I have been experienceing peak after peak, From finding the best girl In wayhaven chronicles and being a detective, To a powerful mage before that in Leas city of the sun. And am excited to say That the train of absoutely amazing world building and interesting characters doesnt stop with Fallen hero Rebirth. This game is everything you would want a becoming the villan story. (Even though im still kinda playing abit good and have a few doubts about my boy) BUT MAN DO I LOVE BEING EVIL it has never been so fun and this game drives that point home damm well. I was having a blast with this game. It was definetly a diffrent experience than the other two i described but in no way is it any less than them and i can see this game being alot of peoples top game. If you love playing the role of the villan then this game may be for you and maybe even abit of an anti hero? Whos to say your really the bad guy in all this? Either way this review is becoming abit long, Its not the straight romancy stuff i normally play and love but it just hits every action note so well and is an amazing exsperience in a completely diffrent way that i didnt know These types of games could pull off. Looking at the Software used for this game i know exactly how much love went into this game and it really shows. Seeings how these games are made and how much coding really goes into it gives you a much deeper appeication for these games. Anyway ill end it here im Yapping Another masterpiece and looking to see how everything develops in the next game. ( i just bought it)
My actual playtime is 12 hours including the demo which transfers your progress to the purchased game. The demo gives you a good sense of what the rest of the game will be like and I highly recommend you try it before looking at reviews that might spoil the story. Definitely going to play the sequel.
I didn't write a review for this already? How has that happened? I have bought both books currently out on Steam, and Choice of Games, and have been a Patron and a memeber of the discord for ages. Hell yes I recomend. This book is quite possibly one of the greatest Choose Your Own style books I've ever read.

Deserves all the praise it gets !
First book of the series, you start with action and learn bit by bit what has happened to and around you. Loved how the moments and situations are clearly separated yet fluidly mixed together one after the other (as in, it's not weird that you pick variable A in situation B without it irking you about feasibility). The amount of variables is *crazy* and somehow Malin manages to type the characters with such humanity (or lack of it), that this series became one addiction of mine.
Mind that you need to add in an email (CoG) to have a save of your choices and to transfer it into the following chapters.

Fallen Hero is a Choose Your Own Adventure game by Malin Ryden, written in ChoiceScript, a language that powers a lot of games under the Choice of Games and Hosted Games labels.
I have read/played a ton of these games and Fallen Hero is absolutely one of the very very best I've seen.
It's a superhero tale, but seen through the prism of a hero-turned-underground-villain, formerly known as Sidestep, who decided to abandon their short hero carrier after a traumatic and disastrous mission. They return to the city of Los Diablos to prepare their "rebirth" as a villain, but taking care not to leave any clues to their former identity.
It's a brilliantly written, gritty, emotional story with a [i]staggering[/i] amount of choices to make. A lot of these games have brilliant prose or compelling stories or satisfying playtimes or great reactivity to your choices but it is incredibly rare to see one that has ALL of these.
I personally enjoyed it even more because I was in a state of anger and bitterness at the time I played this, and it provided a wonderful outlet to pour all my emotions into. I wanted to play an angry, pretty ruthless, isolated, broken, angry (at the world and at herself) protagonist and the game delivered exactly that. But you could also play a redemptive protagonist, that should work too!
I really enjoyed the game of cat and mouse, the danger of your identity being discovered by heroes and you former friends, the feeling of being both hunter and prey, the interesting choice of powers (it's revealed early on but I prefer to put it behind a spoiler; Sidestep is [spoiler]a telepath[/spoiler]).
If I had to pick one negative point, it is that the way the protagonist's backstory is slowly revealed over the course of several flashbacks makes it that you are not yet aware of the important bits of their backstory and motivations. For me, the bitterness of the writing and the "payback against heroes" narrative were enough to hook me straight away, but I know I usually prefer to know the character's motivations early on when building their personnality.
But do not fear! The revelation happens in the sequel, which is even better that this one!

Testament to what videogame storytelling could and should be. This game still dominates my thoughts even months after finishing it. Extremely highly recommended if anything on the proverbial cover even slightly intrigues you, and frankly even if it doesn't, you might learn something new about yourself.

It's a common joke amongst the fandom that every time someone asks for recommendations, [i]Fallen Hero: Rebirth[/i] ("FH") meets at least one of their recommendations. Want to play as a villain? FH. Want to play as a trans character and explore gender? FH. Want a slowburn, friends-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers? Play FH. Want great writing? Play FH! Needless to say, my expectations were sky high—which, sadly, backfired. Don't get me wrong, FH is an objectively good work: nicely written, a small yet appealing cast, a fascinating take on the superhero genre, and some clever social commentary. I quite liked it! However, with that kind of reputation, my expectations were … extremely high. I went in braced for something transcendent, but I don't think it cracks my top 3 series, personally. A large portion of that is, admittedly, my very personal and picky cons.
You play Sidestep, a hero turned villain with telepathy. You can control people or mentally manipulate them, and eventually you gain a “puppet,” a comatose patient used as a second body to carry out your deeds. Why commit evil? The narrative doesn’t fully tell you. Sidestep is unpleasant—full of trauma, angst, and stubbornness—which makes it hard to trust or empathize with their perspective.
[b][h2]Pros:[/h2][/b]
✅[b] Good worldbuilding.[/b] The game begins with two pages of exposition. I got a bit nervous—is this well-acclaimed game going to start with a lore dump? Thankfully, not. All the most important bits are mentioned in the beginning, then threaded carefully throughout the plot. I found it believable how superpowers came to exist in this world. Heroes and villains are not born; they're made. Long story short, it involves federalism, capitalism, drugs, and government control (or the lack of it). Again, realistic and believable. There's also a timeline of important events, as well. I particularly appreciated how telepathic powers worked. They're not a [i]deus ex machina[/i] at all. There are rules to the power system: the more targets you have, or the farther your targets are, the more difficult it will be for Sidestep. Hop into someone's head for too long, and you'll get physically ill. Superheroes are mentally strong enough to fight you off; some villains are so consumed with hate that you can't mind-control them. This design choice is a good way to put restraints on the MC without making them a doormat.
✅[b] Complex cast.[/b] The case is small, but even in one book, I can see how they're not what they appear. Your ex-associates, The Rangers, are the pinnacle of heroism. (Well, more than you at any rate.) Herald is the pure golden boy who worships the person you once were; Lady Argent is rather cool and stand-offish; Marshel Steel is the war veteran who doesn't quite trust you; and, of course, much has been said about Oretga, your past ... something. There's also Doctor Mortum, the mad yet charismatic scientist. I liked them more than I liked Sidestep, honestly!
✅[b] Central ideas.[/b] FH is at its most interesting when it leans into themes of duplicity and performance. Sidestep is never just one person: they’re a body, a mind, a puppet, a mask, a role someone else expects them to play. The puppet mechanic is a literalization of dissociation, control, and self-fragmentation. The fact that you can inhabit another body, present a different gender, choose a new name, and move through the world more comfortably as someone who isn’t you is telling. Is it an allegory for being gay? For being trans? For feeling different? YES. Thoughts bleed into actions, masks slip, and the line between who Sidestep “really is” and who they pretend to be gets increasingly blurry.
✅ [b] Pacing.[/b] The pacing is surprisingly tight for a book 1. The story moves forward with a clear sense of momentum, rarely lingering too long on any one scene. However, there are big emotional beats, action sequences, and quieter introspective moments that are interwoven in the game. A chapter on villainy or suit building follows relationship building. Even when the game slows down to sit in Sidestep’s head (which it does, a lot), it usually feels intentional rather than indulgent. There’s a steady push toward the inevitable confrontation, and that forward motion helped me stay engaged even when I wasn’t fully sold on the MC.
✅[b] State page.[/b] I love how the game's thematic ideas are also reflected in the stat page. Imagine my surprise when I open the stat page and am greeted with not only Sidestep's relationship bar with the cast, but also my puppet's relationship bar. Sidestep and Ortega's relationship is "it's complicated"; my puppet and Ortega's relationship is "flirting." That was rather unsettling and a bit of a mindf*ck. Also, the stat bars are not the usual red and blue—they're a beautiful light blue and orange?! Come on, authors, add some color to your stats! A sweet lavender, perhaps, or a forest green?
[b][h2]Cons:[/h2][/b]
🟥[b] Unlikable MC.[/b] I wasn't expecting this. Sidestep reminds me of the ronin in [i]Samurai of Hyuga[/i], where the protagonist isn't you/a self-insert, but a defined character going through their own arc. Sidestep becomes a villain due to their ~traumatic backstory~ and frankly, they're hard to like. I don't think the author intended this, actually, but a [i]lot[/i] of their internal narration veers into prolonged “woe is me” territory where life sucks, and they want vengeance. While their trauma is mechanically well-written, I, sadly, don't have time for self-pity. And before anyone gets up in arms—I say this as someone who used to have depression! For ME, a part of my recovery was realizing that, yeah, it actually was "all in my head" and being a depressed teenager was actually "not that deep." This is probably a me issue, but Sidestep reads more as frustratingly passive.
🟥[b] Unclear past/motives.[/b] This is more of an objective continuation to the above con. Sidestep frequently fixates on revenge—how they were wronged, betrayed, and irreparably damaged—yet the narrative withholds the full picture for a long time. Sidestep's past comes in flashbacks, and they're a bit of an unreliable narrator (more on this later). The result is a disconnect: you’re asked to emotionally buy into Sidestep’s motivation before you’re given all the context needed to judge it. I'm supposed to root for [spoiler]blowing up a museum[/spoiler] for ... what?
🟥[b] Unreliable narrator.[/b] Again, I don't know if Rydén intended this, but I found Sidestep's actions not exactly matching up with their memories. Or that there was a disconnect for me as the reader. They frame themselves as deeply wronged and emotionally abandoned, yet the timeline doesn’t always support that self-image. Mild story spoilers, but [spoiler] seven years pass without a single word to Ortega, and somehow Sidestep still positions themselves as the injured party. From Ortega’s perspective, that silence would be brutal—and honestly, completely unforgivable. If I were Oretga, I would kick their ass tbh. Ortega practically begs for Sidestep to open up to them, but they’re just “no, you wouldn’t understand 💔🥀.”[/spoiler] Similarly, the narrative is full of paranoia when it comes to Steel, but I actually liked and understood him! So he’s not jumping for joy when he sees you. So what? Haven’t you proven his suspicions right? Like, babe, I know you’re depressed, but have you tried making an appointment with your PCP? Have you perhaps tried picking up a new hobby? I hear pickleball is all the rage.

其实感觉第一部主角到底经历了什么以及转变的动机都有点vague...作者老在这谜语人我根本看不懂想表达啥，感觉能从只言片语里品出点信息，但不多（毕竟我脑子不太好使除非作者明明白白写出来不然我是体会不到的...）在第一部本质上这还是个未解释的谜团，这就导致玩家始终不清楚MC真实动机，有点无法代入真实情感去玩，不知道第二部信息会不会更多一点。
虽然不是很能理解主角背后的秘密，但我是只会溺爱的主角厨！！而且作者的心理描写十分到位！所以本人全程都带着老父亲or老母亲的微笑看着MC！

作者文笔非常不错，剧情安排紧凑而且行云流水，有些场景甚至写出了电影感。特别是MC执行任务的倒数第二段回忆以及结局尾声那里，不得不感叹文字的力量真是强大啊。
人物描写也非常不错，没有脸谱化。如果选择和一个RO（Ortega）曾经的双向暗恋的设定，后面MC和TA的拉扯会非常美味[spoiler]Ortega和MC见面吵架的剧情也是神来之笔的，曾经意气风发和你出生入死打嘴炮的crush假死7年后破碎颓废地出现在你面前，你想救TA但对方却始终像层薄雾一样看不透也抓不住...而且还摆出一幅曾经的情谊无足轻重的样子...MC你别嘴硬了！！看得我抓心挠肝啊[/spoiler][spoiler]到最后终于把Ortega那b小胡子给整没了，我同意MC这男人根本没有任何品味...[/spoiler]

Very good, extremely emotional, takes you places you don't expect and makes you have so many mixed feelings. Hardly an interactive experience (there are many many choices, but you don't get to feel them in this one, it all feels like a setup, I hope they matter in 2nd and 3rd books) and the replayability is nonexistent (due to that). Even though there is more text than you get on the first playthrough, in practice you always get to see 90% of the story. There are some errors as expected, both in continuity and description, sometimes the choices are impossible to understand. The two replays were almost slogs, because apart from trying hardest to craft a different character it all turned into basically the same (with slightly different spices/flavour on top) apart from a 10 minute emotional scene. I played it in total 3 times.
Tip: You can get all the most emotional scenes in one playthrough (aside from one where you [spoiler] pick between 2 characters [/spoiler]), you just have to [spoiler] keep your relationship fairly positive with everybody, romance them and be personal [/spoiler]

I have to not recommend because of the gendercult nonsense in the game. Now it seems like it may have been forced by "Hosted Games" as it isn't pervasive everywhere. The story is pretty good. Not amazing. You choices mattering are about average. for a choose your own adventure game. Where some games pretty much railroad you and others, like choice of robots, gives you a lot of meaningful choices this is at a middle ground if a little below that. The entire game is building you up to becoming a villain and ends with your debut. I found no interest at all in the love interest in game they were both relatively boring characters. Though you are allowed to date to manipulate which is a good twist.
By the end of the game you're left feeling like it was all building up for the sequel however it has been 7 years now and so far as I can see there is no sequel. Might be missing it. If one exists depending on how well made it is I might be able to switch my no recommendation to a yes recommendation.

Very digestible read with good balance between describing and leaving things to one's imagination.
The story and characters themselves are already very engaging - I'd definitely buy a book if it was one. Then the choices/customisation player is allowed on top of that definitely add excitement and overall emotional investment. I see me replaying this in the future.
The best heavy text game I've played so far. Likely about to be topped by the sequel I'm about to buy.

An intriguing start to an excellent series of interactive novels, I would heartily recommend it to anyone interested in the medium (and who is fine with a superpowers type story).
It would have been great if you didn't have to buy the second game to discover the story. Despite its amount of words the game's still a prologue that ends [spoiler] once you finish building your suit [/spoiler]. Not worth full price.
I realized why most negative reviews are what they are.
Those people expected to have some sort of complete free reign over the story and everything like that like it's some sort of villain life simulator that's going to all be about you.
But it isn't. This game isn't a simulator for being a villain. It's a *story.* Yeah, you get to customize your character and choose what you do, and there are countless different options and thought out paths, but in the end your character isn't going to be you. At least not entirely. Because this game isn't your story; it's theirs.
And the reason why people like the Fallen Hero series is because it's a really well-written story. In my opinion, it's the best story I've ever had told to me, including books and other games.
...And to those who might disagree in terms of FH: Rebirth, this one is meant as an introduction. It succeeds in everything it was meant to be, and does it well. And trust me, even if you feel like there isn't enough customization and choices (for now, at least-- it only gets better from here and you have like two characters to customize)... there's so much you do that impact the story over the course of the next two books after this without you even noticing. Maybe it'll feel like you don't have impact, but you do. You really do. It's just hidden. Stats (friendships, personality) and decisions (did you choose to be risky doing this one thing or not?) are important to many things
Like the doors, and whether people know who you are.
Also, istg I was so annoyed when practically every criminal knew who I was after playing through the second time because no one did my first play through. While that's a book two thing, I bet things you do here influence it. Malin is a crazy enough writer to add that type of depth.
In short, if you're looking for a simulator, this isn't for you. If you're looking for a good story with mystery, romance, action, and so many different paths you can take I'm surprised Malin hasn't dropped dead, this is for you.
And if you still aren't sure I recommend checking out the demo. It'll give you a general tone of Malin's writing (that only gets better) and makes sure you like the direction it's going in.
And while not a lot may happen, keep in mind this is the introduction. You need to become a villain first to BE a villain.

This is for Fallen Hero: Rebirth and Retribution. As I bought both on steam, by played via APP store. I've only played one proper route at this point, and it's wonderfully written.
It aches to play, the characters and the main character are so fleshed out, that I feel like I'm hurting real people. Definitely recommend, might add more thoughts once i play through the games a bit more.

This is top tier interactive fiction - Choose your own adventure books on steroids.
The first of a series, this does a great job of striding the line between compelling on its own, and being an entire game of character creation.
Don't skip this one on your way to Retribution and Revelations.
The writing was good and the choices were interesting. I'm new to this genre but was glad I gave it a shot.
Plus it uses very few resources so you can accidentally keep it running in the background for days and achieve 100 hours played on a COYA novel haha
Kind of an unbelievable labor of love. I've roped multiple friends into playing this game. I'm not usually the kind of guy to replay games like these but I just got the urge again a year later to start it up and run it back.

i really like the story
I don't know if Malin would like to hear this, but at first, I completely pirated this game. I found it on some website and I wanted to try it out. The whole "interactive fiction" genre was pretty new to me, and safe to say: I loved it. From the story, to the characters, to the stat chart, to even the tiniest of details, it was all really great to me.
If you were to afford it, this game is great for its price. Hell, I might be on my 10th play through already (Ignore my hours I've probably spent more). So please, try this game out. If you have dyslexia or reading just not for you I get it, but if you can just spend at least maybe a few mins reading each chapter, I'm sure it'll be great.
Malin if you are seeing this, thank you for making such an AMAZING game. I love Ortega, Steel, Herald, Dr. Mortum, and all of the wonderful characters you've created within this story. I wish you the best of luck with your situation right now, and hope that your mom's health gets better.
Other than that, Fallen Hero Rebirth (and Retribution if you get to try it) is a great game. 10/10

This is my favorite interactive fiction story I have ever read.
Would not recommend. The prose doesn't have good flow and why you should care at all about the story isn't established well: the MC's motivation isn't adequately explained.
I think the sign of a well written game is when I feel bad actually BEING a villain and being mean, because I like the characters too much.
Book 1 is on the briefer side, but it's very good at establishing the world and characters, and very engaging. I recommend it.
This game is so good, by far being the best series made for hosted games. The depth of the characters, the customization options, the way it handles gender identity and depression, all while being set into a cool alt history super hero cyberpunk setting make it one of my favourite works of fiction out there.
The story is told in first person and the players past is pretty established. The player decides how the protagonist reacts to develops and what motivates a former telepathic super hero to become a villain 🦹♀️ you can choose the gender of the romantic interests or do it randomly. I did mine randomly and now I can’t imagine the charicters any other way. The way even the smallest actions effects the outcome of the story is staggering. Even if you are burned out by super hero stories I still highly recommend it.

Por mais que tudo tenha sido desenvolvido com bastante mérito e carinho e isso inclui, todos os personagens, mundo, tecnologia e principalmente, protagonista, é bastante perceptível que a novel não consegue criar uma conexão tão boa quando se retira os personagens secundários e, por algum motivo, as cenas individuais acabam sendo monótonas e cansativas.
Talvez, a situação negativa pode ter sido impactada pela duração, mas definitivamente sinto que é algo bem mais pessoal do que necessariamente culpa de suas 4 horas de duração, afinal o 'jogo' conseguiu ser interessante o suficiente para fazer com que personagens que apareceram poucas vezes rapidamente se tornassem uma grande fonte de interesse.
Pretendo futuramente me aventurar mais nas variações de narrativa e também em suas sequências, contudo vou esperar o fim da obra para realmente sentir o peso das minhas ações de uma só vez.

虽然提供了不同行为动机的选项给玩家选择，但总感觉很多关键的东西语焉不详，全程让人觉得藏了个大的但是没具体说是啥，导致了可能没法让人特别坦然接受并代入坚决跳反的理由（即使是自己选的）。不管怎么选都有种中二发作既视感，不过比较好的是也提供了类似于自己也没什么方向感只是感觉必须这么做这种选项。
不过对我个人而言问题不大，因为没有hurt/comfort桥段就自己主动创造hurt/comfort实在是太有乐趣了......无法拒绝！一种很合理的从逻辑层面接受剧情中二行为的自我说服理由：为了跟过去与之had a thing的队友互相折磨而主动跳反不是很好味吗！:3
总之目前为止都很有趣，等玩了续作可能会再补充这边:D

Pretty solid for a standard COG. It's a decent warm up but don't expect the hero rise trilogy. Def wait for a sale.
This is a good read. The first page scared me with its cringe-worthy mixed metaphors; but the writing quickly proved to be quite good after that teeth-grinder of an open. In my opinion.
Anyway, I'm a fast reader and I didn't spend a lot of time mulling over the choices in the story. But that doesn't mean they are weightless or meaningless. Instead, I apparently had a vision of the character I had chosen to play that meshed pretty well with what the author had allowed for. This is high praise from me. This title and its successor are among the best reads in this format that I've come across.
I'm looking forward to the continuation of the series. While I wait, I'm going to take at least one more play through of both of these games as a completely different character.

Fantastic experience. It is like playing as Kira from Death Note but in the My Hero Academia’s world. Pure 4d chess. It really feels like you are in absolute control of the narrative and that every choice matters to the smallest detail.
Shame I can’t also recommend the sequel.

The week I began playing Fallen Hero I was obsessed to the point that I tracked down the creator, Malin Ryden, on Patreon because I wanted to pay [i] more money [/i] to ensure she understands that her work is both extremely appreciated and of extremely high quality.
I cannot wait for the rest of the series to release and I hope Ryden never stops making these novels/games because they are incredible.
So, what makes Fallen Hero so different from other choose your own adventure novels/games?
The choices you make in Fallen Hero, nearly all of them, have genuine gameplay impacts, whether or not you notice them. Some of your choices will have an immediate impact while others slowly build up. Some fly under the radar until you play the next installment in the series.
Your character feels both like their own individual with a past and inner life while also being extremely unique and personal to you based on the choices you've made.
The narrative too finds a way to balance being extremely engaging and satisfying while also allowing you to heavily influence it via your choices and character options.
[i] Fallen Hero truly feels like a novel come to life [/i], one where you are the main character, because that is exactly what it is. No path feels right or wrong, cannon or inconsequential, as long as it is the path you want to take, because Ryden treats all of them like they are the main narrative and every possible iteration of the story and characters has something interesting to explore, meaning this game has a massive amount of replayability.
That being said, each installment of the series builds on the previous installments, meaning as the series goes on the exponentially expanding web of choices grows ever larger and more complex. Ryden does not back down and flatten the characters or narrative so that everything is reset to a factory default that can be built off of for the next part of the series. Your characters complexity only grows, as does the complexity of the narrative.
I'm sure once the third novel/game comes out I'll end up replaying the first and second ones all over again (and again and again) to see what choices I made all the way back in the beginning end up coming back to reward or haunt me.
That being said, I never feel punished by the narrative. I may make a bad choice, but that bad choice may lead to new and interesting options, ones I haven't seen or considered before, ones I may not have otherwise gotten. Sometimes the bad choice is the right choice [i] for me [/i] because of who I want my character to be or what direction I want the narrative to go in.
This really is a game that rewards you for exploring.
That all being said, [b] I highly recommend you play each of these games "blind" the first time. No spoilers, no guides, no saves. [/b] Just choose what feels right to you.
After you've done one blind playthrough of the first game, I recommend replaying and exploring it to find what choices lead you to a character and narrative you feel satisfied with before moving on to playing the next game "blind".
[b] If you want to explore all possible options or are struggling to decide what you want for your character/narrative [/b], especially because there is no "undo" or "save/load" button, then I recommend using a CoG Save Manager and the Do U Wanna Build A Sidestep guide.

A pretty good supervillian/hero adventure. Some of the choices feel a little stiff, but there's enough flexibility throughout (and in the sequel) that you can change who you want to be if you feel like it.

6-13 hours to complete, Fallen Hero: Rebirth is a text-based RPG with a rare villain protagonist. LGBTQ+ friendly with optional romance, it’s a pretty amazing fallen superhero novel where every choice you make feels like you’ve made the correct one where you choose the tone and level of violence. 385,000+ words and the first book of three, the next in the series being Fallen Hero: Retribution then Fallen Hero: Revelations. Reaching the end of the novel saves that game and brings it into the second novel, and so forth. Overall, it’s a fantastic novel to invest your time into; the only thing I can complain about is the lack of a save/load system and the fact that you can’t backtrack to see the results of other choices unless you start a new game.

This is well-written and fun. Choices really feel like they matter. This is such a great game.
Really liked it, setting, story and choices are all great. Worked flawlessly on my Steam Deck, even allowed me to control the game fully with just touchscreen controls.
The overall premise of this game is something I wish more devs/authors would explore, hopefully with writing as stellar as this.

Possibly one of the finest Interactive Novels ever written.
I know, I know, that sounds like I'm just sucking up to the author, but bare with me. The characterisation is absolutely incredible, making you give a damn about not just the main character but the NPCs as well. The choices have legitimate weight, dramatically changing the path of the storyline and the development of the character not just in this episode, but also the ongoing sequels.

The best written only game i've ever played
Unbelievably good game. I left a more in-depth review for the second game, but it applies to this one, too.
It's definitely shorter and with less branching paths than the first, but the amount of choices and the diversity of each run is still surprising and impressive. The second game is leagues ahead, but for what this game was doing, which is setting up the launching off point, it did a great job.
Thank you to Malin who makes these amazing games. They are a legend. I hope to see the third one, soon!
Having recently read a few of these text-based interactive fictions of varying quality, I find myself very fortunate to have read Fallen Hero first. It really showcases the potential for this medium and I'm craving to find more that evoke the same depth of emotion.
Fallen Hero has exceptional writing and very human characters. I thought the romance was gripping. Overall it just has a certain rare je ne sais quoi. I couldn't help but binge this and it's sequel.
A great villain adventure on its own. You start as an ex-hero with an established backstory, and slowly uncover parts of your history while preparing for your big villain debut.
It's a great start, but unfortunately the 2nd part, Retribution, falls off hard. Treated as a stand-alone, Rebirth is worth recommending, just pretend there's no sequel.
Incredibly well-written. No matter what you do, it feels like you picked the "one true path". Incredibly responsive to your decisions, mentioning seemingly everything in the middle of passages an hour or more after you made the choice. By far the best text adventure/CYOA I've ever played.
Ok this was a ride. I could not stop playing this even thought I should be doing different things. I feel like there is so many paths you can take. Things you can skip without really knowing that they are there. And some decisions were hard ngl
One problem I have (which I feel like will be solved in the next game probably) is I don’t really feel like I know the reasons why MC wants to be villain and have revenge on the world so badly. Like I get a feeling why and I am really really looking forward to learn more. I kinda feel like I have skipped some intro or something like that. Or maybe read something wrong

对超英题材完全无感但我真香了，它不是一个刻板印象中的关于超英的故事。剧情大概是昔日hero小队的主角[spoiler]假死[/spoiler]归来，决心当反派搞大事，顺便和曾经的队友相爱相杀。从第三章开始剧情节奏快很多，很吸引人，基本上是一口气打完了。
角色塑造也都很有特点，队友和Dr和主角的互动都很萌，[spoiler]Ortega磕死我了也太官配了一点服了你们。[/spoiler]
选项分支很多，多周目性强，判定也不是很难，选择会得到积极的回应，基本不管怎么选都能奇怪地爽到（…），作者也能给出合理的解释自圆其说。
缺点：我不知道作者选择将主角的过去和复仇动机作为一个秘密是否是一个好的选择，但我在初期因此很难受，很难和主角共情。
总之我好喜欢啊啊啊啊啊啊啊啊啊啊！！！Ortega！！！

As renowned as this series is among the CoG community, it's definitely a little rough around the edges. Despite this however, I think playing this game is worth it just because the sequel is quite good.
The game is a bit of a slow buildup to an explosive climax. On a first playthrough, the game is quite fun. However, on following playthroughs, the game can feel a bit boring even when taking large breaks between playthroughs, as rereading some of the slower parts and vague descriptions can be tiring. A lot of this comes down to just already knowing information from a first playthrough so the mystique and secrecy comes off as vague and droning, but that's a problem most games have so it's not a bug deal. I will say that the writing in the second book is much better than this. Not to say it's bad in this one, but it's easier to re-read book two.
Characters:
The cast is interesting and characters develop through this book and the next as well, with each arc feeling thought out, even if they're not the "main companion". The pacing is great so you don't have to worry about a character developing too fast and your relationship stagnating.
Combat:
While not the most in-depth or intricate, being able to define your strategy and having a few options to do so, really made the combat in the latter-half of the game fun. You get to make your own super-suit, and what changes you make to it can really affect the outcome of your battles.
Romance:
It exists, I guess? It's definitely not the main focus of the book so don't go expecting anything crazy, or expect as much interaction with ROs as the wayhaven series. It's not bad though, and the characters are well-written enough that you don't need to romance people to find out more about them.
Branching:
There are some choices to be made in this game but too be honest you won't see the larger effects until book 2(which has a lot of branching). A lot of the choices in this game come down to managing character relationships which may affect later choices.
