短めのJRPGとしてそつなくまとまっており、プレイヤーを楽しませようという工夫が随所に見られた。
マップ探索・音楽・EDが特に気に入り、実績全解除までしっかり楽しませてもらった。
・即勝利機能は使いたくないが、戦闘で詰まったorダルいという人へ
レベルを上げて魔法（ノーコスト）で殴れ。
レベルアップによる攻撃力の上昇が大きく、そのレベルもすぐに上がる。
レベリング中だけ即勝利機能を使うのもいいだろう（俺はそうした）。
レベルアップに必要な経験値がだいたい一回のザコ戦で得られる経験値のたかだか10倍くらいになるまでレベルを上げるだけで、ボスもサクッと倒せる火力が手に入る。
防御力はレベルアップで上がらないので、それでも最低限の緊張感は維持できる。
中盤で少しレベリングした後ラスダンで自然に到達したレベル26で成長が緩やかになったので、概ねそこが成長限界ということなのだろう。
そこまで上げれば、ラスボスも楽勝になる。
…ていうかラスボス戦がやたらと長いので、そこまで上げないとかなりダルいだろうと思われる。
クリア後に実績集めをするなら、もう一度倒さないかんし。
それでも裏ボスはなかなか歯ごたえがあり、特にネコのネ申みたいなやつは苦戦した。
まあ人間が猫に敵わないのは現実も同じなので、仕方のないことだろう。
ED、特に最後のエピローグが素晴らしいので、スタッフロールでの離席厳禁。
I found Ikenfell through its soundtrack, and the game went on sale shortly after. I'm glad that I pushed myself to buy the game.
As someone who can get into turn-based tactics, I found the combat relaxing. and the scope of Ikenfell's plot was kept within reason to emphasize the care that they put into developing the characters throughout the story. :3
Ikenfell is exactly what I appreciate seeing when I'm lucky enough to come across it, and I would recommend this to someone else also looking for something a little laid back.

Today I will review the game IKENFELL. This is a indie game featuring a female protagonist looking for her missing sister in a magic school. While searching, she will discover many secrets and weird things happening at the school. With the help of other students the player finds around the school, they will discover many locations in the school.
The fighting is strategy based on a grid. The players will have to decide where to move and what spells they can cast on a limited location. Sometimes it takes a couple turns to even get to the enemies. Certain enemies have different ranges too, so players must change strategies to fight them. The higher the character levels are, the more advanced spells they learn too.
The story of the different characters you meet are interesting too. Some have alot of back history and talk about it later in the game to learn more about them. Even the comedy relief character has a interesting story to learn.
PROS:

- Players must use strategies to move and use spells to control the battle.
- Many locations to explore in a magic school.
- Side quests and hidden bosses.
- Gems to find to upgrade special equipment and to buy it.
- Petting cats to heal and save the game.

- Controller support. Works with Nintendo switch controller as that is the kind i used.
CONS:
- Many people may not like the LGBT things in the game, but there not forced down the players throats. They are in the game though.
Do I recommend the game? Yes, it can be a fun indie rpg. The fact they had songs with actual voice lyrics in it really surprised me when i heard them. The story is interesting too, and some of the characters have decent back stories and history on them. The fact that some of the characters are gay and lesbians did not bother me, but i am only putting this here to let others know that they are present in this game. These kind of things bother some people. But for the game itself, it is enjoyable, and most of the achievements are pretty easy to get.

realizing i never reviewed this omg. i think it took me... 20 hours??? idk. this game is GOOD. the music is good, the combat is fun, the characters are lovely. its a good game. i DO reccomend it.
but the ENDING. OUGHHH. i get the sense they ran out of time in the last quarter of the game. the narrative... feeeeeels like it kinda... peeters off. and then theres still a few hours left. its FINE. just. dissapointing. ultimately i still reccomend it but the ending might put you off

Final Thoughts: It's not *great*, but it's still pretty good, except the pacing never picks up the way it feels like it should. Combat starts off fun and interesting as you learn the mechanics, but it never really gets more difficult or complex, there's just *more* of it, and the addition of traps and a few other things that keep the pacing slow left me wanting to just skip combat after a while except for the boss fights, and even then it was really just to see if I could steal some unique loot from them or see if they had any wacky mechanics to them.
The story is... weirdly enough, kind of the same way. It's never *bad*, and if you like stories about magic schools and have an aching void in your life because you can't look at Harry Potter the same way anymore, this isn't a bad way to fill it. It's just that the journey to get to it becomes kind of cyclical: go to new place, fight some monsters, get a teeny bit of lore, and now if you want to know more you need this new McGuffin or talk to this other person whom no one thought to talk to prior so now we go to a new area and do it all over again.
The whole thing is about 20-25 hours long, and somewhere around the halfway mark I started feeling like I just wanted to get to the end so I could have all of the mysteries unraveled and find out what actually was going on and how it turns out. So yeah, turned on Combat Skipping and just played out fights when I felt like it, and at that point it started to be fun again because the pacing sped up a lot and I was able to get through the rest of the story. Again, not a *great* story, but pretty good.
All in all, it's worth playing if either the premise of young adult magic stories or timed tactical RPG intrigued you, although you'll probably want to tweak the settings at some point unless you just REALLY can't get enough of that combat, in which case, have at it I guess :)

What a game. You can tell what a labour of love this was. Not too easy, not too heavy, just the right amount of a fun time solving a mystery in a magic school. Really really enjoyed this one.
I absolutely love this game, the story is great with plenty twists and turns and I grew to love the characters as it went on. The gameplay is fun with both strategy and skill, though can be entirely strategy with options changes which I appreciate. Each new area doesn't overstay its welcome, and brings new puzzles to solve.
Also gotta address I never felt like I needed to grind, but I did fight every enemy I came across at least once, I hardly call that a level grind though.
I played this game to a point years ago and then recently picked it back up to start over & finish this time. It was a wonderfully deep, rich, and lovely game. I particularly liked the dungeon designs with fun puzzles and just the right amount of optional encounters. Bosses were tough and I felt like they really pushed you to get good at the battle system (at least until the very end, but by then the gear & items cover most of your mistakes as somewhat expected). The art and story are the stars of the show though. I felt so invested in these characters and the boss fights (especially the ending). Truly an amazing setting that I hope the creators return to some day! I really enjoyed the unique characterization of each party member and what they all brought to the table in skills & interests. I found myself swapping between them throughout the game because of story reasons and just wanting to try out their new spells.
I loved how many secrets and secret bosses were in the game! I also adored the music (except for one or two with vocals... now I didn't NOT like them, but when they were first introduced it was during battles and was very distracting... let's just say I got a lot of Oops!) particularly the first forest theme and the somewhat creepy memory theme.
My only complaints are around equipment & the harshness of misses on timing of certain abilities. If you take a full turn to set a trap, add a buff, or add HP regen then it should at least do something. Not wiff completely (yeah yeah skill diff... but still) now not all abilities are like this but a few are. I think that was a way to balance their strength, which I respect. It was just a bit frustrating and towards chapter 6 & 7 were particularly punishing. As for equipment, there is an avalanche of stuff in this game! And they are just subtly different from each other. I did enjoy some of the gem gear, which changed the way certain characters can be played, but I think having a few sets of gear to change up how spells work or prop up certain playstyles would be neat to see in the next game.
The developers created something really special here and I can see myself thinking back fondly on this game. It was a rich experience and I can't wait to play whatever they come out with next! :)
It's good! I like it. Very charmingly written game. Makes good use of the tactical grid strategy + Mario RPG interactive attacks gig it's got going on. It is worth noting the extent of mechanical customization feels like it's mostly down to whose in your party, but the game does seem more focused on its narrative and mechanical gameplay loop than character customization.
If you do play it looking for LGBT+ representation, be aware that the world of the game is one where queerness is generally so normalized it's almost as normal as breathing or going out to get a meal with your pals. Explicit and spotlighted representation though normalized existence, rather than flashy flag waving. But the world is still charming and delightful.
Super mixed feelings on this one. Overall I liked it, and by the end I found myself invested in the story and characters. I liked the gameplay and how it was balanced, I liked the characters, story, themes, music, and how diverse the cast was.
Things that held it back for me:
- Battles felt like a slog. Random enemy encounters take so long that I often found myself avoiding them just to feel some progress rather than a 10 minute fight
- Story felt like it lulled for awhile before really picking up towards the end
- Music was good but often listening to the same song over and over. Some of the lyric songs were also pretty corny
- I wish there was more of a reason to swap characters and use the full cast. Some of them feel purely outclassed by the others
- Equipment was largely "bigger numbers" but felt like there were too many options given how kinda basic it ultimately was and made equipping new stuff feel like more of a chore that I'd often forget to do
I never read or got into Harry Potter, and I don't identify as LGBTQ+, so I think this probably a case of being an outsider and not the target audience. I could see if I was an LGBTQ+ teen, this might have become my favorite game I wouldn't shut up about.
Amazing story, great characters, awesome music, and beautiful pixel art. If you want to feel the nostalgic, magical vibes you need to visit this magic school.
Adorable pixel art and animations. Great feeling captured in just a few pixels. Very LGBT+ friendly, with cute romance story bits between the save-the-world story and turn-based combat. Combat gets a bit samey-by the end, but changing your team helps provide interest. Plays great on Steam Deck.

ストーリーは、魔法の才能がなくて魔法学校に入れなかった主人公マリットが魔法学校在学中の姉に会いに学校の近くに行ったところ、謎の現象に巻き込まれ急に魔法が使えるようになるところから始まる。
結構つけっぱなしで放置してしまったので詳しい時間は分からないがクリアまで20時間くらいは遊べるはず。
ストーリーはしっかりしているしゲームのボリュームもある。
収集要素のジェムや隠しボスもありつくりはしっかりしている。
エンディングでとってつけたようにDEI設定が確定する。
結構おすすめ。

giving a thumbs-up because there's a lot to love and to support queer games but it still left me feeling let down in a number of ways.
firstly it should be acknowledged that this game was released in 2020 and I played through it at the start of 2026. that wasn't [i]that[/i] long ago, but long enough where I won't be able to fully appreciate the boldness of some choices. neopronoun representation stands as a bold inclusion even today.
the music slaps no matter the mood, and there's a generous amount of it with several battle themes and even some nice vocal themes here and there. the sound design in general is solid, a number of floor types are a joy to walk over because of the pleasing sfx. there are many, many animations between all the player and enemy attacks, and they're filled with cute flourishes that really sell their personalities. ikenfell as an audiovisual experience is fantastic, and any game would be lucky to have as much polish in this area,
the dungeons and overworld give you a reasonable amount of secrets to find and puzzles to solve, never anything so obscure as to be frustrating and usually just enough to put a smile on your face. you're often rewarded for your efforts with useful equipment and items, and as a nice touch none of the clothing is gender-locked. the almost total lack of findable weapons is odd, but I can see the argument that they didn't want to reward you with character-specific gear when you'll likely not be utilizing the full cast.
you'll eventually have 6 candidates to choose for your party of 3, all of them eventually earning 8 largely unique skills each, and each candidate can be built a number of different ways depending on what playstyle you prioritize for them. a dozen people could come up with a dozen different character compositions for their playthroughs, not even getting into builds and the resulting variety of strategies. there's no wrong choice, and even unused characters get (most of) the experience your active fighters earn, so you're free to experiment to your heart's content no matter how you've played prior.
the combat system has a lot of potential, combining a trpg grid with mario-style timed hits/blocks and low damage numbers, though it can also be tedious handling both for extended periods of time during some battles. the attack animations make most timings intuitive and reactable even the first time you see them, which you'll have to master if you have any interest in dealing or reducing big damage, and inflicting or avoiding nasty status effects. positioning plays a major role, figuring out the best ways to place your fighters so as to best take advantage of your favorite skills to use is a joy. plenty of fun to be had, so long as you keep your levels up. if you don't, however...
this is where I get a lot more negative, and I apologize in advance for how vitriolic I may get about what is ultimately a lovingly-crafted queer game.
this game was NOT meant to be played without SOME grinding and it SHOWS. if you're not fighting at least a couple optional battles per boss then every encounter is going to be a slog. being able to run around enemies in the overworld and being able to escape from them 100% of the time if you run into them is lovely, but if you're going to have to grind [i]anyway[/i] because otherwise you're stuck doing 1 damage to everything with the way stats scale, does it really matter? even mastering the timing of your attacks isn't going to help you if your stats are too low, an oops or a nice or a great will net you the same damage. at least there's an option to automatically win a fight (or phase of a fight, a handy feature considering how long some bosses can be) that I made substantial use of to skip the grind, but couldn't boss adds just give exp?
that'd make a huge difference considering [i]almost every boss in the game summons them.[/i] they're all 2 or 3 phase fights where most start with adds and end with stronger adds and if you defeat the adds then more adds get added and since none of them give you a single exp point, you're usually better off just ignoring them and letting every battle take thrice as long. if you're lucky they'll throw traps around too, and they'll mix together to give you the sardine can special. a tactical challenge, to be sure, but more variety would've been appreciated.
speaking of enemy design, why are so many either basic shapes with silly faces, everyday animals and objects, or shadows? the uniqueness of creature designs is a crucial ingredient in the flavor of any fantasy world, but these ones are severely lacking, well-animated as they may be. they stand out in the way they don't stand out at all, but I'm certainly not going to think back fondly on any of them if I can even remember them a week from now.
equally bland are the various plot contrivances which push you from dungeon to dungeon. so much of the time, especially in the first half but in the second half as well, your goal is either to find a key to a door or to find a person or thing that can help you find a key to a door. in the most egregious example of this, you have to get through [i]five[/i] bosses and their associated dungeons, [i]an entire quarter of the main quest,[/i] before you're allowed to open [i]a single door.[/i] experiences are had and bonds are formed during this sequence, but it doesn't break the feeling that you're just doing endless chores instead of solving a mystery.
A couple more thoughts on the writing to finish out this review below. I ran out of space to go over specific characters in more detail, but I found myself wishing that two [spoiler](petronella and gilda)[/spoiler] had more going on in general and two others [spoiler](rook and imu)[/spoiler] had more prominent struggles. I don't think there's quite enough antagonism between them all to justify certain narratives, but it's still nice to see occasional issues crop up even if I'm not fond of how safely they're resolved. the side cast tends to be one-note, but there are standouts.
the ending:
[spoiler]why do ibn and bax, a living ship dynamic more than actual people, comic relief in most of their handful of appearances, get to steal the finale of the game away from more built-up characters? why is ibn's pain at temporarily losing bax given more weight than aeldra permanently losing her old allies? why does safina, whom the entire narrative of the game up to this point revolves around in some way, get to just sleep through everything, instead of being equally integral to the ending? I felt so hollow beating the game, crossing my fingers for something more substantial that simply never came. at least the epilogue was cute.[/spoiler]
representation:
for a game that's presumably hoping to clap back at a certain author's treatment of trans people, no one so much as mentions the word "trans" throughout the entirety of ikenfell's script. the entire main cast and much of the supporting cast are explicitly queer, yet apparently queerness being so visible makes it too uninteresting for anyone to have a real conversation about, which paradoxically turns it into something akin to cishet invisibility. I'd love to hear what rook's non-binary identity means to him, or what imu's neopronouns mean to zir, but the writing seems far more interested in "coziness" and normalization (read: cishetification) than authentic exploration. this approach to diversity extends to race and culture as well, resulting in a colorblind and monocultural (western?) world and the ikenfell gang being only a marginal improvement over the burger king kids club gang in how deeply their identities are felt.
I suppose it's on me for expecting a cozy game that wants you to feel safe and accepted while playing it to provide that depth of representation, and it's cool to see all these identities represented in even a nominal capacity, but I can't see myself in any of the cast and that just bums me out a lot, man.

Ikenfell is a sweet little RPG
I do like the game; the music is good, the story is nice. The gameplay left a bit to be desired, though. I found later-game activity to be rather frustrating and I ended up turning on easy mode; the two main grievances I have are routinely getting screwed over by the enemy party having too many turns in a row, and some actions, such as placing traps, not counting as a turn at all unless you do it. The last few sections of the game were so frustrating to me that they ended up souring the game in general a bit.
I can't hold it against it too much, though: I'm not great at RPGs, and I don't like them much. Unfortunately many of the really good indie games seem to be RPGs.
I'm not over the moon about this game but it's pretty good and probably worth your time, especially if you like this sort of game.

If this game came out 30 years ago, it would definitely be regarded as one of those classic RPGs you could play over and over and over without ever getting tired of, like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger.
Ikenfell does a masterful job at immersing you in the fantasy of having an adventure in a school of magic, and making it into a really fun RPG. And the music is incredible too!
By the end of it, it's impossible not to love every single character, including the small NPCs. I simply love this game, it is perfect.
If I had to find one flaw, it's that there are way too many bosses that summon minions.
Ikenfell is a story-rich, wholesome game with beautiful, grounding music and a world that feels warm and inclusive, especially in how it embraces LGBTQ representation. The characters and setting are so charming that it’s hard not to wish the game would go on longer. The instant victory option was a great touch, letting the story shine without combat frustration. I would happily play any sequel, prequel, or new story set in this universe.
One of my favourite indie RPGs. A true gem, featuring a very queer and diverse cast, a story with plenty of twists and turns, an incredibly unique setting full of creative ideas, plus a stellar soundtrack that I still listen to years after first playing it! The combat is a little tricky at first, but once you get a handle on timings, it flows a lot better and works really well. Getting new abilities and equipment always felt impactful. There's tons of secrets to discover by exploring, and the art style is gorgeous.

剩下的翻翻词典或者软件能基本做到无障碍阅读 开局乍一下让我以为是个紧张快节奏的剧情
但是掐到一半大伙发现主角的魔力从未见过 反倒开始教学起来 最后一块坐在火堆边聊天
到这里就能看出游戏本身的剧情是偏明快的 相信即便有阴暗之处也不会太胃疼

又没有相应文字提示 搞得我只能盯紧图标看清是否选错 之前有提到游戏的画面不算优秀

Ikenfell is a straightforward RPG on the surface, but it surprises with a touching story, character growth that feels natural, and a solid battle system. It may not be a groundbreaking adventure, yet it delivers a warm, engaging experience that is easy to appreciate.
Still progressing through the game, but seems quite good so far. Combat timing mechanics are varied and interesting, story is well-written.
It's so good I had to buy the game twice (1st on switch then on steam)
I hope to see more from this studio, the combat and accessibility options are very welcoming for gamers of all kinds
I went into the game not knowing much about it and I actually quite enjoyed it. The setting is somewhat generic magic school and the plot is somewhat generic save the world, but all the different characters and what they have going on really makes it interesting. Each of the story quests kept my attention drawn in and I found the puzzles to get progressively more challenging, but always doable. The game is very linear, with each small area unlocking for a quest, typically with a ‘dungeon’ of some kind, then you move on to the next area, repeat about a dozen times. The music was great and each character had a theme song of sorts, which is always cool.
The combat was pretty well done and balanced. Each character felt unique and they did a good job using magic to fill every role. It’s turn-based with time-based penalties/bonuses, but there are accessibly settings to reduce the reflex stuff or remove completely, which is great. The enemies were varied for the most part and there were a lot of different attacks to get familiar with, but by the end it felt a little routine. The optional/achievement end game bosses were definitely challenging, but not impossible, I enjoyed them.
I noticed some questions and negative comments about the LGBTQ+ tag, so I figured I would address that. It’s throughout the game and a direct focus (mostly L/G), but not preachy, and it’s pretty obvious the developers were genuine in their handling of it. The characters are interesting people and that’s a facet of them, just like real life. If that kind of stuff really bothers you then you should honestly avoid the game altogether (and re-evaluate yourself). For the record, I’m a straight, white male with a live-and-let-live philosophy, so I feel my support/recommendation of the game is fairly objective. At first the cover art concerned me, since they look like little kids that should be more interested in toys and playing than self-discovery, but in the game they’re actually mid-to-late teens. Kind of a weird difference and maybe they pivoted during development without updating it.
A wonderful game. From the story to the graphics, it managed to keep me entertained and passionate. UNFORTUNATELY, the combat system is awful. A Paper Mario-style combat system doesn't go well with this type of pixel art. The hit boxes often don't match up, and it seems more like a matter of luck and muscle memory. If you like lesbians and Harry Potter, this game is for you. 7/10

A delightful little game with a charming art style and a surprisingly deep story. 9/10. (I took one point off for the deeply unsettling star thing.)

It's a great game. You'll get used to the simple art quickly. Plays a bit like a tactics game with a little bit of Paper Mario timing. The story is melodramatic, somewhat predictable, but still memorable.

Це не просто гра по порятунок школи, тут багато емоцій, особистих проблем, сильно розкрита тема дружби. Загалом сюжет цікавий, але бої часто дуже затягнуті, навіть якщо увімкнути спрощення. Особливо бої з босами. Близько години, а то і більше, на бій це виснажливо, але принаймні є налаштування, де поєдинки можна вимкнути. Тим не менш в боях анімації добре пропрацьовані, кожен ворог особливий. Також цікаво досліджувати локації. Це одна з небагатьох ігор такого жанру (які я знаю), де доводиться справді користуватись магазинами, а не обходитись речами з під куща.
Ikenfell é uma ótima experiência, a gameplay funciona bem e é bem frenética e puxa o jogador a ficar engajado com ela o tempo todo.
Os sprites são muito lindos e transmitem bem a personalidade tanto dos inimigos quanto dos personagens principais.
A história também não deixa nada a desejar, desenvolvendo bem tanto o contexto geral quanto as problemáticas individuais de cada membro da equipe, tornando muito fácil de entender seus poderes e se identificar com eles.
E a cereja no bolo é a combinação de tudo, uma vez que todos os recursos desse jogo se completam, é muito mais interessante analisar os detalhes do jogo quando se tem uma noção de que os cenários afetam os personagens, os personagens interagem entre si, o combate se conecta com a história, a história é contada também pelos locaus onde se vai, basicamente a coesão do mundo traz a magia que nos foi prometida.

Starts slow, but picks up momentum as it goes and you get familiar with the combat/gameplay conventions and get more invested in the characters. I'm generally a detractor for quick time events in combat, but enjoyed the way it played here with its learnable timing windows. The light tactical element of the grid felt underdeveloped, but also leads to satisfying turn-to-turn variety. Plot follows a linear chain of investigation model, where everyone sends you to a new location to solve the next link in the mystery. Characters are likable and everyone is thoroughly queer with some lovely, very human moments.
the game was so fun and the music was so good. its not super difficult and has settings to make it easier, including one to instantly win all battles on the first turn! i love this game and enjoyed it thoroughly, will definitely replay it again in the future!
Super well-written characters. Genuinely funny moments that make me laugh. Fighting system is also very satisfying, 11 hours in I'm having a blast. can only recommend this game.
Ikenfell can be a mixed bag at times but overall I think the positives outweigh the negatives for me to recommend it. It's also v e r y queer lol 80% of the main characters are gay and that's some great representation. So if you're the "my pronouns are kiss my ass" or "everything's woke" type.... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ off lmao go play warzone or some ♥♥♥♥.

Pros:
-Excellent soundtrack. I don't know ♥♥♥♥ about Steven Universe but the composers also did the music for it and apparently that speaks for itself from what I understand.
-Graphically, the game is quite nice. From backgrounds to overworld sprites and battle sprites and everything inbetween, it's all pretty solid and looks really nice. It's a little strange that the art on the store page makes everyone look almost childish when most characters seem to be at least 18 if not older while the absolute youngest is I think like 16 and I might even be wrong about that.
-The battle system is fun and engaging. I'd call it a mashup between Paper Mario style timed hits and Megaman Battle Network-esque three lane combat where attacks have certain ranges as well as patterns that they can hit. there is a downside to this but we'll get to that in a second.
-There are quite a few secrets to find as well as hidden bosses. Most of them open up right before the endgame so it becomes a nice little break/wrap up before the end
-Puzzles are pretty simple for the most part, not too complicated. As well as generally the game does a good job of steering you in whatever direction you need to go for your current objective, usually by incorporating the party's current thoughts which is pretty cute ngl
-There's a lot of accessibility options, from auto-skipping battles to making to where you can't fail a timed hit and a lot inbetween. It's very approachable which I appreciate.
-Whatever else I missed lol
Neutral:
-The story is....alright. That sounds bad but bear with me. It starts out with a very easy premise: you're an ordinary but your sister's gone missing and you need to go find her at Hogwarts but good. To your surprise, you somehow obtain magical powers. so your quest begins, along the way picking up party members, opening up more and more of the campus and advancing the story. This is fine, but it gets very JRPG in the sense that you're constantly running around doing something else/getting some item/finding a person/etc. who will give you a thing/open up the path forward/blah blah blah you get the idea. it happens so often it gets pretty tiring. At a certain point I just learned to roll with the punches bc I was invested but from the negative reviews, people did not seem to gel with this which I can understand. The rest of the story itself is servicable, filled with the usual RPG stuff you'd expect: melodrama, occasional party infighting, there's an ice queen who defrosts over time, the characters are all kinda tropey to an extent but still enjoyable. Probably the highlight for me was the main character's depressive episode after a revelation and then subsequent recovery.
Cons:
-The mid to late game battle system. Towards the end, you really have to nail those timed hits or else it's gonna hurt, even with good gear. this also applies to your hits because if you miss, you're gonna do like 2 damage tops when you should be doing like 20. It can get very frustrating to the point that I would recommend changing your accessibility settings to be less punishing because of this. Timed hits can also feel inconsistent to where you swear you hit a great but instead you get an oops! but ymmv on that
-The game is also pretty over-balanced. It's like your power scales pretty evenly throughout the entire game rather than hitting that JRPG god-tier power you'd expect from a game like this. This is really exemplified around Level 25 or so when you basically get very few power increases, as if the game didn't expect you to get that high. it almost makes me wonder why they didn't just add a level cap. And sure, at that point you can stomp basic enemies into the ground with a one tap but at that point, why would you even bother?
That's really all I got. I'd honestly recommend giving it a shot, at least give it that 2 hour steam refund window. but if based on my or other's criticisms you think you're gonna bounce off it, obviously don't do that then. But like I said at the start, I think there's a lot more good than bad here, so I do recommend it in the end

My only complaint is that it's a bit easy--I would have liked a hard mode. But everything else going on in this game is great, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.

+ L'aspect LGBTQ+ peut aider plus de joueurs à s'identifier aux personnages, donc c'est un ajout que je trouve plutôt pertinent sans pour autant que ça prenne une ampleur majeur dans l'histoire; ce qui apporte une forme de fluidité.
+ J'apprécie la présence des p'tits chansons !
+ Petits chats qui sauvegardent votre partie si vous les caressez.

Well written with a very cute pixel art style that feels almost like something out of rpg-maker, in a good way. I'm a sucker for timed hit mechanics, helped keep the battles engaging, and I love how mana isn't a system for these characters and the magic is more of an innate part of their playstyle. Each character felt enjoyable and different enough to use, with their own personal story developments adding to it. Cool little secrets to find, which are always a bonus, I'd say it was a good experience, solid 8/10
Final Update : Worse then I could have imagined. No pay off for the end. Final boss is a "out of no where" but also not really and it's a big let down. They gloss over any actual impact the end could have had for a non-offensive ending. If everyone in this world is gay, how do they keep the population? Come on guys, you want inclusion but you didn't actually have inclusion. That aside, the game-play is good and the only thing that carries the game. Seeing Ze and Zir is just so out of place. My theory was not correct but would have been a much better and dramatic ending, you know actual writing! Why is the last boss easier then the 2nd to last boss? The "lost sister" has no pay off and she doesn't deserve the happy ending she got because there was only a few scenes showing her that were there to make you think something else. I did call/predict the one twist that came true at the very very end after the credits. (Like I said predictable but also not predictable but in a very bad way)
Oh and the end credits song... wow what a pile of ♥♥♥♥♥. Why did only a few of the characters get lyrics in their "theme song"... I could go on for paragraphs but I'll stop, it's not worth my time.
I never give scores but for this I have to. Story 1/10 Game-play 9/10.
Update 2 : Yet it still manages to be worse. I thought it was very predictable before and it just keeps NOT surprising me because I can tell what's going to happen. Also just about every other character is just so badly written and cookie cutter forced to be "non-conforming" it's laughable. I mean if you want to do inclusion at least TRY and be good about it. The game-play is the ONLY reason I'm still playing.
Update : Oh god the writing got worse! At least the combat is fun.
Mixed so far. Most of the characters are annoying and VERY cookie cutter stereotypes. Also why is it that everyone in the game has to be LGBT? Look, I'm an ally and all but come on, not everyone is "gender fluid". You want inclusion, I get that, that's great. However that also means you need some other types in there too. You go all in like that and it just feels forced. Also why are kids/very young teens constantly saying someone else is cute or hot? Needless to say the writing is pretty rough.

Drawn in by cats and magic, stayed for the deeper than I anticipated JRPG gameplay and story-line. Some boss fights were challenging for me, but I got through them because I was invested in the story. The characters show growth throughout the game, and they did a great job with the music matching the tone of the moment. I enjoyed it!
Undeniably a lovely game, really wish people played this more since I barely see any sort of fanbase surrounding Ikenfell at all
Ikenfell is by far the queerest game I have ever played. I do appreciate the representation, but it can be a bit much. Not that it's a detriment, but as the story progressed it got a bit silly. However, the writing was decent, mostly, and it didn't come across as pandering... just a bit hamfisted at times. The gameplay itself was solid. The battle system was inspired by megaman battle network... but it does get repetitive. Around the halfway point of the game you get the best character. And it just makes all battles battles of attrition over difficult. The hidden bosses just really show it too. Not difficult, just gets tedious. But, that brings to mind a different strength of the game... accessibility options. One of which I had no problem enabling... "Instant win battles" for these long annoying fights. So overall, I'd say it's a pass and instead you can read any of your favorite gay star wars fanfiction.

游戏性很强，三个支线每个都很有特色，战斗不仅仅是战斗，还能反映人物性格，那个独眼巨人书boss是个胆小鬼，我一靠近它它就发动传送魔法把我丢到离它最远的位置。
装备名称很有趣，马尔福女孩有根魔杖叫“独生子”。
好久没玩过这样有质感的好游戏了，通关之后甚至想再玩一遍，想重新看一遍人物对话。希望这样的好游戏能再多一些。
Incredible game, I really enjoyed the characters and interactions !
I'm on my third playthrough of this game and just as in love with it as ever. Where to begin? The story is well told through well-rounded and exceptionally queer characters. The music is catchy, well-attuned to the mood of the plot, and never gets old. The battle system is novel and fun. The environment you get to walk around gives a sense of awe. And I appreciate all the accessibility settings!! The options to make the game easier or harder, or more usable or tolerable to those with photosensitivity or phobias or triggers, are such important assets and they are implemented so well. I feel like there is nothing wrong with this game? Is it possible to say a game is perfect? I dunno, the spooky archive is sometimes too dark to see well, which I guess is the point, so never mind. Yeah as far as quick-time-turn-based-combat story-driven queer-af RPGs go, this is probably true perfection. If that's what you're looking for, welcome home to Ikenfell!
Le jeu est sympa et a de bons points. C'est relativement joli, le design des salles casse pas trois pattes à un canard mais marche, le système de combat est bien pensé mais... mais c'est LOOOOONG. Bordel, que c'est long. Le moindre combat avec une bêbête du coin vous prend grand minimum 5 minutes et les boss, j'en parle même pas. C'est ce qui m'a fait lâcher : je viens de passer une heure sur un boss, j'ai perdu parce que plus d'objets de soin, il lui restait moins de 10 PV, faut tout se retaper...
Alors sur le principe, c'est cool comme système de jeu mais pas assez bien adapté. Il y a peu d'ennemis et ils sont relativement facile à éviter donc on pourrait se dire que bon, le jeu ne veut pas que vous passiez du temps dans les combats, que vous pouvez juste vous limiter aux boss mais non, vous avez BESOIN de pexer pour débloquer les sorts et surtout avoir de l'argent pour les équipements et les objets de soin. J'en suis arrivée à un stade où j'en ai juste marre de farmer pour des thunes et devoir me retaper un combat d'une heure contre un boss random. J'arrête là, tant pis.
Si vous voulez jouer à ce jeu, je vous conseille de prévoir du lexomil pour gérer l'impatience.

Reading negative reviews makes me think I played a completely different game. I know player experience may vary but I think most of the negative reviews are either too harsh or the game is just not someone's cup of tea.
As for me, finally playing Ikenfell was a great decision. The battles were never tiring (enemy attacks were so well telegraphed that most of the time it was possible to get them right even on the very first try), the story was enjoyable, the humor was good and the vocalized songs were a pleasant surprise. I loved all those tiny QoL features like highlighting items that can be used outside of battle or a party member that temporarily cannot be switched out.
I wholeheartedly recommend this game.
Definitely has some cringe moments, but honestly, it was heartfelt and a solid rpg to play.

Very cute and cozy. Fun and diverse cast of characters, the interpersonal drama felt pretty real without being too cliche. Enjoyed the combat for the most part, could have greatly benefited from a "training" mode to get used to the timings on the attacks or some kind of graphical signal for when you're supposed to press (some attacks it was obvious, others I felt like I was just guessing). Enjoyed exploring the school grounds and getting to know all the characters. I don't believe the devs have any other projects yet, but I am definitely looking forward to what they put out next.
Coming in and finally writing a review a couple months after my second play-through of the game, and I can only say good things about it! I really love the story, characters, gameplay, music, really everything there is to it! I truly cannot recommend it enough if you love turn-based RPGs featuring a bunch of queer characters with so much to discover. :3
Incredibly fun classic RPG experience, the timing system is not to difficult and makes the fights much more interesting, wonderful story and characters with and beautiful message.
Pretty solid tactical RPG, with an interesting world and the queerest cast of almost any title.
Gameplay is decent, even if it does use the timing based stuff I despise. I still despise Super Mario RPG for introducing that mess. The timing based stuff can be turned off as an accessibility feature, either always hitting "good" or always hitting "great". There are a bunch of other accessibility options as well, which is always nice to see (screenshake and excessive flashing bother my vertigo).
Combat is in a small grid, with your party of 3 starting on the right and the foes on the left. Skills act in certain areas, and you learn new spells and attacks throughout the game. There are traps (usable by both you and enemies) and if a unit hits one their turn is ended. The only really frustrating attacks are ones that forcibly move your characters, especially if you're setting up for a very limited range buff. Since the player and enemy actions are using a timing based system, animations can't be sped up so fights do take longer than I would like sometimes. There are a lot of fights too.
Exploration is rewarded, there are a LOT of secrets, most of them have some sort of cue that there's something there. That said, the loot and equipment only feels like you're barely keeping up with the foes. At end game, even with a high power setup, you're only going to be doing 20-30 damage with most attacks on an offensive character and 10-15 on a support character. You do about half that at the very beginning of the game, so it's basically a doubling of damage over the course of an entire game. It feels like you don't really have much combat growth over the course of the game, as the enemy stat inflation makes it so you just maintain most of the damage with all the new gear you find.
Sound and music are good, there are several voiced songs. I personally don't like Ima's theme song, but it's just that I don't really like that musical style. It's still a good song and fits with the character. A few theme songs are almost never heard, you only get to hear Rook's well during their trial.
Characters are fine, though I don't really like all the high school style drama. That's just due to my age, being 25+ years past high school and not having fond memories of that time. The overarching story is good, even with one lingering plothole (memory and knowledge of the events should start disappearing, according to the lore you find in game). It's otherwise good.
There are also 3 optional bonus bosses, all very gimicky and challenging. These fights will definitely test your ability to put together a cohesive party and deal with what comes your way.
Overall pretty good if you like tactical RPG's, it's not a super long title (~15 hours including bonus content).

Unfortunately, even after all these years, the game is still only available in English and Japanese, with no plans for a Chinese translation.
Some have described it as an LGBTQ+ version of Hogwarts.

The battle system is simple in a way that's interesting and challenging, even if you're slightly over-leveled.

A wonderful, beautiful little game. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about it until it was four years old; it needs way more attention!
The presentation is top notch. The GBA-style pixel graphics are colorful, cute, and smoothly animated. The soundtrack has everything: calming overworld music, upbeat character ballads, thick dungeon moods, and banger battle tracks. As for my favorites, “It’s Showtime” is pretty upbeat, especially with the lyrics, then I found “Yearn to Bloom” just enchanting, but when its sister track “Rose Thorns” hit me… OOH!
The gameplay is very well designed, alternating between tactical RPG combat and overworld puzzles. The single-button prompts and forgoing of mana make combat elegantly straightforward. The former makes it possible to respond to attack patterns on the fly, while still requiring effort to learn the correct timing. The latter means the flow of battle is never forcibly interrupted, so it’s always your choice what strategies you want to implement. Each magic spell scales with your level and has a different AOE, so they never become obsolete, you simply find which ones suit your play style the best, with the narrow three-lane field encouraging you to mix things up, and experience sharing between all party characters allowing you to use any combination of characters, though the first half of the game requires you to include the main character in the battle rotation, and places a couple restrictions here and there until the mid-to-late game.
The game certainly isn’t difficult. This is fine in the overworld, where puzzles and secrets skew easy but remain engaging, and with the generous objective markers and medium-small dungeon sizes, you’ll have a hard time getting stuck or lost. The combat, on the other hand, requires self-imposed limits to be challenging, and gets a little slow and repetitive if you engage too many enemies. My normal play style is to try defeating every individual encounter once and otherwise try to avoid them. When I got to the endgame, I had to stop buying items to give myself a real challenge, and I still cleared the final boss in two attempts and beat one of the secret bosses in one try at the same levels (25-26). There is also an embarrassment of riches when it comes to money from battles and equipment from chests, and the best weapons can be obtained pretty easily near the end of the game. Enemies are very avoidable, and running from battles is a free action, so keep this in mind if you find yourself tiring of battles or want a steeper challenge.
That’s my only significant issue with the game. It and the lack of replay value make me understand why this is a “very positive” game instead of an “overwhelmingly positive” game. However, I was surprised to see a handful of complaints directed elsewhere, with some of the negative reviews calling the story and characters “shallow.” I actually saw these a bit early in my playthrough, when I was really enjoying the characters, so I waited to see if these warnings came true. Things slowed down a bit in the mid-game, and I felt maybe I was setting up for disappointment, but by the end I was satisfied and therefore confused again. I do wish some implications set up by the lore were explored a little more, but it doesn’t make the story hollow. Once I took a step back, things made a little more sense to me. My response to those reviewers is that [i]simple[/i] is not the same as [i]shallow[/i]. Just because characters have simple problems that are explained in the text doesn’t make them two-dimensional or the story badly told. The core theme of the game is about the consequences of keeping secrets and hiding burdens, how facing hardships alone only causes more hardship for the bearer and the people they care about. This is reflected in all of the main protagonists and antagonists in unique, distinguishable ways, with a lone exception proving the rule by being a humble, cooperative leader who helps guide some of the other characters through those problems. Most of the story complaints don’t go into specifics, so I’m inclined to think that these feelings are byproducts of a lack of investment in the game rather than incisive criticisms. I don’t mean to rag on these critics; the story and characters won’t resonate with everyone, but don’t believe for a second that they have no substance.
As someone who played [i]Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga[/i] growing up and who wishes they could have watched [i]The Owl House[/i] growing up, I can see my glasses being slightly rose-tinted when it comes to this game, but it really does have a charm all its own, and I happily recommend it.

Weird nitpicks that I moved to the end to avoid dragging out the review proper:
I can think of no significant complaints for the visuals, though it does look a little funny when overworld sprites nod their heads in profile. For the music, I only have two complaints. One, the credits don’t have original music, just extended versions of character themes that aren’t even arranged in a medley, though it makes up for this with some original after-credits music. Two, “Paint the Future” is a little overused, and the lyrical version takes me out of the fantasy setting. It’s not because it’s a rap; the lyrical version of “Between the Lines” suits the setting just fine, but it only shows up in one optional fight. Even then, PtF is a good tune, and there are no bad tracks.
A very charming story-driven RPG. Whether you connect with the characters and the story will depend on each person I think.
The combat is very well designed, and feels really good even in the random encounters. It rewards careful positioning, and while the timing gimmick can start to feel tiresome after a while, each spell has a different timing to master, which keeps the combat fresh.
The art can be somewhat janky at times, but the music is noteworthy and has some bangers.
Overall, Ikenfell was an excellent experience, which I recommand heartily.
The truly best part about this game is the cast of characters. Just a bunch of solid cuties all around. Music is really great, too.
Combat is pretty fun with the Super Mario RPG-esque timing-based actions and defenses, and it's helpful that there's a way to simplify in the options that if you start to get bored of it.

While it did start a bit slow for my tastes (It took me longer than expected to get INTO the school which I thought was going to be the starting point) meeting all the characters and discovering hidden stuff was very fun! :D
Especially Ima and Gilda were my favorites from the "main cast". Ibn and Bax had (obviously) great energy together as well. :')
Also, saving the game by petting cats is great and should be done more often. <3 I did kinda expect to use Marittes sister as a saving point when we finally found her. Bcs her calm breathing sure should have calmed the anxious mind and restored HP. :P
The option of choosing between automatic, semi-automatic and manual for fighting is a wonderful thing and super helpful for anyone that doesn't enjoy or can't press buttons with great timing. I tried it out inside one tower and it removed some stress while still allowing the strategic use of skills and positions to shine.
Lastly, the soundtrack is great. I'll probably hear it a lot in the future. Currently Paint the future is stuck on repeat inside my mind. <3

Edit: In case anyone is wondering if the game is only 2 hours long (as my time stamp might suggest), it took me around 23 hours to finish the game and there are still some archievements left. Steam just didn't count my offline game time
Genuinely the most incredible story I have ever experienced. No book, movie, or any other type of media I have interacted with has made a story this complex and compelling to me as this game. There are so many novel and unexpected twists and the characters are so interesting.
This game is so inclusive with so many different types of representation and it feels very natural. All the characters are very unique and have very cool backstories and development.
The enemies all feel very unique and interesting. Every boss fight there is something very new and it is fun to figure out how to counter the new moves.
The progression of the game feels very well defined. I never had to struggle with "what the heck am I supposed to do now".
The fighting style being turn based combat makes it very accessible to me as a disabled gamer. The combat is a lot more about strategy / like a puzzle as it is turn based.
I really liked Ikenfell. The story keeps moving in different directions, and the game's art style is very cute. The combat can be kinda slow sometimes, and both attacking and defending need timed button presses and some of those timings are very precise, but there are settings that can bypass this if you want. Some of the events in the game can be kinda heavy, which I wasn't expecting because of the cute style. But the game is fun! And I did like the story, even if it did go places I didn't anticipate. Also the music is really good, like REALLY good.

Very good game. Very feel-good story, and all of the characters are interesting. I love that they included an epilogue as well and wrapped things up nicely. The boss fights were AMAZING, (except a few) and the story made the game for me, just learning about the world.
OH ALSO, the musical numbers during fights was shocking at first but immediately became one of my favorite parts of the game. (The one fight with three certain individuals comes to mind for me).
Only complaints is the last 2 bossfights scaled up in difficulty pretty hard and shocked me as I didn't prep much for them, as well as some characters appearing more later without them getting enough "screen time", like Bax and Ibn, and some of those professors, would have liked a little more on them. Other than that, the game was great. rough around the edges in very few parts but about 98% of the time I was having a blast.

Ikenfell é um jogo indie magnifico, que dá pra sentir que foi feito com muito carinho. As batalhas são extremamente divertidas, os diálogos são muito bem escritos, e as personagens tem uma ótima representatividade no jogo e uma profundidade de personalidade muito satisfatória de se ver.
Amei demais cada minuto que joguei desse jogo, tenho um carinho muito grande por toda a história e aos personagens <3

I do like the setting that allows the fights to auto "great" since then I can focus on the story more. It is awesome for people who want a challange and those who wish for an easier fighting experience.
