I don't exactly know what to say about this game. It was sitting on my library for such a long time but I know I got to play it and oh boy this was such a ride. It is one of the best games for its genre. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed the amount of times I went on side objectives, very impressive for being confined to a single building. Observer gives an ever-present feeling of claustrophobia and unease for a large portion of the game. The atmosphere is immaculate, and the lighting is so gorgeous! (If your PC is powerful enough don't forget to turn on raytracing and all that good stuff.) The world feels extremely in-depth for it again being set in a single building!

[b] NOT SO GOOD THINGS: [/b]

I did encounter a couple of issues with physics bugs, And I only crashed once. An sort of meh thing about the experience was this one enemy, it just felt pretty bland and not that imposing on the player. It more or less just felt like a nuisance to the pacing. But should not be a deal breaker for anyone. Some mistimed sequences for spooks and other things, but wasn't too common.

I wanted so desperately to love this.

The first few hours are steeped in intrigue with palpable tension and a whole lot of atmosphere to tie it all together. But once you get far enough into the apartment building and start plugging yourself into people's minds, the incredibly heavy handed symbolism and jump scare hallways really start to unravel the threads that made the early game interesting. Sure, I enjoyed picking up the Phage victim cards and exploring everything I possibly could, but there comes a point where you're "Observing" the story instead of experiencing it.

J’ai vécu des sensations contradictoires en jouant à [i]Observer: System Redux[/i], entre autres parce que je m’attendais peut-être à autre chose lors de l’achat de ce jeu, aguiché que j’étais à la vue des images cyberpunk qui donnent inévitablement envie aux amateurs du genre, et c’est pourquoi l’avis qui suit sera moins une critique qu’un avertissement à ceux qui voudraient se lancer dans l’aventure sans trop savoir où ils mettent les pieds.

Je vais un peu commencer par la fin en précisant immédiatement ce que j’entends par « sensations contradictoires ». J’ai terminé le jeu en 9h environ. Pendant les 4 ou 5 premières heures, j’étais convaincu de deux choses : je n’irai pas jusqu’au bout du jeu et j’allais attribuer une note négative à [i]Observer: System Redux[/i]. En un mot : je n’y trouvais pas mon compte. Mais qu’est-ce qui n’allait pas ? Pourquoi la sauce ne prenait-elle pas alors que je devais être le type même de joueurs pour lequel [i]Observer: System Redux[/i] était taillé ?

[u]Premier problème :[/u] le gameplay. Très mauvais. Dans [i]Observer: System Redux[/i], ouvrir la moindre porte est un enfer ! Il faut faire des mouvements hasardeux avec la souris tout en restant appuyé sur une touche du clavier, le tout pour qu’une fois sur deux, la porte finisse par ne pas s’ouvrir complètement et qu’il faille alors s’y reprendre. Or, étant donné que 50 % des interactions du jeu consistent précisément à ouvrir des portes, vous comprenez l’ampleur du problème. Ah !, entre parenthèses, ne perdez pas votre temps (et vos nerfs !) à ouvrir et fouiller les nombreux placards, il n’y a rien dedans pour 99% d’entre eux.

[u]Deuxième problème :[/u] l’interface de notre journal de bord. Une usine à gaz sous-optimale ! L’ordre y est peu clair. Retrouver et consulter une entrée (pour par exemple remettre la main sur un code nécessaire à la progression) est un parcours du combattant. Mon conseil aux futurs joueurs : notez les codes d’accès que vous trouverez sur une feuille de papier.

[u]Troisième problème :[/u] les bugs. Il y en a un peu. Pas beaucoup. Mais un peu malgré tout. Or, le souci, c’est lorsque ces bugs surviennent durant les phases « psychédéliques » du jeu, car, dès lors, il devient impossible de savoir si on est face à un bug véritable ou un glitch qui fait pleinement partie de l’histoire. À un moment de ma partie, je suis ainsi resté bloqué pendant 10 minutes à essayer de résoudre sans succès une énigme psychédélique qui n’était, en vérité, qu’un bug qui avait figé les mouvements de mon personnage.

[u]Quatrième problème :[/u] l’absence de vie dans [i]Observer: System Redux[/i] et, plus généralement, de variété dans les environnements. Pour schématiser : on se retrouve bloqué dans cet immeuble labyrinthique, à toquer vainement aux portes des gens pour ne jamais rencontrer personne, sinon le gardien d’immeuble, en début de partie, lequel se révèle être plus proche d’une machine que d’un être humain. Et c’est de ce sujet dont il me faut parler plus en détail, car je sais maintenant que mon incompréhension quant à la nature d’[i]Observer: System Redux[/i] venait de là. C’est à cause de cette incompréhension initiale que je n’arrivais pas à accrocher au jeu durant mes 4 ou 5 premières heures de jeu.

Lorsqu’on aime le genre cyberpunk et qu’on a joué à des jeux comme par exemple [i]Deus Ex: Mankind Divided[/i], [i]Cyberpunk 2077[/i], [i]Syndicate[/i] ou [i]Watch_Dogs[/i], qu’on a lu et vu les films et les livres références du genre, on peut vite s’imaginer ces foules anonymes d’humains augmentés qui grouillent aux pieds de tours géantes propriétés des mégacorporations corrompues. Disons que c’est là l’image d'Épinal du cyberpunk. Aussi est-on surpris avec [i]Observer: System Redux[/i] – qui se présente comme un jeu cyberpunk par excellence – lorsqu’on constate qu’il se passe complètement de cette foule. Dans [i]Observer: System Redux[/i], il n’y a presque personne. C’est vide de vie.

C’est que – là est le point fondamental pour s’engager dans [i]Observer: System Redux[/i] sans se faire une fausse idée sur la marchandise ! – [b]ce jeu a décidé en conscience de se focaliser sur un des concepts clés du cyberpunk : la connexion neuronale[/b].

[i]Observer: System Redux[/i] est un jeu cyberpunk focalisé sur la connexion neuronale. Sur le piratage de l’esprit. Sur la réalité virtuelle et l’effacement de la distinction entre le réel et le virtuel. Sur le doute quant à la véracité de ce qui est remonté par nos sens (d’ailleurs, avec ses seuls sens humains et sans ses implants cybernétiques permettant la Vision EM, la BIO Visio et la Vision Nocturne, notre enquêteur n’aurait découvert que bien peu d’indices). Sur l’illusion des perceptions. Sur la perte de contrôle et la possible implosion mentale qui accompagne un tel monde où la technologie réussit si bien à simuler le réel. La prise de drogue (la « synchrozine ») vise à stabiliser l’esprit humain qui, sans elle, aurait tôt fait de devenir instable et paranoïaque jusqu’à sans doute s’imaginer être un « cerveau dans la cuve », pour reprendre une idée philosophique connue des amateurs de SF.

[b]Lorsqu’on a compris le sujet d’[i]Observer: System Redux[/i], lorsqu’on a compris l’enjeu, on tolère beaucoup mieux ses nombreuses phases « psychédéliques », ses glitchs et ses artefacts visuels, toutes ses trouvailles esthétiques produites en exploitant avec un certain brio l’Unreal Engine, car l’objectif est de faire vivre au joueur l’effet ressenti par l’usage de la connexion neuronale. Sur ce plan, [i]Observer: System Redux[/i] est une belle réussite[/b].

J’ai finalement compris cette erreur qui fait que j’ai eu tant de mal à entrer dans le jeu au début. Outre le fait que j’avais sous-estimé la dimension introspective du jeu, j’ai aussi passé trop de temps à explorer et à me perdre dans cet immeuble insalubre qui sert plus ou moins d’unique décor pour tout le jeu. Fasciné que j’étais par son esthétique très cyberpunk, c’est-à-dire ce mélange caractéristique de « high tech, low life » où se mêlent chiottes immondes et câblages épais de machines cybernétiques sophistiquées, j’ai tourné en rond, bouclé dans le vide comme un esprit borné tourne sur lui-même au lieu de chercher à avancer.

Voici donc mon ultime conseil pour les futurs joueurs d’[i]Observer: System Redux[/i] afin qu’ils profitent pleinement de l’expérience : [b]Ne vous perdez pas dans le labyrinthe. Ne cherchez pas à explorer chaque recoin, n’ouvrez pas tous ces satanés placards inutiles !, ne perdez pas votre temps à chercher des « objets », ni même à parler à chaque locataire. Tout ceci est artificiel, illusoire, inutile. L’essentiel est ailleurs[/b].

Je termine en précisant un point important : bien que le jeu joue sur la problématique de l’illusion du réel, il n’en demeure pas moins qu’il propose une vraie intrigue, une vraie enquête policière, avec un vrai dénouement. Même si le jeu autorise les discussions interprétatives, j’aurais personnellement très mal accepté une dérobade à la David Lynch où les questions soulevées se retrouvent à la fin sans réponse, où tout et son contraire peuvent être soutenus, où les choses sont sans queue ni tête. [i]Observer: System Redux[/i] évite de tomber dans ce piège facile et paresseux alors même que le thème de la réalité simulée pouvait l’y inviter.

En conclusion, [b]je recommande [i]Observer: System Redux[/i]. De tous les jeux cyberpunk auxquels j’ai joué, je ne suis pas loin de penser que c’est peut-être celui qui incarne le mieux l’essence du genre.[/b] Un genre sombre, noir même, triste, décadent, pourrissant, déshumanisé, vide et nihiliste, autrement dit : pas un monde dans lequel on s’amuse. Or, dans [i]Observer: System Redux[/i], vous ne vous amuserez pas. Vous essaierez juste de vous y retrouver. Et c’est déjà toute une affaire !

My played time may just show 4.5hrs, but I completed it before in the initial version. This game got into my head like so many horror games failed to do. It was intelligent and affecting, with excellent voice acting and a disturbing story arc. The worst parts are where there are actual monsters, because they're just not scary. They are more tedious. Those are the boring parts. They are not that common. The monstrous realizations as you discover things are far more affective. But the way it gets into your head if you pay attention makes it into my top five horror games.
This is an excellent psychological horror, with some boring parts where you run around from unscary monsters.
The System Redux version is not something I have finished yet, but it seems a huge improvement in many ways. The graphics are a big step up, and this game is quite graphics heavy. I have heard, but not experienced yet, that some of the more annoying sequences have been reduced.

As far as Sci-Fi psychological horror goes, I put it up there with the best. But this is not an action focussed game. It is not Alien: Isolation or Dead Space. It is closer to SOMA. It is a slow crawl into your own head, and how you would respond as you learn all the information it gives you.

Play it alone. In the dark. With some good headphones.

This is a very good game for those who love amazing graphics, good sound, strong and unusual plot. But the gameplay is not suitable for everyone, the game is not suitable for those who are poorly oriented in a confined space (it is not as monotonous as in Control, it is not so difficult) and who have very little patience. But there's no need to run and hide and die forever (like in an Amnesia Bunker).

Are you kidding me??? The very first scene in this very shameful quality game makes you open a log only to get that log stuck in open position and NOT allowing you to close it, which halts the gameplay and does not allow you to progress any further. This is the first 20 seconds of the game, during the "getting familiar" with the gameplay story and controls. You cannot do anything about it according to the forum responses on the game support. The manufacturer says this is "known issue" and "the team is working on fixing it", and it was posted in 2017, 9 years ago! I restarted the game multiple times to wait to get through idiotic narration and get stuck again in the same place.

I have never hated a game so much in my entire life. Every single moment of this chaotic, confusing, glitchy, clunky mess was absolute torture. I DNF'd so many times but came back because I really can't leave something undone. I cannot tell you the amount of times I said "Please put me out of my misery already, for the love of GOD!" It is gross, uncomfortable, lacking any direction, and with a let down of an ending. The doors made me want to rage out half the time, nothing about this game is intuitive from a user interface perspective. It will box you into a very linear progression with the illusion that you're free to roam but every single door will be blocked until you do one very specific and easily overlooked thing to progress the storyline. It was literally painful sitting through the visual garbage of the neural interrogations. I wish I could get my money back, but I can't because I wanted to complete this piece of crap game and not let it win. However, do yourself a favor and avoid this trash of a game.

GREAT visual easthetic, GREAT sound and story on 6/10 (leaving a lot of questions) but quite poor technical condition made me to drop this game 3 or 4 times.
THe WORST part of the game is Helena's memories: got there one softlock; almost got sick due to the office scenes; and quite annoying stealth. Disturbing that game is ALWAYS changing FOV: after reload it resets, while crouching it's zoomed, in the dialogues it also different, wtf, why???
Mouse sensitivity has this feature of "Mouse acceleration" when slow movements having crazy sensivity and vice versa fast movements through whole mouspad turning character only on 180 deegres, and settingsfr sensivity is seems useless for it, why?????

I was initially interested in this when I saw that Rutger Hauer voices the protagonist, since I'm a fan of Bladerunner.
In truth, this is a clunky mess of a walking sim with an awful UI and hardly any actual gameplay at all.
Buy if you enjoy having epileptic fits brought on by flashing lights and shaking visuals that'll bring you near nausea, since these devs seem to think this is what 'horror' entails.

I was hesitant between a positive and a negative review, but finally I sticked to the only reason why I kept playing it until the end.

It is Rutger Hauer.

He just brought voice acting to such a level that I have nothing to compare it with. The character feels alive: old, tired and struggling to keep himself together and push forward. Even if the dialogue lines are unremarkable, it is all about how they are voiced. Rest in peace, legend.

As for the game, I see a common flaw in every game by Bloober Team - including the latest Silent Hill 2 remake.

It is style over substance.

While making brilliant immersive visuals, the team didn't put much meaning into them. Glitches for the sake of glitches. Scares for the sake of scares. Text notes that don't uncover neither the characters nor deepen the setting. It is all just your typical grim cyberpunk universe and everything you expect to find there. With little depth.

Gameplay-wise Observer is your typical walking simulator. However, tangled and claustrophobic corridors quickly start becoming boring and hinder the urge to explore. You saw one - you have seen them all. And dream sequences are linear and suffer from the general lack of meaning in their rich visuals and special effects.

Although Observer tells a decent story, I had to force myself to reach its end. There is too little of Rutger Hauer in the middle part of the game to enjoy it.

A decent narrative with too much experiments. It seems that the game just tries to play it cool and shouts "hey I am not like others".

It tries to hold a decent narrative for first 3 hours, but then something happens, and the storyline just disappears into the madness of psychodelia dystopian cyberpunk philosophy walking simulator with noir detective elements. This mix-up doesn't open up the story. It conceals true thoughts behind this surreal arthouse forcing the player to overthink where this overthinking is redundant. But the passage of the story is quite simple.

The atmosphere is the best part. Maybe the game would suit the ones who adore arthouse. I appreciate it brings up important issues.

Observer: System Redux (Remastered Observer) Game Review
(Disclaimer - This is just my opinion and may be unpopular, or disliked. Also, if you are sensitive to bright or flashing lights and experience epilepsy or seizures this game may not be for you.)

(Additional Note - Code for me just fan girling)
I adore this game from two perspectives other than it was done well.
1. The horror genre with touches of Cyberpunk was done so well with the general environment, story, tension while playing, the whole vibe very similar to Blade Runner style directions shot in a Layer's of Fear perspective. (Layers of Fear also absolutely phenomenal - I will be leaving a review for that at some point.) I don't want to over-promote, but really a cinimatic master piece and the Cyberpunk shot in Layers of Fear just gives the artsy depth of a deeper story and meaning to it all.
2. From what I assume this was one of Rutger Hauer last projects, having this absolute wonderful soul present in the genre he really made an impact in for me with his Blade Runner performance of "Roy Batty" that had me in tears doing it again here as "Daniel Lazarski" is an absolute priviledge and I do really feel the game deserves to be played again and again as it is really just worth it.

(General)
1. The game is a Cyberpunk, Psychological, Indie Horror game.
2. You play as an investigator that has to go to a place due a suspicious call and begin your investigation.
3. The game can be played at a leisurely pace and for the most part the saves work with, but there can be cases where something doesn't load properly causing you to have to load back, etc.

(Positive)
1. They stayed true to the Cyberpunk genre and did it so well.
2. The game has an amazing story that is both eerie and touching.
3. The side story's are also done well and adds some length to the game.
4. The visuals are done well and the game has so many creative things from the way exposed wires hang on walls to books that you can view during the game that change ever so slightly with time. They really focused on even the smallest details making the game also have an underlying story beneath the story itself expressed through its atmosphere.
5. The story is done well and follows through until the end not losing momentum or point.
6. The main story is engaging and keeps you invested and the side story + visuals just add to keeping your attention on the game.
7. The characters in the game are diverse and when engaging with people, etc in game they all feel like they have different personalities, etc adding to the whole experience.
8. The investigation aspect is very neat and kinda reminders me of Batman Arkham Asylum, etc.
9. The cases investigated are interesting and a lot of work got put into it.
10. The graphics is done really well.

(Negative)
1. There are people that don't like the Cyberpunk genre so this might not be for you if that is the case.
2. The game doesn't always load saves properly, but for the most part there are no issues. (It only happened to me once when I was investigating room 108 I think.)
3. Due to it being Unreal Engine some people may experience issues. I myself got booted a few times from the game, but it did save my progress so I didn't lose progress.
4. If you are not a fan of the style Layers of Fear was done in then this game will be no different and may not be for you.
5. It is heavily a Psychological Horror so it eerie and has jump scares, but for the most part is atmosphere wise and visually tense. (This is not a negative for me, but there are people that don't enjoy this style of Horror and prefer something closer to a Slasher, etc and that is also okay this just means those people might not enjoy this game all that much.)

Making it more linear and less of a "sensory experience sprinkled with some exploratory gameplay because it's a video game" would've been more enjoyable.

I started this game mid last year and unistalled it after a half hour because I was slightly annoyed and it seemed boring.

I came back after a few other games and boy I am glad I did!

The first part sets this up to be just a detective story, but the game slowly unravels into something much much more. I enjoyed the puzzles, the background story, the set and sound decisions and the overall plot.

I definitely recommend it for fans of dystopian cyberpunk with some horror elements and a heavy dose of questioning reality.
