As much as I tried to enjoy this game, it is simply Micromanagement hell. I generally like strategy games. I really enjoyed Crusader Kings, Stellaris and so on. This game manages to take simplicity (Very few resources to manage, for example) and create difficulty by making everything need constant attention every moment. It's a bit like trying to turn a hobby into a job, I suppose.
Game is general great, but have few weakness and bugs. Most irrytating thing is disease. No option to eliminate it from game. And its reason why i playing other games more often than Dominions serie.
Despite these flaws, the game is interesting and very complex.

It's got a very messy UI. This often means that you need multiple clicks to get anywhere and the game can be impenatrable without outside sources such as youtube videos or other explanations. Having said that, there is a lot of potential fun here. If it weren't such a god awful experience to interact with the thing it could actually be my all-time go to game.

Alright, so Dominions 5. The legendary, mythological, spreadsheet simulator where you can command demigods, raise nations, and summon horrors from the abyss — but apparently can’t find your own ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wizard because the interface was designed by a blind toddler.
This game oozes potential. The premise? Amazing. The strategic depth? Insane. The charm? Undeniable. But then you try to play it, and you realize the real challange isn’t against rival nations — it’s against the UI, the menus, and your own will to live.
Every single thing you try to do feels like a riddle written by a bureaucrat:
“Oh, you want to move your army? Sure! Just open this submenu… and this submenu… and this subsubmenu… wait, which submenu was that again? Oops, you’ve just cast a national ritual that consumed half your gems. Good luck!”
You’re greeted with numbers. So many numbers. Stats on stats on stats. There are hundreds of units, thousands of spells, and absolutely zero explanation for any of it.
You are facing 30 units of troop type #532.
Cool. What are they? Are they strong? Do they breathe fire? Are they weak to my army of birdmen? The game is just: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So good luck predicting anything in battles. A handful of units can casually vaporize armies ten times their size. You think numbers matter? They don’t. You think tactics matter? They don’t. You think you’ll understand why you lost? You won’t.
And then there’s the busywork. My god, the busywork. Every turn feels like managing a demigod daycare:
– Did you remember to manually search for magic sites on every new province?
– Did you give orders to your 38 armies? (every turn, better not forget where each is located though becase no one will remind you they exist)
– Did you script every mage individually for every possible battle scenario? (again, need to check this every turn)
– Did you manually check if one of your priests has wandered off and started a new religion in the woods because you forgot to assign him orders?
The game gives you no reminders, no automation, no quality-of-life features — nothing. You forget one thing? Boom. Your entire turn’s efficiency tanks. The game expects you to micromanage an empire by hand like it’s the 1990s and your CPU is powered by your lack of purpose in life.
And here’s the kicker: this isn’t some janky Early Access prototype. No, this is Dominions 5. Fifth. FIFTH GAME. As in, they’ve done this four times before, and still somehow went,
“Yeah, this UI feels fine. Ship it.”
Dominions isn’t a game. It’s a commitment. You don’t play it — you endure it. Somewhere beneath the spreadsheet hellscape lies one of the most fascinating 4X strategy games ever made. But you’ll need a second monitor, a notepad, and a personal assistant AI to ever find it.
If some competent user designer took this and turned it into something playable this would be one of the x¤ games out there. But hey, let's shipo the nex tisntamlemt, "Domonion 6", $40, looking EXACTLY LIKE THIS GAME. The devs are just ripping us off, man.
Makes Total War look like Subway Surfers
I'll need over 50 hours to feel confident playing multiplayer against anyone with 1 faction out of the 80 some factions the game has, I've lost or would have lost to normal difficulty ai 9/10 times so far.
a brilliant game for people who want to spend every waking moment thinking about it, there is so much complexity and so many spells and stats and unit abilities to remember, as well as faction abilities and faction spells, you will spend hours reading the wiki searching for answers,, if you want a game to engross yourself in with true depth and thinking required, then I would highly recommend this, got it on sale for $15 as I wasn't sure if I would like it, definitely worth it if you want a total war styled game with true depth and substance
edit: do not join any of the discords to discuss this game or share your opinion on a build that you think is cool if you aren't part of the "ingroup" of mentally ill losers on there, you will never hear the end of it, you will be called a troll for suggesting that your build might be good

ok so you join the reddit dominions server, hang out talk about the game, seems chill right, wrong, a clown from the previous discord will spot you, call you a troll and a misogynist for making a comment about the writing of the factions on a previous discord, completely derailing any conversation, then the other buttbuddies will come in and say you should probably be banned if you said something that offended their sensibilities on another discord
it's actually your fault if you want to defend your opinion on your ideas about the game, or if you don't conform to the extremely narrow worldview of discord and reddit minded people

the funniest part is when I was talkiing about the build I thought was good and had utility, stygian skin bless on yomi faction, everyone dogpiled on me saying that the ethereal form doesn't matter all my ideas were terrible etc, then they called in the resident expert on the discord on yomi I guess, necromage, and he basically agreed with me that the ethereal form is an asset for yomi and not a liability, while literally like over 5 people were nonstop saying that the ethereal form doesnt matter it's useless that I was wrong because I didn't play enough multiplayer etc

tons of fun once you learn the mechanics
This is an excellent strategy game. If you can get past the trashy 1990's graphics there is a beast of a 4x fantasy game underneath. Basically it is what Total War: Warhammer 3 wishes it could be. If you want to play multiplayer with randoms you will have to get the latest version (Dominions 6), but there isn't much change at all between Dominions 3/4/5/6 etc, just a cash grab by the developer. There are literally thousands of Spells, Units, Mages, Commanders, Nations to play all with differant play styles. Very fun if you like choice and 4x.
A lot of effort and knowledge has been poured into this hidden gem. The dev is clearly passionate about old mythologies and religions and has that deep ball knowledge that people themselves from the culture don't know about. There are a ton of factions with infinite methods for strategy and composition. The downside is that you genuinely need to STUDY the game before you play, due to the sheer amount of things to learn.
The real Con that I need to mention is that multiplayer is almost non-existent. You need to join discords and send emails to end your turn and what-not. It is really not worth the hassle. The next iteration in the series, Dom 6, is much more expensive but it is basically the same game.

This is, like the rest of the entries into the Dominions series, a really odd game to try to review despite the fact that it's incredibly fun to play. The graphics are ancient, the gameplay is both detailed and hands off, and what actually happens during a combat is sometimes hard to figure out without doing a significant amount of maths on the fly.
That having been said, I've spent hundreds of hours on this and its predecessors, and will pick up the most recent game once I've finally finished the three matches I have running on this!
If you are the kind of person who likes putting plans into action and watching them play out it's incredibly fun, and although I've only played it vs AI the multiplayer scene is reportedly even better. There's just something indefinably rewarding about watching the right blessings turn merely average sacred troops into unstoppable juggernauts, or when a correctly geared SC wipes out armies of hundreds as they stand awestruck in front of him.
Extra marks for the incredible array of mods out there, and if anyone's struggling to make sense of it all then there's a lot of information out there in LP's, the wiki and manual. It's also really worth turning on the most detailed level of combat report and setting the game to half speed to understand how the values for the various stats actually come together. There are a lot of ways to influence combat and it takes a while to work out if a combatant or situation would benefit from stacking defence or armour or repel, or adding stun or paralysis to reduce incoming attacks, or fear to debuff morale, or....
great depth and lots of wonderful lore
Dominions 5 at first turned me off by the dated graphics, bad UI, etc. But beyond that is a deep and very satisfying strategy game. What is amazing is that even at full price it is worth it, because these developers have never introduced DLC like other studios. There is already so much content in the game that it surpasses even those with lots of DLC that costs $200 (e.g.,Paradox games). $45 is a fair price for all this content because you don't need endless amounts of DLC to get the full game. 900 spells plus all the ways they interact with other things. This game is crazy good and worth it, especially on sale.
it is good but it is not much different than Dominions 3 which I also own...in a way you get to buy a patch or a small DLC for a full price of the game and it does not really motivate me to get the newer ones...

I've played Dominions since 4, the 'series' has increased in price with each game since 3.
Each steam listing isn't for an 'actual' sequel to the last. You're actually paying to continue updating the game. I don't think I've never come across a developer where in order to continue playing an updated version of a game you have to pay more than full price, AFTER you've already paid. it's genuinely baffling.
On the bright side, though, Dominions 4, 5 and 6 have had a max cumulative player count of roughly only 3,400, so I guess Illwinter actively devaluing their own product isn't working out too well.

Definitely one to pick up on special. It's a deeper game than I think I understand so far, and innovative.
Hidden Gem
At the core it is a very good strategy game, but the problem with it is twofold.
The first problem is that the devs are content keeping this game in too much of a sandbox form. They don't seem to realize that most of the fun to be had in this type of game is in optimizing builds given the vast plethora of options. Yet it feels completely pointless to optimize builds when there is absolutely no standardization of maps or modes. So the fact that its too much of a sandbox is an issue. There is absolutely zero incentive for players to be creative to solve a given problem, since they aren't given a problem to solve in the first place. Its a strategy game, so messing around in a sandbox gets old pretty quickly. At some point you're going to want to test out your strategies against other players, but there is no frame or point of reference to even start designing a strategy because there is no map or mode standardization for PVP.
The second issue is the community. You would think that a strategy game that attracts a decent sized community would have already set some standards for PVP, but there doesn't seem to be anything like that here. So in a sense, I would assume that the community of this game is like a bunch of DND neckbeard role play addicts that are content to mess around with toys in their little sandbox, and aren't really that interested in actual PVP, when its literally a strategy game.

This game is good, but it's definitely not for everyone. The thumbs down is because I wanted to like this game more than I did. Some of the hours are just leaving the game online and reading a ton online.
The good;
1) I love it when a game offers more than one character to play as. In a strategic warfare game like this, I like that it offers a big choice of nations to choose from with different units. Each nation has its lore entry and the units have some descriptions to get you into the atmosphere.
2) There are a LOT of magic spells in this game. It's almost too many and it definitely feels overwhelming. But some of the systems are genuinely interesting and unique. Magic includes combat spells, rituals performed outside of combat and forging magic items.
3) A deep system for those interested.
The bad;
1) The interface is absolutely atrocious. It's not just minimalist, it is lacking in a way that I can only understand as laziness or lack of interest from the developers. Clearly it's working for the loyal fan base considering this is the 5th game in the series and there's currently a 6th. The first time I saw how obtrusive managing everything is I was surprised cause it seemed like the kind of flaw an indie on their first game would make, not someone on their 5th game.
2) The learning curve is HIGH. Half the time I've spent "playing" this game is reading the online wiki, the manual or looking up videos online which are very detailed. This might work for some, but I would rather spend it playing. Also, there's absolutely no tutorial to tell you how the game works.
3) I would be willing to overlook the lacking interface, the deep/high learning curve, the lack of a tutorial and the overwhelming systems of magic, but the thing that kind of makes me stop playing the game is how "dry" it is. When you play in single player there's a lore entry for the nation you play as, and there's a generic victory text that's the same for all nations. That's it. There's nothing in-between, no specific victory text for any nation or for the diety you play as. It's pretty much a digitized board game with some graphics.
Is this game bad? No, I wouldn't say so. It's clearly flawed by modern-gaming standards, but it's deep and there's a lot of attention paid here along with a great and interesting magic system. But it's absolutely not for everyone. I'm not upset that I got it because I got it for real cheap. I'm hoping in the future a Dominions game is released that's much more accessible and inviting.
Oh, by the way. Dominions 6 is -by most accounts- merely an updated Dominions 5, so I'm not expecting much soon.
Dominions somehow merges the horror and brutality of large-scale warfare between primordial entities with the mundane drudgery of managing a huge excel spreadsheet.

you'd have thought by the 5th iteration of the game, you could play with a friend through steam by pressing 'join game'.. like every other multiplayer game this platform hosts.. without port forwarding, having to share IP addresses, or or going through some dodgy guy's 15 year old llama website.

This is a great game series, one of a kind. I'm not really a fan of how the authors monetize the game by releasing a new numbered part, instead of upgrading the previous one. That makes a lot of community effort obsolete, mainly maps and conversion mods. On the other hand, it gives them a freedom to change major mechanics without breaking compatibility. It's better than DLC's, I guess... Still saddens me, that the 5th part with its great main menu music will never be "The actual Dominions game" ever again.
Buy Dominions 6 instead of this, it's a straight up upgrade. But at least listen to the 5th soundtrack on Youtube. It shouldn't be forgotten.
A unique take on the 4X genre, focused just about exclusively on combat. All tactics have to be predetermined in the army setup screen, the battles are resolved automatically between turns without any player input so you have to make sure your soldiers and mages have all of their orders set up just right.
The mechanics aren't terribly complex but the sheer amount of options you have is unparalleled. Hundreds of unit types, dozens of factions, a plethora of spells and magic items. It really shines in multiplayer where you interact with all of the systems, the singleplayer AI is decent but doesn't experiment much with the magic system so you can abuse that to beat it even on harder difficulties.
The price can seem a bit steep for such an old game, and you may want to buy the next release instead if you're paying full price. But if you like 4X or grand strategy, this is well worth picking up, especially on sale.

Game crashed to black screen the first 3 times I tried to start a game. Not even during game loading or anything, just crashed during various points I was trying to allocate my points. The menu - the only part of this pos that I actually got to experience - was atrocious.

If you don´t have the cognitive capacity to fall in love with Dominions, fine, just start the game, close your eyes and listen to the music that on it´s own is reason enough to invest in this masterpiece of a game.
Main fault of this game is that the information of why you loose is not shown through the game. You have to nerd on forums a ton. Flying is a joke. Moral is all. 50 troops can beet 500 by killing 40 and making the 500 have moral-break. What a joke.

lots of complexity, but I love playing around with making my own nations and modding units in it.
Definitely one of the most fun strategy games to play, with basically infinite replay value. Compared to dominions 4 it adds various new playable factions. On top of it all, mods can also be used to increase factions. These add even more variations to the game. Overall, the simplicity allows for smooth gameplay, while its complex nature and many possibilities are fun to explore. The lore of each kingdom makes learning about each factions attributes fun, while also giving unique gameplay and strategies to explore.
This one is also ok I guess.
The Dominions series is an extremely detailed strategy series, unlike any other I have come across. Taking elements from 4x, grand strategy and RPG's, Dominions' wide roster of nations sports an astounding number of units and spells, and each has it's own carefully crafted lore spread across three ages of history; a high-fantasy world, where strategy is open-ended and deep. Single-player is fun on it's own, but the meat of this game comes from it's competitive and dedicated multiplayer community.
As Dominions 6 has just been released, most multiplayer matches will now be moving over to the new game.
Fantastic game in a fantastic series. If you're reading this and think you might like these games, buy the newest one, they always just keep improving with each iteration.
Grand Strategy Game with geopolitics aspects.
A game in which you always feel like a frog in a well. 200 hours and I still don’t feel like I’ve even become a beginner!
Deep and complex with high bar to entry. But once you start to get a hang of it you will find there is nothing like it on the market.
This is not a good game. I can accept the graphics but controls are very counter-intuitive and outright bad (select with right click and move with left, action by using left click then space, tooltip with rigth click,...) and the game is lacking a lot of quality of life features, like list (of characters, of regions, of everything) or being able to select a spell or an item and then choosing the mage that will forge or cast it (the reserve is laborious).
Yet this game is also fascinating, 4X tends to be clone of either Civilization, Total War, Heroes of Might and Magics, whatever Paradox game or Master of Orion. Truly original 4X are very rare and this game is one of them. One play as a would-be god of one of many unique civilization, usually historical civilization as depicted in Pulp Sci-Fi, if you like Pulp, you will love this game.
The game as a huge amount of depth and one can spent one hour playing each turn struggling with the interface, or just be OK with missing 90% of the complexity and spending 5 minutes per turn (with a little nerfing the AI, this is playing with handicap) and that is still very fun, but probably not 40€ worth of fun.
So while I recommend this game because I loved the theme and originality it is too expensive full price for anyone not wanting to spend thousand of hours fighting the interface.
The worst UI ever made? Most likely not, but close. Yes I am not willing to spend 10 hours watching videos to learn basics, key shortcuts and how to micromanage 50 armies.
The fact there is no visual difference between territory where is your general and where not is for me mind blowing. Playing on a big map controlling big portion of the map, happy clicking through all territories to find where are your generals to be able to move armies to the front. Crazy, non working, tedious design.
The turn summary is a joke, you need to remember name of every territory to be able to understand where the battle occurred. Learn some basic UI common practices and move away from your bubble of fanboys.
An academic paper in the form of a game. I like the asynchronous turn management, I also like the way battle works with scripting actions.

It seems to have held my attention...
I would definitely recommend to any hardcore strategy fans, but DON'T BUY RIGHT NOW. Dominions 6 is out in a couple of weeks.
