It's been a few years since I've played Coin Crypt, but also for years I have had the game sitting in my "The Best" folder in my library. This puts it amongst games like Balatro, Factorio, Darkest Dungeon, Monster Train and Slay the Spire in my view. I consider this game to be a true hidden gem of a roguelike deckbuilder; the nuance involved with crafting your build is unmatched, the avenues for finding breaking setups are numerous and enjoyable, and I struggle to think of a game that has managed to have a massive character roster but keep each of their traits (and therefore the runs with them) meaningful and distinct from one another. This is my much-belated but also much-deserved review of Coin Crypt :)
Simple and fun rouge-like before the market was over saturated with them. This game doesn't really let you make a BUILD per se, but there definitely some fun strats using an completely consumable ammo system (VERY UNIQUE).
For $10, crazy repeatability and fun. Def not a grind your nose for hours kind of game but when you got 1 an hour or 2 to kill it is perfect.

Interesting mechanics for the deckbuilding and consumable nature of each action, but I failed to learn the game well enough to be able to interact with much of the game before dying each run. It's not that I needed a tutorial to understand the game, but there are several obstacles in the game that I would need to sink many more hours of experimentation and failure into to learn how to overcome, and that task of decoding the secrets of unknown statues and how to avoid getting your entire run nuked because one standard enemy gave you a self-replicating curse coin that destroys your entire run is too daunting for a game like this. A bit more stability early in a run for a game like this would keep it from becoming tedious, I can only imagine how RNG-dependent it gets later into a run...
Honestly, a roguelike that will probably give me thousands of hours of playtime if I truly get the urge to complete it. It is challenging, more so than your usual roguelike, and the combination of your cards being your health and your currency makes every upgrade and item purchase such an interesting pros and cons consideration. It took me around ten hours just to beat it once on the main character, and there are so many more characters to try still. It's worth the price if you see it on sale.
A unique concept executed extremely well
A deckbuilding game where you can't build a deck because your cards are removed from the deck after being played. Genius.
Maybe there's something more to this game, but I find it too confusing and poorly designed to give it another chance or read kilometer-long guides just to get into it.
A dungeon roguelike where you explore and amass coins to attack and defend. Alot of cool and interesting mechanics but didnt resonate with me personally

Alongside the original Binding of Issac and the first Mount and Blade, Coin Crypt carried me through garbage computers, melancholic times and many long nights. The fact that I could run the trifecta above on an old windows XP laptop meant I could game on a toaster that lagged with Word.
Nevertheless, this is a great game with tons of replayability, many classes that force you (in a good way) to experiment with your build and an addictive formula for gameplay; easy to learn, hard to master. You have to be quick on your feet to know when to attack, defend or heal – and as the game progresses, the coins build a complex ecosystem within those three basic functions.
The first achievements I got are from 2015, and soon my relationship with Coin Crypt will reach a decade. I still come back to this gem to see if I can get farther than before, and I always do. As I’m reaching the end of the achievements, a part of me feels sad that I must move on to greener pastures soon – but know this, Coin Crypt will always hold a special place in my heart.

I've owned the game for years, but only recently decided to give it a try. It's okayish, nothing exceptional or awesome for my taste, just an average roguelike deckbuilder. The game might have been more fun ten years ago when it first came out, but if you are a fan of the genre, you might enjoy it more than I did.

If anything, it has an original take on the roguelike deckbuilding formula. The mechanics involved are pretty unique and will confuse many players, but I thought it was fun to figure them out anyway. After 30 hours, I'm fairly sure I managed to understand most if not all the game has to offer, without having to use any hints or guides.
There isn't much actual depth in this one, just straightforward runs with a bunch of different characters. No permanent upgrades, but there are unlockables -- but you can easily win runs without relying on any on them. Balancing doesn't seem to have been a huge priority: some builds are overwhelmingly better than others, which is especially apparent in the perks you can receive from ghosts. Some of the achievements are pretty grindy. If you got to the credits screen once, doing it again felt pointless to me.
In short, it's not the best roguelite out there, but at least it has some creative mechanics.

Got this game way back when it first came out. Its one of the grandfathers of indie rouge likes on steam, and you can tell. The game is rough around the edges in a good way where you can tell its a product of its time. The game is good when playing on pc, but when you play on the steam deck it's almost next level. At the core of the game is simple yet complex combat, with real time battles that make you have to make tough calls quickly which can make or break a run. Your attacks are also your deck, witch is also a form of health, which is also money, and status. This makes everything tie into each other in a way that I have not seem any other game really do. Also you have some run perma upgrades, and a an actual health bar that you also need to take into consideration. Also there are gods that you must either pay off to get special coins that last a run or they will get made at you and give enemies buffs. to top it off every level has a time limit where if you take too long you start losing coins.
it's fast paced crazy fun and with 26 different characters it's highly repayable.

i enjoyed this when i played it in 2015. i was surprised when other later deckbuilder roguelikes came out b/c my response was always "oh you mean like coin crypt?" this game was one of the first for sure. not too overly-complicated like later ones in the genre, but this was a good thing for me b/c i don't want to memorize spreadsheets to be good at a single player game.
The game is good, but this game can be easier than taking a dump or harder than diamond.
Its a good game with a unique concept and the character selection is also great, tho i would love knowing what each character pros and cons are before buying it

Coin Crypt is interesting because it is just a very unusual game. There isn't anything else like it and I find it fascinating that something so unique exists. It’s a game that I find myself coming back to now and then for that alone. I have no problem recommending it.

I love this game! I'm not usually a big fan of deck-building games, but something about the combination of style, tight controls, and tough choices make this one a huge exception.
I forget where I actually got this game. Might have been from some Humble Bundle. I reinstalled it recently and was shocked at just how much fun I was having with this quaint little dungeon crawler.
You play as a Lootmancer, someone who can turn money into power...literally. Your weapons of choice in this adventure are coins! Coins of all shapes and sizes, your wallet is also your armory. You will explore the island in search of chests of more coins, battling other Lootmancers, making deals, pleasing gods and more.
Battles work on a sort of action time system. Every turn you fish out a handful of coins and pick the one you want to play in response to an opponent. Different coins have different effects and speeds and the opponent is also throwing their literal two cents at you. Be careful with what coins you use though and try not to drag out a fight more then you need to, because every coin you throw is also money your throwing away. If you wanna make sure to make your money back you need to defeat your opponents in a timely manner so you can collect everything they DIDNT throw at you.
This makes for an interesting resource management mechanic where your coins are your life blood, your cash and your weapons. In order to buy items from shops, bribe gods and help NPCs you have to spend your precious coins to do so because these coins ARE still money afterall. In that way the game forces you to make a lot of interesting choices.
You can spend the cash you collect after a run to unlock new characters with their own twists on the formula. Like the Thief who cant take a punch well but rakes in coins like no ones business, Or the Hero who keeps all the coins she throws but her loot drops are next to nothing.
Over all this is a charming little game and if you got a few bucks to throw around I would seriously give it a look.

It says I played 11 hours, 10 of that had to have been on the main menu..
Be warned, the game is absurdly loud when you start it. There is a settings menu; to access it, you have to move to the podium, then select the wrench tab. Escape does not bring up a menu, or seemingly do anything at all. The interface was designed for controllers. There is a dedicated fullscreen toggle key (F), but no back button whatsoever, you have to click the onscreen back buttons.
Once I finally got into the game, I was disappointed to discover the enemy takes actions over time, it's not turn-based. Maybe it's a good game if you like that sort of thing, but it's not for me.
A PvE roguelike deckbuilder made before slay the spire was made. Wow. Also it's fun and simple, definitely worth the price if you're even just curious.
More skill than luck needed here, though luck has some influence. But, though I get that it was intended to keep the game moving quickly, the lack of a pause function in various parts of the game kinda detracts from the enjoyment of it. But that issue isn't insurmountable, so yeah, 9/10, would recommend.

An interesting deck-building game in which your cards are also your currency. This game is a fun enough experience with a solid art style and a fair amount of evident replayability, but I'm not sure it competes well with other deck builders, though it is cheaper than most. If you can pick it up on sale or really like deck-builders, it's worth grabbing.

Throw coin get paid
A fun, unconventional take on the deck-building rogue-lite genre, substituting cards with coins. As cliche as it sounds, it's one of those "easy to learn, hard to master" games. While each individual component has minimal depth on its own (deceivingly simple coin/character/item abilities), the combination of all of the game's elements introduces a cohesive plane for strategy. You will die, and you will die a lot. But the fun is figuring out an optimal combination of characters, coins and items to choose during a run.
The battle system is reflexive (both you and the enemy make decisions simultaneously), which is hard to get the hang of at first. With enough familiarity, though, you will be able to react fast enough that it no longer is an issue. Part of the high skill ceiling of the game is due in part to that.
And if you like rogue-lites with unlockables, then you are in luck, because the game is chock full of them.
A deckbuilder with - wait, where is everyone going?
Yeah, the market for deckbuilders is flooded right now, but this one from before the boom does things very differently (and well) and it's unfortunate that it's so overlooked.
Such a fun game with a diverse set of characters! I love to experiment and switch between each lootmancer, and it's entertaining to see which strategies take me far. Fairly easy to dive into and play as a beginner. Would recommend it to other people if they're looking for simple but fun roguelikes.

I was hoping for a slay the spire but with coins, and dungeon crawling -- not what it is.
A fantastic, unique roguelike. Even at over 170 hrs playtime and I still have yet to discover every coin, which I consider a good thing! There is a learning curve, but once you can start to recognize what coins do at a glance the gameplay really shines. One of my favorites, I keep coming back to it even 5 years after initially purchasing it.
It's so weird to re-visit this 7 years old game after the boom of the rogue-like deck-building genre because it feels like a twist on these games.
Basically, instead of a deck of cards, you have a bag of coins. You draw a handful of coins, split them into piles of duplicates and choose which pile you thrown at your opponent. Put the rest back into the back and start over. Except, the coins your throw are lost and then replaced with coins you loot and buy. And the game isn't turn-based, you have to play as fast as possible. And some coins have ongoing effects while in your bag so you don't want to draw and throw them. And some coins are more or less likely to be drawn. And there is no currency, coins have a value and if you want to buy something, you have to give coins with enough total value.
For me, this game is a huge mental challenge to play. I have trouble learning the game because everything is constantly changing.
It's a good game but I recommend it mostly because it's a truly unique game, especially for deck-builder fans.

Coin Crypt is a challenging and wonderfully fast-paced deckbuilding roguelike. The game is in dire need of a tutorial - my first two sessions consisted of confusion and little else, until I looked up a community guide in the Steam forums - but once one understands the basics, the depth of the mechanics is frankly incredible.
In the classic deckbuilding game Dominion, you gradually build a bigger deck of cards, play those cards, and then eventually shuffle them back into your deck. In other words, your deck is never exhausted. Coin Crypt's genius is that all its coins (i.e. cards) can only be used once. Combat against monsters ends once either party has no more coins, or no more health. In other words, both your coin pouches (decks) constitute a second resource that must be managed separately from your health, if you want to survive. Conversely, there aren't just coins that heal you or hurt the opponent; there are also ones that that make the opponent drop coins; ones that steal their coins and put them into your pouch; ones that give you status effects (e.g. +100% damage for a few turns); ones that do something and then give you other coins; etc. Since combat is a mixture of real-time and turn-based, coins also have cast times, so more powerful coins take longer to cast.
As if that wasn't enough, there are also items, and gods to which you can donate coins in exchange for future favors (for instance, donating to the god of greed makes coins based on stealing and dropping coins more likely to appear in chests); so you might not actually want to *use* the coins with the highest monetary values, since you can donate them instead. All these factors combined make for frantic fights in which you must make split-second decisions re: which coins to use to defeat (or survive) your enemies as efficiently as possible. Defeated enemies drop all their unused coins, but maybe it's more efficient to just outlast this one with a minimal expenditure of coins? Oops, you thought too long about it. You've died. Time for another run.
Even successful runs take only ~30 minutes - a *great* timeframe for a roguelike, and much better than, say, FTL's >60-90 min. And as if all the above wasn't enough variety already, there are ~20 unlockable classes - from the basic Assassin (+30% damage, -30% healing) to utterly weird ones (Ghost: gains much more loot, but constantly drops coins; Shroud: gets more loot from enemies and absorbs coins they use to attack it, but gets no chests whatsoever). One's class, blessings, items, coins, and gods all contribute to one's overall build, and since there are so many ways to defeat (or lose to) enemies, there's a pretty remarkable number of viable builds. And all that is based on the brilliant decision to make coins a separate resource that can be easily depleted. *This* is how to make a great, original combat system.
I loved this game so much that I played it to 100% completion, including the expansion, which only improved my opinion of the game further.
This is a remarkable, lovely, fantastic experience.

This is a nifty little one-handed roguelite coin-battler. Perfect for coffee breaks, and just addictive enough to keep you coming back. I unlocked all the characters in about 13 hours; there are more in the DLC if you want. Cannot recommend the Demon character enough; it allows you to buy sufficient buffs at the stores without sacrificing any of your best coins. A very pleasant aesthetic and great music as well.
A highly addictive rogue-like card battler game (with coins instead of cards) where you can feel invincible one battle and lose everything in the next. Imagine a card battle game where once you use a card it's gone forever, but you gain new ones at the end of each battle and can find them in chests or hidden ares in each overworld. Add a large amount of characters with a wide variety of different playstyles like only being able to take down enemies through status effects or by slowly stealing all your enemies cards (coins) each turn or having incredibly powerful attacks but contantly losing other attacks you had in you deck every turn. That's this game. Despite how many times i lose everything i just keep jumping back in for more, plus this is a game you can play one handed if u wanted to get sum multi tasking done.
Coin Crypt. A single player dungeon-crawler card game, except....it's with coins instead of cards. Multiple classes to choose from, lots of coins to discover. One the most fun ones I have played and completed so far. The most grindy achievement is none other than the very last one "The Obsessor". Just pick the Princess to farm gold, donate ~1500 gold to the deity you want coins from, and you will gather them all after a few dozens of playthroughs.

Frustrating at times, but also engrossingly addictive. Strategies expand as you unlock more coins and classes, with one of my favorites (demon) easily unlocked by collecting 10 brambles.

Coin Crypt is a Deck Building rougelike. Your goal as the player is to beat baddies, collect coins, and ascend the mountain of the gods.
Coins are both your main currency and what you use in a battle. Each coin has a different affect. Some are used for attacking and others are used to heal you.
You also unlock new characters to play that will change your play style. Some characters steal coins from enemies. Others have high cast speed, high movement speed, and negative defense.
There are even statues to each god that you can donate too. These deity's all have different affects to the enemies, chest, and shops you find. Depending on if you donate to them or not can cause them to like you or hate you.
From the amount of time I have played this game, 10 hours, the game is great. I enjoy playing the game and seeing how far I can go. I honestly would suggest playing this game. Bought on a whim and have enjoyed it ever since.
The laid back gameplay makes this game a great time to kill a few minutes. The art style I personally enjoy due to it's simplicity and contrast to other games.
Best game to play if you are depress
As a person who typically dislikes rogue-likes and their gameplay loop, Coin Crypt was able to tap into something that hooked me. This is mainly attributed to the coins, deck-building system, and varied characters. My friend first showed me this game years ago, and we ended up playing all night until the sun came up. The secrets hidden throughout the world are amazing and working with a friend to figure out mysteries was a fun experience.
The controls for gamepad are flawless. The battle system is very fun with an Xbox controller. I haven't purchased the DLC yet, but I have read some great things and I will get on that soon!
I emailed the devs to see if they were working on porting it to consoles or mobile, but unfortunately they have moved on to other projects. I think Coin Crypt would be great for mobile and I would play it so much more.
It's my favorite dungeon crawler. It's easy to learn and follow and has a cute art style. Upbeat and faced paced gameplay. A neverending stream of unlockables. Love it
This game is a social comentary on how we Americans spend our currency. All thoughs we hate capitalism and hate the big man with suit, we spend our hard erned dollar on corportations that also have big suit. I AM NOT POLITICAL> But i like this game becuase it trie to be kiddy and funny but I know what developer really trying to say/ I respect movie and film that can pull my heart string like that, REALLY GOOD
To say I'm late is an understatement, but that just goes to show how timeless this game really is. Simple but fun for hours on end. 10/10

Late game balancing issues be damned, this is a fine little roguelite for people who are good with voxel graphics and bad with money.
the runs are interesting fun and its a great time waster if your okay with simple concepts

Coin Crypt is a deceptively simple game with a vast array of options and a somewhat obtuse combat system. It's fun, frantic, and features some pretty charming artwork. Definitely a bit of fun for a few hours.
This game is perfect for anybody looking for bite-sized entertainment that you can also enjoy for hours at a time. The game plays at a rapid pace with just enough room for strategy that it feels really satisfying to do well. Lots of interesting characters to unlock and try, I found myself making progress and feeling like I'd gotten somewhere even when I could only play for 15 minutes.

Coin Crypt is a solid-enough game, with a unique concept and take on the genres it plays with. But, for no particular reason I can put my finger on, it just didn't really "click" for me. That's not helped by the complete and utter lack of any sort of intro, tutorial, or other form of onboarding when you first start up the game. There definitely seems to be a decent amount there to dig into, but you're going to have to generate the interest to dig on your own; Coin Crypt doesn't really do much to pull you in, opting instead to take a "check this out if you want to" approach.
Had this game for a while (humble bundle maybe??). Finally gave it a go. It's quite enjoyable and I do suggest giving it a try. Glad I put a bit into it and will be playing it more soon.
