I don't know how this game doesn't have even higher ratings, it is incredibly good. If you like turn based 4x games, buy it. If you are a fan of the old Masters of Orion games, buy it. If you like playing board games like Settlers of Catan, buy it. That may seem like a strange comparison but the game plays out like a board game in a lot of ways and more than a couple of its elements remind me of that game in particular.
The space battles are a lot of fun to play around with and learn how they work. If you really wanna know what you could be doing better you can watch how the battle plays out manually and see shifts in the fight you wouldn't be able to by just auto-resolving the combat. This allows you to make adjustments to your fleet, optimizing their performance and value. I love this about the game. You are able to overcome most enemies, even much stronger ones, if you work to counter them.
Going along with that, a highly functional and fun to use diplomacy system for once in my life. I can easily say this is the best diplomacy game of any game with a diplomatic element in it I have ever played, and I have played a lot of them. It's so satisfying managing conflicts and treaties I often find myself getting wrapped up in it even when playing a faction that isn't weighted in that area. I am able to pull off perfectly timed alliances or ceasefires with decent consistency in max difficulty, max player, max map size setting games. And it never feels like I'm accomplishing any of that unfairly. Almost every deal I make I'm having to give up something I probably rather wouldn't and it's making your adversaries that much stronger. You really have to be careful not to over trade to them as they can easily then outpace you.
Every faction feels unique and inspires different ways of playing. I also never feel forced to play in a certain way, there are so many paths to victory even on max difficulty games. The game has it's problems of course as well, but for a sale price of $2.50 or full price $10, this game will more than get you your moneys worth.

Not sure what to say - it's just a decent 4X. I couldn't get into Endless Legend because the mechanics were really unfamiliar, but this game is what I expect for a game about dominating planets in space.

Yes, it has a nice graphic and a good enough UI, but I find the game mechanics super strange. The technology tree is not very clear and the bonuses and new constructions it gives are not well explained.
The mechanism for the empire loyalty is what? If you colonize hard planets your colonists are unhappy?
There are hundreds of these mechanics that are hidden.
Most of all, it is the ship building and the fighting that is really frustrating. It requires a lot of experience to build a good ship, and even if you have higher technology than your enemy, if you don't equip your ship with the right combination of weapons and equipment you will lose. No matter if your ship is a dreadnought and the enemy is a cruise. Not the right weapons? You are dead. Wanna know which ones are the right weapons? Well, I could not find a way to discover it.
The best 4X games were already done and ENDLESS is NOT one of them.

After sinking well over 40 hours into Endless Space, I can say it's a genuinely satisfying 4X experience once you get past the initial learning curve — the faction variety alone kept me coming back, especially my time with the Horatio clones, which is as wonderfully absurd as it sounds. The music and atmosphere are top-notch, and the tech tree offers that classic 'one more turn' pull that good strategy games live or die by. That said, the combat system is essentially a glorified cutscene where you play rock-paper-scissors with battle cards and hope for the best, which gets old fast — I started skipping battles almost immediately. The AI diplomacy is baffling: factions will offer you peace one turn and declare war five turns later for no apparent reason, and the late game drags as you endlessly click through turns waiting for fleets to crawl across the map. It's a dated game that shows its age, but for the price — especially since it's apparently free on the developer's website — it's worth experiencing if you have any love for classic space 4X.

I wanted to like this game. It's just the little things.
The default factions are not very well balanced.
The Tech Tree takes too long to learn to utilze properly.
Even those used to TBS games should be playing their first games on easy difficulty instead of Normal.
Designing your own ships is hard to figure out the best mixes.
Heroes become polarised very early in their development and you don't get even close to as many as you would like.
Space battles are also tough to figure out how best to utilize the different strategies.
I am sure there are plenty of fantastic guides out on the internet for all of these, but it's just too many things to need to go to an external source for just to enjoy the game.
I recommend Galactic Civilizations II as a far superior product, and Galactic Civilizations III (Beta out now) should be even better still.

What an awesome game.
ES is a good game, that falls short of being great. The Good; Planets and Starships look awesome. Truelly differnt races. random maps and galaxy types. The Bad; The user interface for planet upgrades are bland (should be differnt colors for differnt upgrades). The reaserch tree has the same problems all the same colors for each tree (again to bland) The combat is interesting at first, but after awhile the lack of options gets a bit dull) If you like 4X and can pick it up on sale (I did) this game will be a good value. Don't just get the basic though spend a few more bucks and get the Disharmony add on

For me, this is the best 4X strategy title out there. No matter what your play style is, you will find your niche. It's challenging and fun. It forces you to learn and adapt. Combat is automated, but done in a cool, cinematic way. Highly recommended.

Guter Soundtrack, Grafisch ansprechend, Benutzeroberfläche komfortabel aber nicht immer selbsterklärend.
Dazu hatte man die Möglichkeit als Spieler an der Entwicklung und Weiterentwicklung über Games2gether Einfluss zu haben. Hierdrüber bin ich erst an das großartige Dungeon of the Endless gekommen welches den Bogen spannt von Endless Space zu Endless Legacy.

Ich befinde mich wie viele andere auch auf einer schier endlosen Odysee auf der Suche nach einem würdigen Nachfolger für das alte Master of Orion 2. Leider fand ich bisher kein adequates und das bleit leider auch so. Allerdings muss ich sagen, dass Endless Space neben GalCivII die beiden Spiele waren die man guten Gewissens spielen konnte. Trotz etwas biederer Präsentation kann ich Endless Space empfehlen. Kein MoO2 aber dennoch gut und seinen Preis wert!

Civ 5 in space is the simplest way to describe Endless Space - and even if it was just that, it would still be awesome. If one is to play it, however, they'll realise that Endless Space is a unique 4X unto itself.
Pick from a list of unique alien races with amazing artwork and distinctive art styles and then expand your empire accross the stars. Engage with AI or real player civilizations for diplomatic or military dominance or isolate yourself with galactic barricades.
There are plenty of different strategies and tactics which makes every game completely unique. A must play for fans of 4X or Science fiction.

-Diplomacy victory impossible
-Smart decisions/solid strategies are penalized; expansion lowers happiness, lowering all outputs; non-expansion lowers happiness, lowering outputs
-All ships of the same hull design look the same despite extensive customization and tweaking
-Stock species are NOT balanced against each other, at all
-Your people's happiness is the one thing you need to worry about most rather than actual resources, and the conditions for happiness are absurd (expanding;staying on one system both generate unhappiness)

A deep 4X game with a lot of addictive features. Recommended for everyone who is fan of the 4X genre!
Probably one of my favourite turn based games of all time. Extremely intuitive UI helps navigate some of the deep gameplay mechanics. Designing your own ships and fleets while mantaining a simple combat structure makes the learning curb a lot less painfull. Visually appealing, the ability to customize factions by putting your own trait preferences together, in addition to the lore make this game a very satisfying one.
As with all 4x games, the turns may take quite some time. This however hasn't stopped me and a few friends from making this a game of choice since it allows us to step back when we need to as things come up. If you dislike the pacing of 4x games avoid this. But if you do enjoy the genre, you can't go wrong with Endless Space.
If you are someone who is new to this genre, this game has a steep learning curve even in the easiest of the easies of AI. Still, after a full game of it, you are sure to pick it up just nicely to upgrade yourself to the hardest of difficulty. The Strategy in this game is surprisingly deep.
Although you cannot control your ships directly in combat, it still looks awesome in the battle phase of the game. <3
Many people compare this game with the classic space 4x game, Master of Orion 2. As one who sunk many hours into that game, I can see where thay are comming from; this game containes (and in some cases improves) many of the features that I loved, but still keeps a few that I hated.
Heres the things I like about it:
Heroes are much more Dynamic in their leveling, with their own skill trees and abilities.
The races are more diverse while still containing the same point buy system from its predessors.
The planetary anomolies, giving bonusses and penalties to planets throughout the galaxy.
Some things I hate about it:
While the card system is an interesting idea, it still dosen't change the fact that combat is either an automatic uninteresting button click, or a painfully long cinimatic experience. Though to be fair it is an improvement to MoO2.
Late game fleet managment is a nightmare of navigating through menus and figuring out who is where and who still has a turn.
The AI (both Player and Improvement) is terrable. The Improvement AI will constantly Build military building that aren't nessasary and eat up your dust (money).
final thoughts: If you like MoO2 or Alpha Centauri and want another game like that than you have to look no further. If you were expecting something else, then it's best to keep moving.

Absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ruined with this "Emperor Edition". Planets are now instantly conquered regardless of how much defence you have built on a system. The racial abilities have all been butchered to death and all have the same bonuses for EVERY ship of that race, making it pointless to use anything by the largest ships. Awful. Shame on you Amplitude Studios. The mark of a good developer is knowing when to leave well alone...
A great game that has been BROKEN and will never be the same again.
The learning curve may be a little steep for players who aren't used to 4x games, but holy smokes is it worth pushing through the curve. As a science and space nerd, this game hits all the right notes. The research system is interesting, and presents a whole other level of strategy. The races are well crafted, the lore is engrossing and interesting, and the visuals are gorgeous. The cinematic battles are a nice treat, and it's exciting watching the battles play out. Any fans of Civilization or 4x games should give this a look.

Very good game, lots of possibilities and lots of replay options. Takes a while to learn how to play each Race effectively as they are quite different from each other.
Easy to dip in and out of for short periods of play but will also keep you hooked for hours progressing your empire.

4X spacial assez réussi avec une interface à la fois sobre et classe. On reprochera les combats qui sont réduit simplement à un jeu de carte au hasard. Aucun contrôle n'est possible pendant la phase de bataille.
j'aime les jeux spatiaux "4X", j'ai adoré master of orion II, apprécié galactic civilizations et quelques autres et enhardi par les critiques positives, j'ai acheté ce jeu. Las ! l'interface froide et austère, l'absence de personnalité et de scénarisation, le système de combat qui semble un peu minable (un jeu de cartes qui fait penser au chifoumi) ne m'ont juste pas donné la moindre envie de presser le bouton "fin de tour" encore et encore comme avec d'autres jeux. Cela peut sembler difficile à expliquer, mais ce jeu n'a pas le charme, la magie qui fait que l'on a envie de le découvrir et de le maîtriser. désinstallé au bout d'une heure de jeu, peut être suis je passé à coté, mais il y a tellement d'autres jeux...
Chronophage et musique au top! un peu repetitif à la longue par contre. systeme de skill tree touffu mais pourtant obligé de tout developper pour avancer, pas possible de se specialiser réellement.

Really good space 4x, simple to learn, with lots of depth.
A great 4x game and one of my favorites to date. You cannot go wrong with this game especially if you have a friend that has similar interests you can play games with vs the AI. My only complaint at this point is that the game is finished being developed and there seems to be no more DLC coming for it. I have over 70 hours in the game though so I cannot complain!

Es complicado decir si recomiendo este juego o no, a un jugador casual le disgustará lo complejo y desagradecido que puede llegar a ser aprender a jugar. Sin embargo, si te gusta el género y estas dispuesto a perseverar encontrarás que el título es muy completo y fascinante en algunos aspectos. En general, se trata de un juego con un inmenso potencial.
En el lado negativo: la parte estética está desaprovechada, la interfaz es sosa y la belleza plástica de las razas no está bien explotada. Además, el juego está sin traducir al español, tan solo disponemos de las aportaciones de los miembros de la comunidad que de vez en cuando cuelgan una traducción incompleta.
En resumen: recomiendo comprarlo, pero a ser posible cuando esté de oferta.
не рекоминдую это игру тем кто любит управлять боем своей космической ормады, тут это представленно ввиде роликаи распределено на три фазы боя дальня средняя и ближняя, космические коробл выглядят практически однообразно но в пределах одной рассы тоесть играете за людей ваш тяжелый крейсер будет похож на легкий разница только в размере и его переносимом весе ну и некоторых бонусах,
ну а теперь плюсы это много разных рас и у каждой из них свои плюсы и минусы, тоесть стратегия игры для каждой рассы своя, немного напоминает цивилизацию
I really want to love this game. The setting and races are imaginative, but the AI is always five steps ahead of you no matter what and in a game about numbers (fleets, planets, or resources) it just feels impossible to get anywhere.

Reading the other positive reviews, I don't understand how people are recommending this game. They list out all of the same flaws I found but they're still recommending the game...? I guess 4X just isn't what it used to be, but I found this game to be terrible. The UI wasn't friendly at all - information was in completely different places on different screens, and doing simple tasks was often confusing. I had to do a google search to figure out how to upgrade my existing ships.
The combat was boring and gave very little feedback as to what happened or why. The default view of combat jumps around like a speed freak, and although you can turn it off you'll be back to the same view next time. There was a description of how much damage you did but in mixed fleets that wasn't enough to tell you what happened. I finally gave up when a hero-led fleet was repairing faster than I could damage the ships. The hero character was completely unbalancing.
Parts of the game had potential which is what made the things that didn't work so much more frustrating. For the first ten turns I thought I finally had something that was an update of the old 4X classics.

Endless Space is a very addictive game.Its visually detailed and opulent where it needs to be and simple and clean everywhere else.It has a terrific interface which affoards a pace and ease of management that few other games in this exact genre can match.I'm not gonna write anymore i have so many galaxies that r waitin for me to conqour them! If ur a fan of this genre i'd deffinetly reccomend this endless space gets a thumbs up from me!
Do you like 4x strategy games ? If so, Endless space is for you. Developed WITH the community through Games 2 Gether, Endless Space will take you to the galaxy of the endless to wrestle power from the other races that would rule over you with an iron fist. Conquer the galaxy with superior firepower, diplomancy, or other darker back channel methods with the help of the varried and massive tech/research tree. Endless Space is at it's core a deep 4x game that will tax your mind and fray your nerves, between pirates, monsters, and enemy fleets you will have more than enough to do before each click of the end turn button. Colony management is the base of the game, but the micromanagement has been kept to a minimum although players will be required to read about the various types of installations they have option to build, as some may be helpful and others not depending on your race, or custom racial options. The only downfall Endless Space has is the lack tactical combat, as an old MOO2 fan that was a bit disappointing, but is easy enough to overlook. All in all I would have to give Endless Space an 8/10, it's no MOO2 but it's close.

Changed from a no to a yes based on significant price drops, it's fun if you like pretty space strategies.
The game's a basic 4x strategy game, its very pretty and has some nice soundtracks, the combats even more basic with linear upgrades for ships and a simple counter system but at least you get a pretty cinematic in the background.
Its quite buggy and playing online is almost impossible due to a myriad of bugs ESPECIALLY when using a large map.
If you see it going for cheap on sale I do recommend it if you like turned based 4x games.
Also if you can't stand seeing things that make absolutely no sense brace yourself if you do buy it because you may happen to see a giant tree sticking out of a gas giant at some point.
I am forced to not recommend it though due to the fact it hasn't got much substance beyond the pretty paint job, especially with regards to the derp AI and broken as all hell balance.

I've been learning this 4x game by exploration, which is oddly appropriate considering exploration is a good part of the game. It has been living in a window on my other monitor, which is one of those pleasant advantages of a turn based game, so I haven't really played as many hours as it will say I have -- but it's been a constant companion for days. I work on things on the "tomato" rule -- do something, take a break -- and this has been my "take a break."
The devs have managed to infused a good feeling of RPG into the factions and context of the game. It's polished like an apple, the art style is gorgeous, the music is...well, it reminded me of Eve and I turned it off after a bit. But the skill trees are deep and interesting, the strategy is pleasantly no-one-solution, the achievements are -- many of them -- gigglesome and some might really appeal to the obsessive.
Much more elegant than Sid Meier's stuff. It appeals to the anthropologist (xenologist?), engineer, and storyteller in me as well as the game geek/dev/closet space grognard.
I find myself interested in trying to win the game as different factions having played against random different factions as AI in 2 player games. I find myself doing dishes and modelling how larger games with more factions would work out, after a few days of playing. What better recommendation for a game than that it amuses me away from the keyboard, as well as at the keyboard?

A near successor to Master of Orion 2, Endless Space is a very solid entry in epic space strategy. Fully customizable factions and galaxy maps give it great apeal and replayability.

Bought this game as an afterthought during the Steam Summer Sale, and basically haven't been able to turn the darned thing off. Just...one...more...turn!
This is an empire builder, but it isn't Civ. Some thinking and forethought are needed to succeed. I had a hard time finding documentation to help me along at first, but the Steam community has published some nice, solid guides that showed me what I was doing wrong. When I took their advice (hint: pay attention to approval/disapproval!), the game was opened up for me in an entirely new way.
Battle sequences are a roll of the dice, as opposed to having RTS elements. You can build, modify and upgrade your fleets, but other than choosing tactics during battle, you can't target individual ships. This was different than I expected, but fits within the overall theme.
Expansionsts will find this frustrating if they don't pay close attention...you pay an approval penalty for overexpansion. Basically, this is the anti-Civilization. There are ways around that though, I'll let you figure it out so as not to spoil anything.
If you like building empires in a turn-based setting, this is a very easy game to get hooked on.

Definately recommend! If you like turn based strategy games of course. It took me about 24 hours to understand how the hell the game works and I'm still learning. Even though it takes a lot of energy and time to figure it all out (since there is a lot that comes to it), playing this game makes time fly (as every game should). Sadly the battles are merely automatic or cinematic (both prettymuch automatic) but you can choose the tactic you use. The cinematics on the other hand are worth watching, good graphics and they give you a nice break during the game.
Really fun game, can be a bit unforgiving at times but all an all a very good 4X game. I haven't had any complaints.
Had a blast laying waste to the universe... next time I'll go for a bigger map.

Terrible Game, don't buy. I am not sure how you're suppose to play when an invasion fleet is 30+ units of 15 ships each. Am I really suppose to click through all that- and really suppose to not see that coming? Kinda a big bug in the game if after 5 hours it is now unplayable. I don't care if it is unwinable- I just want playable. Terribly unbalanced, or at least unmanaged. If you want money for a game, you should do better.
Imagine Sid Meyer's Civ mixed with Twilight Imperium. Just as engaging, but has a very interesting system of designing your own ships which makes for a dynamic arms race as the AI counters your designs. Fun stuff.

First you get rekt by your own population. Then you get rekt by your alien neighbours. After that you get rekt by basic economics, and then, when you finally think you understand the game.... You get rekt by bloody space pirates.
I really liked this game, to be honest I died playing against the computer at least 20 times before looking online for tips. Once I understood the food/science focus of the game I found it quite easy. Very fun to play with my brothers on LAN.
The game can be played many different ways, try to build super battle ships and wipe out the other races or build up a massive trade network and buy your way to winning. It is completely up to you.
It's great fun but when playing for 5-6hours to be defeated in 10 minutes can really annoy you.

A decent space conquest and empire development game. I would have liked a deeper ship customization feature like is found in other games. UI has a very slight "bubbly" or "Cartoony" feel to it. Combat is underwhelming and the choice of tactics somewhat resembles a collectible card game.
For a game called Endless Space, the explorable universe seemed pretty small.
If you can get it on sale for $2 or so, that's probably worth the entertainment value. I don't see any long-term prospects for this game in my library.
I enjoyed it at first and got sucked in pretty good, but this game has almost no replay value. Two games at most and you'll be tired of it. Some great ideas for interplanetary mechanics but ultimately I expect Beyond Earth to blow it out of the water.

I have attempted several times to replay this game hoping for the best as it was originally hailed as parallel to the fabled, "Masters of Orion" series but after pre ordering and recieving a half finished program replete with bug after bug into the realm of inplayability, I gave up. Subsequent attempts at replay after following the updates have yielded an unbalanced concoction of simplistic drawing schemes and a half attempt at a technology tree that the computer always outpaces you at.
the combat system is completely unteresting using "playing cards" which you unlock more options through research. Prior to the start of a "battle" you can chose 3 cards, 1 for long, middle, and melee range hoping that your card cancels out theirs or at least brings that phase of the battle to a draw. The battles waste several minutes watching terrible camera angles fire pew pew style at a distance in the hopes that you might see an explosion. You can chose to auto battle but it seems these are destined to lose more often than not forcing you to waste your time in the "theater mode battle." Bare in mind you have zero control once the battle has started and the only contribution you gave was the selection of cards at the beginning of the battle in hopes that the odds may be ever in your favor.
1/10 and a waste of hard earned money on a half finished concept with little player involvement.

Endless space est, et de loin, le meilleur 4x (exploration, expansion, exploitation et extermination) auquel j'ai pu m'adonner.
Le principe est simple : des systèmes solaires reliés entre eux par des voies classiques ou des trous de vers, systèmes composés de planète (taille, type, anomalie, ressource stratégique et ressources luxueuses).
Votre race part de son système natal et doit suivre les règles 4x.
Les vaisseaux sont entièrement personnalisables par "slots", l'arbre technologique est gigantesque, les graphismes plutôt beaux, la diplomatie complète (bien que moindre qu'un CIV)...
Bref pour ma part il ne lui reste qu'un mode de missions interactives et une influence plus grande sur les combats pour être parfait.
Tout joueur de 4x ou passioné d'espace, de conquête et de forte rejouabilité se doit d'avoir ce petit bijou. Je l'ai offert à mes meilleurs amis, et ils sont vite devenus accros =)
Les points forts:
- 4x simple a maitriser
- Le gameplay varie selon la civilisation jouée
- Custom de civilisation (clair et bien pensé)
- Graphismes simples mais agréables
- Interface intuitif et bien complet
- Longue durée de vie
Les points faibles:
- IA faible (sauf cravers et pilgrims en endless qui restent corrects en early)
- L'aspect diplomatique laisse a désirer avec les BOTs (la victoire diplomatique reste aussi très floue)
- Votre emplacement de départ peut parfois vous gacher vos premiers tours
- Manque d'informations sur certains points (exemple: les portées d'armes)
Dans l'ensemble un très bon jeu.
Je lui met un 8/10.

Highly customizable, great graphics, amazing gameplay, interesting tech tree.
Send your giant fleets around the galaxy beating stuff up in cool 3d space battles. Lotsa ship types too.
My only criticism is that there's basically no modding (Star Wars would be awesome).
Highly enjoyale Turn based startegy game especially with friends trough multiplayer.
Game contains several races which are good balanced , more types of victor(military,political, when u colonize 3/4 of galaxy and so on. From the beggining its kinda boring because u have nothing to build but after few turns its getting better and better, u can design your own ships and so on, lots of fun

Fun 4X game. Large maps with a lot of players causes unbearable lag though.
hub and UI are clumsy and hard to use and tutorial is basic to the point of uselessness.

If you like 4x games then this one is a solid game, although lacking in character. There are a number of alien races, though most are just different human factions. They each have rich details backstories, and the game continues to give you more snippets of a larger story as it plays out. Combat is atypical, being more of a dice-roll and technology competition than any actual strategy. You design your ships (each race has a series of different ship platforms that range in size and function, but they all look basically the same, which was a disappointment), and then choose 3 "cards". The cards give you bonuses, and can cancel out your opponents 3 cards if you're lucky, and you can get access to new cards through unlocking technologies. The tech tree is massive and interesting, with detaild lore-filled descriptions of each technology. The game is fun overall, but after a while becomes very bland. Most factions feel very similar to eachother, and with the way invasion and system-capture works, wars can become extremely drawn out affairs. The computer AIs are easily exploited via the diplomacy screen by offering trades that require large ammounts of gold per turn from them in exchange for resoruces or luxuries. They will accept the deal (with a few one-time payments of dust, technology, or whatever else you want), and cancel it the next turn when they can't afford the price, giving you any one-time payments they agreed to for free. The other issue the game suffers from is a lack of clarity. I still haven't figured out what food does, and why I should bother getting more than the bare minimum on my planets, but the technology tree is littered with farming improvements. Compared to games like Masters of Orion II, or Space Empires IV, ES is very pretty and interesting, but a little too much like a spreadsheet rather than a game. If you like 4x you'll enjoy it for a while, but don't spend more than 5 bucks on this one.

Eines der besten Spiele zurzeit und das einzige ordentliche Weltraumstrategiepsiel zurzeit.
Das Addon brachte vernünftige neuerungen und neue Rassen. Höchstens die Weltraumgefechte, bei denen man leider nur mäßig eingreifen kann werden nach einer Weile langweilig.
Ich kann das Spiel sehr empfehlen. Nur leider habe ich seit ein paar Tagen eine Fehlermeldung "EndlessSpace.exe funktinoiert nicht mehr" Trotz neu Installation funktioniert das Spiel nach wie vor nicht mehr. :(
Was told about this game a few weeks back, since then played half a dozen small games. Like it a lot, the tech tree is expansive and easy to understand. Ship building could be better, I would have liked a more visual approach to it. But all in all so far I am enjoying what the game has to offer.

A "true" 4x sci-fi strategy title with a big focus on empire building providing all the tools to sink massive amounts of time into micro-managing and min-maxing of your systems.
The start can be pretty hash on newcomers, the tutorial is rudimentary at best, there is no introducing single-player campaign like in other titles. Your best bet is to take your time and read the tooltips carefully. Almost EVERYTHING in the game has a tooltip of its own providing basic information and stats you can call on. If somethings unclear dont hesitate to try out stuff. Usually stuff "clicks" after a few turns.
The Ai follows the same rules as the human player but will receive bonuses to all kind of things depending on the difficulty level you select. Thats why I always suggest "newbie" or "easy" difficulty....no matter if you are a 4x veteran or not, those are the best difficulties to learn the ropes of the game.
Make sure to check out map and advanced settings to create matches of your liking
Your biggest priority at first will most likely be warfare. Be advised that Endless Space supports all kinds of different playstyles which can lead to victory. Pure defensive empires focusing on research and trade, warmongers crushing everything in their paths, scientists dominating the technological aspect, empire focus races growing like cancer (sorry for the pun) etc etc. I tried out so many different combinations already and I STILL find new ones I can enjoy and which challenge me in a different way.
You will always play maps versus 1-7 opponents and while the goal is always the same (dominate your oppponents and "win" the match) HOW you can achieve this varies drastically. Thats the replay factor which enabled me to pump so many hours into this game.
Very polished UI and some of the best visuals for the genre make it stand out for me. The combat cinematics especially are able to entrance me. Immersion factor for me.....skyhigh.
There are so many factors in the game (planets, anomalies, technologies, diplomatic status and effects, invasions, ship designs, battle card system, traits, heroes etc etc) that it might take a while to find your way but its a very rewarding path. Once you understand and see certain synergies you wont notice how time flies past
In my experience the game runs very stable and the errors popping up can be easily fixed with a reload (which doesnt take long). Multiplayer matches do suffer from desynch errors frequently tho. That being said I consider it a single-player title.
Endless Space might not be "the best" in any ONE department (AI, diplomacy, combat, infrastructure) but the combination/package of all things makes it THE best sci-fi 4x title for me personally.....highly recommended for the low prize.
