand to sort them properly, and of course everyone will notice because we all know everyone's constantly judging you no matter who insists that it's all in your head. Will you ever escape this sock-induced hellscape which you have crafted for yourself? Obviously not in meatspace, but in the fantastical digital universe of Pajama Sam, the perfect escape from your suffering has been created. Pajama Sam's Sock Works: a machine built with the sole purpose of carrying out the incredibly complex task of sorting socks.

For the sake of simplicity, the developers were forced to color code the socks that needed to be matched, and even then it is hardly flawless, as the machine cannot tell the difference between a sock naturally made red or one dipped in red paint, but this is likely the furthest we will ever see such technology progress. It's also made clear in-universe that such a machine is still only mere fantasy, hopefully shattering any possible delusions that could otherwise be formed by the game, as the intense level of immersion makes you ALMOST believe, for a moment, that such a machine could exist. Sadly, only in the dreams of dreams can something even vaguely representative of such a grand design be conceived, but even the slightest sliver of heaven brought to this lowly, sock-troubled Earth is worth a glowing review.

Nice transportbelt builder/manager for sorting socks of different colours. The levels have a slow start, but you can skip ahead as much as you want. Some of the titles of this series have lots of language options, but this only have voiced english and dutch. Would be great with german or swedish added to the mix, If it was ever available in those languages.

Okay, this game is surprisingly good. I bought the whole "Pajama Sam" Pack to get the games, and to try these other ones. Most of them were lackluster, young kids games, as to be expected. This one actually surprised me. It might not be the Game of the Year, but I'm having a decent time playing with it. It has solid game play, and the levels really show what's possible with this kind of game play.

If you like Pajama Sam or puzzle games, or maybe you just want casual game you pick up every so often, this game is suited for such needs.

TLDR: Abandonware Grade. Outcompeted. Saturated Genre.

Yet another example of a point&click arcadey type game to diversify from adventure games that the company made. This specific titles has aged terribly has you now have object routing game of all flavor and stripes using touch interface on anyone's phone or tablet. This title does not fullscreen correctly, has pixelated assets. I understand with limited competition and the charm of the franchise it might had made sense then... not anymore.

Really, though. I played this game when I was young, and I couldn't believe it was on Steam. Brings back a lot of good memories. If you live with kids or have kids of your own, Pajama Sam and pretty much anything else from Humongous is a pretty good time waster, and honestly this stuff is probably really good for the brain, too haha.

Me gustaría empezar este análisis advirtiendo de una cosa: el modo historia no estoy seguro de que sea recomendable para niños, no por su estética, si no por su [u]elevada dificultad[/u].
En serio, me he roto la cabeza con algunos niveles y tengo 20 años. Los niños no tendrán tanta paciencia para volver a ir a intentarlo una y otra y otra vez, y se fustrarán (alguno habrá que no, pero vaya...).

Afortunadamente, existe un modo donde cada uno puede crear sus propios niveles.

El juego para ser de 1999 luce bastante bien en la actualidad, si bien está en 4:3 y la resolución es un tanto justita en 2016 donde todo está en HD.

Hay unas pocas escenas en el juego. En inglés sin subtítulos.

Por lo demás, 100 niveles y es bastante adictivo, siempre estaba pensando: "Un nivel más y lo dejo..."

Y la cancioncita de celebración del personaje en algunos niveles se te mete en la cabeza.

I don't even know where the ♥♥♥♥ my life is going but I found entertainment in it for a period of time.... :steamsad:
It all started back in 'Nam... when I lost my leg. since then I got back on my feet.... foot... :steamsad: When I got back to the states, I had a ton of socks for my feet. Well since I only have one foot, I decided to have them sorted left from right. Well I had my brilliant son Sam, create a machine to sort them left from right. Well I'm not the brightest cause of the mine that took my leg. So my son Sam works the machine to sort socks and he loves it!*

10/10 Would lose a leg again.

*Note: In full transparency, this is a work of fiction. Yes I have to say this as some people aren't the brightest brick in the toolshed. :steamfacepalm:

Pajama Sam: Sock Works beats the new DOOM game!

I used to have this game on a CD and as a kid, I kept playing the campaign mode and made my own levels. I would say, the level customization was the best feature the game offered.

The soundtrack is impressive and is soothing. Guess what? I owe my childhood to Jeremy Soule for making the music! If the name is not recognizable, The Elder Scrolls might ring a bell.

Of course, the game has not aged well and looking back, the gameplay is very limited. It gets very repetitive and I doubt anyone would be willing to play the campaign mode twice. The level customization does help a little but due to the small and clunky interface, it does get boring after a while because of the limitations.

Essentially, the only redeemable parts of the game was the music and the ability to make custom levels. Sock Works does not offer anything new otherwise, as it is essentially taken from "Buzzy The Knowledge Bug: Let's Explore the Airport" minigame.

So then, why do I recommend this game? It's for nostalgia and good for a one-time playthrough as now, the game is easily forgotten due to better games now. As such, get the game at a deep discount if interest still holds.

Sock Works was among the spin off games to the Pajama Sam franchise. The object of the game is to control various convoy belts and other machines to sort out the right color socks in the right color baskets. As you progress further into the game, the later levels get trickier and other times, the levels are simply easy. Keep in mind that this is not an adventure game like the main franchise with the whole exploration and point and click scenario. Which is why I refer to it as a "spin-off" features Pajama Sam in a mini game theme game. If you like the Pajama Sam adventure games, then you may like this one. It's overrall an addicting game to make the time go by.

This titan of a game isn't one to be passed up. The emotional connection the viewer feels when Sam gets told to sort his socks, as well as the impending danger imposed upon the viewer when Sam decides to "shut his eyes for just a bit" before doing so, are both so incredibly deep and resplendent that the only way to describe this is as an experience. You look at good art; you experience timeless art. Similarly, you experience Pajama Sam's Sock Works instead of merely playing it. This game is a feast - a delight to the senses - and has earned its place in the phenomenal Pajama Sam series.

I remember this game fondly and, surprisingly, it holds up pretty well. As usual for the humongous arcade games there's a degree of luck here, but it's never crippling enough to the point where you can be forced into impossible situation, and it's still mostly a reactive thinking exercise. It never gets too difficult but it's not that easy, either, and it's really quite enjoyable for what it is.
