Played the game because of Pirate Software and the OST. OST is worth the money in my opinion. Good music, some of them are very catchy. In terms of gameplay, there is story, but not much of it unless you know about Jason and his upbringing a little bit. Almost requires another game or a better prologue. NPCs can be interesting, but the game is not what I expected. The last area isn't finished, and based on the developer updates, it seems that Pirate Software is focusing on the "Darksider" path to the game over the "Guardian" path. If it is supposed to be a game he made that was inspired by Toby Fox's "Undertale", it misses the mark for being it. It's easy to get lost once you save the game and pick it back up after a few days. And I refuse to touch the drama surrounding the Pirate Software Incorporation, Jason Thor Hall, and anyone employed with them. I wish no ill will to them, and I wish them the best.

Note that I haven't played this in a LONG time, so some stuff may be improved or I may be wrong on some of this. I'm aware that's probably unfair and I'm planning on giving it another chance someday, because I do hope things have gotten better, but I sadly doubt it.
If they HAVE gotten better, uh, sorry for being this negative about a version of the game that's clearly leagues worse than the current one.
The fact this game is going at a snail's pace to update is just ONE of the issues.
The gameplay sucks ass and when I decided to do more than one playthrough (for some reason) it was really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring. The combat sounds interesting on paper but it's just... not. I could only find one fight, and while I'm aware there is another, having most of your players be aware of only ONE combat encounter unless they bother to do a specific series of actions to access another one is just irritating.
The art isn't actually that bad. I don't have much to say on it.
The writing's awful and can get fairly on-the-nose.
I'm also pretty sure the developer actively refuses to listen to any sort of criticism, so I'm not sure why I even bothered to type all of this.
Just... don't buy the game.

When I bought this game, I was excited to play it through, thinking that having been released back in 2018 with previous development and a successful kickstart campaign that the game would be closer to being released, but after years of "monthly" updates, with little to no actionable content updated, and still no end in sight, I cant recommend this game to be purchased, certainly not at full price
Do not waste your money on this incomplete game made by an egotistical Youtuber. As of March 7, 2026, the developer has nuked all community threads along with the comment sections from all the updates to silence any and all criticism of the game.
FOR A GAME ABOUT PROMOTING "POSITIVITY", THE DEVELOPER IS THE COMPLETE ANTITHESIS OF THE GAME'S MESSAGE. There are better games on Steam that discuss similar message of mental health that are COMPLETE, better executed, and do come with the baggage if inherited toxicity as this game. I regret having spent $10 on this game back in 2024 and I would refund the game today if I could.
I bought this game under the assumption that I was supporting another developer who loved the art.
The early access “release” has, for all intents and purposes, concluded in a way that feels like a short sell of what I originally believed was promised (my fault as an early access buyer).
The existing game’s core features, tho lacking to some measures, might be worth a recommendation except that the creator has demonstrated that his own ethical and moral compass aligns with his own game’s antagonist.
That wouldn’t be mentionable as a personal objection except that I’m forced to swallow the cost of this “game” because the “updates” over the last several years keep it skirting the liability of abandonment by adding a new dialog option once in a while.
Given the option I’d suggest “buying” Star Citizen. You’ll still be buying vaporware but at least you’d still occasionally get some new shoes or something
Game has been in early access for 8 years and remains unfinished, not only is this the case but the developer's god complex and idiotic grifting is what prevents this horrible attempt at an UNDERTALE clone from ever being finished. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

It's a very interesting, fun and engaging game. But I can imagine it not being everyone their cup of tea.
For that I recommend to play the free demo as that gives a great indication on if you will or won't enjoy the game. Gameplay wise the demo does not differ from the main game itself. It only limits what part of the story you can get.
The best way I can describe this game is an interactive story, mixed up by exploration, fun minigames and jokes. A lot of jokes.
But where the game shines strongest for me is it's interactivity. Every action you take feels like it has consequences. Something simple as not putting on your sweater, or not picking up an item while exploring can have consequences down the line. And the way you interact and respond to characters also result in how the characters change and respond. It really made me think sometimes "hmm.. was i maybe to harsh in my response"
But that makes the game interesting to do multiple playthroughs of. You notice the game starts to feel different when you're either nice or bad to others. The story evolves with how you play, instead of it being a set number of points where the choice really matters. Everything matters.
Art wise It's done very well, It looks simple, but at the same time is very well drawn and detailed. Even level designs look like everything is in a place for a reason and even the smaller details matter. Even if that small detail is only there to make the world look and feel more alive.
Soundtrack wise as well, it is very enjoyable to listen to. Music fits the game very well, and a lot of times it felt like the music was a great addition to the gameplay itself happening. A very strong part as there is no voiced dialogue in the game. And at this point with how well the music is incorporated, I believe voiced dialogue would take away from the game and how it feels.
I am very curious as how the story and game progresses further.
Wish I could get my money back. Kickstarted this game way back in 2018 and have nothing to show for it. Updates add nothing. At this point, there should be a mass refund and removal from the store until it's finished.
I'm not part of the LOLCOW Pirate Software suffered, I'm just stating one single truth: The game doesn't worth your money, if you want to have a great experience, play the Demo and that's it. The full version only adds a bunch boring exploration and talking to NPCs. The best experience is the Demo.

I only have about 4.5 hours in the game, but I have had so much fun in this game! The puns are fully groan worthy 🤣, the collectables are fun to look for, and the choose your own adventure mechanics allow for multiple replays to see what different choices get you!
The dialogue between characters is engaging and gets you invested in Lore's story as you progress through the game! Looking forward to another playthrough as more sections get added! So much content for an Early Access game!
The behavior like this should be punished by Steam. It's not just a bad game, but the developer is actively scamming the supporters by telling them the game is being worked on, and that it will be finished, which is simply not true. You can easily confirm this out by checking the dev stream.
Release date is telling as well, as no game should be in early access this long. That's just a scam at this point.

Não sei se, por não ter pego o hype pelo Undertale, tenha chego sem muitas expectativas e simplesmente achei um jogo medíocre, com gameplay repetitiva e com personagens que eu não me apeguei nem um pouco. Tem jogos melhores para se jogar e não sentir que perdeu tempo em algo inacabado e superficial.

так жаль: в прошлом у игры действительно проглядывался потенциал. ну, пока в ленте новостей игры не начали спамить мелочными обновлениями и текстом ради текста без весомых изменений. то же самое и с Дискорд-сервером разработчиков, в котором пинги о стримах с разработкой по КД появляются просто ради... имитации активности? я правда не понимаю, почему даже часть локаций не была расширена за все эти ГОДЫ.
любопытные механики, разные миры, хоррорная составляющая, вечная недосказанность, крутая пиксельная графика, некоторые прикольные саундтреки и намёки на проработанную историю - всё ради того, чтоб игра по сей день носила плашку "Игра в раннем доступе".

This game is simply bad, the gameplay is non existent, and the writing is not enjoyable.
Jason "Thor" Hall is a coward who shuts down and deletes every discussion on the steam discussion board because he tries his best to avoid accountability for scamming his kickstarter backers with this unfinishable walking simulator.
The good thing about the game is that it's very inclusive towards mentally-deficient people. The puzzles are so easy that even people with the lowest IQ can solve them, no thinking is required. In the industry, this is known as DSP-proof game design. Even if you lose in a fight, nothing will change and the story will progress as normal.
Maldavius Figtree, aka Pirate Software, claimed that to see how much content is hidden in this game, you need to leave the house in your pyjamas. I can assure you that this is a lie, a few sprite changes and a few lines of dialogue are nothing major, don't fall for that.
Earthbound/Undertale wannabe but feels unfocused lacking consistency in any gameplay mechanics.
Story appears to want to send a heartfelt message but interjects magical otherworld elements that really aren't intorduced or explained well at all holding no cosistency in what has been released to play.
While the game is in EA direct comparison can be drawn to Ch1 (Demo) of Deltarune. Story is actually introduced and gameplay has a clear direction as to what a buyer can expect for the finished product. None of this can be said about Heartbound.
Not worth supporting in EA, might be better on completion, but Dev time has taken far too long for what feels like an RPG maker game without any large gameplay setpieces or combat outside of a single section that doesn't return.
Art and music are actually quite impressive, but for a story focused game they can't save it alone.
Im not someone who usually leave bad review on a game, even when i dislike it.
But in this case, i have a very good reason to do so.
While i don't hate the game, i think it was okay from what i played, my issues are somewhere else.
I know about this game since 2018-2019 and bought it 3 years ago. The thing is, the game haven't changed at all since. We have 'updates' every month but that's the bare minimum just to keep steam from marking it abandoned.
The dev delete every negatives comments about the game and even ban some people for doing so. Every threads get locked and by the way, at the moment, everything from the threads forum is deleted and you cannot write something anymore.
The most frustrating part is the dev not admitting anything. At least be trustful about the game being abandonned. Because i lost complete trust in this project and i won't buy anything ever again from 'PirateSoftware'.

This game will never be complete. Every update is the smallest thing it could possibly be, often at the size of KB and not even MB. Updating a game to keep it from being booted from early access for being abandoned with the smallest amount of effort just rubs me the wrong way.
The way I see it it should either be work on the game in earnest, or be truthful that it's abandoned.

1. The biggest issue overall, is that I don't care at all about the dog we're meant to be saving. The game doesn't really build up any kind of bond between you and the dog before the dog is taken. And, I don't really feel like the bond is going to get better. The closest example is "To the Moon", where they built up the story line after a while, and then went I actually cared what was happening. Even an event such as Lore's parents giving him the dog at the beginning, and then dying or something would give me a reason to care
2. Its already getting fairly repetitive after 1/2 hour. Some parts just keep going so far..
3. I feel like the dog should talk less honestly, and a relationship should be established without talking.
4. I feel like the game is being developed a bit slowly. It is in early access.. But, as others have mentioned, it was released 7-8 years ago now.... It probably shouldn't have been released to early access if 7 years later, apparently, the end storyline is still being developed apparently (I haven't finished the game yet). I feel like after 7 years of development, I should at least care about the dog I'm rescuing a bit..
5. The dialogue with the dog feels robotic.. People don't talk to their pets like that (at least, nobody in my households I've lived in)

Its been more than 7 years since this is on steam. We totally deserve a refund Thor.
I was initially supportive of this project, but that support is completely gone.
After many years, the game remains unfinished and extremely limited in content. The amount of progress does not come close to justifying the time it has been in development.
Just as importantly, confidence in the project has eroded due to how criticism and concerns are handled. Legitimate feedback about scope, direction, and progress is dismissed rather than addressed, making continued development difficult to trust.
At this point, I have no interest in waiting, giving further benefit of the doubt, or supporting this project in any form. I sincerely regret buying it.
I was really hyped for this game when I got to see the demo 8 years ago. When I finally found it again, I was so happy that I bought it on the spot. Unfortunately, development has dropped to such a slow pace that I've pretty much lost all hype for it, with the game being in almost the exact same state for the last 3.5 years. The combat I enjoyed so much from the demo never made a reappearance (despite the large emphasis they put on that feature on the steam page) and with how slow the game is moving, it'll probably be another 8 years if it ever does come back.
I'll give it another shot when it comes out for real, but currently it's really not worth playing.
I think we all deserve a refund for this game.

Painfully generic writing filled with Discord in jokes, Saturday night RPG from a decade ago got Heartbound beat writing, gameplay and story wise. Pirate copied Tobyfoxës homework right down character archetypes. Puzzles if you can call them that are from Babby tutorial to RPGs 101. There isnt anything inteeresting, new or anything worth your time.

Despite my big excitement for what this game promised, i am incredibly disappointed. I used to watch dev streams and check out new updates, but it has been so many years, and the game barely added 3-4 new scenes. IT'S IN EARLY ACCESS FOR YEARS!!! It's ridiculous. The developer isn't interested in the project anymore and keeps it moving along in a snail pace to not make people even more upset.
If i were to sum up this game, i have to call it just a painful lesson about buying things in early access i guess.
Seriously, don't buy this. It's gonna be finished when you'll be on your deathbed, if ever. The gameplay isn't worth it either. It's basically the same experience as watching it somewhere.
Bland, boring and derivitive. And to add to that unfinished, after years of development work.
I got this game because of the combat system, but there is literally a total of 2 fights in the whole game, and they're against the same enemy.
On top of that, those 2 fights are the only fun bits of gameplay in the entire game, the entire game feels like padding.
Me and a friend bought this to give it a far shake given all the drama. It's not good. I'll go into some specifics but the overall tldr is that the game is bad on most levels with a few good bits here and there. Anyways:
ART:
* Art design is reasonably solid but not as good as it could be. Lots of discordant designs that clash. But taken individually everything is pretty good.
* The "job" area is perhaps the most eye straining thing I've ever played in a game. I have a high end monitor and considered turning reds off so my eyes could get a break. And it goes on for the entire level until the "boss."
* Flashbangs. Holy Batman the flashbangs. Periodically the game will just go full white for annoyingly long intervals. There is never a good reason for this, it just does it.
* Animations are the standout here for the nice little details. I like how Lore's hoody hood bounces with his idle animation.
Sound Design
* Effects are pretty good
* Music is a bit generic and weirdly not chiptune. It's also composed of very short loops so it's a bit grating if you hang out in an area too long
* Talking about grating, the "job" level's main area has keyboard and phone noises as part of its loop. After a few minutes I considered driving an icepick into my ears based on how awful it is. Thankfully you can mute it, however...
UI
* Menu is trash. When I muted the music I had to mute the entire game
* You pick up a bunch of collectables and other items but don't have an inventory to review them in so you don't get any flavor text
* Object interaction flavor text is normally really bad for no reason with occasional amusing bits. A lot of what I assume are references are slammed in here
* (Soapbox time) For some reason the big glowing button on the main screen doesn't start the game. It starts the twenty years of credits. I didn't know how to skip them for a minute so it took me 10 minutes until I got out of it. That was not a good start. The actual start button is "continue" for some reason
Characters
* There's a couple characters I like but most of them are annoying at best
* You get the necronomicon in the game (or at least a talking book) that doesn't have any character other than being a bit of jerk sometimes. Missed opportunity
* You have two Alien X faces that pop up sometimes and talk about you in vague language that are both a distraction and painfully uninteresting. They aren't present in the early game for some reason
* Lore is a bad MC. His contributions are pretty frequent but almost never offer anything interesting. I would have preferred he stayed a silent protag
Gameplay
* Kinda sucks all the way around really
* The main boss fight shown on the store page against shadow monster is the only fun gameplay. It happens twice but that's only a few minutes worth
* All other "gameplay sections" (of which there are only a handful) range from being truly awful (feeding the workers) to lame and annoying (picking up eggs)
Environment Design
* It's bad
* Areas aren't fun to move through and you end up pointlessly walking around for ages in many of them
* Areas aren't logically consistent. The Furry area just opens up new paths (and closes them) without explanation
Puzzles
* It's like the dev has never played a puzzle before
* You get a few easy ones that don't qualify as puzzles in my eyes
* You get one hard one that requires you know how Tennis scoring can be factored into word play. There is no hint to this so I'm not sure if it is much of a puzzle
Dialogue
* Generally overly filled with memes and references
* "____ animal noises" comes up several times like I'm in some kind of weird Furry discord
* Choices in dialogue are either "be good" or "attempt murder" which is strange while playing. Most choices don't really matter regardless
Story
* I played this game for hours and have no idea what I'm doing other than rescuing my dog who I guess is dead or something
* There's also Mommy issues Lore is working through
Completion
* There is a complete tutorial (Bully for them) it doesn't teach you the gameplay loop but that doesn't exist so it's fine
* The god awful "job" area is a complete area (no bullies for them)
* The furry area is mostly complete. My run through it end with a WIP section but it's possible that there are complete paths through it
* There's a lava area that seemed interesting but it has nothing in it
* The game is therefore less than half done
Conclusion
I went into this trying to be fair to the game. While I was able to find a few bits here and there that were good, it was so overwhelming bad it actually confuses me. The hate the dev is getting online is well justified as this game is worse than I expected.

For those who come thinking this is a cute, promising little RPG game: It was. In the beginning.
I bought the game in 2018. In its early stages, I thought Heartbound had simple and effective mechanics, charming art, and a mediocre but promising story. All of this made sense. It was an early build. I was excited to see where the game was headed and followed along with updates and streams. As far as I can remember, the developer did work on the game then. I remember watching Animus development tests and track reveals. Back then, I was still thinking about what I wanted to do in the future. And I have Pirate Software partly to thank for inspiring me to consider game development.
But passing onto 7 years, I genuinely believe this game will not be released, or if it does get released, that it will not be worth the wait. "Just make games," he said. These words are sound advice for aspiring developers. However, he could not back them up with his own actions. The developer's interest has gradually pivoted from making games toward streaming MMORPGS, community engagement, and giving general advice about the industry. While my life was moving forward and I was learning to code, to draw, to write, I still checked in with Heartbound every so often, only to see that the game had stayed the same.
Long development times are not always bad and do not equal abandonment, but my point is that we can all see it happening. Development began in 2015. After 10 years, the developer has been unable to fully justify why he isn't making the game. Everyone can see on Twitch, broadcast by him, the exact ways he is spending his time, which contradict his statements. I am disappointed because the developer is someone I used to look up to. Now, I no longer consider him a role model.
While recent updates do give the appearance of progress, I cannot recommend Heartbound with any sincerity at this time. I have neither hope that the game will release, nor interest in what comes out of it. Please have a good day.
Local CEO who abandoned game runs the leading campaign against a law that protects buyers of games that get abandoned. While the demo was decent for what it was, the paid version doesn't offer anything more interesting. If you enjoyed the demo, I would suggest buying Undertale instead.
it was very interactive and adorable. i was given this game by my mother that was watching the creation of it. she had gotten it for herself and i would always linger around her as she played. that's why she gifted it to me a little while back and i love it!

Bought this game way back when JackSepticEye played it. Since way back then the only thing added was animus and that barely has anything to it at the moment. After literal years in development all it has to show for it is an unfinished zone, 3 puzzles and really really cliche storytelling. I've read fanfics 10 years ago with better worldbuilding in it.
After rising to prominence in streaming the dev has relegated this game to his fall back plan hoping people give him more money for this joke of a game. Rust took less time to release out of early access.

Я сожалею, что потратил на эту "Игру" деньги. Игра за несколько лет так и не вышла в полноценный релиз. Русский язык не обновляют по причине: Ну знаете, санкции, все дела пук среньк... Можно же было найти другого переводчика, который даже без санкций всё переведёт! Я ждал, я верил, я надеялся, и всё зря...
A labor of love that is slowly growing over time. I haven't finished this yet, but I've enjoyed what i've played.

Story-rich, engrossing game where choices beget consequences. Delightful music and cute sprites. It subverts expectations and I love its humour! :)

A different kind of indie game, with a narrative focus, retro style, and for those who don't mind playing something that's still "under construction".Indie diferente, com foco narrativo, estilo retrô, e param quem não se importa de jogar algo que ainda está “em construção".
It was promising when I tried it in early access in 2018. Unfortunately, this game seems to only get some minor updates without or very little progression on the main story.
The dev also has started to give conflicting statements on the development progress and timeline on the game and its roadmap to completion.
I cannot reccomend this game nor the developer at this time (Nov '25)
If Sword with Sauce somehow has more dev time this year, you know something is wrong with your work/life balance. For the $10nzd you could spend on this game, instead buy an icecream. It will last about as long.
Game could be so great.. but it came out 7 years ago, and have very little content. I think this may be a lost cause. Don't bother for now. Worth relooking at if it ever actually gets completed.
Just stay away from this game. Worst 9 bucks ever spent.

The game is lacking content and it is not getting significant updates anymore. It is a fair price if the game was almost finished but I doubt it will ever be finished so I can not recommend this game.

He loves banning people from his chat and his stream, wonder sometimes if it's so you can't watch him not work on this unfinished game, years later.
its pretty unfinished and even with monthhly updates not alot is being added as they are purely being updated to keep the game from being marked as abandonded

conheço o jogo desde o início do seu desenvolvimento e até apoiei, achei o conceito bem dahora, mas nada de lançar o jogo, 7 anos já e nada ainda, não tem nada novo a um bom tempo e eu sinceramente não aguento mais esperar
This game is personally not for me. I enjoyed the demo, which led me to buy it. I played it a bit, saw that it was unfinished, and decided to wait a few years. The development was stagnant, and it remained in early access for quite a while.
Currently, with the amount of content available, I find the price too steep. There’s barely 2 to 3 hours of gameplay. I only reached that much because I played it three times to see if there was more than the game initially revealed.
Supposedly, there are a lot of different paths or dialogue sequences. However, I didn’t notice them. Maybe they’re too obscure. I found the story typical and not very interesting. The game-play was very boring.
At the current price and amount of content, I cannot recommend this game. You’re better off playing a game like Rakuen.
A delightfully lovely emotional story with multiple routes for interaction and fun mini games. I look forward to seeing more of it and to it's completion.
Cool idea, but seems to be near abandoned. Game is significantly unfinished and the only recent updates seem to be small bug fixes and very small bits of content
amazing and beautiful game, enjoyed every second and cannot wait to find out more about what Lore and his family are. Binder is by far my favorite character though!
Good price for a good Undertale-like RPG from what I've played. But it does have [strike]Undertale[/strike] development speeds [strike]as well[/strike]... I'm guessing it'll be a couple of years still before hitting 1.0?
I still eagerly await its completion and recommend it if you want to test it ahead of time.
I'll give it a proper review once it leaves early access...

I was actually hyped about this game, and a fan when I bought it many many years ago, but now I'm just disappointed.
Looking through my steam purchases, I bought this game at the same time as HollowKnight—
a stunning indie game which got its sequel already.
(but not before the fanbase was clowned for waiting for something "that's never coming".)
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they released Half-Life 3 before this comes out—if it does.
Unfortunate, as it felt like this had potential and was a passion project, which it clearly isn't.
