Dungeon Hero is a classic style Dungeon Crawler with a Casual/Cartoony twist.
Game doesn't run in VR without trippy, pixelated graphics making it unplayable in VR.
Avoid unless you're okay with regular, flat visuals on a monitor.
See forum. Graphics are garbled, game doesn't work.
its a fun and simple game i always seem to come back too no matter the age, there have been some times that items havent shown up like a key to a chest but all of the important stuff needed for progression is there and its very rare when it does happen.
Kein Controller Support in Vr!! // No Controller Support in Vr !! I tried it for nearly one hour now and it is not working !! //

EDIT: BEWARE!!! I tried to register the game and lost 13 hours of game time! I lost ALL my maps, characters, pets, inventory... Everything reset and my save files are gone!!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!
I've had Dungeon Hero for a little while now and decided to try playing it again, because I saw some reviews stating that this is a P2W game. Rest assured, there are no IAP in this game. All In-game cash and in-game gems are earned through beating the dungeons. Read the game description. The developer even states the game does not have any IAP. You people that think this is a P2W game, need to remove your reviews!
Dungeon Hero is a cute FPS/RPG dungeon crawler. It is much like a basic Dungeon Master or Eye of the Behold type game. At first the dungeons are small, but you can unlock larger dungeons that will give you more gems upon completion of each dungeon.
There is hand-to-hand, ranged and magic combat. There are many support spells to learn also. The graphics are very nice and crisp. Everything looks great and distinguishable. You won't need to squint or wonder what anything is. If so, everything has tooltips. It's a very friendly game. I haven't seen all the dungeon skins yet. There are supposed to be 5 in all, but what I have seen is done very well.
YES, there are PETS!!! Yes, they do fight and even run away! lol You do level them up and you get to choose their stat upgrades as you do your own characters. This is a one character game. You can level up multiple characters, but you only take one into the dungeons. You only get to take one pet along too. Enemies are varied and are designed in a cute fashion, kind of like WoW.
The game has a Random Dungeon Generator so every play through is unique, or if you want, it has a fairly robust dungeon editor. I am currently building my own dungeon and it's very fun and easy to use! I can see I'll be putting in some time on this game!
It's a fun little dungeon crawler, but don't expect a deep experience or story. It's just fun to play. There is a mini-map so you won't get lost. There are secret door to find and many treasures to behold! The controls work great and combat is very fun! Everything seems to be thought out and implemented very well.
It's kid safe so far. No gibs or gore! lol There are many character to unlock as well. It looks like a fun game for both kids and adults. Lot's of monsters to fight and lots of loot to find! I whole heartedly recommend this game to anyone that enjoyed Dungeon Master or Eye of the Beholder. Same type of game, with updated graphics and sound. Enjoy! :-)
Beware: One bug that I found is DO NOT Alt+Tab while the game is running. You will not be able to get back into the game and will have to force quit.
played this game for 5 minutes. It is absolutely aweful. Trash mobile crossover.
Dommage.
Works pretty well as a coffee break game. It's competently made, nothing fancy but all the expected stuff is there.
It's poorly ported mobile game. Controls are just terrible
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Keyboard & Mouse. VR Only Review.
So this is an old-school grid-movement dungeon crawler with a super simple combat system: just click. You don't have to aim, just make sure you are facing the correct direction. There's lots of loot everywere. Swords, axes, maces, wands, bows, crossbows, shields, arrows, and magic spells to learn in the form of books. There's also head armor and potions to pickup. The menu did expand past my VR FOV, but there is an option to reduce menu size & it kind of helps a little.
There's lots of enemies from bats, plants, goblins, & ghouls, etc. However, there's very little difference in enemy skins other than some take longer to take down or hit hard (ghosts are immune to most physical damage). There's lots of traps, teleports, & device activations and random holes on the ground. You can move 4 ways and turn left or right. You can carry 2 weapons or 1 weapon and 1 shield. However, most melee weapons are basically just skins and the only thing that matters is their listed DPS. Same with armor/shields, except their defense obviously.
There is a lot of looking for keys to open doors. Or activating the correct lever to open a gate. Despite all that, I was actually having fun and wondering why this game got all the negative reviews. I know when you die the game asks for gems to restart at the same spot, but you don't have to do that (gems are given as daily rewards or for finishing a dungeon ... as far as I know you can't buy them anymore). Is that the reason for all the negativity?
Nope. So just when the game starts being fun, you get hit with fireball trap hell. You basically have to run around fast to avoid fire ball damage. Balls to the face over and over again. You will use all your potions. You will lose all your mana. Trying to escape all the balls to the face. Finally, you get to the last room and you only have this one key to pickup from the ground but there's just so many balls ... maybe a pron actress can finish this obstacle course. But I quit.
Rate 5/10. It's not bad, but just several negatives bring it down to mediocrity. If you want better options in VR for old school dungeon crawlers try KryptCrawler or Crystal Rift, the extra money is worth the much better experience in this case!
P2W basic game. There are better and cheaper games on steam that succeed where this game poorly fails. The biggest issue for me is the lack of ability to inmersion. Sadly I cannot recommend this game even with a 90% discount,
Tons of monsters.
Secret walls.
User maps.
Works without VR gear.
Only thing I kinda dislike is the way the weapons work kinda makes combat slow if your using a sword and shield and kinda makes dual wielding usless with a mouse and keyboard I have yet to try with a controller so I'll edit when I have still really like the game x3
VR inutile.
It's one of those old-style 90° turn RPGs, with lots of puzzles in the style of "which combination of what opens the way".
Aaand, it works on Linux with the HTC Vive.
I have tried to play this on an Oculus system.
The controllers suck big time no matter if i use keyboard or gamepad.
Right now the game seems to be made for mobile phones more than Oculus rift.
The game lacks decent control of the character. Until this is fixed, stay away from it.
I enjoyed it.
This game is best played in stereoscopic 3D. I don’t have VR but found it works well on NVIDIA 3D vision. Looking down a long corridor, Monsters and items all look fantastic in 3D.
Its fun but it needs more content. It also at the very least needs a hard mode. You may find it challenging at first but very soon it becomes EZ mode and I would keep playing it if there was a hard mode.
Mega Fun xD
This game has the worse control system ever seen in any VR game and it has not chance to remap the keyboard keys or controller buttons.
Bought this game looking for a "VR Dungeon Crawling" experience for my wife. At $2.79 it's a huge ripoff. The game has microtransactions to try and make you pay money for features. The VR support is "gimmicky" installed, i.e Non existant, no controller support, movement is nauseous. This is the first time I had to ask for a refund, and it's only 2 bucks, but I feel ripped off!!
Il gioco è veramente brutto!!!! Sconsigliato alla grandissima!
great way 4 us vive owners 2 xperience the inferiority of oculus games. still quite a bit of fun in vr, lots of replayable grinding in random dungeons. i cant get thru main dungeon tho, cant figure out the puzzles. main dungeon needs walkthru. u can get game 4 free on android phone.
I was searching for a gridder to enjoy during the Winter Steam sale and was disappointed by the offerings. I ended up with Dungeon Hero, simply because the developer removed all microtransactions, and I wanted to support that decision with real-world dollars. I ended up being pleasantly surprised with it.
Dungeon Hero is a casual (and pretty shallow) but fun Action / Gridder (think: first-person, grid-based RPG-esque games such as Legend of Grimrock, Eye of the Beholder, or Dungeon Master). There is NO story, just dungeon crawling, monster bashing goodness. The main draws are the randomly generated dungeons / loot (as in Diablo) and unlockable characters and pets (gems are picked up by completing dungeons and used for unlockables). I've put around 8 hours into it, and I've still got a lot to unlock.
The assets are pre-purchased (meaning, you've likely seen them before) and a bit cartoony looking, if that sort of thing bothers you. I wouldn't enjoy them in a more serious gridder, but they seem to suit the casual aspect of this game pretty well.
The addition of a quick-n-dirty level editor is smart, and you can bring everything out of the dungeons with you and transfer gear to other characters. Dungeons are completely randomized; however, if you feel like playing through a designed dungeon the dev has included a few of those, too. For me, $6.99 is a bit steep for a casual game (I bought it at a sale price of $3.49), but if it fits what you're looking for, it might be worth it for those times when you just want something light to play.
I think it's a good Fun Game for all, and at £4.99 I give it 10 out 0ut 10 for Fun .
there have more improvement on this game, it is because the game design is like 198X,
too simple.
but i cannot ask anymore on this game, because the price only below $30 HKD.!!!!
and I cannot use $30 HKD to exchange a dinner !!!!
Dungeon Hero is a simple, casual, first-person perspective, action, dungeon crawler. It plays like a gridder movement-wise, but unlike a gridder, you do not choose a party of characters whose skills complement eachother, instead you play as a solo adventurer and you click on the screen to swing whatever weapon you have equipped.
Thankfully, there are no longer any monetary purchases to unlock content. All content is unlocked via gems which are only obtained by completing dungeons. There are a number of different adventurers to unlock as well as cute little pets which will actually help out in battle. You can also unlock the various dungeon skins for the randomized dungeons with gems as well.
The game includes a 16 level, well-crafted dungeon filled with puzzles, monsters and treasures, but it will probably only take a few hours to complete. After that you are free to run it again, but there are also randomized dungeons to play through. While not crafted as in depth as the main dungeon, they do at least offer some variety and exploration.
While playing you gain any number of dropped weapons and armor, and no matter what character you take, you are free to equip anything you want. The problem with this is that every character roughly plays exactly the same way making little need to unlock other adventurer types. As you progress through the dungeons you find higher and higher leveled equipment. When you start new dungeons you find equipment based off of your current level or equipment stats. This means you have little need to upgrade your weapons and armor outside of the dungeon, which is available to you, but mostly uneeded. It also means the dungeons never really get challenging. This really is just a casual game with little strategy or skill required. The only challenge in playing through is figuring out the puzzles which hinder your path to the end of the dungeons.
If that was all that was offered with this game, I would probably say there just wasn't enough content for the gem grinding required to unlock everything, but I think what saves this game and makes it a worthwile game to play is the ability to make your own dungeons and then upload them for other players to play through. As of right now, there is not a huge player-base creating dungeons, but there is still quite a list of player-made dungeons available. Obviously the quality of these dungeons is entirely dependent on the skill of the designer, so they can vary in how fun they are to play through.
All in all, this game makes for a fun, satisfying jaunt through a dungeon, but it probably isn't going to hold the interest of players looking for any real strategy or character building.
In short
Who's it for?
People who like grid based dungeon crawlers and just want to kill time for a bit and don't mind that the extra content is gained through grinding for gems but the main content is available. There is no cash shop and you don't need to pay real world money to unlock the content despite what other reviews state.
In long
So I like this game on mobile and while yes this is a port with a cash shop ( that I don't think exist in game) you don't have to pay real world cash to progress. The gems are easily aquired with a bit of grinding and loot selling. The game is fairly easy more so since the gems are easily given per play. People seem to not want to put the effort of earning the gems to progress. Also the gems are used to unlock EXTRA content as the MAIN game is unlocked from the getgo and it has puzzles and a story. It's not a terribly deep game but it's a nice little time sink . There doesn't seem to be a weight limit to the loot you can carry and your character is customizable stat wise. Want to be a dual weilding sellsword that can cast heal spells you can, Just know that based on the character you pick any stat that deviates from it's class costs gems you need to earn. As mentioned I've played this game on mobile and love delving to see what loot I can grab and stuff I can unlock and never paid a dime in the cash shops. Playing on the steam version is more liberating cause instead of gold I earn gems and it's easier to unlock things.
fun game, works well on the oculus rift dk2. : )
Cant understand this negative comments here ! Of course, its a simply old school roleplay game.
I play it with the Oculus Rift and its for the rift the first playable roleplaygame. I like it, it has charme !
There is no need to buy gems, you can play for free and get enough gems in the game to increase your skills and unlocking other thinks like charakters, pets etc.
For this cheap price, I can recommend it !
Big VR experience! I can recommend this game to every oculus owner.
Without vr very good game as well :)
I am quite surprised by the quantity of negative reviews, which seem to be more a knee-jerk reaction to micro-transcations than the game itself. The game is designed as a simple hack-and-slash game. A casual game to play during dead time. As such, combat and dungeon exploration are the key components - not unlocking heroes.
The random game modes are easy enough to complete without your hero dieing (which only costs two gems for revival), and these modes provide you with the gems needed to advance your hero with enough left to go to your stockpile for the occassional death or weapon improvement. With leveled up characters and some spare potions, the large random maps and the more complex, 16-level, hand-designed dungeon provide you sufficient gems to unlock higher level pets and heroes.
In addition, the main benefit to higher level characters is greater starting stats and base stat ceiling. Lower level heroes can be as powerful as higher ones by buying stat boosts at the cheaper price of 1 gem per stat increase. Personnally, I like to get higher level heroes for astestics and completeness not gameplay benefit.
While the game could be defined as pay-to-win (assuming you define winning as a complete unlock of all heroes and pets), this would miss the main focus of the game, which is casual combat. As a player, the micro-transcations primary purpose is to allow you quickly unlock a particular hero or reduce the time needed to reach a certain self-imposed goal; while at the same time, supporting the developer.
Micro-transcations aren't inherently bad, they just have been implemented in ways to force players to pay often or suffer significant wait times. As I have presented, this game doesn't suffer from this problem, so micro-transcation shouldn't be the reason you don't play it.
Is this game great? No, but it doesn't set out to break new ground or have complex gameplay mechanics. It does intend to provide hours of casual fun and I would say it does this quite well.
Are there areas that could do with improvement? There are definitely a few aspects that could be changed to improve the fun.
It would be great if custom dungeons of sufficient size and monster quantity provided gems (even if it is just 1 or 2). This would reduce the dependence on the simple random dungeons to boost gems.
Giving players more potions in the store would also be a huge benefit especially for warriors who suffer from the lack of sufficient spell-casting to stay healthy and deal damage.
The last area that could a little work is customization of dungeon details - most notable props and chests contents. The ability to have force certain chests to include a health or shield potion would allow dungeon creaters finer control over the dungeon progression and puzzles.
Also, this game could practically designed for achievements. Achievements act like added objectives in lot of games, and these could reduce the repetitveness of the default game modes.
Who would I recommend this game to? I would recommend this game to players seeking a well-made hack-and-slash with simple combat mechanics. Also those you enjoy dungeon crawlers would probably enjoy this game as well.
http://droidsoft.fr/2015/03/23/dungeon-hero-rpg-un-dungeon-crawler-freemium-tres-honnete-sur-android/
not a bad game for £5, though buying crap in game is highly annoying. Reminds me of poor mobile games and the sense of the game devs trying to leech as much out of you as possible. I'd pay double if they'd get rid of these annoying features. well until they do I'm hitting delete.
I do not expect to have to pay money to advance after I have bought a game. It's a rip off. Too bad, because I think the game is fun. Stupid gems......
This is not a challenging game, and the characters soon get the same feel to them, there is no real difference between any classes, you can boost a knight to a fireball spewing monster hero and of course dual wield heavy hammers with a mage and slay your way just as effective as any traditional melee class. Wich takes away the point in unlocking 10 - 15 characters for gems that you can buy for real life money or earn by completing dungeons.
Pets have the same generic feel that yourself as a character have with a very simple skill point system to level up. Beside that they all are huge and clumsy taking forever to get into combat and have no self preservation at all, you soon start to wonder whats the point in having them there at all.
Time for another review))
I have played this game for about 100 hours and i find it very enjoyable.
It is an original idea using cartoony Carectors and put together very well, the whole concept of the game is excellent but still room for improvement.
The developer has a money spinner here and if he/she plays their cards right this game could be a big seller and win awards but it would mean changing and improving a few things.

Bad points...
The monsters have the same carectoristics exept archers, would be nice to see monsters throw fireballs and poisen clouds and move and attack in different ways to make it more challenging and interesting
The monsters level up when you level up this needs to be different to give player more encouragement to level up and use their gems as it is i can see no logic in leveling up a carector and using your valuable gems until this changes.
Pets EXP points are static around 3 to 4 points with each hit regardless of increasing their damage level stat, I would of thought that when you increase your pets strength and agility which increases your damage level this would increase the amount of EXP points you recieve from attacking monsters.
Also pets can't do magic regardless of having the function to increase their macic stats with gems the only improvement i can see with upgrading pets stats is increasing their health so they can fight longer periods of time before dying and waiting 25 seconds to revive, this needs much improvement.
You can't buy spell books in shops and they can be hard to get in gameplay
The magic spells does not increase in strength when you increase the spells level, all it does is decreases the waiting time to cast the same spell again (Countdown bar under spell used moves faster from right to left) and this makes no logic as when you level up so does the monsters you fight which means you have to shoot more fireballs to destroy monster, I think it should be that when your spells levels increase so does the power of the spell used too and that makes sense.
Joystick 360 degree buttons needs to be used a lot to center screen which is annoying, would of been better for the screen to auto center itself and just use the 360 buttons to look around left/right/up/down and when 360 buttons released the screen returns to center itself automaticly.
No joystick key allocated to delete on screen messages you must use the mouse to do this so this game depends on 2 pieces of hardware if you want to use a joystck.
No tab to configure game keys/joystick keys
Need to heal pets with magic
Pets need to heal Carector
More pets needs to be added to selection
Has no steam achievements or cards and this is important as it gives gamers targets to reach and improves sales of the game.
Would be nice to buy the soundtrack
Would be nice to have a tab to click on to reset a carectors stats (start from fresh) BUT still keep any UNUSED GEMS in inventory, and give a message warning to click on YES or NO to reset that one carector you are currently playing on the screen, to resets all carectors you need to do this with each one in turn.
Would be nice to see new pets such as a baby deer/Fox/Golden Eagle/Polar Bear/Butterfly/Bee/Lion/Panda Bear/Penguin/Sea Lion/Crocodile/Dragonfly the list is endless))
Would like to see some new carectors such as...A Dalek (Dr Who) and a Cyberman (Dr Who)...Marvel Carectors such as Wonder woman and Catwoman Batman Superman Supergirl Flash the list is endless))
Besides all this it is still a game worth playing and has great possibilitys if the developer takes advantage of improving this game with patches which i strongly advise him/her doing
Gems is no issue in this game if you play this game right as you build up your carector/pet on the first level in the prison cells and exit game and do it again (Same Level) this way you build them up and get loot then complete the whole 16 levels to get 60 gems free, also you get 3 gems free everyday as a freebie if you know how to do this (which i do)
The reason for purchasing Gems in this game is for those who wants to unlock everything fast and have a big headstart in the game from the start (but this is not needed to complete this game)
This is a good game and if you love dungeon games like i do then you will love it.
All this game needs is some improvements to make it a smash hit, the trick here for complete success is to keep the gamers interested and addicted to playing this game which improves sales and development of the game and makes the developers lots of money.
So developers get your fingers out and start improving this game if you want to make loads of MONEY!!
Though microtransactions were clearly mentioned I wanted to give this a try, because the art style looked nice.
I have to admit, I regret nothing. This game really is awesome if you're searching for a simple, yet addicting dungeon crawler, that has no deeper mechanics than attributes and items. Actually a ♥♥♥♥ load of them. I am 8 hours in and still find new items models on a regular base. Also there is no party to manage, only your character, which is a big plus for me!
As for the microtransactions, they are really unneccessary and optional. In the time you need fully level a character in his basic attributes (so without rasing them further with gems), you get enough gems along the way to get the next one afterwards.
Finally a dungeon crawler without that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of permadeath.
Micro-transactions now are totally unnecessary because the gems (which are necessary to grow the character, unlock new heroes, dungeon and upgrade weapons), get coming to the end of the dungeons.
Overall it is a pleasant and entertaining game, although I find it too easy. The music is very beautiful.
Loaded with Micro transactions. The gameplay is a mindless grindfest. It has potential, but thanks to the micros (anywhere from $1.99-$50), it ruins any sort of potential the game might have had. I will say the puzzles can be a bit entertaining. I can't really give this one a positive review. The dev claims "pay to support the developers". I did that when i bought the game. This feels like an android/ios port.
Its hard to say yes or no to the game. i decided against because its too simple. its a funny tiny game with funny grafics and a great sound but it is much less complex than even ancient dungeon master. 1 armour slot, 2 x 2 weapon slots - thats all. hundreds of weapon skins around 1 weapon value. it doesnt matter if you use a club, hammer, staff dagger - all the same use.
not even mentioning the gem purchase options for cash, which you dont have to buy but it makes the devs aim very obvious.
nevertheless its a fine , lovely but tiny game
Hi there,
on start I would like to say I am older player. I have played similar games like DM1, DM2, Eye of Beholder, Lands of Lore, Stonekeep, Legend of Grimrock etc. so I have few games to compare to.
Generally the gameplay, design, atmosphere is quite nice and I hope this game will develop further and end as something to be remembered, but there is still long way to go.
Here are my suggestions, I guess and hope majority of it is well known to you and will be done(there might be something that is there but I haven't yet encountered it as I have the heroes around level 7):

First of all, do not make the gamers press the W key to move forward so damn often. This key is stressed enough.

Sound and music volume control is a must have.

Key binding for spells, potions, attack. I suppose it is designed for tablets also, but why to skip PC users.

More types of equipment. Give equipment some more stats, abilities. You know what I am talking about.

Give weapons special attacks - for example dagger from left to right for 50 percent for open wound. Blunt weapons from bottom to top for chance to knock back the enemy. Swords could have a chanceto disarm the enemy for some time etc.

The monsters are nice, but I am lacking the skills like throwing, spell casting, poisoning, paralyzing one hand, special announced strong attacks, resistances etc.

To change the play style the ranger could be faster to avoid the spells, arrows, the mage could have spells for that - shield, counter spell, and the warrior bonus to shields as magic resist for example.

I read about the boss at the end of dungeon - great idea. Do not make the game too easy. No one will remember it, enjoy it and play it long enough.

And last but not least. If you insist on the farming of gems(if not buying them for real money which seems in this phase of the game a little over the top), make it better. The random dungeons are too simple.
After writing the things that bothers me and I would like to see improved, it seems hard to recommend the game, but I would like to see the future of this game. You have my recommendation.
Its simple but a great game..... as usual greed of the developers has taken control as there are in app purchases at this current time..... cannot recommend cause of the in app purchases.....
This is a pay to play... i that way that you to get the full game need to go out and use $ to get Gems.. not a fan of that kinda games..
A great casual dungeon crawler game but with more cartoon style enemies.
The artwork/atmosphere, sound is great and the game is fun to play with a good UI and responsive controls.
Puzzles are as good as games costing much more, and is full of loot :D
There is a microtransaction system, however , you can get plenty of the gems for playing the actual game,
and the dungeons aren't very large generally
The store is for the lazy imo, you can get plenty of gameplay satisfaction without using it.
Good editor to make own dungeons for others to play.
This is a cash cow. You need gems to increase your stats above a certain level, to improve items, to unlock heros and pets. You get 5 for completing a dungeon (3 in "easy" mode). you need 1-3 to improve your stats. To do the other things will take a VERY long time, or requires you to purchase them with real life money. You can buy in game gold with gems, but cannot buy gems with igg. If it wasn't for that, I would say its an easy, simple, if clunky, game, but well priced.
Micro-Transactions.. Generic Might and Magic knock off..
Generic Skill point system that doesnt really do much for the character
cartoony enemies mixed in with lore worthy enemies
having to unlock everything with Premium in game money
Just no
Lemme edit in the fact that the dev responded hatefully a few days after I made this review then changing his response a few months later..
Alright, i haven't written many reviews, But i have played a lot of rogue like games - I own about 20 of them. this is the first truely 3d driven rogue like that i have seen in a while, It plays quite similar to eye of the beholder as far as inventory and movement is concerned. The dungeon itself - I tried a few random dungeons - i didn't make it to far on the "story" dungeon. If you liked grimlock, or EotB, you'll enjoy the story dungeon. Teleporters, Secret things to open doors, The only thing i didn't see were traps. But i am assuming the game is in early release and things will be coming along.
Please note - You have to use "gems" to purchase characters, Pets, Character improvements past thier max (ie, Knight strength is max 6. Gotta pay 1 gem to get it to 7) Now, You can earn gems by playing random dungeons - The small ones take about 1/2 an hour to complete and net you 5 gems. So you can finish the game with out paying a cent. The purchase just lets you speed things up.
Weapons and potions and things like that - Everything is identified. I would hope that in the future it would become fully random so you could have the true rogue experience, But right now what you see is what you get.
As far as leveling goes - You can level you character, You can level your pet, There seems to bee some "hidden" characters and pets that you can eventually earn by unlocking the other classes - I haven't seen any "magic or legendary weapons" yet, but keep in mind that i've just scratched the surface of this game.
Monster models are interesting, They are definatly fleshed out, though they seem cutesy instead of threatening. Granted don't take the cute models as easy push overs, some of them hit tremendosly hard.
My take is right now 7/10 Needs some improvment.
- No back Stabbing - You can sneak up and hit things but there dosn't seem to be any bonus
- the random dungeons make no sense some times. But hey, It's random
- Equipment is limited. 3 slots.
- No hot keys for potions.
One minute review edition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XZWEaCZYho
At the beginning, you pick a character class by spending your first set of "gems" the premium currency in the game. You then have the option of exploring the premade dungeon, a randomly generated map, or a custom created map that the community or you have created (yes there is a map creator). All different types of loot will drop for your character but the combat and equipment system is very simplistic which adds to the game's casual laid back nature. The enemy and gear models seem to be endless and adds to the ambience of the cartoony themed artwork. When I first started the game, I thought this was going to be a dud but I learned quickly that it's a lot of fun. Controls are extremely wonky, so spending a couple minutes switching them around will make your time with this game all the more enjoyable. There are micro transactions but they are 100 percent not necessary, as you can earn gems by beating the game. If you're looking for a serious big boy RPG, look elsewhere, but for 7 dollars this game hits the mark.
it can be a nice casual little game but there is a cash shop inside the game with real money : so why do we need to buy it ?
I would love to recommend the game. but I can not. They make clear in the storepage the game has micro-transactions. that is fine. but let sumarize it: want to upgrade your equipment? need a gem. want a pet? need gems. want a new hero? need gems. want bigger random dungeons? need gems. It is a fun and charming game. I give it a thumbs up as I do like the game. But for the love of steam, please tone the micro down a bit. If they tone it down a bit, I would wholeheartedly support this game.
And to all you spoon thinking people out there: the game gets a thumbs up as it is besides the micro a fun game. it do not deserv a thumbs down IMHO. and since steam has no "meh" button, I went with the thumbs up.
UPDATE: After a patch from the dev, he removed the buy gem messages, and made the buy gems optional in the options menu. Huge pluss. He removed some gem costs for some basic things. also a huge pluss. This is shaping up to be a good little timesink after all :) Continue to do small changes like this dev, and this will become a good game to have fun with :)
Quick review. I'll write a more detailed one later.
Warning it's not so quick. I'd still like to edit this review and give more details later after playing a few more hours.
In short this game is A LOT of fun! I'm an old school dungeon crawler and never liked the cutesy graphics like those of Dungeon Hero RPG, but I gotta say so far I love it! The dungeons can be either user created, or randomly put together so each time the adventure is different. Of course with the actual hand made dungeons you can get more in the way of puzzles and details than in a randomly designed dungeon. Either way, both methods work fine and I had a lot of fun playing tonight.
The game comes with an editor to design your own dungeons and there are multiple skins for the dungeons. Ex: Classic, Prison, Crypts, Castle, etc... I only tinkered with the editor briefly but gotta say it looks very easy to use. I whipped up a quick level layout and placed some basic objects. I really like the ease of use with the editor. Again, I'll try to write a mroe detailed review later.
Now for the one bad point....
You start the game with some gems which you use to purchase heroes, change the name of a hero, or to upgrade weapons, increase the level cap of your hero attributes, and to gain access to larger more dangerous and rewarding dungeons (random dungeons). These gems you can obtain by completing the random dungeons. For example: Small dungeons give 5 gems, medium 7 gems and large I believe grant 10 gems. Now, here is where I am not to fond on gems. Like many Android and iOS games/apps, you can purchase gems with REAL money. To me games like that always ruin the fun. Further, why did I just pay to purchase the game then I have to find out after purchasing the game that my purchase doesn't get me anything but access to the game. If you want in game currency to improve many aspects of your hero, the dungeon, etc... you must have gems and you can either obtain them through game play (slow) or spend REAL money to obtain lots of gems. Some people might not mind this, others like myself may. At least in Dungeon Heroes RPG's defense, they allow you to obtain gems freely by simply playing the game. As mentioned, I'm old school, so I like obtaining my rewards the hard way...by actually earning it, so obtaining gems in game doesn't bother me much. On the other hand the idea that some people can simply purchase many gems for real cash and upgrade their heroes in an instant does bother me. Alas, there doesn't seem to be any real competition between players, so it may be of little consequence.
In closing this is a really fun dungeon crawler and while I personally prefer serious, scary monsters, the cutesy graphics don't really hurt that much. I like the sounds and music as well. Very well done there!
I love the amount of monsters I've encountered so far and hope DLC will be released in the future that adds, new dungeon skins, monsters, and items.
[The Future]
Here are some thoughts on the future for this game.
1. Add the ability to remove the directional arrows on the bottom left of the screen. Currently they are there and the game looks like it is made for touch devices as well as desktop/laptop PCs. I found that my hero would move instead of attacking a target because my cursor was accidentally over the arrow/directional buttons on the screen.
2. Lots of potential for DLC in the form of dungeon skins, monster types, items, pets, spells, etc...
3. Perhaps have some of the random dungeons randomly add a end boss that the hero must beat before he/she can exit the dungeon and claim their gems.
4. This is just my personal wish. Multiplayer! Allow players to host their own dedicated server with their own pre-designed dungeons and then have friends play together, or compete in the dungeon. A High Score table or some such scoreboard would be neat so players can see their score and compare it to other players who have played on that server. AGAIN, this is just my personal wish, the game is currently single player and I doubt it will become multiplayer. Perhaps Dungeon Hero RPG 2 may add multiplayer capability. :)
