It is just bad. Looks like a gem, plays like a confusing mess of hidden mechanics that will leave you saying, "This isn't what I thought I was paying for."

If you are looking for a sailing simulator, it will feel like an arcade.
If you are looking for a MMO, it will feel like a ghost town.
If you are looking for an action game, it will feel like a grindy eco sim.
If you are looking for playground bullying, verbal abuse, elitism, and game changing updates that pander to the very few OG's, you will find all of that.

Finally, if you were tricked into buying one of more of the shiny DLC ships, you won't be able to play with them until you grind your way past all the other BS listed above.

Don't buy this game. I regret wasting my money and, 300+ hours of time.

The best part of this game was the Sea Trials / Beta Testing when it was just two teams of ships going head to head.
The minute it went 'live' as an open world MMO it was a rapid downward spiral.

Id love to play the Sea Trials again, but little hope of that.

Do not waste money or time on this rubbish!

i played the game in the closed testing way back when and, been on and off it over the years.
the game is not fast pased, it is a calm game until ♥♥♥♥ hits the fan and the enemy is upon you.
all in all it seems to be in a better state now than before despite allot of controversy about resets and changes.

if you enjoy age of sail and it's feckle nature this is a solid game to pick up.

I don't know what the dev is on but i hope i don't get any dosage of it.

- - - Any DLC bought, you do not have access to it in the game from the get go, you have to actually STILL Grind and spend hours in the game to UNLOCK your PAID DLC - - -

The game feels unpolished, unfinished. There seems to be indicators that you can build and craft but i never really got there or the features seem to have been either removed or never implemented? Like, you are supposed to passively create a resource according to the building info but you simply just cant?

There is no proper trading bar, its hidden in the map menu separately and even then its horribly implemented and complicated to use.

There is no clear path in the game, you hop into a ship, haul cargo and barely manage to find equipment and ammo for your ship in order to engage in pvp / pve.

The grind is absolutely horrible in contrast that you have to spend literal hours in the game in order to advance to a rank to obtain a ship that can barely handle up a fight with a higher tier ranking ship in pve.

PVP Is a hot mess. As a fresh or new player with barely anything to go with rank wise, anyone max rank can just come and wipe you off the board soon as you enter the pvp threshold zone.
You are set to failure if you think you can go out solo without spending months grinding your rank up in the PVE zone to obtain the funds and crew limit increase with your rank ups to use and even manage a proper ship to engage in pvp activities even.

If you are lucky not running into a pack of players where you end up in a 5vs1 or 10vs1.

TLDR

- Lack of proper trading tools
- Lack of proper crafting mechanics and instructions unclear.
- Lack of gameplay loops, the only one you seem to have is sail back and forth rince and repeat the same deal (pve or cargo hauling) Before you can think of handling anything outside the 'safe zone'

- You start of with nothing but a starter ship. No guns no ammo no equipment of anykind. Just a starter ship to start your first haul mission for less than 5 XP points and little less over 7,000 coins (Main game currency)
- it takes an average of 15 to 25 minutes to find a suitable target to attack (PVE) early on and battles last around 15 to 25 minutes.
= with a competent good ship around 20 to 30 minutes of sailing for a battle. With the same 15-25 minute avg. Battle time. If the winds favour your alignment with the hostile ship.

- You can't cross your pvpve / pve server profiles,

Game has, or had? Potential but i can't express how upset i am of what i have seen in the discord with the dev's and their heading with the game and seemingfully ignoring the cries of the majority what's wrong with the game.

I personally don't think the developer has played their own game even at this point.

Now a little self venting from my experiences trying to interact in their discord below.

Appareantly critizing the heading of the game in the discord in a discussion board with the devs on the game get's your messaging deleted if it hurts the dev's feelings.

Asking how the game was around in its first years and during its peak times when there actually was a playerbase higher than 60-120 people. It seem to have been a sinful act and got me removed from the discord, its like i hit a nerve. I was just only curious as i was not here from the start.

I myself like to play in peace and just to look at the ships, but I cannot because for some reason now i need to buy the galleon DLC to play on peacefull and guess what most galleons i see are expensive and I have gotten this game when it was free, but now it is 16 bucks for a game that went from mixed to mostly negative reviews so if you want to pay for a bad game and high prices for DLC items that normally would go for around 10 to 20 bucks. it does look good, but i cannot play a game that has become this bad.

edit: i just found the galleon DLC and its 30 bucks for a ship and a game mode. this is the perfect example of corporate greed.

Я когда пришел в игру в 2015 году, игра была классной, все было здорово и НПЦ и ПВП, ПВЕ миссии, сейчас, я на церберусе крафчу снаряды- стоят пушки, кладу снаряды в корабль, но корабль не стреляет, показывает у вас нет снарядов, в итоге 7 уровень НПЦ убивает церберус 6 ранга за 10 минут, причем 7 ранг НПЦ, "!!!!! разработчики у вас все нормально с головой??? , в просто убиваете игру, лучше откатите игру, либо можете увольняться...

Ignore the haters. The game has some issues, sure, but what game online game doesn't? It's a solid game, the mechanics are pretty much the same as when the game was first launched, there have been improvements and downgrades, which is typical of an MMO, but the consistency of the gameplay and the great visuals make the game worth it in my opinion.

so this is my first review ever on steam, so ill keep it shortish and sweet.

1. game is great for what it is, its a tough grind to start out. However many nice community members and clans to speak to and guide you.

2. price of the game is good for a 10+ year game for the amount of base content and hours of gameplay spent.

3. many reviews on here seem to not grasp that the developer has listened recently, and has implemented most changes to the game by community request listed below:
-) we fixed alt abuse in rvr - clans request by adding leaderboards which solved multiple issues with fake plants by empty alt clans- clan request

-) we added back clan recruitment of low levels - clan requedt

-) we fixed night flip abuse and added a cheat proof timer system. - clan request

-) clans wanted to control who buys the resources - we added ability to lock - clan request

-) wider availability of resources - clan requests

-) rvr and pvp reals for damage - port battle pvp is extremely profitable now - clan request

-) spawn fixes in large battles - clan request

-) charge rebalance - clan request

Many other little things and changes by clan requests

4. this game has a peak player count around 150-400 people through the week, is a niche game.

5. regards to DLC ships many people hate them because you can redeem a free ship every day. however for a more casual person who works 5 days a week, and cant spend all their life on the game make them a great purchase the the more casual player. like myself.

conclusion:
game is very niche, has nice ships, decent sailing experience, has a new solo zone for fighting, spain is very dominant nation, game can use reshade for them super nice pictures, i started playing in 2020 and still play, clans are best way to play with people, overall current best ship sailing game. HAPPY SAILING.

"Naval Action? "Could’ve been great, but it’s a mess.
Naval battles? Cartoon-level stuff—no tension, no thrill. You start with a ridiculous little boat not a ship, a raft and they give you nothing: no crew, no cannons, no materials.
I even bought the DLCs real money and what do I get? Fancy ships I can’t use because 'level too low'. Zero crew, zero guns. Wasted cash.
The tutorial? A joke: teaches you how to turn, then dumps you into crafting—which is everywhere without explaining squat. Either make a proper tutorial with clear steps and goals, or scrap crafting and let me play.
i’ve had it since launch, 45-50 hours down the drain, and i wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. It’s not fun it’s frustrating.

Where I love this game, and I love the grind and the realism, and don't mind the cannonball crafting, this game feels unpolished and unfinished in some ways. The UI still looks temporary, controlling AI ships in combat feels like it has been left in a stage of development where it's good enough while they work on something else, and the "could not find item" error when delivering a quest for cargo on a ship you currently have in your feel, just feels unpolished and rushed. And on top of that, the way my account feels bugged after the reset, where I keep the rank, and the tutorial completion, but at the same time not? The map UI is not designed with the idea of finding something on a map. It remember map setting after entering/exiting ports some times. The default setting for resolutions is horrible, and the need for manual resize every time you launch the game, because it has to be set to the setting size. Every time you have to change some settings, it resets the screen size. UI scaling is set to the minimal, and it's too big to fit anything on a regular screen.

It feels like a game made by people who got passion for naval ships and naval ship combat, but have to experience in UI or UX design, and it's a horrible experience because of it.

Overpriced garbage! Extremely unintuitive Ui and mechanics. It's frustrating to the point that you uninstall in rage. Seeing the price of dlc and ships is also just hilarious :P. This game is not what I bought into years ago unfortunately. Take a good look at the store page to see a few red flags in regards to how the game has changed since the purchase. I am not sure who wrote the new page but it's terrible and that's just the handshake of the game. Gameplay itself has been run into the ground with the game having a heavier grind than any game I've ever played. If the player count was in the hundred or thousands, maybe it could work. Honestly, now I just wish I could get my money back since this game is not what I paid for anymore. It's a shame because I loved this game for years. But it's now just a sham under Naval Action's name.

Well. after a time not playing the game, i came back and find my port empty ... All my ships gone, all my stuff gone, i spent over 700 hours in this game, and everything gone !!

I dont see the point to wipe a server because of updates, and ruin so the hours people invest in this game, basically you play for scraps over and over again.
Devs need to learn that people walk away from such games where things like these happen.

MOSTLY NEGATIVE REVIEWS ARE THERE FOR A REASON SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY...You CANT buy into a good ship here UNLESS YOU GRIND FOR WEEKS. Horrible game that players that have been staying on game swear is really good...spent a full day grinding just to lose about 80k because the game doesn't explain that you need 1st LT in order to EVEN START CRAFTING even then there's no farm to make sure you always have supplies. when you decide you wanna move your base or you accidentally placed your base somewhere there's a NICEEE CHEAP 25k fee to get rid of your buildings that you have to pay when you literally got the POS for free.. you have to go kill ships and even in 3v1 with ai controlled ships, the ships are way more than retarded and either flee or run into each other the whole fight, i had a 3v1 against a ship that was a BR of 15 and i was a BR of 34 with ALL OF MY SHIPS 8 GUNS ON EACH against a sloop with about 10 guns total and the two other ships that were ai controlled that i brought to help ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ flee'd...all together i've lost 4 or 5 free ships and even the 3v1 didn't work and AI was useless and cost me about 3 days and 130k from all the ships i lost ....this is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ waste of a game and time when you cant even learn to shot in a short amount of time to really make the game fun if you're trying to find an old naval shooter just go to The Pirate Caribbean Hunt...its money hackable and easy to play and basically has the same game just little worse graphics and WAYY easier aim if i could give this POS 5 negative stars i 100% would

my first age of sail I've ever played and I like it so far but I think I would love it more if the devs put additional attention to details like the ships crew will speak on their native language of the player's chosen faction or you can view the ship's integrity through x-ray like in warthunder or even showing the ship's history in the description?

or at least put a storyline quest depending on the player's faction like in assassin's creed black flag where you take down ship of an admiral.

and the player's in game are extremely helpful and would give you a ship just to 1v1 you on your first day

It's fundamentally a really good game, it develops skills and has great graphics. Starting as a new player is challenging because there are many items that need attention and you do not know which order to do them or where. Just sail around and sightsee to begin with, join a clan using chat and find out where things are in the beautiful sea world.

Игра интересна, когда вышла. управление кораблём, ветром был потенциал. Что делают разрабы всё это время никто не знает. Всё обновления игры сводятся к... мы урезали урон, мы добавили урон, ветер, скорость, и.т.д. Столько можно придумать в игре а никого там нет, кто занялся бы этим. Если вы новенький то даже не вздумайте покупать, там прям всё сделали что бы в эту игру не играли новые игроки. Даже обучение это мимо. Что бы понимать весь пофигизм к игре просто глянуть на пустые палубы где должен быть экипаж, а ладно бы его там не было. Но он есть просто их человек 8 на весь линейный корабль. Это мелочь но из таких мелочей и едят продукт.

first thing you do when you join is try to do a quest finding that the quest system is made by some intern in high school or something. will waste an hour trying to just find your location on map and quest location then when you mark it no way to figure out how to get there. completely retarded whoever made this game has no common sense to gameplay. game literally looks like its made in notepad.

I used to have a good bit of fun in this game. The economy got jacked up by an "improvement" so I uninstalled it a couple years ago and recently decided to redownload it and try again. So....I have nothing....the repeated wipes will ensure you never get too far ahead. The DLCs used to come with basic cannon....and now I have to buy shot and powder? WTAF!!! This 100% guarantees that no one who starts this game will keep it unless they enjoy repeated and pointless logistics exercises. You DEVS really managed to run this into the ground. Congrats.

Super jeux même si au début c'est très dur de se faire de l'argent et c'est d'ailleurs pour ça qu'il faut rejoindre les clans. Très bonne sensation au combat surtout au PvP. Bref le jeu est recommandé si vous aimez coopérer avec d'autres joueurs.

Supported this game from its Pre-Alpha days. Skip this one, don't invest ANY time into. I made that mistake, hundreds of hours of grinding, getting myself to max level, collecting ships, all gone. Because the devs chose to be greedy, and refused to listen to their community. My profile was deleted with no warning, all that progress lost. All for a useless change. These devs have proven time and again that they are greedy and hate their community. Save yourself the time, don't give them any of your money.

I would like to start off with the positive aspects of Naval Action:
The combat and sailing mechanics feel great. You can choose between many different types of cannons and even some carronades. If I am not mistaken, there are over 60(!) historically accurate modeled ships you can use as a player, each slightly different and unique. The open-world map is large and provides the opportunity to hunt AI War- and Traderships.

Another improvement: Crafting ships has become much easier, so it is possible for casual players to do so. Very nice !

During the last years, multiple features were simply taken away, sometimes even leaving non-working buttons in the game. Players used to be able to start the game, activate a combat mission in port, and then start fighting, more or less immediately. Now, not only have these specific combat missions been removed, but new players also have to grind for HOURS (!!!), only to have the possibility to get enough gunpowder and ammo to fight a single ship. The removal of these combat missions also means that a player is now forced to roam the open world to search fo a target, artificially enhancing the grind by making the player waste time before he or she can even TRY to paly the game and decide if they like it, or not.
Furthermore, the mission rewards have been reduced immensely; you no longer get dubloons and chests, you get a single reward chest that drops a single upgrade, most of the time useless.
Fishing, the only way for a solo player to get the rare woods needed to build the best ships, has been made more annoying, by forcing the player to reactivate it every time something is caught.

The "break up" button is still in the game but no longer works. Nobody knows why, it used to work.

But by far the worst thing that was removed is the way thickness worked.
Back in the day, lower-caliber guns had proportionately less penetrating power than larger calibers, as is historically accurate. This made it possible to build thick ships that could bounce enemy fire if correctly angled. Now, every gun has the same penetration power (except Navy guns, which have even higher penetration) of 160, rendering thickness fully useless. Even with the thickest possible builds, it is only possible to bounce shots at incredibly steep angles.
This change took away a huge amount of combat possibilities and gameplay, which has made this game more boring as a result.

Another problem: Forced Monetisation
Crucial aspects like dock space for your ships and storage space in the warehouses in port have been drastically reduced. While it is possible to grind dubloons to expand both to a certain point, in regard to dock space, it is simply not enough. Fully maxed out, a player gets 10 slots for ships. Keep in mind, there are over 60 ships in this game! There is the possibility to spend about 70€ and buy more dock and warehouse space, which is just immensely overpriced and a total ripoff. Don't forget, these "privileges" used to be available for every player.
The scams: There used to be two shallow water dlc ships; the Hercules and the Pandora. With the release of a new shallow water DLC, both of these LOST their main selling point, their ability to sail in shallow waters. These ships have been nerfed to promote the newly released DLCs, which should serve as a reminder to NOT buy anything from these developers, as the things you spend your hard earned money on will be significantly changend ("enshittyficated") in the future if it helps to sell newer dlcs.

I first downloaded this game nearly ten years ago, in May 2017. I have seen its rise to a great state and, sadly, its fall to the way it is now. It would be great to see this game succeed, but with constant reduction of features and gameplay, further forced monetisation it will die out even more.

Edit: In the last patch notes, a set of "quality of life improvements for new players" was announced. Maybe the developers will now start to implement stuff that actually adds to the game's experience instead of killing it.

After all the test results, it looks like a stable version, very refined and not easy to master. The island landscape is atmospheric at different times of the day. The game isn't fast until you find a pirate hunting you down.

i buyed it and the tutorial didnt work the ship wouldnt work the ai glitched boarding glitched and the constant grind is to much even for people willing to do a grind its that bad the only way for you to enjoy this game is to but a dlc for over 50 to 40 pounds and for it to be your lucky day and the tutorial to work.

the game was already too grindy and the devs made an update to make it even more grindy, combine that with a server wipe and no one understandably wants to play the game anymore.
The few positive review i see looks like ai making me think that the devs themself wrote them to balance the negatives from active players fed up with their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, as the devs are also baning people from the discord that are complaining about the changes... never seen a bigger ♥♥♥♥ show, they're actually trying to kill their already extremely low populated game... good job guys

Ive had the game for awhile and just dont get it. You start with zero cannons and the only mission your offered is to attach merchant ships. They literally have you start in a hole you cant get out of. makes zero sense. Ive resorted to buying a DLC ship that i cant sell once every 24 hrs. again dont have the money for the crew, guns, ammo, anything to even use the ship. if my math is correct Ill basically sell the ship 20-30 days in a row in order to have enough money to leave port in my starter ship. If you arnt a masochist this game isnt for you.

Looking for something to play, jumped back into this game after being gone awhile. Lost all ships due to server wipe. Ok, I used to be pretty good. Got into my free boat and attacked pirate NPC. No canon balls or gunpowder. Ok, give up fight and go to port. Get another free ship, go to buy canon balls and powder. Surprise, no money to buy anything. Lost all my money too. Devs I don't want to do trade runs until I can get enough cash to buy gunpowder and canon balls. Glad I didn't pick up and more DLC before jumping back into this train wreck. Uninstall.

Came back to naval action briefly, a game that was fantastic at one point. I love the naval combat still... But the pure fact that it take over 8 hours from a fresh start to even get the basic resources to fight in ship battles is atrocious.

Remove the cannon balls and gunpowder, or make them even cheaper. DLC ships used to come with cannons equiped, now they do not. Neither does your starter ship.

They need to rename this game to "Naval Inaction" as it FORCES you into trading, and crafting. Killing PVE ships is no longer profitable either soooo good luck there.

At this point "Alt+F4" is your best friend and so is "Uninstall". Don't waste your time on this game, the devs ruined it, and they are so blinded by EGO that they ban you from the discord if you don't like their poorly thought out and implemented changes.
