I had a really outstanding time with this game, its so particular and unique in its gameplay that i felt compelled to get into it and do a full playthrough. I guess its pretty niche and unpopular and i dont even know how i managed to stumble upon it.
A majority of the playtime youre turning book pages and reading a ton of text, that felt like a fresh breeze to me on a market full with the same content and design again and again. Occasionally you get into turn based strategical fights that are animated in a very impressive and epic way and i love the vibe that both the world and levels as well as the enemy models display. Especially bigger enemys really intimidated me in the first few encounters which is so cool!
Being a battlemage theres a ton of cool stuff like Telekinesis and an additional legendary sword that you can use for serious special attacks every once in a while. I love the fighting expertise of the Lone Wolf!
The plot is definitely solid, the world feels kind of unique and particular and i quickly got into its very own atmosphere. I gotta say its on the brink of genericness as it is clearly inspired by stuff like Tolkien and Elder Scrolls but there is just enough passion and love in there that i got immersed pretty well. Im a HUGE fan of the soundtrack, there arent really that many tracks and yeah it does get repetetive but the quality of the tracks really breath life into this whole thing, its super fitting. When youre reading you feel a super melancholic and lonely tone, in a battle its switching to epic trumpets. Good stuff! All in all of course its also a decision based game that relies on abilities that you selected in the beginning of the game, like DND and you have many ways to go into fight encounters with that as well and gain different small adventages and that was quite interesting to me.
Of course there are negative points to this game, actually very serious ones that made me uninstall twice but i quickly returned to play the day after anyways. The progression is very unsatisfying, there is some stuff to loot and equip like weapons, shields and accessories but pretty much nothing really changes your experience ever, or your moves in combat. Not really any special effects or debuffs that you receive from gearing and there is also no armor. You always look the same, the stats dont really mean much too as the only thing that you really feel is an increase in numbers of HP, stamina and Mana. Furthermore there are only like 6 enemy variants in the entire game that you fight again and again, in sometimes very stretchy unbelievable plot situations and it does get very tedious here and there. Glad the combat catched me in that. Also there are scripted moments in which a boss moves first in the encounter and oneshotted my fully maxed character on full health multiple reloads in a row on normal difficulty which frustrated me a ton!
All in all its definitely a special game, a very charming oldschool title that just feels like that sweet nostalgia that RPG fans crave for nowadays. In fact it made me overlook the serious issues this game has but i gotta say i had a really good time all in all and i do recommend getting into it.
Furthermore the game motivated me to order some of the first Lone Wolf books to get into them as well and i believe that you may have a really rich experience diving into this worlds lore and atmosphere!
I had Joe Dever's Lone Wolf HD Remastered sitting in my library collecting dust for years. One of those games you grab on sale and forget about while everyone else is busy playing the latest flashy AAA release. I felt like trying something different for once. Something that wasn’t chasing trends.
The game is based on the universe created by Joe Dever, who started as a fantasy writer back in the 80s with interactive gamebooks and later saw his work evolve into video games. From flipping pages and making choices in a book to clicking your decisions on a screen — same spirit, modern format.
At first, I honestly thought it would be something simple. Maybe souls-like, maybe more action-focused. I was completely wrong. It turned out to be a turn-based RPG. Something I’ve basically never played before. The closest thing I ever touched was XCOM: The Bureau: Declassified, and that’s not even the same style. Here, everything is slower, more tactical, more deliberate.
What hooked me wasn’t the combat at first — it was the atmosphere. The soundtrack has that dark heroic tone that pulls you in. The character design feels classic but detailed. You can tell there’s respect for the original material.
Now the story… I’ll be honest. I didn’t understand much of it. Reading isn’t really my strong point, and this game is basically reading and choosing. The developers didn’t rely heavily on cinematic cutscenes explaining every dialogue, so I skipped a lot of pages just to get to the decision points. And that’s where the real strength of the game shows.
The choices actually matter. And I don’t mean in a superficial way. Depending on your skills, you can approach situations with stealth, use your wolf companion, tap into psychic Kai powers, or just go in with your sword. Outcomes vary. You can succeed, fail, get partially injured, leave enemies bleeding, or even trigger different scenarios depending on your path. That part felt solid and real.
At first I just wanted action. But then I realized that if you don’t manage your inventory properly during the story menus, the next fight can hit you hard. Damaged weapons, low vigor, reduced health, little Kai energy — and suddenly you’re paying for your impatience. It’s not a game you can rush blindly.
One technical detail that genuinely surprised me: full ultrawide monitor support out of the box. No external programs, no weird fixes. It just works. In today’s PC world, that’s something I appreciate.
In the end, it reminded me of other underrated titles with strong identity, like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, The Last Oricru, Bound by Flame, and Lords of the Fallen. Games that may not dominate headlines, but have personality.
I picked it up with low expectations and ended up genuinely surprised. It’s not for everyone. If you don’t like reading, you’ll struggle. But if you accept that every decision carries weight, it offers a different kind of experience — one that feels more old-school, more intentional. And sometimes, stepping away from the noise of mainstream gaming is exactly what you need.
