About the only complaint I would have ever had about this game was the load time, and that's quite behind me now that I have an ssd, the start time feels basically normal now. As far as the positives are concerned, I find any typical shooter weapon converted to its arcane counterpart to be a refreshing change of pace, and the customizability of each variant of spell attack makes even five different choices of ammo for one weapon feel limited and ironically primitive, then you get actual defensive magic on top of it rather than shield triggers or having to rely on cover positions. And while the story and dialog may be no Fallout New Vegas, it's certainly more in depth and intriguing than most other first-person shooters.

Loads of people seems to be upset about this game dont know why. I found this game after 12 years after seeing it once and it is what i expected and what i wanted and what it promissed to be at least now and even back then as i watched some old YT videos game didnt changed a lot sience. Totaly Recomend if you like RPG and Mage games plus some sort of challange and want to just relax.

Making Spells starts with 3 "ingridients": Aspect , Type of skill , Attuned power.
Even tho is seems to be simple on paper becomes a something that you sit down for couple minutes to think about, as each Aspect/Element focuses on diffrent things and each Type of skill and Attuned power has diffrent uses.

(So as i said this is your "HP" you have 3 bars on each lost you do something alos this affect your evasion skill "blink" as some types of powers affect if you can do Quick blink or Charged Blink, it can limit it to only quick, only charged or non blink)

1.AOE:
-Pool (Deals damage over time if in range of it)
-Trap (Damages on enemy entry )
-Area (Similar to pool but it is just an Inpact so one time hit)

2.Projectal*:
-Missile (Simple "fire ball" ahh type, can be guided so you dont have to aim)
-Lob ("fire ball" but you play NBC and you lob it every time however it hits something it explodes in to 3 more projectals that also are lobed lol)
-Ray ("F*cking Laser Sights", low range BEAM OF LASER)

3.Nova*:
- Just a type of defense shield [Presist,Enchanter,Enraging] (There some types of that However i dont care because this is defense, so why block incoming damage if you can kill enemy before it can deal damage? Exactly! But you can use it in offense as well, when you do a perfect block it does cast wave of something depending on attuned power)

-Mastery (CC, Stores Damage and deal it when conditions are met [Hit it with diffrent Element or when like stuned])

As mentionet earlier this game has Linear Story (revenge) and Linear World (locations that are like tunels guiding you right to target/destination) so dont expect to travel 21314Km form A to B. There is no equipment so no need to worry about money, NPCs, and anything else just cast fire ball and go! And thats what takes away the depth of world, game, story as there is only GO and KILL type of gameplay but it can be entertaining especally if you like to experiment with new tactics and spells/skills.

[b] The pros: [/b] Satisfying magic system, with spell combos that look cool and feel impactful. Many of the environments look great, and there are satisfying boss battles on Badass difficulty.

[b] The cons: [/b] Lacklustre storyline, which feels convoluted because of a flawed delivery style with repetitive, linear gameplay. There is minimal decision making aside from playing around with spell loadouts and upgrades, which is fun until you realise which decisions are clearly best so it becomes stale. Glitchy, unbalanced audio at times.

[b] The unexpected: [/b] Low percentage achievements, particularly on Badass difficulty.

[b] The summary: [/b] I really wanted to like this game a lot more than I did, but it took me two attempts and a good few breaks between play sessions to complete it. It feels like a draft, lacking polish and focus. I do recommend trying the game, but with caveats - don't expect a high quality story-driven experience; temper your expectations of gameplay variety; and above all, buy it when on sale to enjoy blasting enemies with some cool spells before you get bored, switch off from the storyline, and either slog to the end or never play it again.

Проходил в 2014, игра запомнилась крутой динамикой и невероятно красивыми локациями. Также могу отметить тактические моменты, которые преодолеваешь налету прямо во время боя. Это как крутой Сэм, только в сеттинге классического фэнтези. На мой взгляд игру необоснованно хейтят, упоминая линейность и легкий уровень сложности. По линейности - это жанр такой, она в этом плане ничем не отличается от дума или сэма, по легкому уровню сложности - игра далеко не простая, особенно если ищешь весь лут, но и не душнит 🤷‍♂️ Игру рекомендую, потраченного времени не жалею 👍

Lichdom: Battlemage hooked me hard in the first couple hours — the spell crafting system is genuinely unlike anything I've played, letting you mix elements, delivery methods, and effects into combos that make you feel like an unstoppable archmage. The CryEngine 3 visuals still hold up beautifully, and landing a perfectly timed parry-nova or watching a necromancy-corruption synergy tear through a crowd is legitimately satisfying. But somewhere around the third or fourth zone, the cracks become impossible to ignore: you're fighting the same handful of reskinned enemies through corridor after corridor, the story is barely there, and the crafting system's complexity starts to feel like busywork rather than depth since the game never properly explains how destruction values and control effects actually interact. I pushed through hoping it would click the way other reviewers described, but by the swamp levels I was sprinting past enemies just to get it over with. If you snag it for a few bucks in a bundle, the spell system alone is worth a few evenings — but at anything close to full price, the repetition will kill your enthusiasm long before the credits roll.

While the idea itself is fantastic, I don’t think the game does much to actually live up to the potential.

There are a lot of combinations for spells you can do and I know later in the game there are over the top synergies that are supposed to make you feel powerful…but none of that shines through early on. The spell system is poorly explained and feels like little more than increasing a number by a few percentage points instead of meaningful changes.

Even if this issue were fixed though, the much larger problem is that you’re not given anything interesting to do with these abilities. It’s hours of fighting through boring corridors of the same enemies with a fairly mediocre story and characters you don’t care about.

El juego está muy bien, tiene un sistema de magia y efectos bastante chulo y te empuja a intentar sacarle partido a sus diferentes "escuelas". El sistema de crafteo de hechizos, mejoras y tal es interesante, puede ser difícil de entender a ratos pero tampoco es necesario tryhardearlo para avanzar con el juego.

Lo único que me falla a ratos es la movilidad, pero es un juego en primera persona así que es comprensible, y que en mi caso el mando no me funciona bien.

No es muy largo y eso a veces se agradece, aunque un rpg más grande con algunas de las ideas que hay en este juego podría haber estado realmente bien.

It's ok, the promise of diverse magic is brought down by how boring feeling the combat feels. You go from room to room and shoot fireballs or flamethrower at enemies. The magic is fun to use, but didn't feel like I wanted to continue.

I really like the idea of the game, but the implementation just is not for me. The game is nausea indusing. There is no targeting reticles, no way to disable head-bobbing. Repetitive levels and enemies. I can deal with the repetitiveness if the gameplay is sound, but in this case it is not.

Really, I hate games that will not allow me to remap controls. I am left handed and I do not think I should be forced to play right handed. We have AI but key rebinding to complicated to put in a game?
Who knows what type of game this is. My character stands there and I cannot remap the controls.

Gra jest nieciekawa, nie wciąga. Nie udało mi się w pełni zrozumieć systemu craftingu czarów, ponieważ nawet nie czułem takiej potrzeby. Игра эффектно пускает пыль в глаза, показывая тебе трёхметрового чёрта в качестве босса, но в самом начале боссфайта умелый игрок поймёт, что его обдурили и босс на самом деле- это лучники. Эта игра- это динамичный танец с названием "Как бы мне не получить 100500 стрел в сраку за 0,2 секунды".
А лучник в этой игре, к слову, работает не как обычный лучник, он лупит похлеще турели земля-воздух, обрушивая на тебя град из стрел. В самом первом акте это ещё не так критично, так как лучники просто наносят кучу урона, но начиная со второго акта они получают возможность замораживать ГГ и сбивать его с ног одним попаданием, а это, между прочим, вместе с ГГ сбивает и его каст заклинаний. Ситуация получает максимальное развитие, когда на небольшом коридорном поле оказываются уже 5 лучников, которые начинают лупить в тебя со всех сторон одновременно. В этот момент превращается в стимулятор перебежек от колонны до колонны. В этот момент понимаешь, что не будешь кромсать врагов как мясорубка, а будешь сидеть за ближайшим камушком и изредка из-за него выглядывать, чтобы пульнуть один фаербол, а потом... Дальше сидеть за камушком

This is honestly one of the more interesting FPS Magic games out there. The entire spell crafting system is poorly explained but there is a good loop here.

I personally dig the idea of constantly tinkering with the spells since you will have to replace your spells every now and then to scale up to your enemies.

Then there's also the satisfaction of pulling off the synergies and initiating overkill combos to make synergies charge faster and faster till you're practically constantly spawning blackholes and meteors.

Crafting & synergies are pretty good — it's an old game so we can't expect anything crazy, yet it's a really good magic game for those times. I would recommend it to people who are patient and want to progress without a rush.

There's good combos, good synergies, but the game takes a while to master — it's not something you can figure out in one day.

The problem is: the game overall gets really boring and repetitive, and the worst issue is some sigils are VERY boring. For example, Necromancer should be able to summon not only guards but also a golem or a mage for bigger support.

I would love the idea of an ability tree or something where you can choose freely to customize your powers to your desire. For example, you can choose whether you want to focus more on summoning guards, mages, golems, infecting/damaging, or whatever.

I know the uses of all those sigils are very individual, and you can choose whether you're going into damage, control, mastery, etc.

I would rate the game a strong 6/10.

czyli magiczny FPS zapomniany przez czas, z dobrych powodów...
Nuda, siermiężna nuda. Nudny jest system ulepszeń, nudne jest strzelanie fireballami, nudna jest muzyka, nudna jest fabuła i nudne są walki z bosami, sztywnymi chochołami z dwoma, no, może trzema atakami, co w porównaniu do zwykłych przeciwników których jest z 8, nawalających ciągle jednym atakiem, miłą odmianą.
Gra jest słaba, średnia nie za bardzo, po prostu słaba. Dusisz myszkę. gnieciesz klawisze, łupucupu, i walka skończona, musiałem się zmusić by przejść do końca.
Największym plusem Lichdom są lokacje, różnorodne i zwyczajnie piękne makiety, mimo że płaskie, sztampowe, statyczne i puste, to mają bardzo ładne widoczki.
W moim rankingu magicznych FPSów Lichdom jest na przedostatnim miejscu, górując jedynie nad Immortals of Aevum czy jak ten gniot się nazywał

สิ่งที่ทำให้เกมนี้ไม่น่าเล่น

There’s nothing else quite like this game. The story is awful, the levels are just corridors, and you’re repeating the same fights from start to finish.

But what fights! It’s like a mix between Dark Messiah and Serious Sam. It won’t keep you busy for long, but beneath the layer of bargain-bin RPG fluff, there’s something genuinely unique. And the graphics are still quite good for the time.

Oh boy, what a horrible mess of a game this one is. Incredibly boring, simple and tedious despite having so many things to be something better.

[*] RPG elements. I can bet that this was included just because some investor heard that RPGs are popular, because this system is barely implemented. On paper you can level up your sigils (aka elements), in practice I finished the game before I got even one of them maxed out (because the only viable leveling strategy is abusing save-load mechanic as you may need 10 or 1000 kills per level, based on RNG) AND the level ups themselves grant something like +1% DMG. The same goes for loot: lvl 16 spells may be worse than lvl 8 spells because of poorly implemented scaling, and even if you craft a more powerful spell - all your enemies are auto leveling so you will never feel overpowered, only just keeping up with the enemies.
[*] Spell variety aka “thousands of spell possibilities”. In theory you have 8 different elements, 3 different effects of spells (DMG, CC, buff) and 3 different types of said spells (projectile, nova, AOE), so the gameplay should be pretty diverse. In practice, however, you can only equip 3 elements at a time and you are limited to 3 spells per element, and those 3 spells must always be of 3 different types. So at best you are limited to 9 spells, if you don’t use novas as you don’t get close to enemies - subtract 3, if you don’t have components to craft good AOEs (as loot in this game isn’t a spell but a part of it - you will need up to 7 things to craft one good spell) - limit it even more. To be honest most of the time I had only 2 spells active - one for damage buff and one for dealing damage ( there was either no point in using something else or no components to craft a powerful enough spell), and using this 1-2 punch got rather stale after a few hours, and this game was much longer than those few hours. And no, the elements themselves don’t really change a lot, as many of those are more of a “choose your projectile colour” type of deal, and those that are truly unique are of questionable usability - sure, you can use necromancy to spawn allies, but they do barely any damage and block your spells.
[*] Combat. Truly, this is the worst part of the game. As I have already stated you are really limited in your spell selection, but how about we limit even more: damage spells do barely any damage if you don’t apply a damaging buff first as those make your spell do x10 damage. And to apply/proc said buff you can’t just use a spell - you have to cast it for a second, charge it for a second, and only after that it is ready. So this whole “no mana and no cooldowns” is a big lie - it takes at least 4 seconds to shoot one damaging spell - I can’t even compare this speed to diablo-likes that can spam 4-5 spells per second, it is much closer to turn based systems like neverwinter where turn takes 6 seconds. And to make things worse - sometimes one spell isn’t even enough to kill a basic mob, so every single encounter becomes really long, and said encounters are so plentiful that you can’t go even 10 meters forward without triggering another fight. But don’t worry, even though every single fight is this long they are extremely safe for two reasons: depending on your loadout you either have unlimited dodges or a parry window up to 4 seconds long, AND you have an extremely wide selection of different CC effects that can last for the duration of the whole battle. So every combat is exactly the same: you get into the room, paralyze all of the enemies and slowly kill them one by one - extremely dull and unengaging, but any attempt to do something else will increase the time you waste in combat exponentially.
[*] Enemies. If, for whatever reason, you are interested in what you will permastun in each combat - the selection is laughable. In the last chapter of the game you will still be killing the exact same crossbow skeletons you killed in the first chapter. All of the humans in all of the locations will either run towards your stun field with a melee weapon or throw the exact same green projectile at you. Demons - well, they will try to do something before getting stunned. Just in case you didn’t apply a stun - every combat has several enemies with CC, but unlike yours theirs CC is just to annoy you - it is applied often, sometimes from undodgeable attacks, but lasts only 0.1 second - just to reset your casting or charging. My point is - the variety of enemies is extremely low, and all of the enemies are killed in the same exact way, with no difference in tactics or approach.
[*] Story/world. Adding this just to tell you to expect nothing: instead of story you have the most generic revenge plot with zero depth, and instead of cool level/world design you have a long corridor with combat arenas - nothing to look at, nothing to explore - it is just the most basic map you could imagine.

Overall the game feels incredibly dull and monotonous, despite the advertised “thousands of spells” you are forced to use the same few things against a never ending swarm of cloned target dummies that can do nothing against you but will take too much time to kill.

The progression in this game is too granular. Equipping new spells doesn't feel great, because instead of doing 50 fire damage, now you're dealing 52. There was also some truly unfortunate walks to bosses that were too full of enemies to make the passage efficient. It was entertaining for a few hours and I was honestly enjoying the story, but at some point you WILL hit a wall where it just turns into a grind for little reward.

I'm always on the lookout for a game with an interesting magic system. Since the game was released ten years ago, I was fully willing to ignore the technical aspects and story as long as it provided a fun spell crafting experience that would make me live the power fantasy of becoming a mage. (For the record, I was pleasantly surprised with the visuals, but the only redeemable aspect about the story was that you can usually walk away while the characters are talking).

Unfortunately, the game offers an overwhelmingly complex spell crafting system at the service of a disappointingly shallow combat experience.

The spell crafting system really suffers from the lack of tutorial outside of a couple short videos, which sole merit is to notify you that the systems exist so you can look for an actual guide online. There are colours, numbers, dozens of menus and sub-menus, hundreds of items in your inventory, each with lines and lines of effects, and none of it is explained properly. Instead of guiding you progressively through the system, the entire thing is thrown at you at the beginning of the game with no explanation. The game does offer an alternative menu that automatically crafts for you, but it feels like a black box you have no control over and is absolutely not rewarding.

The weirdest thing is that the core system is pretty simplistic and could easily have been presented in a more intuitive way. There are really only 9 actual types of spells (e.g. missile, grenade, trap, ray, etc.) which you imbue with one of 8 elements (e.g. fire, ice, etc.) and one of 3 secondary focuses (damage, immobilisation, or vulnerability). This makes your arsenal of spells very redundant and uninspired, though the synergy between the three secondary focuses works well and the defensive system is surprisingly well-thought. It feels like wielding magic guns more than actual magic.

The bland challenges do nothing to compensate the lack of original spells. If enemies and goals were varied, it could have enticed you to try different spells to accommodate each situation. Instead, you simply walk from room to room to kill groups of interchangeable enemies in an endless corridor. The only enemies that stand out are often the frustrating ones; it's not rare to be surrounded by a wave of enemies popping from behind you, endlessly freezing, slowing, and knocking you down on repeat.

In the end, it's a game that is unnecessarily difficult to get into, yet quickly becomes boring as soon as you figure out how shallow it actually is.

Lichdom: Battlemage er kort fortalt er skytespill der du spiller som en trollmann/mage. Her er magi-systemet uten tvil spillets sterkeste side, da det både er orginalt, innovativt og intuitivt. Systemet er på overflaten enkelt å anvende "as-is", der hver av de åtte formlene/spells/Sigils har sitt bruksområde, styrker og svakheter.
Systemets dybde kommer i at man kan lage egne trylleformler og hvordan man velger å kombinere formlene i kamp mot fienden.

Apropos kamp - så er Lichdom det spillet som gir den mest actionfylte følelsen av å spille som trollmann, og det som gjør spillet så interessant som det er. Magien føles farlig og mer spektakulær enn i for eksempel Skyrim. Mye av spetakkelet skyldes bruken av CryEngine. Både effekter, miljøer og natur ser vanvittig lekkert ut til tider, og det er synd spillet ikke noen foto-modus.

Selv om magien er gøy å leke med og grafikken er fin å se på, så blir dessverre spillet veldig fort ensformig. Nivåene er nemlig ekstremt lange, og det skjer veldig lite forutenom slåssing og litt historiefortelling i form av "spøkelser"/flashbacks fra fortiden man møter på veien. Hvert nivå er gjerne 30-50 minutter lange, men de skulle helst vært forkortet ned til et kvarter. Gameplay loopen består av slåssing, flashbacks, snakk med companion, gå et stykke, repeter. På slutten av hvert nivå venter det naturligvis en boss, men disse er ikke mer enn typiske "kulesvamper" og krever hverken strategi eller taktikk for å bekjempe.

Etter cirka to timer hadde jeg fullført tredje kapittel, og da følte jeg meg igrunn ganske ferdig og skjønte at resten av spillet kom til å bli mer av det samme. Jeg endte med å skru ned vanskelighetsgraden og bare løp forbi alle fiendene. Da så jeg hvor repeterende nivået faktisk var, med fiender bak hver krok og noen spøkelser innimellom. Her forsto jeg at Lichdom: Battlemage er selve definisjonen på "padding" og avinstallerte spillet.

På et vis er dette et undervurdert spill som det er synd at ikke flere snakker om, da det er et av svært få i "First Person Mage" sjangeren sammen med Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (som forøvrig er å anbefale på det sterkeste). På en annen side så blir dette for ensformig, nettopp fordi det blir for mye av det gode og lite annet. Hadde dette vært en mer komprimert historie på fem-seks timer fremfor ni, så hadde det vært et knallbra spill.

I finally got around to finish this game. Firstly, keep in mind this is a pure mage game and you will do a lot of dodging.
Overall it is a very good game that has driven me nuts to figure out a good combination of spells to use and upgrade.

The spell crafting system is very good, you need to strategise and not just dump into a fight.
Upgrades are a must and you have 10 areas to keep upgraded - this means it can get very annoying to try and collect all the components you need every single time you play.

To give you an idea: each upgrade costs 2 of the same rarity. Rarities are as follows: 1. Common, 2. Uncommon, 3. Rare, 4. Super Rare, 5. Legendary, 6. Unique (only for the shapes).
Each shape can have up to 5 augments - which means trying to get 5 legendaries is hellish to say the least.

Combat can be taxing on the dodging front. Depending on the boss, you might need to change your tactics, load outs etc. Again it is made difficult since there is such a lock in place on the crafting side.

The story is ok, quite standard overall but can be developed further with a decent sequel.

If you are a fan of magic, then yes go ahead and play this one - it is by far the best magic system I have played where it actually pays off.

Although this game can fulfill your dream of becoming a battlemage with mighty magic powers, infinite mana, numerous spells and a clear purpose (revenge and save-the-world), unfortunately, it lacks an interesting plot and enjoyable gameplay.
What are you going to do throughout the game? Run through repetitive battles with loads of enemies in different landscapes, smashing the same three buttons to cast the same three spells of your liking (I must say though you get a good opportunity to try eveything). No choices, no decisions, no proper dialogues you can really take part in. The whole story is just meh. The final cutscene lasts probably less than 30 seconds. I wanted to see more after killing enemies’ hordes for nearly 22 hours!

its a boomer shooter doom clone.
you can craft any spell you can imagine and this part is a lot of fun.
the game is clearly designed for a controller as movement is sluggish for a mouse but fun on a controller, spell casting and activating things are also very slow for a mouse but nice on a controller.
there is no reticle and the fov is bad for a monitor, while attacks like beams and ground sigils are fine, projectile attacks cannot be properly aimed. to remedy this, the game adds homing to projectiles, this clearly was designed with a controller in mind.
the keyboard control scheme is as good the controller control scheme. this part is well done.
designing a boomer shooter for a controller doomed this game as there is no market for it, but the game is very enjoyable if you know what to expect from it. try it out, it can be fun.
game has some great particle effects. the small details in the environment is also great.
the setting is dark fantasy and the graphic design is well done for it. voice acting is serviceable.
I liked that mechanics and gameplay elements were only explained the second time you encounter them, allowing you to experiment and find them on your own.

Not worth it despite recent updates polishing the game. Core game design took a wrong turn at some point and the game just isn't fun.

Pro:
- 'Strong spell design system'. Hotly debatable but lets just fly with that.
- Decent graphics even in 2025.

Con:
- The rest. Story? Hard to even follow it as you need to place yourself just right to hear what the NPC characters are saying.
- Repeatable arena fighting. Man do i hate these sometimes optional arenas with ever stronger opponents appearing. Some can't get enough of this so depends if this is bad.
- When you take things apart and make a game play loop out of it then the sum of parts is.... lacking. You make spells with +5 more damage or holding targets down 1.2 seconds longer etc. But it is still just long tunnels you run around looking for next checkpoint which you may or may not even properly spot and have to do it all over again if you quit the game.

This game just boils you slowly like a frog. Again some cant get enough of these and yank the challenge to eleven and delve deep into the spell system and are happy with this. The rest should reconsider.

I dunno why ignored this game, Its fun to kill some enemies by spells, no guns, in beautiful semi-open fantasy worlds. In this winter I love this game.

PROS+ wolrds, enemies, combat, difficult range easy--hard, fast travel, story background - revenge and kill the next boss.

CONS- for me confusing system of crafting spells and upgrades, separation inventory and journal.

Jogo possui um proposta bem interessante, mistura certo estilo RPG com magia e primeira pessoa é uma pena que o jogo possui apenas 1 linguagem acabando por isso tirar um pouco do alcance do jogo e também é bem mal otimizado para GPU Nvidia, imagina de uma GTX 670 de recomendado para uma 4070 super sendo usada em 100% no QHD very high batendo 80° em um jogo de 2014 rodando a 165fps com quedas para 100 em alguns pontos (ainda uso de +80% da GPU nessas quedas), travando FPS em 120 da para contornar levemente esse "problema". Oque mais me surpreende é conquistas como chegar em tal ponto especifico da historia ter menos de 5% de pessoas com ela, eu gostei do jogo aprendendo a fazer combos com as magias voce consegue facilmente derrotar os inimigos, recomendo... mas o jogo ficaria com 6,4/10

A neat spell creation system, nice visuals, and great voice acting can't mask the dull story, sluggish combat, and off-feeling game mechanics. Cool for a few hours but too frustrating of a play for me beyond that. Get it at a huge discount if you're interested.

Neste jogo você é um mago ou maga e precisa combinar itens para criar magias.

O problema é que esse tipo jogo FPS com mecânicas de RPG sempre acaba tendo os seguintes problemas:

1 - Muito grind.
2 - O balanceamento dos combates é chato porque: ou fica muito difícil porque suas magias estão fracas e aí os inimigos ficam esponjas de balas, ou fica muito fácil porque você deixou as magias poderosas.
Nunca alcança um meio-termo.

+ Os gráficos são bonitos.
+ Os designs dos personagens são bacanas e a ambientação também.
+ As magias possuem muitas variações possíveis.
- O enredo é ruim e frustrante.
Não traz uma conclusão satisfatória e ainda acaba em cliffhanger.

Eu completei o jogo e o motivo que eu realmente não posso recomendar é que foi chato de jogar.

Let me start by bringing up the game's strong points.

Yes, you can put together almost any type of combat-based spell you can imagine. There are eight different sigils, which you can look at as the "elements" or "classes" of your spells. You have fire for good damage and high crit potential, kinesis for force-based movement control, corruption is a fun one that lets you create swarms of parasitic minions when landing a kill, it's all pretty cool. And you don't have to stick to what you get with these either, you craft your own spells on the go.

For this, you choose one of your three currently equipped sigils, one out of seven unique spell shapes (three for targeted spells, three for area-of-effect spells, and one so-called "nova" spell that is triggered if you parry enemy attacks), and an augment which determines whether the spell will deal direct damage, cause the sigil's signature debuff, or decrease the enemy's resistance to your critical hit effects.

If you upgrade spell components all the way to the unique rarity level, you can also use them to craft a synergy spell, which uses two simultaneously equipped sigils and has to be filled up by using both together, but can absolutely decimate your enemies. For example, if you upgrade one of your AoE shapes to unique, you could activate a meteor shower synergy on it, slot it into a kinesis spell, use both fire and kinesis to slay some enemies, and some time later, you just get to pull a meteor from space to smite the demonic molerat that dared strike at you. You don't lose these spells either, you need to recharge the synergy spells by using its two elements in tandem with each other enough times again, but other than that, all your spells are infinitely usable.

The magic system is amazingly complex, if you run the numbers for three augment focuses per seven shapes per eight sigils, you end up with a ton of possible spells to craft, and I love that.

Now for the points in which the game falls short.

The story is...there, I guess. Depending on whether you play male or female, you have watched either your wife get killed or your sister be sold off into slavery, but in both cases, it boils down to you having a vendetta with a corrupted lord and the demon cult he belongs to. The cult threatens to take over the kingdom, so this archmage gifts you with magical power and asks you to rid the land of their grasp, and because that fits with your unfinished business with them, you agree to go out there and throw some [strike] kitchen sinks [/strike] fireballs. Not awful, but rather generic and not exactly rich or deep.

The combat is repetitive and occasionally becomes downright annoying. The enemies are mostly just reskins of one another. Every basic enemy type has between two and four variations of itself with the exact same moveset, where the only difference comes down to the regionally appropriate reskin. The sword and shield zombie becomes a sword and shield mummy with the exact same moveset in the desert region, oh boy! And you better hope the elite archer that's coming up doesn't come with knock down, they'll keep you stun-locked more than a bad hangover on a Thursday morning.

The acquisition of more spell shapes and augments is grindy as hell too, which wouldn't be a problem if the combat had more variety. But it being as repetitive as it is, all the grinding does is make you resentful of the fact you don't have access to the stuff you want already.

The endgame is atrociously monotonous. You just go into a variety of arena fights that give you high-rarity spell components to craft more spells with, so you can continue to do more of the same arena fights to repeat the process. And yes, you can fast travel back to the beginning of the game, the non-boss enemies respawn. But what's the point in that either?

And lastly, the entire spell crafting system is never explained in detail. You can learn about it yourself, yes, but despite my enjoying the complexity of it, I doubt many people will share the motivation to really sink their teeth into it all. It took me SO long to realize why I would want a high destruction value on some of my control focused spells despite control spells not directly dealing damage, and yet that is one key part in maximizing the worth of chaining your spells together.

Let me explain: Some control spells deal damage over time, while others can be forcefully ended prematurely for huge burst damage. The control value on a control focused spell determines how long the status lasts in most cases. The destruction value then determines the amount of damage over time, or the amount of burst damage dealt when breaking the control effect on the enemy. So, if your destruction value on that shiny new freezing ray of yours is too low, sure, the enemy won't be moving at all for like ten seconds, great, but you following it up with your ball of non-consentual euthanasia will instantly end the effect for a tradeoff of squat all in the way of bonus shatter damage.

Where do you get the explanation of that? Nowhere until you read the journal entries on the different sigils, look into what their specific effects do, and put two and two together to find how to best mix and match these effects.

To potential consumers of this product: I personally do enjoy playing this game somewhat, I like finding ways in which I can combine my spells that I hadn't thought of before, and that is the core of the game really. But it requires a lot of looking into, much of the resources of which the developers do not make easily apparent. And the rest of the gameplay is not nearly palatable enough to motivate people who don't already have that curiosity of "what if I put X together with Y to make Z happen" to keep them wanting to figure out how to make spells synergize. So, unless you are just looking to experiment with cool spell combos and interactions and don't have high expectations outside of that for this particular game, you might want to sit this one out.

And to the developers: This game would have come across a whole lot better if you just made the combat more diverse and engaging and explained your magic system better. It would have only required unique enemies with different strengths and weaknesses, instead of copy-pasted reskins with maybe some elite descriptors here and there, maybe make more endgame modes, perhaps a roguelike dungeon crawler mode for increasing rewards the further you get in there including some spell shapes that you might only be able to get from the advanced levels of that, and then you'd just need to give more hints at how to make use of the augment values, and there you go, you have a solid game.

this game purports to be a mage fighting through a campaign of bad guys and delivers. I enjoyed figuring out the magic system and the way the various spell shapes and modifiers worked, but not everyone will enjoy that process.

There are lots of ways to kill the bad guys, and the game offers easy mode spell creation for those who don't want to figure it all out. I think the game is begging to be ported to VR.

An FPS, but with magic. It's enjoyable for the most part. The combat is actiony & fast-paced, you have to dodge enemy attacks and time your attacks (you don't have mana or cooldowns, so you can spam your attacks). There's a nifty crafting system, allowing you to combine different sigils (fire, ice, necro, kinesis, lightning, delirium, corruption, and phase) to create new spells with a variety of effects, allowing you to customize your play style. Graphically speaking, the game still holds up; it looks decent for a game released 10 years ago, and the spell particle effects are still nice and provide good visual feedback during combat. The boss fights were a bit challenging, but it was a welcome change, as most mobs felt more like cannon fodder. There's some replay value, as you'll need multiple playthroughs to fully use all the available spells and combinations, plus killing enemies in this game is pretty enjoyable, especially with a broken build.

There are some things that kinda suck: the combat becomes boring after a while, as there's limited mob variety, and you feel like you are fighting the same stuff over and over again, until you get to a boss fight; there's no real story to talk of (there are some cutscenes that introduce the characters, but that's about it, and everything presented feels very generic, so I don't remember much from the cinematics); the game can feel difficult/punishing at times, especially the boss fights (but maybe that's just a skill issue); I sometimes had trouble with the controls, while trying to switch spells, the game feels a bit unpolished at times or not as responsive as you'd want it to be, which is kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in a game that heavily relies on your response times; level design is kinda linear, there's not much room for exploration. As a side note, I would've loved this game to have some multiplayer, as that would've added more to the chaos.

Overall, Lichdom is a decent game, and making you play in first-person, makes it a pretty immersive experience, as you fully embrace the Battlemage™ power fantasy.

How should I best put it...

In a nutshell - yes, I do recommend playing this game if you're into spellcrafting and shooters. Lichdom: Battlemage is a well executed looter-shooter. Its story is simple but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I came here to shoot and explode people with meteors and harass them with hordes of undead, not ask questions.
However, if you choose to play it, be ready for a rollercoaster of emotions, because the game is great at providing the high with big numbers, but it also comes with downs of some questionable-if-not-poor design choices.

In less of a nutshell.
Lichdom: Battlemage is an experience, and there is no other way to put it.
You find yourself on a linear path from start to finish, that deviates only to provide you with some extra loot, or a challenge (that gives extra loot) or a stash with health in case you need it. So far so good. As you progress through that world, for each section, which are separated by save points, you increase the "rarity level" which provides you with increased chance to receive loot of better rarity, which is honestly a fairly novel idea to me, and one that I quite enjoyed. It rewards skillful and/or careful playstyle that avoids deaths, further empowering your magic and allowing you to be even more effective at dealing with enemies.
I enjoyed that mechanic about 95% of the time, but about that remaining 5% later.

Magic is simple, but due to the fact you can mix and match abilities as you want, you end up with a very complex and surprisingly deep system of magic. Unfortunately, I did not manage to play with every element in my playthrough, but the elements of my choice (Kinesis, Fire and Necromancy) were incredibly fun to play with. Kinesis provided much needed crowd control while applying Mastery, Fire had all the "ooomph" that was needed, and Necromancy provided an army of meat between myself and enemies.
Each element is split into three spells (Targeted, AoE and Nova), each ability has three "shapes" and each spell can be attuned in one of three ways (Destruction, Control and Mastery). As the game progresses, you are gradually eased into the fact that you need to use all three of these attunements. The numbers simply go too high to go through the entire game while spamming basic fireball, and realising that provided me with some much appreciated moments of amazement, when most of my attacks would deal 300-400 damage and I suddenly trigger all the Mastery damage on an Apocalyptical shot, dealing 30000 damage instead.
Aiming was difficult at times, especially for AoE spell - too often I would overshoot my spell because it's almost impossible to get the depth of the indicator right when you're on the same elevation as enemy. Or heavens forbid, when the enemy is on the top of a tiny hill.

Movement...
Movement is quick and very responsive, unless you're in the air.
Mind you, there is no jump button in this game, yet I found myself in the air more times than I enjoyed. I enjoy the vertical design in games, when differences in elevation can be used to advantage, as a cover from enemy attacks or to just increase your range or give a vantage point for aiming spells.
The movement is so quick in fact, that you're going 0-60 in 0 seconds flat, which means you need to be very careful. Especially around insta-death ledges. Out of the 22 hours of gameplay, I probably lost good 30 minutes just to those ledges. Gravity is also a bit of a ♥♥♥♥♥, I broke my ankles in a few spots simply as a result of sprinting down some stairs. Instead of walking down the stairs, Dragon would launch from the top stair and fall to the ground below them, which caused the very wonky system of fall damage to kick in, often dealing enough damage to cost me one of the three shields that represent your health.
Be ready for those annoyances.

Enemy variety is relatively rich, but by the end of the game you will start noticing that fights are becoming somewhat of a dice roll. "How many enemies of X type *dice rolling sound*" Monotony of these kinds of fights is broken by an assortment of special modifiers enemies in a predetermined spot get. Modifiers which in themselves appear to be random. It starts simple, enemy has knockdown, enemy has more health, enemy attacks faster. As the game progresses, more and more of these modifiers are unlocked, like rooting touch, volatile which leaves a delayed explosion after death, or chaotic that makes them disappear for a brief moment and move to another spot after taking damage.

And here we have the return of the 5%.
Because the game is fun, surprisingly in-depth mechanically, but sometimes, just often enough to be annoying and worth mentioning, the game becomes... a bit unfair. When I mentioned I lost 30 minutes to falling to my death, that is because after my fifth death like that I started avoiding unnecessary combats that take place near drops. One such combat was a challenge that eventually lead me to a small, elevated arena surrounded by a moat of acid. In attempting to avoid damage, I simply dashed into that moat and it turned out to be an insta-death trigger. It was not fun, so I simply skipped that.
Enemies are not without fault, too. Modifiers are random, and while that can sometimes lead to really fun and engaging combats, there are several enemies programmed with them that can go from bad to 9th circle of Hell with just a bad combo. An enemy with an attack that corrupts you, reducing your speed by 90%!? How about we give that enemy Knockdown and Fast Attack, so that he can keep you knocked down indefinitely, or at least long enough that your shield starts breaking?

All in all, yes, I do recommend giving this game a try.
But be ready for some rage inducing moments of unfair treatment. For me those moments resulted in a game that I wanted and was determined to finish on Battlemage difficulty (second to hardest) but the moments credits rolled and the game offered me New Game Plus - I was dreading doing so.

I wanted to play this back when it was released but never had a powerful enough computer for it. Then i got it in some bundle i think, and forgot about it. I installed it recently to try it out finally.

Eh...

Firing magic feels really clunky the way the character fiddles with the spells and the slight lag because the spells shoot a split second after you press the button. This is really bad, but that's not all...

You're supposed to combine, improve and evolve spells, but the interface for doing so is so convoluted and horrible that it's hard to figure out what actually does what. Nothing of this is explained. And figuring this out is not my idea of fun. Especially when i have to wrestle with the interface. There's an "easy mode" but it just feels insulting and weak. And even then it asks you things "do you want to do X" without explaining what that will do.

And it's grindy. In the short time i've played it, you're supposed to go out of your way to do this big arena fights and really, it gets annoying.

The movement is clunky, idk how they managed that, but it's so bad.

The sotry is... Can't comment on that but, it's so weirdly told and then theres' this character that keeps appearing for like 30 seconds tops to tell you something and then literally disappears... I don't know...

If the combat was fun and responsive i might continue to play it, but i can't deal with bad combat, and a confusing magic system on top of that. Just meh...

Playable, but you really need to be desperate. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you want to, a 90%+ discount is a reasonable.

Lichdom: Battlemage - While the idea of being a powerful battlemage sounds cool, the execution fell flat for me. The gameplay felt incredibly repetitive, and I really mean repetitive. With lots of mindless spell-slinging with not much variety in combat. I remember spending way too much time in the same environments or going from one environment to another to fight the same type of enemy, just moving from zone to zone in one world level, locked there until you clear out all the enemies and then move on to the next zone.

The plot was another letdown. I vaguely recall something about revenge and a dark power, but it didn’t resonate with me at all. The story felt thin and didn’t really pull me in. I wanted to feel connected to my character, but instead, I felt like I was just going through the motions.

Overall, Lichdom left me wanting more, a lot more. If you’re looking for depth in gameplay or an engaging story, you might want to look elsewhere. It was a missed opportunity that could have been so much better.

I remember when this when it was new. I bought it at pre-order and now repurchased it for my Steam Deck. Like Immortals Of Aveum, a rough launch flopped it despite positive hype for what it is. Steam Deckers can enjoy this by using a normal Desktop Mode tool to add a dll thing (wininet). So...

Lichdom: Battlemage, LB, is RPG-lite. LB is linear. LB is traditional. LB is first, and foremost a First Person Shooter. LB is for mature audiences. LB is about magic. LB is a lot like IOA (Immortal Of Aveum) in this way. Like IOA, LB does something no other shooter does, and many will simply miss that. However, LB is AWESOME. It is a pre-"stunts and esports" make the game. It's a single player stride through a target filled theme that cares about making that the big deal. Any sport or stunt is invented by you, the player, in total control of any fun to be had in this experience. It's also simple, like IOA. All the complex stuff of crafting is addendum. I like it: the crafting.

The magic FPS DNA of this game is gold. Have fun! If only the marketplace was warmer to these kind of games. It seems to want it's Testament of Solomon "use iron to ward demons" thing a lot more.

Anyway, this is a good game.

This game is repetitive. The spell combinations are all over the place. The enemies glitch. The writing is cheesy and the characters are rather flat. Story itself is middling at best.

I love it so much. 10/10 recommend if you just want to make magic spells go boom with very little thought behind it.

That's probably one of the worst games I played last time. It's fun to have some magic skill and kill some enemies but to be honest all those magic skills do .... Design is cool but the gameplay is terrible. Bosses are like 10 levels stronger than you so after 20 death it's starting to not challenging but irritating. and story line bored me so much. For me this game is outdated...

They made a game where the focus is on being a mage and then created the most boring and convoluted spell casting system I've ever seen.
Everything is some variation of an orb or a beam, because apparently those are the only two types of magic.....
Every AoE is the same, charge up and place a circle.
Even necromancy was somehow done poorly, you have to decide which mobs you want to "keep." They then despawn and respawn randomly.
And everything has to be charged to cast a "full power" version of it, otherwise you're tickling mobs to death. And for some reason the developers think mages can't jump.
It's not often I find mages in games unfun, but this game about being a battlemage managed to pull it off. I gave it 3 shots.

[*]Convoluted spell upgrade system. I was never able to figure out what bonuses or damage increases they conferred.
[*]No crosshair for the spells. Fire and hope for the best for every spell.
[*]Area of effect spells are useless. Not enough range for a stealth attack setup. Too long to cast, so by the time they hit the enemies are clawing over your face.

Lichdom feels like the kind of game which, if it were the year 2006, you'd rent from a video store for a day then return it, and forget about it for the rest of your life. It's a mediocre and uninspired B-game that fails to do anything interesting. It is flatly impossible to be invested in it. The visuals are derivative and devoid of style. The music is generic and somewhat grating. Even the voice cast is generic, being a who's who of video game voice actors you've heard dozens of times playing the most cookie-cutter one-dimensional video game characters you can imagine. The levels boil down to generic video game location hallways you walk through and occasionally get annoyed by the same combat encounter you just did fifty times on your way to the next boss fight. The only part of the game that approaches originality is the spellmaking system which is itself hamstrung by lack of imagination. There's not "thousands of spells" as they claim, but generously, seven that you can add effects to based on your element and focus. In practice, there's only functionally three things you can do with magic: Instant damage, damage over time, and a disable that combos with damage. Combat is like this: Disable the enemy, hit them with a damage spell, repeat. The only thing the game has that feels a little good to use is the parry which is necessary to use to beat some bosses. All in all, the combat is repetitive and uninteresting, which absolutely cripples the game, as combat is the ONLY thing you do. It's a shame, really.
