incredible game
Great game, now I can get my fix for hacking computers and stealing peoples' credentials without going to prison! Haha I kid.
It's pretty realistic for basic pentesting, at least what I've seen so far - I was surprised. I'm an hour into the game writing this now.
I love learning what to do. It feels just vague enough to be enjoyable - but not difficult.
I've played other hacking games, and well .. they feel too much like a game. I find this one especially exciting though because it feels like there's actually something significant at stake.
More points for being able to write your own scripts! And UNIX like OS commands & file system hierarchy.

Just started cibersecurity and this game (I think is a great point to try things). The only thing is the UI is horrible, it looks too old, but beside that is amazing. Check out HackHub the game. If this game had that UI it would be the best and most realistic hacking game. I think that is what gets people off of this game.
another very nice and addictive hacker simulator game for those that are fans of those type of games and also fascinated about cyber security in general, I trully recommend it! You'll be able to experience real UNIX-Like commands, standard (ISO) and well known tools related to offensive security that really exists in this field, the developers did a really great job to make the game something closer to reality and also including a lot of funny puzzles to solve during the game and such stuff as the possibility to develop scripts and programs inside the game using a actual programming knownledge and logics (MiniScript) wish does have a really nice Documentation API as well

The "scripting language" you need to use is a joke. The actual mechanics are not bad though.
Grey Hack is a hacking simulator that initially draws you in with an immersive desktop-style interface mimicking a semi-real UNIX computer system, but the experience quickly falls apart due to numerous frustrating issues. The visual presentation can be off-putting, and the gameplay feels clunky and confusing with no clear guidance on how to progress through jobs or missions, leaving you to rely on trial and error while staring blankly at the screen unsure of what to do next. Beyond the steep learning curve, there are immersion-breaking details that take away from the realism, such as the randomly generated names like my email server being @ixitukuqol.com and my bank being called Suxawajid, making it difficult to take the game seriously. The browser bookmarks are a mess with no indication of what leads where, and the program purchasing system is poorly designed since you can buy the same program multiple times without any warning that you already own it. To make matters worse, there are seemingly identical applications like icprox, ipsebas, cure, uagent53rpl3x, elbasic, micro, and ced that all share the exact same description for FTP exploits with no discernible difference between them, adding to the confusion. Overall, Grey Hack has an ambitious concept that fails in execution, and I would strongly recommend avoiding this game even if it is on sale.

As a certified computer enjoyer, I've loved my time with Grey Hack so far. It's not going to be a substitute for pentest labs nor official trainings, but it can introduce you to some high level concepts and give you a sandbox to enjoy being a l33t hax0r inside free of consequences.
Pros:
-Tons of complexity and intricate attacks you can pull off along with different mission types to encourage different tactics (not to mention the online sandbox of hunting other players or setting up sites/repositories). You can buy pre-made exploits for a software version or scan the library and discover your own, automate the discovery process, poison /bin commands, set up rshell servers, escalate privileges, etc.
-A decent introduction to Linux and the ideas of cybersecurity (it won't teach you proper pentesting, but it'll give you the general idea of the workflow/what many of the tools do at a high level like nmap, aircrack, metasploit, etc).
-Tons of creative freedom in tool-making, reconnaissance, social engineering, defense, etc. Also, full scripting support and the ability to configure file permissions for users, groups, and others.
-Online still has people and usually a few in chat too.
Neutral:
-You can very easily spend 80% of your game time scripting (if you so choose. This can be circumvented by using pre-made tools like Viper, 5hell, Exploiter, or Hex, then you'll only need to script if you're doing a more bespoke attack).
-The only supported scripting language is Grey Script (an API layer over Mini Script. It's like Python but with syntactic open/closing brackets and less quality of life features).
-Hardware is another game mechanic that lets you upgrade/customize your PC. I personally find it to be a chore since PC parts degrade with use and must be replaced (albeit, very infrequently) and no one likes having a slow PC. Uploads to npc PCs can also fail if the npc PC has a damaged drive and other small anomalies like that.
Cons:
-An immense learning curve with an unforgiving new-player experience (especially for online play, I strongly recommend starting in singleplayer to get comfortable).
-Small community, so learning resources aren't plentiful and many of the resources are woefully outdated and further confuse new players.
-Currently the online server can be a bit slow at times (enough to be noticeable but won't effect you other than cutting off the first letter you type if you're trying to use the terminal soon after opening).
-Hard to play without doing at least SOME scripting (even if pre-made tools help).
-Those with prior programming experience may not enjoy miniscript (I am one of them, but you get used to it). The interpreter can also be annoying in-game when it comes to building larger projects (nondescript errors, not recognizing closing brackets on large data files, etc).
Overall, if you have an interest in cyber stuff and linux, then it's a pretty easy pickup in my eyes. But if you're hoping for a fun hacking simulator without wanting to learn console commands or scripting and hope to glide on the pre-packaged exploits, then it's going to be a rough and frustrating time once you get past the easiest tier of missions.

This game is very good and very fun, but the game manual needs work. And a wiki wouldn't hurt. Lots of things follow the game's rules rather than IRL rules, which is fine, but you are sorta just expected to know what the games rules are despite never being told. This game feels like it was designed for the players that already have 50 hours in it rather than anybody new, which is a weird way to try to build a playerbase for an MMO. Either way, the game has been out for almost a decade and is still Early Access so I doubt these issues will ever be addressed.

I can only say this is the Best hacking sim i've played so far.
Yeah you kinda get thrown in there, but i got to say you don't get completeley stuck.
The Commands are slimmed down, the nmap in the game does not have nearly as many Parameters as the real one, wouldn't mind if it had, but this makes it way more beginner friendly.
To be fair, i got some experience in Unix, servers, ssh and so on since i work in that field.
There are minor inconveniences like being unable to use CTRL+C and CTRL+V in the FileExplorer or i had the problem that i didn't find the SCP command but later saw it in the /bin. So i didn't search it right in the Manual.
I would love to continue to play the game today but i got work tomorrow.
I will definitely update my Reviewer Later on. But as of now, i can say buy the Game if you aren't afraid of reading.
Step one is always information gathering.
I've enjoyed the game so far. You can clearly see it's still in development but the entire game interface is very immersive. I've run into a few minor bugs but I was able to get around them and the developers seem to keep you updated on the state of the game. I hope they flesh it out a bit more for new players. I had some experience so I knew how to navigate my way through the first few jobs but I can see how someone with little to no experience would be lost. But if you enjoy immersive, high tech games that really put you in the game mentally, give this one a try.
I went into this game with zero knowledge about Linux. The tutorial is rather short, but there is a whole Manual to read (with a search function) that helps you figure out what to do next. The game is quite interesting and I still have lots of things to learn.
Edit: Ok, this game is awesome awesome <3 It really helped me understand how Linux works and how to improve security and how amazingly cool it is to work with the OS to automate stuff for you the way you want it! The community is also very helpful.
It has really annoying bugs which I do not understand how the developers had not fix after all these years. Some of these bugs are on the internal "Code Editor", there are serious issues selecting text. Another bug happen when deleting text where the editor deletes all text from the beginning of the file up to the selected text. There is another issue when writing text where the editor does not accept input on a specific location. Also copy paste works sometimes, often after select the text the cut function does not work.
On the internal shell there are a few basic and very useful Linux operators that are missing. For example there is no pipeline operator (|) to pass the output of one script or application to another. The output redirect (>) is also missing.
Some attention to adding more functionality to the shell and fixing the Code Editor bugs will make this game more enjoyable.
Very well done, and packed with features, very intriguing and complex, it's one of the best hacking simulators I've ever played.
I am really supprised how much has been done in that game. There is a real feeling that you are a hacker. When you complete the job satisfaction is amazing. I only worry that if they started it in 2017 it will be never finished
This is everything I ever wanted in a video game. I LOVE that it's an MMO.
This is very early days in the development, so there are some missing things that would be really convenient. The terminal is not really POSIX compliant, and I'd really like some vim bindings for the text editor, but I think the game is on a really great start, and I am excited to play it more.
I like that there is this GreyScript language in there but honestly it would be really cool if you could just use an existing programming language haha

Its fun if your into coding, i like upgrades and missions but good god i dont understand anything i spent 15 hours of only looking up how to do basic things and never got past rep 1 lol - Still upgrading a computers cool i spose never did online but i just didnt wana go in there and get hacked a whole bunch and never understand it....Still i do recommend if your into programming, im in insturmentation and electrical, not this kind of coding i use lines lmao

This game is by far the most realistic hacking game I have ever played.
You can even write your own software to automate tasks and make your hacking workflow much more efficient. However, not everything can be automated through code. For example, you can’t automatically send social-engineering emails, nor can you open or close router ports via scripts. These actions always have to be performed manually through the browser or email client. I assume this limitation exists for multiplayer balance reasons.
Speaking of multiplayer, the Discord community is friendly and very helpful. There are some third-party tools available that can assist with hacking, but especially in the beginning, I would recommend relying on your own toolkit to really learn how the game works.
If you enjoy coding but don’t like using the in-game code editor, you can use the greybel-vs plugin for Visual Studio Code instead. Debugging is also possible, but limited, so you often have to rely on print statements to inspect variable values.
You can enjoy this game with or without coding, but it is not easy - it’s a continuous puzzle and problem-solving experience.
For Early Access, this game is pretty mature. Of curse, there is potentail for better quality of life - especially while clicking on UI elements and copy-pasting text.
Game gets repetitive quite fast, needs more to do. Money is too easy to get, missions are too easy to do, and multiplayer is dead.

I am just getting started, but my first impression is very good. I'm looking forward to trying the multiplayer version, and getting in to writing my own scripts. I'm still getting out of the tutorial but so far i would recommend to anyone that knows code and Linux, or is interested in learning.

C'est complexe, le jeu ne vous prend pas par la main, il faut être à l'aise un minimum sinon vous allez être très vite perdu, cependant, avec de la curiosité et de la patience ( beaucoup de patience ), vous allez comprendre et avancer petit à petit, ça reste quand même accessible, bien plus que "Bitburner" par exemple.
Une traduction française est dispo sur le workshop.
En 8h de jeu j'ai réussi à hacker une réseau wifi et à remplir une mission ( trouver les identifiants sur une machine à distance ), les bases on va dire, la je "bloque" sur une autre mission, je test des trucs mais c'est comme ça qu'on apprend, faut pas avoir peur d'expérimenter au pire vous n'avez rien à perdre !

The game is a very interesting experience. For one, most websites in multiplayer mode are hosted (and hacked) by other players, the game itself is an MMORPG of sorts, and the actual gameplay, the hacking, is VERY in-depth and requires genuine strategizing and understanding the mechanics of the game to accomplish. I feel it is more interesting than say Hacknet, another game I really love that's similar, but that's mainly because Grey Hack requires you to be so involved in the process and it isn't just "open a port using the same program every time, run the hack script, and exit and reenter to prevent a trace so you can do what you need to do". I'd be lying if I said it was an easy game, but that's where the challenge comes from, I suppose similar to Dark Souls. Thank you for listening to my rambling.
TLDR: It's fun, but you need to pay attention to the tutorials to really GET it.

Je préfère de loin "Hacknet" et "Hacker Simulator".
Edit: On peut récupérer l'argent en banque si on connait l'ancien numéro de compte; et on peut réactiver les anciens serveurs sur lesquels on a copié des fichiers (comme des exploits par exemple).
Donc je ne recommencerait plus vraiment à zéro dorénavant, d'où mon changement d'avis sur ce jeu!
Most realistic hacking game I've played to date. The community is great and the playerbase has made some fantastic tools, 5hell is my favorite so far. If you liked Hacknet and Uplink you'll love this!
40 minutes into this as a professional pentester it seems "realistic" (to the degree a fun videogame allows).
I have taken a (proportionally) similar ammount of notes as id have irl doing these actions, good stuff.

I've been playing doing trail and error so I restart every now and then and progress faster and faster as the knowledge to do task has been learnt and it's so rewarding (no you don't have to start over and over but i like to be clean) .
The game is very realistic and the closest to real world you'll get in a game. you can do stuff like this there are websites with real world challenges but this is 100% where to start if you're interested.
A lot of videos are now coming out DAILY, helping with beginners and early game.
This is just a second world with no real world punishments to your actions to hacking you can TRY so many different exploits and ways into a system.
Is this a long term game or will you complete it in hours? NO you have single player AND multiplayer you're own world OR an 100% always active world of other players doing what you are doing and to each other.
once you get through one layer of the game you'll learn and realise there's an easier way to do it OR MAKE IT. create your own programs make life easier once you learn to do it.
you are going to be learning. No nothing is stuck behind you having to get from level 1 to level 50 so you can unlock this, everything is open once you're in its just your skills and knowledge holding you back at times and do jobs for money to upgrade your computer.
ARE YOU STUCK??? no worries there is a discord with many people helping, steam community with an explanation, AND RN its a really good time as SOOO many VIDEOs are being released DAILY helping from beginner to advanced.
You wont ever have something not to do because you can be learning new things to make your life easier or a whole new part of the world of hacking.
many people have gotten the game played for a long while and left THEN came back to play again / more. why? UPDATES are constant and not small they add a lot of new world expanding gameplay, also its literally another world / your own computer. Buying this game gives you access to this new world to pop in and out of anytime you like with no punishment unless you're multiplayer as its a sandbox of the open web all computers connected to the internet and someone poking in places they shouldn't so keep up to date of versions to keep other players out and make your own computer harder to find and to hack while you're off doing jobs or hacking someone else or even when you're not on the game.

This is a great game, i LOVE the fact that it doesn't hold your hand, but at the same time the manual is there for you to study it, your imagination is the limit really, you can automate a lot of things, whatever you need, you can make your own exploits, scripts etc, all stuff i still haven't been able to do since i really just scratched the surface in my first 10 hours, learning basic things, understanding how to hack into machines, and also got busted because i logged into a machine connected to a bank. Love it.
For the dev i only have 1 constructive criticism, please fix whatever happens when you try to select text, sometimes it jumps as if you're releasing the mouse button
The tutorials and manuals are very poor, and there are times when missions can't be completed due to bugs. I couldn't complete the first mission due to a bug and had to restart the game from the beginning, But the game is very fun. However, the missions are all quite similar, so it gets boring after a while. I wish there were more diverse missions.

It's a good game but to get the most fun you will likely need some experience in UNIX based command line to make the most of it. The gameplay is fun and it's like a bunch of puzzles similar to CTFs. The difference here is that it's more rounded experience you can use social engineering to get info etc.
I got about 40 hours on this though and feel there's not too much more to do. You can do 0 day exploits as part of the multiplayer but seems there aren't that many people doing the multiplayer now. So I would probably just play Single Player since there's not much to gain from any of the multiplayer features.
It's worth the money for the time I got out of it but after you get the game and get so far it feels like there's not much more to do. So at this point I'm probably done playing this but I had a good time while I was playing it.

It's so realistic and close to how systems and networks work, and because of that it can get frustrating, but when you find where you need to be you feel like you've actualy learned something about logic, code or both, and more importantly, vulnerabilities.
u need a computer science, computer engineering, and cybersecurity penetration testing degree in order to understand the game at all, but fun once you lobotomize yourself

Client needed a password for an employer login, so I found an open port, ran an exploit, obtained root access, changed the password, and gave the new login password of “♥♥♥♥ piss” to my client.
Fantastic game, I will be playing more.
EDIT: I have added cute ASCII cats to my program that probes open ports for buffer overflows.

This game is extremely fun and is a good way to practice the most basic hacking in a safe environment.
Great game. A lot of effort went into this.
It combines real world concepts with some "gamey" elements that make it enjoyable and fun. It is somewhat serious in its approach so a background in computers/networks (not necessarily "hacking") is gonna go a long way. If you don't have that background, you might feel frustrated/bored.
Overall, I'm thoroughly enjoying it and losing track of time.

Особенно цепляет, то что можно самому разрабатывать тулзы для взлома и защиты.
Из минусов наверное можно отметить небольшое разнообразие миссий в одиночной игре, зато в сетевой можно проходить квесты созданные игроками.

Es macht unheimlich viel Spaß und man will gar nicht mehr aufhören.
Lernkurve recht steil, wer sich nicht im Thema "Internet Security" auskennt, sollte sich da vielleicht vorher etwas reinlesen :)

One of the best and ultrarealistic hacking simulation games I have played till now. So far the best and is recommended for anyone looking for some realistic hacking fun.
I really like this game, even though I have to relearn a fair bit every time I pick it back up as I'm far from being a hacker of any sort and don't know any programming languages. It's very satisfying to figure things out and makes you feel clever when you do. The fact that it's an MMO is super cool too. The discord is a good place to go for advice if you get stuck as well. Highly recommend if you've got some patience and willingness to learn, or if you already know what you're doing!

10/10 game. it's like a dark souls but with hacking... and no respawns. if you get hacked or caught you have to restart. you can however, still access your old bank account if you wrote it down and nobody else found your creds to it. pretty sure you can also hack the bank and the police.
at this point i prefer indy games over AAA-games

I started playing in 2024, and sadly haven't played it since.
MY PERSONAL opinion, from a NON-EXPERT POV:
I discovered it was a little too real for me at the time, since I didn't understand the first thing about networks.
Now I'm getting there, so I will definitely revisit this game!
It was fun the whole time I played it, I just reached a point where some network fundamentals would've helped.
I do recommend this game for anyone who's interested in coding, scripting, hacking or networks.
There's NO need to know anything beforehand, since the coding language, tools and CLI doesn't directly translate to real life(for obvious reasons), BUT there are similarities and it's based on real life tools and such.
THE most translatable "skill" you'll get from this, or maybe be familiar to is Linux, I'm NO expert.
TL;DR: GOOD GAME, I'd say it's worth its price, but if you're hesitant, definitely get it on sale.
I discovered this game by chance. Didn't know it existed but since I started leaning about Cybersecurity, it was just matter of time until it would show up somewhere... What can I said, got hooked from the very beginning. I'm a Software Engine, and the fact that I can write my own scripts to hack is just a lot of fun. This game is simply a must for anyone who wants to learn while playing. Also the hacking techniques, even though they are a simplified, the experience is very close to reality. It also teaches you about systems and network security. Again, it's oversimplified, but this is what makes it fun to play... This game is highly recommend from someone who's been in Software development for the last 20 years, and for last year in Cybersecurity.
I m a real life pentester . it's the most realistic game i've ever seen about hacking ! it's really educating that i recommend this game to my students. most importantly it's fun ! and being multiplayer at the same time sounds like miracle ... keep up the good work please .
