A very quick game to complete. Some times difficult to figure out where to go next - so using hints there is needed, otherwise it can be frustrating to look for the next area of clues/puzzles.
The main reason I go for yes rather than no on the reccomendation, is because the story is pretty interesting. It's corny and cheesy, but a fun quick game if you want something to do for a couple hours only.

Overall this is a bad game with some good elements. Some of the puzzles and HOP scenes are nice. I didn't have any problems with clicking something 1-2 times and it NOT registering like I've read on other reviews

It's a very short game (2 hours max), only consider it when it's less than $1, and even then use some discretion.

I'll put it this way, I was surprised at how short it was, but even so, I was so glad it was over

"Dance of Death" is an older game from 2015. It's a venerable 9 years old at the time of this review. It's a Hidden Object puzzle game, the type you normally see on mobile app stores or even as browser apps. There's literally hundreds of these on Steam, mostly published by Artifex Mundi, many of them free on mobile app stores, but this one will cost you money on Steam. There's a hocus pocus type magician show theme to the game, but this is a just a veneer over a tired and overdone set of hidden object minigames and Adobe Flash tier puzzles, wrapped together with a bunch of static screens that you "move" through by tapping your finger on your iPhone screen.

While these kinds of games are popular amongst casual gamers, it's difficult to argue this is a great value proposition as a PC game, especially considering the price of this compared to the hundreds of free HOGs on the mobile app stores. This is considerably worse than your usual Artifex Mundi copy + paste job.

It's from the Eastern Bloc shovelware pushers at Alawar, who are more famous for shoving well over one hundred RPG Maker asset flips onto Steam, all badly made cash grabs. Except for some reason they're wearing a fake moustache on this one... except they forgot to remove the Alawar splash screen when you launch the game. Oops. Why are these eastern european shovelware pushers always so shady and misleading? Can't they be honest about who they are? Oh no, of course not... if they were, people wouldn't be scammed into buying their crapware.

Crapware, what a word. I wish I never had to use it. But "Dance of Death" definitely counts.

The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.

So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?

"Dance of Death" has the almost unethical price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.

You can also play any of literally hundreds of HoGs for free on your iPhone. So why bother paying money for the experience on Steam?

I am 32 years old.

My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.

When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.

Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.

With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happineass of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.

After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.

Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.

Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.

Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.

Enjoyed the game's graphics, music, special affects (!) and story line, which is basically good vs evil. The beginning reminded me of some of the older MCF games.
A recommended CASUAL game despite the many negative reviews, which I'm glad I ignored after reading and went ahead and purchased at a really great sale price.

Solide, kurz, etwas langweilig. Ein Rätsel/Wimmelbildspiel aus dem Hause Alawar.

Wer Wimmelbildspiele im Allgemeinen kennt, wird mit "Dance of Death" keine Probleme haben. Die meisten Rätsel hat man schon irgendwo mal gesehen. Das ändert nichts daran, dass man hin und wieder etwas länger knobeln muss.

Als erfahrener Spieler/in im Genre wählt man gerne "Hardmode" aus. Tatsächlich ist die fehlende Anzeige von interaktiven Bereichen durchaus ein zusätzlicher Schwierigkeitsgrad. Andererseits besteht "Dance of Death" aus keinerlei "Strafen", z.B. bei zu vielen Fehlern im Wimmelbild. Auch gibt es keinerlei Erfolge, für die man etwas leisten muss wie ein Rätsel in unter X Sekunden lösen. Ebenfalls gibt es keinerlei gewohnte Minigames wie z.B. das Sammeln von X Gegenständen in den laufenden Szenen.

Einen Bonus enthält das Spiel auch nicht.

Die Story dreht sich um eine Art venezianischen Karneval, klassische Musik und Elemente der Totenbeschwörung/Dämonie.

Graphisch ist das alles hübsch, aber man hat schon Besseres gesehen. Ja, hin und wieder sind die Farben und Konturen sogar etwas schwammig/hässlich.

Die Musik ist dezent, manchmal ansprechend, manchmal in Form von Sound-Effekten etwas penetrant.

Nach knapp 2.5 Stunden hat man dann auch schon das Ende der kurzen "Detektivarbeit" rund um das entführte Kind gelöst.

Das Spiel ist schon im Grundpreis recht billig, 3,99 €, aber im Sale sicher für rund 1 € zu haben. Für diesen Preis ist es angemessen. Außerdem droppen 4 von 8 Sammelkarten, die mit etwas Glück 20-50 Cent einbringen.

Fazit: Keinerlei zu beanstandende Kritikpunkte, aber das Spiel ist weder in irgendeiner Form herausragend noch haben die Entwickler Wert auf eine "ansprechende" Menge Zeit gelegt. 0815 von der Stange, aber das mit Bravour.

Absolutely fantastic experience. Honestly, I look at this hurricane of negative reviews and have no idea why people literally devasted the game. Sure, it is lil dated and not without minor issues here and there. Something like cut endings of few voice lines or tricky navigation. But such low rating? No way. I will not accept this.

The game enchants you from the very beginning with it's unique visuals, fascinating music and thrilling atmosphere. Atmosphere here is simply mindblowing. I could literally believe that I was invited to the feast with the Satan. Story here is not that complicated, but with proper presentation it is still rather intriguing.

Very good variety of puzzles and mini games. Some of them I've seen the first time. And, overall, puzzles are not that easy. There are few simple ones, but at the same time few of them were rather tricky and it took me some time to find right solution. But in the end - that was good entertainment.

Side note. Still got no idea why such low rating. Yeah, I didn't play hundreds of HOGs, but more than few dozens - that's for sure. And most of them from Artifex Mundi. So I've got something to compare. And I must admit that this old game still managed to impress.

This game has a Shadow Shelter feel to it. There is so much detail in the artwork. The HOS are packed with a variety of interactive objects, morphing and animated objects. There are live actors. The game play is logical and flows well. You can use the help feature if you're note sure where to go next. You have an inventory. The journal helps explain the direction of the story.

My one wish would be a map for fast travel and that would show where you have an activity.

Take your time and search each location well because they are full of things you need to pick up or puzzles you'll come back and solve later.

It's a passable diversion, but as far as HOGs go, this is one of the worst "not bad" ones I've played. It's technically competent, with no crashes or bugs to speak of. The music is mostly a very simple arrangement of danse macabre with some other incidentals. A couple of the puzzles are incredibly obtuse (make portraits of famous people, some of whom you've heard of but none well known enough anymore to be recognizable, also some poorly translated or archaic words) and a pair of puzzles that are exercises in tedium that make the "skip puzzle" button almost mandatory.

It's not a total waste of time, but I'd encourage people to seek out other HOGs first.

This game was only ok. Bit short on story. The villain is just called "the villain", for example. Sometimes you had to go back to a point you thought there was nothing at only for something to appear or a HOG to open up. No achievements. No bonus chapter. Could have been better, but not the worst I have played.

Absolutely jampacked with sliding block puzzles, which I dislike and therefore cannot recommend this game, unless you like that sort of thing.

Addendum

I finished the game at the suggestion of a friend to just power through to see the laughably terrible ending and scenes and while it was funny (eelface), I should have just watched it somewhere.

This game is f*cking awful. The amount of times I clicked objects with no effect, just to throw up my hands and use the hint button and have it highlight something I clicked on several times? F*cking awful. Not fun, not funny enough for the slog.

I really enjoyed this game! There's some solid puzzles, the story is short but sweet, and the aesthetic is just really consistent and i enjoyed it. It might look a little wonky and old, but my boyfriend and i played it together and had a good time. definitely get it on sale though, since it is rather short.

Une erreur de parcours...

Surtout déçue car il y avait du bon ! Prometteur et visuellement aguicheur :
L'ambiance, l'incrustation de "vrai" dans le décors se voulant glauque et semi réaliste/fantaisiste, les thèmes abordés (les rituels, la musique, la possession tout l'attirail du jeu bien sombre...), les apparitions fantomatiques, les SOC ; Scènes d'Objets Cachés ; originales !

Mais c'est un NON catégorique !

Entre les textes qui boudent les accents et qui coupent les mots. Le scénario qui est torché en moins d'une heure et qui, à l'exception de quelques jump scares, manque cruellement de profondeur et de surprise. On enchaîne les pièces et les couloirs pour cocher et remplir les objectifs qui sont listés et s'accumulent sur une note au fil de votre avancée. A aucun moment on n'a la possibilité de s'attacher aux personnages où à leurs fins tragiques et même lorsqu'on rencontre le grand méchant (dont on ne saisit pas la dimension ni les ambitions), c'est cruellement ridicule !

La fin de ce jeu a été une délivrance et je n'ai aucun scrupule a avoir passé les puzzles franchement trop durs à mon niveau. Les explications ne sont pas toujours claires...ça n'a pas dû aider.

C'est dommage et décevant !
Pas du tout instinctif et vide de sens.
Si la forme est belle le fond est 0.

For the type of game it is, it is actually what you would expect. For me love these type of games so do not have much to say. If you like working on your own and figuring out puzzles then you will love it, whether it is easy or hard.

Es ist nicht das beste HOG, das ich je gespielt habe, aber das schlechteste definitiv auch nicht. Es hat eine gruslige Atmosphäre, ein paar fordernde Rätsel und eine interessante Story. Aber leider gibt´s auch ein paar schlechte Seiten: Grafisch ist es etwas old-fashioned und die HOS fand ich - v.a. am Anfang - nicht so gut. Was aber wirklich zu viel des guten war, waren die satanischen Elemente, die stellenweise die Atmosphäre etwas kaputt gemacht haben. Außerdem ist es ziemlich kurz.

Ich komme nicht umhin, zu sagen, dass ich Spaß am Spiel hatte, trotz der Mankos. Deshalb kann ich´s empfehlen.

Довольно убогая игра. Сюжет притянут за уши. Совершенно неуместные скримеры. Отвратительно дёргающиеся вставки с отснятыми людьми. Никак не объясняются призраки детей. Максимально тупой конец для "злодея". И да, виноват во всём дворецкий.

Сюжета из четырёх глав, я что-то не приметила.

К слову, в описании написано что-то про пять часов. Даже при отсутствии карты, по которой можно было бы быстро перемещаться, прохождение заняло у меня чуть больше часа, так что в данном случае, это откровенная ложь.

Атмосфера кстати, тут скорее третьесортного ужастика.

Музыкальное сопровождение абсолютно не захватывающее, более того, игра изобилует неуместными и раздражающими звуками.

Не советую тратить на это своё время и деньги.

Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Gawd I don't know.
There are elements in this game that I really truly enjoyed but many many things that I did not. Some entertaining moments but consistency was rubbish. If you recoil from satanic heavy or other dark world stuff then you should not get this game. For me it had its enjoyable play moments but at other times it's this: wait...what?...why? I would say I did not come away feeling accomplished or thrilled with any of it. It's a decent game that I got on a good sale and if you can get on sale too then I would say yes, give it a play. But at full price it's a toss-up as to whether you will feel it was worth it.

I got this cheap (for like 50 cents) so I'd argue the game is worth the price. It's short, but well made. A 60/100 effort.

Ein durchschnittliches Wimmelbild Abenteuer. Die Geschichte ist ordentlich in Szene gesetzt, aber ziemlich kurz. Nach zwei Stunden ist man durch. Zudem fehlt das Schnellreisesystem, das in aktuellen Spielen Gang und Gebe ist. Aber somit wäre die Spielzeit noch viel kürzer. Es gibt zwar zwei verschiedene Schwierigkeitsgrade, doch hin und wieder weiß man einfach nicht was als nächstes zu tun ist und die Rätsel schwanken von viel zu leicht bis zu "zum Glück gibt es die überspringen Taste". Die deutsche Übersetzung ist auch noch grauslich, da die Umlaute gänzlich fehlen. Aber weil das Spiel nicht so viel falsch macht und ich schon schlimmere Hidden Object Games gespielt habe, gibt es gerade noch so einen Daumen hoch. 6/10

Also, ich muss sagen es ist nicht das schlimmste WBS das ich jemals gespielt habe, ABER es ist knapp.

Ich habe es beim ersten Mal, als ich es angefangen habe zu spielen, nicht durchgespielt,
wie ich jetzt weis, war ich bereits über die Hälfte des Spiels, als ich damals aufhörte.
Der Spielstand, war übrigens deffekt und ich durfte dieses "Meisterwerk" von vorne anfangen.
Wenn ich mal über die vielen Schreibfehler hinweg sehe, mach ja selbst auch einige :P
Und auch darüber hinwegsehe, dass es keine Umlaute gibt, welches gleich von Anfang an klar ist, da man nur "berspringen" liest und dem MenÜ, der letzte Buchstabe abhanden gekommen ist.
Fand ich es doch ziemlich interessant das ich "Chamlenobjekte" finden sollte.
Es veränderte sich kurz etwas im Suchbild und da musste man dann schnell hin klicken.
"Dart" spielen in einen WBS? Im "richtigen" Moment klicken.
Vielleicht gehöre ich zur alten Schule, ABER wenn ich mir ein WBS kaufe möchte ich Rätsel und Suchbilder, wo das Spiel mir sagt was ich suchen soll. Nicht, da hat es geblinkt, schnell hinklicken.

Habe beim "zweiten" Spieldurchgang knappe 2 Stunden gebraucht um es durchzuspielen.
Und denke, das dieses Spiel die €3,99 nicht wert ist.
Wer es trotzdem probieren möchte, sollte auf einen Sale warten.

Interesting and kind of odd game and story. Not amazing, but I actually enjoyed playing through it. I played through the entire game in one sitting (a little over 3 hours). Had one bug along the way that blocked me from completing one of the puzzles, but that specific one wasn't much of a puzzle anyway, and I could just hit the skip button to continue.

Le moins que l'on puisse dire c'est que l'ambiance de Dance of Death est soigné... lugubre à souhait mais malheureusement l'intro complètement bizarre du début qui annoncait un jeu intérressant n'est pas à l'image de la fin avec une mort ridicule du grand méchant de l'histoire...

L'ensemble du jeu est constitué d'un montage d'images et d'objets réels parfaitement intégrés ce qui donne cet aspect assez dark. Le tout est agrémenté de petit jump scare et d'animations afin de faire resortir le côté magie noire du début...

Malheureusement, DoD peine à maintenir la pression (et pourtant en moins de 3 heures il est fini) la faute justement à son scénario bancal et un manque de cohérence dans le tout.

Et pourtant, les SOC étaient plutôt bien fait et les puzzles d'un niveau difficile voire très difficile mais le fait de tourner en rond en mode expert car on ne sait pas trop où se diriger pour débloquer la suite, le manque flagrant de narration gache vraiment le plaisir de jeu.
Et si on ajoute à cela une traduction française qui ne prend pas les caratères accentués (à, é, è, ...) on obtient tout juste un jeu passable.

A faire éventuellement pour l'ambiance lugubre mais recommandé... en l'état c'est clairement non... Il faudrait vraiment que les éditeurs bossent sur des éventuels correctifs des jeux produits...

Despite the great reviews, this game has been awful. I would like to request a refund, but the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at Steam have been rapping my knuckles about my refund activity of late (you know, games crashing, not running, etc -- but... my bad...) It is an ugly, clunky game and for some bizarre reason, I can only play to a certain point before it stops saving when I exit out. When I search for support, Steam directs me to the game company, and they're a dead end.

Ah well, brighter minds than mine can ponder this one.

Dance of Death isn't a fun HOG. It's very short, the story is just meh, the hidden object scenes are okay, and the voice acting is laughable. I wouldn't recommend this game, but if you have it, get in a cheap bundle.

I play a lot of HOG/point and clicks and cannot recommend this title. It was downright ridiculous!

The voice acting includes a scene where someone dies saying "Oh darn it!". The voice acting is generally terrible.
The puzzles are almost non-existent and the storyline is bizarrely threadbare. It's more like the developers created a bunch of concept art for satanic scenes and shoehorned a story around them.

I did finish this game and it only took me 2 hours, taking it easy. To be honest, it isn't even worth the low cost - it was so ridiculous it wasn't even fun, not even in a trashy way. Never again!

Wer ein gruseliges "Wimmelbild Spiel" sucht ist bei "Dance of death" gut aufgehoben.

"Dance of death" ist kein Horrorspiel sondern eine schaurige "Gute Nacht Geschichte" wie sie meine Großmutter nicht besser htte erzhlen knnen.

Als Detektiv msst ihr einen Jungen finden der auf mysteriseweise aus einem Waisenhaus entfhrt wurde.

Ihr klickt euch durch Bilder die im Venizianischem Stil gehalten sind und einen antiken Zauber verbreiten.
Gefllt mir sehr gut!

Betrettet ihr einen Raum tauchen Geistergestalten auf um euch Angst einzujagen.
Dies funktioniert genauso wenig wie die Gruselgeschichten die man sich gerne unter Geschwistern und Freunden, tief eingegraben unter Bettdecken, gegenseitig erzhlt hat um sich untereinander das frchten zu lehren.
Vor Angst hat dabei niemand in ein Kissen gebissen, sondern verursachte nur ein angenehmes erschauern.
Diesen Charme verbreitet auch der "Tanz der toten".

Das Spiel verluft flssig von Raum zu Raum.
Manchmal tauchen auf geheimnisvolle Art und Weise Gegenstnde und Geister in Zimmern auf welche man schon durchsucht hatte. Gespenstisch! Kalt über den Rcken rinnt der Angstschweiß!

Die Wimmelbilder sind zauberhaft gestaltet und die Rtsel teilweise fordernd.
Wer sie nicht meistern kann, benutzt den "Lsungsknopf".

Ich habe "Dance of death" mit Genuß gespielt und hatte dabei amsantes Zhneklappern.
Technische probleme hatte ich nicht.
Das Preisleistungsverhältnis ist stimmig (auch ohne Sale).

Das Spiel ist erfreulicherweise komplett auf Deutsch.
Eigenartigerweise fehlen aber alle Umlaute.
Tragisch ist das allerdings nicht.
Ich habe mein Review deshalb auch ohne Umlaute geschrieben.
Wenn ihr beim lesen damit keine grsseren Probleme hattet kommt ihr auch mit dem Spiel klar.

Ich empfehle "Dance of death" allen Spielern die sich gerne durch Wimmelbilder klicken und sich an ihrer Gnsehaut erfreuen.
Auch denen die gerne am Volksfest mit der Geisterbahn fahren, nur um ihren schauerlichen Spaß dabei zu haben.

Not good. Very short for starters. The puzzles are also very poorly explained, meaning I just skipped a lot of them. The story is all over the place and doesn't make much sense. This might provide some fun for say, $1, but otherwise, there are plenty of better HOGs out there.

Совершенно не напрягает, проходится где-то за час, сюжет незамысловат.

TLDR: Silly jumpscares, cryptic magical plot, delivery through fake old newspaper clippings. Story cheesy and a bit anemic. Short. Heavy reliance on hint system.

This is a somewhat competent game in that the art and music are fairly up to par, however the cohesion between the puzzles and the environment is lackluster. With often you trying things on other things giving you things which do not even logically make sense (e.g. completing a painting on a wall to receive a magic stone that acts as a lense to do a hidden object in the same room or pushing a knife in a statue with a paper in its mouth to open a doorway)

The plot itself is half interesting, with loose ties to the Stradivarius type of instrument requiring occult interference in their fabrication. It is not well handled enough to be truly memorable however and you are not missing anything by avoiding it.

Altogether the game was enjoyable in that the hint system recharged quite fast allowing to cut nonsensical tedium to a minimum and helping to navigate the otherwise rather disjointed and disorienting still images that form the environment.

I would not however recommend it or be interesting in playing it ever again. For those reasons I am removing local content permanently and hiding from library for declutter.

Итак. Вопиющий случай! Учитывая, что игра разработана Алаваром: я совсем разочарована и оставлю игру запущенной только для того что бы получить карточки. Такого "Бесподобного" сюрприза от игры я не получала даже в тяжелые 2000, когда на дисках покупались пиратские копии. В игре я нашла как минимум 3 ярких Бага. Черт возьми, релизную версию игры надо проверить хотя бы на стандартный функционал. Найденные мной баги заключатся в следующем: сохранение срабатывает только при выходе, в меню нажав Esc можно вызвать еще одно меню. И если через вызванное меню в меню выйти, во-первых, он не сразу выдет (выванное меню азкрывается), во-вторых, сохранение сработало криво - в итоге я больше не могу продолить игру под своим прошлим профилем. По нажатию кнопки "Играть" ничего не происходит. Т.е. у меня потерян весь мой прогресс. Класс! Больше играть я не хочу. Да атмосферу жутенькую они выдержали, использовали классмческую мелодию - Пляска смерти Камиля Сен Санса. Звучит прекарсно.

This was an interesting Hidden Object game. While the plot wasn't the greatest, and the dialogues were... wierd, the games within were fun enough.

I enjoyed it enough to recommend it, at least.

В сравнении с другими играми подобного жанра эту хочется забросить после первого часа игры.
История ниочем, головоломки неинтересные, многие без понятного обьяснения.
Управление плохое, часто промазываешь мимо стрелки куда идти-это бесило.
Не рекоммендую, прошел, чтобы узнать сюжет.

Well, this one was an odd one. A "new" experience and I consider myself quite a big HOG fan. Long story short, the game was boring as hell, story made no believable sense and the puzzles were quite pointless and confusing - made me want to click on "skip" quite often. So only buy this one with a -90% coupon. Not recommended.
