The good parts:
I really like how each map has its own unique idea and design—it keeps the game feeling fresh. It did take me a while to understand everything at first, but once I got the hang of it, I actually enjoyed the experience.
The bad parts:
The tutorial doesn’t help at all. It’s just long paragraphs, and honestly, who has time to read all that?
Also, you can’t really play solo—the maps are way too big for one person, so you definitely need a team or at least a duo.
There are only three maps, which feels very limited. I wish there were more.
And there’s no auto-run feature, which is frustrating. My finger literally hurts from holding the run button because the maps are so big.
The right mix of goofy and horror, a blast with friends, but defenitly has the ability to stand on its own as a single player game. I esspecially like the bloodfang hunt, since it was 99% beating people to death.
The game feels new, like a freshly cracked egg, and I am beyond exicited to see where this game goes into the future, when it gets more content and a modding community.

I have no words, downloaded this game to mix it up from ghost hunting games but to keep with the Cryptid genre and I have no regrets. Not a single one. If they released an expansion with additional maps I would be the first to add it to my wish list.

Myself and my husband have been wanting this game forever as we are huge into the Cryptids and this game when we saw the previews set a fire under us to want to get it. We played and defeated the Wendigo and the Strigoi and are moving onto the Mothman soon we couldnt be more happy to have bought this game and support the creators at the same time. I WOULD 10000000000% recommend this game to my friends.

Why is there no bossfight in the mothman story hunt, like what is the point of having all those weapons if I cannot use them in any meaningful way? So far Mothman is a big dissapointment... I wish the other two monsters got focus instead, more interactive map and stuff like that.

'Absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. Idiotic monsters that pose no real threat. My first death was not from the unrelenting attacks from the wendigo but from falling off a cliff. Mind you the cliff was about three feet off the ground. Im almost positive these devs jack it in their moms basement watching the reruns of ghostfacers from supernatural.
Honestly kinda lame you just do like little puzzles to insta-kill the cryptids. Did 65% of the game in 90 minutes and got bored

The game is hot garbage until they implement a progress save. No one except people who never touch grass want to play these super long boards without being able to take a break and pick it up later.
So far the game has been pretty good. Few bugs tho. In game chat wont work says that it has it but cant get it working. Graphics are great but bugs with the wolves. Few times they have attacked but they are no where to be seen. All in all i would say it is a great game and would recommend once chat gets working

Игра сделана действительно неплохо- крепенькое инди приключение на час с другом, стрельба приятная, контроллер игрока позволяет без проблем перемещаться по карте, нормальное повествование сюжета. Понравилось, что игра не душная, несколько раз развлекает довольно хорошими эффектами и монстром, финал тоже понравился из-за выбора концовки.

Tento projekt od studia Liquid Donkey Games se vás snaží vtáhnout do role profesionálního lovce nadpřirozených bytostí. Což mi připomnělo americký seriál Lovci duchů (Supernatural), kde bratři společně loví monstra. Zde nejste jen ozbrojený dobrodruh, ale spíš vyšetřovatel, stopař a stratég v jedné osobě. i'm ONLY saying no because it's not worth $17.99. I think it's a game better purchased on sale
there are three story levels, and i can assure you this is a game you will want to play with friends, not solo. we all agreed the best level is the [spoiler] Strigoi [/spoiler] level - these levels are pretty short, and the puzzles are okay, but the [spoiler] Strigoi [/spoiler] had the most to do. the enemies are also pretty buggy and too weak at times, but the concepts and designs are super cool!
i did really want to love this game, and i do, i just can't recommend it to others because of the price point and lack of length. to me, i KNOW the game can get better with time; i have high hopes for that cuz it feels like the dev has a passion for cryptids. they've definitely put a lot into the "plots" which is a good addition! it just feels like it is lacking.
I enjoy the game but my laptop crashed due to the game and I lost all my data plus I don't have a gun and I'm getting error's when i interact with the storage,shop, and loadout. Fix this asap please.

I loved this game since Bloodfang came out and then I saw on YouTube that Operation Blackwing was finally out and I loved it too! Surprised there's not a Discord or something to keep up with any developments, I'm really hoping for some new maps and monsters!
fun missions-based game; would love to see the dev expand the in-game universe
The base looks amazing, has great mechanics, and is surprisingly optimized for how good it looks. I am worried it will get repetitive easily so i hope they add different levels and more equipment soon. All the Story levels were amazing and were the perfect amount of story telling to help progress and explain the creatures. The wendigo level was the only exception because me and my friend couldn't figure it out for the life of us and ended up using a guide.
In short: Great base game, hope more comes out soon.

I played the new mothman level solo. I wandered around with really no direction. Found a bunch of ammo. Lit some kind of Gondorian beacon. Climbed a radio tower. Promptly got attacked by mothman and lit him on fire. He ran away like a ♥♥♥♥♥. I jumped off the radio tower trying to do some cool "blow myself up with a gas tank thing". Failed to die from the fall. Put the gas tank down and shot it. Died. I think this would be a great friend slop game albeit a bit overpriced and maybe not enough content for a 1.0 release.
I recommend this game because Mothman told me to.

This game has a good concept but a very poor execution.
Your first playthrough you'll spend 80% of your time running around the map wondering what you're supposed to do and while I'm all for player exploration and discovery there's nothing interesting worth finding.
This game could also benefit from a proper intro tutorial that explains how items are supposed to work too.
Game definitely needed more time in the oven before fully releasing.

The concept is super cool, the execution though lacks hard. There's only 3 missions. They recommend 2+ players, but I beat all 3 alone. You have to complete requirements before beating each mission so it takes away the actual "hunting" concept. Mothman's was the biggest let down. You're just running in the woods until you turn on the power and get a keycard. After that it's just a flick of a switch. That's it. That's the entire kill. Maybe if they add more content and the ability to actually hunt the monsters it'd be more fun. I was expecting Van Helsing basically, and it was not that.

My friend and I loaded this ♥♥♥♥ up and started up the hunt for the windicko, we went to this cave and he scared the ♥♥♥ out of us. Would love to go to find the mooseman. did play again 10/10.
This game in its current state is terrible and It won't be getting better, the devs have made it clear that they don't plan to add more creatures to "hunt" in game and are instead going to be relying on modders to fix their game (going the paradox route)
This game is not worth the 26 NZD asking price, its like 15 bucks MAX, its a buggy mess and every single creature in game is extremely easy to beat and every encounter isn't scary and just annoying.
The creatures in game can't even be killed by our weapons either, you HAVE to do some ritual to actually kill them, the weapons in game at best just ward off the creatures, and when you fight "moth man" our weapons don't even ward him off, its literally impossible to ward him off with the weapons we are given.
I don't recommend buying this game, its got potential but its clear the devs have no interest in adding more content to the game and all they are doing now is bug fixes. If this is the entire game then Its not worth it. Don't buy it.

Absolutely loved this game! For a game created by a single developer, it's fun, intriguing, and best played with 1-2 friends (though solo play is more challenging and scary). Each time you die and reset, you learn more about the creature, its patterns, the map, etc. Very fun and entertaining game.

Absolutely one of the best horror survival games, the first map is ok, i understand it was their first so i don't hold it against them, second map was fun and scary, ending was pretty hard but still fun. Blackwing was some of the scariest and most fun gaming I've had in a while, the little story behind it and the ending was absolute cinema. 11/10

I don’t usually leave negative reviews on Steam, and I really didn’t want this to be one.
TL;DR: Folklore Hunter has strong atmosphere, cool cryptids, and some genuinely fun moments, but in its current state it feels closer to an Early Access title. There is potential here, but the content and systems need a bit more polish to justify the ~$18 price.
Visually and thematically, the game does a lot right. The cryptids are creepy and well designed, the sound design is solid, and the gunplay, especially the rifle, feels great. The Strigoi mission was easily the standout. Combat felt impactful, the Blood Moon was fun, and it showed what the game can be when mechanics and pacing line up.
Unfortunately, the main story content is very short. We finished all three stories in under 5 hours. Replayability is where things start to fall apart. The repeatable contracts often feel like emptier versions of the story missions, progression is extremely slow, and some objectives appear bugged or poorly explained, such as camera objectives not completing and unclear defeat mechanics for cryptids like Mothman.
Objective clarity in the story mode is also inconsistent. Mothman kind of guides you well, but the Wendigo mission felt directionless at times, with a lot of wandering and guessing. There are some really cool moments tied to specific points of interest, but clearer guidance would help the investigation feel more intentional rather than luck based exploration.
Combat is fun when it matters, but outside of the Strigoi, weapons often feel underutilized. Giving players more meaningful counterplay against cryptids, clearer mechanics, or additional enemy pressure like minions or phases would go a long way. Bear traps also probably need a balance, as they are very easy to abuse in 2/3 of the cryptids.
Overall, I do not dislike this game and I genuinely want to see it succeed. I understand that it's "only" $18 but in terms of value, I like to see 1 hour of enjoyable playtime per each dollar spent on the game. The foundation is strong, but it needs more content, clearer objectives, better contract variety, and bug fixes. I would happily revisit this after a few updates, but right now it feels undercooked for a full release. Really, the replayability is it's biggest shortcoming.

This is a really great game! it's fun to play, especially with friends. I found it clever that you couldn't pick up the traps once you set them down, therefore you had to use your resources wisely. I didn't really hate anything about the game, though you should add different characters/people to play as or add different clothing. I also think you should consider adding wolfman into the game. This game is already amazing even for it only being out for about a month now.

Played all three story missions. This came exceeded all of my expectations. I love how inspiration from mythology was used for these creatures and would love to see more in the future.

I'm enjoying the game. I'm a big fan of the concept to start as I'm very into the folklore type creatures. I think the execution was pretty good.

This game is very fun and a great time with friends. I havnt played in a few years and got back in with the 1.0 update and i am loving most of the changes. However, to the DEVS please please please bring back the Vampire Lord. that hunt was so much fun and i feel that now without him the strigoi hunt is not the same. Still fun but not as tense or as interesting without the big baddy that had all the cool powers and mechanics (dont want to spoil for any who never fought him). Mothman is really cool and I love the lore and how you defeat him but i would also tweak the difficulty to make him a bit harder and maybe make him stalk the players and be more silent and scary than he is now
This game has a cool concept but it loses charm quite quickly. The atmosphere started off spooky until I met the wendigo and noticed how poor the ai's pathing is. This changed the game from being creepy to instantly boring. The guns only have a slight effect on the wendigo but doesn't really damage it. After realising how unscary the game became I explored the map and found that the real way of killing the wendigo would be going through a tedious trail to find certain objects to perform a ritual. I then explored a random cave which seemed to have 10 different paths to follow and then quit.

Pretty damn fun! Reminds me of that one game where you hunt Bigfoot. With a little more time and love, this can be a good 10/10 experience! However, as it stands now, the game feels pretty bare. The Strigori map is huge and feels a bit empty. And the day night cycle goes by pretty fast. This is a big problem for the Strigoi's level as it can summon minions that, while only take one hit to kill, can easily overwhelm you if you're in the open. I am VERY excited to see where this game goes, but as of now it is a 7/10. Not bad, but can be much better.

I got this game gifted to me by a friend. They were excited for the big updated, saying that the game used to be fun back then so surely it would be better.... that was not the case. Instead I got a buggy unpolished mess.
Blue screening when you try to join a lobby and alt tab, a bunch of objects/walls you can clip into, every time I joined a friends lobby loading into a game my inventory would be glitched and filled with meat so I could pick nothing up or start with anything. You also couldn't get it OUT of your inventory so all you got to do was walk around.
Singleplayer wasn't any better, while the game at least WORKED then it didn't mean it was fun. All you did was walk around the map go "oh there's the monster again", shoot at it, run out of ammo, then die.
Yes, I know of the things like purrifying the wendigo but why bother if you don't have fun with even the base experience.
For 20$ this game is an insult. If it was 10$ maybe I'd be more forgiving but when the game has been in development for over a year and they call THIS 1.0/full release instead of just a demo or EA I will not be.

I like the atmosphere of it so far but the fact it took me over an hour to do the first mission just because it's unclear how to do it is a little much. I don't think it's quite there yet but it definitely has character. I think some more variety could do the game wonders. Making the objective just sliiiiightly more intuitive and randomizing those objectives for each cryptid would potentially be a life saver for this game. It could be interesting to see a multi-cryptid mode or some other variences as well. I'll hold off on this one for now but I plan to come back to it when it gets a new big update. Good work so far, devs.
Jogo muito bom, A hunt do Wendigo é divertida e te dá uma boa noção de como será o jogo, a do Strigoi sem dúvias a melhor de todas, é demorada, tem elementos de caça, dá medo, realmente a melhor. A do mothman é decepcionante o plothist é legal, mas ainda sim é o pior dos 3. Levei 12 horas pra zerar o jogo todo, o mapa é muito bem feito, a atmosfera é maravilhosa. No geral nota 8/10, recomendo jogarem. espero ter próximos capítulos no futuro!
Beautiful game, one of the best in the niche cryptid hunting genre. With a little more polish I think it could be one of the best not only Cryptid Hunting games, but also one of the best horror games.
Loved it! No other game out there that i know of where you can fight a friggin Mothman. I liked you you have to complete each creature's story mode to before starting their respective contract. Although there were times when i got confused but still loved playing this game. Cant wait for future tweaks and updates, really hoping they add more cryptids to the roster.
Currently this is unplayable as a multiplayer game without some sort of external communication as there is no in game voice chat. There isn't even an in game text chat option. The people I want to paly this with rely on in game chat to communicate, they can't use things like discord. It's a shame because this looked really fun. But with the release of 1.0, it's honestly disgraceful to not have a fully functioning multiplayer and still act like it's a multiplayer game.

Has actual good concepts that surprise and scare. circus and house disappearing are really cool concepts.
AI works terribly, despite many updates and bug fixes from dev.
Strigoi:
just call it a vampire. The gameplay is really cool, I like that shooting the creature actually kills it unlike the other missions.
The map is absolutely empty, and reuses assets too often.
Mothman:
cool story, great voice acting.

Not bad. Fun idea and decent implementation. Like some of the people before me said, a lot of the items feel more or less useless a lot of the time. Definitely less of a 'hunting' game and more of a linear storyline game, which is fine. Implementation of hunter sense on your Q just ends up being a loot/objective locator. The footprint/foliage part is almost completely useless.
Objectives can feel confusing at times, especially the first level. The Strigoi mission was downright frustrating, although it's a bit more in line with the tracker/hunter theme.
Also, creator took a lot of, erm, artistic liberties with some of the monsters. Mothman is a legendary creature from West Virginia, deep in the Appalachian wilderness. it was a strange decision to make his level an island. Would enjoy the game more if the monster and level designs stuck to the folklore. Mothman kind of just felt like an OC with a Mothman model.
Overall, very promising game. Don't know if it feels like an 18.00 dollar game at the moment, though. 6.5/10

✔️ Enemies feel mechanically different - Each creature asks you to learn something new, whether that’s how to track it, how to weaken it, or how to survive long enough to deal with it. That variety kept the hunts engaging early on.

❌ No player customization - For a multiplayer game, it’s disappointing not to have any real way to personalize your hunter, especially when you’re meant to play together long-term and looking different from eachother will help identify your friends..
❌ Post-story missions lose momentum - Once the main story beats are done, the follow-up content doesn’t have the same pull, making repeat sessions feel less exciting.
❌ Endings hinge too heavily on final choices - While there are multiple endings, most of them come down to a last-moment decision rather than being shaped by how you handled the mission as a whole.
Conclusion
I don’t think this game is quite there yet, but I do think it has a really solid foundation. The first few hunts were great, especially with friends, and I liked learning how each creature worked instead of just running in guns blazing. Where it struggles for me is longevity. Once you’ve seen the stories and understand the mechanics, there isn’t enough variation pushing you to come back and do things differently. With more systems that reward repeat play or more meaningful branching outcomes tied to your actions, this could turn into something special.

This is pretty poorly designed game. Few people beat even one level on this game mostly because there is no direction or nudging as to what to do. Then, after you complete the first level you are rewarded with no unlocks. Somehow, the dev believes that we need to complete multiple convoluted missions before we unlock any new items or equipment.
My friends and I were excited because the setting looked phenomenal and atmospheric but what we got is learning to exploit terrible enemy AI, exhausting searches and dead ends, and endless rocks that vaguely look like thatch-roof houses.
I do not recommend getting this game at this point.
***SPOILERS BELOW***
Spawn into a mission with friends and receive no nudges toward what you do. There is no good hints. The cave is a featureless labyrinth. Some landmarks move including the starter house and a carnival spawns which does nothing discernable but allows you to ride the world's slowest ferris wheel. Once you explore the map you find landmarks and put your brains together and solve the tedious puzzle and then formulate a plan to exploit the AI's jankiness and trick him onto the portal to trap him. I believe that the skull heads direct the beast somehow. We used meat and cameras along with a little flushing from another player in a spot above the cave, which is unreachable to the AI, flush him towards another player between cave and portal, who sacrifices himself but leads him to the player at the portal who traps him with baited bear traps and begins the ritual. Finally finished the first mission, along with only 4% of the rest of the player base because I assume most people get bored of the game's tedium.
Not worth 17.99 in its current state
The gameplay can be fun with a good group of friends, but in the same way a good group of friends can enjoy a bad movie.
There are only 3 levels, only one of them (mothman) has actual unique mechanics/things happening.
Every single level in the game, less than 0.1% of players have completed.
Each level takes atleast an hour to complete, and you will spend the entire time wandering aimlessly looking for clues/hints that are not well laid at all. We had to google the solution to one of the levels after spending over 2 hours searching it.
After completing all 3 hunts, I have no reason to launch the game again, the progression is not interesting, and the hunts are not fun enough to replay even once.
I sincerely wish the best for the devs, and I hope their game gets better.
But for now, its a no.
I want to like this game but it's just not fun and it actively works against the player. Not worth 20 bucks, ask my friend Jeo he knows.
Not what I expected but way better. Story was kinda fun would definitely give it a try
I honestly had a silly fun time playing this with friends! We completed The Mothman a couple of times. We moved on to another after, and did get a bit stuck with no direction. But we started getting the hang of it after a while and are gonna rope some other friends into joining also!

I think the game overall is good. The one thing I'd say it's missing is some sort of guide (especially for bloodfang forest). Is it worth the $20? Debatable. I think if you get stuck on your first play through, you'll want to refund it. Once you actually figure out how to "play" the game, I think it's worth it! The graphics are really good for an indie game imo. Hope they add additional cryptids in the future.
I really enjoy this game so far but I have a semi major gripe with it. The Journal. Reading the tutorial for it I assumed I would be able to use it in the Story Hunts to review the clues I've already found and finding out it was just not available in the Story Hunts was confusing and a little annoying. I have high hopes for future updates since The Mothman update was rather fun to go through.
Honestly, I've had such good fun with this game. I definitely think you should do Bloodfang Forest first, followed by Blackwing & then Wendigo to close it out. I feel like the developers really hit their stride with Blackwing & Bloodfang, in the sense that, they feel more put together. Don't get me wrong, the Wendigo was really fun, but, you'll get a better understanding of what exactly you're doing by playing them first. I look forward to playing the future updates.
