ファミコンのリンクの冒険のオマージュ。
クリアまで20時間くらいかかった。
苦行。
アクションよりもパズルに近いのかもしれない。
やたら入れる場所が多いがクリアまでの順路は一通り。
ヒントがほぼ無いし、急に難易度が高かったり、
序盤の移動速度がやたら遅かったりでイライラがつのる。
二段ジャンプ、攻撃回数アップ・移動速度アップとかができるようになるまでがつらすぎる。
詰んだらSpeedRun動画とかで検索して必要アイテム探したほうがいい。
面白いインディーゲームがどんどんリリースされる今、
あえてこれを買う必要はないと思う。
面倒で高難易度なものほど面白いと思う人は、あえてやってみればいいと思う。
行ったり来たりがただただ面倒。

Entiendo que tenga reseñas variadas ya que jugandolo encontré diversos puntos negativos que pueden molestar un poco la experiencia, quizá no sea un juego para todos, sin embargo en mi caso lo disfruté muchísimo, le dedique varias horas y terminé su historia principal, es un juego recomendable especialmente para los amantes de los metroidvania.

Какое-то время игра стала для меня не проходимой, оказывается скорость игры привязана к фпс, если у вас выше 165 кадров, то лучше опустить до 60 фпс.

I suggest that you're going to have to make your own map with detailed notes to complete this- which is all part of the retro charm.

def channels Zelda 2 vibes, but the map system in the game in borderline useless, shortcuts often don't work both ways but then some do with no understanding of why.

This is a very average Metroidvania. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t bring anything significant to the table either. Combat is a little clunky (your only weapon is a bow), and it’s both extremely linear and extremely poor at telegraphing where you’re supposed to go next. I spent a lot of time wandering aimlessly, not helped by the game using an overworld map to connect a bunch of tiny locations instead of a single interconnected map you can check any time like in Castlevania and Metroid.

Elliot Quest is another game that may appeal to a select few. It is not bad, but it is rough and lacking in some conveniences in favour of being.. authentically old fashioned. There is joy in the exploration and uncovering more areas, but in other regards many secrets are just more coins, and can come with a lot of backtracking with no fast travel to ease the process.

As an extra note, respawning on half health is.. cruel. Especially as the checkpoints work as a respawn rather than a save state. If you want to go into a boss fight on full health or with your potions, you need to do so first try. Making learning some boss fights a particular nuisance. Especially later ones that might just insta-kill you as you walk in, or do enough damage to two shot you in general.

Again, I can appreciate a lot of what is presented, but perhaps.. a little more leeway or information to the player sometimes. Less 'get gud'

A bit more Zelda 2 than Metroidvania. There's lots to explore, but the maps could be more helpful. Often find myself lost and irritated by that. You gain exp and level up, which rewards a skillpoint. In this metroidvania, i enjoy putting in the skillpoints as they feel genuinly impactful. Elliot Quest is a pretty raw indie game that gives you a lot to do (Akin to Treasure Adventure Game).

It's a fun little title, but just know what you're getting into beforehand. It's a retro-inspired 2d action/adventure, very much in the style of Zelda 2. The game gives you VERY little guidance, leaving it up to the player to figure out what spells and items do, and where to go next. Taking notes is HIGHLY recommended. If that type of experience is something you enjoy, there's a lot of fun to be had with Elliot Quest.

Something worth mentioning is that there are a few odd bugs here and there, along with a few missable/inaccessible magic upgrades. Minor spoilers below.

Specifically, one magic upgrade is inaccessible due to the fairy statue bug. You need to use the statue to hold down a button, but the statue needs to cross a bunch spikes to reach said button. The spikes kill the statue for some reason, making the upgrade inaccessible.

Another missable magic upgrade is in the cave with the ice wall that chases you. If you outrun the wall and then unlock the shortcut back to the entrance without collecting the upgrade, you become locked out of that upgrade due to the shortcut door sealing off the entrance.

Neither of these are huge issues, as there are plenty of other magic upgrades to find, but it's something to keep in mind.

This must be the most criminally underrated indie game of all time.
I keep asking myself how comes this has not received the recognition it deserves.
It's a very long and well crafted metroidvania.
It's not perfect, but no game is.
Maybe the problem is it starts slowly. But it gets much better on the long run.
I played for the first time in 2014 and I'm replaying it now in 2022 and I'm enjoying it.

This game might just be the most criminally underrated Indie game of all time. It makes Zelda 2 fun for people who hated Zelda 2. It's got beautiful game design, and it's one of if not the best Zelda inspired games out there. Even in the modern day of Death's Door and Tunic this game absolutely holds up as one of the adventure greats. Buy it.

This Metroidvaniesque tribute to the 16-bit era, and to [i]Zelda 2[/i] in particular has a massive amount of content. With 8 hours of playtime in, I have barely scratched the surface.
Part of that lengthy playtime comes, however, from EQ faithfully recreating some of the more questionable aspects of the era it honours... aspects like lack of handholding or explanations and a jagged and erratic difficulty curve. If you're not using a guide or a walkthrough, expect to spend a [b]lot[/b] of time wandering around wondering where you can go next. I recommend taking notes on what obstacles you have found in the various dungeons, so that you know which to revisit once you have gained a new upgrade.
If you're not playing EQ expressly for the retro-gaming aspect, however, stay away. The emulation is not just graphical, and you'll need some persistence to get through.

BEFORE BUYING: make sure you have a way to set your computer's monitor to a fixed 60 Hz (With Windows 10, right-click your desktop, select "Display Settings", find and click "Advanced Display Settings", then scroll down to refresh rate and make sure one of the options is 60 Hz) You will need to play the game on this setting, or it will be nearly unplayable: when set at 144 Hz for example, the entire game runs at at 2.4x normal speed, and floating enemies will be affected by gravity strangely, causing some areas to become inaccessible.

As for the game itself, it is fine most of the time, but with enough annoyances that I can't really recommend it. It has a lot of secrets to discover and challenging but not unfair combat.

However, it has multiple areas in which you can softlock yourself (usually because you run out of bombs or mana in the wrong spots, so try to get the "mp regen" perk if you can).

Additionally, while the save points are found all over and the penalty for dying is minimal, the save points are not as useful as you'd think: they only refill your health and mana to half of max (min of 3 hearts), and do nothing for your bomb count or consumable items. This means that even though there's a save point right before each boss, you only really get one full-strength attempt at any boss unless you want to spend 5 min backtracking to town between each attempt. Worse than that, in the case, say, you're fighting a certain boss that requires bombs to beat and you run out of bombs in one of your attempts, you might need to backtrack across the continent to the starting town so you can buy bombs back up to max again.

It could have been a good game, but man, between the bugs, softlocks, and annoyances, I can't really recommend it.

I loved this game, and spent a lot of time with it. But in the very end I was disappointed - first, I achieved the max level even before the latest temple, and going through the latest temple was super easy, easier then the first or second temple, but then I tried to fight the boss on the graveyard and couldn't, and tried to go to the Satar's liar and again it was super hard. So I dropped the game, as I had the max level and the best weapons possible, and still it was too hard.

My game runs at mach 10. Seems to use your monitor refresh rate for how fast the game runs... Controls are pretty jank. Almost nothing is explained. I didn't know what the chain meter did until I just noticed it mentioned in the store page's description when I went to review this... Whenever there is chat text, you can't skip it, you have to wait for some arbitrary time limit put on it before it goes away on it's own. Cutscenes are unbearably slow. The character brushes sand off him for like 10 seconds straight during 1 cutscene... Chests only contain money. Every chest...

Buen arcade de plataformas 2d con acertijos, powerups, evolución del personje, busqueda de llaves y jefes finales. Es muy entretenido y simple, tanto gráficamente, como sonido y jugabilidad. Tiene un justo sisteama de checkpoints y te permite guardar el último por si querés salir de la partida para regresar luego. De esos juegos para pasarse un domingo por la tarde o cuando estás enfermo en la cama. :)

A very fun adventure game in the vein of Zelda 2, Elliot Quest has great music, an engaging story and fun characters to get to know over the course of your time in the world. Don't expect much in the way of hand holding or even basic hints... you will find items and have no clue what they do (the community is still not 100% sure what every items does, although they do have most of it figured out). Things you do in game have consequences, for better or for worse, and multiple endings will have you coming back to see how it all ends up. I only wish the soundtrack was for sale on Steam, since I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Elliot Quest sera resté très longtemps dans ma bibliothèque Steam avant d'avoir pu en voir la fin, et après l'avoir entamé tout de même pour la troisième fois :p. Prenez Zelda II, remplacer Link par Pit de Kid Icarus, et remettez encore une grosse couche supplémentaire de Metroid, et hop, vous aurez un beau jeu d'aventure d'aventure doublé d'un bel hommage aux jeux pré-cités.

Je suis honnêtement assez étonné de voir que le jeu est si peu connu, et même s'il n'est pas parfait, je recommande chaudement de s'y essayer pour ceux qui aiment le genre.

Graphiquement, le pixel-art est vraiment cool et propose de très beaux environnements et de jolis chara-design, excepté les boss qui sont malheureusement très quelconque. Les animations sont propres, les musiques sont entrainantes sans être chiantes (ce qui important étant donné le nombre d'aller-retours à faire), et il y a quelques effets de styles inspirés.

Niveau gameplay, vous utilisez donc un arc, que vous pourrez améliorer, et vous trouverez rapidement différentes magies élémentaires obligatoires pour progresser dans les niveaux et résoudre des énigmes, plus quelques objets qui vous faciliteront la vie, comme par exemple un bouclier. Chaque ennemi tué rapport de l'expérience qui servira à débloquer des compétences (vitesse de tir, portée, consommation de magie, etc...). Le truc, c'est qu'en cas de mort, vous perdez une partie non négligeable de l'expérience accumulée. Et contrairement à un Dark Souls, celle-ci n'est pas récupérable sur l'emplacement de votre mort :p. Cela rend la mort bien trop punitive, surtout à la fin du jeu où accumuler de l'expérience est très long. C'est certainement ce qui en découragera plus d'un, d'autant que le jeu devient relativement difficile passée la moitié de l'histoire.

Finalement, tout va se jouer sur la progression du joueur. Le jeu offre un vaste terrain de jeu, et comme dans Zelda II, il faut trouver sur la carte les différents lieux, certains étant évident (les villes, les temples...), d'autres non (au cœur d'une forêt, sur la plage...). Les lieux à visiter sont indiqués quand on passe dessus avec un "!", mais certains sont franchement difficile à trouver et tiennent sur un pixel. C'est en fouillant la carte de fond en comble que l'on trouvera de quoi se faciliter la vie, que ce soit de la vie supplémentaire, des réserves de magie ou juste des objets de quêtes pour avancer. Le sentiment d'exploration est plutôt agréable, mais on aurait pas craché sur un système de déplacement rapide ou de téléportation, car aller d'un bout à l'autre de la carte est parfois très fastidieux. Or, il vous faudra constamment retourner dans certains lieux avec de nouvelles capacités pour trouver des secrets. Sans ça, il y a quatre donjons obligatoires, plus le donjon final, donc en ligne le droite le jeu est assez court (comptez peut-être une dizaine d'heures). Mais les secrets et donjons bonus sont nombreux, notamment des boss cachés très retors, ce qui augmente pas mal la durée de vie du jeu. Il y a de plus trois fins différentes, selon que vous ayez commis des bonnes ou des mauvaises actions.

Bref, Elliot Quest ne souffre selon moi que son système de mort hyper punitif, qui peut induire des pics de difficulté rebutant, et du léger manque d'intérêt pour la quête principale du héros. Par contre, la prise en main est immédiate et le sentiment de progression par l'exploration est très appréciable. Clairement à découvrir.

This game could be considered a basic metroidvania with similarities to Adventures of Link, both the good and bad.

The game is solid mechanics-wise, but lacks several quality of life factors including item/powerup descriptions, which is a shame because if the game maps, descriptions, and respawning were tweaked, this would be a great game. The aspects that teach powers are incomplete for some of them and you'll likely need a guide due to not knowing where to go next.

Hermoso juego, no le encontré, luego de jugarlo mucho, ningún bug. Los gráficos son excelentes, la música también, y la historia también. Es exactamente lo que buscaba desde hace mucho tiempo buscando algo del estilo de Mario Bros pero más moderno y con los movimientos del personaje mucho más suavizados (sin irse al extremo). Súper recomendable este juego, me encantó.

Algo muy bueno es que al terminar todo el juego, podés seguir jugándolo con todas las capacidades y logros adquiridos, lo cual te hace pasar un muy buen rato cuando entrás a jugarlo en otros momentos para pasar el rato.

とにかくいい所が見た目よりも「作り込んでいる」所であり、悪い所も「作り込んでいる所」という非常に微妙なゲーム。

全体的に不満点しかないが、その「作り込んでいる」という良かった点を上げるとすれば・・・
■レベルがあがる育成要素。
■MAPが広く、ステージも多い。
■ギミックも沢山あり、モンスターも考えられていて使い回しが少ない。
■メトロイドヴァニア風。2段ジャンプ等で探索の幅が広がる。
■結構ストーリーは深い。
■カルマがあり良い事したか悪いかでエンディングが変化。
■ファミコン風が好きな人向け。
でしょうか。

ですがそれらが全部マイナス要素にも絡んでいて遊んでいてモヤモヤする部分が多く、どうも面白くない。実は途中で面白くなくてやめてしまい、2年後ぐらいに再開してクリアしました。
初クリアは25時間かかりました。シンプルな見た目なので、とてもそんなにかかるゲームには見えないと思いますが、アイテム探しや不満点も重なりとにかく時間がかかりました。
以下不満点になります。

[h1]マイナス要因[/h1]
■レベルが上がる育成要素。
それはいいのだが、なんでこんな仕様にしたの？って思う。レベルアップするとポイントが1ポイント貰えて、好きな能力を伸ばす事ができるけどもいまいち効果がわかりにくい。
日本語訳にも問題があるが・・・(主人公の武器は弓です) AGI＝命中率と書かれているけども、実はDPSの事であり連射速度が上がるので重要。移動速度も上がるので非常に便利な能力だ。STRを上げたくなるけど、あれは射程なので (ある程度必要だけど) 攻撃力は上がらない。逆に魔法は回復速度なのであまり重要そうではないけども、完全攻略するなら必須レベル。

しかし他に大きな問題があり、実はレベル20までしか上がらないのだ。つまりポイントは20ポイントしかもらえない。半分は能力が伸ばせません。そんなの初見で知るわけがない。初プレイではどんな効果かわからないし、必要ない能力を取ってしまったらもう遅い。

こういうのって予定立てながらプレイしますよね。これはあと回しで先にこの能力を取ろうとか、次は射程を伸ばそう等と思ってたらもうできない。え？このままクリアするの？マジで？と、めっちゃ焦ります。
その結果初クリア時は結構つらかったです。

■親切そうで不親切なチェックポイント
チェックポイントはそこそこあり、ボス前にも必ずあります。死んでしまうと即リスタートでそこまで手に入れたアイテムも無くなりません。ロードしてるのではなく、戻って再プレイという感じです。

ですが、これも不親切なとこが。
死んでしまった場合、体力・魔力が3分の1程からスタートとなります。そこまで厳しくしなくてもいいんじゃないかと思う。
ボス前で死んでしまうと、体力がない状態で挑戦しないといけないのでアクションが苦手な人は辛いと思います。
しかも再スタート時点でセーブされるので、頑張るしかないです。

さらに酷いのが、よく街の人の話を聞いてないと気付かないのですが・・・なんと死んでしまうと今持ってる経験値が一定量なくなります。育成要素があるA・RPGでそれはエグくない？このせいで何度か死ぬと、減り続けて所持経験値がゼロに。そんなのボスの攻略法を探して、何度かリトライしてるうちに無くなりますよ。

レベルを上げるのも辛くなるし、ジリ貧になります。レベルを上げて再挑戦だ！と思ってももう遅い。これを知ってからは、死んだらテンションがホント下がる。

■MAPが広く、ステージも多い。
これはまず全体MAPが最悪なレベルで見にくい。全部が隠しダンジョンみたいな感じ。紹介スクリーンショットに全体MAPの一部があると思いますが、あの映像だけで20ステージあります。とてもそうは見えないでしょう。
1つの森でも入口はいろんな方向にあったり、真ん中で一度外に出て2分割されてたりします。何もなさそうな壁にもステージがあります。一部の映像でこれですから、全体ではとにかく滅茶苦茶多いしどこがステージかわからない。

そしてなんの説明もない。
これだけ大量のステージで、次にどこにいけばいいかわからない。しらみつぶしに全部回って行くしかないです。そして行き止まりなら引き返すしかない。それの繰り返し。

最悪なのが一方通行の道。たとえば頑張ってMAP北側の奥の方のダンジョンまで到達。この先どうなってんだろうと、崖の下に降りたらまさかの序盤ステージだった時は絶望しました。そして戻れないという鬼畜。
「え、まさか・・・ここからまたあのステージ1の森を抜けて、山を越えて、洞窟抜けて、次の森に入って・・・」戻るのにどれだけかかるんだよ・・・と本気でしばらく固まりました。

■メトロイドヴァニア風
今度はステージ内での文句です。どこに行けばいいかわからないので、とにかく端まで行くことになります。たとえ2段ジャンプを手に入れたとしても、安心してはいけない。ダンジョンデザインがひど過ぎる。
とにかくダンジョン内もいける場所、行き止まりが多く、1つアイテムを取ったらまた初めから順番に1ステージづつ回って行かないといけない。

ここ行けるようになったなと、2段ジャンブで越えて進むと・・・その先には「はい、残念。別のアイテムが必要です。」という感じ。そして脱力感とともにステージをまた戻る。その繰り返しです。

昔「RPGツクールで面白いゲームの作り方」という本を読んだ事がありますが、そこに書いてあった「やってはいけない駄目なダンジョン」の典型的な例を見せられてる感じです。

■アイテムの効果
いまいちハッキリとしてない点が多く、説明もないのでどんな効果があるのかわからない場合が多い。一応クリアまでは行けると思いますが、最後まで効果がわからなかったアイテムもあります。
Steamガイド (英語) を書いてくれている人がいたので、その人のおかげでようやくわかりました。

■結構ストーリーは深い。
とは言いましたが、初見プレイではさっぱりわからないと思います。意味不明すぎて面白くないでしょう。それなら次行くべきステージでも教えてくれって思う。
2週やればやっとこういう事か、と少し理解できると思いますが・・・正直この不満だらけのゲームをもう1週プレイする人は、よほどこのゲームを気に入ったか (もちろんそういう人もいるとは思いますが)、実績目的の人だけでしょう。

初見プレイでわかるのは結構重たい話っぽい？ぐらいです。見た目はこんなファミコン風ですが、海外のアドベンチャーゲームなんかでありそうな話。謎が謎っぽく沢山散らばってて、自殺願望や幻覚を見る鬱っぽい主人公や誰かが死んだとか、復讐心だとかの暗～い話。
もうシンプルな見た目通りに「悪い魔王を倒しに行く」の方がマシ。

良い事したのかそれとも悪い事したのかというカルマシステムもありますが、初見ではノーマルエンディングだと思います。考えてプレイしないとまず無理でしょう。実績名がちょっとややこしくて、「バッドエンドに到達せよ」はカルマが普通の人エンディングの事です。

とにかくプレイ中は苦痛だらけです。グローバル実績の最初で5%ってみんなやってないよね・・・。これはうん、わかる。正直辛いと思う。

ただ、不満ばかりを述べましたが初めに言ったように、良い所も「作り込んでいる」っていうとこなんですよね。ファミコン風ですが、敵キャラのバリエーションやギミックは頑張ってると思う。
すべてはバランスとゲームデザインの悪さ。
けどファミコン時代は何の説明もないゲームなんて沢山あったので、そういうゲームをこつこつプレイするのが好きな人はハマるかもしれないです。

Game reminds me of Alex Kidd, Commander Keen, Duke Nukem and Wonder Boy. Games from my childhood past... Zelda too, but I don't want to be one of those people as well... :D
5 Dungeons and 16 bosses in well made platformy maps with hidden passages, treasure chests, level up system, some kind of a map and lots of different type of enemies and behaviour... I think it's a GEM for sure!

This game can't even be bothered to make a good tutorial, radom buttonmashing is the way to learn clearly, except no button seem to make you be able to quit a menu that it forces open.
Can't even rebind keys to find out... This game is ♥♥♥♥, looks like ♥♥♥♥, plays like 90's ♥♥♥♥.

Been a month or two since I wanted to leave a positive review.

This game deserves way more than 72%. After playing trash like The messenger recently which has 95% positive reviews, games like this deserve more. While the combat in this game is...not the greatest, I did enjoy the metroidvania aspect in this game. There are two ways I look at a game for metroidvanias. The metroidvania aspect...as in the degree of how non-linear the game is and how much backtracking is involved, and the fun in doing it/time worth while doing it. Then there's just the platforming side.

Honestly, the game was frustrating at first since it seemed the game was moving way too fast, but I got over it. I don't remember much else to write any more details.

Overall, would recommend to metroidvania fans.

Played this game to completion twice (!) on Switch. It's absolutely great. Really well-designed world, fun combat, and lots of content. Despite being quite generous with the amount of stuff there is to do, you make forward progress at a pleasantly brisk pace. Great! It's very much like a homage to Zelda II -- think "Metroidvania" if that doesn't say anything to you. One of the best in its genre.

The unlockable hard mode is legitimately good. Apart from getting a sweet new outfit, enemy placement is remixed, and it ramps up the challenge accordingly. It makes for a fun rather than tedious challenge.

Hmm, it's fun but player movement is alittle too fast for my liking. I find it's incredibly confusing on where to go next, I've been running around in circles for 3 hours making no progress. Maybe I'm just getting too old for games like this. If you like nintendo style graphics with a mix of Mario and Zelda then give it a try.

This isn't necessarily the sort of game you quit playing. It's the kind you just find yourself setting aside, to explore other corners of your Steam library, until you barely remember owning it.

Elliot Quest isn't a disaster, but the homogeneous backgrounds and lack of directional cues make it easy to lose track of where you are supposed to go. The clumsy combat and absence of intellectual challenge, in turn, ensures that getting back on track or starting over is inadequately rewarding to make it worth bothering.

If you are looking for a cheap and mildly amusing time walking sideways, killing stuff, and occasionally hopping on to or off of something, Cally's Caves provides a better (albeit still underwhelming) experience.

I played through the game all the way back when it came out on OUYA and loved it, so I got it on Steam, too.

It's very satisfying to explore the world of the game, finding abilities and building your character Metroidvania/Zelda-II style. The platforming feels solid, the pixel art is attractive, the world is interesting and varied, and the music is strong, melodic, and sets the atmosphere well. I found myself pretty consistently wanting to come back and play more - which can't be said for a lot of recent indie games I've played.

There are two common complaints I've heard about the game - one is that the game doesn't give you any information about your goals or even what various inventory items do, as though you need to consult a manual that isn't provided. This is a valid concern, but there are FAQs and such you can find to clear up some of this stuff, fortunately, so it's not too bad. I generally appreciate the lack of tutorials and hand-holding that plague modern games, but a LITTLE more info would be nice here and there :P

The second concern is that your character starts off feeling VERY weak. To some extent, this is a natural risk you run when designing a character-building Metroidvania. In order for your new abilities to make you feel strong, you have to start off LESS strong. So Elliot begins the game unable to shoot arrows very far or jump very high. Mileage may vary, but I found that I learned new abilities and gained levels quickly enough to mitigate this - I didn't feel too weak for very long. So I wouldn't let the opening level or two dissuade you on that basis.

This game is horribly underrated and deserves a lot more praise and attention that it gets as this is made what seems to be one person entirely.

With all the nostalgic refrences littered in the game and the design as well as level flow that is very similar to the NES hard 8-bit days, nobody who this developer inteded and made this game for would complain about it's shortcomings (which it's shortcomings are not of a technical or gameplay nature, but more of the opinion of somone who wouldn't appreciate the overall low-fi quality of the game or the ambiguous way the game unfolds); the only people who I can see wouldn't appreciate this understated masterpiece is someone who never actually lived the NES days and played games like Zelda 2 or the original Metroid and beat them in the 80s, so for those of us who have very fond memories of those days will feel right at home with this gem.

Pros:
- Engaging gameplay and very well thought out Metroid style level design and ability acquisition
- Variety of enviornments and enemy types
- New Game + mode with extra difficulty
- Tons of opptional collectibles and secrets that I still haven't found
- Optional extra hard dungeon for the completionists out there
- Vague nuanced story that is wide open for interpertation

Cons:
- Doesn't give much direction on where or what to do
- Level cap system is low and comes as a surprise if you haven't specd your character correctly

At the end of the day, if you stumbled on this page and are considering this game it's probably because you would enjoy it; it's a shame that I have never seen this advertised or recomended anywhere and I personally bought this game in early 2015 after scouring the internet for Metroidvania titles to hold me over till I found my next obsession and since I have never seen this come up on Steam's main page or seen any major publications praise this game despite SOOOO many of the games I own, play, and research are similar to this.

这是个非常有意思的游戏，是那种卷轴恶魔城闯关类的游戏，还是有一点难度的，玩起来重复闯关率会很高，因为好多关键收集要素要通过反复在各个区域寻找才能得到，这就比较繁琐，我这种看不太懂英文非常容易卡关。
这个小游戏在我玩的里确实比较出色，不过比较老，国内没有任何攻略，只有去油管找还能找到一点。希望能给想尝试这款游戏的玩家带来方便。

Just a boring slog to play through. Enemies are stupidly easy and simply pose as an annoyance, your attack is pitiful, it's extremely slow, and nothing is explained to you. Not even just the story; nothing about how to play is explained. Like, I get leaving things open for the player to discover, but I genuinely had no idea what I was doing for the first 20 or so minutes playing.

Speaking of main complaints people are writing on their reviews:

The level cap adds a layer of choice, difficulty and specialization that other games, that give you everything, don't have.

I think the game is not as hard as other retro platformers/adventures like Shovel Knight and, in fact, could be extremely easy later on, so experience loss is a must to punish you and, more important, making you feel in a real danger sometimes.

The randomess of the abilities... well if you can't tolerate randomess in a game with RPG elements, choose a pure platformer instead.

Exploration is what it is. You just explore to have fun and, maybe, get a cool thing. It's an unrewarding aspect of open world games by definition because the reward is reaching the zone you want to explore and not what may be there. Maybe, one day, another better open world game comes and do it better but I haven't played any single open world game that feel like is full of secrets or useful things waiting for you. Not even Skyrim, Breath of the Wild or The Witcher 3 give me a satisfactory feeling in that regard.

From my point of view this is a good game which main failure is lack of heaviness in general. Plot, graphics, abilities, items... are very lightweited, like if they are nothing special. With more attention, more flashiness or whatever, I would not have the sensation I am playing an indie game but a truly thought and structured adventure.

If this game were ever reworked and had a few componenets added/removed it would be a definite buy! However, it's hangups are just so troublesome. Backtracking is not fun and the shortcuts that are added from gaining new abilites don't actually make the levels feel shorter when going through them again. The fighting is just slow and bogs the game down. Had to drop it due to not wishing to backtrack to a shop to buy potions.

As you start to play hundred of indie games, you feel some emptieness that cannot be fullfiled anymore with those indies. However, if you start the adventure with Elliot Quest what you will have is a great game full of hidden itens, great adventure, story, great puzzles and controls.

This game is what I was looking for in a long time. Great boss fights, nice power-ups and the 8-bit graphics are too cute to pass by.

The only thing I would complain here is that you have to focus more or less in a single build so that you do not loose your char too easily, and that limits the replayability.

I would like to finish this review with the point that I really felt the energy of beating an awesome game, which sadly, cannot say for many games on steam.

Thank you devs and hope you guys bring more games like this!

[I]Elliot Quest[/I] est un jeu qui s'inspire de [I]Zelda 2[/I] : une carte du monde sur laquelle on se déplace pour trouver des donjons à explorer en 2D vue de profil, on y affrontera de nombreux monstres afin de tracer notre chemin jusqu'aux divers pouvoirs que les temples renferment et qui nous permettront par la suite de résoudre des puzzles, d'accéder à des lieux inaccessibles auparavant ou, plus simplement, nous aideront à traverser le monde plus facilement.

Le jeu n'est pas mauvais mais on ne peut s'empêcher de penser qu'il aurait mérité un bon coup de [I]polish[/I] final : un peu d'équilibrage pour la difficulté par exemple (les boss sont presque tous très simples à battre, alors que certains ennemis sont des plaies à combattre ou à éviter), rendre le jeu un peu plus clair (c'est peut-être voulu, pour rendre hommage à la "difficulté" à l'ancienne, mais le manque d'information sur ce à quoi sert tel ou tel objet, entre autre, est plus agaçant qu'autre chose), améliorer l'interface (pouvoir utiliser les gâchettes de la manette pour utiliser une autre capacité plutôt que de rentrer dans le menu à chaque fois notamment, les "cinématiques" trop lentes...) et un peu de travail supplémentaire sur les graphismes. Pas que le jeu soit laid, mais tout est très "carré" et manque de relief (beaucoup d’aplats de couleur) ce qui donne au jeu un aspect un peu amateur ("amateur" plus plus, mais amateur tout de même).

Concrètement, j'ai alterné entre le plaisir de jeu et la frustration d'être confronté à des erreurs de design qui m'ont parues assez basiques à repérer et auraient pu être corrigées facilement. J'ai eu besoin d'une douzaine d'heure pour arriver à la fin du jeu mais ceux qui apprécieront devraient pouvoir prolonger le plaisir assez longtemps puisque je suis loin du 100% et il y a un certain nombre de zones optionnelles du jeu que je n'ai pas pu explorer.

Dans un style similaire (quoi que plus axé exploration, là où [I]Elliot Quest[/I] mise plus sur les combats je trouve), je recommanderais plutôt de jeter un œil à [URL="https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198006498578/recommended/268770/"][I]Treasure Adventure World[/I][/URL] sur lequel je me suis bien plus amusé. Malgré ses défauts, [I]Elliot Quest[/I] reste toutefois un jeu tout à fait recommandable.

Contrary to other comments, I don't find the game at all difficult - but I actually grew up conquering Zelda 2 to the point where it was actually easy, so the game is understandibly challenging(without feeling cheap)

I'm going to be honest. I enjoyed this game. However I come from an old school gaming background and old school game design doesn't phase me. This game was very nostalgic to me emphasizing retro design style such as backtracking and getting lost trying to figure out where to go and figuring out what your powers do and how to use them etc.

It is not going to be for everyone and I recommend you know exactly what you are getting into before you purchase this game. The game design is going to heavily trigger someone who goes into it not knowing what to expect and doesn't hail from an old school game background.

I'm going to recommend this game only to people who can enjoy and appreciate old school game design. I will not recommend it to someone who cannot.

Controls are too bad. You have to constantly fight with your character's momentum in a platformer. Not a fun time. Also the XP penalty for dying is 1/4 of a level up and getting that XP back will take forever.

The decision to make you lose experience when dying is what made me stop playing the game. Why punish exploration? It doesnt just take away the experience since the last save, but more! In a game where you are never told what to do, exploration should be expected and not punished. It is hard but not in a "dark souls" way, just in a non justified way that destroys a good game in my opinion

This is an awesome pixelated platformer, which is just as nice to look at, as it is to play...In fact I can honestly say one of my favorites to play in the genre! People talk about Zelda II influences, but it goes way beyond it in gameplay and depth!

You will feel like the action is a little slow at first, but that is its intention and you will build on your abilities, which is part of the leveling system. It has a little of everything, open world map, action platforming, character leveling and karma for various paths and endings and lots of collectables.

If you are a novice or expert I think this one will be very well loved! I am 100%ing this game and at no point has it ever felt tedious! [Correction: 100% and loved every bit of it!]

My only MAJOR complaint is that when you quit playing from a save point with full health, you come back with reduced health as if you died! That takes some fun out when you have to spend time recovering health again when you begin playing. So make an attempt at a boss before saving for the day.

For the price, you will get so many hours of enjoyable challenges and playthrough. You will love the worlds and find Elliot a join to play. In all honesty, I am not sure why this game is not more popular and get more praise!!!

ACHIEVEMENTS: This one is pretty easy to 100%, no time trials and you do not have to finish the Game+ hard mode!

Elliot Quest é um jogo de plataforma 2D que lembra muito os antigos como Zelda e Mario. Ele tem MUITAS "side quests" como matar bossess, entrar em cavernas e coletar gemas, pergaminhos e jarros e não intereferem na história principal que contém três endings: o bom, o neutro e o ruim.

Mas depois que pesquisei acheio meio decepcionante que o fim se determina na escolha das suas skills e não nas escolhas e ações do personagem. Ás vezes ele é muito frustante e dificil demais, como se precisasse provar que o jogo é díficil.

Muitas vezes acabei mais me frustrando do que me divertindo com o jogo. Ao pegar itens você não tem uma minima descrição do que faz, tem que adivinhar. Até certos puzzles você não tem ideia alguma do que fazer. Inclusive um eu tive que procurar a resposta no youtube e até agora não entendi como se chegou aquela conclusão.

De fato, o jogo tem bons gráficos, bosses, quests e trilha sonora, mas só é recomendado para quem tem paciência, se não for o seu caso, passe longe deste jogo.

Elliot Quest es un gran título sin duda alguna, que convencerá a aquell@s a quienes les atraigan los juegos del estilo [u]metroidvania[/u] o que impliquen [u]exploración[/u].
Antes de seguir con el análisis/opinión, he de decir que en un principio estuve por solicitar un reembolso de este juego, ya que no soy de explorar mucho, me pone nervioso el dar vueltas por el mapa sin saber qué hacer o dónde ir... Pero le di una oportunidad, seguí jugando y... vaya decisión.

Tomamos el papel de Elliot, un chico que ha perdido a su mujer y tiene que recuperarla, desbloqueando a lo largo de este periplo escenas del pasado que nos ayudarán a comprender mejor cómo nuestro protagonista ha llegado hasta donde está.
En el [u]apartado gráfico[/u] tenemos un estilo [u]pixel-art[/u] muy cuidado y detallado; en el apartado sonoro tenemos una [u]música[/u] que, a pesar de [u]repetirse[/u] a lo largo del juego en varios niveles, es [u]bastante agradable[/u] y casa muy bien con los entornos.

El [u]diseño de niveles[/u] me parece [u]genial[/u]; contando con puzzles, acertijos, secretos, etc; todos con una muy [u]buena calidad[/u].
Una vez obtengamos un poder, como en todo metroidvania, podremos volver a visitar niveles en los que necesitaremos dicho poder para acceder a cierta zona.
Los [u]coleccionables son muy variados[/u]; podemos encontrar mejoras de salud, mejoras de magia y otros objetos; dichos objetos pueden ser para añadirlos a la colección personal de la que Elliot dispone en casa, para acceder a ciertas zonas del juego o para completar misiones.

En lo que a zonas de juego se refiere, por una parte tenemos el mapa general, una zona por la cual nos podemos mover libremente y en el que iremos desbloqueando nuevas zonas conforme avancemos en la trama.
A través de este mapa general podremos acceder a los niveles de juego, los cuales podríamos dividir en dos:

[*] [u]Niveles mazmorra[/u]: niveles con varias pantallas cuyo objetivo es [u]encontrar un poder y/o derrotar a un jefe[/u] para avanzar en la trama.
[*] [u]Niveles simples[/u]: éstos son más sencillos, y aunque pueden contar también con varias pantallas, no ocultan poderes o disponen de jefes, sino que más bien están para conseguir objetos coleccionables (aunque en las mazmorras también los podemos encontrar) o hacer de atajo entre una zona del mapa general y otra.

El juego cuenta con una [u]dificultad única, que hace que la exploración sea algo necesario[/u], por ejemplo, para recoger mejoras de salud o magia si algún jefe se nos resiste.
Y así llegamos a uno de los puntos que me parecen más peliagudos, que aun sin ser negativo, creo que se podría mejorar al menos un poco.
Por un parte; tenemos unas 5 zonas principales en el juego que debemos visitar obligatoriamente si queremos superar el juego (las cuales se nos van marcando con un halo de luz); ahora bien, en el mapa general disponemos de muchísimas más zonas.
De acuerdo, el juego se basa en la exploración, pero no vendría mal a veces que, por ejemplo, las zonas del mapa general que ya hemos visitado se marquen de alguna forma y poder saber si hemos completado dicho nivel o por el contrario, aún nos queda algo que hacer.
Siguiendo con el tema de la exploración, [u]el juego nos propone descrubrir ciertas mecánicas por nosotros mismos[/u]; algo que me ha parecido genial, pero que por otro lado puede llegar a ser confuso a veces.

Elliot's quest is a game that could have been good. Interesting bosses, story, decent pixel art, GREAT music.

But when it comes to game design it just fails seemingly taking every opportunity it can to make the game worse. Wasting your time with long invulnerability states on enemies, back tracking as it lets you get far into a dungeon before telling you "woops you dont have the right item, time to walk back." adding rpg elements and leveling up but punishing you for dying and punishing you even more when you find a free "level up" power up, as it negates all the exp you will have tirelessly fought to collect instead of adding to it!

And don't forget you will have no idea where to go most of the time.

This game is a tale in needless frustration. There is a good game in here, you will just want to kill yourself in the quest to find it.

Quiconque possède quelques connaissances du jeu vidéo reconnaîtra d'emblée sous les traits du petit [i][b]Elliot[/b][/i] ceux d'un certain [i][b]Kid Icarus[/b][/i] et dans son aventure des accents prononcés de [i][b]Zelda[/b][/i]. Notamment le deuxième opus, sorti sur nes - le seul que je n'ai jamais fait, pour d'obscures raisons que j'ai d'ailleurs bien du mal à m'expliquer. Bref, des sources d'inspiration à peine voilées, qui donnent un résultat pour tout dire remarquable.

Niveau direction artistique, rien à redire. Nous avons affaire à du pixel art tout ce qu'il y a de plus propre et à une bande son pour le moins... inspirée. Très proche de ce que proposaient ses mentors en leur temps, à tel point qu'elle fait mouche sur le champ. Prise de risque minimale, diront certains à raison, mais efficacité garantie. Les musiques sont vraiment un gros point fort du jeu, qui favorise pour beaucoup l'immersion !

Pour ce qui est du gameplay, là encore le résultat est à la hauteur, bien qu'il demeure classique. Au fil des zones et donjons que parcourt [i][b]Elliot[/b][/i], nombreux et variés d'ailleurs, il découvre divers pouvoirs (feu, glace, vent, terre), améliore sa quantité de vie, de mana, ainsi que son équipement : flèches, armure, bouclier, une paire d'ailes pour le double saut, des bottes pour rebondir sur les ennemis en les assommant au passage ou encore un collier le rendant assez fort pour pousser certains blocs. Sans compter qu'il dispose d'une sorte d'arbre de talent grâce auquel on pourra faire évoluer certains (mais pas tous) aspects du gameplay : cadence de tir, fréquence des critiques, portée des flèches, survivabilité ou efficacité de la magie. Tout ceci pour dire que la progression de notre personnage est palpable. J'en veux pour preuve le lancement d'une nouvelle partie, lequel s'avérera des plus... douloureux (rapport à la remise à zéro de nos aptitudes).

Chaque niveau que franchira [i][b]Elliot[/b][/i] le gratifiera d'un point supplémentaire à dépenser dans cet arbre de talent ; du moins, jusqu'au niveau 20. Il nous faut donc récolter de l'expérience, expérience que nous obtenons soit en récoltant des parchemins plus ou moins dissimulés, soit - vous vous en doutez - en tuant des monstres. Qui sont en passant d'une variété significative, que ce soit dans leur comportement, leur tendance offensive, défensive, ou leur capacité à attaquer de loin ou pas. A cela s'ajoute une foule de boss, parfois optionnels, et dans l'ensemble très bien fichus. Le dernier d'entre eux n'étant pas le plus réussi qui soit, l'aspect aléatoire trop prononcé de ses attaques pouvant faire s'éterniser le combat.

Ensuite, comment ne pas évoquer le level design ? En un mot, exemplaire du début à la fin ! Les lieux et donjons que traverse [i][b]Elliot[/b][/i] sont pensés jusque dans leurs moindres détails et donc conçus avec beaucoup d'ingéniosité. Tous regorgent de secrets et autres recoins qui seront parfois inaccessibles lors de votre premier passage. Il vous faudra y revenir une fois le pouvoir adéquat obtenu : en somme, une invitation à l'exploration. Un petit bémol, cependant, à propos de l'ultime donjon. On attend de lui qu'il soit un récapitulatif de l'aventure, une sorte d'examen au cours duquel on éprouve la capacité du joueur à user des pouvoirs qu'il aura récupérés. Sans être mauvais pour autant, loin s'en faut, il le laisse à ce titre un peu sur sa faim.

Que reste-t-il à dire ? Pas grand chose, en fait. Ah si, l'histoire ! Plutôt commune a priori, mais offrant une palette de choix aux conséquences irrémédiables. Se faire un allié ou un ennemi d'untel, tuer cet autre ou pas, piller ces coffres qui ne nous appartiennent pas, retourner cet objet à son propriétaire ou le conserver pour soi, autant d'alternatives qui exerceront une influence sur le karma d'[i][b]Elliot[/b][/i] et donc sur la fin. Il en existe trois, selon son alignement : bon, neutre ou mauvais. Un système quelque peu obscur, puisqu'on ne sait pas toujours si nos actions rentrent en ligne de compte, mais au demeurant intéressant. En clair, on ne nous prend pas par la main, ce qui est le cas pour l'intégralité de l'aventure en fait.

En dehors de ça, on peut rencontrer deux ou trois bugs mineurs : une jarre de magie irrécupérable, par exemple ; quelques confusions dans la dénomination de certains succès ; un personnage qui ne nous laisse pas passer, bien que les conditions soient réunies. Franchement, tout ceci est anecdotique et n'entâche en rien le plaisir de jouer.

The game: An unabashed Zelda II clone. In fact, some of the music is so similar I'm surprised they weren't sued by Nintendo.

The good: Really nice pixel art by Luis Zuno. I highly recommend checking out his youtube channel. The game also has very nice, tight controls.

The bad: The game is difficult. And not in a fun way. It starts off at a really enjoyable and rewarding level of challenge, but about halfway through it abruptly switches to overpowered enemies and constant instadeaths. The story also blows. Normally I wouldn't really comment on that, because no one plays a game like this for the story. But this game makes you constantly sit through a bunch of boring cut scenes and read droll, emo rubbish.

Not the worst game I've ever played by any means, but it really feels like a beta that needs a lot more work and refinement.

This game is pretty good. The two things I didn't like both reminded me of games from my childhood in a bad way, but aren't really issues with the game itself...

First, only the d-pad on my [pc] Xbox 360 controller works. This makes it feel like I am holding a tiny NES gamepad in my adult hands that want to be holding something comfortably after being used to earn wages all night. Obviously this also has something to do with my controller, but I was not pleased about d-pad movement.
(The game has since been rebuilt, so the d-pad issue has ostensibly been fixed)

Second, getting stuck in an area and needing to start a new game after playing for a few hours because I happened to go there before getting the fireball spell. To the credit of the game, it did not take nearly as long to recover and it was pretty fun after getting used to the d-pad...if a bit tedious, which still caused me to not take the game back up.

Now that the game has been tightened up with a rebuild, I'll definitely revisit it and recommend it to anyone who enjoys retro-style metroidvanias.

一个挺难的冒险类小游戏，只是随便玩了下就暂时不评价游戏性咋样了，让人吃惊的是在发售三年后它居然更新了，更新之后终于可以用手柄的摇杆来控制移动啦（之前只能用十字键），作者也给出了四种不同的按键配置可以选择（可惜还是不能设置键位，按键配置也没有写出来只能自己试），另外还增加了两个存档位、云存档、成就、隐藏要素等一些东西，不过原来的存档现在就暂时用不了了，作者说正在开发一个把老存档拷过来的工具，大约会在一个月之内完成，不想重开档的就坐等更新吧（作者好敬业，2333）。
这游戏进了好几次包的，想玩的推荐直接买key。

A very nice throwback at retro games. Seems inspired by a nice mix of a old NES adventure games.

Its also HARD like Nintendo hard in both gameplay and in progressing through clues to find all the items necessary to continue

It has a lot of extra challenges, definitely good. The pixel art and music are on point and the story is quite good. The true stars are the bosses, they are a though but fair challenge.

Give it a go, its awesome.

Edit: I just discovered the game has now achievements... maybe once in the future I will try to retrieve them, I was pretty happy to go with the neutral route.

Update 2024: Played again for the achievements, the game has only a couple downsides, one is a few bugs here and there specially using blocks of ice magic and 2 puzzles that are not possible to solve (which are minor, some coins and one magic upgrade), the second one is the karma system, shouldn't be there, is not fleshed out and the ending change is not that big, should have been cut out since the only thing it does is try to force you to replay the game for them, fortunately, already being familiar with the game I made a backup save to get the different endings easier without 3 full reruns.

This game is a fantastic Zelda II/metroidvania adventure. It was lots of fun to play, very addictive, and it only became a drag at the very end when trying to beat the superbosses. I 100%ed this game (well, I didn't get all the coin chests or all the endings, but I don't think that counts) and I have to say, I enjoyed it quite a bit! I did not use guides for most of it; I did get lost at one point and used a guide there, and I also got guidance for the superbosses and the final crystals, but other than that, a careful explorer can get pretty much everything. So:

Things I liked: the metroidvania gameplay, obviously, is the main draw. It's not a straight metroidvania: each area is self-contained. Basically, there's an overworld map filled with impassable areas raising exclamation points, and you go into these places to cross the map to the other side of that impassable area. These areas often have challenges requiring the use of upgrades or spells, so you may not be able to cross them at first but have to come back with better stuff. The game also has a nifty story told in flashbacks, a karma meter (which I never got to move), EXP and level-ups (it would have been nice to know what's actually important to have late-game, because you get 1 skill point at level-up and with the level cap you can only get some of the upgrades). Also, every new thing on the map is exciting to explore and discover! I guess that's what kept me playing for so many hours.

Things I didn't really like: the lack of direction. The game is deliberately designed with a "retro" feel. I honestly wish developers would stop doing that. I buy the simplicity in graphics, that's fine, but the game could well have explained more. For example, at one point you can find a blue book. It goes into your upgrade grid. What does it do? The forums aren't sure. The game sure doesn't tell you! I think, for the most part, you can kinda figure out where to go by just looking around on the map, but maybe also someone in the towns could kinda say something to point you in the right direction too? You also collect crystals -- why? What's the point? Turns out they open doors if you have enough of them, OK. So they're... door counters?

Other things of note: the game is pretty hard. There are lots of puzzles, lots of challenging platforming, etc. There's a very nice Hell-Temple-esque challenge area that's quite a bit harder than the rest of the game. And then there are... the superbosses. MASSIVE DIFFICULTY SPIKE, even compared to the Wizard's Tower. They're not required, of course, but yeah. My last week of playing this game was spent getting frustrated against one of these guys for a bit and giving up for the night. On the other hand, it felt damn good to kill the last one and open the door they were guarding!

Anyway, I had a lot of fun playing Elliot Quest. Other than those superbosses, the challenge level is great, though you may want to look things up on occasion in case you missed something big (I missed a crucial game mechanic, for example, that nobody bothered to tell me about in-game). Enjoy!

I kind of wish I could give this game a neutral review. But I can't, so negative it is. I feel like this game is really really close to being a great game, but falls short in the controls department.

I first tried it with my xbox controller. And the game made me use the arrowpad. No analog stick. I'm sure the arrowpad is great for some people, but I prefer the analog stick. So then I decided I would forget the controller and just use the keyboard. I've done keyboard controls on these types of game before. So I put my left hand on WASD and my character doesn't move, he just attacks. It turns out I would have to use my right hand on the arrow keys to move my character and my left hand to attack and jump. This feels very backwards. Also, I did a quick forum search and did not find any info about being able to remap controls.

My theory is that the person that developed this game never plays computer games. Which is fine... but before he released the game on steam he should have allowed a "pc gamer" to play it for 5 minutes, or 1 minute... that's all the time it really takes to find bad controls. Or at least done an internet search on what controls other similar games used. There's no need to reinvent the wheel after all.

Having good default controls is too important, considering the small amount of effort that it probably takes to change, to not spend some time on getting right.

An absolute delight. Gorgeous, packed with areas to explore, and sporting an array of multifaceted items with uses both in and out of combat. An easy recommendation to anyone who likes platformers or Zelda-likes (it's an obvious homage to Zelda 2).

The difficulty can be a bit steep, and, as you'll see the other reviews here mention, you're often lost as to what's next. The engine has some quirks, too (for me some sound effects appear and disappear from day to day). But, if you're willing to work with a few rough edges, and not above glancing at a walkthrough occasionally, you'll be rewarded with a jewel of a game. I'm playing through it a second time now, and I feel it's a real shame more people haven't heard of it. So give it a try.

It's an excellent game. A fun and difficult platformer. Good music and style. I like it.

But it's incredibly buggy. It's built in JS with an HTML5 engine and I've had no end of game breaking bugs and floor clipping. Random behaviour. Playing through it on another platform I broke through the floor and it autosaved in an unrecoverable way and had to delete my save file from near the end of the game. Maddening.

It also does not in any way work in the Steam Link. White screen and crashing.

So the game is good, but it's plagued by technical problems and is no longer supported.

Man, this is a tough one to give a thumbs up or down, and I'd say I'd give it 1.5 thumbs up, due to what could have been a truly amazing game that is held back by some curious decisions on the developers part, some of which could have been fixed by a week's worth of programming.

Overall, the game is gorgeous, and the music is a good homage to the bit tunes of yesteryear. The gameplay is solid, with good 2D shooting action, and the level up system is very good and dynamic. The boss fights are fun and each one is different, and each area gives you a different feel, but now for the bad points.

1. This game does not hold you hand, in the slightest. While hand-holding (I'm looking at you, Navi) is generally discouraged in games nowadays, I'd still like to know what the heck I am doing, or what a powerup does that I just got. Occasionally, the game will tell you, but othertimes it doesn't. I picked up this book atop a mountain that, after completing the game, I still have no clue what it does. Further, when the game starts, there's basically no cutscene or story, you just find yourself in a forest (more on this later) and have no idea what is going on. I went to the left, and before I knew it was on the overworld map, wandering around aimlessly. Eventually I went back and did the area, but this happens ALOT in this game. You'll explore and explore until you are blue in the face, only hitting wall after wall until you give up and look online where you are supposed to go next. Also, once, I went through this temple and afterwards it said a new area had opened for me in the East. Where? What area? A little cutscene or a show on the map would have helped tremendously. This game desperately needed an Exclamation point on the Overworld just to tell you where you can go next. All the great open world exploration games do this. Fallout 3, Zelda games, Skyrim...They all tell you where you can go next if you get bored or lost, but don't force you to go there. This is a simple feature that, if the developer makes a 2.0, I'd highly recommend.
2. The leveling system: Now, before I said the leveling system was good in its inner workings, but in the way that you level, I feel it is broken. When you die, you lose a % of your XP earned on the current level. AND all the enemies respawn. There were many times where I was stuck in an area that I had gotten too deep into (got halfway through and got a save stone) and then realized I was over my head and tried to go back, only to die a bunch and lose a bunch of XP. Or, in tough dungeons, you will die alot to monsters and traps, and so halfway through the game I realized I had to go to the next area, and it was kicking my butt. So then I had to farm for XP. Luckily, I discovered an exploit in the mountains where you can grind a level for only a few minutes of grinding, but this should not have happened. Half the problem is that when you go to a save point, you only get half health and half magic. The original Metroid did not refill your health at save stations, and there is a reason no game has imitated it since. It either leads to boring grinding for health, or that you die alot. So when you die, these three things happen: 1. Lose some XP, 2. Enemies respawn, 3. Down to half health and half magic. This means that it is very easy to get into death cycles, and get behind in the XP game. My simple suggestion to the developer would be to simply eliminate the lose in XP AND to give full health at save stones. Or least create two difficulty settings, where the easier one did as I suggested.
3. The story. Now, I love stories where you wake up and know nothing and it is slowly revealed to you who you are and why you are here. My favorite game of all time is System Shock 2, and it did this, but it needs to make sense, or at least have some story to start you out with. This game literally just starts. Bam. Time to play. That's ok, but it doesn't make sense from a story perspective, since, as it becomes revealed, you didn't have amnesia or anything, and thus should have known the story from the beginning. Now I am not opposed to telling the story over the course of the game to not bog-down the beginning, but something would have been nice. Some little cutscene, 20 seconds. Even Sonic 3 has a small cutscene at the beginning. Later, in dungeons, alot of the story is told in text while you are playing, and half the time I miss it, but it is so vague that it doesn't make sense until almost the end of the game. Again, my suggestion to the developer would be to add a simply 20 second cuscene at the beginning so that the player can get their bearings as to the general plot.
4. The final boss fight: The final boss fight is probably the most boring slog of a boss fight you will ever face. Once you figure out his patterns, he is easy, but he has like 8 different attacks, and, if I understand correctly (looked at an walkthough online), you can only damage him on ONE of them. And they are totally random. You can go for 5 minutes not being able to attack him, and man does that get boring fast. And that one time her actually does the attack you can hurt him on, and you screw up and do no or little damage? Well, welcome to 5 more minutes of not being able to attack him. It...just...won't...end. It is also disappointing that, over the course of the game, you gain all of these spells, but only one of them actually does anything in the battle. My suggestion to the developer is to change the random % that procs the attack you can actually damage him to 50%, or at least 25%, but it feels like right now it is somewhere between 5-10%, and that makes the battle drag on forever.
5. A Warp System: This game deperately needed the ability to warp to and from locations. Sometimes, you get stuck in a place that is too tough for you, and you just want out, but you're stuck. A few key areas, containing portals, would have been awesome. One time, I climbed this tall mountain full of tough enemies and I finally ascended to find a strange building, and when I went to open it...It's locked, and I don't have the key. So now I have to scramble down the mountain, find the key, and go back up, AGAIN. If, by climbing, I had activated a portal, so that I would never need to climb again, not having the key would not have been so annoying as it was.

So, after all of that, why do I recommend this game? Overall, the game was fun, but exceptionally frustrating at parts, and while some of the deeper game elements could be improved, my main gripes with the game where simple things, some of which would require very little effort to fix, and thus aren't deep-rooted problems. It's unfortunate these problems made it through playtesting. Thus my recommendation has an * attached. If you like this style of game, you will like Elliot Quest, but until these problems are resolved in 2.0, it will be annoying to play it.

If you're one of the cool kids who likes Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, you need to play this game. It's a love letter to that game, and expands upon the core mechanics a bit to add some depth.

What an unexpectedly fantastic little (big) game! As others have mentioned, this does have a Zelda 2 vibe. But, expect to enjoy a Metroid vibe as well. Lots of exploration for loot and upgrades. The game throws you into the environment, and the world is your oyster! You can make it as difficult or as smoothe as you'd like, depending on what stats in which you invest and progressive upgrades you have.

So, the easiest way I've found to outline a game's points is to list the pros and cons...

Pros:
- 8-bit feel with near-modern control scheme
- Lots of exploration, lots of upgrades, lots of secrets
- Great boss fights...and lots of 'em. There are 4 main dungeons before unlocking the last, but plenty of other side dungeons. Each dungeon comes with at least 1 boss; some have mini-bosses as well. It's a weird construct, but it definitely works.
- It's unconventional. Yes, it resembles Zelda 2 and Metroid, but it has its own style. It doesn't hold your hand...it has very little in-game prompting. You need to discover things for youself.

Cons:
- Honestly, I really can't think of any. For an indie title, it feels polished and rewarding...Great job!

In summary, for $10 and nearly 24 hours until the final cutscene (not 100% - other higher level areas to explore), this game pays dividends. That's what I love about Steam. These little-known games creep into your "Recommended" list, and, after perusing the reviews, you're enjoying another hidden gem! Pick it up; give it a try.

Just an addendum with regard to another game Elliot Quest feels like...not the difficulty...the construct. Dark Souls. There were only a few, but, in the negative reviews, a common "complaint" existed...unreachable areas and circuitous routes to backtrack. In its defense, the game is intentionally designed to have barriers between sections of the world. And, after exploration and lots of enemy fights, shortcuts begin to appear...much like Dark Souls. The first playthrough of an area is a real challenge, twisting your character through a maze. But, as you unlock the shortcuts, the map and game design begin to unfold before your eyes. I view this as a postive for sure!

This game has terrible controls and rips off Zelda sound effects and music left and right. The game is trying to be a Zelda 2 clone which I guess in that regard it actually does a decent job.

If you really loved Zelda 2 or wish to play frustratingly hard game from the NES era then maybe this game is for you… but for anyone else not so much.

I couldn’t stomach the game for longer than the min review time. The sprite art work is pretty good and the music is mediocre. Like I said if you are looking for a NES style game or a Zelda 2 clone then this is your game.
