Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is a genuinely impressive little Metroidvania that I'd been sleeping on for way too long — the art style by Michel Gagné is unlike anything else I've played, with that striking black-and-shadow aesthetic giving every creature and environment an eerie, almost macabre beauty. Flying around as a tiny UFO instead of a humanoid character feels fresh, and steadily accumulating tools like the buzzsaw and grappling claw kept the exploration rewarding. The puzzles never frustrated me, the boss fights have satisfying patterns to learn, and the whole thing wraps up in a tight 6-8 hours before it ever overstays its welcome. My only gripe is that backtracking to locked gates without fast travel gets a bit tedious, and the rewards for doing so — mostly concept art and lore clips — feel underwhelming. Still, if you can catch it on sale and enjoy Metroidvania-style games, this is an easy recommendation.

A simplistic, physics-based twin-stick Metroivdania, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet holds up remarkably well for a 14-year-old indie-ish title.

Many of the cutscenes failed to run on my Steam Deck (instead displaying a placeholder image) but they total about three minutes of footage and are far from necessary to understand or complete the game.

The controls are tight, gameplay is varied, and boss battles are inventive but not all that challenging.

I remember playing this game a long while ago, and forgot about it, until I suddenly had a realization that I played some sort of UFO Metroidvania in the past. While my feelings are not as positive as they once were, this is still a solid short metroidvania~esque game where you play as an UFO that has to destroy a plague that has infested a planet.

I first purchased this game back on the days of xbox360. The graphics were gorgeous then and still is now even today! It constantly goes on sale for $3-$5 and i was happy with it back when I paid $15 for it on the xbox 360! It has very fluid play, has unique art style, cool mechanics for the upgrades on your ship and has neat environments to explore. Highly recommend if youre a fan for metroid-esk games!

This was a really good Metroidvania where you control a flying saucer and get all sorts of cool upgrades. The environment, abilities, and enemies all work very well together...and some minor puzzling even works your brain here and there just a bit, but nothing so much you would need a guide for. Took me 8 hrs to finish, but it was a very high quality experience. I would recommend this over most of the more marketed copy and paste AAA stuff that comes out these days. This is a game that knows what it is, sets out to do it, and masterfully sticks the landing.

This game sat unplayed on my Steam account for 13 years and I'm now completely ashamed of that fact. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is an absolute gem in the Metroidvania genre! The level design feels concise and direct; despite there being no fast-travel option I never felt like I was constantly backtracking (although I could imagine going for all collectibles may be a slog). The way the difficulty ramped up was a perfectly designed incline. Please check this out if you're looking for a shorter Metroidvania with great controls, visuals and level design!

I absolutely love this game! there's nothing much to expect from the story, but with its adequate difficulty, cute art style, very solid level design, and smooth gameplay/physics, it deserves every metroid-like enjoyers' attention. as a former QA analyst, I'd like to also give props to the QA team, since it looks like they were able to mitigate too many things that could go wrong, especially at the last two stages.

couple of things for future players that struggle with certain areas (SPOILERS, if you will):
- if you mistakenly drop a crystal or a block (or really any object), and can't find it again, simply restart the game from the last checkpoint instead of trying to find the object. had this a few times, and when an object is lost, it's lost for good. trust me.
- ice stage was by far the most frustrating one, merely due to a simple fact that's easy to miss: keep in mind that crystals have asymmetrical shapes, so the side that you place the crystal inside their slots does matter when reflecting the light appropriately.

Пригадаймо ті часи, коли трава була зеленішою, а піратки були популярнішими за ліцензійні! ) Розповім про Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet – гру яку я колись давно пройшов завантаживши черговий рипак на трекері, а вже згодом купив тут в Стім, але майже не грав) До речі, у 2011 році гра була ексклюзивом для Xbox 360. Правда, ненадовго, на радість ПК-панству.

Гемплейно – це по суті класична метроідванія, але з власною специфікою, бо тут ми керуємо літаючою тарілкою, в якій знаходиться житель планети, що протистоїть невідомим загарбникам, що як пліснява загадили планету нашого героя. Тож досліджуємо великі, красиві локації, які змінюють свій стиль, зберігаючи при цьому загальну атмосферу. Ну і вирішуємо пазли, яких тут вистачає. Вони не надто складні, треба ефективно використовувати всілякі гаджети, які чіпляються до нашого корабля перетворюючи його на мультитул. Ну і звичайно приймаємо участь у бійках з ворогами, включно із босами!

Загалом, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet – це такий собі приємний візуально коктейль з дослідження, екшену та пазлів. Якщо любите метроідванії і бажання просто розслабитися, літаючи по дивних світах, то раджу.
Навіть якщо ви вже проходили її колись давно на "альтернативній" версії як я, можливо, вдруге ви нарешті дійдете до кінця... або просто отримаєте ще одну порцію задоволення від початку гри, як знов таки я! 😉
Бачу гра на знижках долар коштує! Беріть, воно варто на 100%.

Joguei esse jogo até a dungeon de gelo quando eu era criança (meados de 2013) quando deram esse jogo de graça na Xbox Live. Depois de entrar no mundo do Metroidvania esse fevereiro de 2025 com Hollow Knight, decidi revisitar (e dessa vez zerar) ITSP. O jogo tem uma estética e conceito bem legais e puzzles rápidos e interessantes de resolver (tirando alguns como o dos cristais com laser e aquela etapa do começo do jogo com a broca com anteninhas removíveis secretas, aquilo foi ultra não intuitivo). Boss fights são fáceis no geral, mas desafiantes o suficiente pra um jogo leve como esse. Senti falta de uma trilha sonora para as lutas e para as dungeons, o jogo é silencioso demais. Ótimo jogo pra começar e terminar em uma tarde. Recomendo.

I'm not the biggest twin stick shooter fan so my opinion on this game may be a bit skewed but i found this game to be a bit boring tbh. I love platformers and especially metroidvania's but if you take away the platforming by having a floating player character the level design dumbs down a LOT. They tried to do some fun gimmicks to compensate for this but not enough as this is hard to do. It's not impossible though, as Pronty has shown but in this case it didn't manage to captivate me in the same way. The very basic art style doesn't help with this as each area felt the same, despite the different colour pallete. I mean the game looks cool, but it doesn't maintain a sense of wonder throughout as everything becomes sort of a blur. Especially the backgrounds failed to speak to the imagination, with nothing really giving you the impression that this is an insanely twisted planet.

There's only a small amount of storytelling going on here, and most of it is in the inital exposition dump. The intro cinematic sets the tone and gives some intrigue but not enough in my opinion. Now i do have to note that this game is old, very old, which should be kept in mind when reviewing it. However i would not recommend it in the current day, whereas i may have back when it released. It has some Limbo vibes, which came before it but none of the emotional inpact or genious gameplay that game had. As far as the metroidvania side of things goes, it has some unique ideas but once again the floating controls mean that a lot of the gameplay depth typically found in a platformer is lost. The bosses were very unique at least and if you don't mind this kind of twin stick gameplay it's worth playing for those, otherwise not worth the time & money in my opinion.

Interesting and fun game where you play as a flying saucer. The graphics and the environment are beautiful. You feel like exploring every corner and trick that the twisted planet throws at you. The saucer's upgrades and powerups unlock new possibilites as you go. There's no dialog or text so it can be a bit confusing at first, but it works perfectly as it is.

A nice little metroidvania. Movement is incredibly smooth and satisfying, and there's just enough unlockables to keep you enticed until the end. I highly suggest you 100% this in your first go. Not much for replayability, but very rewarding in a single playthrough.

not metroidvania, adventure, or exploration. This game starts strong with these elements, but after the first zone it gives up on all of those elements and becomes a walking-simulator with nice environments but zero challenge except for a periodic boss fight. The powerups aren't useful: you improve your blaster by collecting 1, 3, and then 5 powerups, yet your blaster isn't your main weapon in many situations. Other collectibles have zero gameplay: art and videos. The game ends on a whimper, I finished and thought I must have done something wrong. This game looks great, and the controls are pretty tight, however.

My theory: this game started with the right idea and a lot of ambition but the devs got squeezed by the publisher and just had to get something out. The powerups, lack of interesting collectibles, and linearity all point to this. Even the final boss takes place in the starting zone. Lots of good ideas here, and if you want to support the devs or give it a try for the style, go for it. overall I can't recommend it.

The 2D realtime rendered vector art graphics hold up very well 12-13 years after release, it looks so crisp at 1080p and probably even better in 4K. Very fun little game, played it a lot on the Xbox 360. I know they would never, but I think they should make a sequel. =]

Cool little mix between a shooter and a metroidvania with quite an amazing art style. It's a bit too linear and doesn't go deep into your typical metroidvania mechanics but that's ok, means that's a bit more relaxing, however the shooting part can still be stressfull if you dont have good reflexes like... me :D

Looks great, pretty fun Metroidvania.

The camera seems to do the opposite of what I wanted at any given time, and has a horrible habit of zooming in to the point where you can't see your surroundings. Physics are pretty janky as well.

As far as the gameplay goes, it's an OK Metroidvania. None of the upgrades seemed all that satisfying, and boss fights always felt anticlimactic.

This is one of the rare in-between games where I enjoyed my time with the game, but not sure I'd care enough to buy it again if given a do over.

"Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet" is a charming, if not lightweight, Metroidvania with a minimalist but interesting art style. You play as a little guy in a little ship and you traverse through 5 biomes to unlock new weapons, abilities, upgrades, you kinda know the drill.

It doesn't exactly reinvent the genre, or do anything particularly mind-blowing, but it's a decent 2012-era Xbox Live Arcade game with some creepy-cute art and moderately engaging gameplay. A good "I'm home sick over the weekend" game. A slight thumbs up.

Pros:
- Hard not to like your main character. He's a little guy in a little ship!
- Lots of upgrades (but you'll only really use 3 or 4 on the regular).
- Map is very clear about where to go
- The music is by operatic death metal band Dimmu Borgir? How? Why?

Cons:
- No fast travel means there's way too much time wasted backtracking.
- Bosses aren't exactly hard, but can be frustrating due to weird hitboxes.
- Enemies respawn way too fast and fighting them can be repetitive.
- Certain upgrades are a PITA to get, I will wage holy war on that stupid ocean current loop thing.
- Dead multiplayer

probably my favorite metroidvania, its such a wholly unique experience compared to any other game ive played. all the different weapon types are super fun to use, exploring is a ton of fun, and the art style is SO unbelievably cool. super great stuff, i highly recommend this. only downside id say is that the multiplayer servers are kinda dead, so if you wanted to play shadow hunters or lantern run, you might have to stick to getting some friends together or local multiplayer.

I felt extremely lucky to have found this game and scored it on sale. I remember playing a trial for it back on the xbox arcade, and over a decade later this little gem holds up incredibly well.
The visuals and ambiance are a treat for the eyes and ears; each area of the world has a unique feel and blend very well together. Every part is a beautiful work of art, and I had to keep myself from screenshotting all the time. The bosses provided an interesting and clever challenge that didn't overstay their welcome. Though I found some parts to be difficult, such is expected from this genre. I found myself having fun backtracking and searching for secrets once I got more abilities. Though this game wasn't very long, it was very a enjoyable one and I would love more of it!

This is a game I come back and play again every few years. It's not much but it hits the Metroidvania creep. The gripes I have with it overall are minor. It would flow better if you could use custom hotkeys instead of only being able to use the numbers with how many different tools you have by the end of the game. However, the exploration, the visuals, and the puzzle-y combat keep the game entertaining from start to finish. One of my absolute favorites of the genre.

Es un juego de Aventura en 2D de 2-3 horas de duracion, muy bueno, hermosos graficos, musica, jugabilidad, sonidos, ambientacion, diseño de personajes recontra mutantes fantastico, muy bien lograda la atmosfera alienigenoide.

Basicamente sos una nave que ataca a un planeta junto con otras naves que tambien hacen lo mismo y al enfrentarte a varios bosses (y llegar al final) matas a todos basicamente y asi colonizas el planeta (creo, no tiene historia basicamente pero te da a entender eso).

Mecanicas: tu nave tiene un gancho Para agarrar o agarrarse, tiene rayo LASER (rebotador en paredes) para matar enemigos, misil y ametralladora para matar enemigos (el misil se usa para abrir algunas compuertas tambien)
Tenes Sierra para cortar piedras y avanzar (tambien matar enemigos)
y un iman que te sirve para aferrarte a cosas o mover cosas.

9/10 - excelente titulo, muy buena progresion, le falta historia y mas duracion, ademas de que no tiene ecromos, imperdonable en un titulo de microsoft...

About 6 hours to finish it (so quite short), but truly a little jewel of a game. The metroidvania elements are well designed, the fighting system and the puzzles are well balanced and the controls are just great.

But the best part is of course the atmosphere given by this awesomly dark and tortured art design.

Plus it has music made by Dimmu Borgir.

Unfortunately, the visual style doesn't make up for how frustrating this is to play. Backtracking with respawning enemies. Dull combat which feels like a chore. the weapon interface is incredibly clunky - you spend more time sorting that out than playing.

What a blast of a game!:

PROS: The art-style is phenomenal! Puzzles were definitely a great challenge but not impossible to solve. Soundtrack had an old-school cartoons vibe that went well with each level. Environments were fun to explore for the amazing secrets. Action for a 2D-puzzle game was really nice.

CONS: I still don't understand who did I actually play as or what was the deal of the planet parasite. I guess I would only like more origin story.

CONCLUSION: This has to be one of the best 2D-puzzle game I have ever played. It was totally worth the purchase when discounted, because it costed me less then a kebab and I had a great time playing this underrated gem!
