After quitting his job in January 2014, Will Dubé and friends brought Jotun to Kickstarter in July of the same year. Raising over $64,000 from 2,299 backers, Jotun was also Greenlit in under a week. The success of the Kickstarter campaign consolidated the team and the vision and allowed us to get additionnal funding from the Canadian Media Fund and the Montreal Inc Foundation. Jotun released on Steam (Windows, Mac and Linux) on September 29th, 2015. Jotun: Valhalla Edition is coming to PS4, XBOX ONE and Wii U this summer. One of the worst games I ever had to play. I did it in its entirety, and it was an unpleasant experience.
Every aspect of this game is bad, it feels empty like an unfinished highschool projet, the bosses are hard but it's the bad kind of "hard". The infuriating kind of "hard". When "hard" means coping with projectiles spawning in an unpredictable manner, learning by heart when they hit you because it does not match the animation, or just praying you don't get the combo that will end your run no matter what. After 2 hours on the last boss, I (for the first time of a gamer life) accepted I would not finish this game. I regret installing it in the first place, giving it 8 hours of my life, and I didn't even pay for it (thank god).

В принципе на 1-2 вечера игрушка пойдет. Подкупает красивым визуалом, музыкой, историей, так и в целом атмосферой, но геймплей в некоторых моментах спорный. Кроме прикольных боссов и быстро проходящихся лок с посредственными загадками этот аспект игры больше не может ничего дать. Даже обычных врагов нет, хотя арсенал способностей достаточный, что бы интересно обыграть стычки с врагами, но увы не завезли. Брала по скидке на сдачу от других игр, да и в итоге не пожалела.

I think its cute. The levels can be really pretty at times and the bossfights are definitely the highlight. The animations really standout in how fluid they can look. I am pretty biased tho as anything involving norse mythology will probably win me over.

Tbh I would recommend it just to hear that sweet sweet icelandic... mmmmmmmm...

This game is AMAZING! As someone who appreciate art and animation, this game is it. Fully committed devs doing great job. The boss fights are beautiful, unique and engaging.[spoiler]my personal favourite, the storm jotun, Hagalaz and the fire jotun, Kaunan[/spoiler]. I love that the camera zoom out while walking to show us the breathtaking scenery. Combat is easy and simple, though still need a quick eye to look at your character, your ability and the environment at the same time during intense situation. The soundtrack is atmospheric. Overall, 8.5/10.

Amazing game, amazing art, music, scenery, everything. The bosses are engaging and intuitive, and then at the end they put a big stinky turd in front of you and tell you to eat it or you can't finish the game.

THe final boss of this game is the least polished, most unfair trashheap I've ever encountered. It's honestly like they hired a guy off Craigslist or Fiverr to make the final boss when compared to the rest of the game.

It's not classically difficult, it's not a get gud darksouls situation, Looking online, the main way to beat the final boss of this game is through exploiting or just getting lucky. What were the devs thinking?

Games come in many shapes and sizes, with varying degrees of challenge and with an almost infinite number of design decisions to be made in their construction. Jotun spectactularly fails in what should be the number one objective of any game - is it fun or enjoyable to play? Poor level design, bad animations, gratuitously random level events and fatuous boss fights are not my idea of a good time.

Game offers few hrs of simple puzzle quests, few satisfying bossfights, lots of exploration. Graphic is beautiful, so is the music and great Norwegian voiceacting.

Flaws:
-Short pause after rolling is annoying as hell.
- slow movement overall
- map in pause menu is kinda weird idea
- Polish version has awful font that not covers Polish special letters :/

The game starts with you walking without knowing where to go, no hints, no context, no narrative, no storytelling, no nothing. Just walk, until you find something that seems to be important. Nothing happens. Keep walking. Fighting mechanics are odd.

La mia opinione non è molto diversa da quella che molti altri hanno: la presentazione è molto curata (nonostante alcuni dei modelli più grandi siano meno dettagliati sui bordi, ma non è un problema per me) e il desiderio di mostrare la mitologia nordica in modo genuino e con l'utilizzo di doppiatori islandesi è encomiabile. Detto ciò, il problema più grosso del gioco è che è lento, le opzioni di movimento arrivano troppo tardi e sono limitate, e la capriola da schivata non ha ciò che serve per compensare come in giochi come Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Considerato comunque che questo è il primo titolo nato da un Kickstarter e da sviluppatori con poca esperienza, è comunque un ottimo risultato, anche se consiglio di aspettare un saldo per prenderlo.

I step into the boots of a fallen Viking, cast into Norse purgatory and tasked with defeating towering Jotuns to earn a place in Valhalla. The premise is simple, almost ritualistic, and it fits the game’s tone perfectly. This is less about frantic action and more about deliberate confrontations, where learning patterns and respecting your enemy matter.

The hand-drawn art is stellar. Characters and animations burst with color. Backgrounds are especially striking, with hilltop vistas and frozen wastelands that feel lifted straight from a mythic tapestry. The presentation is elevated further by strong voice acting delivered in Old Norse, which adds weight and authenticity to every narration and encounter.

Boss fights are hard but fair, demanding patience rather than twitch reflexes. God-gifted powers add tactical depth and are genuinely useful in the right moments, though you can try fighting without them for the sake of achievements. The power-selection interface feels clumsy, because scrolling mid-fight breaks focus more than it should.

My girlfriend, who’s studied Norse mythology, enjoyed watching and reconnecting with runes and lore along the way. That shared sense of myth made the journey even richer. For the 5 hour run it offered enough for me, Jotun is a colorful and visceral offering in the mythological journey.

Jotun: Valhalla Edition is one of the most visually stunning games I have ever seen. The hand-drawn art is breathtaking, the scale of the bosses is awe-inspiring, and the authentic Icelandic voice acting creates an atmosphere that is second to none. Unfortunately, once you stop staring at the scenery and actually start playing, the experience falls apart.

The Frustrations:
Glacial Pacing: There is no sprint button. You will spend roughly 70% of your time slowly walking across massive, beautiful, and completely empty levels just to find a single power-up or switch. It feels less like an epic journey and more like a tedious commute.

Clunky Combat: Your character, Thora, moves like she’s wading through honey. The heavy attack has such a massive wind-up that it’s often unusable, and the dodge lacks the responsiveness needed for a game that demands precision.

Difficulty Whiplash: The game alternates between brain-dead simple exploration and punishingly difficult boss fights. The bosses aren't hard because of complex mechanics; they’re hard because they are sponges with massive hitboxes and telegraphed attacks that turn every fight into a repetitive test of patience rather than skill.

The "Lost" Factor: The in-game map is intentionally obscure and doesn't show your location. While "immersive" in theory, in practice it just leads to more backtracking through those empty, slow-walking corridors.

If you want to appreciate the art, watch a "No Commentary" playthrough on YouTube. As a game, it’s a slog that doesn't respect the player's time.

A jogabilidade é uma merda e não tem um pingo de imersão. Conquista o carisma por se basear na mitologia nórdica e ser um boss rush contra jotuns, mas é uma merda completa ter que esperar mil anos para carregar um golpe simples de machado, haver muita poluição na tela e a personagem se movimentar igual uma lesma, fora o enquadramento das arenas, o qual muitas vezes perco meu personagem de vista e mal vejo quando tomo algum dano. Jogo hediondo, ganha apenas pelos gráficos, mas é não há o menor divertimento no estresse que passa nele.

I personally didn't like the art direction, combat mechanics, game design, and level design. You could say... that taste is subjective, because for me it lacks a little bit of everything. It's not for me.

시작부터 엔딩까지 1세트로 3세트정도 있어야 될거 같은데, 그냥 끝나버리네요...
굳이 업적채워야되나 싶습니다. 사과먹자고 다시 하기엔, 너무 답답하고 진엔딩이나 보스러쉬말고 컨텐츠 더 없는거 같네요.
할인해서 2500원이라 생각해도 아쉽네요.
지도보는거 직관적이지 않고 동서남북 다르고 이동기도 답답하네요.
그냥 강타 강화하는 스킬쓰고 무지성으로 박으니까 보스전들 그냥그냥 깨지네요....

Müzikleri ise gayet iyiydi..Kesinlikle temalara inanılmaz uyan yer yer zarif yer yer de kan pompalatan cinstendi..Ve boss savaşları..Oyunun genel olarak olayı boss savaşlarıydı diyebilirim..Ben genel olarak 2 tanesine bayıldığımı söyleyebilirim..Özellikle Kaunan bossuna..Onun dışında Level tasarımları biraz kafa karıştırıcı olsa da gayet iyiydi orada da çok bir sıkıntı yok. I giochi Thunder Lotus hanno un elemento che comunque li salva praticamente sempre: la grafica. Quella di Jotun è bellissima, soprattutto nelle animazioni dei boss che sono splendide e creative.

Ho giocato prima Sundered di questo, e lì il combat system era imperfetto ma accettabile, ma qui è chiaramente più acerbo. Bisogna prendere confidenza coi suoi tempi non molto reattivi, è basato più sulla precisione del tempismo che sul riflesso. Questo non è necessariamente un problema ma Jotun sembra sempre farti combattere in punta di fioretto (ascia nonostante), con questi attacchi semplici e ordinati ma non così divertenti e praticamente mai furiosi come forse uno scenario vichingo vorrebbe.

Buon prodotto in ogni caso, non dura molto e va bene così. C'è sicuramente di meglio.

I've been a huge fan of the other Thunder Lotus titles I've touched, and Jotun: Valhalla Edition's quality stands neatly in line with the rest, especially considering it is their debut game.

The combat is immensely satisfying and chunky: Powerful and yet agonizingly slow attack windups generate an uninterrupted stream of thrilling moments and a feeling of nervous awe as you engage staggeringly huge enemies in melee combat. If your massive attacks land, they can interrupt some enemy attacks, or stagger the bosses into vulnerable states, and thankfully you can always roll out of if you get overwhelmed, which will happen often without you acquiring the Power of the Gods. Very similar to Sundered: Eldritch edition, Thunder Lotus have mixed particularly addicting and charming boss design, massive aoe attacks, and spawns of huge enemy hordes, seemingly with ease. I personally can't help but replay the fights just to rewatch the animations, and maybe swing that axe a little faster, more efficiently, even gracefully the next time.

My gripes are limited: The dash attack is amazing, and gives you huge thrusting reach at a moment's notice, but it sadly only articulates towards the direction you roll.
Both the light and heavy attack should be bound to R1 and R2
Powers could be swapped with the D-pad. It's not efficient whatsoever that power swapping currently commandeers all 4 shoulder buttons. It's atrocious.

While their newer games like Spiritfarer are more fluid, this game proudly displays simple mechanics with surprising vibrancy, and some beautiful voice work compels you to explore the world and story as much as possible. This game needs a DLC badly; it's too good and I need more!

I'm dropping Jotun, not because it's a bad game... However, because it's just not a game for me I realized something in my 3 hours of playing and once I realized this it made the game a chore more than something fun. The bosses (the two I fought) are complex and will require some skill. If I could improve the mechanics of this game I'd do one of the three: Add a run button, remove the dodge roll pause effect, or lower the time on the heavy attack by .5 seconds. One of those three would fix my game play issues perfectly. As it stands now bosses absolutely take advantage that you're slow, the dodge roll pause makes it so dodging makes you a vulnerable target when using it, and the heavy attack is asking bosses to just kill you. If one of these three things were fixed the game would be challenging but not seem unfair at points. Over all beautiful and interesting completely wroth the $15 for full price and definitely worth the $2.24 it is now especially if you're a fan of souls like.

Lo mejor de este juego son sin duda las peleas, para cada jefe tienes alguna mecánica nueva a la que adaptarte además de algún poder divino.
Para llegar a los jefes estas obligado a explorar zonas a forma de laberinto/puzle donde aprenderás algunas mecánicas que parecen solo de la zona, pero que más tarde el jefe usara contra ti, por lo que explorar ayuda no solo a encontrar al jefe sino a poder enfrentarlo con más conocimiento.
Es un juego corto de unas 6 horas con pelea muy divertidas e interesantes y con un apartado estético increíble y original.

I love ALMOST everything the game offered.

The puzzle solving is fun, the gimmicks in how you can take down a boss is great...

Except for the last one...
They threw everything out after giving you ways to stagger a boss, hit their weak points or use their skills to hurt themselves...
After the 3rd try I realized i should just focus on brawling him down with speed boost and lighting hammer, summon illusions for the projectiles and shield up if you ran out or to negate damage from his summons, it was rather a simple final boss...

Nevertheless it is a good game!

Also Thora's attacks is simple, and its enough, since I think the main highlight for me was the story telling, the puzzles and boss types.

El juego es precioso a nivel visual, pero bastante aburrido. Lo he dejado después de vencer a tres jefes porque el juego no tiene nada de acción. Básicamente es mover a un vikingo recorriendo por un escenario hasta que llegas a un boss con una cantidad ingente de vida.

El movimiento del prota es bastante lento y tosco, y los dos golpes que tiene no son nada ágiles lo que hace que enfrentarte a los bosses sea muy aburrido.

Aun así, animo a la gente que lo pruebe y juzgue por sí mismo.

Jotun: Valhalla Edition is a hand-drawn love letter to Norse mythology that does not pull its punches. This game is difficult, and that is its core identity.

You play as Thora, and you feel every bit the underdog facing the colossal Jotun. These boss battles are the main event, and they are epic, pattern-heavy tests of patience and skill. You will die, learn the attack tells, and die again until you finally emerge victorious. The satisfaction from defeating a Jotun is immense, but be warned: this is not a casual hack-and-slash.

The exploration in the sprawling levels offers a breather, though even there you'll face environmental puzzles and smaller foes.

Performance on Steam Deck (OLED): Flawless. It ran perfectly from a Micro SD card, and the gorgeous art truly shines on the OLED screen.

I finished the main story—a rewarding challenge—but didn't tackle the even fiercer Valhalla Mode. If you enjoy tough, boss-focused games and can appreciate a stunning art style, Jotun is a worthy challenge. If you get easily frustrated, however, tread carefully.

The "difficult" tag is there for a reason. OMG the times I died in this game...
The combat is very particular, and you need to time enemy attacks really carefully.
The boss design is super cool, both visually (thanks in part to the Norse mythology) and gameplay-wise.
It is a nice game and you will love it, after hating it (and dying, a lot)

[h1]Visuals aren't everything[/h1]

The art is amazing. The soundtrack hits just right. The native Icelandic spoken within the game is such a nice touch. The scenery is beautiful and diverse and my god do they present Norse mythology so well.

Not only is the depiction of Jotunns really creative, but it presents the idea of different realms so elegantly. Each Jotunn is tied to their respective realm, and before you get to fight said Jotunn, the game will give you a bit of your character's backstory, whilst briefly describing whichever realm you're currently in.

All of this is great, but the game severely lacks when it comes to gameplay.

While the exploring and puzzle bits of the game you do before each boss fight are... serviceable at best, the main aspect of the game, that being the bosses, are just not fun to fight for the most part. Some bosses could greatly benefit from the game having a better movement/combat system. The biggest problem with the movement, is that it's unbelievably slow. the combat isn't much different. It's slow and generally unsatisfying. While performing a regular attack, you can't move for about 0.5 seconds and if you charge your attack up, you won't be able to move for a good 2-3 seconds. Neither the movement nor the combat feels fun to engage with. If the game had overall faster movement and a combat system where your movement speed decreases whilst attacking rather than coming to a complete halt, then i'd argue that the game would be infinitely more fun, and could potentially turn my negative review into a positive one.

It's such a shame too, because most of the bosses have fun gimmicks and the passion that was put into this game is very evident. But despite that, I just can't recommend this game. The controls make it way too frustrating and in a game that's (for the most part) about killing bosses? That's a pretty big dealbreaker.

I love games where the main enemies are bosses, it's one of my favorite genres and this one isn't bad when it comes to that.

Saying that though, this game has to have had the absolute WORST final boss I've ever experienced in any game, it's genuinely terrible and I don't understand how they saw it and thought it was an okay fight. It's incredibly boring and the boss just runs from you for the majority of it.

Despite that though, the other bosses for the most part were pretty fun and not too difficult.
The art is also pretty to look at, and the voice acting was phenomenal.

Overall, I don't think it's a mistake to play this game, I found it fun, I just think it's inexcusable for a final boss to be as bad as the one in this game was.

Very fun game and the visual are cool. The bosses are very well made each being hard and fun to fight. Only complaint is the combat is very slow/sluggish but I didn't mind that much since it was still fun to play. Would recommend but maybe buy it on sale since it was a $1 and its kinda quick to play (my hours are because I left the game running on my laptop when I closed it- game take bout 5 hrs really)

I enjoyed Jotun "Valhalla Edition" overall. The hand drawn art and Norse mythology themes are beautiful, and the boss fights feel epic in scale. The combat can be a bit clunky and sometimes frustrating during harder fights. It is a solid experience for anyone who likes atmospheric storytelling and challenging battles, but I would only buy it on sale.

Trying to get 100% completion on the achievements has been an effort in pure madness.

I don't understand how people can complain about games like this. Luckily, I never believe reviews. It's not a perfect game; the movements are quite stiff and slow, but you get used to it after a while, and it all makes the fights even more challenging.
The voice acting, music, and art are wonderful! It was amazing to delve into Norse mythology. I recommend it to everyone for a few hours of excellent art gazing.

Что ты, кто ты? Тебе нормально не скажут, просто сражайся с боссами. Как играть - тебе тоже не объяснят. Ни про перекат, ни про смену способности и её использование. Заходи в настройки, смотри там. Также и надо, верно?
Навигация - никакая. Нету отображения где ты. Что за объекты на карте - неизвестно. В итоге, ты несколько минут бегаешь, пытаясь понять, этот огромный камень это тот самый камень или другой камень. А потом осознаёшь, что ориентирование по карте тебе вовсе не нужно, ибо геймплей вообще не в этом.
Боёвка и сама игра - безумно медленная. Чтобы играть в неё, я должен наслаждаться процессом, но единственное, что мне хочется, это нажать кнопку ускорения. Буквально - делают всё, чтобы искусственно продлить игру, делая из максимум игры на час - трёх часовую.
Идиотские хитбоксы, где ты сражаешься либо в боссе, либо не достаёшь до него атакой. Причём я всё понимаю, не получилось сделать нормальные отростки. Но зачем это делать первым боссом?..

В общем, покупать только при -90%, если не больше, и то, если вас устраивает замедленный геймплей.
Из плюсов могу выделить только механики врагов, или других инородных предметов, что используются перед боссом, что будет их использовать. И головоломки, которые.. В других играх будут если не поинтереснее, то как минимум с более отзывчивым и приятным управлением. Буквально игра, в которую не играли сами разрабы, раз умудрились такое выпустить.

-El juego es un 7.0 es muy bonito, tiene buena musica desconozco sobre el tema de idioma pero si en verdad es algun tipo de idioma nordico esta increible para la inmersion, todo eso lo convierte en algo muy bueno sin embargo falla en el control falla en la sensacion que transmite ala hora de pulsar los botones es raro siento que hay un tiempo casi imperseptible entre lo que quiero que haga el pj y lo que hace y aunque como dije es casi nulo es lo suficientemente notorio para que sea incomodo de jugar. Desconozco si es por animacion o por algun fallo en la programacion

Pretty game, but you play as a slug in the shape of a woman and the levels are mind numbing. I can only recommend it if you're into the Norse mythology theme.
And, because your mental wellbeing is important, if you do get to the final boss, you can hit the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ homing spears instead of failing miserably trying to dodge them.
