This is a great retro-inspired metroidvania that borrows a lot from Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2. But does so fairly competently and with a little extra flavor. The morality system and side quests were pretty cool, but the strictness and crypticness of it does make for a lot of frustration when you find out your playthrough is cut short because you didn't do things perfectly to how the game's invisible metrics wanted you to.

The music and graphics are great, I loved the gorey details and the impact of the combat. Though it did feel a little lacking in combat options. I was surprised to NOT see any ranged attacks for the main character. The spells didn't really make up for it since they don't really have much combat use.

What I appreciate most about the game is the classic difficulty mode and the lives system, supported by the instant death pits (even if a few cases of them were a bit frustrating). It takes balls to do that these days it seems and in a metroidvania its very rare to see dangerous terrain like this. So i really enjoyed that aspect. The game actually has some fairly challenging platforming sections.

But this does lead me to my biggest complain, the game is still pretty damn easy. It suffers from the curse of the modern indie metroidvania - pathetically simple and easy enemies. Not only that but the game REALLY loves to reuse enemies FOR THE ENTIRE GAME. So get comfortable killing the same small pool of enemies for 7 hours. The game doesn't technically have low enemy variety, it just chooses to use the same enemies the entire time, only the dungeons feature unique enemies, and for the most part they are reskins with slightly tougher behavior. This is a shame and was a big disappointment.

This problem persists with the bosses as well. I beat every single boss in the game except one on my first try. That shouldn't happen for a retro-inspired platformer. They were too simple, far too generous with hitboxes and timings, and had lengthy recovery between attacks, with the one exception (where i died due to falling in an instant death pit during the boss fight). This to me is the biggest issue I have with the game and it makes playing through the game again a bit less exciting. (a hard mode would have been nice, but would have required more craftsmanship in enemy design)

I am aware there is a lot of hidden content due to the different endings you can get and some unlockable stuff but as I mentioned in my opening statement, it's VERY cryptic. The morality system is completely hidden and the choices you are given during the game have ambiguous outcomes. In order to get the true ending with the true final boss you have to have made the 100% perfect choice every single time, which you simply won't do without a guide.

Lastly I do want to mention the lack of variable-height jumping is a bit of a problem. It will get you killed and it does make the platforming sections significantly more annoying and difficult than it really has to be. it also feels bad in combat since the game puts flying enemies EVERYWHERE, you will have to do this awkward high jump every single time to hit an enemy that's slightly above you, timing your attack just right to actually hit them. Luckily they did give us full air control, which makes the lack of variable-height so strange. It's like half modern half retro. Better to pick one and commit the game's design to it then have this kind of clunky jumping physics for a modern metroidvania.

Overall i do recommend playing this, but get it on sale because prices for short indie games have sky rocketed as of writing this. And it's getting out of hand when 3-6 hour long campaigns for 8-bit games is costing $25+ dollars now. The game is fun and will keep you invested till the end which is also quite rare these days. But it has it's flaws and sadly doesn't live up to what could have been it's full potential due to a few significant issues as listed above.

If you are looking for a fantastical and kid friendly game, TURN BACK.

However, if you like gore, gore, gore, and more gore, if you like vanias, if you like search action, if you like free will of making choices that make you good or evil, this game is for you. Plenty of themes of both Christian and Satanic vibes, depending on the route you take. Be wary that this game is not for the faint of heart. There's good difficulty in this game for those first time players. And for those revisiting and know games of the search action genre, (metroidvanias) plenty of references for you to enjoy that I will not spoil. Again, very good game, glad to see this game realized versus its flash predecessor.

Infernax has something special going for it. Aiming to be a loving tribute to Simon's Quest is a noble endeavor indeed, with elements from other NES classics such as Zelda 2 sprinkled in for good measure. The end result, though, is a bit meandering and honestly it's an overall mediocre game in the overcrowded modern indie sphere.

Duke Alcidor returns to his lands after a Crusade only to discover that they are ravaged from demons and assorted creatures of the night. It's up to him to save his dukedom or condemn it entirely. While the premise is barebones and the writing is pretty basic, Infernax audaciously implements a morality system, with different choices to make (mostly during side quests) that grant positive or negative morality points. It's not just for flavour, as some questlines and even some spells you can obtain change according to your alignment. This is a really, really cool idea, but like many others with this game it's almost entirely offset by the fact that it is too short and repetitive to warrant another playthrough. Devs would have better off just making a longer, more varied game instead of bothering with a neat concept that feels like "more content with extra steps".

The gameplay is modeled after Simon's Quest, with less cryptic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and more combat and mechanical challenges. Alcidor feels good to control, certainly better than good old Simon, and moving about and bashing monsters with a mace feels good... initially. The more you play, the more Alcidor's slow walk speed becomes a slog. Actually getting to places is inconvenient, and you have to wait until almost halfway through the game to get the Warp spell (which is always unusable where it would be needed most). There is gratuitous backtracking in going back and forth for quests, while exploration is exceptionally linear. There is a rigid progression of skills that strictly open the way to the next castle to conquer; the skills themselves are fine, though they feel like standard fare with extra steps (again! Example: no double jump, but there is a mace swing that propels you upwards, which is more involved to perform and is basically useless as an actual attack. So yeah, double jump with weird caveats). The equivalent of the "dash" skill, however, is atrocious: it's a charged attack that blasts you forward, with unstoppable momentum and little i-frames. This is a problem because you'll collide with enemies and, more crucially, fall into one of the omnipresent instant death pits CONSTANTLY.

Speaking of death pits... yeah, NES difficulty at its peak, except this is a quasi-metroidvania, so you're supposed to get around a lot, but you can't go fast because of the many instakill hazards. Castles are especially egregious, being torturous stretches of deadly obstacles and increasingly annoying enemies, many dead ends that require you to explore other paths first without any chance of telling which is which. Then the boss is an absolute cakewalk, in a true rollercoaster of difficulty. The game is short, but it feels like it's always wasting your time. It's also very repetitive and monotonous. The light RPG elements, the dubiously useful spells, the simple quests and the unlockable additional modes do little to fix these basic problems.

Presentation is also a mixed bag. You have luscious character portraits, "versus" screens for bosses and choices, mini-cutscenes, unique death animations and an omnipresent, slightly concerning obsession for gruesome, pixelated gore shown in detail, but then the basic spritework for the game itself looks amateurish and bland, just a smidge more detailed than NES games of yore. Also, the UI is pretty bad, especially the health bar which feels wildly inconsistent. At least the soundtrack absolutely rocks, it's a veritable collection of bangers and I have no complaints on that front.

Infernax is a very strange beast overall, it's clearly a labour of love and it is remarkable in many of its ideas, but those ideas are part of an overall package that doesn't manage to rise very much (if at all) above the playability of the old classics it pays homage to. Personally, I was quite disappointed.

Eu falei sobre o jogo ter vários personagens, mas para o jogador 1 tem o Alcedor e algumas variações desse personagem, o mago Gardakan e o Stranger, é um cara que vem do futuro com uma escopeta, já para o jogador 2 tem apenas o Cervul e sua variação Cervile.... Só isso, eu gostaria que tivesse todos esses personagens para o jogador 2 também, e por fim, o jogo tem um sistema de moralidade, você pode fazer certas missões sendo do bem ou do mal, pra conseguir um dos finais específico, porém esse medidor de moralidade não é mostrado em lugar nenhum, você nunca sabe se está sendo bom ou mal o suficiente, mas é isso, o jogo é tão bom que eu precisei me esforçar pra achar coisas minimamente ruins.

Amazing game with a lot of content if you fully go in on it. Alternate paths for breakthroughs that not only change the story but your abilities. Secret characters, dungeons and endings. Very hard, with solo, coop or 2 chars solo modes. Also has some hilarious "Game Wizard" codes that change the game and a Contra mode ;)

Incredible game. I did not expect it at all. It's not even about the art, it's an outstanding local co-op game. I literally got baited expecting shovel knight, but got a gem. I thought Blasphemous 1 had the best combat in all metroidvanias, but this takes the cake.

If you want to play local co-op with a friend, I suggest this heavily, especially if you enjoyed playing local co-op Salt&Sanctuary (it's the only comparison)

As for the game, the combat is 10/10, dungeons too (valeshire keep, my beloved) except stormheim castle
The combat has depth. It utilizes crouching, instead of block/parry autism every game nowadays has (it has those too), which I appreciate because no other game utilizes crouching, for positioning and attacks. Well, not in a good way at least, as all games I know are janky with crouching, or crouching is near meaningless (smash bros).
Except this game, where crouching halves your hitbox, and allows you to hit a little lower.

The upgrades (e.g. for Cerville) are so damn fresh, and make dungeoneering actually fun, each dungeon has that rogue legacy 1 vibe, where you gotta think, but here it's better because local co-op increases enemies, and so, with traps, coordination is vital. Like, one player blocking, the other shooting from the back (it's more complicated than that) Player 1's movesets are complementary to Player 2's.

Aside of the genuinely interesting upgrades, the game is just excellent. It even accounts for sequence breaking (2nd shield upgrade of Player2, allows for ignoring double jump powerup requirement in most areas), and has many details and QoL. And having finished both ultimate evil and ultimate good playthroughs, may I say it even has good writing (the cult especially), which I did not expect at all from this kind of game.

Lastly, the NG+ is excellent. Ultimate Evil path/ending, makes you curious for Ultimate Good path/ending and so restarting the game. But you can roll Gardakan for P1 and evil Cerville for P2, which I wholeheartedly recommend for 2nd playthrough (NG with P1 Alcedor, and P2 Cervyl, then NG+ with P2 Gardakan, and P1 evil Cerville)
It felt like a fresh new game, the movesets were great for both characters, and most importantly, fresh.
And knowing most dungeons (especially the bs stormheim castle), it felt cathartic revisiting them with a new moveset so it was way faster a playthrough. So I paid 20$ for 2 games, instead of 1. Pretty sweet deal.

My only recommendation if you play this, is select a good/evil alignment and lock on it for your playthrough. 3 playthroughs for 2 endings is a bad idea, so either go full evil, or full good for your first one. The related choice starts from the very beginning.

I love a good platform game. Most are cutesy and kiddie-friendly, this one is not. It's a bit too gorey for me in places, however, it is loads of fun. Pretty fun short game. Most of the difficulty is dying to pits while navigating dungeons, the actual bosses are very simple and easy. If you play and feel it's too easy there are some other characters you can play as using specific names who are much weaker if you want an extra challenge.

平庸的复古游戏，跳跃高度固定是最大槽点，而其他方面，关卡设计水平一般，boss复杂度比较低，怪物种类重复度高，游戏玩法较为单调，不过丰富的支线和选择是游戏的亮点，可惜我并不看重这点，也不喜欢多周目玩法，所以算不上加分项。
游戏的难度主要体现在容错低，我比较推荐休闲模式游玩，至少能收获一个轻松的游戏体验。

I remember seeing this around so many times on YouTube, that I had a feeling of knowing what I'd be in for as soon as I get my hands on it. I've even seen this on Netflix - and yes, they had it where you can play this on their website - and I remember having an absolute blast on there with this, being reminded of classic but hard as balls titles like Castlevania, Zelda II, and so much more. Sure, the story isn't anything to write home about as it's about a knight coming home from the holy lands because he was growing tired of the crusades, only to find out that something followed him home and it's up to you - and your squire, should you bring a friend along, though sadly, for couch coop at the moment - to restore peace to the land.

And yet, there's something about this that I couldn't help but smile at as I played this for as long as I have. The game itself is a giant love letter to those games of old, from the music, the graphics, the controls - chunky as they can be, I'll give you that - everything about this screams 1980s while keeping things fresh with little modern touches here and there.

But for those of you that have had trouble and problems with the controls or whatever else seems to be getting your goat about this, all I can say is what, are you new here? Yeah, of [i]course[/i] this game is gonna be hard. There's been plenty of times where I've fallen into instant death traps and pitfalls and have wanted to tear my hair out because I mistimed a jump, but therein lies the point. You get better at it. You start figuring out the boss patterns and how you use your skills on-hand to traverse the landscapes and actually [i]pay attention[/i] to your surroundings, because yes, you're going to get inundated with attacks from all sides, not just from in front of you or behind you or wherever else. Either that, or use the cheats to train yourself to get better at it or just... Y'know. Go play more video games.

The overall point I'm getting at is that this is one game that's going to test your mettle time and time again. If you got the chutzpah for it, go for it. If not, then well, this game ain't for you. I can't make up your mind for you. But here's some advice I can offer you if you do decide to pick this up. Take a look at a guide here and there just to see for yourself what you might have missed along the way, because not everything is gonna be handed to you straight outta the gate.

This game is amazing. I love the art style, the music, the "Metroidvania" gameplay. Infernax is very replayable – there are a good number of optional quests and meaningful choices which lead to multiple endings, and there are several hidden characters and modes (as I'm writing this, I've not uncovered all of them).

Some of the levels are crazy punishing, but knowing that you can run back and save mostly mitigates this for me.

I should note that this is the first game where I actually managed to complete an evil playthrough. I can never stomach it... but Infernax just had me too freakin' curious!

A back-to-basics sidescroller with old school difficulty. Don't hesitate to use the "Casual" feature for your first couple of runs. There's a surprising amount of replay value and a hardcore "Classic" mode run is best attempted once you've wised up about the game's challenges. Progression feels great - you'll start off feeling incredibly vulnerable but each upgrade feels like putting another weight on the scales in your favor.

Definite recommend for anyone who is fond of retro sidescrolling action.

Das Game besticht durch seinen charmanten Retrocharme und kombiniert ein eher später erscheinendes Genre namens Metroidvania mit der durch den NES geprägten ,eher mit simpleren Spielkonzept gehaltenen Ära.
So finden wir in dem Game immer wieder Upgrades für den Helden in der Klassischen allseits bekannten Konstellation aus :
RÜSTUNG ,WAFFE, MAGIE.
Dazu gesellt sich ein Charackter Progression System mit den Passenden Werten :
LEBEN, STÄRKE, MANA.
Darüber hinaus gibt es Trankfläschen Upgrades für Lebens- ,Mana- und Elixier-Tränke.
Und als besonders Schmankerl , gibt es Continues in Form von Extra Leben , die Ihr erwerben könnt.
Die Anzahl der Upgrades bleibt überschaubar , aber bleibt dennoch motivierend genug um einen schönen Flow zu erzeugen.
Auch lassen sich einige Metroidvania Typische Skills finden, die unser Vorranschreiten unterstützen.
Hierbei handelt es sich um Skills um spezielle Wände aka Blöcke zu zerstören oder verschiedene Jump Skill auszuführen.
Das ganze wird garniert mit einer generischen Story , die allerdings die Besonderheit bietet , immer wieder INGame Entscheidungen zu treffen, welche meist mit einem sehr schönen Pixelartwork belohnt werden.
Nun ich sage bewusst metroidvania light , da allerdings auch nicht alles seinen weg ins game gefunden hat.
Wer gern nach versteckten Räumen sucht der wird hier seine Enttäuschung erleben.
Ebenso gibt es auch keinerlei shortcuts über die man sich freuen könnte.

Was uns auch zu einigen Kritikpunkten bringt.
Angefangen mit der Länge von knapp 8-10 Stunden, je nachdem wie fit ihr seid , oder ob ihr sidemissions miterledigt oder nicht,fällt das Spiel recht kurz aus,
Fairness halber bietet euch das game bedingt durch entscheidung die ihr trefft 4 verschiedene Enden an. Die alle in einem Extra Dungeon Münden.
Normal , Gut ,Böse oder Zukunft.
Allerdings muss dafür das base game jedes mal erneut gespielt werden.
Auch gibt es kaum was zu finden, da wir die meisten upgrades im Shop kaufen.
Also heißt es gold und exp grinden.
Wobei der Flow gut genug ist , dass sich das im regelfall beim normalen spielen von selbst erledigt.
Ein paar quest sind sehr kryptisch , und ein Skill wird zumindest auf deutsch so schlecht beschrieben,
dass ich ihn für genau die eine passage in der ich ihn hätte brauchen können, dann doch gogglen müssen.
Auch ist das balancing stellenweise fragwürdig.
Mit stets bester gear rasiert ihr auch den härtesten Boss ohne wirklich auf sein attack pattern achten zu müssen, während euch einige Sprungpassagen ,in verbindung mit sehr weit entfernten Savepoints zumindest bei mir einiges an Frust bieten.
Das blut und die gewalt mit der das game stellenweise beworben wird , ist dann ingame nicht sonderlich spürbar , nicht jeder boss hat ne artwork animation .

Cons:
-für einmal durchlauf recht kurz
-Gemetzel niedriger als erwartet
-stellenweise sehr generisch mit wenig neuem (Story,Progress)

Fazit: Trotz einiger Schwächen ein schönes und gameplay wise ,spassiges Metroidvania für zwischendurch. Es spielt sich solide und man hat manchmal das gefühl , komm die eine Map , den einen dungeon noch. Durch die Retrobrille betrachtet , wäre das game zur NES Ära erschienen, wäre es vermutlich das NES game , das jeder gekannt hätte und das nachhaltig ,kommende spiele revolutiniert hätte. Zumindest für mich wäre es das beste NES game aller Zeiten gewesen.
So bleibt es jeddoch ein spassiger trip in eine nicht existente Vergangenheit , ohne den heutigen Maßstab voll auszureitzen.
So bleibt zu Hoffen das eine mögliche Fortsetzung mehr liefert , mehr exploration, bessere Bosse , besseres und abwechslungsreicheres leveldesign, mehr items zu finden stats zu shoppen. Vll ja sogar ein sprung in die 16 bit ära.

TIPPS:
-Für die jeweiligen Enden empfehle ich google.

-an einer Stelle Stormdungeon , sind viele wohl am verzweifeln ,da sie den eingang nicht finden.
ein Npc liefert den Tip: ich sah das schloss in einer STÜRMISCHEN Nacht. Vll solltet ihr mal eure Spells nach etwas stürmischen oder feurigem durchsuchen.

-Der Angriff nach unten den ihr optional lernen könnt (und scheinbar für die GUT/Bösen enden benötigt)
funktioniert indem ihr in der Luft zweimal nach unten drück und nicht nach unten drücken und schlagen , so wie es fast jeder macht . springen , 2x runter , et voila

-soltet ihr den Angriff nicht haben , und kommt nicht durch die blöcke am Boden , probiert den Tag/Nacht Wechsel , so hat es mich durch geglitcht.

-Teleport zwischen save points ist ein Spell den ihr erwerben müsst , tip , merkt euch jedes Haus ,dass ihr ohne Sprung skill nicht erreicht.

-Zerbrecht euch nicht den Kopf über Türen und passwörter , einige Türen gehen nur mit der richtigen Quest auf.

-Elixier ist ein grüner Trank , vll weiss jemand in der hütte auf dem berg mehr darüber

-eine start quest , lässt sich nur im Endgame erledigen , also haltet euch nicht zu sehr mit Eheproblemen auf.

Ich bin schwere Spiele gewöhnt, habe sämtliche Fromsoftware Titel mehrfach durchgespielt. In diesen Spielen stirbt man auch häufig und hat dadurch viele Wiederholungen. Aber das Entscheidende ist, dass dort die Wiederholungen auf eine befriedigende Art und Weise erfolgen, da man dabei trotzdem immer mehr Items und Ressourcen sammelt und dabei immer stärker wird, irgendwann Abkürzungen freischaltet etc.

Bei Infernax jedoch sind das einfach nur Wiederholungen auf die extrem nervige Art. Manche Abschnitte sind einfach völlig unnötig schwer, man scheitert und dann ist einfach alles seit dem letzten Speichern weg. Es ist einfach schlechtes Spieldesign. Dieses Spieldesign führt dann schlussendlich dazu, dass man immer und immer wieder beim kleinsten Fortschritt wieder zurück zum Speicherpunkt läuft, um den Fortschritt nicht schon wieder zu verlieren. Man hat also immer wieder sehr häufig die gleichen Laufwege. Abkürzungen gibt es auch kaum. Also entweder verliert man die Zeit durch ständiges Laufen zu den Savepoints, oder man verliert die Zeit, weil man stirbt und der Fortschritt von 10 Minuten weg ist. Kann man sich aussuchen, was nerviger ist.

Wirkt so, als sei hier der Schwierigkeitsgrad nur so gewählt, um die sehr kurze Spieldauer zu strecken. Das Spiel ist extrem repetativ, auch die Gegner. Aber niemand mag ständige Wiederholungen, die nur Mittel zum Zweck sind, aber zum Spielerlebnis absolut null beitragen, sondern einem immer nur das Gefühl der Zeitverschwendung geben. Wie gesagt, Wiederholungen sind nicht per se schlecht, WENN man sie gut implementiert. Aber das hier ist einfach kein gutes Spieldesign. Das Spiel hat sehr viele gute Ansätze. Ich kann auch durchaus verstehen, warum es viele hooked. Aber für mich wurde das Potenzial hier an vielen Stellen nicht ausgereizt. Auch beim Item- und Skillsystem hätte man noch etwas mehr machen können. Also ich würd's nicht empfehlen, dafür ist mir dann doch meine Zeit zu schade.

Infernax is a masterpiece. There are many games that claim to be "retro" but often miss the mark. Infernax is a game that ought to be the benchmark by which other games of the genre are judged. The short of it is .. it gets it right. It understands the gameplay, graphics, and music (the music alone is mind blowing) while delivering something you would never have played back in the day as well. Lachhh is a genius. Stop waiting for Steam sale. Pay full price. It's worth double.

Это такой осовремененый Саймонс Квест, есть смена дня/ночи и даже призыв торнадо есть.
Игра прикольная, но одному там наверное жопа играть. А вдвоем становится легко, потому что у оруженосца и арбалет есть, который жестко прошивает мобов, а стандартная атака бросок топориков жестко уничтожает боссов, ибо милишному Герцогу приходится прыгать, а этот просто спамит, там еще под знаменами атака очень быстрая. Одному же все это проходить играя за герцога должно быть адово.

Было круто, но только в пати. Одному за Герцога мне кажется играть в игру совсем не весело. Возможно потом я это проверю, но не факт.

Got this game because I liked the art style in the screenshots and trailers and was not disappointed!

Pros:
- Art style is awesome
- The story is good
- Actual good vs evil choices with real story consequences.
- Combat works well for this type of game and is overall enjoyable
- Bosses are cool
- Good replayability thanks to different endings and game modifiers
- Music is good

Cons:
- Platforming becomes obnoxiously difficult in the endgame. But there is jetpack cheat code to resolve that.
- Not enough checkpoints in the castles.
- Healing potions are not restored after death making any magic other than healing useless (because mana is restored).

Overall, I definitely recommend the game. Hope to see a sequel that improves on the shortcomings of this game.
