Obnoxious narrator never shuts up insulting you ever time you die and repeats his voice lines every time you reset level.
Very obnoxious aiming where you have to full sprinting shoot a large bubble so that it only overlaps with one of the two objects in a small hallway.
Can't see where death lasers are as you're jumping over them so distance judging is imprecise.
Game has worst speed mechanic I've ever seen where you just have to constantly left click spam blue "speed up" bubbles at your feet literally every 0.5 seconds to maintain max speed.
Just not worth the time.

Beat half the game a got a top 500 speed within 20 minutes of launching, so no it's not copium.

First Person Sadism

Impulsion is undoubtedly a game that will appeal to certain gamers, but even those it appeals to will find certain mechanics of this game to be hard pills to swallow.

Impulsion is a first person speed running game. Your goal is always to get from one end of a level to the other as quickly as possible, but there is no penalty for going slowly other than a low grade, which makes the skill floor relatively low and the ceiling awfuly high. The gimmick that sets this game apart from similar titles is it's dual guns. Left click will fire a blue shot which will form a bubble that speeds up whatever enters it, as well as allow you to jump much further. Right click and you will fire a red projectile that slows down whatever enters it and gives you a single extra jump upon entering it.

These two guns, along with level obstacles is everything you'll be interacting with in this game, and the difficulty ramps up incredibly fast. For those people looking to show off their skills, getting the achievements of completing later levels is sure to peak their interest. However, this game has a few things that make slamming your head against it over and over again more of a slog than an enjoyable endeavor.

First, there is a narrator who speaks in every level, and has something to say every time you die. You'll be restarting so quickly that you'll never hear what he has to say, but it's a little grating to here a voice line call you an idiot over and over again. Once or twice, or doing it in a game where death doesn't occur much can be fun, but a game that asks you to try sections dozens of times to overcome them makes this mechanic pretty annoying.

On top of that, there are two core issues I have with the actual mechanics. First, because this is done in first person, it's difficult to gauge your characters hit box, so you'll be running into obstacles you though you had avoided a LOT until the invisible hit radius finally clicks for you, which may never happen for some people. Second, the game utilizes gun like objects that fire projectiles at you. Often these projectiles are fired too quickly for it to be possible to avoid, so you have to hit them with the red shot to slow them down and allow you to bypass them. The issue is two-fold. On the one hand, the intended method of handling them is to aim, fire, and hit them at just the right time for you to be able to slip through their shots. They don't fire at consistent rates, so this will be a trial by fire each time you enter a new level/section. Alternatively, when you hit them with a red orb, their fire rate is instantly reset, which means they can no longer fire for a short period. This means that instead of trying to avoid them with perfect timing and setups, you can simply mash them with red projectiles to completely halt their firing.

My issue is that neither of these options is fun. Yes, it is an interesting obstacle in theory, but I think simply turning them off when hit would test the skills the game wants to test without adding a layer of luck/mashing.

On top of the mecahnical issues I have with the game, I find the setting to be very bland and boring. The music isn't interesting, after the first 3 levels, you've seen everything the game has to show you visually, now you just have more and more difficult obstacles to overcome.

Again, I'm sure that this game will appeal to certain demographics, but unless you're someone who LOVES hitting your head against a wall over and over again, or you want to prove something to people, I don't think you're going to like this game.

I feel like in addition to the Souls-like genre, there should also be a Portal-like genre because it feels like there are a ton of indie game inspired by Portal, with my favorite being Lightmatter. You can defiantly feel Portal's DNA in Impulsion as well. The relatively short length, the two different colors you shot, the robot taunting you over the intercom, the future Syfy setting, the numbered test rooms. The real difference in game-play though is while Portal focuses on straight puzzle solving, Impulsion's has it's eye on fast movement. I had fun with it, but in a beat your head against the wall until you win kind of way. Of the 6 hours I spent playing this game, and full hour was spent on the final level, and trust me, I was losing it by the end. I think this game is worth a look, especially if you like hard games, but if you rather not tare your hair out, maybe play Lightmatter or replay Portal instead.

Overall decent, fast-paced platformer.
Some levels were genuinely difficult for me, while the last level was just a repetition of segments from the previous levels. Other than that, I had fun.

The worst part of the game, in my opinion, is the dialogue. Often, I completed levels before the characters ended talking. The overseer's voicelines after dying also become annoying after a while. I think there should be a limit or cooldown between them.

Level scores depend on your placement in the ranking. For S, you need to be above the top 400 times, based on what I've seen.

I got it on a discount, so I'm fine with the amount I paid. I'm not entirely sure about the full price, as I don't typically hunt for top rankings, so I didn't get that much playtime.

Having paid only 1,29$ for it is a steal, short but really cool game for such a good price, I wouldn't reccomend at full price tho considering this is a 2-3 hour game, absolutely buy on sale tho.

Well-designed levels with some fun mechanics. It gets difficult but never impossibly hard. The final level is a bit more difficult compared to all the others, since those have checkpoints, but it's manageable. First person puzzle platformer in the vein of Portal like games. You can shoot force fields which speeds up time or slow it down. You can utilize it to get pass certain obstacles. A lot of platforming and some reflex based skills are necessary. Gameplay is solid and offers something new. Each level have performance rating so getting that S rating might be difficult. Visuals are your typical lab testing facility, simple yet reliable. Voice acting is bearable. Music and sounds are ok. For such a low price (discount heaven) it's rather good. Choosing between this and another B class horror game I would say go with this one.

What if Ghostrunner and Portal had a baby? If you've ever had that question in your mind, then worry not because Impulsion has you covered.

Jokes aside, Impulsion is an incredible fast-paced platformer (of the likes of Ghostrunner) that takes quite a few cues from Portal, including its physics based puzzles as well as the setup itself (just don't expect any of Portal's trademark wit/humor or even any plot) and creates something amazing that will have you hooked from the start.

It's not a long game by any stretch - took me a little over 4 hours to finish all the 25 levels in the game for the first time and I'm sure someone with better reflexes could have done it in almost half the time - but what it does with that amount is nothing short of astonishing.

This is an easy rec from me. And if you are someone who enjoys fast-paced and challenging but [i]not [/i] near impossible platforming, then this pretty much becomes a must play for you.

[b]Impulsion[/b] est un très bon jeu de plateforme en vue FPS.
On évolue dans un dédale de niveaux ajoutant de nouvelles mécaniques fréquemment permettant de développer des manières différentes de se déplacer, principalement avec l'aide de nos deux armes qui génèrent des zones d'accélération et de ralenti. Le jeu est bien peaufiné et agréable à jouer, avec une difficulté croissante jusqu'à la fin du jeu.
Il peut être frustrant parfois, mais la satisfaction de prendre rapidement le coup est géniale. Une grande facette du jeu est basée sur le speedrun si ça vous intéresse, avec tout un tas de classements et un mode de jeu fait pour cela. Le level design est très bien pensé et apporte de superbes idées d'interactions entre l'environnement et nos armes.
On a également un semblant d'histoire qui donne envie d'avancer dans le jeu afin de découvrir la suite accompagné du narrateur narquois très efficace pour nous mettre à rude épreuve.

I guess I just don't get what the payoff is supposed to be. There's no story to move forward, nothing to reward progress except access to newer, harder levels that look pretty much the same as the last one. I understand that some gamers are driven by a letter grade going up, and are motivated by watching the stopwatch number at the end of a run go down, but I am not one of them. For me, it felt like a case of work being rewarded with more work.

Also, it is trying way to hard to be portal, down to the snarky insulting robot and setting up their levels to be 'test chambers', and failing embarrassingly in the comparison. All it accomplished was to remind me how sadly, bare-bones it was in comparison, lacking the wit, creativity, and immersion of the game they're trying to copy.

Nice little 3D platformer. Short but pretty cheap, was a fun passtime. Definitely worth it.

I wouldn't call it a ''difficult'' game. Levels do get harder but most people will be able to do them easily after a few tries. 26 levels in total. Movement mechanics were pretty smooth and I haven't encountered any bugs. Checkpoints can be a bit cruel especially towards the last few levels but that adds to the difficulty I guess. Last level has no checkpoints at all.

Dialogue can be annoying at times because everytime you die the narrator will make some petty remarks. But that can always be remedied by muting the game and listening to music in the background.

I really wanted to leave a positive review. The core mechanics have so much potential and I enjoyed much of the game. Rerunning the more fast paced levels to improve my time was a blast and there are some great ideas in here. Unfortunately, for each brilliant idea, Impulsion has just as many frustrating and boring ones, and my experience from level to level constantly shifted between exhilaration and exhaustion. The game is at its best when it constructs creative ways to use the tools you're given, but it so often chooses to focus on player positioning and repetitive basic platforming as the game progresses that it loses sight of what makes it special and becomes a chore to finish. I'd love to see a follow-up with further development of these mechanics, but this isn't quite it.

Short and sweet to sum it up

Didn't notice any unfair death or glitches, every death is your own fault, easier if you go in knowing the routes died many time more on level 25 than any-other level combined (those damn fans) (got in top 100 thou, where most my runs in other levels well up in 4 digits)

This games achievements require you to die 1000 times to get all of them, as well as somehow be stuck on a level for more then 5 minutes. Just beating my game on my first run I only got the first death achievement for 100 deaths. Not everybody cares about these sort of things, but with a game like this that feels more like a test demo rather then an actual project, it's a little disappointing to have to go out of your way and purposely lose for an hour just to 100% it.
TLDR: It silly, and silly achievements makes for more silly

Definitely deserves a recommendation even though there are some irritating design choices (like too few checkpoints for example). There are some fun challenges that will definitely test your aiming, timing, and air strafing. Speedrunning the levels gives me a bit of a headache as you have to keep shooting the blue speed up field nonstop.

For a similar game but that was slightly less frustrating I would recommend Rayze. That game is only aim-focused however, so get this game if you also want platforming.

Jogo de parkour curto mas bem interessante. Lembra um pouco de portal por conta da narrativa atrelada a uma IA e uma mecânica simples mas que pode ser explorada bastante. ( E por ser duas armas igual na de portal )

Me diverti com a mecânica base de acelerar e desacelerar porém os checkpoints como muitos falaram faltaram nas fases. Se colocssem como padrão mais checkpoint e tivesse um modo para tirar já faria com que as fases fossem modulares de fácil, médio e difícil sem precisar mexer na fases atuais ou colocar mais fases.

De qualquer forma não deixa de ser um jogo deveras divertido.

I listened to the other reviews and just played with voices off. Parkour mechanics are fun and spices things up in neat way throughout most of the game. Fairly challenging but short, can be beaten in 1-2 hours if you're good at games like these. Lots of way to min-max your speed if you want to go for best times possible!

If you're really big on games like this, buy at base price. If not wait for a sale imo.

A fast-paced puzzle platformer that doesn't overstay its welcome, Impulsion has a bit of a steep learning curve, but flows effortlessly once you get a feel for its mechanics. Though the levels can often be finished in a more relaxed pace if you want, chasing high-scores and a better rank on the leaderboard is a lot of fun.
The voice acting is meh, but the story is paper-thin anyways. Performance is great, any mid-tier GPU should be able to push above 120 FPS. The only thing I'm really missing is a level editor, as the 25 levels can be completed in 2-4 hours and I feel like this game could have an active community otherwise.

Impulsion is a speed running first person platformer. Focus on the speed running.
The "narrative" campaign is short, but it promotes replayability through Graded Scores and timed leaderboards.
While I mostly enjoyed finishing the game and running it through one more time for the "speedrun" achievement, I don't have much desire to continue playing. I think the mechanics are a bit too wonky for me to feel like this is something I can self challenge and try to get better in.

Although this is all fairly negative, I do think the game does what it attempts to do. It feels like CS:GO surfing with Portal platforming. It's cheap, it's quick to beat, but allows the replayability if you're looking for it.

If the game seems like it's for you, you probably won't be disappointed. It just might not be your favorite game either.

This is a fun first-person puzzle platformer that has been let down by the fact that it needs more checkpoints. Some parts of the later levels are stupidly difficult and can only be beaten through hundreds of deaths and hours of grinding. I have better things to do with my time.

No levels stood out as being bad, but only a few stood out to me as being really good. I kept getting an error telling me that I was on an invalid platform when trying to launch the game. Uninstalling the game and reinstalling fixed this issue, but then it would happen again when I would try to open it. Other than that I ran into no issues.

I got it as part of Fanatical's Easter Mystery Egg Bundle this year. The current price of $13 isn't too bad, but I probably wouldn't buy it for more than $10 assuming I would play through it again. If I was only going to play through it once, would probably buy it around $5 to $8.

Platformer nieco przypominający takie tytuły jak Q.U.B.E. czy Portal. Mamy tutaj bohatera, który odzywa sie trzy razy na krzyż, więc w sumie równie dobrze możemy go traktować jako niemego. Towarzyszy nam upierdliwe AI, które musi powtarzać swoje kwestie jeśli zginiemy gdy daną dokończy (a giniemy często) oraz które regularnie komentuje nasze zgony (których jest sporo). Przyznam, że w pewnym momencie po prostu zacząłem grać bez dźwięku, byle tylko tego nie słuchać.

Sam gameplay prezentuje koncept dwóch pistoletów, którymi to wystrzeliwujemy adekwatnie sferyczne strefy przyspieszające lub spowalniające. Koncept niezgorszy, bardziej nastawiony na zabawę zręcznościowo-platformową niż jakieś łamigłówki. Sama ta część jest solidna i przyjemnie zrealizowana gdy ją zrozumiemy.

Niestety konstrukcja poziomów woła o pomstę do nieba. W trakcie gry doznamy sinusoidy wrażeń od "haha, ez", poprzez "wtf jak ja mam to przejść" by wrócić do "lol, takie łatwe, po co mi był ten checkpoint", a to wszystko w ramach jednej mapy. Poziom trudności jest moim zdaniem dość nierównomierny, często upierdliwie dokładny (gra jest trudniejsza niż podobne tego typu tytuły, w które grałem), a do tego checkpointy zdają się rozłożone ot byle jak, bez większego sensu. Tyle "plusów" w tym rozwiązaniu, że przygotowuje nas to do trybu speedrun, w którym to należy przejść całą grę, za checkpointy mając tylko początki kolejnych poziomów (a jest ich 25).

W momencie pisania mam 3h na liczniku, przeszedłem grę 2 razy (raz 'normalnie' i raz 'speedrun'), w tym pół godziny afk jak poszedłem jeść. Pomimo moich narzekań na nierówny poziom trudności, widzę, że nawet 500 śmierci nie mam, a co dopiero 1000. Na szczęście restart planszy zajmuje około sekundę, więc wbicie calaka zajmie mi tyle, ile wbiegnięcie 500+ razy w przepaść (lol).

Podsumowując jednak wystawiam grze negatyw, ponieważ doznałem tutaj o wiele więcej irytacji i z innych kierunków, niż bym oczekiwał od tego tytułu.

PS. Jest to jedna z tych gier, którym wystawiłbym opinię neutralną gdyby się dało, ale że się nie da, to jednak szala przeważyła na stronę negatywną.

Really fun parkour/platforming game with a super unique movement system. Definitely worth the money while it's on sale.

The only issue I have is the the game seems to miss button presses sometimes, so I have to stand still and press right click several times for the game to actually register my input and shoot the red gun. This can be super frustrating, especially towards the end of a level.

Overall I give it a 7.5/10. If the input detection gets fixed 8.5/10.

i want to enjoy it on my steam deck, but as the levels progress, it starts requiring faster and more precise aiming-- more than what a thumb trackpad can provide. Now i've got to swap to desktop and mouse IF i'm to continue. But i dont want to do that. i want the red panels to be bigger and the red bubbles to let me jump more than once. Plus the player voice lines and narrator lines are trash.

It's alright but i give it a thumbs down, only play it i've you have exhausted all other options.
It all feels and plays like something still in development. Everything looks like prefabs, the voice acting is bad, there is no story. The gameplay is simple and easy to pick up, but my god, are some of the obstacles in the game incosistent. Sometimes i get killed by a laser sometimes not, there is not a clear edge as to when you are in danger and when not. Some maps feel like they've been put together in 5 mins with no effort. Also there is no diffuculty curve it's more like a rocky montain where sometimes it's super hard and then super easy.
First playthrough took me 1,5 hours and in order to get all archievements i also played the speedrun mode and pretty much was at 100% after 2,5 hours. The last three archievements only took additional 30 mins, where funnily one is to take LONGER than 5 minutes to pass a level which amused me. Unfortunately i don't feel to the urge to get an S score on every level because like i said before the game is so heavily incosistent.

Yeah not sure where this is going, if you want to a solid alternative, check out Neon White, it also has complexer game mechanics but at the same time is easier to pickup.

If you want to play this game at some point you will have this experience. You will reach a checkpoint, and in front of you is a series of jumps which is extremely difficult. Everything about it is exactly the same as a jump section you've already done 10 times except gradually it's been made to require more precision inch by inch. You try, you die and then hear a snip of an off the street voice actor insulting you as you mash the respawn button to cut it off and try again. Die > 'A vacuum cleaner could do bet-' > Respawn. Die > 'You must try ha-' > Respawn. Die > 'You su' Respawn. Over and over.

However in this situation you might consider yourself lucky because at least you are near a checkpoint, because the main way in which impulsion increases its difficulty is spacing out checkpoints. So where as before this section of identical jump had a checkpoint after. You now have 3 sets of jumps identical to ones you've done before and then a checkpoint. Then 5, then 7. And on and on it goes without ever introducing any new mechanics past the 10 minute playtime mark.

I think a lot of people might look at this game thinking it is like Portal. It is not. It is not a puzzle game. The speed/slow down mechanic is not used in any clever way to act as a puzzle, it purely facilitates jumping. The Slow-momentum gun can't even be shot anywhere, literally just orange squares so it is the only way of tackling that jump. This game allows for 0 creativity in how it is tackled and two guns literally just come down to. Shoot to move faster, shoot to do a hop on a designated surface. The hop/stop-momentum gun is utterly pointless. Think of it more as a means of shooting your own platforms, but only in 1 specific location so they might as well just put the platforms in the game and remove this mechanic entirely.

It really is hard to convey how ultra repetitive this game is, but if it gives an idea, in a game that lasts a lousy 2-3 hours I was begging for it to end.
