beautiful hell
Hey this is fantastic strategy game! I know there are newer versions but this is already fantastic and after this one i can move to next. Great imagination and lots of strategies involved. Also kind of idle feeling because battles are automatic which also works nice. Brilliant masterpiece.

Es ist einfach viel zu viel Zufall mit im Spiel. Auch ist es ärgerlich das man seine Truppen für die Schlacht nicht selber aufstellen/ platzieren kann. Die KI ist auch nicht die cleverste, ob es die eigenen Einheiten oder der Gegner (ziehen auf der Weltkarte, ziehen im Kampf). Oft killen die eigenen Caster die halbe eigene Armee wenn man Pech hat. Schade eigentlich eine ordentliche Idee aber mäßig umgesetzt. Den Preis finde ich auch zu hoch. Sollte eher bei 10 Euro liegen.

It is also annoying that you cannot set up/ place your troops for the battle yourself. The AI is also not the cleverly whether it is your own units or the opponent (move armys on the world map, move units in combat). Often your own caster kill half the army when you are unlucky. Too bad actually a decent idea implemented moderately. I also find the price too high. Should be at 10 euros.
I love this game. It's got a lot of depth and content, and has a certain old-school-RPG feel that I love.
That being said, there are some easily fixable UI issues that drive me insane:

[*] Left click to move / Right click to select feels backwards and is the opposite of AoE/Civ/etc. There should at least be an option to swap these. I get that some Mac users only have a left click but most gamers have both.
[*] There's no autosave (this is probably my biggest gripe).
[*] If you go to manually save and accidentally hit quit (next to it), that's it: your game is gone and you're looking at the desktop (there should be a confirmation prompt if we haven't recently saved).
[*] Manual save doesn't pre-fill a suggested save name, and if you save without specifying one it silently fails
[*] The UI doesn't clearly indicate who the active commander is. You get used to looking in the top left corner to confirm who is active but it's still possible to make mistakes. Some sort of active unit halo/circle would be nice.
[*] There's no way to select an entire column when transferring units in the army. It's either select the entire type or one-at-a-time.
[*] The sans-serif title screen font feels lazy. Can we at least have Times New Roman?

Simple little game yet holds some complexities that make it engrossing. Be prepared to get mobbed because the AI doesn't mess around.

I really love this game. Asynchronous factions! Simple to learn. Hard to master. Also some great mods which add even more faction features and terraforming! I think my hour count says a lot.
Looks like an Excel spreadsheet, but a blast to play. One of my all-time favorite games. The fifth game is out, making this one obsolete, so if you are interested, just grab that one.
Some things you can do:
-Overwhelm the enemy with a massive army of seemingly harmless woodland creatures
-Summon GOD
-Turn enemies into trees
-Create a sun and scorch the map
-Summon OP monsters that will kill half your army with friendly fire because they just do not give a fook
Pros:
-Many different factions and units. (warlock, witch, and druid were my favorites I think)
-The factions have quite different play styles, including some interesting ones that will lead to self-destruction if you don't progress fast enough.
-Easily moddable, but you are limited with what you can change. I made some tweaks to my own files to balance factions to my preferences.
-Emergent gameplay resulting in some very interesting outcomes. I feel like every session could be turned into an epic novel.
-For however many hundreds or thousands of units you have, every single one has their own inventory, stats, spells, and characteristics. Some units can be upgraded or transformed, and most casters can acquire more skills.
Cons:
-The graphics, I guess, but I don't mind them.
-The UI could use some QOL upgrades.
-It's a roguelike, and sometimes the RNG will just screw you, especially in the beginning. The neutral units are more dangerous than the AI, but it's so hilarious getting annihilated by a moose early on that I can't even get mad.
-This game has a huge assortment of awesome OP summons for the end game, but depending on the faction, there is a chance that the summon will fail (wasting a ton of resources) or the summon will arrive hostile (wasting a ton of resources and also potentially wiping out a chunk of your army).
Neutral:
-AI isn't very smart, but I mostly play this game to chill, so I'm fine with that. In the harder difficulties, the AI just ends up with larger stacks, but it plays the same way.
-This is intended to be a fun, casual strategy game, so I don't think it is really an issue, but factions are not balanced against each other, and this is further compounded by the fact that factions rely on certain resources, and those resources may not be easily available in certain eras, so choosing an era that works for all players is something you have to keep in mind for multiplayer.
-Combat is automated. Mostly only an annoyance when weak flying units blaze past your front line only to be killed instantly.

Oh no! they've made a new one. My schedule is toast.
Terrible user-interface and default control scheme. It's not a good look when a game fails to offer user-experience on-par with a 480p DOS game from literally 20 years earlier (like HOMM).
Text is on the verge of being unreadable, even with the largest font size selected, probably due to poor choice in fore- and back-ground colors. Some panels don't fit the screen and offer no scrolling when the font is not the default one.
I do see that the next installment in the series has what seems to be a better user-interface so I'd try that at some later point. I hear good things about Illwinter's Dominion series too.
Definitely a refund and would say it's not worth your time even for free. Would 100% rather play Heroes of Might and Magic 3, especially with VCMI.
It is a fun turn-based single or multiplayer game. It reminds me of Age of Empires in a sense but more enjoyable, especially due to the multiplayer aspect.
The conquest of elysium series is by far the least fun set of games that I've played for cumulatively over 100 hours, and will likely continue to play. The game itself offers such a unique and interesting set of possibilities and strategies that it is always tantalizing to try a new set of starting conditions. Not only that but there are any number of unique encounters and enemy combinations which can keep the game fresh and exciting.
Unfortunately the game does everything in it's power to stop you from experiencing any of it. Between the extreme imbalance of classes, impenetrable resource barriers, terrain which constantly hinders your movement, and agonizingly long waiting times between turns there is rarely much of anything to actually do on a turn. Generally speaking your commanders will have three action points per turn, but the vast majority of tiles require two or more action to move through, leaving you with one or two clicks for each turn before ending and waiting on opponents. Then there is the winter season which makes all the tiles take even more points to traverse, meaning you might move on a turn then not even be able to act at all the next round. Speaking of seasons the winter will also half your economy from many money making tiles. That's a problem because the economy is another way the game halts your engagement. Most classes who don't rely on gold exclusively will languish for resources, and have trouble being able to even recruit units. In the event you can hire or summon your units they are often weak to the point of being laughable unless they are ludicrously expensive. Sometimes these units are also problematic to summon as well, you might fail to summon them and have your whole army killed by the unit you summoned after a three hour game. Or perhaps you will simply be punished by having your commander be unable to move for an indeterminate amount of turns. Either option is basically punishing the player for trying to engage in the mechanics of the game.
There are so many anecdotes I could list, constantly having groups of two snakes or a single deer take my resources, or having all my commanders only able to move one or less tiles per round due to weather and geography, or simply not being able to get any economy because every resource tile has massive NPC armies on it which lock me out of building an army.
The list could go on, but the main takeaway is that this game doesn't want you to play it. it has cool ideas and interesting classes with the foundation of a great game, but then the mechanics of it try at every turn to stop your fun. There are a lot of people who play the game who I see enjoying the "difficulty" but for me the strategy of the game is very simple to understand, and would be fun to play if not for the constant barrage of annoyances and inconveniences. Unfortunately there just isn't another game like it, and so I'll probably come back again and try to ignore the abuse the game puts me through to scrape what little fun from it that the game will let me have. From what I've heard conquest of elysium 5 doesn't address any of these issues either, so I'm not hopeful that there will be a solution. Do yourself a favor and just don't even play the game, don't get a taste of the poisoned fruit or you might get tricked into eating the whole thing like me.
Unique type of game in between strategy genres. This one improves upon CoE 3 and i hear 5 improves upon this, but they are all great games and i recommend them all (3, 4, 5) to anyone who likes fantasy games and/or games like Civ, Nethack or other similar turn-based strategy which have a randomly generated map & experience each time you start a new game/map.
I wish there was a neutral option.
The game itself is fun, might of magic type but there's some serious issues I have.
1. Price- I can't see the justification of this at full price. Only worth it if on sale of over 70%.
2. No option to load/return to main menu when in game. - results in having to close game down each time and re-opening in order to reload (save scumming is a thing)
I do think the game is fun for people into this genre but I would not recommend paying for it at full price.
Just get Dominions 5 if this game looks interesting. This game is nothing but whack-a-mole trying to keep your locations from being taken over by independent enemies. I'm always too busy just trying to keep my current locations from being overrun that I can hardly ever expand. Do not play this game, it is so close to being a good game that you will waste far too much time on it before giving up. Even a small band of wandering bandits can easily cost you units that it takes a town 10 turns to afford. Also, they couldn't even add a "load game" or "main menu" button, so if you want to exit out of a game you have to fully close the program. I have tried very, very hard to like this game, but there simply wasn't enough care put into it to make it anything but frustrating.
I bought this game after playing a lot of Dominions 4 and it was a blast. I only don't recommend you buy it because CoE 5 is better and in constant development.
10/10 would buy it anyway to support the devs

To be honest, i never played it much, but thats maybe because Dom 4 existed and - compared to dominions generic mechanics of pumping out (or catching...) troops and sending them around while the respective nations gimmicks mostly only get important with time - here every one has something weird unique right at the start so i had not found "my" faction.
The various factions play much different from one another. Many army leaders have special abilities. You can have as many human players(up to 15) that can team up together to eliminate an AI computer player. A well thought out stategy game.
So much fun and the lore is excellent! There is a bit of a learning curve but once you get over that and the 2D graphics, you will find yourself in one of the most immersive 4x games ever! Looking forward to adding more hours into this.

Actually a great game but the creators support openly racist youtubers like Arch (who's linked on the site for the newer COE). Sad!
Very steep learning curve, I had to look up player-made guides as there is no real tutorial to speak of nor are factions adequately explained, but the game is an absolute gem and I recommend it to anyone who can get past the graphics. Lots of content, anyone who enjoys games like Heroes of Might and Magic would love this.
TLDR
Do NOT buy at sticker, if you want it, on sale pay at most 5 or 10$ it is somewhat worth that.

This is not remotely worth the current asking price of 25$ (US).
However it might be an acceptable game for maybe 5 or 10$, if you can wait for a sale.
The series isn't terrible but, despite being on it's 5th iteration now, this game still lacks compared to classics like Master of Magic, Age of Wonders, Heroes of Might and Magic, many of which were made decades before and have been ported.
What's worse is, while it has so much potential, 4 never felt like it was completed before they basically barely upgraded it and called it 5 and began selling it as a new game.
I'm not sure I'm comfortable fully recommending -any- of their games with that business model. It's worse than companies that do the same with DLCs since at least the DLCs usually cost a fraction of a new game.
I hate doing this since at a time it had so much potential but... Thumbs Down, Not Recommended
Fun once you get into it
I'm playing CoE4 and having a hoot with it. I just keep finding new and unusual events, creatures and geography. All the games in the series create a rich narrative. Can't stop playing... and seeing in game events, units and places I haven't seen before. The hits keep on coming! Edit note - older review with about half the hours.
If you can't wrap your head around Dominions 4/5 like me (...me dumb-dumb),
then this (& it's successor CoE5) is the game for you.
Not even gonna get into the factions and unique strategies & gameplay of each.
Don't feel scared though. All the factions are balanced enough & the Illwinter Devs are on point & always keep on updates for years.

The kind of game you really want to like, but it doesn't let you.
In theory this is right down my alley. Fantasy 4X-lite with randomized maps and starts, and a large variety of spells and creatures.
The problem is it manages to be annoying in all the areas that matter to make a "lite" game playable:
- UI is clumsy and non-standard: weird "right-click to select and left click to move" convention; Transfer screen has the genius idea to put X symbols on unit icons [thankfully fixed in CoE5] making them unreadable; there are few actions to do every turn yet they managed to bury them in menus.
- Lack of tooltips for some map symbols, for instance what does a catapult mean in a location's attributes? You won't know unless you stumbled upon the [i]textual description of the icon[/i] in the manual. [CoE5 introduces a key to look up tile details]
- UI for viewing units in an army or transferring them is *especially* clumsy: hard to differentiate tiny sprites, no summary of how many units of each type a commander has (except in a global window you have to scroll through) [CoE5 shows unit counds in the Transfer screen], and the display when multiple armies are standing on the same tile is a mess. Positive side: it'll make you appreciate the interface in every other 4X.
- Slow start where you need multiple turns and solid expansion to even purchase your first unit or cast your first ritual.
- Ironically there's a large variety of units and spells, but you'll be mostly repeating the same two summoning rituals over and over and using the same units for the whole game. Makes you miss the excitement of a neutral sometimes joining your ranks or the capture of a unit dwelling in HOMM or King's Bounty,
- No control or influence whatsoever on fights, which are exceedingly random: some of your commanders insist on leading from the front and will die in most serious fights; worse, a single lucky shot can kill your main commander that you spent hours leveling and pretty much end your game. This means you'd LIKE to play fast and loose because this is a "lite" game, but you CAN'T and you have to tediously micromanage instead which leaders participate in a fight, with a UI that slows the process down.
- The combat system changed from CoE3. Among the changes is the introduction of a massive amount of friendly fire, with mages and dragon breaths often damaging more of your own units than the enemies. Where in CoE3 a dragon or powerful mage was just a flat out cool addition to your army that you could enjoy, in this edition (and CoE5) you'll most often than not curse helplessly as your mage Decays to death your recent cool summon, or your dragon fries a dozen of your men while chasing a single remaining Feared enemy. Mitigations exist but are incomplete and micromanagement-heavy.
- No end of battle summary. With battles involving hundreds of units with tiny samey sprites, it's easy to lose track and not realise you lost a key unit in the mess. [There's a command line option to enable battle reports, but you have to use it when starting a game. Afterwards, it's too late to enable it.]
- No way to visualize how far your army can move along a path this turn? No way to set a path for an army over multiple turns!? Come on, Heroes of Might and Magic 1 had this in 1995. This means shuffling armies around mid-late game is really a pain.
- The Civ-like "barbarians"/independents are ramped up to 11, in power but especially in number of stacks spawned. Initially you might like the challenge, only to realise it's nigh-impossible to hold all the little resource points on the map without having dedicated armies playing whack-a-mole with bandits, or tediously placing sufficient garrisons on all of them. Seriously, where's the "lite" aspect at this point? Every "deep" game I can think of has less micromanagement in this area. [CoE5 lets you "overrun" puny stacks without combat, making the fly-swatting a tiny bit less grating]
- Dictatorial design decision to let you have multiple save slots, but not load them without returning to the desktop and restarting the game. Combine with the unpredictable fights, and you have a recipe for disaster. Games can last hours despite the supposed "lite" aspect, and who wants to restart and do the tedious start all over because the game decided to screw you? [CoE5 at least lets you resign and get back to the Main Menu...]
There is a multiplayer component, but I don't see myself playing my typical "3 players allied vs the AI" romp I do in most 4X games, since the game is likely to screw over and maim one of the players by killing its best commander, ending the coop fun for everyone. Same problem as in single player, only three times as likely with three players.
There are some positive points buried under this unsufferable UI and game design: large battles are impressive, creatures of various sizes allow for some epic and frightening monsters, some boasting spells of apocalyptic power. The maps have some interesting things to discover such as the lair of the dwarves which if unchecked can seriously impact the map, portals to go through. But the pain you have to go through to experience this doesn't seem worth it.
Last topic: unit and faction descriptions are sometimes decent. At other times they try to be humorous but are rather on the dumb side and fall flat for me, with nonsensical and possibly self-referential stuff like bears liking potatoes and teaming with deer to attack towns.

I played much more CoE3 than I did CoE4, the save system was bad, the ui was bad, the bugs weren't so bad but I still couldn't do more than 20 hrs in CoE4. I doubt I'll buy CoE5, seems the dev just keeps adding a few more races and a little content instead of making any improvements to the game itself.
Pity, i did initially find the game "Beer & Pretzel Fun" ... but not enough to play it more than i did.

it is a deep strategy game... alot of things that you can do which is something i like in every game being able to do alot but NOT having to do everything to win.
there are alot of bad things however... like something basic like a back to menu button. in order to get back to the menu you need to close the game first.
it also isnt possible to continue on a world on which all the other players or AIs have died... which is something i would appreciate... just being able to conquer the world in every sense as well as every plain.
but then again, i havent really gotten into mods to see if i could get this experience thought that.
a big thing to mention is that you dont get to command your armies as much as you would like perhaps... you only get to command where they go on the map, however while in combat everything they do is AI based.
so if there is a particularly dangerous foe YOU would like dead first, then its up to to the AI and idk how the AI decides that
hope CoE 5 works some of these kinks out. If yes then i am buying that as well.
It's fun, and the various classes play very differently.
There are multiple planes of reality, and sometimes they invade.
If possible, try to avoid going to the Void plane unless you have a character that is immune to Insanity (cultist). There are very few ways to remove insanity in the game, and it's very challenging to get out of the Void before your characters go insane.
Along with Dwarf Fortess, Illwinter Games stand as the ultimate function-over-form brand of entertainment. So many mechanics and moving parts, so many different strategies and experiences to be had. While DF is the like Silmarillion and Dominions may be likened to The Lord of the Rings, this game is like The Hobbit: shorter and sweeter, less complex but still packed with flavor.
The graphics are simplistic (the game was programmed by one person using SDL, with the art and lore by another), but if you're the kind of person who appreciates this kind of grandeur of depth in a game then this probably won't bother you too much. Kind of like a TRPG with minimal visual aids, barebones but immersive enough to spark the imagination.
There's a lot of randomness but so much content that it makes it worth it. This isn't the kind of game where each playthrough is the same enemies in slightly different locations in functionally identical procedurally-generated rooms, after playing COE for hundreds of hours you may still be encountering new enemies and events that you haven't seen yet, and all of this with *NO DLC* (Looking at you, Paradox).
One of the least-conventional aspects of this game is the combat, once two armies clash, the computer takes control in an algorithmic autobattle format. The algorithm for the battles (along with all of the other mechanics) is actually listed in the manual, which I thought was very cool. The actual tactics used by the computer involve a lot of RNG, so the outcomes are hard to predict, simplifying the strategic element a bit but granting it a touch of cinematic tension (though sometimes frustrating; it has a strong roguelike flavor).
In short, this game is as much of a story generator as a game, and a very good one. It's about halfway between Civilization and Dungeons and Dragons in that respect. The games are not symmetrical and very rarely fair, but they are still a blast nonetheless! I'm looking forward to COE5 in August B)
Also, if you appreciate pure strategy over roguelike randomness, the other series by Illwinter, "Dominions," is unparallelled!!

基本は指揮官を操作し、野良ユニットと戦いながら土地を占領し、占領した土地から得たリソースを使ってユニットを雇用し、ユニットが溜まったら他の勢力を潰しに行く。Age of Wondersとかが近い。
勢力によって雇えるユニットもリソースの種類も経済の形式も全く異なるので、いろんな遊び方ができる。
■良い点
・大量のユニット同士のオートバトルを眺めていると楽しい。ほとんどのユニットは1x1だが、4x4とかの超巨大なやつもいたりしてロマンがある。
・勢力の数が異様に多い。フレーバーだけでなく経済の様式が全く異なるので、いろんな遊び方ができる。
・ユニットに超細かいスタッツとかが設定されていて、戦闘中の状態異常や負傷なども再現されていて、ファンタジー世界で軍を率いている解像度が高い。
■悪い点
・AIがアホ。メイン拠点を潰されるとゲームオーバーなのだが、拠点を空っぽにして占領されて勝手に滅亡したりする。なんもしてないのに敵が全部自滅して勝ったなんてことも。
・難易度設定はかなり雑で、AIの出力にゲタを履かせるだけ。最高難易度はおそらくプレイアブルでない。
・マップの種類によって相性が良すぎる文明とそうでない文明があり、そのへんのバランスが悪い。
・強い選択肢と弱い選択肢の格差が激しすぎる

This is truly a great game. Except it's old school and the graphics are very dated. 100% still worth it.
The depth of CoE4s lore and the complexity of its game play, paired with the replayability from the rogue-like procedural generation make this game extremely addictive for me. Looking forward to CoE5.
This game has a lot of good ideas and unique factions, and it's fun watching the battles.
However, I gave it a thumbs-down because of the atrocious UI. If for example I couldn't make mistakes and accidentally build in the wrong location, or I could see the number of every unit in a given city (particularly important for dwarves) then I would recommend it.
One other issue - there are magic items that literally kill your army, and if there's a way to get rid of the item other than giving it to a single guy and leaving him behind, I don't know what it is. It's pretty dumb.
Simple to play strategy with deep mechanics. Graphics are nothing special to look at but functional. Endgame content unlocks way after you won the game. Which is why this game spawned a mod to prevent it from ending when all enemies are eliminated. 11/10 would procrastinate finishing off the last enemy in order to explore hell and unleash the apocalypse upon the world again.
It's a fun 4X game. Easy to pick up, with enough fun and interesting mechanics to keep players invested for a while. I really love this game and look forward to playing Conquest of Elysium 5 when that releases.

A tactical-roguelike with quite a bit of depth, but i found it not very enjoyable.
A different game from the same creators, Dominions 4 or 5 is much better.
This negative review is another casualty of there not being a neutral option.
I love Dominions. I played 4 and 5. I picked this up on sale when they announced that CoE 5 was coming. This is not Dominions. That is obvious but still worth saying.
It lacks lots of little quality of life things that it should have. The only way to exit the game is to quit. Meaning that if you still want to play, just not this game because things have gone poorly or you don't like the way a race plays, you have to quit and restart the game. You can't exit to the initial menu and start a new game. For me this came up a lot.
When you buy troops, it will display all the locations you can buy them at and you can only buy at each location once per month. Fine, except it doesn't tell you where any of the locations are. You can buy at a guard tower but you can have a dozen guard towers. They don't get names. You can right click to center the screen on a purchase location (something it doesn't tell you but I kept fiddling) but the purchase screen is still over the map and covers 60% of the map. If you have locations close together you can't see where you are purchasing. In addition to this, purchasing defaults to your original base every time, no matter what commander is active. This can lead to you purchasing troops at the back of your empire instead of at the front where they are needed.
Commanders don't stack or follow. In Dominions you will have multiple commanders and casters in any army. While you don't need specific leadership in this game (any mob will follow any commander in any number) you often need multiple commanders for magic support. You have to move them all one at a time, with variable movement rates, sometimes leading to a caster with no troops going in alone because you didn't know the main army couldn't move this turn.
It plays much more randomly than Dominions. Just watching the player notifications between turns you will see 50% of the players (all bots in my case not live people) die in the first dozen rounds. This can be due to not guarding your base while you scrounge for resources in the early game or having your only commander (because you can't afford another for quite a while) die.
While the level of complexity is similar to Dominions the level of information provided to the player is not. Casting is expensive but there is no list of spells available to help you decide what to aim for. Are tier 3 worth it? Have to experiment and find out, except resources are always scarce. The bigger your empire the larger your front line. There is never a time when you are flush.
The worst part is, it's not a bad game. I still want to go back and try again, but it is really frustrating and could easily have been better with out significant change to content. This is all about implementation. I can only home that 5 learns some lessons from the disappointments of 4.

quite fun with insanely theoretical depth, just you aren't encouraged to go to other plans of existence making the entire game occur in Elysium missing a lot of the games depth.

One of my favorite games. In my short play time (90 hours) I've managed to lose dozens of times! I've also won a half dozen times. It's much simpler than Dominions and has a different less complex structure to it. Two different games despite appearances.

Conquest of Elysium 4 is a great game to play when you don't have internet or a mouse, perfect when you have a laptop and on a long train or plane ride. The game can be treated like an adventure, set on discovering new tiles and monsters with their own lore.
The game lacks a lot of elements that make it competitive, like being largely luck-based and having unbalanced classes, but there are ways to strategize and make efficient plays that can provide the player some advantage in multiplayer games or against AI.
Although small, the community has uploaded mods that can be added to make gameplay more enjoyable, balanced, and favorable to the player's desire.
Multiplayer games can last well over 2 hours if its a 1v1, and can last well over 4 hours if its a 2v2. Patience is definitely required to enjoy the game.
It's a nice idea but it is definitely not as fun as Dominions.
I hope that a lot of issues will resolved.
I've been playing CoE through versions 3 and 4, for probably 7ish years in total. I've always used it as a lightweight game I can play on work laptops on business trips with smaller maps. I usually start up a game of Dominions if i have a while to play. That said, I now realize that I have not given this game the credit it deserves. Recently, I have really dug into it and omg this game has some depth to it. I realize now that I had just scratched the surface of the game without exploring the planes. They were previously just a place I would end up by accident and hope like heck I could out of. Now, they are destination. So many awesome things in this game I have not been able to put it down for a week!
Lots of finicky little issues but overall a fun game. Best with humans as all their games.
A very fun game, most games that i reach 80+ hours in its because of idleing, but i think ive actually spent every minute playing and I could do it 2 times over without getting bored. If your thinking of getting it, get it! way better then Conquest 3.
This little gem of a game has grown to become one of my favorite games of all time. While it is EXTREMELY unforgiving at times, the game is meant to be played with the expectation of imminent death at the hands of a terrible monster at any moment. This game will make you feel like the King of the World and tear you down the following turn. So much fun both alone and with friends, make sure to experiment with the settings and era that best suits you or the kind of game you want to play. While this game is far from being super balanced, I do believe every class has more than enough to be very fun to play and powerful on at least one era. If you love fantasy role-playing, turn based strategy, and don't mind a brutal world, this game is definitely for you!
Perfect game and funny! Picture's is awesome! I only miss in game is: play with no AI or NO WIN OR LOSE CONDITION or explore mode to conq not only elysium but also other planes. Other thing's in game are good almost all perfect.

I enjoy this game very much. While it look simplistic it has much content and is very fun to play. Not as complicated as dominions but just as fun to play. Most classes play differently and that add to the gamplay greatly. Great game.
I've had this game and CoE3 in my library for many years, but I used to dismiss this as 'Dominions-lite' so why bother playing it if you already have Dominions, right? After seeing it popping up a couple of times I decided to give it another spin and this time it finally hooked me. It's a 4x game with an emphasis on exploration and discovery. It feels more like an roguelike RPG sometimes than a strategy game. All the factions/classes play differently, and the world is randomly generated. Don't read a guide (maybe just check how the UI works). Just pick something and go! You'll probably die a couple of times, because of the RNG gods, but that's the roguelike part of this game. All the units, all the factions, everything has very interesting descriptions that bring across the deep lore of the world, just like in Dominions, but you have to discover it all by yourself. It's not a game that throws the lore in your face, you have to dig for it. If you're not interested in that, the game plays really fast, especially compared to Dominions. Turns fly by, which makes a 'game over' because your last hero was trampled by a giant moose a bit less painful. There is a huge amount of dept to the game as you might expect from an Illwinter production and even the graphics, while they take some time getting used to, they have their own charm once you do, and make it very easy for modders to add new factions, just like Dominions.
Can't wait for Conquest of Elysium 5!
Classes feel very distinct, there is a huge variety in units, abilities and special interactions and the difficulty can be adjusted from very easy to incredibly hard. Games can be as short or as long as you want.
Some of my favourite moments so far include invading a swamp and defeating the troll king with my baron and his unicorn knight army and then converting the useless and movement-inhibiting land to good farmland, all while holding off bloodthirsty animals.
Another awesome moment being when I played as a demon summoner who can sacrifice humans for currency was when I performed a ritual to summon a demon lieutenant, to which I was rewarded with a massive and powerful winged devil who could shoot fireballs from the back of the army before charging into the frontline and destroying almost a dozen units with a single slash of his fiery sword.
Absolutely recommend.
Conquest of Elysium is a great little "4x" game with a decent amount of depth and plenty of replayability. There are many factions to choose from each with their own play style and a decent amount of items to find that greatly help whoever you equip it on in your army as you play.
There is a certain depth to the game but don't come in expecting a deep game. The depth is there but it's nothing huge like the game's bigger brother series: Dominions. If you don't have the time to dedicate to a grand campaign in something like Hearts of Iron or build a masterpiece train network in something like Factorio then this is a good game to pick up. If you can only play an hour a night you can finish a game or two within a week.
This is a really good game for doing nothing. I use it while watching lectures or studying.

Discovered I could venture to hell. Sent a demon lieutenant to try and subjugate some lost souls. Turns out the demonic mining supervisors weren't keen on me stealing their workforce. Watched my demon commander get his ass kicked, rage quit, and realized I hadn't saved in 20 turns. 10/10
Conquest of Elysium is a fantasy turn-based strategy game. You can become one of a multitude of players, from a Baron to Witch, Warlock or Necromancer to name just a few. You can be multiple factions and make them on the same team to fight your enemies.
The graphics are very good and the abilities of the various factions are sometimes amazing. You can play against seven other players and you can include AI players also. This is my first Steam game and I enjoy the game and love the platform. Try Elysium, there are many different types and many different time periods. I am looking forward to the next revision of Conquest of Elysium.

A cluncky, ugly, and at times inscrutable game to play. Yet it is still a compelling and surprisingly experience at a reasonable price. The perfect lunch-break strategy game and a game you will play for years.

I really tried to like this game. But unfortunately, it is just a mess.
First of all, the game does not come with any sort of manual, and does not have any in-game descriptions. (Just plain laziness on the part of the Dev/s)
The game also lacks any sort of actual menu's. There are no buttons. All you can do is move, 1 unit at a time.
Combat is boring. It's basically you watching your units and the enemies units move towards each other and fight automatically. (If your units are melee and you are fighting ranged, say good bye to those units.)
Absolutely no strategy in this game.

A game I always come back to, the RNG can be ruthless sometimes but also makes it challenging. The different races also make you develop different strategies and makes it overall more enjoyable. The lore for all characters is usually deep and sometimes humorous.
Voice of El is so garbage. Why the ♥♥♥♥ do CRUSADES not have blessed units??? Why is there absolutely no scaling for crusades or inquisitions? Why are all my units dumpster tier? Why isn't smite global? What a joke
A lot of Dominion fan-boys will probably piss on this review. Yet, it is the honest opinion of a strategy and RPG fan. The game feels like a non-optimized poorly executed student project that has ripped off all assets of the Dominions series, and despite all this, the game is enjoyable.
There is so much wrong with this game, the balance, the RPG progression elements, the AI, and the user friendliness of the game.
Balance:
• Barbarian start with large army of weak troops. Perfect for fighting small animals like dear and can take on some bears. Massacred by larger creatures. Hero, which is needed to move the army on the world map is equally weak and stands in the front row. The strategy of barbarians resolves around gathering enough money to afford a spirit guide and play similar to any other spell casting hero in summon beings to do the fighting.
• Trolls on the other hand, start with a massive troll hero, who can take on any low-, to mid-level creatures on its own. No army is needed, till you encounter larger creatures. In which case your troll hero reduces to a weak front row unit like the barbarian hero.
• Starting location can differ tremendously, so every game is unbalanced between players from the very start.
RPG:
• Progression is divided into four levels of experience. The bonuses of each level are fixed and very limited. While a +1 hitpoint is good for a low level unit, it is absolutely negligible for units with over 100 hitpoint at level 1. Also, a low level unit will probably not reach much farther than one or two levels before being hit in the face by a stray arrow.
• Also, progression of caster units depends on the amount of resources you have. A starting witch may need a hundred turns to gain some experience levels, but a new apprentice witch starting when you bank is full of mushrooms can easily turn into a hag (highest caster level of the witch class) and summon several ancient hydra’s and other old ones in a few turns.
AI:
• Roaming monsters do not stick to their habitat, nor behave like animals. Crab are found in mountain ranges instead of attacking coastal villages as its description suggests, dears wander off to desert areas where they do not suffer from thirst and giant sea dragons don’t seem to make up their mind to either raid your stronghold or go back to the deep sea where their lair is
• AI players can be wiped out on the first turn due to unbalancing starting locations and stupid decision making of the AI (like leaving their camp when a few boars stand next to their stronghold)
User friendly:
• The lack of polish is noticed in every interface: When you start a game and have a very bad start you have to quit and restart the game, to find that all settings (like world, number of players, etc.) have been reset. You cannot rebind keys, cannot set multi-turn routes, it is often not clear why you are allowed to enter a 3-move forest with only a single action point available and not move at all during the next turn, selecting spell of your hero requires you to enter the army roster and click on your hero after you have found him,
I would expect that in the fourth iteration of the game a lot of these problems would have been addressed. Fortunately, most issues are not game breaking in the single player experience. The unbalanced aspects can actually be used to set the difficulty of the game (however, there is no clear and logical ordering of the difficulties each class represent). The AI problems of other AI players can also be somewhat overcome by playing multiple factions yourself. This also disables the problem that you accidently finish the game by eliminating the last group of AI units, and thus allows you to explore other planes.

Played a Demonologist who can summon his troops from the depths of hell. Had some early success, and decided I was ready for a mass summons, and they decided they didn't want to work for me (demons being fickle like that.) They killed my army and my lord and I end up losing.
Decided to run a Demonologist again swearing to take my revenge. This time I was careful and eventually summoned a great army, and eventually summoned all 7 of their greater demons. I then took over their entire dimension. That will teach them!
Kann man auch nach Jahren immer mal wieder reaktivieren und Spaß daran haben. Klare und direkte Strategie. Erfreuliche Vielfalt an Einheiten, Zaubern usw. Auch schön, wie man Gier und Vorsicht ausbalancieren muss, um nicht grandios zu scheitern. Würde mir CoE 5 wünschen. Klare Empfehlung von mir.
You cannot zoom in on the battle map. It's hard to recognize units unless I glue my eyes to the screen. Unacceptable.
I want to like it, sometimes I play singleplayer and sometimes I trick a few friends into playing with me. Every time I go in thinking its going to be fun, but within 30 minutes we all remember why we stopped playing this game.
