A PvP-focused extraction shooter set on the mysterious planet of Tau Ceti IV, Marathon will see players inhabit the bodies of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries who have been designed to survive the planet’s harsh environments and explore the lost colony that once inhabited Tau Ceti’s surface. Marathon überzeugt mit einer insgesamt sehr großen Qualität und bleibt nachhaltig im Kopf. Zwar braucht es anfangs etwas Zeit, um sich im nicht ganz übersichtlichen Menü zurechtzufinden, die Items kennenzulernen etc., doch sobald man tiefer eintaucht, entfaltet sich der volle Reiz des Spiels. Und so lange dauert das auch nicht, aber es klickt vllt. auch nicht schon nach 10 Minuten.

Besonders hervorzuheben ist die spannende Lore, die sich mit jeder Quest weiter ausbreitet und für durchgehende Motivation sorgt – endlich ein Extraction-Shooter mit echter erzählerischer Tiefe. Die dichte, intensive Atmosphäre zieht einen schnell in ihren Bann, auch wenn der Art Style sicherlich Geschmackssache ist.

Das Gunplay ist, wie man es von Bungie kennt, hervorragend umgesetzt: Kämpfe fühlen sich präzise, dynamisch und einfach rund an. Insgesamt greifen alle Systeme sehr gut ineinander und sorgen für ein durchdachtes, fesselndes Spielerlebnis.

Really fun. Enjoy the core gameplay loop a lot. Hopefully the population doesn't die out in the near future, but I fear that it may.

Would have loved to have seen a single player campaign, but I think that Bungie is past making those. The way they are telling the story is still interesting, and there is a charm to playing story missions in a public, hostile server.

If Bungie ever added a slayer type mode, I would eat that up. They won't though.

This is a very good return to form for Bungie. Go look at my Destiny 2 review if you want to know how I feel about that company, however, they've redeemed themselves with this one. Despite the online hate campaign fueled by "concord 3" memes and the like, Marathon is a good game. The gameplay loop is, well, fun; it's an extraction shooter with weirdly enough, roguelike elements.
You go into a run, die, lose your gear, free kit up, die a few more times, keep trying, kill some people, get good gear, then die right before extract. Then you do it all again and win. And then again, etc. The gunplay is fantastic and personally I like the artstyle a lot. PvE enemies feel like a challenge or something to be avoided, the PvP and short TTK keeps you on edge constantly, and allows for unexpected wins when in a 1v3 scenario (Rook gameplay). That said, no game is perfect. People have been ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on the UI of this game since it came out, and I can see why. At first it's very different from what we're used to in a lot of modern games, is visually striking and a lot of icons for items tend to blend together (especially weapon mods). After a few hours you get used to it, once you do you can navigate through menus incredibly fast and it feels a lot more ingenuitive. I've not experienced many other issues with the game, other than trolls online telling me it sucks. Plus, the music is sick and the whole ARG thing was cool to watch. Overall an 7/10 from me, its early days so more content will improve the progression of the game, random bug fixes, etc. I cannot believe I'm saying this but good stuff Bungie.

I don't even play extraction shooters but this game just looks so cool and its cyberpunk/sci-fi lore is just too irresistible... if you suck at shooters just get some nice folks to carry you or otherwise grind easy contracts and stay away from Cryo Archive, instead bury yourself in Codex reading lore :)

As a veteran of extraction shooters, I have to say this is simply done right.

I’ve always been a fan of Hunt: Showdown, but I was looking for something new, competitive, PvP-focused, and with a fresh, unique setting. Marathon delivers exactly that.

This is a pure skill-based PvP experience. The gunplay is honestly a work of art—tight, responsive, and extremely satisfying. The overall design and artistic direction are outstanding. It might not be for everyone stylistically, but you can clearly see the level of craftsmanship. It deserves recognition.

You can feel Bungie’s attention to detail everywhere. The maps are cleverly designed, with smart movement routes and those classic “shortcuts” that reward players who learn them—letting you rotate faster or outplay opponents. Everything feels intentional.

Compared to Hunt, which is more punishing and often one-shot focused, the balancing here (closer to Apex Legends with health and shields) feels spot on. It creates more dynamic fights and rewards mechanical skill without being frustrating.

Highly recommended if you’re looking for a competitive PvP shooter with extraction elements, great gunplay, and constant adrenaline.

This game has a big learning curve, and not because of gameplay. If you've played apex, if you've played other extraction shooters, it works very similar to those in practice. Nothing about the operators is overly complex. The graphics are very cool and unique, and the game runs incredibly smooth.

Where the learning curve is is in the menus. 12 hours in and i'm just now understanding how it all works. Despite that, I find myself coming back for more and more. I love it, it's awesome. A solid game with unique graphics and sound design.

The comparison between this and arc raiders is funny, both great games, but they are VERY different. I something totally different out of this game compared to arc. Both are well worth the $40.

Unfortunately another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ extraction game. I was hoping this was gonna be like Halo but its more like CoD. TTK is so low. Camping is by far the most rewarded playstyle. Ew. Whoever camps harder wins. Camp hard so you can landmine the person exploring walking past you. Try playing solos if you hate yourself. Solos in ranked is absolutely unplayable. Even if you try to avoid all PvP (since its your only option in ranked) you'll still get camped by a team 3v1 as you try to exfil. If you actually try to fight solo in ranked, by the time you down their second guy, the first one you eliminated is already ressed again. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Unplayable.

遊戲是好玩的，三圖哨站設計的很好，讓我夢回牢塔打實驗室的快樂時光。
解鎖到最大倉庫，空間還是很緊張，很難騰出多餘空間存核心搞BD。UI跟美術風格屬於大紅大綠色彩鮮明的風格，一開始不太喜歡，後面也慢慢適應了。戰鬥的爽度補足了缺點。
不過我最希望我的朋友能多愛這個遊戲一點，3排缺1人要配路人還是很難受的。

This game was designed to be ultra-competitive, pander to people who have more time on their hands than they should, and is not casual friendly at all. In my 100+ hours of ***trying*** to enjoy this game as someone with a life outside of it and mediocre FPS skills, it has been nothing but frustration and disappointment with small highs in between that barely managed to keep me going. They aren't working anymore.

This game clearly doesn't want me here, so I'm not going to invest any more energy into it.

I went into this game like a lot of people, burned by Bungie's treatment of Destiny, by the oversaturation of the shooter market, and not really liking extraction shooters all that much, aside from loving Tarkov. That being said, this game kinda brings back a lot of the fun I had from learning Tarkov, the challenge of the PvE enemies being absolutely no slouch, the maps all being very different and having varying levels of challenge, and of course, the elephant in the room, (in my opinion) the game's amazing sense of art direction aside from a some of it being unfortunately stolen or potentially AI generated. (gross!) I know the game undersold and it's likely that it will probably be considered a failure, I really hope Bungie can turn this game around because what we have right now is pretty solid! If they can keep it from becoming a microtransaction DLC hellscape like Destiny or at least make the content feel like it's worth it, I am very excited to see what this game becomes.

I'm not usually into extraction shooters or any sort of PvPvE, but Marathon somehow captivated me. First, I fell in love with the art style, which is one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever seen. It completely warped my perception of other art forms—now most other games seem bland and unimaginative by comparison.
After enchanting my eyesight, Marathon proceeded to charm my hearing. Even if you don't like the game, you’ve got to admit the music is sick as hell. Tracks like “Rhythm of Writhing Constellations” and “Code Race” haunt my dreams, and the whole soundtrack maintains that level of quality. Ryan Lott absolutely killed it.
As I said before, extraction shooters are not my cup of tea, but Marathon somehow manages to create this intoxicating thrill of high‑stakes shootouts and tense sneaking around as you try to outmaneuver your opposition. Despite not being a stealth game per se, it has some of the most exciting stealth moments I’ve ever experienced. You’re constantly on the edge of your seat, listening for the footsteps of other Runners. Until now, sneaking in games for me meant fooling AI opponents, but Marathon requires you to hide in a more “natural” way to fool human rivals. Use cover, move carefully, don’t let your sound give you away.
Every shot matters. Every gunfight can reveal your position, and often it’s better to sit and wait while others duke it out, only to swoop in at the last moment and finish off the last one standing. Other times, it’s smarter to let an enemy pass you by, even when you have the drop on them. Marathon is full of these organic moments. Bungie managed to create a unique playground that enables them to happen almost every run.
Since every run is such a huge risk for your loadout, you have to plan carefully—what to take with you, what your goals are, and how much you’re willing to gamble. You can work on a priority contract that offers unique objectives and pushes the story forward for each faction. You can take a generic contract that earns you money, loot, and XP with a chosen faction. Or, if money is tight and you’ve gambled away your good equipment, you can venture out with Rook, a unique Runner Shell that plays like a wild card. He gets dropped into the middle of the match with predefined equipment—meaning he costs you nothing to run. You can’t complete contracts with him, but you can use him to turn your fortunes around and gear up your other shells for those big, challenging contracts.
There are countless little design decisions that make this a truly unique experience—too many for me to name. For some, Marathon is too obscure in its design, doesn’t explain things well enough, and throws the player into deep water right away. For others, that’s exactly what makes it such a thrill: discovering each tiny mechanic, finding your own way to play, understanding the risks and the loot economy. Perhaps it’s not a game for everyone, but it’s definitely a game for me, despite my apprehension toward the genre.

Having 90 hours in Marathon, I genuinely can’t recommend this to anyone, competitive or casual. It’s just not in a good state.

The gun balance is completely cooked. Shotguns dominate everything to the point where if you’re not running one, you’re basically throwing. It kills any sense of build variety or strategy. Every fight feels the same and it gets old fast.

Then there’s the visual design decisions, which are honestly baffling. The bloom they use as an environmental effect is ridiculous. You’ll be staring at what is basically a blinding yellow screen while somehow your opponent has perfect visibility and deletes you. It doesn’t feel like skill, it feels like you got screwed by the game.

Overall it’s just a mess. Nothing feels tuned properly, fights feel cheap, and there’s way too much randomness in situations that should be skill-based. I gave it a real shot and put the time in, but this is one of those games where the more you play, the worse it feels.

Marathon is an extraction shooter, a bit on the slower side when it comes to pacing. Wish there was more life to the maps, like NPC wise.

The thing that makes this game unique is definitely the abstract art and sound design, a Bungie staple. Think of Mirrors edge but as a shooter.

If you like Darksouls universe, then you’d like this surreal universe. Makes you feel small, a tiny residue left from the power vacuums and conflict in a world left behind. Lore is decrypted slowly through codex progression.

Fun, not too bad for the price.

Kein Spiel für Offensive. Sobald die KI in Gruppen auftaucht sollte man lieber die Beine in die Hand nehmen.
Und dann sind da noch die anderen Runner die nur darauf warten das du Lärm machst und mit der Ki beschäftigt bist.
Der Art-style trifft genau mein Geschmack und die Soundeffekte sind erste klasse allgemein wirkt das ganze Spiel wie ein Kunstwerk.
Ich bin sehr zufrieden und weis das Sci-fi Spiele es in Mainstream nicht immer leicht haben aber es sollte jeder Extraction-Shooter Spieler zumindest mal anzocken.

I never had any interest in extraction shooters. I was disappointed Bungie was bringing back Marathon as one and had doubts that it would be anything other than a live service cash grab.

I am happy to say that I was dead wrong.
Bungie continues to prove that they absolutely know what they're doing when it comes to making shooting feel smooth in a first person shooter.

Marathon is visually stunning with a fresh art direction that makes everything in game feel purposeful and alive. Despite Tau Ceti IV acting as nothing more than a corporate-sponsored colosseum, each run through the landscape gives a glimpse into the daily operations at the facilities.

Dying never really feels bad. I know if my team and I are uncoordinated, then we are probably going to get our ♥♥♥♥ rocked. Sometimes you get mowed down with a shotgun from around a corner, or from a sniper half the map away, but even in those situations I recognize that I was outgunned or outplayed.

At a glance, the runner shells are reminiscent of the characters from a hero shooter.
In reality they are toolboxes to enable a variety of playstyles centered around positioning, combat, and gaining information.

I played the server slam the week before Marathon officially launched, and as much as I enjoyed it I was still hesitant. A friend let me try it on their dime and I'm about to hit 60 hours.
Like most things, this will be better with friends, so get some buds together, give it a try, and if you don't see yourself enjoying the loop of "Live, Die, Repeat" then the worst that happens is you refund it.

I'm addicted to Marathon. It's not a perfect game, it's not an easy game, but for those who invest in it, learn it's nuances, it's an incredibly rewarding game. I'm not an extraction shooter fan historically, but Bungie's blend of polish, tight mechanics and weird lore have struck a chord with me. Loving the aesthetic also goes a long way to appreciating the game. I imagine the game will continue to be divisive. For those that click with it though, damn it's a helluva rush.

It immediately hooked me with its intriguing lore (what happend to this colony?!), excellent cinematics / artwork, and superb gunplay.

Initial learning curve is tough (hopefully Bungie can ease this a bit more), but get through it and I swear something will eventually just 'click' and you will find yourself wanting to keep dropping on to Tau Ceti IV.

As a 100% solo player who has had trouble getting into extraction shooters in the past, I've been having a great time with it. Very tense and immersive, but not too stressful as you can progress most quests (at least that I've come across) without actually having to successfully exfil. Highly recommend anyone on the fence about it to give it a try!

Engaging story, distinct visual style makes it feel as if you are actually in a Sci-Fi novel / universe. I hope to see more maps in the Future and perhaps a coordinated style of play (No PvP or Larger Teams). Sad that there is no specific armor slot customizations!

ESCAPE WILL GET ME GOOP

Super fun pretty challenging but has a lot of features to make things less painful than any other PvP focused extraction shooter. Very recommended if you like primarily fighting & getting geared.

Der aktuell beste Evac-Shooter mit hoher Einstiegshürde und steiler Lernkurve. Man sollte sich nicht vom Art-Style abschrecken lassen, dieser macht zum einen absolut Sinn sobald man in die Lore eintaucht und ist in der Menge von "immer gleichen Shootern" eine willkommene Abwechslung.
Das Spiel ist knackig, manchmal echt hart, aber nie unfair. Das Balancing macht einen sehr guten und durchdachten Eindruck. Besonders herausragend ist die Performance des Spiels auf Server- wie auch Client-Seite im Vergleich zu anderen aktuellen Shootern. Ebenso wie das flüssige Movement und das direkte Aiming, welches die Erwartungen jedes Shooter-Fans mehr als zufriedenstellen dürfte.
Als negativ empfinde ich die Tatsache, dass man auf dem PC Crossplay nicht deaktivieren kann und dass die Mouse-Steuerung in den Menüs etwas direkter sein könnte (zum Beispiel könnten Einblendungen beim Mouseover schneller erscheinen).

i was a hater at first lol there was somthing off about the server slam i swear ahaha. but after a week or so of me stalking other people play and honestly just getting too bored of Arc raiders i gave in and pick it up. My God this game is incredible. improved on so many things that Arc is seriosuly lacking on (Anti cheat , reviving fully dead players, actual story and lore , contracts, factions etc etc list too long). im addicted. Thanks Bungoo for another banger. GGs.

Marathon has a very interesting visual style and an engaging story — the atmosphere and overall design really stand out.
I LOVE IT-->But

There are also some potential performance issues that can affect the experience.

However, the main reason for the negative review is the lack of Linux support. In 2026, ignoring part of the audience is a strange decision, especially for a multiplatform project already released on Windows, PS5, and Xbox.

One of the worst games I have ever played if you want to get one shot by a knife in an extraction shooter be my guest. Game is hot ♥♥♥♥ game will be shut down. Devs are fat controller using dweebs don't get me started on the aim assist shut bungie down now. Worthless studio with soulless soon to be unemployed overweight blue haired devs. Sony shut these lunatics down give them no severance strip everything from the creatures that decided to make this game.

Played first mission -> ran out of ammo and heals against npcs -> cannot figure out what the objective is -> dies to npc because knife does not require ammo. wish i bought on steam so i could refund it.

At 23 hours in playing solo, I feel I can write a reasonable review of this game. I've no previous experience playing extraction shooters or the Marathon series. I understand that the original game had a great deal of interesting lore, which was delivered via green text terminals, but that's about the extent of my exposure to it. I've obviously played Halo, so I'm somewhat familiar with the Bungie combat loop.

Marathon is an utterly unique game, unlike anything I have played before. It's often unfair, and at times absolutely brutal. You'll die to the UESC; You'll get murked by players; You'll die in the extraction zone; You'll shout and swear; And yet, I've never felt that a run was ever truly pointless: The maps reward knowledge and clever positioning, you'll learn the most silent routes, the likely paths other players will approach you on, and even approximately where players will be given the current match time. You'll become faster, quieter and more efficient in combat. You'll begin to prioritize loot and certain events. You'll learn the combat loop and the strengths and weaknesses of the different shells and weapons. The game is very fluid, the gunplay feels great, I've never experienced anything that could even approximately be called latency. The framerate is buttery smooth at all times. The builds work well and are interesting to design, and the character progression generally feels very good indeed.

Behind the combat loop and expertly designed maps, is a gripping world and story. As you shift from simply surviving missions and coming away with something, anything, you'll begin to get engaged with the mystery of Tau Ceti IV. This is where Marathon really shines and comes into its own. Don't get me wrong, I love being a solo murder hobo with Destroyer, but the moment you start filling out those priority contracts, you become engaged with the game in a way that's difficult to describe. The game convinces you that beyond just extracting with loot, your ACTUAL purpose is to figure out what the hell happened down there. You start putting together builds not to kill other players (although that's a necessity), but to survive the game world so that you can finish another mission - progress the story, unlock the codex.

There's something else too, a feeling I've not felt since first playing DooM on a null modem, Quake, Half-Life, that last LAN party that I didn't know at the time would never happen again. It's a feeling of euphoria, like I'm a teenager again uncovering something new and groundbreaking. I've played Marathon a couple of hours most nights for the past few weeks, and I've not once come away feeling dejected, or that my night was wasted. I've played a lot of multiplayer games - Warcraft, Conan, Elite: Dangerous, Mechwarrior Online, Sea of Thieves, to name a few. At the end of every session, I've always felt either angry, or that I didn't want to stop playing. Never satisfied.

Marathon scratches that itch man, it throws me back to my childhood like I never even left. 25 years since that last LAN party with my schoolmates, and it feels like more than anything, when I play Marathon I'm coming home.

这游戏如果我只玩了开服那段时间，我可能会5星好评，真的上头，但是玩了一段时间下来，很多设计上的弊端就暴露出来，特别是低温档案室一出，就完全暴露了这游戏为什么越来越少人玩。

1. 这游戏的紫色金色资源不像别的游戏靠运气好就能出货，而是指定的地方必出货，只是可能出的货不同，那么就导致如果你枪法不够硬你根本不配进这些必出货的地区，然而局外升级需要大量的紫色材料和金色材料，你不去这些必出高资源的地区争抢，你是肯定不够升级的，但是你的枪法和团队配合真的够去和pro哥还有挂车争夺吗？

2. 也有不需要靠技术就能出货的地方，也就是钥匙房，但是钥匙卡又分等级,蓝钥匙卡资源不咋地，紫和金钥匙卡又难获得，但是你吃了资源真的带的出去吗？就拿沼泽举例，两个距离最远的地区大概在700~800米左右，而你开启撤离点会让整个地图的人知道你开启撤离了，别的队伍发现你开启撤离点就算距离你300米左右，都能跑过来在你撤离之前把你歼灭，这是什么概念，也就是快半个地图的距离都能跑过来把你团灭了让你撤离失败，撤离点很多，但是你能撤离吗？

3. 这游戏就是纯纯的旱的旱死,涝的涝死，pro哥和挂哥紫色和金色材料多的要命，甚至紫色材料同一种多达上百个都懒得捡了。而普通玩家可能一个金材料也没拿到过，紫色材料也就个位数而已，还不够升级用。

4.低温档案室更是我见过最恶心的设计，一个养蛊式的地图，必须去找人杀才能确保能够撤离，虽然紫色金色材料这里面非常多，但是这养蛊式的地图设计只有蛊王才能撤出来，要么你就躲着吃点垃圾混到3级再偷偷撤离，还有所谓的pve boss，你pve的前提你必须是个pvp大手子，因为你必须得把其他队伍都清了才能去pve。

5.普通玩家体验越来越差，棒鸡是不是觉得玩他游戏的都是pvp大神？命运2里面搞个试炼灯塔，已经够恶心了，但是不影响不打试炼的，而这个游戏，是影响所有的普通玩家，开服前期大家装备都不怎么好所以没有体现出来，现在pro哥和挂哥紫装备热成像大狙多的要命，全跑来没有什么资源的新手图来虐杀普通玩家可太有意思了，我很好奇这游戏的设计者真的玩吗？别的竞技游戏都是尽量匹配技术差不多的，虽然不是100%公平，但是也不会把把被炸，但是这游戏不一样，纯瞎匹配，新手图里面吊资源没有，但是就是有很多人起满装备来虐杀做任务的新手。

6.3个月删一次档，一开始以为是为了让老登清空仓库，可以和新手同一个起跑线，实际就是纯纯的扯淡，这游戏任务难做的一批，升级要的材料也是非常逆天，pro哥和挂哥升级飞快，而你普通玩家可能3个月还没升满又给你清空了，又要重新搞，可太照顾普通玩家了，我敢打赌，这游戏第一次删档就是凉了的时候。

7.现在普通玩家做个任务都做不了，一个任务要一次性从地图最左边跑到最右边，再跑到最左边，这来来回回穿梭整个地图，你猜会被热成像杀几次，而且还得一次性做完，死了又要重新做。
