is cool it kind of feels like a flash game that got a bigger budget in a good way art style is nice and the story is interesting but here comes to problem it's both hardcore experience and story driven game and you immediately feel it going against each other. if one of your four main characterist die there are no talking about how to deal with it there are no story about it you just get a game over which is annoying . but if you have characters there are not main characters you can obviously let them die and nothing really happens which be as weird because this game has a lot of stories to be told but it's like it can't decide if it wants that hardcore permadeth experience or that linear story-driven one it does not do the things good at the same time if you ask me . but the game isn't bad I will give it a 6 out of 10 it can improve if it can figure it out what it wants to be . buy it when it's on sale it also have some DLC which I don't know why it need that feels confusing

I haven't played the other Dead In games, but I really like this one, especially that the characters are multi-dimensional. It's pretty challenging and I haven't gotten very far because characters keep offing themselves, but every playthrough gets better and the dog is worth every penny. Highly recommend if you're into the strategy/resource management genre with a bit of turn based combat now and then.

Very unique game! The character interactions are the highlight of the game.
A lot of reviews talk about bad RNG, but the game is a lot more forgiving then it seems. The RNG is totally fine and makes Dead in Vinland very interesting

I survived 24 days, soon I ran out of food (had to give 30 anyways), and everybody died of depression or injury. Not sure what order I should have built my buildings but I couldn't get enough stone (so couldn't research fas enough)...anyways I'm in Hel now and wondering if I should suffer another play through.

the rng doesn't suit it well especially on true viking with extreme conditions it doesn't make the game "more difficult" just makes you reset the day multiple times so you can have a chance otherwise even consulting the wiki for best choices and stuff won't make you beat it without luck

as for the other difficulties they aren't hard but still the rng isn't very well made somethings are cool to have it others aren't

This game is a real challenge when it comes to surviving on the island, and that challenge is what makes it so engaging. The randomness of whether something succeeds or fails in the forest adds even more tension and difficulty. The relationships between the characters, who likes whom and who doesn’t, are also an interesting part of the gameplay. A big plus for the DLCs as well, especially the one with the dog 🐶.

Good survival management game, close to Thea & Expeditions series. It gives you a lot of choice in a way you want to do things, also contains many interesting custom-written, not generic, characters who interact not only with the player but with other companions you recruit too.

I recommend playing on Survival + True Viking (Ironman) difficulty always - only this way can you feel joy in games like this. I don't get people who are savescumming survival games, what is the fun in that?

This could be a good management / turn based fighting game, if the game designer didn't hate all of the players!!!

There are some really obnoxious game design decisions that makes most of the fights really unenjoyable. On the other hand all of the game's mechanics are heavily stablished on randomness, but somehow the game's algorithm (behind the screen) most of the time gives you the worst outcome. for instance if your character is supposed to deal 1-11 damage, 50% of the time it deals 1 damage!

If you decide to go for this game, be ready for billions of save/load due to super punishing game design and randomness algorithm, because honestly that is what you are doing most of the time in the game!!!

Too much RNG.

Character traits are RNG. You can roll a character at the start with objectively bad traits on useful stats.

Loot is RNG. Sometimes you get more, sometimes, less, it depends on the stat of the character doing the labor but even with two characters of the same stat can yield slightly different results.

Levelling up is RNG. Every time you level up your character is presented with 5 random traits to pick from, which may range from useful to useless to straight up bad.

Events have RNG. There are skill / stat checks, stats increase your chances of course, but again it's not always guaranteed. You can send a high Agility character to do an Agility task and still fail.

Enemy Encounters are RNG.

Combat is RNG (Miss / Dodge, Min - Max Dmg, etc...).

And your characters occasionally get random debuffs out of nowhere. Like your character fetching water has a chance of getting ticks, or your craftsman breaking his fingers. When and why these happen? They just do.

Overall, there are too many unreliable variables in the game.
Each isn't game breaking on its own, but all together, it makes for a very unfun experience that feels like it's more a game of luck rather than a game of resource management.

The game's idea of a challenge is throwing as many rigged dies at you at random times.

Dead In Vinland is one of the most intelligent survival management games I’ve ever played, blending survival mechanics with deep strategic decision‑making and rich character drama. From the moment you and your clan wash up on that unforgiving shore, every choice feels meaningful, and every day feels like a test of skill and resourcefulness.

The survival mechanics are exceptionally well‑designed. You must manage food, shelter, energy, and morale — each one demanding careful thought and prioritisation. Sending settlers to hunt, gather, or rest isn’t just a task; it’s a strategic decision that has consequences. You’re constantly balancing immediate needs against long‑term well‑being, and that tension makes every success feel earned.

Character systems in this game are phenomenal. Every settler has skills, traits, and emotional states that influence their performance and relationships with others. Watching personalities clash, form bonds, and impact your survival strategy adds emotional depth you don’t usually see in resource sims. You genuinely care about who you send on missions because their survival matters.

The exploration and narrative elements elevate the experience even further. The world hides mysteries, threats, and opportunities that make venturing beyond camp both rewarding and risky. Story events are engaging, often surprising, and force you to make hard choices that shape not only your survival but the tone of your campaign.

Dead In Vinland’s mechanics and storytelling work together beautifully. Resource crunches feel tense, character arcs feel personal, and every run feels unique because your decisions don’t just affect numbers — they affect people.

Ich habs durchgespielt und etliche Stunden versenkt. Hat es Spaß gemacht? Beim ersten Mal ist direkt ein Charakter gestorben, weil mir das Spiel nicht erklärt hat, dass ich ohne bestimmte Gebäude einfach gar nicht überleben kann. Ok, Lerneffekt. Neustart. Irgendwann am Anfang stirbt Moira, weil ich bei einer Probe mit 90% Erfolgswahrscheinlichkeit 4 mal hintereinander gescheitert bin. Ohne den großen Statistiker raushängen zu lassen, aber die Wahrscheinlichkeit so zu scheitern liegt bei 0,1^4, also 0,01%. Aha. Da Moira ein Familienmitglied ist, scheitert das ganze Game direkt. Ok, hat mir auch keiner Gesagt (und nach Story mögen die sich noch nicht mal alle). Also letzten Spielstand am Tag vorher geladen und Probe nochmal gemacht.

Generell, wie oft Dinge mit 80%+ Wahrscheinlichkeit hier scheitern kommt mir stark seltsam vor. Das führt dazu, dass ich bestimmte Dinge hinterher immer am Tagesanfang gemacht habe und wenn sie gescheitert sind (oder zuoft gescheitert sind) ich den Spielstand neu geladen habe und es sooft probiert habe es geklappt hat. Ist sicher nicht im Sinne des Spiels, macht auch keinen Spaß, aber anders ging es nicht.

Gleiches gilt für die Kämpfe. Beim Erkunden wird man mit einer gewissen Prozentzahl entdeckt und muss dann kämpfen (auch hier gefühlt häufiger als es Statistisch passieren sollte). Verletzt sich ein Charakter, verliert also generell Lebenspunkte (über die Rüstung hinausgehend) kann er sich verletzen, also steigert sich sein Verletztheitswert und er bekommt vielleicht eibe 'Verletzung' verpasst, die in dann für kommende Kämpfe einschränkt. Also Lazarett bauen, Heilpflanzen sammeln, Heilitems einsetzen (die auch wieder mit Wahscheinlichkeit arbeiten; ebenfalls wieder mehrfach passiert, dass eine 75%-Erfolgswahrscheinlichkeit 6 mal hintereinander nicht eingetreten ist und meine Heilitems aufgebraucht waren, also neu geladen, nochmal probiert, gähn).

Besondere Kämpfe gegen Egill oder Björn zb. funktionieren zudem nur, wenn man 2 oder 3 Beserker im Team hat, da diese Bossfights mit Schadensresistenzen von bis zu +4 arbeiten, sodass normale Figuren einfach 0 Schaden machen. Beserke haben einen Angriff, der Verhältnismäßig hohen Schaden macht, aber auch nur mit 60-80% Chance trifft (in echt also so 2-10%). Das Bosskämpfe so funktionieren, weiß man natürlich vorher nicht. Da man in seiner Hütte nur begrenzt Platz hat, kann es also passieren, dass man die Beserker, so man sie den auf der Karte gefunden hat, nicht aufnehmen kann und entweder die Hütte ausbauen muss (was wieder Ressourcengrind bedeutet) oder aber einen vorhanden Charakter (der nicht zur Familie gehört) sterben lassen muss (was natürlich wieder alle Depressiv macht und ich eigentlich auch nicht wollte storytechnisch) damit Platz in der Hütte frei wird. Oder man geht so weit in den Speicherständen zurück, dass man gleich den Berserker aufnimmt und spielt dann die letzten 10.-20 Stunden nochmal.

Wirklich kein gutes Spiel. Nur die Story und Szenario fand ich gut genug um weiterzuspielen, Hab dann den Sound ausgemacht und Podcast gehört weil das ewige Holzhacken sonst zu öde wird und non-stop einheitsgedudel im Hintergrund läuft. Kurz vor Ende hab ich dann noch gesehen, dass ein DLC existiert damit die Charaktere untereiander (losgelöst von der Startfamilie) miteiander interagieren. Kannst du dir nicht ausdenken.

Dead in Vinland – идейный наследник Dead in Bermuda, только вместо современного мира игра начинается за семью викингов в эпоху раннего средневековья с элементами фэнтези.

Игра затянула меня с головой. Я провела в ней десятки часов, выстраивая быт, сражаясь и переживая за свою виртуальную общину. Но, как ни странно, рекомендовать ее к покупке не могу. [i]Почему?[/i] Потому что это работа, за которую вам не всегда заплатят эндорфинами.

Обо всём по порядку

[b]Персонажи и Дом-2 у костра[/b]
Герои проработаны и прописаны очень хорошо. У каждого своя история, черты, способности и, что важно, свое отношение к соседям по несчастью. В конце каждого дня все собираются у костра, где мы потихоньку узнаем ребят и наблюдаем за развитием их отношений.
[spoiler]Иногда мы можем подталкивать их к определенным действиям, влияя на статы.[/spoiler]
Местами это довольно интересно и неожиданно, но коммуникации между участниками довольно мало, из-за чего ты далеко не сразу всех узнаешь. Я даже на 136-й игровой день не знала всех подробностей, что очень досадно. Мне кажется, было бы неплохо, если бы могли возникать случайные, но имеющие значение диалоги – к примеру, от совместной деятельности в первой/второй половине дня. Это бы лучше погрузило во всю драму и тяжесть совместного бытия.

[b]Сюжет[/b]
Честно, я чуть не забыла упомянуть сюжет. Он здесь есть, и он даже интересный.
[spoiler]Оказывается, что все наши герои – потомки богов, и только поэтому они попали на этот остров.[/spoiler]
Это было интересно узнать, но проблема в том, что ты 80% времени занят фармом ресурсов и выживанием. Из-за этого ты живешь моментом, вникаешь в текущие диалоги, а глобальная нить сюжета теряется – особенно если делаешь перерывы в игре из-за дискомфорта. Возвращаешься и уже не помнишь, что там глобально происходит. Просто хочешь победить Бьёрна, чтобы жить спокойно.
Концовка зависит от твоих решений. :)

[b]Атмосфера и сеттинг[/b]
Музыкальное сопровождение отличное. Арт-дизайн очень хороший. Лагерь обустраивается красиво, скандинавская мифология – всегда плюс к атмосфере. Нашим жителям предстоит встреча с мифическими тварями и даже богами. Однако взаимодействие с наивысшими сводится к...
[spoiler]…примитивной схеме: найди-принеси-убей-поторгуй.[/spoiler]
Хотелось бы большего участия богов в судьбе лагеря.

[b]Обустройство лагеря и боль перфекциониста[/b]
Улучшение лагеря – основа выживания. Новые постройки и дополнения к старым увеличивают добычу сырья и кол-во помощников, облегчают работу и, в принципе, жизнь на этом острове. Только вот отстройка требует очень много ресурсов, и это не считая всеми любимого Элофа[spoiler](чувака, собирающего дань)[/spoiler].
К моменту, когда ты полностью обустроишь лагерь, игра уже заканчивается и по сюжету, и по ресурсности острова. Даже овечки мои…скончались.
И самое обидное – ачивки за полный апгрейд нет.

[b]Прокачка и менеджмент[/b]
Глубина нюансов меня поразила.
Важно учитывать: состояние острова и открытых локаций; жизненные показатели основных и второстепенных персонажей, их получаемые черты, способности, навыки, временные состояния; погодные условия. Это все очень круто. Пусть поначалу может и озадачить, но очень интересно и хорошо вовлекает в процесс.
Как ни странно, здесь и обратная сторона медали с тем, что игра ошибок не прощает. Неудачно раскачали персонажа – будете мучиться. Лучше заранее определить для себя направленность действующих лиц: боевка, крафт, добыча, важные переговоры и т.д.

[b]Боевка как новшество[/b]
По сравнению с Бермудой добавили полноценные пошаговые бои и классы для сражений, которых предостаточно[spoiler]( прокачкой лагеря можно будет выставлять до трех бойцов)[/spoiler]
Но битвы очень долгие и порой нудные. Чтобы их хоть как-то ускорить, нужно копаться в настройках интерфейса. Честно, я об этом даже не знала. Было бы славно, если бы кнопка ускорения была прямо на боевом экране, а не где-то в глубине раздела геймплея.
Отдельная боль – пальцы Бьёрна[spoiler](мини-боссы)[/spoiler]
Сражения с некоторыми довольно выматывающие и ресурсозатратные, так что даже на «приятном отдыхе», который я выбрала, чтобы сберечь нервы, приходится потеть и переигрывать. Боюсь представить, что ожидает игрока на других уровнях сложности.

[b]Карта[/b]
Карта здесь огромная и содержит в себе более 130 локаций, которые герой может посещать до тех пор, пока не закончит задание, сбор ресурсов или пока не приютит кого-то. Единственное, что напрягает – это когда полностью исследовал всю местность: ресы брать негде, овечки закончились, все плюшки собрал и жить немного тяжелее… Мне кажется, можно было бы добавить рандомный спаун вещей и животных через каждые 15-30 игровых дней[spoiler]( параметрах что-то есть об этом, но на деле обновление локаций не застала)[/spoiler]
Это бы облегчило наши страдания.

[h3]Выжившим[/h3]

Dead in Vinland – [u]игра с высоким порогом вхождения[/u]. Вариативность событий здесь – настоящий ящик Пандоры. Не зная механик, можно на ровном месте получить травмы, болезнь, проклятие или смерть персонажа. Огромное спасибо тем, кто пишет гайды – без них тут выжить почти нереально.

Вопросы, которыми задаюсь:
✶Сыграла бы я снова?
Не зная всей этой подноготной – определенно да. Это был уникальный опыт.
✶Сыграла бы я еще раз сейчас?
Возможно, но только через пару лет, когда сотрутся воспоминания о грустном.

Несмотря на всю вайбовость, красивый арт, интрижки и наличие выбора, игра довольно строга к нам. Она требует усидчивости, дальновидности и готовности к поражениям.

If you like worker-placement board games like Agricola or turn-based resourse-management survival computer games like Dotage, Terraformers or even Against The Storm (not turn-based but you can pause and plan), then you will probably love this game.

The game has a turn-based combat system (you could meet enemies when exploring the island) but this is not the focus of the game. So, battles are a secondary but still important aspect of the game.

Many claim that the game has too much RNG. To offset the RNG of the game, choose "statistical RNG" when setting up a new game and "Gaussian distribution". These 2 choices will make the game much less random.

"Survival mode" is quite challenging, I wouldnt recommend starting your first game with higher difficulty than that.

Excellent game that I just recently disovered, I just hope that their new game dead in Antares that is coming out next month is at least as good as this.

На голову выше предыдущей Dead in Bermuda. Очень интересно выживать семьей викингов, попутно собирая полезных и не очень компаньонов. Сначала играла в среднем(?) режиме, а после смерти парочки второстепенных персов и жены гг, что и привело к мгновенному концу игры, решила перейти на легкий режим, который предлагается игрой. Можно настроить сложность по своему, но я пока в этом не нуждаюсь. Еле-еле построила все необходимые локации в лагере, теперь буду улучшать потихоньку и надеюсь, что прохождение не будет ко мне слишком жестоким. По скидке зашибись игрушка, хоть и на сегодняшний день графика выглядит устаревшей.

After having played Dead in Vinland for a modest 120 hours since 2020—and with the season of the great Steam Sales once again upon us—I feel compelled to share my equally measured opinion of this game.
TL;DR: this is one of those titles that really makes you wish Steam allowed a proper “mixed” review. Since it doesn’t, Dead in Vinland ends up with a negative one from me—also as feedback for the small developer team.

Since there are very few games with truly comparable gameplay (at least for me), I’ll briefly outline the core gameplay loop. In short: you manage the turn-based survival of a Viking family stranded on a—naturally—mystical and magical island. You assign camp tasks, end turns, and harvest resources. These resources are used to keep five different “health bars” in check—such as hunger, depression, or injuries—and to upgrade your camp. At the same time, you must pay a weekly tribute to your brutal overlord Björn so he doesn’t tear you apart, while also working toward eventually getting rid of him for good.

Interaction with the outside world happens through an exploration camp. You uncover the island tile by tile, gaining resources, items, and story progress—and, more often than not, triggering the game’s turn-based combat encounters. Exploration is not just a feature; it’s the game’s primary delivery system for both narrative and conflict.

Sounds fun? For a while, it genuinely is.

The early game loop works extremely well. Survival feels fragile, resources are scarce, and every decision matters. Your group constantly hovers on the edge of collapse, and smart investments noticeably improve your situation. Once things stabilize, the game delivers that familiar survival high and the classic “just one more turn” effect. Just one more upgrade. Just a quick experiment. Just one more mistake away from disaster.

Exploration has initial charm. Presented in an “adventure book” format, challenges offer visible percentage chances based on character skills, allowing for at least the illusion of informed decision-making. Especially early on, the rewards can be genuinely impactful and occasionally life-saving.

The setting is relatively fresh. Nordic mysticism isn’t new, but it’s used sparingly enough to feel distinct rather than exhausted.

Cons

Camp progression and the day-to-day loop burn out very quickly. Outside of Hard Mode, it doesn’t take long to reliably satisfy all needs. The question “Will Papa Eirik starve tonight?” turns into routine boredom after a few comfortable cycles—often enabled by a single camp upgrade. Resource surpluses (which are easy to generate) make Björn’s supposedly oppressive demands almost comical. Many camp upgrades reveal themselves as decorative or redundant. As a result, the game’s primary motivational engine collapses after only a few hours, long before the story is anywhere near complete.

So what fills the rest of the runtime?

RNG-driven exploration challenges. Almost all story progress is gated behind unique, percentage-based skill-check chains—and these are badly designed. BADLY. Typically, you’re required to pass several checks in sequence: a 60% Strength check, followed by a 20% Constitution check, then a 50% Dexterity check, sometimes even more. Fail a single one, and the character takes heavy damage and permanent debuffs. You then spend several turns refilling health bars just to try again. This loop easily accounts for around 80% of the game, including the final story moment. It’s repetitive, exhausting, and about as dramatic as failing a coin flip five times in a row.

Combat exists, technically. It can often be avoided—but unfortunately shouldn’t be. While the game frames your group as a vulnerable, struggling family, you are strongly incentivized to provoke fights whenever possible, simply to farm resources and experience points. The combat itself is shallow and repetitive: you repeat the same one or two actions per character, collect loot, move on. It becomes boring quickly, yet remains mechanically necessary. So much for survival through caution.

Character progression is poorly balanced. Level-ups are entirely RNG-based. Some skills are absurdly powerful, others borderline useless. If you invest mostly in camp skills—or simply aren’t offered combat traits—late-game fights become tedious. With the right few skills, however, combat becomes trivial. Balance, in other words, is optional.

Difficulty balance is uneven. On Normal, RNG is mostly a background annoyance that can be brute-forced through surplus resources. On Hard, RNG becomes the defining mechanic and often feels unfair rather than challenging. At times, this randomness borders on the absurd: even mundane actions like eating raw vegetables can randomly inflict “depression damage”—and if that depression bar happens to fill up completely, a Viking can be lost to it. A tomato, in other words, can be lethal. True hardcore survival.

The writing is hit-or-miss. Some moments work, but many dialogues read like the work of overenthusiastic hobby writers—an enthusiasm that frequently manifests in awkwardly suggestive, semi-erotic scenes. At best, it resembles coming-of-age drama; at worst, bargain-bin pulp fiction with axes.

Verdict

It’s a shame. Dead in Vinland shows genuine potential, especially in its early hours. But after roughly 10 hours, it inevitably devolves into a repetitive RNG simulator: fail a roll, refill health bars, retry—fail again—repeat.

A strong foundation undermined by poor balance, excessive randomness, and a surprising enthusiasm for turning survival into dice management.

Мы будем играть за семью викингов, которая после шторма попала на остров. По ходу сюжета к поселению могут присоединиться новые персонажи, и, честное слово, некоторые сюжетные моменты, связанные с ним, меня знатно удивили.

Кстати говоря, одно из самых приятных в игре — это сюжет, а именно диалоги между персонажами и выстраивание отношений между ними.

Изначально мне было сложно вклиниться в механику данной игры, но потом я приобрела DLC с собакой и, смотря на нее в приподнятом настроении, осознала, как играть в данную игру.

I remember getting a free copy of Dead in Bermuda and after playing it and really enjoying the concept. I thus decided to purchase Dead in Vinland along with all of it's DLC as I heard it was a superior version of the game.

In Dead in Vinland, you're tasked with helping a viking family survive on an island while progressing through an story and also having fighting elements. The character romance options were the icing on the cake for me. One brief romance option had me shook for a while, shipped it so hard lol!

I grew really attached to most of the characters, their stories, and I did everything in my power to help them survive. Yes, I save scummed a lot but that was only mildly annoying at times. Sometimes RNG would mess you up even if you were 96% right.

I finished the game after almost 100 hrs so I more than got my moneys worth and I heartily recommend this game to anyone who's on the fence about getting it.

Yes, there are a lot of skill checks and other things determined with a dice roll behind the scenes, but you can influence almost everything with your character's abilities, careful planning, stockpiles of the right items etc... but an 80% chance will stay 80%, however, and not magically work like 100%, no matter how close the two numbers are.
This game is peak crisis and probability management for thinkers instead of doers and does nothing wrong imo, except for not making it easy by default. You have to learn the mechanics and will likely fail a few times before you succeed - like in every roguelike.

[i]Or you can tweak literally any minute detail to your liking using the custom difficulty option (if you don't care about achievements, since custom difficulty disables them).You want for example bandages to be 14% more effective? No problem, just adjust the slider. 1% more effective, so the result always gets rounded down, but you still get no achievements? I don't know why, but yes you can do that. You want to influence how often certain weather occurs after a specific weather that came before? You can do that and much more down to the exact percentage.[/i]

People have absolutely no good reason to complain about the RNG, if all they had to do is buckle down and learn the mechanics (or change them).

Play The Last Spell, instead--that's a great game.

I can't recommend this game. I even tried with modified Custom difficulty settings and still just gave up. "Easy" mode, aka "Vacation Mode"--according to the developers--gives 10% bonus in general, and I set it to 20%, or what should be double Easy in most cases.

It still wasn't fun. We're not even talking about "Get gud" as a solution--I'm saying IT'S JUST NOT FUN. That's a pretty big problem.
It definitely suffers from RNG, but it just has design issues overall. I just cannot recommend this game.

Again...play The Last Spell, a fantastic game from the same developers. I'm about to try Forgotten Mines from them right now. So it's nothing against the developers...Dead In Vinland is just not worth your time and effort.

I'd considered trying again, but this time setting everything to like +50% (instead of +20%) but honestly...why bother?

I really want to like this game and I'm curious how the story will play out, but there is way too much and punishing RNG involved. And yeah, I know the game is supposed to be hard and stuff. I played lots of other hard games with RNG (Darkest Dungeon, XCOM, Six Ages, Battle Brothers, FTL, a bunch of traditional roguelikes etc. etc.) so I'm fine with the premise. Key difference is that the other games implementation were (more or less) fun to play and this is definitely not, because the devs way overdone it. There are way too much situations in which you are getting rekt with little to no player agency involved to do anything about it.

This is an incredibly difficult game (even on the easiest mode) and I love it so much.
It doesn't hold your hand, and the characters and story are well written enough, for me.
My biggest wish would be more nightly stories/interactions.
After finishing the game around day 80 I still had unknowns about my characters, and think my ending would have been better.
Am so excited for upcoming game though, hopefully lots of new fun QoL tweaks <3

I really want to like this game. It has charm, interesting characters, nice-looking art, and a lot of sticky survival mechanics to manage and progress through. Unfortunately, it's hard to appreciate the good when it's all marred by extremely punishing and rarely rewarding RNG.

Randomness can be a good mechanism for creating tension or forcing interesting scenarios you must cleverly adapt from. Sadly, Dead In Vinland is riddled with randomness in every single layer of its design, defaulting to it like a crutch when it doesn't know how else to create tension, uncertainty, or engagement.

Even consuming hard-earned resources to try and heal somebody from a horrible injury or sickness (acquired previously through bad RNG) can't escape the clutches of RNG - after all that effort the game still might tell you "Ah nope sorry, that didn't actually do anything. Go burn some more time and resources and try again, if you're not dead by then." It didn't create an interesting story, it was frustrating. Man, even the starting positions of your characters in combat is random! Why??

Other gripes:
- Leveling up characters feels very unsatisfying. Not only is everything a double-edged sword but, you guessed it, it's also [b]random[/b] what traits you can choose from! >50% of the time your choices are hardly noticeable or downright useless for that character.
- Characters (randomly) get so many traits and conditions that it all just becomes noise - nothing stands out to draw your attention or tell an interesting story.
- Combat gets stale *very* quickly. Played for 7hrs and every combat encounter was nearly identical (just random assortments of the same 3 enemies). Just a big RNG slug fest that ends up feeling like a chore.

I love the promise of this game but just can't get behind its over-reliance on randomness and its fixation on creating punishing mechanics rather than rewarding ones.

不建议玻璃心玩家玩，游戏机制太der了。
每天要供应水和食物，有限的资源必须按理分配
人物莫名其妙受伤，伐木中，制作中手指断裂。我不知道自己脸黑还是怎样。
奇葩的判定机制，探索地图百分比成功率的离奇失败。
面对初期敌人8点的暴击伤害，瞬间被秒。战后轻伤居然导致各种出血受伤的debuff。
白天只有50的疲劳晚上瞬间100挂掉。。。
每隔一周的上供，莫名的剧情挨打。获取食物的条件苛刻，钓鱼需要鱼钩，捕猎需要弓箭，但是耗费很大，捕获还有几率降低数量。
人物得专职，不然debuff叠加的巨快，初期人手不足，中期食物不够。后期。。我没玩到后期。
好不容易攒点食物过夜会变质一些。有晾晒功能了居然还会被偷，甚至晾晒的时候坏掉。
升级营地需要大量的材料，这些材料不得不去制作，而做材料更需要大量的原材料。例如“绳子”。
我已经不知道该如何吐槽了。
垃圾翻译导致不得不去查攻略。。。

两把都没保住那个野人小姑娘的命，看来是命中注定卡里娶不到媳妇，我也不是很吃这对懒得为了救她一命再走一遍流程。（其实我觉得卡里和那个纯良的双重人格小修士更合适，因为他们性格互补，卡里和野丫头就只是小孩子一起疯闹玩而已，两人凑在一起互相煽动只会惹祸。但就算卡里在父母和姨妈的用力撮合下和小修士结婚了她也明确表示不爱他）

这里凡是试图拆散家庭的都很烦，波斯舞女是个超级绿茶。但难能可贵的是人物并不脸谱化，即使是反面人物也有闪光点，这个舞女还会善意地给被家暴的家庭主妇送药，而且并不说穿是治脸上的伤的，只说是护肤化妆品。

小心那些人物小传总有问号的人，有问号说明没有看起来那么简单。揭开这些问号虽然不能跳成就但这无疑是这个游戏最有意思的内容，游戏玩法很无聊但编剧笔力是一流的。

Dead In Vinland makes Tharsis look like Game of the Year.

Just cant recommend the game.
Characters have over 6 stats to babysit. If any of them goes over a 100, they die and its a game over if its a family member.
Problem is... Some of those stats grow over time way too fast.
You are going to need the power of precognition, that means restarting the main campaign a couple of times, to figure out the developers order's construction of Stations (Chopping Wood, Healing, Crafting, etc.) and RNG Jesus.
Sickness and Disease the most guilty of stats growing over time way too fast, too easy to be hit with and WAY TOO SLOW to get them down.

Its too easy to get stuck in a loop of getting your family healthy and not doing anything to move the game forward.

On top of that, YOU MUST GOOGLE the answer to this game's puzzles.

Theres an EASY MODE that does almost nothing to mitigate the game's RNG, make the game go faster and not get stuck in an loop of getting those stats down.

Oh combat... well... combat sucks.
Characters can lvl up from doing actions in the game (Harvesting, Combat, Healing, ETC.) but that does nothing to their stats.
A lvl 6 character is just as weak as a lvl 1.
As you lvl up, you must pick 1 random perk from 5 the game gives you. This is the only way to improve your characters performance in battle, besides getting to a point where you can craft time limited items.

Pray RNG jesus for good combat perks, because theres a lot of Combat perks that sucks.
Theres one were gives you Min damage -1, Max damage +1. Riveting!(Sarcasm).

One of my favourite survival games.
The writing is a bit off sometimes, and the RNG goes hard here but all in all it is a good challenge, it is very very addictive and the visuals are gorgeous really.
The UI/UX is also a great example in this game, everything is very clear and tooltips and all are just beautiful and helpful.

‍The indictment of the game's design is very damning when you are already experiencing frustration within just the first hour of play, and it reveals to you pretty early on that it is going to be a rough ride to completion.

Minus the woke tropes that exist (coming from France yet again), such as but not limited to:
-An over-representation of alternative sexual identities (virtually every character is bisexual),
-A critique of "toxic masculinity" embodied through a main character who is deliberately crafted as an archetypal representation,
-Female characters portrayed as immediately competent and sympathetic while their male counterparts are mainly characterized as either incompetent, antagonistic, or both, requiring women to lead and,
-A mechanical double standard wherein spousal infidelity committed by the wife incurs no gameplay penalty, while the husband's similar transgression results in a "cheater" debuff . . .

[i]Dead in Vinland[/i] is one of those management and survival video games that tries to be hardcore through the introduction of artificial difficulty.

Where the frustration begins is upon the prompt realization that the "management" component derives from the game having this propensity to arbitrarily stack debuff upon debuff onto your characters. The game is all about chance and RNG, and so these random applications of penalties defies narrative coherence. Because succeeding a skill check may still result in receiving a punishment, albeit perhaps one that is less severe than if you had failed it. Given that this is a video game that relies on RNG and statistical probability, you're going to fail a lot of choices even when it seems like it shouldn't have happened. I shouldn't fail two 70% chance decisions twice in a row but that can happen and it instead fosters a sense of futility rather than a fun challenge.

Other than all of the cascading debuffs, you also have to manage scavenging for and collecting scarce resources for your continued survival and camp upgrading, as well as five core stats: fatigue, depression, hunger, thirst, and injury. Depression rises in those who are working too much as well as from rainy days, because rain and a lack of sunlight apparently makes people sad. OSHA and workers' compensation agencies did not exist during this time period, so it's important to know when to allow your characters to rest and recover, as outcomes are often decided by events wholly out of your control. Random injuries and afflictions that comprise the overall umbrella that is the debuff system can get applied even after mundane tasks like how your craftsman can accidentally hammer their finger and so their productivity will suffer for the next five days without proper medical aid, or your explorer can fracture their leg and so they'll be slower to unlock new areas. It is no wonder why the life expectancy of the medieval period was 30 maximum. Should any of these five metrics reach 100%, it's a 'game over' screen for the four main characters in the family while the more minor NPCs you can meet and recruit will just die permanently. This creates branching pathways as each character has their own unique dialogue options, romances, etc. I'll give credit to the developers for creating a game where each playthrough can be distinctly different than the last.

But the game is so random from its very foundation that it's bothersome. Is it now raining four days in a row? That's extra depression to manage and property to fix because the rain somehow damages everything, which will strain your resources. Does your character finally level up? Don't get too excited, because if you were building him to be the family's primary fighter, the five traits that get selected to choose from may not have provided you with a combat trait, and so you need to choose between giving him an irrelevant +10 to fishing or +10 to cooking even though your camp already has a dedicated fisher and chef. You just have to deal with him now being the sous chef. Did a tick latch onto your character while she was fetching water? You need to remove that tick with an item (that you may not have yet) otherwise she might contract a disease that will kill her eventually. The debuffs are so random that the NPCs were having a conversation where one accused the other of being a snorer and he had "loud snorer" applied to him for 5 days which makes sleep less effective.

Preventing these untimely deaths and curing their ailments and malaise is done through improving the well-being of characters through activities and items that you can collect or build at the camp. Someone who has high depression can be set to visit the "tavern" you've constructed to socialize and drink some beer. Characters who are overtly exhausted because of the cruel boss that is the player overworking them can recuperate in a napping area. You'll eventually build a medical station to create cures and healing methods to help battle against all of the health issues. These characters complete two tasks daily before nighttime brings a mandatory sequence of eating, socializing, and sleeping to start the next day of manual labor. During these scenes, the NPCs develop (or outright destroy) their relationships with one another in a sort of visual novel-style dialogue exchange. These conversations start automatically, and seems to be a predetermined positive or negative interaction without any player agency beyond occasionally getting to choose how to respond to something very specific or important to the relations between two characters. All you can really do is just hope that they work well together outside.

Choice and consequence permeates the experience to a degree that is far too common to be enjoyable, and that is in spite of the woke stuff that also exists to a degree. These variables are constantly fluctuating, usually negatively, and it's completely overdone. It transforms the gameplay into guesswork where you don't know which button to press on the prompt to avoid an unnecessary punishment because you decided to go right instead of left and now your character tripped over a rock and twisted their ankle for ten days. It's like one of those CYOA books where incorrect choices lead to immediate, severe consequences. Fundamentally, gameplay is simplistic and reduced to binary decision-making: Press the wrong button and your character will be nerfed and useless for 5 in-game days. Press the right button and you'll get some wood and stone but your character will be useless for 2 in-game days instead.

And that's not all. An island overlord demands regular tributes of valuable resources, on top of everything else you must manage. The setting depicts an era where brutality determines hierarchy and the weak serve the strong, which is perhaps realistic, but makes the story predictable: overthrow the tyrant by assembling a large enough team of people to challenge him.

The game, in general, is just very repetitive and predictable. You start to roll your eyes and groan each time someone receives a random debuff or whenever your party of three is thrust into a fight against enemies who are the same triplet as before, as you will have to fight these generic NPCs quite often, and often for very little reward, while the risk is great as losing these fights will also result in very harsh penalties. The combat system isn't as bad as other people make it out to be, but it's slow due to the turn-based nature, and 3v3, and so you'll need to try and gear three people for the purpose of fighting should the game take mercy upon you and allow you to choose relevant traits for that.

"Dead In…" is apparently a franchise from this studio, and there is another video game set to release soon enough, but unless the developers have learned to tone down the unnecessary punishment, I don't see myself playing any other games that share this nomenclature.

Unbalanced and Frustrating Gameplay

The power balance in this game is seriously off. As you progress, the difficulty spikes hard—even on easy mode with all settings in your favor. It becomes more frustrating than fun, and I still haven’t finished it because of how punishing it gets. Now they’re releasing another similar game with a sci-fi theme, but if they don’t fix the core balance issues, I can’t recommend it. Skip this one unless you enjoy hitting a wall.
