As I said in the review on the first game, this one is amazing. Adds more characters, more story, and then... just when you think "oh it's silly", they hit you AGAIN. And you meet The King.

The sequel, but [i]also[/i] a parallel universe(??), to the first game! This one seemed to focus more on the Holiday aspect. However, I prefer the first game, for a few reasons, but you can read my review of the game [url=https://steamcommunity.com/id/GizmoHaruhi/recommended/310080/]here![/url]

I didn’t like this sequel as much, mainly because it is [b]much much[/b] shorter than the first game. I completed this in under 2 hours, it took an hour to get through the four Episodes, whereas the first game took me over 4 hours, almost 5 hours if I remember correctly. But also, because there was a lack of dialogue choices, and choosing what class to study, I wish we had seen something much similar to that, where it explores how we can interact with a certain bird in a day, or in an episode, which is the charm that Holiday Star was missing. I had lost interest within the game, like after the First Episode, whereas the first game had me hooked immediately, but I still managed to power through it. And I’ll still gladly say Sakuya is still my favourite character! But Nageki is getting a very close first, but just under Sakuya, I loved how they explored him in this one!

I also [b]LOVED LOVED!![/b] ([i]Keyword[/i], loved, right here) The upgraded human designs for each character, I think my jaw was on the floor when I saw Sakuya's human design. He definitely had a glow up in this game, and I loved seeing that quite a lot! ♡

I feel this wasn’t as polished, and as interesting, as the first game was, this was more episodic, and of course, you can easily fail the game/get a “Game Over”, I got that in the Second Episode. But it took ages to get to where I failed originally, because the “Fast Forward” button wasn’t as fast as the first game was. I did like the Episodic moments, and going back to the episodes to see the bad endings, but I didn’t like the ideology of continuously putting the name in per Episode, as in the first game, you’re just the name you’ve given the main character ([b]if[/b] you’ve changed it from [u]Hiyoko Tosaka[/u]), I do know as well that the original version of Hatoful Boyfriend had “Game Overs”, but they decided to remove that from the current version that we currently have.

I did notice as well, how the BBL ending wasn’t continued in Holiday Star, and how all the characters were living a normal life, and just being oblivious. And I still had some questions that I needed an answer from from the BBL ending, and Holiday Star didn’t seem to give that to me. However, there was some foreshadowing (I love those!!!) in a storyline which also introduced some new characters; [b]The Day the Night Slept[/b]. So, I think people will like that storyline, I, myself for certain did!

I’ll still, however, recommend this game, to those who did enjoy the first game, and are Hatoful fans, like myself. But if you’re someone who is looking for a long-ish storyline, unfortunately you may not find yourself liking this one, but I’d personally say get it on sale, and who knows? It may be worth it for you! <3

It is a fantastic sequel to Hatoful Boyfriend and felt like it was made for me with how prominent my two favourite characters were in it. But everybirdie gets their time to shine! It, same as the first game, has a great story that goes way deeper than one would think of this game.

Oh also, this game features some amazing art when it comes to the backgrounds! I was in awe, seeing them.

Holiday Star takes place in a sort of parallel universe to the original yet still acts as a sort-of sequel. It's very similar to the original in that it starts very comedic and random, but switches gears into a dark, serious story that makes you genuinely forget that these characters are actually just extra-large doves. It is genuinely emotional and has real narrative themes.
In particular, Holiday Star expands the story of Nageki and Kazuaki, who were my two favorites in the original. A must-play if you liked the original, and when it's on sale it's like $3 nowadays.

I had come into this game thinking that it'll be a deep game like the first one, but the first two chapters had made me think "Hm, maybe it's just a silly game after all and I put too much faith into this series. Surely it can never be as good as the first game."

I was so SO wrong.

I genuinely feel like they're tackling more difficult issues and yet the writing style seems more beautiful than the previous game. We learn more about the backstories of the birds, as well as their motivations and fears. The art is PHENOMENAL. I immediately bought the collector edition because I simply adored the backgrounds that are in the game.

For Nageki lovers, rejoice. He takes a bigger role in this game and I can say I sobbed really hard at a few moments.

I don't want to spoil anything because I truly believe the best way to experience this game is go into it blind, but it always fascinates me how Hatomoa can write such bittersweet stories that always hit me right in the heart.

In conclusion, this game didn't disappoint at all when compared to the first game. I love the Hatoful Boyfriend series so much and I truly hope more people can love it too.

I wish I could give this a 'recommended', but I can't because of the technical issues. There was lag on the text and the screen would often freeze and crash. My computer was easily capable of playing the first game so I'm not sure what went wrong here. I bought this game a long time ago and only played it recently so it's possible the 'Dove Actually' version fixes these issues, but I didn't want to buy the game again.

As for the content. It is a good showcase of the original characters, but has very few choices. The main character is stuck on a Nageki route romantically over the main story, and the only place in the game you can spend time with a different bird (one of the short side stories) you can't insert your own player name.

I wish I could give a middle-thumb for this... because while this game series has been near and dear to my heart for so many years and I just spent my Christmas this year replaying this game on Steam... I can't find the DLC anywhere (which I admittedly double-bought because I originally bought the Dove Actually edition, but then when I finally went to play, I couldn't find it and the DLC's store page said it wasn't in my library, so I gaslit myself into believing I hadn't bought the bundle at all... here it's apparently a weird glitch, per a forum from 2015).

All of the advice everything gives me is outdated (there's no local/installed files tab under Properties anymore, despite Steam's own advice still suggesting this). I looked under steamapps > common > (the game's name) for it, but nothing's in there but my save file. I don't want to request a refund (which wouldn't work anyway lol), but the forums are dead and I have no idea who/where to reach out to about this otherwise! I just want the DLC I paid for (twice).

If anyone who could help me sees this, please send me a comment!

EDIT: Oh - and I forgot to mention that, despite the game being deemed "Playable" on Steam Deck, I couldn't play it at all on my Deck... It would launch but then immediately give me an error that it couldn't find some executable file, so I had to play it on my PC. Despite these few hang-ups, though, I do recommend the game! If only because the original is - as far as I know - unavailable or unplayable on modern OS's and versions of QuickTime.

Listen. This game is not good. It's honestly pretty tedious and loses even the tiny sliver of "gameplay" that the original had. But if you want more Hatoful Boyfriend, maybe 1/2 of this will give you exactly what you want. Well worth playing as a fascinating addition to the Hatoful franchise, but not worth playing in it's own merit.

There arent many games that can give a companion holiday game as well as they managed to in this one. You will want to play thru more than once so that you get to see everything. A pretty decent fan disc with a few silly and one serious side stories. The comedy, at its best, is even more hilariously over-the-top, and the drama, while weaker than in the original, still manages to evoke some feels and add details to the overarching story. Hatoful Boyfriend is an amazing game. It takes an unconventional approach to other otome games, and tells a powerful story with that. In the main game, after completing all routes, you're given the true, longer ending. It's an excellent game, and Holiday Star expands on that. It follows the characters as they navigate some strange, dreamy town. There's really emotional storytelling about some of the teacher characters and their pasts, and ♥♥♥♥ if it didn't make me love the adults in the game more. The main story is incredible and heartbreaking. And, once you've finished that, there are a lot of side stories to do too! As well as a little podcast Ryouta hosts. It's been nearly 10 years since I've played this game for the first time, and it still hits just as hard as it did the first time I played it.

Lepsza od podstawowej gry. Jest humor, jest dramat, są śmieszki i wzruszki. Więcej naszych ulubionych ptaków, a także nowa sympatyczna obsada i nowe czasem dosłownie baśniowe klimatyczne lokacje. [spoiler]그 악역이 떼쓰고 억지부리고 평소에 죽고 싶단 말을 입에 달고 살아서 '죽어 마땅해' 보일수록 실질 가해자인 우즈네, 그리고 악역과 대치하는 유우야가 더 선역으로 보일 거 아님?[/spoiler] 근데 사실 까보면 그냥 [spoiler]살인 정당화[/spoiler] 한 것에 불과함. 그것도 [spoiler]살인 피해자를 이용[/spoiler]해서 그랬다는 점이 상당히... ㄷㄷ.

Will not make a lick of sense if you haven't played the original [i]Hatoful Boyfriend[/i] all the way through. Fortunately, that's also great!

[i]Holiday Star[/i] is in many respects more of the same: a heap of the absurd with a strong horror undercurrent that gradually rises to the surface. But... they're all birds, so the absurd never goes away, and you're left with this perfectly ridiculous tension as the two feelings coexist.

I should also point out that I played the original [i]8 years ago[/i], and all the characters and about 98% of the insane, fever-dream lore came rushing back instantly. If that's not a testament to the quality of the writing, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm glad I finally got around to Holiday star. Its artwork is beautiful, and it's got the same cute but strange charm the first game did. It's very relaxing, more depressing than disturbing. The additional content goes out of its way to warn you before spoiling the first game. Play the first game before trying this. While they're not directly connected to each other, a lot of the jokes and story threads only click if you've finished it. You don't romance anyone here, but you can go on shrine dates with just about anyone who had an ending in the first game, except Azami.

A "sequel" of sorts to Hatoful Boyfriend, Holiday Star feels more like a sloppy fanmod sprinkled on top of the original game. Starting off really strong but dragging out for a very long time, the game ultimately fails to deliver on any fronts. Let us get into it.

Holiday Star is set during christmas, in a parallell universe to the original game where certain events have not happened and certain rules do not apply. You absolutely need to have played the original to understand what is going on. The game has very few choices and you largely just follow the story (there are eight choices in total, very few). The story starts very silly but later becomes quite serious, something I found problematic in the original. The game can not decide whether or not it wants to be silly or serious and that gives it a sense of lacking identity. This did not speak to me and I do not recommend it. There are some graphical issues as well, with text overflowing from textboxes at times.

Play a more polished game, avoid this one.

Much like the first instalment of Hatoful Boyfriend - This game is not to be taken at face value, and really becomes something amazing by the end of the main story.

I would highly recommend this to anybody who has played the first game (to its entirety) to play Holiday Star. With no hint of sarcasm, this is genuinely one of my favourite games in the world.

J'ai beaucoup apprécié retrouver les personnages du premier jeu. Il faut s'accrocher parce que le début peut paraître un peu tiède comparé au premier opus mais la dernière histoire est très prenante et marquante. En revanche, achetez le jeu uniquement si vous avez particulièrement aimé Hatoful Boyfriend sinon je ne suis pas certain·e que vous y trouverez votre compte.

Well who would have thought that a game that started off as a joke parody full of funny bird pictures and anime dating tropes would have gotten so damn dark in the sequel.

I'm pretty sure that the story is split into episodes in which each one can be absolutely absurd like a weapon of mass destruction that is powered by otakus/weebs. I remember there being a particularly dark story that completely changed how I viewed a certain character. But overall expect some extremely goofy ♥♥♥♥ from Holiday Star.

As for the other aspects, there are obviously new characters such as the weird pigeon twins that act as the game's comedic relief most of the time that they appear. There are a lot more CG's in the game with my personal favorite being the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tank. The game also delves further into each pigeon bf character's story a lot more in Holiday and possibly does spoil a certain route of a character in the original.

I think the one thing that ultimately convinced me was the bonus content that lets you have a mini date with the humanized version of the bird characters. I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love Anghel.

this game made me 200% more mentally ill
upon first playthrough i just saw holiday star as a fun little, if a bit disjointed, addition to the original game right? they added some silly new content of my best friends the birds, but i didn't think it was as well put together as the first. i still hold that opinion, mind you, but god. upon replays, as well as context from replays of the first game, there's so much good fleshing out of characters here. despite it just mostly being a silly little game, the emotional gutpunches in the episodes are fantastic, and i definitely did not pick up on them the first time. also, this is really specific, but there's one specific thing in holiday star that they leave up to you to figure out, and figuring it out changed my whole experience playing it.
great game. i wish more people played this one. 10/10 got me to read a (questionably translated) book of my own volition for the first time since middle school.

Basically Hatoful Boyfriend bonus lore and content, as expected. It's a nice addition, but I'd only recommend buying it if you're a real fan of the original game; otherwise it might drag on a bit.
