Living things that do not lust for power were reduced to a mere pursuit for survival. Haggis was once a soldier that has long abandoned the battlefield and now must take the sword once again to protect his loved ones.

JoyMasher's second game is quite more "welcoming" to the player than Oniken: never easy, the challenge can feel stiff at first, but after finding the first health upgrades and armor, it proves quite more approachable. While the "Metrodivania" label can be applied, it's closer to games like Castlevania III, Dracula X or Demon's Crest: not an intertwined world but a succession of stages which can be however revisited, especially after obtaining better gear and abilities, and are quite expansive with multiple exits to find that unlock alternate paths into the overworld map.

The graphics may appear to come genuinely from a NES in some screenshots but the first notable "cheat" is that while the action takes place in a 4:3 window, the rest of the screen is filled with two status bars. There's also a lot of multiparallax, plus cutscenes and some bosses, especially the last one, more at home on a Mega Drive. It's more of a "NES as I remembered it" than "NES as it really was".

All of that doesn't change that Odallus looks fantastic. It sports amazing spritework ranging from the protagonist also changing aspect depending on the armor found, through even regular enemies made with care and large and gruesome bosses, up to cutscenes that are beautiful while not straying from the style already adopted in Oniken. It's dark fantasy mixed with anime elements, the influence of Berserk is clear (one of the main villains rips off the Skull Knight's design). All topped by a perfect use of the limited palette, with appropriately muted colors and high contrasts that further enhance the atmosphere; in the areas where parallax is most prominent, it gets very evocative. It's one of the best looking "neo-retro" games I've seen to date.

All that artistry is fortunately not wasted, as the difficulty is balanced so well, and the pace of the progression just right, making the search for upgrades and secrets extremely satisfying. It won't last a tremendous number of hours but not a single minute of play is going to feel wasted. Not sure if I can call it "masterpiece" but a damn great game this is, even more for its price.

This is the kind of retro action game your dad swears games used to be like, except this one actually is good. Great level variety, crunchy combat and a soundtrack that sounds like a haunted Famicom trying its best. Some backtracking feels a bit “mandatory cardio” and the hitboxes occasionally cosplay as suggestions, but the vibe carries it.

O Odallus: The Dark Call manda muito bem na vibe retrô sombria. O pixel art é caprichado, a trilha sonora cria uma atmosfera incrível e o combate é gostoso, lembrando os clássicos do gênero. O problema aparece na exploração: tem bastante backtracking pra coletar itens, o que é normal em metroidvania, mas a ausência de um mapa dentro das fases deixa tudo mais cansativo do que desafiador. E aqui vai o ponto pessoal: eu sou velho, e sinceramente não tenho mais tempo pra ficar caçando item sem uma ajudinha kkk. Um mapinha ou marcador simples já resolveria 90% da fricção — não tiraria o desafio, só deixaria a experiência mais esperta e menos “onde eu tô mesmo?”

No fim, ainda vale o play, especialmente pra quem curte exploração raiz e combates retrô.

Conclusão: Nota 7/10. Vale a pena se você gosta de jogos retrô com clima dark e gameplay sólido.

Much more clunky and aggravating to play than actually hard. Yes, you can learn to use the less than stellar controls and come to terms with your character's huge hitbox. But I can't see any reason why you shouldn't play some better game instead.

Basically makes me think of Castlevania III but as a metroidvania. It's not a perfect description, but it gets you pretty close. The difficulty curve is a bit odd, starting off damned hard, getting better as you collect power ups, getting really hard again at various points, before evening out towards the end again. There are some other things I could probably nitpick, but overall it's a solid game.

- [b]Odallus: The Dark Call[/b] представляет собой классическую метроидванию со сбором бонусов, бэктрекингом и запутанными уровнями, и получением новых способностей, чтоб повторить всё вышеописанное по второму, а то и третьему кругу.
- Сюжетно же игра повествует о мастере меча Хэгнарде, тот давно устал от сражений, оставил свой меч на чердаке и ушёл [strike]сеять рожь[/strike] жить с семьёй. Но его мир рушится, когда некий культ нападает на деревню и похищает его сына. Теперь Хэгнарду приходится вновь взяться за оружие, чтобы спасти сына, а заодно и ВЕСЬ МИИИИИИР.

- Да больше об игре мне нечего сказать ибо всё кроме основы(заложенной основоположниками жанра) выполнено просто ужасно:
🔷 Визуал — убог и некрасив, глаза от него устают, а местные эффекты конкретно мешают играть.
🔷 Управление — имеет значительный импут лаг при вводе, зато его можно настроить.
🔷 Сложность — никакая, игра наипростейшая, все боссы без исключений проходятся брутфорсом, но даже и без него их паттерны примитивны и вторичны, отчего сложность их околонулевая, врагов, думаю, можно и не упоминать.
🔷 Духота — так как игра простая, а разрабам нужно, чтоб вы играли минимум 2 часа, её снабдили кучей бесполезного бэктрекинга с бонусами и способностями, что убивают остатки веселья, превращая и так имбового персонажа в просто неубиваемую машину, танкующую вообще весь урон в игре.
🔷 Музыка и звуки — они отвратительны, местная музыка откровенно бесит, а звуки чаще вводят в ступор, чем несут какую-то информацию, поэтому ориентироваться на них не выйдет.
🔷 Устаревший геймдизайн — игра полнится элементами, что абсолютно игре не нужны, какие-то нагромождения платформ, шипов и километровые стены, неясно для чего нужные.
🔷Ходячая вторичность — Если [b]Oniken[/b] хоть чем-то выделялся, то эта игра вообще своего лица не имеет,(Да даже уровни и те вторичные) это прямо вот клон клонский с носом клоунским.

A throw back to the NES/Famicom days of my youth. It's reminiscent of Faxanadu meets The Battle of Olympus. At first I was lost with it. And then a little discovery here and there opened it up. I am thoroughly enjoying this. Highly recommended.

Odallus: The Dark Call is a 2D Retro Action Platformer inspired by games like Castlevania and Ghosts n' Gouls. The game is about a warrior named Haggis who sets out on a mission to find his lost son.

There are multiple stages with many secrets and upgrades to find, including stronger weapons, armors and gear. There are many platforming sections inside each stage that will test your skills and quick reactions.

The retro OST is a big highlight even though this game was released in 2015.

The boss fights can be challenging if you don't remember the patterns and you can be overwhelmed quickly if not careful.

This is a really recommended 2D Action platformer for the fans of the genre especially if you're into retro graphics. It's a really solid and very underrated game that didn't get much attention when it released back in 2015.

Jogabilidade excelente, gráficos e trilha sonora deliciosos, tom sombrio (me lembrou bastante o mangá Berserk) e dificuldade no ponto, nem fácil nem difícil demais. Eu entendo queriam seguir o estulo de hogos antigos, mas não precisava fazer a jogabilidade meio truncada de propósito né? Kkkk. Pelo menos, ppr mais que você perca, nas próximas tentativas as portas que você abriu continuam dessa forma, não precisa achar as chaves de novo, e os continues são ilimitados.

O pessoal diz que o jogo não é tão difícil pra o estilo, mas pra alguém como eu, que está longe dos jogos retrô a um tempo pode ser bem desafiador, apesar de bastante divertido.

Vale muito a pena considerando o precinho que ele fica nas promoções.

dang...and i thought oniken was great. the devs stroke gold with another alltime classic game!!
these guys just really "get" 8bit nintendo design (like the shovel knight devs), in a way that so many other indies fail to do so.

odallus essentially is a homage to various retro games, most specifically castlevania (some aesthetic references to rondo of blood, surprisingly), with a bit of demon's crest/GnG (you start the game with extra skins based on simon belmont, red arremer/firebrand and sir arthur). levels are traversed in linear order with eventual backtracking. unlike a game i recently played called aggelos, there is nothing too obtuse to figure out, or any silly fetch quests. the final boss is tough but you'll earn enough special weapon upgrades at that point to tank him
[spoiler] you can end up finding 3 "P" rooms to fight a knight boss and you'll earn the dark armor, which by using 10 subweapon currency, you can use a special subweapon. the fire-shield in particular is quite OP against bosses. these P rooms were not difficult to find, i pretty much stumbled upon them as i went off beaten path [/spoiler]

one great thing about this game, is although it does not use an in-level map (the levels are relatively linear with alternate paths and loops), the world map straight up gives you a little checklist of how many secrets are left, if you killed the boss, and shows you if you have found the secret level. none of this is obtuse. you won't need every subweapon quantity increase item to beat the game, but getting most of the heart pieces is recommended.
my playtime says 6 hours but in total it took about 4 hours. light and breezy.
pros:
- nails the NES color limitations and features some grotesque art on the bosses
- boss fights and graphics are overall improved compared to oniken
- soundtrack is as good if not better than oniken
- only encountered one bug and it was very very minor
- features castlevania style physics, but less exaggerated to minimize cheapness in difficulty
- pits are not death, they lead to secrets
- a couple auto-scroller sections to break up the flow but less so than oniken
cons:
- maybe a tad more enemy variety or sub-weapon types? only 3 sub-weapons

that's really it! i have no real other critiques of this game. otherwise brilliantly designed

This is the third time I've tried to enjoy this game. I'm done.

If I push you underwater and then mock you for not being able to breathe, that would be like the real life version of this game.

Odallus exemplifies why Quality of Life matters: Because older games were often just plain cruel.

This game is old school in many ways.

In some ways this is good.

- The gfx are large and have a lot of colour and personality.
- It's obvious what things do and how to move.
- I never played on a ZX Spectrum but I imagine it would feel a lot like this.

In other ways it's just plain crap.

- The music can't be turned off. In 2025 that's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke.
- The setup program, which must be run first every time you want to play the game, won't allow me to actually change anything. So what's the point of it?
- The first time I ran it, the screen was blank. I still don't understand what happened, why it's not blank anymore. I changed nothing (see also 'won't allow me to change anything')

And as for the gameplay? It's fine, but the design consistently lets it down.

Want to jump and attack that guy on that ledge? No you don't. You want to grab the ledge and hang there, OBVIOUSLY.

And what the hell is the combat supposed to be? I was around during the 8 bit era and a lot of those games were just cruel. This emulates that perfectly.

A little too well.

The second batch of enemies are guaranteed to kill the unwary player, and many of the wary ones.

In modern games this is done to teach you about the properties of those enemies.

Here - because it's based on older games - it's just done because '♥♥♥♥ you, player'.

And your weapon is WAY too slow for the amount of enemies they throw at you.

Ideally we'd have a game with retro graphics but modern sensibilities.

This is basically just an older game that can run on modern computers. The devs completely ignored the concept of Quality of Life.

When a game is as prickish as this game is, you usually get tools to deal with it. There's a double-jump, or a basic tutorial, or even some movement skills. This game has NONE of that. You have a very slow sword and can pick up throwing axes.

Maybe I don't want to be forced to listen to music.

Maybe I wanted something cool to play while listening to podcasts.

Maybe I wanted to spend a little time in a gameworld chilling out, feeling powerful and cool like a *game* is supposed to do.

Maybe I might uninstall this 'game' and play something fun instead.

Level design is smartly constructed, built around nonlinear exploration and backtracking once you earn new movement tools—double jumps, water traversal, and so on. What impresses most is how the game opens up: initially straightforward, but gradually revealing secrets, shortcuts, and alternate paths that beg for a second run. Combat is slower and weightier than typical action-platformers, but it’s intentional—you’re not here to button mash, you're here to survive. Enemy patterns are predictable but lethal, and boss encounters are fair but unforgiving if you don’t learn their rhythms.

Visually, the game delivers gritty 8-bit sprites that avoid the “crushed color” syndrome plaguing other retro indies. The art direction leans hard into gothic horror with crumbling ruins, haunted cathedrals, and corrupted monsters oozing menace. The soundtrack nails the eerie atmosphere too—chiptune with dread baked into the composition.

There’s a slight clunk to the controls—not broken, just old-school inertia by design—and the game occasionally drags in late-game item hunts. It’s still a far more respectful experience than many of its nostalgic peers.

Runs flawlessly on Steam Deck with responsive controls, no performance hiccups, and crisp visuals that scale well to the handheld’s screen.

A really fun throwback type game that merges elements of Classicvania and Metroidvania; levels are largely linear, but all have hidden secrets off the beaten path, many of which are crucial upgrades that fundamentally change how your character plays. You wind up revisiting levels later on after you get some movement options, and the power curve was pretty much perfect; my character was noticeably more resilient by the game's end, and the game knew it too, because it ramps up in challenge significantly in the final few levels. Like the Classicvanias of old, levels are more about positioning and timing than overtly difficult enemy encounters. While your character moves much faster than the Belmonts used to, it's still important to take in your surroundings and consider when to perform certain actions.

Meanwhile, the presentation is excellent. The few pixel cut scenes look fantastic, with really detailed and expressive character models. In game it's like a slightly upgraded NES title, with consistently great looking pixel art across the board, especially when it comes to the design of the bosses. The music is no slouch either. It's not a super expansive sound track, but what's here stands proudly alongside the many iconic chip tunes of the past.

The game is moderately challenging for most of its run time, but as I mentioned before, it ramps up pretty significantly in the last couple levels, and I found the final boss to be an overall satisfying if somewhat bruatl challenge; if you can learn boss patterns quickly, you can take down most foes in not much time at all. By the end I felt that the game was fair but on the harder side.

Overall this is just a really fun game that manages to modernize the Classicvania format. It won't win over people that don't care for the "clunkier" titles in the legendary franchise, but I really enjoyed how it provided a compact and satisfying challenge, and the medeival horror vibes and great presentation are the cherry on top.

Just nope ...

Game is a buggy half assed mess
Half the time i walk into a level i need to "reset" the game because my Life bar doesn't load right, 4 empty hearts instead of my actual hearts and even healing doesn't fix it.
Try to buy something in a store ? Sometimes it goes well , sometimes it just "freezes" overlapping the game and the only way out is pausing and back to the map with you !
Controls aren't Sharp either, The Dash-Jumps / Double Jumps / Floating end up being a mess to pull off right when those 3 actions are dispatched upon 2 buttons pressed in multiple orders
I get the "old games were hard" but damn this one decides to crank it to 11 at the expense of Fun.

One Good thing though, it's on the cheap side

I think I picked this up for the metroidvania tag; honestly I cannot recall. I loved the Metroid games on GBA, but I despise Castlevania. Tried at least 6 of that series, disliked every one. I also hate most platformers.

Odallus has a solid style, you can control your jump (unlike in several 'vanias), and overall the controls feel good. The problem for me is 4-fold: There's no easy mode, shop prices increase WITH EVERY PURCHASE, there's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lives system like this is Mario, and there's no way to take health items into boss fights.

This game is some hardcore no-lifer's wet dream. I died to the first boss 6 times (being able to afford additional lives 3 times before the price became insane), and I'm done. This game is trash.

Gran juego como los de antes. Hay que recorrer el mapa y buscar a conciencia objetos que te aportan mejoras para afrontar la dificultad según avanzas. Los mapas están trabajados, los enemigos tienen lo suyo y los bosses tienen su estrategia para poder vencerlos. Todo esto se me ha hecho muy entretenido.

What can I say about this absolute masterpiece of a game? Absolutely nothing bad. Odallus: The Dark Call is a game made by the same devs that made the Ninja-Gaiden-esk game Oniken that I reviewed not long ago, but this one is more Castlevania from the NES era than anything.

You play as Haggis, a warrior and a hunter who is trying to find his son, who disappeared during a raid by demons that left his village in complete disarray. Prawling the nearby fields, Haggis is confused, as these demons seem to be serving a higher purpose and are led and organized by some verily conscious demonlords, each holding a piece of the legendary gemstone called the Odallus. Will he find his son and uncover the gem's secret?

This game is very successful at merging both Castlevania and Berserk... It just gives off such Berserk vibes as Haggis' son is not ACTUALLY who he thought he was, just like Griffith from Berserk. Odallus: The Dark Call is an 8-bit masterpiece and Haggis is a very likeable character even though he doesn't speak much. You can tell that the game was made with love. There are only nine levels, but the amount of backtracking you'll have to do to enjoy some collectibles-hunting is massive. I had to go back to level one six times, one time each time I find a new artefact that allows access to certain special powers: the Harpy's boots that you only discover in the latest levels will allow you to double jump, and you know what double jumping means? Yup, collectible-hunting.

The bosses are rage-inducing, Dark-souls style, the storyline builds itself around you as you interact with bosses and NPCs of this dystopian universe. It's an amazing game that you MUST have in your library, even if you don't like Castlevania. [b]10/10[/b], I enjoyed every single bit of it, my only complaint is that it was just too short... and the Berserk-ish ending is like... just unexpected! Yeah well played devs, well played.

Muito bom, mas bem dificil de zerar. Chegou a travar em alguns momentos e até a crashar, mas graças a Deus não perdi o save, então consegui zerar. O gameplay é bem legal, as fases tbm, só o pulo que precisaria ser melhorado, para deixa-lo mais preciso, já que em algumas fases isso se faz necessário. Voltei para jogar novamente e fazer 100%. Ptz, tentei passar pano mas os controles de pulo são bem bugados. Fora duas conquistas que vi que tbm estão bugadas (vi varias reclamações na internet).... Enfim, em uma promoção, e se vc quiser apenas chegar no final, não se importando de passar raiva tentando fazer 100%, até vai. Mas fora isso, infelizmente tive q mudar para não recomendo. Muito promissor, mas faltou um pouquinho de polimento....

Mas falando serio agora o jogo não é difícil e ele instiga bastante o jogador a ir e voltar nas fases pra poder explorar mais, isso acaba sendo obrigatório para poder finalizar o jogo, mas não se preocupe, as fazes não são absurdas e longas, quando você menos notar vai estar voltando na primeira fase só pra pegar algum segredo que deixou por não saber como pegar ele antes.
A jogabilidade é simples, você anda, abaixa, pula e bate. Os inimigos do jogo não são um desafio e os bosses são fáceis de se perceber o padrão de cada

Acho lindo os gráficos da época mas não os crontoles travados.. NÃO TER CONTROLES RESPONSIVOS AOS COMANDOS do jogador.. somente para aumentar o tempo e a dificuldade do jogo artificialmente é desleal... droppei quase no final pq não estava aguentando mas lutar contra os controles do jogo e não contra os desafios... Real, se pudesse pediria reembolso...
Não me lembro da última vez q um jogo só me fez ficar frustrado como esse, nem CONTRA me tirou do sério como os controles travados desse jogo...

I've had my eye on this one for a long time. It was good, it draws influence from a few demon oriented platformer classics while still being its own thing. Level design & secret exits reminded me of Demon's Crest, which is listed as one of this game's inspirations. Very old school game design, for better or worse. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Achievements were a little buggy. Pretty unforgiving all around the board.

Este jogo tem um pouco de passado com um pouco de futuro, com vários pontos legais, outros nem tanto

Visualmente ele me agrada muito, toda esse visual nostálgico é bem trabalhado, criando todo um clima sombrio de Dark fantasy, que me lembra muito Berserk

o Jogo tenta criar uma historia, aprofundando com vários textos espalhados, mas tudo me parece muito batido, mas funcional

O level design é descente, com muitos segredos recompensadores para se descobrir e uma taxa de diversidade pra não ficar tão maçante

Eu acho que esse jogo, querendo trazer algo antigo com elementos novos acabou deixando algumas coisas chatas, como você reiniciar o o mapa toda vez que sai do jogo, e um sistema de vidas que ficou ali mais pra encher o saco do que acrescentar qualquer coisa

Os chefes também não são lá muita coisa, a maioria não traz uma dinâmica legal de combate e são bem esquecíveis, e inclusive alguns são control c control v de outras franquias (tipo a mother brain de metroid)

Odallus tem uma proposta bastante parecida com The Messenger, mas creio que The Messenger foi bem melhor ao trazer essa parada de nostalgia + modernidade.

Porém é um bom e curto jogo, da pra entreter

The kind of retro style and soundtrack that makes me remember of the good old days of the 8-bit era. Reminds me a little of Castlevania Rondo of Blood, where you can go back to previous stages to find more secrets and passages, but this isn`t exactly necessary as it would be in a metroidvania.

Still checking this one... For a retro game seems ok. Gameplay is like Castlevania. There's some variety going on which is good. Music and sounds are well made. Progress throughout the stage is partially saved so you don't have to collect same keys all the time. Level design is soild but some enemies might feel a bit annoying... Game have issues with some controllers not working at all. I think this one might be interesting for retro gamers.

A very Fun well done Old School Castlevania style game that is reminiscent of the NES era. With 8 areas to explore, tons of bosses to fight and a good story to wrap everything up. The pixel art was very nice and the enemy designs were pretty good too. You start off super weak, having to pay attention to enemies and your health but the more you play and explore the more of a power house you become to the point where at the end of the game you feel incredibly powerful plowing through enemies and bosses (as long as you find the upgrades of course).

Overall I recommend this game if you are looking for a classic Castlevania Style game with that NES type Feel and look.

Odallus' description says that Castlevania was one of its inspirations, and having just finished it, I can confirm that it delivers!

The gameplay is pretty great and well-balanced for the most part, introducing the traditional metroidvania format to a classic Castlevania setting. It is relatively short (my 100% normal playthrough clocked in at about 5ish hours), so none of the combat or exploration overstays its welcome.

On the negative side, most of the music was pretty middling to me (but your mileage may vary). Additionally, although I mostly enjoyed the combat, later encounters tend to be pretty easy if you have the strongest sword (which you can get early if you're good at the game's platforming), and the final battle was pretty ridiculous, even on normal difficulty.

The price is mostly right too, even at the full $10 (and even better value during a sale). Highly recommend this if you're looking for a great classic Castlevania experience!

Odallus is a half decent game, and I wanted to give it a thumbs up, but at the end of the day (and once I fought the last boss) I realised that this game is basically a copy paste of older games, without really thinking what make these games good, and what made them bad.

There was never a time in this game where i felt things were spot on. Nothing was really all that much fun, because there was always some mechanic, design, gameplay element or just general feeling that ruined the mood.

As always with modern gaming though, I want to say that this game isnt bad in that its terrible., But with how many games there are out there, I think there are much better options to go for.

De los primeros juegos que compré para mi cuenta de Steam (juraría que la primera semana que me la hice) y que siempre fui aparcando porque se me hacía difícil.
Le he pillado el truco a base de tesón y cabezonería y vaya juegarral más bueno.
Metroidvania atípico ya que va por niveles individuales en vez de un mapa conectado, pero tiene todos los tropos del género y un aura de misterio y aventura inigualable.
Si alguien llegó a jugar a Infernax le diría que es una experiencia con muchos puntos en común.

I wouldn't completely advise against it, it is an interesting game despite its problems it's not one of the worst games, but I'd only recommend it if it's something that you're really curious about. My overall impression of the game is more mixed and tinging towards negative and in short, this game wants to bring back much of the bad sides of old games.

This ould've been a fun little game but instead of doing something fun, it opted to be frustrating by implementing most of the worst aspects of old platformers, too tight jumps, annoying enemy placements, sudden respawning enemies at random, controls that are too clunky and sluggish for this type of platforming or combat, and probably the biggest issue of all, the player's massive sprite and hitbox, which amplifies every single one of these problems. Beating the game didn't take long and to be fair, the developers did account for how much unavoidable damage there could be in the game, but this just wasn't fun to see through to the end.

I generally do not understand why anyone would ever want to bring any of these elements back from when this genre was still growing, because you can make challenging stuff without frustrating the player, it's why people don't check these games out, most of them have memories of how infuriating these games could get and I don't blame them.. These parts add nothing to the game except for leaving resentment behind and a general feeling of, "thank god, I never have to do that stupid ♥♥♥♥ again."

Last point about the game, what was the point of those limited lives?.. I never reached that permanent game over even upon 100%-ing it and much like earlier points, it just added more frustration.
Think about it when you implement things like these.. What are you really adding towards a game that can take 5+ hours to 100% complete, by taking away all of that? This makes sense for roguelikes because the whole games are designed around that, but this game is inspired by games with long play time progression that from even back in those old 8-16 bit console days, they had done away with this kind of permanent game over and for good reason.. Losing progress and needing to backtrack multiple times in a multiple hours long save file is more than enough.

all in all, this kind of game makes me very wary of ever trying more indie games, because while I love indie games and I was digging the visual style this game had, I wish this type of old and outdated game design to stay buried deep underground with all ancient kingdoms. We're long past this stage of gaming and as an old head playing these games, I don't miss them at all, I'm a much happier camper when we get games like Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, and so on.
