I wish there was a neutral rating - "not recommended" is too harsh, but I also can't recommend it either. I played on the latest December 2025 fan patch and it's still been rough - can only imagine how bad the original was. The invincible sidekicks were definitely helpful thanks to the patch.
The main downsides of this game are the levels themselves - sometimes you need to collect a few items along the way and at the end of the level the game will require them from you. Pray hard that you got them all, otherwise you'll have to redo the entire level - sometimes going back is not a viable option due to sidekick inability to move to the prior locations. I missed one thing on the Alcatraz level (the salt) and had to circle the level one more time. And don't even get me started on the AEGIS key.
With that said, I enjoyed the story, scenery variety, solid weapon roster and satisfying enemy gibbing. The winter village was probably my favorite level with all the magic and atmosphere.
Do not attempt without a fan patch.

I played it back in 2000s and it was very average video game with ok looks, and not much have changed since. I don't really get the narrative, that with all the community patches, it is "truly amazing game that it could have been". No it isn't. Patches are amazing, great job. But the core gameplay is just not too much fun. It isn't bad but it is just not enough for me to recommend.

La historia de la creación de Daikatana fue una locura, y no tanto por el juego en sí, sino por las locuras de John Romero. El título fue desarrollado por gente que no estaba preparada, con un Romero gastando plata en boludeces y prometiendo que estaría listo en 7 meses. Claramente todo salió mal, el juego fue un fracaso tanto por las actitudes de Romero como por la recepción del público, vendiendo apenas unas 60.000 copias entre PC y Nintendo 64.
Pero… ¿el juego realmente es malo, o solo fueron críticas de la época?
La verdad es que no es tan malo como lo pinta la historia. No es un GOTY del 2000, pero tampoco es injugable. Lo que sí, tiene la chispa de los 90 y el espíritu de Doom o Quake está ahí, medio revuelto, pero existe.
La trama se ambienta en un futuro donde una corporación dirigida por un tal Mishima domina el mundo. Ahí entra Hiro, nuestro protagonista, que debe salvar la humanidad con la famosa Daikatana. El juego nos hace viajar por distintas eras persiguiendo al villano para reescribir la línea temporal y evitar una dictadura global, muy al estilo de los nazis en Wolfenstein: The New Order.
La premisa suena bien, pero está planteada de manera vaga, la historia central aparece al principio y al final, y en el medio los viajes en el tiempo se sienten de relleno. Son largos, repetitivos y básicamente consisten en recorrer escenarios hasta matar a un jefe.

Tenemos dos viajes al pasado literal y uno al “pasado que es nuestro futuro”, que no difiere mucho del primer capítulo. El primero es la Grecia antigua, donde uno esperaría realismo, pero no, es una Grecia tipo God of War, llena de criaturas mitológicas. Lo raro es que los espartanos parecen convivir felices con esos monstruos. Después viene la Edad Media, con vampiros, magos, zombis, demonios, hombres lobo y la peste bubónica, sí, la peste bubónica. Todo muy bizarro.
El juego se organiza en capítulos con niveles, parecido a Doom, pero más cercano a lo que vimos en Half-Life (1998). Gráficamente se parece mucho, y a veces se ve peor. Los escenarios están bien representados en cada era, pero cuando toca entornos “contemporáneos” o futuristas, el juego se vuelve indistinguible de otros shooters de la época. Además, algunos enemigos carecen de contexto, como los espartanos y las criaturas mitológicas, que cumplen su rol de enemigos pero sin lógica narrativa. Tampoco queda claro por dónde avanzar, no esperaba pintura amarilla, pero los elementos rompibles o escalables no están bien introducidos al gameplay, y uno termina avanzando más por suerte o mirando un video en YouTube.

El gameplay es divertido, aunque genérico. Lo que lo salva es que cada época te da armas distintas, lo que aporta variedad.
Sin dudas lo peor de Daikatana es la inteligencia artificial. El juego te da dos compañeros, SuperFly y Mikiko, y el hecho de que recuerdes sus nombres ya es malo. Para avanzar, siempre necesitás que estén cerca, pero la IA se queda parada, se bugea o no reacciona. Básicamente sos su niñera. Eso enlentece todo y genera frustración.
A esto se suman problemas técnicos, crasheos al cambiar de zona, personajes que mueren pero el juego no lo registra, y como su entidad queda “muerta”, no podés avanzar porque no están con vos. Todo esto, combinado con la IA, hace que Daikatana sea un suplicio. Por suerte existen parches y la consola de comandos para teletransportar a esos NPC inútiles.
Daikatana no es bueno, pero tampoco es tan malo. Su identidad atrapada en el tiempo lo convierte en un producto curioso, y la narrativa de su desarrollo acrecienta su mito. Son motivos válidos para probarlo. Eso sí, no es para todos. La paciencia es esencial… aunque la paciencia siempre fue esencial en los juegos de antes. Capaz caí en la acción rápida, en los caminos pintados de amarillo, en las microtransacciones y los pases de batalla, y me olvidé de lo más importante, jugar… jugar.

OK, here's how to play and enjoy the game: get the user made mod that removes the helper AI from game play. Also, potentially get the "save anywhere mod." Use both mods, and the game is a lot of fun! Really, it's the bad partner AI that ruins this game, everything else is great; great movement, unique weapons, satisfying combat. It's too bad Ion Storm didn't remove the partners from the game when they realized they couldn't get them working. Unfortunately, they must have felt this was a cornerstone of the game, but they were wrong. It's a far better game without them.

Я уверен, что без его присутствия, игра бы потеряла некоторые нужные краски. Вот есть же много легендарных игр, таких как: Blood, Serious Sam, Hollow Knight, F.E.A.R., Dark Souls, Postal, Ultrakill, The Binding of Isaac, Undertale, Hatred, Faith
Вот есть всё эти великие игры, которые Лёня тоже смог породить на свет. А есть Daikatana. Daikatana - это самый пик творчества Лёни и Ромеро. Они сделали самую лучшую и легендарную игру во всей игровой индустрии.
Игра конечно та еще солянка васянка но вполне себе неплохо, лучше это пройти чем рандомный инди шутан. Видно что игра делалась под другой движок, тут почти всё мешает пользоваться прелестями крейзи мувмента квейка. Логика уровней местами потешная, иногда сам не понимаешь как находишь нужную дырку чтоб пролезть или как активируешь проход. Если есть возможность, то лучше играть в коопе, там не будет застреваний спутников, а для этой игры это прям проблема.

when this was coming out I remember reading articles about how something called "Half-Life" was also releasing around then, and how it was a 'wannabe Daikatana-killer' - this "Half-Life" had the tall order of trying to come out and eke out some small part of Daikatana's pre-release hype before the mighty game-changer came out and redefined what it meant to be a video game. well, I guess it turned out pretty okay for "Half-Life". not so much Daikatana.
I do not wish to suck it down, Mr. Romero, and I regretfully remain not your ♥♥♥♥♥. sorry. I spent several frustrating minutes trying to shoot bugs and frogs in the dark while the dragonfly enemy's sound looped over and over and over. it wasn't great, is what I'm saying. I doubt I'll bother trying again - I got this for a dollar just to finally see whether the legends of this game's crapitude were true.

I recommend this game, but only for a dollar and ONLY if you're curious about witnessing a shoddy part of ancient history. play this to see what all today's boomers thought every game was going to try and live up to following its (delayed, delayed and delayed) release ... and think about how this then had to come out well AFTER Half-Life fully shocked and shook the culture (and actually *did* change what we all thought video games were.)
HL totally and thoroughly flipped the pre-release script - NOBODY outside Valve woudl've bet on Half-Life over Daikatana in 1998 or so. nobody. the fact that they were so confident in this game they put out full-page ads saying John Carmack was going to make all of us his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because Daikatana was gonna be THAT amazing just adds the surreal pricelessness of this whole embarrassing, fascinating picture. get it for a dollar, it's on sale for that much probably all the time. do not expect a good game, though.

Honestly my expectations were stupidly low and with that in mind, it's pretty fun. It's a pretty creative game with tons of variety, the only real pain in the ass is the friendly AI. They're quite impressive for the time, being able to go anywhere you can and make intelligent decisions, but they are prone to getting themselves killed. If you aren't planning on getting any fan patches I recommend playing on easy as the difficulty can get a bit erratic on medium and above. I think overall the N64 is less busted and frustrating but for a few dollars and some patience there is still some fun to be had here.

Everybody hated this game when it came out, and now I understand why. The problem isn't the graphics or the AI - it's bad design. I read somewhere that Daikatana features 25 weapons and 60 enemies, and that should be the first clue. A proper shooter has a limited number of weapons, each with a specific function. Daikatana consists of four episodes, where each episode is essentially its own game, with its own theme, weapons and enemies. That may sound interesting, but none of the episodes have any real depth. There's a lot of content, but none of it is especially interesting, balanced or well-thought-out. It gets boring quickly.
I hoped I'd be able to say something like: after all these years, with all the community patches and everything, Daikatana is actually quite fun! But no, this game sucks on a fundamental level.

I feel like this game gets more hate than in deserves. Its not a terrible game, it certainly doesnt deserve to be on the "worst games of all time" list. There is a couple of annoying mechanics, (like the companions) but thats about it. Its got some good shooting mechanics and weapons, and I really liked the platforming. Really fun to bunny hop around.
If you like early 2000's arena shooters like Quake 1 and 2, Turok 1 and 2, Unreal, and Half Life I feel like you should like this game (Tho the story isnt as good as Half Life ha, just the shooting mechanics are similar)
I should mention, that if you play, you should install the 1.3 patch, because it does upgrade a few things, (like being able to save whenever you want) that does make the game more fun and less annoying to play.
Over-all Im glad I played it, and did have quite a bit of fun bunny hopping around, and shooting enemies.
So to start, there's objectively a lot of issues with the game.
Yes, the AI is not amazing, the story is pretentious, the graphics are muddy looking and awful by today's standards, and certain parts of the game are not coded perfectly leading to some softlocks or restarts being needed.
That being said, this is a game I remember hearing a lot about around a decade ago when it got popular to rip on - and after trying to play it (and being incredibly frustrated at the time with how the save system worked), I was eventually stopped around chapter 2 due to a map bug.
So why am I putting this as a positive review if everything i've mentioned so far is negative?
Well, with some of the improvements in mind (like a standard save option) it's still fun to me. Most people who were raised on newer gen consoles will likely hate the game regardless, but if you're a fan of old boomer-shooters like DOOM or Quake there's some fun to be had. I should also preface that part of the fun I had with this game was streaming it with my friends, however, I did genuinely enjoy the game for just how goofy and at times utterly poor the animations or story telling was. For instance, the opening scene that shows how "Amazing" the Daikatana is - only to show someone wacking an enemy over and over with a basic looking katana - yes it looked dumb, it did not sell me on the Daikatana being some powerful god-tier weapon, but it also had my friends and I laughing and enjoying ourselves. And I think that's the important part.
In the end, is the game "worth" its full retail price of $6.99? It's up to you - if you and your friends enjoy ripping on games and/or if you're a fan of old boomer shooters, this might be good. That being said though, the game has been on sale for a very extensive time now and I solidly believe that $0.97 for this was well worth my time. I mean, for the price of a couple CS2 skins, or....several minutes of working a job in real life, I was able to not only entertain myself for several hours BUT also contribute a few in-jokes among my friends that we randomly quote, like "OH NO, _____ GOT BLOWED DOWN!". To me, that's definitely worth the almost one dollar asking price. Just don't go into the game expecting it to be the next Half Life or Halo, don't expect it to be a hidden gem that the world skipped over, and play it for what it is; a janky, goofy, mess of a boomer shooter.
I dont even remember when/how I got this game, but it just really is not that good... I read its more "playable" with a lot of patches but I feel like even with fixes/patches for all the "jank" still wouldnt really save its gameplay

It's a janky mess that barely works. It genuinely does have really cool ideas that I really can't hate it for.
It's like a proto-deus ex. It's unfortunate deus-ex DID release literally a month after this game, but it has a lot of things that if it had been all thought out initially and worked on properly this really could have been a really cool game.
Things like a levelling system, the guns being designed to play with the tight corridors and atrociously quick ttk. Bouncing shots for your weapons so you can angle your shots, but the quick movement forces you to be quick about shots like that or to focus on hiding. It has some fun music, a poorly aged but probably fun for the time story that's very... imaginitive I suppose? It's tropey but also somewhat trippy with how far it goes with cyber-dystopia. It does have poor sound design, it wasn't balanced properly and QA was pretty much the bane of this games existence. It's extremely bad trying to exactly figure out where or how you're supposed to get anywhere, and that's without mentioning the bugs. It has story cutscenes with actually solid for the time voice acting. What really impressed me was how smooth the camera movements are within the cutscenes, proper cuts, rotations and tracking. It's actually fascinating this game came out in the year 2000.
It is sad for me to say that I just couldn't play through it. I hadn't even reached the point of npc following systems that are apparently the worst part of the game, but I just couldn't find any way to progress. I genuinely just couldn't figure out where to go and when I did I couldn't tell what I had to do next.
Now if any game needed a remake, it's this game. Let's see Mister Romero's vision! What did he really want this piece of ♥♥♥♥ to be o3o

This game manages to be dog s*it even with the 1.3 patch. I cant even imagine how someone could of played this game in its original form. Already, the AI is braindead, your allies are braindead, the placement of power ups is braindead. If it wasn't for the extra options thanks to the 1.3 patch, you would literally have to chase down your allies because they always get lost and you cant progress without them. Luckily with the patch, they get teleported to the end of the level once you arrive. The weapons are crap, level design is abysmal and don't get me even started on the annoying smaller enemies such as the dragonflies or rats and bats with constant screeching sounds and even with auto aim, its still hard to hit them. I'm a kid from the 90s but this game is so bad that I feel like sending Romero an email 25 years later just to remind him what a pile of crap he made. Play it out of morbid curiosity if you skipped this back in the day but without god mode or noclip, this game is unplayable.

I bought Daikatana years ago for a dollar and finally decided I'd try to play it. Without a patch, the game is rough and nearly unplayable and locked to a 4:3 aspect ratio. With the 1.3 patch, it's playable, but I still couldn't find myself bothering to play it when the moment to moment gameplay was so dry. I've seen other reviews give it a positive spin because "it's ambitious" but ambition doesn't mean anything when the game is boring. Probably good deathmatch from all the guns though.

The game got so hard to progress that I stopped playing. I shouldn't be responsible for other characters lives in the game; where if they die I have to start over from the last check point, and sometimes the other characters get stuck near a door, the door shuts and kills them. Doors shouldn't kill you when they shut; that's stupid and makes the game unnecessarily hard.

作为一个BS游戏，一大堆的敌人是各种小动物有点难绷-包括不限于小飞龙（苍蝇）、青蛙、老鼠、蜘蛛等，并且除了爆炸类的弹道武器大部分都有未命中反弹的设定，导致如果你乱开枪很多时候会给你自己打到濒死。
游戏里的两个队友设计过于拖节奏+鸡肋（非官方补丁可选无助手），两人时不时就会因为地形卡主，需要你去攻击唤醒他们那沉睡的寻路跟随AI（在E4M4这关尤为离谱）而两个人提供的帮助极为有限，在部分关卡你还需要指引他们去获得武器，否则他们见到敌人会吓得乱跑。
过场动画设计方面的非常生硬，看着着实让人尴尬。游戏推进的场景互动方面也有些不明显，有几个关卡容易迷路。总体玩着还行（没试过不打补丁的版本）

To be honest, I purchased this game because I wanted to have it at hand for the moment I had time to play it.
As far as I can tell, the best way to play it is with mods that remove the CPU companions. I have played it before (N64 and an old backup copy, back when I was younger), so I know how problematic are they.
I can recommend it because we could play it more for the LOLs than anything else.
Daikatana's reputation as one of gaming's biggest disasters overshadows what was actually a remarkably ambitious FPS that was simply ahead of its time.

Features now standard in games like Borderlands or Destiny were revolutionary here. It's not the masterpiece Romero promised, but it's far from the disaster history remembers.
The game is so broken I had to install a patch to make it playable. I guess that makes me john romeros b.itch.
TL; DR: recommended for those who can't get enough of late 90's post-Quake FPS games, but only with the warning that [spoiler] THE UNOFFICIAL FAN PATCH IS AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY [/spoiler].
Pros:
-extremely creative throughout its entirety (weaponry, level design, enemies, etc.)
-shooting is responsive with good feedback
-some great weapons that are terrific fun to gib with and make you wish you could have some of what the devs were having at the time
-once leveled up the eponymous Daikatana is extremely fun to use
-endearingly wacky story and its overall cheesiness is stupid fun in a Saturday Morning Cartoon kind of way
Cons:
-I wasn't joking about the fan patch: the vanilla game is still so buggy and broken that without it it's almost unplayable
-even with the patch companion AI can still be frustrating and cutscenes can still break things at some points
-some terrible weapons that make you grateful you can't actually have what the devs were having after all
-the swordplay can be janky, and unsatisfying until leveled up to at least 3
-the first couple of levels are literal pain...the constant cacophony of mechanical frogs, mosquitoes, and alligators mixed with blaring alarms combined with the eye-bleeding green of level assets and the projectiles of the very first weapon you get (ion blaster, eh? I see what you did there, John...) unendingly assail your senses through those levels
Overall, I had a blast with Daikatana as this is admittedly a classic in its own right...AFTER I installed the fan patch and kept follow-on expectations in check. I'll be honest, Episode 1 likely filters a lot of people straight away because the first couple levels are just so harsh, and not in a difficulty way (though this IS a John Romero game so it can't really be called easy), and the weapons of that episode have some of the most unsatisfying/borderline stupid ones (ion blaster, shotcycler, and shockwave, anyone?) in the entire game. That being said, the game gains momentum in Episode 2, peaks in Episode 3, and comes to an ultimately satisfying conclusion, both story-and-gameplay-wise, in Episode 4. With the fan patch this is a solid 7/10 with interesting ideas and mechanics that, while ahead of their time, weren't innovative because they were so ahead of their time they break the game and make it at most a 3/10 without the fan patch.

as long as you use the community patch this is a perfectly fine little game of its time. level design gets better and better as the game goes on, as do the weapons, and the movement overall feels great, and the overall atmosphere of the game even threatens to be downright interesting in the 2nd and 3rd episodes/acts. pick it up at your big lots bargain bin

Lange angekündigt, dann zu spät erschienen. Als Daikatana herauskam, waren wir alle schon etwas von Half-Life, Unreal und der Jedi Knight-Reihe verwöhnt. Da kam Daikatana schon sehr altbacken daher. Wir sind hier auf der Suche nach einem legendären Schwert, das Zeitreisen ermöglicht, und schießen uns zunächst durch das zukünftige Japan. In erster Linie ärgern wir uns in der ersten Stunde mit Mücken, Fröschen, Krokodilen und unschuldigen Leuten, die einfach nur im Weg stehen, herum. Ansonsten ist die Grafik auf dem Stand von Mitte der 90er-Jahre. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad ist knackig, es gibt Ladezeiten mitten im Level und sonst macht dieses Spiel auch nichts Besonderes. Wer gerne alte Shooter spielt, kann einen Blick wagen, wenn er die anderen schon durch hat. Ansonsten verpasst man hier nichts.

Но мало кто знает о ДАЙКАТАНЕ... А игра не то, что интересная, а на то время революционная и намного увлекательная чем то, что выходило в то время. Созданная с использованием ID Tech 2, она выглядела намного лучше чем тот же Quake 2 и ему подобное. Инновационный подход к разделению всей игры на разные временные зоны и с оригинальным оружием которое используется только в своем времени. Прекрасная находка с временем где мы посетим роботизированное металлическое будущее, залитую солнцем древнюю Грецию, холодную до дрожи средневековую Норвегию и в финале унылую и серую современность. Четыре разных времени в которых свои уникальные враги и свои уникальные орудия умерщвления. Замечательная задумка и прекрасная реализация самой катаны. Играя ею как единственным орудием убийства, мы ее совершенствуем до почти оружия богов. Дайкатана играется легко, очень интересно следовать сюжету и заниматься поисками разных секретов которых тут не мало. Впечатляюще и порой необычно нарисованы миры сквозь которые мы будем путешествовать в погоне за главным злодеем. Крайне рекомендую игру к прохождению или минимум как в коллекцию для уважения такого человека, выдающегося геймдизайнера своего времени... Джона Ромеро.
A game worth playing if you're at all interested in the history of FPS games. I used the 1.3 patch with god mode and teleport for my companions, as well as unlimited quick-saves. This was not the way John Romero intended you to play Daikatana. However, I think these concessions allow the player to appreciate more of what Daikatana does well, rather than being caught up in all of the missteps and friction of the original game. That being said, if you can get past the rough edges that are present even with the 1.3 patch, this game has some really interesting ideas (for example, RPG character progression), a unique atmosphere, excellent character control, and a pretty wild arsenal. I'm sure this would be a blast to play at a LAN deathmatch party. John Romero did indeed make me his ♥♥♥♥♥.

vamos ser direto esse jogo e um desastre zerar isso foi uma dor no figado cada bug que tentava me parar e como se o jogo não quisesse ser aberto para deixar claro não usei o patch 1.3 para facilitar minha vida mas vamos separar as bolas
CONTROLES: e uma anomalia do nada seus controles ficam escorregadios e pior ainda se voce não estiver encima de uma superficie totalmente plana e bizarro imaginar como erraram nisso
DIFICULDADE: e progressiva so que ao contrario o primeiro mundo e um inferno mas depois o jogo fica facil muito facil a unica dificuldade e os companheiros mas fora isso e um fps que ao meu ver mesmo que tirassem boa parte dos defeitos não seria interessante não ajuda o fato que eu achei boa parte das armas tediosas
LEVEL DESIGN: não e horrivel porem não foi feito para muita das armas no incio a sua segunda arma e mais perigosa para voce mesmo a explosão e muito grande e estupido a arma suprema então e pior ainda a maioria te mata POR QUE TUDO TEM QUE EXPLODIR e explosões e fases apertadas não combinam
IA: todos os personagens do jogo são idiotas por completo os inimigos ficam presos na porta os seus companheiros ficam na frente de seus tiros e nem sabem subir uma escada e voce precisa deles vivos e no final do level o mais seguro e abandonar eles no começo de cada nivel e depois buscar eles graças a isso cada level tem o dobro de duração
HISTORIA: e ate interessante porem não vai alem disso as cutscenes são longas e ruins (pule a primeira cutscene e pro seu bem) travadas sem muita emoção e algumas nem da pra entender direito

Посредственный шутерок, неиграбельный без фанатских патчей, с тупыми напарниками, неприятной стрельбой и душными локациями. Даже старания моддеров неспособны исправить критические ошибки геймдизайна, хитсканящих врагов и неинтересный геймплей

So after finishing the game now with patch 1.3 I can easily say this is one of the greats.
Sure the game has its problem but every game has some quirks and such.
The game design and the level variety is, amazing!
Every new chapter has its own art style and setting and its own weapons and enemies. its just such a good variety.
Its setting is this. Mishima has created a sword called the Daikatana and started weilding its powers to travel thru time.
He creates a world and timeline where he is the ruler of the world.
Hiro our protagonist is set out to stop Mishimas plans and reset the world to what it once was.
To help him is Superfly and Mikiko.
Graphics are very nice even thou its made in the quake 2 engine which is a little outdated now with all rights since it came out mid nineties.
The sound design is good as well I only whished the music was mixed differently so it doesent get swallowed by the other sounds and noises in the game.
The controls are easy to use and there is commands you can give to your teammates.
Overall its a great game and I am soon the very proud owner of Romeros personal Daikatana copy which I bought from him on his store webpage.
It will be the most precious game I own and i will get a glass box to display it in.
Nothing but love for Daikatana.

I didn't expect it at all. I liked Daikatana quite a lot.
After the atrocious opening levels and a pretty mediocre first act I was pleasantly surprised. Starting from act 2 something clicked. Maybe it was the movement, maybe the level design, but the game became really fun. I really enjoyed bunny-hopping around the maps and finding secrets.
The 1.3 fan patch really fixes most of the problems with the game. I played with immortal companions, unlimited saves, and companion teleport enabled.
Total catastrophe
Already the story of "virus" / "vaccine cure" is unbearable. Even with the newest fan patch, graphics are ugly. Controls are forgettable, "sidekicks" are rather suicidal, environment is boring ...
Stay away.
Maybe the real daikatana was the buddies we couldn't leave without
real review, its not that great of a game even with the patch that fixes most of the issues. the guns aren't very interesting and are not that useful (you get a c4 launcher as a secondary, which is... probably the second most useful out of the weapons, the shotgun doesn't let you shoot only one shot, it forces you to shoot like 5 times in a row, the rocket launcher is pretty nice but not that useful, the fist is one of the worst melees i've seen in a game, and the starting pistol is the weapon you are gonna be using almost 100% of the time because it's just the most reliable.) the game itself is full of bugs like holes in the map and random softlocks, progressing can be... difficult if you don't try every possible solution, which can be very frustrating at times when the way forward is a small shootable switch hidden in the ceiling 2 rooms back. the AI teammates are famously bad, they will shoot you to death "on accident" and stand in your way and open doors that get you killed and steal your ammo, and the majority of the enemies feel just unfair, with near instant reaction speed hitscanners behind most corners and doors that do more damage than a literal missile hitting you directly, and very difficult to hit swarm enemies early on. Also pressing f10, the key right next to the load hotkey, just quits the game instantly. So be careful trying to load.
At it's best, its a decently good but still somewhat mediocre game. At it's worst you won't ever want to touch it again. I'd only recommend this on sale so that you don't have to spend that much money to see if it's your type. If you want something similar but better, closest thing that I can compare it to is Quake 2.

I giochi del grande "John Romero" non fanno mai schifo, a parte questo lo so che è uno dei FPS peggiori del mondo videoludico.
Fu anche uno degli errori del caro John, come lui stesso ammette che assumerli, (staff formato da modder appassionati ricchi di talento, ma poveri di esperienza) fu uno dei suoi errori più grandi.
Siccome amo sparatutto in prima persona e l'ho preso in offerta per 80 centesimi, ho riscontrato vari bug, come questi due personaggi che non mi seguivano o erano bloccati in ogni dannato livello, a volte il gioco chiudeva. Lo riaccendo e ripeto, finché non ho finito.
Meh, che puoi farci?
Pazienza, non mollare, rilassati e mettici un po' di impegno per giocare un altro po' e finisci, semplice.

Also one of John's mistakes. As he himself admits that hiring them (a staff of passionate modders with a lot of talent, but little experience) was one of his biggest mistakes.
Since, I love FPS and I got it on offer for 80 cents, I found various bugs, like these two characters that were not following ne or stucks in every level (damn), sometimes the game closed, I turn it back on and repeat, until I finish.
Meh, what can you do?
Patience, don't give up, relax on and put some effort to play a little more and finish, easy.
I liked the story, the protagonist "Hiro Miyamoto" and gameplay.

Very surprisingly, I'm enjoying this game. Just as an infamous part of gaming history it's a fun experience, but it's very playable on modern systems with the 1.3 fan patch installed. Dare I say it, it's just as good or better than the horde of retro boomer shooters being released today.

You start with an RPG-like weapon and the starting enemies are very small poison frogs and fast flies.
Will update review later but I don't get why people are negative about it. The game seems cool, like Quake, but it's miserably hard.

La verdad es que lo he intentado, el primer capitulo es un tanto duro pero siempre escuche que los demás eran mejores, y el segundo era Grecia, que me suele encantar, pero cada vez que intento avanzar el juego tiene algo que me desanima, ya sea el mapa, los enemigos, las armas... o el rendimiento a pesar de tener el parche 1.3, para un juego del 2000, bastante triste.
Pude llegar al capitulo de Grecia, pero no tiene mucho de interesante ni siquiera estéticamente, las armas, al igual que en el primer capitulo, parecen a veces inefectivas y la Daikatana aunque potente es un poco molesto que tras hacer el combo tenga un parón en los ataques, casi que preferiría poder hacer yo el combo manualmente.
En fin una pena la verdad, igual en un futuro me da el puntazo pero de momento el juego es bastante durillo de tragar.
Oh… The only and one Daikatana by the one and only John Romero whose b*tch I am apparently now… Yeah, I finally got my hands on that game… First and foremost, I, as most people, played on the fan-made 1.3 patch with unlimited saves and invincible sidekicks. I did want to try playing the release version just to understand how the original game with no improvements felt, however, it was so broken that I couldn’t even activate the console – and I have zero desire spending another 3 hours to get to the first sidekick for an hour of the original gameplay test. Nonetheless, even the 1.3 patch does not fix this game to being anywhere near good but let’s take one thing at a time…
[b]Story[/b]. Boring and cringe. I understand that Romero wanted to make an epic adventure about travelling between different ages, however, why couldn’t he hire a professional writer to make the story? The game greets you with a 10-minute-long intro cutscene where you are instantly given tons of names and events, you sit through it hoping that it was a necessary lore introduction and the story will get epic from there… but it doesn’t. All dialogues and cutscenes in the game are insanely boring and prolonged, some are additionally cringe, and I honestly do not understand how I restrained myself from not skipping them. Even the final twist barely provokes any emotions, except the one you already had for most part of the game “when will this finally be over?”
[b]Music and Sounds[/b]. Fine, I did not remember any single track from the game and some gun sounds were weird (huge thanks though that the patch developers removed that insane cracking sound during the loading screens!) but overall, these are the most minor problems of Daikatana.
And without further ado… [b]Gameplay[/b]. Oh, where should I even start… Sidekicks. The infamous sidekicks! It was advertised as one of the unique features of the game and became its biggest problem. The thing is, unlike modern games where your companions silently teleport behind you when falling back, manage their ammo and health themselves, and in a few games can even noticeably impact the battlefield, in Daikatana, they are primitive and dumb. They do not teleport, and you cannot leave a level without them, so if they got stuck somewhere behind, you have to backtrack and look for them. Even with the patch, I still got a dozen of moments where they got permanently stuck and I had to load the nearest save file (thanks that the game at least automatically saves after every map change). Their combat intelligence is no better: they cannot pick up weapons and ammo themselves and you have to manually give them commands (and you will likely just vacuum clean the area yourself just as in any other boomer shooter; why couldn’t the developers make it that you cannot pick up the weapons you already have?). They can also easily get stuck into an enemy in a corner or on stairs and do nothing while getting damaged. On top of that, while the patch makes them invincible, in the original release you also had to babysit them with their health and armor because their death was game over. So, you can imagine what a nightmare Daikatana was when it came out.
Guns. Every episode has its own set of 7 guns, however, except episode 4, in all other episode they are either just bad or have a specific quirk that makes them barely usable. Grenade Launcher – grenades get attached to the surface if you miss and have enormous blast radius, Shotgun – shoots in bursts of 6 when all enemies die in 2-3 hits, Venom Staff – if you miss the projectile bounces around and can poison you too, Hade’s Hammer (melee weapon but still) – has a powerful AOE attack that damages you too, Electric Staff – sends small wisps that deal minor damage, Necromancer’s Staff – summons a demon that barely attacks enemies and you cannot swap weapons for while etc, etc, etc. As for Daikatana – the weapon this game is named after – this is one of the most pathetic melee weapons I’ve ever seen in computer games! Sure, you can level it up by killing enemies with it, however, you get only get 1-2% of XP per kill, do not receive XP yourself, and can’t block enemy attacks. The sword attack hitbox is super broken and the only reliable way to kill with it is standing in place while getting damaged by enemies you are trying to bat with it.
Level design and enemies. The game starts in a cyberpunk future and you expect the first episode to be some cool Ghost In The Shell-ish city levels but instead you get… a pack of acid green sewer levels, later mixed with industrial zones… Same for the episode 4 but the acid green is replaced with pale grey there. Sure, the game does get more visually appealing in episodes 2 and 3 with Ancient Greece and Medieval Europe, however, the level quality remains the same… While there are maps with interesting layouts and ideas the overall level design quality just makes them into labyrinths with unobvious switches and pathways. The same situation is with the enemies: while there are different types of them, it feels like they were randomly placed on the maps without any intention of making a challenging or interesting combat scenarios.
It feels like all the assets and ideas were just put into some RNG machine which merged them together without any logic and spat out this piece of code. Also, as I’ve said before, even though 1.3 patch does significantly fix the game it does not make it any good. It simply turns it from an unplayable boring mess into a mostly playable boring mediocre product.
[b]Conclusion[/b]. You know, there are some games (like the original Nier for PS3 and Xbox360, for example) that received mixed or negative reviews on the release but have one or two good things which makes it worth getting back to them many years after – Daikatana is not one of these games. It does not any part of it that is above the mediocre level. I still can’t fathom how a person who worked on the levels of Doom and Quake could fail every single element in his own passion project, especially the level design! Is Daikatana a terrible game? On the release – probably; with 1.3 patch – no. However, it does not stand out in any way, and there is no single reason to play it nowadays, except as a relic of history. Yet still, instead you can just watch a video about its and Ion Storm’s history (which I highly recommend, it’s hilarious how they spent their money), and it will be easier and funnier than spending 12-15 hours on this piece of code. Nonetheless, if you are still planning to touch Daikatana yourself, play with 1.3 patch with cheats enabled in extra options, unless you are a total masochist who wants to suffer just for the sake of it!
[i]P.S. Do you actually want a game with an epic story about saving humanity and time-traveling between 4 different eras? Play Serious Sam: The First Encounter and The Second Encounter! Sure, it does not have 28 different weapons and enemies remain the same for each era, however, I do not think it is such a big problem when the game itself is actually fun and challenging![/i]

"I've played every Romero title before this, even on hard difficulties. Wolf3d, Doom, Quake, Quake2" ... "I've played that other EIDOS game or whatever, Deus Ex... but what the hell, I'll set it to the easiest difficulty and just get to know the game, beat it easily."
Kind of confused where to go, cant find my way out of the first room on level zero. It all looks like dark green mush. Literally cannot find my way out of a room. Set the brightness all the way up.

Stuck. And dying a lot. Check all the keyboard things, is there some function I'm missing? Try shooting things that might be buttons. Try bounching shots into the windows. Nothing.

Is this REALLY the worst game ever?
I don't know, I couldn't get it to work.
I bought it on sale for 75 cents. If had been a dollar I would have asked for a refund.

3 reason the first level leave a bad first impression.
1: The starting weapon is a bad weapon for this level. Aside from the ricochet shots that can hit you for massive damage, in a level filled with swamps firing it in the water hurts you.
2: While weak, the enemies blend into the enviroment and are hard to see. Only the moskitos have some good design to them as while they are small, you can hear them.
3: After a the mini boss, it wasn't clear where I was meant to go. And when I did get back on track I encountered an underwater tunnel that killed me if I didn't have enough health.
I know I made it further last time I played it since I got to Superfly and hated him as an AI partner but I just wanted to talk about why the first level was bad.

Arkadaşım bu ne kadar sikko bir oyundur lan Enis abiden izlemiştik zamanında o kadar kötü olamaz diye aldım lan kontroller bok gibi, aim alışı bir garip, vuruş hissi yok, hayır çıktığı döneme göre konuşsak o zaman göre de yok gidin Max Payne'e bakın neredeyse aynı dönemler ya da Half-Life'a bakın. Neyse lafı çok uzattık kısaca böyle boktan bir oyun yok John Romero'nun iki eliyle bir aleti doğrultamadığı bir oyun.
Daikatana - It's exactly what you think it is.
Man, I can't really begrudge not only buying one but three copies of this game because it really is like just an astounding piece of work. John Romero, after making Doom & Quake and then after three whole years of development he comes out with this ambitious piece of work and in the year 2000, Ion Storm releases perhaps one of the greatest games ever made. That game being Deus Ex.
Anyway, so this game is like, everyone knows it's bad but it's also just astounding because you walk into this right out of the gate and everything is like extremely ambitious and yet shockingly misplaced. The level design is impossible, they have small enemies who swarm you, clipping is such a problem that no-clip is literally bound to one of the keys and so on. But like this works on modern PCs and like you are never going to experience Daikatana any other way. I stared at this game and I was like "Wow, this game truly is a marvel." like some sort of evil curse was drawing me to it. 2 hours (like an hour of seriously playing, to be fair) and I can already tell that I'm in for something unique.
Shockingly bad game design but also a mosaic piece representing the worst impulses of the hubris of mankind. A man can conjoin together two kanji and all of a sudden he thinks he can speak Japanese. Runs on the Quake 2 engine as designed by other then members of id Software!
