I've spent 8 hours on this game and it's a love letter to immersive sims of old. It is not complete yet, but I would highly recommend playing it. It's so well made at this stage that I thought it was pretty much done (it feels like it is about 1/4 done, but wow the length and completeness fooled me).
The only issue I can think of is that it's been in development since 2022, so it will take some time for it to be finished I'm afraid.

Локация после Андерпорта - полный бред. Туннели полностью забитые монстрами + околонулевой лут, так еще и на каждого клювастого надо потратить кучу патрон. В близи их не одолеть, как и не спрятаться в тени. В общем всё было до этого момента более менее нормально. Зачем было делать такую вырвиглазную и тёмную локацию - не понятно...
I really don't like this game, I really don't. The melee system is clunky and boring as you just keep blocking or you can just keep hitting the enemy because they get stunlocked for some reason. The research system is weird and annoying as having to lug stuff around back to the lighthouse is super time intensive and annoying with certain creature body parts being big. The layout of the City is super confusing. You can get lost for alot of time not knowing where to head unless you're willing to watch a youtube video. The guns are the only somewhat fun part of this game but because of how ammo is restricted you cannot always use them. This game has a heavy "trial and error" approach where you can die several times before figuring the correct way to approach a certain group of enemies which is unfun and pretty frustrating. This was saddening because the visual style of this game is really nice and the worldbuilding is also nice. The gameplay elements of this game are just not designed well and do not fit together to form a cohesive gameplay experience unless you like dying and getting lost. It is sad to see because I had alot of hope with this game being made by newblood. the core systems need to be changed for me to find this game fun. In the end this game was really unfulfilling for me and looking back at it, it wasn't worth my time or money.
It's okay. Definitely overrated.
Without spoiling anything, I greatly enjoy the variety of ways you can choose to handle certain scenarios throughout the areas the game currently has on offer. One of my favorite segments offers a way to completely sneak by the threat within, or face it head on with any number of strategies using even only just the tools you can find solely within the area the encounter takes place in.
That's all not to mention the atmosphere and story that I've been absolutely adoring, and makes me want to learn more about the downfall of the city the game takes place in as I continue to uncover worse and worse horrors throughout the journey.
In simpler words - Its glooming time.

This game was a lurid masterpiece. If I'd describe it in a few words, it would be a Dark Horror Retro Stealth Shooter. Some of its amazing features include, but are not limited to, a resident-evil style inventory system, suspenseful horror buildups, tons of cool guns and weapons, hand-crafted level designs with tons of cleverly hidden (and very rarely inaccessible :P) loot, a brutal and dark art/design scheme that sometimes features grotesque things (looking at you Sootworks entrance "bodypiles" in the market area D:). Despite it having a retro feel/look, it still has great graphics and BUTTERY SMOOTH performance. I was somewhat disappointed when I learned that the game was nowhere near finished yet, but the dev team is tiny and they are going for the quality over quantity approach (despite the game feeling pretty large). They should take as much time as they want to finish this game because it is one of my favorites of all time now. All the weapons feel great and all have their place and role within the game. The shotgun is especially useful.

This game is so good I was waiting for the catch. There sorta is one, which is unfortunate but there seems to be steady progress! In any case, it's the best game out of this decade I've played to date, which is bold, but it's just that damn good. Addicting, intense, incredible atmosphere and graphics. I'll check every day for the rest of my life for updates If I have to.

Super good blend of survival horror and im sim. It's like how in Thief there were those supernatural zombie levels, but they decided to combine it with the normal sneaking levels that also flows continuously level like in classic Resident Evil. I guess this also comes from Souls game influence where you clear out levels and unlock shortcuts along the way which is always satisfying, but it has limited resources like a true survival horror. This and Fallen Aces are my favorite indie im sims I've played so far!
Fantastic spiritual successor to Thief series (the ones by Looking Glass, not the crappy remake), one of my most nostalgic games from my youth. Does a great job of staying true to its clear inspiration, while also changing up the formula quite a bit and refining the somewhat dated aspects of the original Thief games. I love the dark gothic/steam punk aesthetic of the game and the quasi-open world level design and the voice acting and the VFX...just all of it is a great package. I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing what this game is like with its full release, because each update has been killing it consistently in delivering quality after quality addition to the base game.
That being said, my only major criticism of the game is the research update. I really dig the overall concept for it, but its incredibly tediously designed with regards to hauling body parts back for actual researching. It's not challenging, its just annoying. It would be much better if there could be a purchasable meatsack or something that would only take up like 4 slots in your inventory case where you could store all the body parts you find out in the world from a corpse. That and the actual serums you craft last WAY too little time for me to really consider it to be all that worthwhile with the sheer amount of effort that goes into actually creating them. They should easily last like 4 or 5 times longer, otherwise I don't see myself bothering in continuing to craft them at all.

Holy moly this game is is so absolute gas even for it being so early in development still. This game is easily worth whatever you get it for.
Game so good I last played it in 2024 and still think it's one of the best games on Steam.

Good game. Some sections were confusing and I needed to know where to go, but I think that is due to my sense of direction (there was a note I forgot about...). Every single encounter can be approached with various paths in mind. Enemy reveals are done with great buildup. The enemy AI can be dumb sometimes, but being able to predict it is part of the fun. Low skill floor, ridiculously high skill ceiling for anything. Parkour, avoiding enemy detection, dodging, there are plenty of interesting things to get good at. The game also rewards curiosity and testing new things (even some rewards off the beaten path, or shortcuts if you keep your eyes peeled).
[spoiler]Cutting up bodies and researching them feels thematic and interesting, my only complaint is the difficulty. A body bag item would help a lot, or a way to carry corpses through certain loading zones. Took like 10 minutes to fully research the Goatmen, when it could've taken more like 5 if I could get the corpse back and not little bits and pieces. I had already cleared out all the enemies, so all I had to do was walk from point A to point B, but I had to walk from point B to A, then back to B, then A again, then B (point B is the lighthouse, point A is the slaughtered goat). This could've been faster if I had some sort of body bag that took up most of the inventory, however allowed you to carry bodies through loading zones (maybe even with a slight speed penalty to discourage fighting while carrying a body). This is more of a personal issue though, and the rest of the system feels very rewarding. I absolutely love the passive buffs, and the syringes are an interesting yet rare resource that requires careful planning.[/spoiler]
[spoiler]Underport is horrific though. In a good way. I know I did not thoroughly explore it, but I think I will never do a thorough exploration there[/spoiler].

It's an interesting one for sure. Definitely feels a little bit rougher around the edges than some other New Blood titles, with enemy AI being a bit janky and movement often being clunky, not to mention that there's honestly... not a *ton* there after this long. That being said, the core concept still works well and it comes together to form an experience that is more than the sum of it's parts. Also, the shotgun is the best feeling one I've used in a game in a long time.
Like Thief and Dishonored and Resident Evil 4 made a baby, so pretty tuff.
absolutely goated game, never expected for the stealth mechanics to be this fun.
The first 4 locations were cool, and then I suffocated in the city. Then in the catacombs.. Then I turned on the developer's console and quickly ran to the elevator (the end of the demo)
Overall, it's good, but a small inventory, a meager arsenal and such a variety gradually kills the desire to play.

Absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ masterpiece. Aesthetically pleasing. The sound design is amazing . The level designs and layouts are so well done, everything interconnects so smoothly. Voiceacting is impressive for a very small indie dev team, with no access to professional voiceactors. My only complaint is, that more people should know about this game. Truly a hidden gem.

Best Game to compare it with would be the old Thief Games (Dark Project).
Game does not take you by the hand, you are thrown into the world and learn as you go.
Minimal Hud, Maps need to be found, just a small tutorial at the start.
Really solid Game overall.
Level Design, Immersion and Consequences of your Actions is what stood out to me.
My biggest gripes are Climbing Controls (theyre a mess and feel out of place/outdated) and AI being a little imbalanced at times.
Theres times where you make a move and everyone knows where you are, and then theres times where enemies will look for you while being next to them.
If you fancy stealth games that reward patience and love having different approaches/routes to a goal, you're in for a good time.

I love this game a lot and have played through a few times. The only thing I wish could be done is when the game updates that I don't have to complete it again and again just to get to new and released content. I can't open a past save just because it doesn't match the current update; hence I have to start over each time from the beginning of the game. If the save could somehow be converted in the process, then I would consider recommending this game to anyone. I don't have this problem in any other title I own.

Pretty good new blood game wouldnt recommend if you dont like stealth cuz its a big part of this game But it is a pretty good game has some cool mechanics that other new blood games dont my only complaint is you have to walk 9 Lightyears to find a save point but that could be considered a skill issue

+ The fact you can mantle most things and gain a height advantage is really nice.
+ Really like the blunt flare rounds that can help use switches at a distance. (I went to the slaughtered goat bar on my 2nd playthrough) And really does help with some skips.

Это вероятно тот самый иммерсив сим, которого желают те самые фанаты в интернетах и в том числе на дтф. Я люблю этот жанр, но не испытываю писающегося восторга. Игра на момент написания находится в раннем доступе, но в ней уже доступно много локаций (судя по отзывам сильно больше, чем было у большинства игроков у самых популярных отзывов). Основная суть в том, что к большинству загадок и целей можно подойти с разной стороны и решить множеством способов, если мне память не изменяет, в ачивках есть даже пацифистские в стиле не убить никого или убивать только огнем. Вся игра подается через записки, которые естественно не имеют перевода на русский, а написаны не очень интересно, поэтому в какой-то момент я перестал их читать и видимо из-за этого потерял те крохи сюжета, что там были и хоть какую-то мотивацию продолжить проходить эту предрелизную версию до её концовки, т.к. в локации замка по сюжету меня взяли и перекинули в самую первую локацию и я абсолютно не возжелал вновь проходить старые локации и дропнул игру. Она безусловно хороша и необычна, как и любая игра от New Blood (мой новый фаворит среди разработчиков, которые любят рисковать и делают это успешно), поэтому я советую ознакомиться каждому с ней, и я уверен, среди них найдутся даже те, кто влюбятся в неё по уши.

Positive:
-Enjoying the great atmosphere.
-The Easter eggs for Thief are fun.
-Shotgun has good sound and feedback, love the smoke coming out of the front.
-The movement is good, and I have been enjoying the option for verticality.
-The art style complements the overall game and story.
-No game-breaking bugs thus far.
-Enjoying the humor and just silly enough not take itself too seriously. Humor and horror are a great pairing.
Change:
-Got stuck in a side table in one of the manors. It was next to a door, and, though a series of unfortunate events/peak timing, the door opened as the hutch closed, pushing me inside. Because the door blocked the hutch, I needed to reload my save. Not gonna lie, this was 100% player error on my part, so it got a good laugh out of me.
-More voice actors would be great. Love the homage to Benny and his buddy, and expanding on the good work already there would bring it up to a new level.
-I found the revolver to be not as useful as the other weapons. Might need some TLC to make it worth taking up space in the inventory.
-I would prefer for the enemies to be alert for a little longer (might be a result of my difficulty level (regular)).
-It might be cool if enemies, when alerted, look under tables and behind doors.
-Have a special slot for puzzle critical items (I found myself backtracking and dropping things that I needed to go back for. Started to feel like a fetch quest, and we all know how the gaming community feels about fetch quests)
-Be nice to have some collectables. Maybe a head display in the basement and hats on the main floor? or, hear me out, combine the two so we can swap hats & heads on a display?
-Have the shop re-stock items that the player uses more often so that we are more inclined to purchase things? Maybe have it on a timer so that players don't spam the store.
-Taking things out of the case tended to have my character fling stuff across the room in a rage. which, given the circumstance, seems accurate, but it can be a drag when I have to clean up after him like a single mom taking care of a toddler after a tantrum.
-Please let me bash enemy heads in with a brick. It's ok if I don’t get body parts if I use it.
Those are my thoughts for now. I do recommend giving this game a try, especially if you are a fan of the Thief series.

i love the style, weapons, characters, though the gameplay is a bit annoying with its stealth mechanics as sometimes i'd get spotted through the crack of a doorway, or i'd lure someone in and either have them run to my exact hiding spot or when i attempt to backstab they turn around immediately with no warning, but compared to everything else its worth it
Gloomwood promotes itself as an immersive sim. To me that means being creative in your playthrough. I want to think “is that possible?” and then be happy when it is. But this game simply doesn’t deliver on that front.
Don’t get me wrong. I do believe this game is worth playing for other reasons. It’s fun for one; The level design has plenty of little mini stories and puzzles in it. There’s generally enough variety in enemy types to keep things interesting. The atmosphere is fantastic!
These are what kept me going throughout my playthrough. I want to know more about where I am and what’s going on in this place. I want to explore different paths around the same places and get all the little secrets. I wanted to sneak around and backstab a bunch of bad guys. And I did! Way too much so!
That is where things actually started falling a little flat for me. Despite how damn good the vibes are, the gameplay itself doesn’t really hold up right now. To me it generally felt like I had 3 options. A: I sneak around, distract and backstab everyone. B: I blast down everyone with whichever gun I have at my disposal. Or C: A mix of both. Which really just means I failed to sneak and stab, then shotgun blast the guy I agro’d and hide again in order to continue sneaking. AND THAT’S IT! That’s the game!
I want more options. I want to be able to knock enemies unconscious! (imagine a full pacifist run). I want more and smaller gadgets to place in their paths and kill them with it. I want to chuck a pickaxe at someone and actually have it do damage and stick in them as they chase me. Imagine combining the two things I just mentioned and how I could use that. That’s the kind of gameplay I want in an immersive sim like this.
There were moments in this game where I genuinely thought I was being led to do something cool and creative that ultimately led nowhere. Case in point: (minor spoiler) In Hightown there’s a spot where you’re directly above someone on a wooden platform with some nice looking bricks next to you. Well, 1+1=2 right? Throw a brick on his head!.. WRONG! It doesn’t kill them and a knockout system doesn’t exist. Instead, it does minor damage and agro’s 2 of them nearby! Come on man!
What limited options I do get that aren’t “shoot everything” felt even further limited by the somewhat lacking loot in the latter half of the game so far. What mostly irked me is that the store only sells a select few item types. The thing I wanted to use at some point, a baton bolt for the flare pistol, I could not use. I ran out completely and there was no option to purchase them. Hell I literally spent an hour backtracking across the entire game(!) to try and find some to no avail.
I could go on and on about minor inconveniences and all. But you get the idea. This isn’t as much of an immersive sim as it is a survival horror game.
I will say it once more though! Despite my personal feelings about the imsim part, it’s a fun game! You’re guaranteed to get dragged along by the vibes thanks to the music, sound and level design. Some moments are really set up perfectly to tense you up good. I was so scared at the start of the Hive level! Play this game for that reason if anything.
Also this doesn’t fit anywhere in my review but the first person animations are really good. I love the little flick you give the Flashbomb when you first get it :P
One of the best immersive sims to date. One of my favorite games already.
Hands down my favorite Stealth game, because (at least the way I played) you aren't exactly a brawler. You can prepare a few aces up your sleeve, facilitating your escape should things go south, while still encouraging stealth, even if you decide to prey on your enemies.
I love the look of the game. I couldn't find a single thing that didn't fit the style. Many other games also use older graphics, but then you find a few things looking waaay better than the rest (most notably skyboxes), which immensely hinders immersion. I'm happy to report this to not be the case in Gloomwood! The style and visual quality stay consistent and are complemented by good lighting (especially [spoiler]your lantern, the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ flickering of the flame really adds to the horror of certain sections[/spoiler]), and most places have enough objects/details scattered/placed around to support the intended atmosphere without feeling cluttered.
The game (as of the Hightown Update) does not have auto-saves, only quick-saves (the difference of which I learned the hard way early on) or normal, "location-locked" saves. Personally I like this, and I do not use quick-saves, leading to a permadeath-direction, which in turn makes the risks riskier and encounters more exhilarating, provided you don't die all the time. Unfortunately, however, I find the difficulty (on Full-Moon, basically Hard, but not Nightmare) to be too inconsistent, since your guns can be used very offensively. There are areas where this is necessary, but there are also areas where this is overpowered (but optional, so take it with a grain of salt). Correct me if I'm wrong, but letting your enemies live does not yet provide any benefits. Once you killed everyone, the area obviously becomes a walk in the park. Now, this DOES NOT make the game less fun, it's rather some currently untapped potential.
Of course, this isn't all there is to be said, but Gloomwood is a blast to play, and it will likely only get better as time goes on. If you don't mind having to wait half a year for a new area you should try the game, and if you do mind, at least put it on your wishlist.
If I convinced you to play, you're next in line. Convince someone else.
Don't really wanna write a review for games still in-development, but I feel the need to commend the devs on their efforts here.
If you're like me, and pretty pessimistic about the state of modern Immersive Sims; being way too handholding and dumbed down, almost feeling like they're playing themselves? Then this is the remedy.
Gloomwood gets pretty much everything right that I want from a game like this. It has very little handholding, and for the most part, just throws you into the world, letting you make your way through it on your own. Which goes hand in hand with the great level design. The very first area, The Fishery, is already a better map than most of what you'll find in big budget titles. The level design becomes a bit basic after that but is still above average.
Of course the AI isn't as complex as in those big budget titles, but Gloomwood shows that it doesn't need to be, when you get the fundamentals right. They notice bodies, they notice open doors and moved objects, they even break down locked doors to get to you. Its everything you need really.
There are some issues though, mainly said enemy AI. Line of sight and especially sound detection are incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes they spot you from miles away, and other times you can walk right under the noses.
Sound is worse. While they seem incredibly attentive to your stealthy footsteps, you can literally blast some enemies with the shotgun in open combat, while a guy guarding a door just around the corner 10ft away hears absolutely nothing and doesn't move.
Speaking of the shotgun: ammo is also in surpring quantites for a "survival horror" game and Immersive Sim. Pair that with the generally low difficulty of enemies and a lot of the effort you can go through in this game to avoid open combat, seems pointless and purely a choice that doesn't really have benefits.
Anyway, if they keep on track here and also iron out the inconsistencies, then Gloomwood could be very well an instant classic for genre fans. I'm not sure I'd recommend getting it now, unless you're a genre fan and simply wanna support the development.

Maybe I’m burned out on stealth games, maybe I’ve gotten used to stealth games with better AI, but I just can’t be bothered to figure out all the small quirks of this game’s sound detection, vision cones, and aggro ranges. I got unpleasantly surprised by the AI behavior a few too many times to continue. At least for now

Atmosferi, gizliliği, gerilimi ve harita tasarımı ile Gloomwood çok iyi bir oyun olmuş. Oyunda bir bölgede iken düz gitme durumu yok istediğiniz yerden ve şekilde gitmeniz gereken yere gidebiliyorsunuz. isterseniz ateş ederek gidin, isterseniz gölgelerden gizlenerek, isterseniz lağımlardan ve isterseniz arka kapıdan. Oyun bu serbestlik yönü, çevreyi araştırmak ve değerli eşyaları aramak buna ek olarak gerici atmosferi ile gayet eğlenceli bir oynanış sunuyor. Daha önceden bu oyunu oynamıştım ama emeğin karşılığını vermek ve tam sürüm çıkana kadar destek olmak amacı ile oyunu satın aldım. Kesinlikle tavsiye ediyorum pişman olmayacaksınız (Erken erişim oyunu olmasına rağmen oynanış süresi gayet uzun).
顶级的关卡设计和环境音效，绝对值得一玩。由于制作组没有使用虚幻5拼好游戏，所以虽然优化没问题但是画面稍显简陋，毕竟我们潜行游戏玩家爆不出多少金币。希望能有官方中文，啃生肉信件还是太累了。
Went in expecting Thief and got something similar yet different.
Good level design with lots of different ways to approach. Sometimes a tad easy but I haven't tried higher difficulty to see if sounds and surfaces are more important.
очень классная игра. Впервые играл в такой жанр, много секретов много вариантов прохождения локаций. Одно жалко что не израсходовал свои запасы из маяка( у меня там дроби 40-50 штук валяется). Короче жду продолжения новых персонажей, врагов и может быть боссов.

In a market saturated with some absolute slop, Gloomwood is a breath of fresh air.
The games visual style is absolutely gorgeous, whislt I usually consider low poly, PS1 esque graphics to be needless they fit perfectly here. The enemy design is absolutely perfect, all of them feeling threatening in their own way, while being different enough to each-other that every section feels almost like an entirely new story to wrap yourself in. On-top of all of this the level design is absolutely phenomenal, you feel rewarded for exploration yet not pampered.
The gameplay is similar only to thief from games I've played, a focus on stealth, yet you are not discouraged from choosing combat, being able to either blast a mans head off or stick a blade into his spine makes you carefully consider each combat encounter.
The worldbuilding is absolutely incredible, notes you find dotted around the map add so much to the lore in their own ways, they feel truly human. each area has an astounding and overwhelming theme which often times immerses me in an incredible way.
The sound design is top-notch, each enemy sounds as good as they look, Goat-men are intimidating, large and impossible to miss due to their loud yet not intrusive breathing. Crow-men slink in the shadows quietly. Hunstmen are weak on their own but hearing multiple of them makes you reconsider your approach. Bat-Barbers are quiet, waiting for the jump on you as you pass by, and when you do, you'll know.
My sole complaint for Gloomwood is its absolutely glacial development speed, of course its not a triple A studio so i dont expect the game to be finished a month after announcement but the length that you have to wait for major updates to be completed is simply frustrating.

Abysmally awful stealth mechanics the devs should be embarased. Game expects you to crouch walk everywhere when no enemies are visible or audible because they themselves can actually hear you just fine walking around a building several walls away from you. We are by the coast with waves splashing, guards wandering and walking about, but my footsteps from a wall between us away sends them running? My personal footsteps are that clockable to them? Doesn't matter what you have going for positives when the core game sucks.. like dude we are in the 2020s you seriously are too lazy to copy paste stealth ai code into your stealth game?
This game is great for what it currently is, but it's not coming out of EA before 2030.
I really like the game but i would really love if it have more risk, tension, consequence and guards to be more aware of whats happening, like more unforgiving to what you do. You get a lot of tools and opportunities to breaks the game, like fire is very powerful it can wipe multiple foes in seconds cuz they run into eachother, or they just dumb a lot of times. I like that locations of this game, they kept me interested. For now if you want to get more challenge just do challenge runs, its like this with many games to be honest.
This is sooooo good, it scratches that immersive sim itch just the right way. Very well thought out mapdesign and a lot of attention to detail make this a remarkable experience. I cant wait for more.

Holy ****, I really needed this.
Bioshock is one of my favorite games ever, and this harkens back to both that artstyle and also that slow methodical gameplay that i loved. Its fun, horrifying at times, and has tons of secrets to discover. You have to make choices on what to bring with you because inventory space is limited, you have to be sparing with your ammo consumption, you have to choose which fights to take and which to avoid, everything about this game screams that the developer cares and loves the game. I'm honestly super surprised people aren't talking more about this game, for an early access it has so much to offer and im looking forward to the next update. For now i will have to settle on doing my "Only Canesword run" and see how it goes!
TLDR: Highly recommended and it gets a big stamp of approval from me!
Absolutely loved it even if I started playing like rambo the second I got a gun (I was on the easiest difficulty). Theres still some ways to go as for lore depth but that will probably come once the game is actually finished I'm amazed EVERYTHING is voice acted. The environments are extremely well done my one gripe is maybe a fast travel portal inside the underport but otherwise the game is amazing.
I bought it at full price while bored at 3am and it went on sale the next day, I'm not even mad the game is that good and Im glad I bought it to support its continued development.
10/10 hopefully it wins some awards when its finished

Fantastic stealth game!
As an early adopter of this game and after playing through many updates with new zones each time i can say it really scratches an itch of a stealth game with inventory management style game. Each zone is unique and has depth with lots of routes and layers built on top of each other. The story is still developing and feels like it does still have a way to go but coming back every few updates has been fun as the gameplay has been refined. Its like a modern day thief game but with some guns and utility tossed in for good measure. I love the utility gun that can put out fire and shoot out light bulbs. Great immersion especially in the sewer sections and just worth your money. I like how they put in the research update that puts a twist to the gameplay loop that allows you to make potions that can turn you into different beasts and enemies of the game. If the developer reads this, my only gripe with the system (from a hoarder perspective cuz i horde a LOT in these games) is that its hard to take a huge torso to bring back to the research station among other body parts because i have to drop all my gear just in order to take body parts. Maybe if there was a separate bag that could carry some parts would help me utilize the system more than i have in my playthroughs. But even if not, it doesn't hinder the experience the game already provides.
Keep up the good work and support these hard working devs! Cant wait to play the full product one day!

This is basically just a live service game given the dog's age this thing has been in early-access. And for what? They're pushing out an update for a new shop in the market! Wow! That's almost a quarter of the levels in Thief 1 Golden! Why'd they have to do this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with Thief, man? People have been salivating for something that tastes similar to Thief for years, (Thief 3 was 2004) and they decide to release their spiritual successor piecemeal over the span of years.
And another thing, the Bloodborne aesthetic was already played out in 2020 when the game was announced. Bloodborne was 11 years ago people. Let's do better than big guys with antlers, okay?
Go play the Thief 1 overhaul mod, The Black Parade instead.
I'll change this review in 8 years when the game is fully out and I venture to touch it again.
All Constables Are Bastards
so much more than what i thought it would be. genuinely enjoy this game. for early access it has an immense amount of content. i've ran into a few bugs, for instance a shortcut i was using was completely removed mid playthrough, and reworked somehow but i worked around it. if they could add an option to change difficulty mid game that'd be great, i wanted to up my difficulty without starting over my playthrough.
It's an amazing game. The only downside is that the game is far from finished but there is a substanstial amount of content here already (at least 20+ hours on first playthrough). The stealth gameplay is some of the best I have seen and I adore the setting, world building, and its art direction. Gloomwood is horrifically gorgeous and just fun to play. As a full finished experience this will probably be one of the most dynamic and beautiful games I've ever played. My reccomendation would be to play the game once in early access and then revisit it once its done. The way the game is updated in chunks, while enjoyable for someone heavily immersed in it, can make revisiting the game every 6 month for 3ish hours of new content a bit tantalizing. Its more than worth the price for the state it is in now and will be a steal when its fully released. I give it 10 big Glooms.

A spectacular and atmospheric blend of horror survival, puzzle solving, stealth, and high-stakes shootouts. Well crafted maps, lore a plenty, and an intriguing yet action packed gameplay loop that even involves research with cadavers at some point.
I've heard it likened to Thief, leans a bit more towards Dishonored gameplay wise Imo, but it's a wonderful game regardless.
The detail is there in every aspect of gameplay and it shows. I've been hooked since I clicked "Play" and I'm interested to see how much more the devs have planned for this already beautiful title. Definitely worth the price tag.
Greatest Game ever. It plays slow and can be frustrating at times (i played only blood moon dont know other difficulties) but its so fun when it works. There are so many different strategies and ways to beat the different areas its insane. Would def buy even at full price

great immersive sim, its very easy to get lost in the world of gloomwood and its a genuinely enchanting game to engage with. its fun, and it feels very rewarding to make progression. no automated stealth takedowns either- every step forward you make is all on you, and i love that

The First True Thief Successor
The Thief series is my favorite of all time. Nothing has come close in decades.
Until Gloomwood.
This is the first game that truly captures what made Thief 1 and 2 special. Not just the aesthetics, but the design philosophy. It is obvious this was made by people who deeply understand those games.
The atmosphere is sinister and oppressive. The game drops you into a hostile world and tells you nothing. You have to observe, experiment, and figure out where you are and how to survive. That mystery creates real tension.
The level design is excellent. Multiple paths. Multiple solutions. You set your own difficulty through playstyle. Go loud and deal with the consequences, or move through the shadows and feel genuinely clever.
The weapons and tools are seamlessly integrated into the stealth systems. They are not gimmicks. This is not Thief with weapons. It stands on its own while honoring its inspiration.
I also played Dishonored. While some compare this to Deus Ex or Dishonored, I honestly do not see many similarities beyond having equipment at your disposal. The feeling is completely different. Gloomwood captures something older and more deliberate.
The retro aesthetic feels intentional and faithful to the immersive sim roots. The environments and animations are crafted with care.
Even in Early Access, what is here is polished.
Starting a new run feels like chasing the dragon. I genuinely wish I could experience it for the first time again.
If Thief meant something to you, Gloomwood will too.
I would happily pay much more just to see it finished sooner.
its not finished so it feels weird to say its my favorite game i have ever played, but i cant stop even after finishing the latest campaign area. the research update adds so much replayability and even after beating it, when you go back to some places you already got past a long time ago there's a whole new altercation going on. the lore is intriguing, especially because its not really explained and the game isn't done so you have to use your imagination and the many notes in your journal you get along the way. the stealth is my favorite from any stealth game i've played (thief 1-2, dishonored 1, filcher, intravenous 1-2, and assassins creed if you count it as stealth though i wouldn't) although this game is 60% stealth 30% rampage 10% exploration. i've heard people say they didn't like how janky the enemies are, and the fishery area seemed a little hard for my friends when they began it but that's a skill issue and the ai feels amazing. the difficulty is perfect. the models, textures, and character design are beautiful and the atmosphere is #1. one of my favorite aspects is the mantle system, parkour is one of my favorite genres as well as stealth and i love when they combine in some way. and this is a weird detail to love but the doctor has a clean fit on at all times. i love looking at my hands and seeing my well tailored suit, gloves, ring, and whatever beautiful weapon i have in my hands to accompany them. the level design is insane and it blew my mind when i finished an area, lowered a rope, and it connected to an area from before. i don't usually play lots of horror but the scariest areas in this game were probably my favorite. i also really love getting rich, exploding heads, discovering species and creating serums in a dark lab straight out of Frankenstein, and decorating my room in the emerald eye with rare treasures and alien artifacts. i could keep going on but i've already glazed as much as possible, 1000/10 thank you dillon rogers
The best way to describe this game is a first person survival horror immersive sim. Bear with me, I know that seems like a lot but really that's exactly what it is. It's more than an FPS and more than a survival horror, considering how much content is available for $20 I think it's fantastic. Let me say though, this game DOES NOT hold your hand and sometimes that can be challenging but I have to say I actually like it in this game. There's so many different routes you can try, so many hidey holes to sneak through, and so many ways to do EVERYTHING. If you want to prioritize stealth, or when something seems too obvious or too difficult to approach head on, there is usually a different way around it you just haven't found yet and I LOVE that! Do you keep dying in one spot? Go a different route and find another way around or find at least an EASIER route to your destination and the Hightown update is FANTASTIC! This was 100% worth the money and I highly recommend this to anyone who likes problem solving. The dopamine rush I got when I made progress cannot be described, I'll finish hyping up this game but honestly this game will suck you in the moment you get into it.

dark, gloomy, gothic, DRIPPING with atmosphere and mood, simple but tight stealth mechanics, neat tools, horrific monster design, clunky but functional sword combat and gunplay, and, as of the time of writing, a variety of venues and areas all thematically appropriate to a victorian nightmare hellscape. definitely snag this one on sale if you can (or whenever, its really worth what they ask for it tbh) and keep an eye on its future updates.

Stealth Action, Survival Horror, and puzzles, puzzles, puzzles. A great mix of all 3 in a low-poly, semi-open world survival game where you stab, shoot, and steroid abuse your way through London.

This game is phenomenal with a lot to love, but it has some rough edges that just give me the ick. Really great when you sink your teeth into it, but I can't even disagree with some of the negative reviews when the game's three years into EA and still has some amateur fumbles inside. I'd like to write about those fumbles real quick before I can get to praising the game proper, because the devs really need to fix these if they want this to be the masterpiece it deserves to be:

[*]Watchmen AI is [i]unnatural[/i] and difficult to predict in the bad way. Their "vision indicators" are a complete joke and a lie, with stealthing around them feeling like a game of pretend where they secretly always know where you are. One glimpse is all that's necessary for the entire region to know your exact location - It's incredibly limiting and frustrating.
[*]Basic movement like climbing is inconsistent with no indicator of how or why it works, climbing a rope is muddled by baffling controls where your climbing direction when holding up/down buttons can [i]reverse[/i] depending on the direction you're looking. Why couldn't we have simple climb up/down buttons?
[*]Melee combat is clunky and incapable of handling more than one enemy, probably by design, but this makes stealth be the [i]only[/i] option to tackle groups of enemies and limits options for no reason. Even when it's a valid option, I feel miserable beating the enemy with my stick while he lazily snaps between his sprinting and attack animations.
[*]Those three points kind of ruin the "immersive" part of the sim for me, so I dearly hope the devs take the feedback to heart and make some much needed changes.

If all of that sounds really harsh, especially for a game I just called a [b]masterpiece[/b], it's because the idea that basic issues like that are present in this game so far into EA kind of frustrates me, I love the potential this game has, especially with how much love and care the developers put into it, but just because the game does some stuff really great doesn't mean those issues should be disregarded.
That all being said... Let me actually talk about the great stuff.
Gloomwood is a game about patience, strategy, and knowing your place within its world and how you can affect the things immediately surrounding you.
From the very beginning, you're tossed into a world where threats are already present and you have to be sneaky and clever to survive. Each enemy is a mini-challenge to figure out the cleanest way to rid of them, and progressing through the starting area feels like the beginning of a covert, hostile takeover as you learn your surroundings, unlock shortcuts to previous areas and save points, and make your claim over this small part of the world. It feels incredibly rewarding.
The scope of each area gets grander and grander as you continue through the story, and the situations you find yourself in get more interesting too. Each location makes sense in the context of the world, and you often leave them feeling like you've conqured the area. Each of them are distinct with some defining feature to set them apart, too. You find more options to sneak around and fight enemies in the form of different tools later on, but you're often forced to use the environment to your advantage. And you'll be finding tons of keys that unlock new areas when backtracking - You'll be carrying a lot of mental load thinking about the ways your new tools will help you reach areas you couldn't before.
Now, this the best thing about this game: There are always, and I mean [i]always[/i] multiple solutions to a problem in this game, I am genuinely not confident enough to come up with a situation where there isn't. I have avoided encounters, instakilled bosses, and skipped entire areas in Gloomwood through sheer cleverness alone, and it's a shocking moment of discovery and an intrinsically rewarding experience every single time. The way this game makes you feel connected to its world through natural exploration, connections, and solutions that surprise you at first but make [i]perfect sense[/i] when you think about it is really special.
I struggled really hard with a boss fight early on in the game, my choices were to either swipe a key off it's back and leave undetected, or fight it to the death. I was stuck trying both options for an hour when I discovered a secret third - Lure it underneath an elevator and crush it. This solution didn't come easily and still required soeme trial & error, but it worked and I felt damn good. It's this feeling that I play Gloomwood for.

[*]I also found an area in that boss fight that gave me access to an explosive, a valve to open a gate that'll help me unravel a loose thread from a previous area, and a peek into [i]another[/i] room that I still don't know how to get to.
[*]Once I spotted a completely random, out of place lever in a building that did nothing. It confused me until I spotted a strange barred staircase with four lights, one of them not like the others. I immediately drew the obvious connection and went hunting for three more switches to open this gate into a secret area with a valuable item. I almost had no idea this existed.
[*]I still don't really know how, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I swam through a pipe and ended up in the scariest area of the entire game and I didn't even realize it was part of the main progression. I felt like I went completely out of bounds and started seeing stuff I wasn't supposed to, but then I realized after some exploration that I actually got [i]past[/i] the section that I was trying to reach. So my unrelated exploration of a random pipe threw me to the next major part of the game. Incredible.

So, despite my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ earlier, it's needless to say that this is a great game still worth playing. If you love exploring a world, treating the map like a puzzle that you have to piece together yourself, then you will love this game. If you love feeling rewarded for cleverly exercising your problem-solving skills then you will also love this game. I might love this game.
