Storyline

Things were going well for Azra, the sheltered Royal Librarian. There were books to sort, dust, and put away, important royal documents to transcribe. All this was swept away by the deadly plague that devastated the Kingdom of Ash. The plague killed quickly, so quickly that no one has the time to bury the dead, instead they are thrown, without ceremony, into the Pit. Azra, infected with the plague, is cast into the Pit. Soon, she finds herself in the Half-Way World, the place between life and death and learns of her true power--that of being able to bring anyone into the Half-Way World with her. Now, she must traverse the Pit in the hopes of finding the cause of the plague and must fight to not only save herself but the Kingdom as well.

This game does nothing but crash. No it isn't my computer read other reviews and go to the forums. It's a fun game, seriously it would be probably the best tower defense ever made but the developer eventually gave up trying to fix the crashes after patching it many times and moved on.

I've never seen a game crash this much before in my life and it doesn't auto save in the middle of a round. I can't complete this challenge because it won't stop crashing before the level completes. I want to rate a fun game as positive but the crashing is out of control.

tl;dr Despite the now frequent crashes in the DX edition, you should get it if it's on sale and you like a tower defense genre game with a good story.

I'll be honest, I couldn't even tell you when I got this game. Probably circa 2012 when it came out and I was really into tower defense games. Add a good story and female protag to that and I'm hooked. Recently came back to it because I saw the second one had released and I sunk like 7 hours of my day into this. It's crashing every hour or so, which is new, and I'm certainly not feeling particularly completionist on this go around which can get really grind-y as I recall, but I'm really enjoying the story and dialogue and gameplay all over again, so I'll definitely be seeing it through to the end in any case. For (probably) $15 I've gotten nearly 40 hours of enjoyment out of this game and by the time I finish this playthrough (and possibly the NG+ on this save file, we'll see) I'll probably be closer to 50. The last movie that I saw that was worth $15 was Iron Lung, and that was only like 3 hours of movie, so I'd say this one is worth it.

一見すると、海外のカートゥーンアニメのような軽いノリのグラフィックに見えるだろう。
だが、その中身は驚くほどオールドスクールかつ硬派な戦略ゲームだ。一般的なTDでは「木の矢倉」や「大砲」を建てるが、本作では「剣士のスラク」や「弓使いのケレブ」といった名前のある仲間を配置する。

このシステムが実に巧みだ。
ただの設備なら壊されてもまた建てればいいが、彼らは旅を共にする仲間であり、レベルアップや装備変更でカスタマイズしていく「俺だけのユニット」だ。手塩にかけて育てた前衛職（タンク）が敵のラッシュを一人で食い止め、後衛の魔法使いが画面全体を焼き払う「無双」ぶりを発揮し始めた時、プレイヤーは彼らに深い愛着と頼もしさを感じるようになる。

RPGの「育成の喜び」と、TDの「戦略の快感」が見事に噛み合っており、気づけばこのコミカルな絵面が最高にカッコよく見えてくるはずだ。

・ストーリーの脚本が非常に優秀。ユーモアとシリアスのバランスが良く、クリア後には仲間たちへの愛着が湧くように設計されている。
・倍速機能やオート配置などの快適機能が充実しており、周回プレイやレベル上げのストレスが少ない。

【BAD】
・[b]アートスタイルの好みが分かれる。[/b] 西洋インディー特有のクセのある絵柄（特に顔の描写）は、日本の萌え系や精細なドット絵に慣れていると最初は抵抗があるかもしれない。
・後半になるとユニットが強くなりすぎて、配置しただけで敵が溶けていく「放置ゲー」になりがちで、序盤のようなギリギリの戦略性は薄れる。
・エフェクトが派手になるにつれて画面がごちゃごちゃし、誰がどこで何をしているのか視認性が悪くなる瞬間がある。

中规中矩，二周目 new game+ (简称 ng+) 剩下的内容或许会补完。

游戏机制是在最传统的塔防上扩充：
6 种守护者(塔)，有着局外经验等级，可以解锁和强化技能。战斗中可能被敌人攻击和杀死，但不像 KR 兵营可以阻挡敌人，还是站在路边输出的。有武器和防具槽各一个，一周目只能强化数值，ng+ 可以提供其他特性。主线角色外还可以招募同职业守护者，相当于每种塔至多 6 座。
主角 Azra (老家) 可以释放技能，消耗的是与造塔相同的资源，局外经验等级可以强化技能，有 2 个魔法书槽，可以进一步强化技能或提供某些全局效果。

初见体验其实还不错，美术和演出虽然有些简陋，但不失趣味。特殊关卡和 boss 战也各有特色。可默认的100%经验金钱下，战斗中的塔防策略，还不如在稳赢的关卡多刷几盘局外资源来得直接。如果开到最高的 300% (官方推荐在 heroic+ 模式这样做，每种塔限一座且完成 ng+)，就一路砍瓜切菜了。ng+ 打了大半的部分依然是这种感觉，尽管敌人数值和机制都大幅强化，局外资源领先就是碾压，落后就怎么都过不了。

不推荐主要是因为，游戏软体本身的问题。默认设置下频繁崩溃 (修改能改善许多)，在修改某些设置后无限弹控制台卡死，战斗中敌人过多游戏速度会变慢；似乎还有储存泄漏，打完敌人多的关卡后，继续玩其他的，也会更卡更易崩溃。如果不是出于一些原因非得玩它，最好还是别被这种事折磨。

This was a hard yet rewarding game. It has an action packed storyline, which keeps you playing the game and trying levels again and again.
However, the game has some mature stuff in it, for example literal WALKING DEAD PEOPLE, so maybe don't play this game with a five-year-old. But its not that scary, and the characters are really funny.

This is one of my, if not THE, favorite tower defense games on Steam, and I would really recommend a purchase.
...if it wasn't for one single MASSIVE problem.
It crashes. Frequently.
My God, it seems to crash as much as a Bethesda game.

The characters are lovable, the story is interesting, the gameplay is solid.
But it still crashes a lot.

Something happened during the release of DX that every now and then I get a "null pointer" crash.
Doesn't matters if I am in a battle, in a cutscene, in the map, in a shop, in the 100th wave of survival, on the last 5% of the last boss health.
It just crashes.

The DX update didn't do much to the game. They redrew the character art (losing some of the charm) and added a smoothing filter over the pixel art (making everything look like blurred ink smears).

I still had a laugh with the characters, the story, the comments and really enjoyed the gameplay, going as far as replay the game in hero mode (unique characters only), only for it to CONSTANTLY crash on the last boss when I am almost done with it.

I tried changing settings, returning to old graphics, reducing quality, reducing screen size. NOTHING fixes it.

Considering this game is 13 years old as of this review, I don't expect this to get fixed.
Which truly is a shame.

What a fun tower defense game with a well-written story behind each mission. The music and graphic style are a plus. You start out coasting through on easy difficulty. Agonize over ideal placement of your units. Then to progress, you need to improve your army with resources and XP gained to replay missions on harder difficulty.

Defender's Quest es un juego indie, de tipo Tower Defense, bastante entretenido. Sin más.
En él nos adentraremos en un mundo medieval donde todo ser viviente está siendo zombificado y nos veremos en la obligación de salvar al mundo de su trágico destino mientras nos enfrentamos a todas las hordas de no muertos que nos salen al paso, que no serán pocas.
Gráficamente se aprecia un tanto amateur, pero es aceptable. No es digna de mención, pero tampoco penaliza en la nota final.
A nivel de banda sonora, se muestra al mismo nivel aceptable. Algo repetitiva, pero no se siente molesta.
La jugabilidad es, quizás, el punto fuerte del título. Con una dificultad bien nivelada, que te permitirá avanzar mientras vas mejorando (e incrementando en número) tu ejército, en una curva creciente de dificultad. Además, entre fase y fase encontraremos la narrativa de la historia. Una narrativa que se aprecia muy trabajada y con un toque de humor bastante logrado.
Su durabilidad es notable. Con 30 niveles en el modo normal, y 37 niveles en el modo plus (además de los niveles de bonus para desbloquear libros de habilidades), tendremos más de 45 horas aseguradas. Sin embargo, en mi caso, a partir de las 20 horas se me empezó a hacer demasiado repetitivo por no aportar nada nuevo.
Al final, estamos ante un juego entretenido, y poco más. Merece el aprobado, pero está muy lejos de ser un imprescindible dentro del catálogo de Steam.

But there are quite a few bugs, including frequent crashes during gameplay and a missing Stone Skull
(even though I’ve already obtained 201 gold stars), which prevented the achievement from unlocking.
However, I managed to fix it by editing the save file.

TL;DR Yes if you are looking for a casual fun tower defense experience, warning if you are a completionist:

A fun RPG tower defense to sink some time into. There's lots to learn and enjoy with character skill trees, unique weapons and armor, and even many secrets! I had a great time progressing and everything felt smooth right up until the 195/201 gold star range. This is where this game gets INCREDIBLY finnicky. There are 2 amazing steam guides to get you 2 of these stars but all of the obsidian skull levels are very serious. You will be playing on 1/4x speed with 6 of each class that have to have perfect skills and placement. I found this pretty tedious, and if I didn't have those guides I would have given up for sure. Just a heads up that near the end of the game you will be spending more time building your party on your party menu than actually playing the game xD

Voy a ser sincera, no me gustan los Tower Defense. Pero Defender's Quest, ya sea por la mezcla RPG con componente táctico, su historia, y su estética, me enganchó desde el primer momento.

Tras haberlo completado al 100%, y haberle echado casi 70 horas, he podido ver sus cosas buenas, pero también sus cosas malas (que las tiene, tampoco es perfecto).

Como cosas buenas tiene que el "Juego Base" está muy bien equilibrado; puedes notar la progresión, y jugar bien te recompensa. Digamos que aprieta, pero no ahoga. Y si es demasiado difícil, el jueguito viene con opciones de accesibilidad para que sea disfrutable por todes.

Como cosas malas, el modo "Juego+" (que se desbloquea al completar el "Juego Base"), sobre todo si tu intención es completarlo al 100%. No es que sea difícil, es injusto; no solo los enemigos vienen con habilidades rotísimas, sino que lo normal que dipliquen, incluso tripliquen el nivel de tus héroes. Es como que quisieron que este modo fuese más desafiante y se pasaron (bastante) de vueltas, y un juego divertido se convierte a un juego de tener que estar farmeando para subir nivel, que para mí es aburrido. Incluso ajustando las opciones de accesibilidad a tope, sigue dando muchos problemas.

En fin, que es un juego muy recomendable, y creo que te encantará tanto si te gustan los Tower Defense, como los RPG, como los de Estrategia. Una mezcla muy bien hecha.

十几年前的老塔防游戏，总体还算比较有特色，只想通关的话流程很短，大概3个小时就能打完，
但是游戏存在较多的刷子元素，二周目英雄模式以及满星星的挑战也比较有难度，想打完全部内容需要不少时间。

不过由于是比较老的游戏，游戏程序设计比较简单，游戏各种数据以及成就数据都是作为文件单独存在的，可以很简单的进行编辑，如果想取巧打全成就的话可以直接手动修改

Probably the best tower defense game ever made. A fun story with named party members who have dialogue but you can still bolster your force with hired mercenaries. You can buy equipment and spend skill points to level up your dudes plus your main character that's basically a fancy spell caster. 5/5 game and S tier once in a life time tower defense.

Reviewing after coming back to this a decade later; this was a great example of how narrative design and game design can make for something special, even using old tech and without a AAA budget. I wish publishers would realize that, even if they are making their primary cash of iterative titles (yet another shooter or sports clone), when they are funding more unique projects, they don't need to repeat what's been done before. They should instead empower developers to bring their passion projects to an audience.

I'm disappointed in this game. I expected more from a title with 95% positive reviews. It's a mediocre tower defense game, offering typical TD mechanics with little innovation. The only unique feature is the healing mechanic, where enemies can damage your towers, and a special tower can heal them.

The RPG elements are shallow as well. There are only two types of items—armor and weapons—but they lack interesting effects. All items merely add a bonus to attack or defense. The "skill tree" offers generic buffs like "+1% damage," so there aren't any engaging decisions or builds to explore.

While the game isn't bad, it certainly doesn't deserve a 95% rating.

Unfortunately, the biggest downside of revisiting this game in 2025 is its technical shortcomings on modern systems. The resolution is capped at 1080p, which feels limiting given today's standard display capabilities. More frustratingly, the game suffers from stability issues, with multiple crashes that sometimes resulted in lost progress. Fullscreen mode simply did not work for me, forcing me to play in windowed mode. These issues significantly hinder the experience and stand out as the most frustrating part of playing the game today.

[h3]Writing, Art, and Music[/h3]
Despite its technical problems, the presentation holds up remarkably well. The writing and art style remain as appealing as they were at launch, with the smooth animations for units standing out as an impressive feat both then and now. The ability to completely skip the story is a fantastic option, allowing for streamlined replays or catering to those who simply prefer to focus on gameplay. Dialogue can be auto-skipped in the options menu, which is a thoughtful feature that more games should adopt. Additionally, the soundtrack is excellent, with clear effort put into how each track fits into different scenarios and levels.

While this seems like a convenience, it actually feels like an integral part of the balance rather than an optional boost. Without it, progression becomes tedious, requiring excessive grinding to overcome difficulty spikes. It’s a baffling design choice—if the game is better balanced around increased XP gain, why not make it the default?

The RPG and tower defense hybrid mechanics also create an uneven experience. While strategic unit placement matters, battles ultimately hinge on whether your party has sufficient stats from leveling up and equipping better gear. This leads to an inconsistent difficulty curve where players either breeze through encounters or hit grinding roadblocks. The game leans more toward being a grind-heavy RPG than a pure tower defense or tactical RPG, despite how it labels itself. It’s not necessarily bad, but it does result in an inconsistent campaign experience.

One of the game’s better mechanics is its unit progression system, where characters level up and gain skill points for their respective trees. While these trees could offer more meaningful choices—many upgrades are obvious best picks—it’s still satisfying to refine and enhance each class’s strengths.

The game also offers substantial replay value through its New Game Plus mode, which introduces additional quests and items while increasing difficulty. Interestingly, players will switch between the regular and NG+ modes to break through difficulty plateaus, creating a unique back-and-forth gameplay loop that dedicated players will likely enjoy.

Witty dialog, not-bad story, pretty good tower defense mechanics. The progression & unlocks are decently paced - it's very grindy if you play with the default rewards, but you can also scale them up by just changing a setting (I highly recommend 300% rewards). There's a lot of room to replay maps and master them at insane difficulties, but I didn't make it that far.

My fav tower defense of all time, and its not even close. Everything about this game is good from the mechanics the level design to the story. My only complaint is that, like any game with RPG mechanics, a lot of the challenge can be eliminated by simply being overleveled, but the RPG mechanics are a huge part of what makes this game so special. DQ2 is finally coming out in 6 days, so if you're interested in this definitely check that out as well.

I played this for the first time many years ago and was thrilled to find it on steam. As a TD lover, I appreciated the gameplay and the mechanics. However, there is more to this game. The game unfolds along an extremely well written story. Funny dialogues, actually correct grammar :)) and I also like the character design. Just get it!

I bought this game a while back and returned to find all sorts of updates, improvements, and new additions to the game, Highly recommended.

It's a tower defense game, but with a fantastic fantasy RPG twist involving stats, equipment, special powers, flexible tech trees, and of course.. grind.. but in a good way. That all aside, the music and story are top notch, and plenty of secrets to unlock and tweak your lineup with. If the above sounds good to you, then that's all you need to know--- just play the game.

I like it. I like the story, I like the maps, I like the difficulty, I like the New Game +, I like the characters, I like the art style. Sure, it could be improved a bit here or there, but if you like tower defense it's worth a try, I suppose. I could have sworn I'd already upvoted this, but it doesn't seem like it. Great game! Great if bored and just want something to play on the go casually, but you can get into the loop and spend hours! The only reason I am writing this review is because at one point they ask if you want to like their socials, and if you say no, they still give you the reward and you engage in funny dialogue, thats the right attitude!

К сожалению есть пара минусов.
1. Не полностью переведена на русский
2. Вылиты. Вот это главный минус. В одной игре (новая игра +) из-за вылета мне не дали черепа. В итоге чтобы открыть все достижения пришлось заново все проходить(и все равно читал сюжет повторно с удовольствием).
Если вам нравится РПГ и "Tower Defense с неплохим сюжетом то рекомендую.
PS Брал по скидке.

Last update broke mods, you can't even see the workshop from inside the game.

Edit: DO. NOT. BUY. THIS. GAME

As of February 2026, the interface has been downgraded to ASSININE levels,

Workshop does not work, and that has been the case FOR YEARS.

You need to manually install mods if you want to use them, the entire process is mindboggling stupid,

In order to use mods, you need to manually download them from the workshop, find the folder where that happened, copy the mods and move them to the custom mod folder, or download the mods from third party websites.

You load a set of mods, that requires restarting the game, this restart will reset all your settings, including video and audio settings, once you load this set of mods, you need to create a new game, because the old save is not compatible.

if you want to load, or unload, a mod to the set of mods, you lose not just your save file, but all of your settings.

And that is when it works, because there is a random null point reference mod that pops up on the background, you need to alt+tab to find the error window to click on it, and that closes the game altogether.

This is my favorite tower defense game of all time, and it's difficult to pin down exactly why. I was surprised at how well I enjoyed the world that this built, the characters that inhabited it, and the story that played. They were charming, not mind-blowing, but fun and gave enough investment from map to map to care about what was going on. I liked the mechanics, not obtuse or complex, but also not simple, with a lot of strategies being viable while still requiring a lot of planning and thought and, when it comes to spells, occasionally reflexes. I enjoyed the clarity of the art: you always knew exactly what was happening where, and when something went wrong, it was easy to identify and try to fix. I liked building up my party with experience and skill trees and equipment, they weren't annoyingly complicated, but there was enough there that it made each character interesting. The game is lightweight, and easy to pick up and put down without much in the way of time investment needed for any given session. It's a lot of "good" that blends together into a very nice "great," and I personally loved this game. I like that the barbarian looks kind of like Dan Avidan.
