Some people may like this but, I found the game play to be boring and dull. If you're looking for strategic military gameplay, try somewhere else.
Played this years ago and doubt I'd get into it today. However, if you're up for a WWII simulator that felt pretty unique back in the 2000s, this might be worth it on sale.

Il reste cependant assez peu ergonomique a saisir mais une fois le cap franchi des graphismes tres dates , le jeu est incroyablement prenant ! C est l un des rares que je connais qui propose une vue mondiale (et oui , meme les colonies comptent!) et de l affrontement economico-militaire complet !

This is a little gem worth playing, especially when you like the more reduced strategic games without a hard learning curve. It´s an older game and not one of the more complex, harder to learn games.
The historical campaigns are nice to play, but you can also play an endless game opening interesting options:
Play democratic Germany not starting WW2 at all, try to get the A-bomb in 1942, build big fleets of ICBMs to pulverise all enemies cities before they can become a threat or just join the fray on side of one of WW2s protagonists (or not) while sneakingly becoming a super power yourself and conquer the world with your Romanian Empire in the 1960ies...
You also will learn a bit about worlds geography, some names from the different cities and regions will stick, too. If in a sale and you like the genre, get it!

"Making History: The Calm & the Storm" is an ancient game from 2007. It's a whopping 17 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or 16:9 widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware.
This is a somewhat simplistic turn based strategy game where you control various world powers and battle for world domination, building your armies and choosing your fights carefully. There's hundreds of games like it, so of course to recommend this over the competition, it must be exceptional, and it's not.
The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the display resolution caps out at 1200p (and there's no support for any 16:9 resolutions, not even 1080p!!!!). The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers.
The game is very badly optimised, with low framerates and janky gameplay even on a high end rig, probably just because it's using dated engine components/middleware that needs to be modernised, but the devs refuse, instead wanting money for an abandoned, unmaintained game. Developers must take the time and polish their games and ensure they are optimised and will play well on any potential customers system.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
"Making History: The Calm & the Storm" is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $4 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.

Game is solid but I don't consider it that realistic. Since I read a lot of history and am an Engineer I really fail to understand how ceratin things work here. I am talking about economy and resources.
Diplomacy here is also very weird. The game fails to take into account splitting territory that 2 different nations attack. The game also doesn't allow building up industry on allied or conquered territory.
There are a lot of issues that I noticed but if you turn off that side of your brain the game is, as I've stated, good.
So based on its price I can't give it a negative review. It works fine and can be fun. Also it has mod support.

Un énième jeu de stratégie complexe autour du XXème siècle, a mal vieillit : graphismes moches, trop de choses à faire et à gérer ce qui fait qu'on perd beaucoup de temps pour faire pas grand choses, parties très longues etc...
C'est moche, incompréhensible et même si vous avez les meilleurs armées sur le papier, tout vos tank lourds vont se faire détruire par un mec d'infanterie basique parce que la rng a décidé que hey, c'est comme ça.On passe 20000 tours a tout planifier et on perd tout parce que sans raison les nazis attaquent, et malgré le fait que sur le papier mon armée vaut 1500 points et la leurs 40, je perd sans raison en un millième de seconde.Frustrant/20

Bought this game ages ago. Recently booted it up. I forgot how addictive is to keep ending turn. It's a bit simplistic compared to current strategy games. But I think it was still pretty good for it's time. And can still be fun even now.

Played a lot when i was younger but i do remember it being really good for a grand strategy game on a budget, so if its at a low price i would say get it....but i wouldn't spend more than a couple bucks on this version as I'm pretty sure there are newer entries in the series. but good overall: 8/10
Good game, BUT: it has an error on launch which says that the game key is invalid - and this has been happening for a long time. I have to delete the shop key in windows registry EVERY TIME I want to play it. Not good.

第二次世界大戦を基準に各国と戦闘を繰り広げるが、史実通りに進めるかどうかはプレイヤー（とAI）が決められる。

・UIが貧弱過ぎる（内政編）
研究や売買など、何をするにしても一手間かかってしまう。
研究なら「右のパネルでDOMESTICを開いて研究を開く」といった感じ。
交易なら「右のパネルでECONOMYを開いて交易を開く」といった感じ。
なぜ直接表示できるようなボタンが無いのか...。
このゲームの性質上、そんなに頻繁に研究画面を開くことは無いだろうが、やはりストレスを感じてしまう。
・UIが貧弱過ぎる（ユニット操作編）
ユニットを動かすときに移動先を間違えてしまい、再指定することは良くあるだろう。
このゲームでは移動先決定後に別の場所に移動させようとすると、前の移動先を経由した移動になる。
そのため、現在の行動を中止してから移動先を指定する...といった作業になるため面倒。
わざわざあるタイルを経由して移動させることはほぼないのだが、この仕様は意味があるのだろうか。
・UIが貧弱過ぎる（画面操作編）
支配した地域の施設の一斉操作ができない。
例えば、石炭の生産量を最大にしたい場合、一覧からちまちま最大を指定していく必要がある。
また、何かを大量生産したい場合（戦争に備えてユニットを...など）もちまちま指定していく必要がある。
・全体的に遅い
研究や生産や施設の改善など、あらゆる項目に多くのターンを要する。
そのため、ひたすらターン終了を連打することになる。
1ターンが一週間の扱いであるため、核開発などがすぐ終わるのは現実的ではないかもしれないが、これはゲームである。
何の変化もなくただボタンを押しているだけの状態は結構辛いものがある。
・研究が貧弱過ぎる
研究の殆どがユニットの性能向上か、似たようなユニットの生産を可能にするもの。
残りは攻撃防御の効率上昇、弾道ミサイル開発などである。
もうちょっと何とかならなかったのだろうか。
しかも一部の研究はXXが研究できるようになるという単なる踏み台の研究であり、存在意義が不明である。

変な物がない硬派なゲームが好きな人には良いのかもしれない。
CIVみたいに色々あるわけではないので、そういったものを求めている人には向かない。

Great game with countless replay hour
WWII Grand Strategy without the endless fiddly Hearts of Iron/Supreme Commander nonsense. If you enjoy fighting with other countries instead of fighting with the interface, I highly recommend this game. The best feature is The Book: an encyclopedic in-game cross indexed how-to guide. Instead of crapping around for hours trying to figure out how to boost production or propose an alliance (as you do in those *other* games), you're never more than three or so clicks away from the answers you need. Brilliant stuff!

How to fix the license key issue---
Go to your "Run" program.
Type in "regedit"
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Muzzy Lane Software.
Delete the "Muzzy Land Software" folder.
Run the game and enjoy.
It's a good game except for that issue.

I bought the game. I played it for 2 hours. I tried to play it another day and they told me I don't have a valid key. Told me to reinstall the game. I did. Still no valid key. No key settings like games that do require keys.
This is quite literally unplayable.
Edit: Turns out this is a bug =D this game has a bug that makes you think the game was stolen from you. And the fix is to delete a key in your windows registry. Wtf? This game is 14 years old and instead of fixing such a glaring bug they chose to make a GOLD edition that costs more (and probably fixes the bug too). Shame on these developers.
Juego muy Bueno, ademas de ser barato cuando esta de oferta, es perfecto para jugarlo con Amigos o cuando uno esta aburrido.
Después de años de estrenarse aun continuo jugandolo. También te da la opción de escoger los diferentes bandos y Países de la Guerra, puedes crear tus propios Mods, partidas Personalizadas o bien jugar con el de otros creadores que le dan mas entretenimiento.
Lo recomiendo para todos los que les gusten los juegos de Estrategia, La Historia del Siglo XX y La Segunda Guerra Mundial.

It was a great game while it worked. Doesn't work anymore. I've updated it and tried to fix it but it still won't work. Idk why they won't fix it. We should receive a refund if that can't fix the issue. It's not our fault the game won't play.
does not load. Since the company made a World War 2 that does load, I will play that one instead. It would appear there is a fix for the load problem if you must play a World War 1 simulator.

По некоторым причинам сейчас мне не доступна Hearts of Iron 4 и я решил поискать дешёвую замену ей. Естественно для слабых ПК и эта игра меня разочаровала. Отсутствие русского языка, кривое управление, ужасная графика, узкий функционал и малое кол-во сценариев сделали этой игре плохую оценку от меня. Не рекомендую.

Bad. The economy in the game is ridiculous, was building dozens and dozens of tank divisions without problems and rampaging; no need to build infantry or else. A game doesnt have to be 100% realistic but come on....

If your looking for am old school turn based strategy game, this game is great. It takes some time to get used to but once you get the hang of it its really in depth.
I have been playing war games at the strategic level for roughly 20 years across various mediums; board games, miniatures (historic, fantasy, sci-fi). At the top of the list of played have always been the various offerings of WWII- everyone seems to have made a game for it at some point. Making History: The Calm & the Storm is an excellent offering in this large and expansive genre field. It goes beyond the typical unit does x damage, defends y damage and some system determines the winner. There is an impressive cultural aspect, economic aspect, and diplomatic aspect. Each of which ties into each other- informing and affecting the aspects into a wonderful tapestry of mayhem with subtle overtones of historic plausibility. This is not to say there are no downsides to the game. The learning curve is steep and it is easy to be overwhelmed by the choices before you. For the beginner, intermediate, and advanced player the game has something to offer and I am sure as I play more games I'll continue to be pleasantly surprised.

Works fine on win 10. I got this game on sale for 49 cents. It is more of a strategy game than a tactical one. You can't plan an encircling move since there so little territories. A rather easy strategy game, it just seems a little complex. You should play the US first since their OP. I was able to take over the world with Republic of Spain as my only ally. Only problem was running out of food. You should increase your infrastructure and industries, since it is ok to have a deficit in the beginning. Try to stockpile on things you’re lacking through the global exchange, especially food. Obviously starting in 1936 gives you an advantage. The AI won’t be historical at this date. I was rather passive the first few games. The game boils down to having your big stack beat their big stack. After that it is usually all over. Every so often I get the invalid license key, so I had to regedit a file. Rate this game 6/10.
Played for around 2 hours as Germany, rushed war and became the greatest power in the world. I can definitely say that it's better than HOI4
