I picked this up to play with a friend since we like the COD Zombies formula, and I liked TimeShifters, but man.. this is not good. Even for the current discount of $0.89 it isn't worth that. You can buy a vastly better and more-polished zombie horde indie game for extremely cheap, such as CYBERHUNK, Ultimate Zombie Defense 1 & 2, Zedfest, Zombie Estate 2, Nation Red, or the upcoming Imperium.
I'm not even sure where to start with this game's issues, so here's just a few short sentences of various problems the game has:
There's only one slightly interesting map (Church) while the other 3 are extremely forgettable and made up of generic square corridors and rooms.
None of the guns feel very good, they sound weak, and have pretty terrible animations (the G13 straight up doesn't even have a reload animation..).
It's a very buggy game, not even rebinding keys works properly (also the game doesn't recognize side mouse buttons). Most things your teammate does aren't shown properly on your end, like a lot of weapons are missing world models so you'll see your friend using a pump shotgun when firing a Junkgun (and you can't see the bricks fired from that unless you're the one using it), or a pistol when holding the "Smite" bible, or when meleeing they'll just glitch out and have no animation. I also loved how every time a bullet hits a metal surface it's excruciatingly loud.
Everyone has the same generic bald man model (Why make such a boring character if you're gonna have every player use it? Just do faceless grunts or something).
Lastly, the balancing is really not good. There's no reason to even use any of the guns because the zombies move very fast at high waves and hit you without even finishing their attack animation (they also just phase right through barricades once broken), so you're better off just buying the axe and spamming it. It's a one-hit kill to wave 30. Meanwhile the two Tier 5 guns that the game has (AA-12 and Junkgun) aren't remotely as good.
This feels like a game that should still be in Early Access, yet it's not and the last update was February 20th, 2023, so I don't think you're going to see any of these issues ever fixed.
“I wanna play CoD zombies”
“We have Zombies at home”
Except that it’s lovingly made by someone instead of a soulless corporation and plays well without sacrificing your personal security (I’m looking at you BO III).
What we get is a very simple and fun wave based squad survival. This game is fun with friends and will run on a literal potato. It’s a good deck game and it’s made by the guy that did TimeShifters (go buy that too).
It's a really nice alternative to CoD: Zombies if you and your buddies are looking to get a similar, simple experience on the cheap. It has 4 maps (one of which is returning from the original L.S.S), various perks (no perk limit W), and the barricade-survival gameplay that we've come to love.
It's not too deep, but for its price, L.S.S II is a hidden little gem.
This game might look like a little rough around the edges, because it is, but it's actually well worth the price of admission. The gameplay is simple but enjoyable, the sound design is pretty good for the most part, and while the graphics are probably the weakest aspect, I personally see a bit of charm in them and think they fit the style of the game. Even the time you get from just exploring all the maps and trying to learn the best strategies for each makes this worth it. Lots of ideas are borrowed from CoD, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Don't get me wrong though, there are enough changes to keep things fresh and interesting for an experienced Zombies player.
First off, the gameplay is very reminiscent of CoD Zombies: Survive increasingly difficult waves by buying better weapons, perks, and staying ahead of the hordes. The perk-a-cola mechanic is carried over, but with slight changes and additions that are fun to try out. Stamina and health are also slightly reworked, but maintain the same basic concepts. I'd say where it most differs is the difficulty. Rounds 1-4 compared to 5+ are like night and day, and from someone who is used to the gradual buildup of CoD, it's a bit jarring. After playing a few times and getting used to it though, I do enjoy it. It's worth sticking through. I was almost turned off by it, but I'm glad I came back to it.
The sound design feels surprisingly good. Most of the weapons feel punchy, and the zombies go down with a satisfying crunch. It also extends to other parts as well. Shooting a barrel will cause it to ring out. Hitting a plastic water tank makes a dull thud, accompanied by some green ooze spilling out. The purchasing sound effect seems almost ripped from CoD, but it works there and so fits in this game as well. The rapid fire drill of your gun after getting the double bullet upgrade also feels rewarding and fun. The only place this feels underwhelming is with the zombies. These moaning sounds feel pretty generic. Also, the music is bare bones, and the menu song repetitive, but I do like the guitar track after a match ends. Overall solid with some noticeable exceptions.
I think the graphics are going to be the biggest turn off for people, which is understandable but I advise against it. I find the bright aesthetic to be fun, but the textures definitely clash is some places. Again, I feel the zombies suffer the most here, and aren't particularly interesting to look at and can be kind of ugly. Overall though, it's worth getting through for the game.
And now for some personal thoughts and experience on this game. The developer really seems to care about this game. It really does feel like an indie developer with only a bit of artistic experience putting a fun game together first and figuring out graphics after. Part of my reasoning for saying this: I bought this game on my own, and after playing a bit I convinced my friend to buy it so we could play together. He did, but the multiplayer was broken; the zombies wouldn't spawn and we were stuck running around at round 1. So I posted my issue in the discussion page for bugs, and within a day the developer responded and fixed the issue. (You can see this now on the discussion page). Don't get me wrong, this is still a rough game with bugs and issues, but it certainly doesn't feel like a cash grab asset-flip. For $3, I think it's worth checking out.
TL;DR: A simple, fun, cheap game for a cheap price. You won't find the next big indie hit here, but stick with it past round 5 and you'll get some fun out of it.
This is a classic wave-based shooter where you have to survive as long as possible in a small map against endless enemy waves. Your foes are radioactive zombies that start as sluggish slow-moving targets, and then progressively increase both their resistance and their speed, until they become a serious threat. This is not the most innovative game, for sure, but I think it is rather fun, until it becomes awfully repetitive, of course. But this is a common flaw of this type of games. I liked the possibility to upgrade your character with perks right on the battlefield (perks are not permanent, they last until you are killed), the good variety of weapons (the shotgun is one of the best I have ever tried), the size of each wave (zombie hordes are truly massive), and the level design of the maps (you can unlock new areas, set traps, set barricades, and take advantage of covers and shortcuts to trick your enemies). I didn't like the fact that waves are endless (I preferred a limit to something like 50 waves), the fact that grenades are totally useless (candies would be more dangerous), and the fact that some weapons are too OP compared to others (you are not stimulated to use all the available arsenal). I certainly recommend this game to all fans of fast and frantic shooters, but don't expect anything new, it's the usual stuff.
Cheers guys!
