Scratched that XCOM 2 itch good.
The bloodlines process combined with the Relics is a cool gameplay.

Only cons in my opinion, it's a bit short with a low replayability value: I have only completed the campaign in the basic difficulty, and I have already dealt with enough terrible RNG or pyrrhic victories to want to try it again on higher difficulties (although it could a skill issue...)

The management of dynasties/bloodlines is a great concept. Heroes have to marry, have to train there children, they grow old and die.

There could be more variety in terms of research, buildings and especialy equipment.

The combat system is to weak. Only move and attack.
(Shoot an arrow and then move? That would be too wild and crazy.)
There is also no “reaction”-action or anything similar...

Overall, a mediocre game.

I keep coming back to this game for the challenge it presents. It's not that there are very complicated mechanics, the odds are just stacked against you in such a way that it's nearly a guaranteed loss at the highest difficulty. So being that it's an apocalyptic setting, it not only is difficult, but every step you take is a gamble on another day to come or death to the whole civilization you were building. You can feel the impending doom.

А ключовою особливістю цієї гри є [b]Шлюби та спадщина[/b]: Ви призначаєте героїв Регентами, щоб вони засновували Доми та народжували дітей. Діти успадковують генетичні риси (силу, інтелект) та риси характеру батьків.

Бо без цього неможливо виграти. Життя одного героя це 60, у кращому випадку 80 років. А нам треба протриматися всі 300 років. Щоби пра-пра-…-пра-правнуки домгли нам здобути перемогу у Фінальній битві.

Massive Chalice is such an underrated gem. The bloodline and aging mechanics are unique to the strategy genre and made the game stand out for me. Having one generation of heroes only as caberjacks with the reveler personality trait was hilarious and I love that the game could create such fun random moments like that. It's also not a long playthrough for a first run (I beat the game in less than 20 hours on normal with only 3 reloaded saves). Highly recommend it if you like turn based strategy games.

So, let me say that the game play of Massive Chalice is really fun. I like the X-com-esque style of strategy game, creating family trees of strong heroes was very enjoyable to me. This game is by no means bad and someone else might really enjoy it! I, unfortunately, could not stand the narrators. I found them long-winded, plain, and having a very "standard adventure story" humor. Nothing particularly inspired or interesting with what they say. They over-explain things that I'd already figured out, told jokes that weren't funny, and talked incessantly even when prompts were on the screen that I had to read. Ended up taking my headphones off during their dialogue and, after about 2hrs, gave up completely and got the refund.

I played Massive Chalice close to when it first came out and then replayed it a few years ago. It's a solid strategy game with a balanced team dynamic. The most interesting part is probably the bloodline and the aging of characters. I still haven't seen anything quite like it to this day.

MASSIVE CHALICE is a bit of a love-hate game for me. I will say that I liked it well enough to give it a recommendation in this review, as HUMONGOUS GOBLET has some great things going for it; for example, in most games featuring permadeath, I loathe to lose a unit, which would typically result in me loading a save - but here in GIGANTIC GRAIL, your units (except for maybe the last couple of generations) are going to die whether or not you make a mistake, so I actually found myself just accepting in-combat fatalities more often than not. I also enjoyed how, despite only having three proper classes, LARGE MUG mixes things up just enough by including what are essentially subclasses, in the form of hybrids that have the basic equipment and stats of one class whilst including some of the skills of another in the skill tree.

However, there were also some things I did not appreciate about BIG CUP... but I have run out of acceptable synonyms for a drinking vessel, so I will end this review here.

Its gameplay is derivative, to be sure, but beyond just being Fantasy XCOM, the multigenerational mechanics of this game's noble houses add just enough of a wrinkle to make it feel unique. A sequel or revisit to this series someday would be great, but honestly I would love a version of this where you could populate the pools with your own player-created noble houses rather than being restricted to just the kickstarter backers. A good game for telling yourself stories.

- Básicamente es un juego de [b]gestión de una base[/b] (yo no le llamaría reino), donde tienes varios territorios internos e internos y vas a tener que conseguir mantener el núcleo de esta (mapa central) vivo por [b]300 años[/b].
- El sistema de unidades (que le llaman héroes pero habláremos de esto):
· 12 clases, que en realidad vienen a ser 3 ([b]Cazador, Alquimista y algo así como Ariete[/b]), y las otras 9 son 3 variantes de estas con diferencias pequeñas.
· Los [b]héroes[/b] mueren entre los 50 y 70 años de edad (uso efectivo de 40 de media), o en combate claro. Tienen algo así como [b]genética[/b], que son hablidades de nacimiento principalmente físicas/mentales (miopía, ganar más exp, más fuerza, menos destreza...); y [b]personalidad[/b] que son atributos sociales que desarrollan según crecen.
· Se necesitan para defender, "gestionar fortalezas", acortar investigaciones o entrenar al resto de héroes. Cualquier [b]rol que no sea el de luchar les prohibe ser usados en los combates[/b]
- El [b]mapa[/b] esta compuesto por tu territorio interno (el cáliz) que es una base de investigaciones, y no sé si 12 territorios aprox. Los territorios dan buffs generales si tienes una fortaleza y son los primeros que atacan los enemigos, si consiguen 3 ataques limpios los pierdes.
- [b]Fortalezas[/b]: Lo [b]principal[/b] del juego. Son [b]fábrica de bebés[/b] donde debes poner a dos héroes (que como he dicho ya no van a luchar. Debes buscar que tengan la mayor experiencia posible y que los traits sean favorables. Las [b]clases[/b] también son hereditarias (si se mezclan salen las subclases)
- El combate no tiene ninguna explicación que no se entienda a simple vista. Hay diferentes tipos de enemigos y tus soldados ganan experiencia por kill y por completar la misión. Si matas X número de enemigos a lo largo de las misiones.
Eso vendría siendo un poco en general, no suena mal

[h3]¿Por qué no recomiendo este juego?[/h3]
- El [b]problema principal de este juego es la falta de personalidad[/b]. Las casas, los personajes, el juego... se sienten vacío. Te da exactamente igual quien va a la misión, quien sube, quien pones en una fortaleza. La estética pixel que han hecho no ayuda nada encima. Cuánto más juegas más poco te importan ciertas decisiones. No puedes personalizarlos, las personalidades te dan igual.
- Al final, lo único que haces es darle a play para que avanzan los años y van muriendo héroes, o te nacen bebés mientras esperas un ataque o a hacer la próxima investigación. Salvo que estés en una dificultad más alta (yo he jugado media con iron mode y otra opción que había creo). El concepto no es que no haya más dificultad o no, es que se vuelve monótono.
- Adicionalmente, debe ser que es que les gustaba esta idea desde el principio, porque el trackeo de los héroes que estás usando es inexistente. Ni favoritos, ni prioridad en la lista, ni nada.
- Tu objetivo por lo visto es que todos sean cazadores, o variantes que usen arcos. El ariete es un bicho melee que empuja y recibe menos daños, luego está el alquimista que por lo menos tiene ataques en area con habilidades de veneno o si es atacado devuelve daño. El cazador básicamente pega más que estos dos, a distancia, se puede hacer invisible y disparar un segundo tiro si acierta el primero; y eso es de base.
- Los combates no tienen dificultad alguna ni complejidad real. Y son más una molestia que otra cosa.
- Hay eventos con consecuencias en las que la opción suele ser obvia (no es que cada opción genere ventajas/desventajas, simplemente hay una mala que se ve a leguas).

Esta es mi opinión. No he completado el juego, tampoco tengo la intención de jugar más.
Al que aun así se lo compre y haya leído esto mi recomendación es hacer una partida rápida rusheando para testear toda una run antes de las 2 horas de reembolso.

Honestly, even years after having beat this game, it is still unique enough that I refer to it in game design talks. I feel it took most of what made X-COM Enemy Unknown great and fixed its one of its major shortfalls that it shares with the rest of the genre. In most games like this, if you lose a character (which you crafted and grew) you'd feel the need to reset and try again. If you didn't, your save was basically ruined.

In this, not only is losing characters survivable, it is a necessary part of the mechanics. They age out. You have to manage the team you have with an eye to the future for who will replace them. It's the piece I felt the genre was missing and is the toughest to get right. Getting you to invest enough in a character to make them meaningful, have enough depth for the character growth that you care if you lose them, but still be able to move on when you lose them. It allows your playthrough to truly be a story.

There's just too much shooting you in the foot at every turn. Terrible (as in they affect your kingdom in negative ways) random events that you can't affect meaningfully, hero attrition from every enemy trying to ruin your day (be it by blowing up in your face, doing awful AoEs or deleting your hero's EXP), low birth rates, enemy encounter difficulty climbing way too fast, negative quirk overload, the list just goes on. I really struggle to see how this is supposed to be enjoyable except for those who are really extreme gluttons for punishment. No cover system against ranged attacks alone hurts this game so bloody bad so when you get pierced by a single Bulwark tearing into three of your heroes while your own guys barely get a single shot in that doesn't even deal a third of their HP (you only get one attack per round too) I really wonder who is supposed to find this enjoyable. Stick to the lower difficulties and pretend like there's real strategy involved I guess. It's all just HP trading and the game really seems to hate the possibility of you having any - let alone competent - heroes so do your best to enjoy it while you do, happy for ya if you can but I really don't see how I am supposed to. Been too spoiled by turn based strategy games with more fleshed out and balanced systems maybe so maybe it just aged poorly, what do I know. Just check the date of this review, make your own call and have a shiny day.

El mensaje varia si sos amante o no del genero.

Si no sos amante del genero de estrategia por turnos este juego es perfecto para comenzar, mecanicas de combate sencillas y progresivas, dificultad ajustada perfectamente en cada uno de sus niveles. Super intuitivo y a eso sumale que vas a tener que gestionar todo lo que hagas en tus fortalezas.

Si sos amante del genero estas OBLIGADO a jugar esta joyita que te va a dar muchas horas de entretenimiento, partiendo de la base de que cada decision que tomes puede darte diferentes resultados el juego no te permite explorar todo su potencial en una sola partida. Mi recomendacion es que ignoren el apartado grafico si es eso lo que le preocupa y disfruten de un gameplay que supera por mucho a otros juegos mas conocidos del genero.

Se van a divertir buscando el balance de como tienen que utilizar a sus soldados y tomando la decision de a cual llevar sabiendo que rasgos y personalidades tienen.

I would suggest this game only with a major warning: It's a save scum game. There is no way to just straight win without scumming. Well maybe on normal difficulty it might be doable. I will attempt that next for the iron achievement. Iron on Brutal would be an exercise in futility. Its an okayish xcom type game. I actually got sucked into it's unique family system spanning 300 years. Managing traits, bloodlines, experience gains from one generation to the next as well as leveling your relic weapons from heroes past is the game. The combat becomes secondary to the management. The classes are very basic and not very varied beyond tank, ranged, aoe.

I personally found this game frustratingly challenging. Not challenging in a "huh thats cool" kinda way but in a "i think i'm not gonna play this anymore" kinda way. The movement speed is oppressively slow, the number of unique troop traits is a little too large, enemies can easily decimate you out of nowhere as early as level 2, the event decisions feel universally punishing with no chance for good outcomes, and no indicator good outcomes are even possible. I gave it a solid 2 hours, realized I was having no fun, and refunded it.

Maybe I'll watch a few videos to see if I'm just missing some super key crucial aspect of the game, but coming from someone who LOVES the concept of having noble families + XCOM game play, this game feels like biting down on a rock.

It's got a cool concept, but it's incredibly oppressive on hero management. Ruptures are everywhere so attrition is high in battle, you've gotta fling your very limited heroes off to all the kingdom stuff and each of them are there for good, and they have a chance of just dying really young and needing replacing which further drains your hero stock.

And the babies they make are all one class, so if you want another class, you better hope you've got that specific class to throw into the Keep for the rest of their life.

Summary : the game is fun and relatively addictive. It takes about 15h to beat. 8-8.5/10

Type of game : the gameplay is similar to Fire Emblem games + a management/survival game. You choose what building to build on what region and then you appoint Kings and Queens to make children (your future fighters/heroes ). You also get to choose different types of upgrades and random events occur where you must make choices. There are a few pretty cool items/weapons and abilities that you can choose. Lvl 10 abilities of your heroes are very satisfying for example.

My appreciation of the game : it is easy for me to recommend the game as I had a lot of fun overall. I particularly liked the management aspect of the game, but the combat is solid as well. I didn't care that much about my heroes at first, but I ended up liking the '' pass down that weapon so it becomes stronger on the next hero '' mechanic. Made me enjoy using mainly a few heroes because they became super powerful when using the weapons that could gain levels (these weapons that are passed down can gain levels and become much more powerful basically). For example, 1 dude was able to one shot 3-4 enemies in a row because of his lvl 10 (max level) ability. The ability lets you do another action if you kill a monster basically. Very satisfying.

Complexity of the game is justified : I played on normal at first so I wasn't sure if what seemed like potentially complex planning (the choices you make basically) really had that much impact on the game because the game was pretty easy at first. It turns out that yes, the complexity matters a lot. For example, certain abilities and types of heroes are better than others if you ask me even though it's still a question of play style. Also, levelling up certain heroes makes all the difference in the last third of the game and especially in the last fights.

Weaknesses : 1) combat is repetitive since there aren't that many enemies and the battles are a bit too often a bit lengthy, but you do have multiple types of spells/abilities. 2) Certain technical terms or stats are not explained (what they do exactly isn't clear).

Replayability : yes but that's if you're motivated enough to start a new game. Maybe I will in the future, but I won't for now. Certain achievements do require you to specifically try to get them. Playing on IRON mode or higher difficulty seems interesting if you liked your 1st playthrough.

Notes I had written down before writing my review :

Since you have a good mix of planning/managing your kingdom and combat, you can play easily for 1 hour, maybe 2h without wanting to take a break.

However, I'm not sure if the complexity of the game is justified. In other words, does the apparent complexity actually manage to change your experience significantly? Can you make choices at random and still beat the game relatively easily? I don't know yet after 100 minutes.

It seems like it's not really the case so far even though some of the choices you can make actually make the game more enjoyable (notably choosing between upgrades and types of building).

I don't think I'll test the harder difficulties either, so maybe I'll never know how much your choices matter in this game!

The fights seem a bit too easy so far - it's fine for a casual player like me, but not great for more serious players. I mean that for this game, I prefer playing a bit less seriously though, not for every game out there. I also enjoy hard games and competitive games (Pokémon Stadium games and Dota 2 for example).

Random events can be annoying, but also funny and they add an interesting element of unpredictability.

The music is so good. Combat is a little interesting at first, with each character having abilities that make them very different. There's a weird mechanic in between combat, where it's like a nation building game. I got bored after a while but someone who is really into XCOM and management sims might be really into this.

Massive Chalice is a turn-based strategy game that blends XCOM-style combat with kingdom management and a dynasty system. The kingdom is at war with a mysterious enemy called Cadence, and the player must lead a team of five heroes from different houses to stop them.

The inheritance system is the most interesting feature. A child's abilities depend on their parents, and inherited traits can be both good and bad, adding an element of unpredictability. Characters age, pass down their skills, and eventually die. Children can only be born in castles, but fertility levels vary, so sometimes there are no heirs. In such cases, players can recruit new heroes or adopt children. The game has different classes, and combining parents of different classes can unlock new ones. Random events occur, where the player's choices affect the fate of characters and the kingdom.

Over time, the gameplay can feel repetitive, but the core concept is very interesting. A more modern version of this idea would be great to see.

I've played through this game myriad times, using all difficulty settings, all themes, randomized beginning families, chosen beginning families, all save options, balanced start classes, random start classes... and damn, after 636 hours, I'm still not bored because every playthrough is unique. I wish that Double Fine would make a part 2, but, from what I've read, that will never happen. Which sucks alot, because a sequel could be simply amazing. Improvements, imo, would have to be: create custom bloodlines/quotes/sigils, add relic armor and have options for longer games. I'd like to see the option to choose, 300, 600, 900, 1200, 1500+++ year campaigns, cuz it feels like the game is just getting good, and then the final battle lands in my lap. All in all though, this game is awesome.

I've spent a lot of hours on this game, partially because the fights take forever and partially because I really enjoy the concept and some of the bloodline mechanics. I've made it through brutal difficulty, which is a real challenge. But in the end the game feels like an early access release. There is so much more fleshing out that could be done to the world, so many more interesting traits and bloodlines that could be added. Most of the random events are text based, so it wouldnt even be difficult to add more content. The fights in general could be improved. A new class or 2 could be added to the original 3.

But it doesn't support mods, the developer has abandoned it, and its really difficult to recommend it as is.
Just a lot of wasted potential. Hopefully somebody takes this concept and runs with it, this deserves better than what it is.

I definitely like this game and I go back to it periodically if I haven't played it in a while, but for some reason I never finish a game. I like most of the mechanics, I like the kingdom building aspects, and I like the idea of playing over the course of years with heroes who grow old and die. But something always feels somehow rushed, or perhaps not deep enough in the areas I want to be deep. Making new heroes is fun, combining archetypes to unlock new types is even more fun. I like the narrators for the chalice, I like the artwork. It's basically a game that I like and have always liked but always want to like a bit more. Still, definitely a thumbs-up.

I started off really liking Massive Chalice but slowly lost the appeal.

It's turnbased combat with continuing a lineage of different kingdoms, which sounds cool as hell! But the truth is the combat is fine but there are only three classes with each having 3 or 4 sub classes. Which is fine, but it's not enough to keep it interesting. And building a lineage is interesting at first. But after the first third of the game all you'll be doing is getting pop ups after pop ups about someone died. So you pick a new character. Someone died! pick a new person for the Sagewright (the research speed boost.) Ohhhhh someone died again!! Pick a new character for the Crucible (Training Boost. OHHHHHHHHHHHHH SOMEONE DIED AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Massive Chalice could be great if there was more content or a modding community. But there's not.

I don't recommend playing Massive Chalice. IF you want a good indie turnbased game I suggest Battle Brothers or Wildermyth.

Overall I had fun with it, and would recommend if you like games with tactical combat and inheritance mechanics. As I played this game my thoughts towards it kept changing, so allow me to break down my experience into quarters.
The first quarter of this game is average. Nothing amazing, but still fun enough. It's confusing how exactly I should assign everything and what the smaller details have to do in the bigger picture.
The second quarter I decided that the smaller details don't really matter. I'm ignoring stats and choosing the first option in each list of heroes to assign to different roles. The only choice that does matter is having a good variety of roles on your team.
The third quarter is the peak of the game. Everything feels balanced, I'm strategizing which units will do the most damage, Levels are a good length.
The fourth quarter is where it all goes to hell. I feel overwhelmed in over half the battles, There are even more enemies around the corner when I'm on the brink of death and hoping I'm close to the end, and I have to sit there while my near full health troops get targeted into oblivion.
The final battle is where I lost it. Imagine waiting for the enemy to progress through 30+ turns just to miss three of your 77%+ shots and repeat. All the while the Chalice is berating you with the same voice lines about how are you not paying attention to what's going on. Did I mention enemies keep spawning in on top of that with no indication of when the fight will end
There's also a mechanic to refill flasks, because I guess it was decided that you needed more flasks to stand a chance in this fight. Too bad there's half a dozen enemies in range that can reset the refill cooldown by shooting you. The cooldown is seven turns. Another final fight mechanic is the ability to bring back old fighters, but this isn't mentioned until your first troop dies. So I spent 2 turns desperately trying to move an injured person with no health items to in range of another that could heal them. 2 turns I used 2 out of my 5 available actions on healing one guy. The final fight made this a miserable experience and I have no intention of returning to this game.

this game is great. I had it on xbox gold long ago, I respect this one almost as much as xcom two. Its got a good meta side to it, with the family bloodlines, and the combat and weapons are interesting and don't feel like copies of every other game like this. the character design visually is unique and the combat isn't tedious. Love the sarcasm and lippiness sometimes of the background narrators.

A great little thing of a game. It has X-COM's turn-based grid-combat but simplified. The combat works fine and is a lot of fun.
For me, the core of the game is the century-spanning "Realm-Management". You build keeps that house your bloodlines which produce new heroes. In contrast to X-COM your Heroes will not be present for the whole game, since humans only live so long. That means you might be fighting a battle with one of your heroes but in the next he will be dead and you might have recruited his daughter that carries her father's relic-weapon into the next battle.
You can mess up a bit without knowing. I did not think too hard about the early years and lost the ability to train new caberjacks, one of the hero classes that is mostly a tanky melee fighter. So I fought the game mostly with alchemists and hunters and their expanded classes since I was unable to get these caberjacks back into the bloodlines.
Nonetheless, the 12 hrs on normal difficulty were a blast. In the end quite literally.

The game does have good points, but mainly the implementation makes it weird/bothersome to play the game. There is lots of lists of characters with random names/family crests and no way to tag/organize them, so a lot of times you just lose the character you were waiting to fill some specific position, and those assignments are really important because all of them can just be replaced by death that can take a long time. Also given that the points where you can make decisions are far apart it feels like the game does not give enough tools to make it enjoyable to play.
The second part of the game are the tactical battles, those are kinda ok. There is some strange choices about keybindings and the camera control, not really sure if wasd + rotation is necessary, making rotations on the environment don't really add a lot to the gameplay. Some maps are a little confusing in that you can't easily see where paths or accessible parts are, like some corridors with junk blocking the way that look like could be destroyed because there is other destructible obstacles in the middle of the map. It seems like battles are more busy work positioning units than strategic combat.

Writing this review just helped me to realize that I dont want to play it anymore, so I would say that it is a game that maybe be worth playing but there are lots of cumbersome details.

I'm going to say "yes" to this one, but it's a cautious yes. It's definitely not a casual play, though the amount of times you'll not make it to the end or give up and start over is casual-adjacent type gameplay. The concept is excellent but (as it's been said to death) the difficulty level is excruciating and there are no built-in Quality of Life/good faith safeguards to prevent you from getting completely and utterly railroaded beyond your ability.

Don't get me wrong. That doesn't mean that I think the game should hold your hand and bring out the kid gloves to coddle you through the experience...but if it happens to be a regular occurrence in Normal mode that all your heroes get murdered before you can even get to the 60 or 70-year mark, or if all your marriages only produce female babies, or if you routinely have to go into full battle against 12+ creatures with a partial team (often times, these creatures have double or triple your HP), or any number of other weirdly annoying things that I could list here you just kinda become numb to the whole thing.

You get so used to getting shafted raw that you start to make it more of a "let's see if we can at least get 40 minutes of playtime" challenge. Losing and getting lambasted continuously and relentlessly doesn't even become a frustration anymore. It truly is a genuine shame because the fun dies really fast but it'll still call you back every now and then...somehow, some way...

The game has been out long enough at this point and it's been stated so often that you'd think that if the developers cared about the enjoyment factor for their playerbase that they would've done something about the balancing factor by now, but nope. It would actually probably be more fun and exponentially more fair if they converted it to real-time action, instead of turn-based...since, realistically, how actually prefers turn-based combat over real-time combat anyway? (short of those that might have physical disabilities/limitations that makes real-time gaming nearly impossible for them due to the accessibility and speed).

Anyway, I guess the TL;DR: would be, just to restate: Excellent concept for a game and it's worth attempting on that basis alone, but get it on a heavy HEAVY discount from your favorite third-party key site (like, Humble, Green Man Gaming, Fanactical, whichever you prefer and where you can find it). Overall a pretty good game. Would recommend to people who like turn-base, combat strategy games.

I was looking for a game like 'Advance Wars", or "Valkyria Chronicles", and I think this game was a good best of both world of those two type of games I like. There a few mechanics that this game offer, that I've never dealt with before, and a few things I felt they missed out on. But I did enjoy everything the game offered.

This is a hard game to review. Parts of it really clicked with me, yet there are aspects that are really grating and after finishing the game once, on normal difficulty I might add, I really have no real wish to go back to it for another go.. So let's dive into what in the end will be a weak recommendation based on the following facts.

The game takes place in a kingdom on the brink of disaster where a bunch of noble houses are battling an unrelenting scourge known simply as the Cadance. As a guide and guardian stand a, well, massive chalice that contains two distinct personalities that acts as what can only be interpreted as a demigod to the embattled population, aiding them in cleansing the infectious rot spread by the Cadance. So the game is basically two parts. One rudimentary kingdom manager where you expand your keeps, build upgrades and research new technologies as well as manage the kingdom's genealogy (i.e. who marries who..). The second part is where you send out your population in X-com-style skirmishes fighting the manifestations of the Cadance.

First of all, the upsides. There is a genuinely intriguing metagame here in the kingdom manager where you are basically playing a lowkey genetics game. What traits and personalities will spread through the population and how do you minimize the destructive traits in order to breed the most fit population. I quickly realized that there were no real mechanics for inbreeding that took me in a really dark direction with only one dominant house left, but then again, whatever works right? There is a simple brilliance to this tug of war style of tactical combat on the worldmap where cadance pops up and you need to choose your battles wisely to not lose territories to an enemy focused on attrition.

The breeding also defines what classes you can get, and basically there are 9 classes in total, but I only ever used like 5 of them, and honestly there is not much that differentiate them other than a few unique skills and what weapon and armor they use. The tactical combat began quite interesting but got stale quite fast. The enemies spawn in groups of three different types on maps that are limited in number, so you learn the lay of the lands quite quickly. After a while it was just thrown in your best fighters at the moment, classes became pointless and honestly the stealth archers proved to be beasts either way as soon as I got some tech rolling.

This is an interesting game, I will give it that, and I played it for around 20 hours to finish the campaign. The story began quite intriguing but in the end it felt like it lacked in its delivery. The Massive Chalice is an intriguing centerpiece but we never even delved into its origin or why the people came to gather round it in the first place. In the end I was just moving dudes on a map to battle an enemy that might as well be the indigenous people of the planet I had invaded..

In the end I will give it a weak recommendation. Pick it up on a sale if you want to experience a really interesting mix of lightweight X-Com skirmishes with a punnett-square puzzle that would make Mendel proud.. Double Fine continues to be extremely uneven in its output..

I would recommend to play on hard difficulty for a challenge. Normal was a bit too easy in the mid and end game.

I also would have liked some bosses or special elite mobs for more variety.

So especially since you can get it rather cheap you could give it a try if you would like to start breeding your heroes (sadly no funny GoT incest)

I'm surprised more games don't take advantage of time like this game does, shaping the different houses, replacing heroes as they age out, and making sure that you always have a steady supply of capable troops add a very interesting layer of strategy to the over-world.
Planning a strategy that will let you survive a few hundred years is quite the challenge.

The top review as of this posting put what I feel into a sentence: After about 100 years, it all becomes repetitive. But it takes some time and tactics to get through the first 100 years which is quite fun.

The basic premise of the game is it's a squad-based tactics game in the same vein as X-COM, but instead you're in a fantasy universe. The other part that makes it unique is you're an immortal being overwatching a kingdom as people are born and grow up into their various roles and die, and you get to appoint your warriors into various roles that influence your future warriors.

I beat it on my first play through just by listening to the tutorial on a normal game, so that's a good feature too -- they understood their own mechanics well enough to explain them to you and it worked out as a victory. But then I settled into a pattern and then it becomes a little repetitive for the journey to end-game: strategically I found a niche that simply worked and doubling down on that strategy worked very well to basically coast to end-game at just over 11 hours.

So it scratched the itch for a new squad-based game, and it has some interesting mechanics, and it's good enough to recommend -- but there's a bit of repetition at end-game.

i've had this game for AGES. i've never actually beaten the damn thing, but it's very fun to pick up every once in a while and make a few bloodlines to obliterate. most of my game time is offline, so the silly 44 hours is a tad bit inaccurate unfortunately.

the chalice itself is a very fun guide in the game, i adore the little remarks throughout my gameplay <3
